All redesigned dragons from Spyro: A Hero's Tail

Some background for project: So, since the release of ‘The reignited Trilogy’ in 2018, I’ve always wanted to do a mini project revising the designs of all the dragons depicted in 2004’s ‘Spyro: A Hero’s Tail’. I’ve taken the 4 elders, the nanny, the villain and the 2 kid dragons from the game and tried to match each one with one of the 5 different dragon factions present in the first Spyro game.

"Why'd you fight Flame, kid?" I decided to draw my own vision of Spyro's childhood. Even adding Mrs. Shoutfire from "Spyro: Hero's tail".

By the way, I've got an idea.

I had an idea over the story of the purple dragon after watching the Super Mario movie.

"Spyro, along with Ember, went without adult permission into a forest unknown to them and there they found an abandoned portal. While inquisitively exploring, the portal suddenly started up and the dragoness Cynder came crashing down on Spyro. This startled them both and she ran away. After a successful search with the adult dragons, she told them that she was from another universe and was trying to defeat a dark force similar to Spyro, but suddenly she moved there for no reason, but before that the Dark Spyro disappeared. The dragons get to the point that he got here too, but the question is where he might be.

Meanwhile, it turns out it was Gnasty Gnork who decided to summon the Dark Spyro to replace him with the real Spyro and he would do all sorts of nasty things according to Gnork's plan. But the dragons don't know that. While he and the evil copy are making a plan to replace him, Spyro tries to befriend Cynder and show her beautiful places, but she hated him because of how much he looks like him. Spyro tries to socialize with her no matter what, but for the first time in his life, started to have loving feelings for her. "

Watching a speedrun for spyro a hero’s tail & it brings me some mixed feelings these days.

This was the first spyro game I ever played, it would be a while before I’d get to own a spyro game for myself but this was the first one to give me a taste of it. I thought it was the coolest game I ever played & as a teen when I actually got to own it & play it all the way through I loved it. I still kinda do, I adore the art direction in this game, you can rly see the love poured into it by the creative team.

However, it’s a game from the 2000’s era & it rly wears its biases on its sleeve. It tries a bit too hard to be cool so everyone has this “I don’t care” attitude so every character seemingly doesn’t like each other, it feels rly fucking awkward interacting with any of them.

It also has a pretty bad racism problem throughout most of the game. Like pretty much every level has one First Nations person stereotype & most of the time these are enemy mobs.

It’s also very weird about women, like Ember is rly weirdly obsessed with Spyro which he is uncomfortable with, like it rly wasn’t enough to just have a cute little girl dragon without making her pine hard for the boy dragon protagonist. Ms. Shoutfire is inept at stopping egg thieves & is denigrated to a maternal role, which would normally be fine, but this is the FIRST & ONLY adult lady dragon in the entire series. There are other adult dragons in this game, they’re the elders who teach spyro new moves, but none of them are ladies, only Ms.Shoutfire. There’s also the mermaid girl in Atlantis who’s played off as being ditzy where spyro kind of just sighs & says “chicks” as a weird statement about women in general?? It’s just yea, weird about women.

That said I still love this game, it’s very cute, I just kinda wish it leaned a bit more into being cute instead of the weird social commentary about women & the racist stereotypes (tho spyro kinda always had that problem)

Along with wanting Cynder, Malefor, Flavius/Flame, Ember, and the Dragon Elders, I’d want the following characters to make a comeback in some shape or form in other Reignited merchandise

The Hermit: Retconned into a Lynx

Chopper: Depicted as a heroic Dinosaur

Shoutfire: Retconned to Ember’s mom, Terrador’s wife, and the Elder Dragon of Wind.

Fryno: Retconned into a Rhynoc who was given a magic spell to resist dragon fire by the Sorceress (Before she died of course), but ended up deserting her cause to become a hero.

Flashwing: Retconned as a Magic Crafter.

Finished my design for Ember's clothes. Subtlety is not in her vocabulary, but FABULOUS is. The fur collar is detachable so switch it out and add it to other outfits as needed.

Fun fact about adult!Ember in the Cymber Rivalry and other AUs where she appears as an adult: she has facial hair/a beard like her mother and other Shoutfire relatives. I decided in the Cymber Rivalry AU she would cut it short/shave it off so the enemy had one less place to grab, but as a civilian, she wears it in a magnificent heart-shaped braid.

I still have not figured out how to draw that magnificent heart-shaped braid. 💔
