According to letters and previously unpublished manuscripts, J.R.R. Tolkien began writing stories about Middle-earth as far back as 1917 when he was deployed in the First World War. During this time of time of senseless destruction and tragedy, Tolkien created a hero that embodied these fears; Turin Turambar, the self-proclaimed “Master of Doom.”  There is no shortage of heroes in Middle-earth; the diverse cast of characters is a primary reason readers are attracted to Tolkien’s books. From the highest order of Elves and Gods to the smallest Hobbit in the Shire, anyone can be a hero. Manwe, Gandalf, Beren and Luthien, Eowyn, Frodo, Sam, and so on. These heroes of Middle-earth are generally positive figures, they show compassion for others, take council in wisdom, and put the needs of the helpless ahead of themselves; standard qualities for an archetypal fantasy protagonist by today’s standards.  Turin is different. He is disturbed, melancholic, and vainglorious, though he is capable of compassion and accomplishes much in the name of good; of Turin’s many exploits, the most remarkable is single-handedly slaying Glaurung the dragon, a scene reminiscent of Sigurd and Fafnir from the “Volsunga Saga.” Despite all of Turin’s achievements though, despair follows. His sister Lalaith dies from plague as a child and Turin never recovers emotionally; Turin’s father Hurin is captured in battle, believed to be dead, tortured for decades, and cursed to watch his family suffer from afar through dark magic; Turin’s homeland is overtaken by bandits and subjected to thralldom; Turin is forced to abandon his pregnant mother at the age of nine and the two never meet again; he is exiled from his foster home after murdering an advisor to the king, refusing to return on the one condition that he ask for forgiveness; he kills his best friend Beleg after mistaking him for an orc in the dark; most disturbing of all, he discovers that his pregnant wife, is actually his long lost sister Nienor. Upon realizing their act of incest, Nienor casts herself into the ocean and Turin falls upon his sword, thus ending his miserable life.  Turin, a complicated anti-hero that isn’t quite sympathetic, but pitiable, is a jarring departure from the other heroes of Middle-earth. There is never a triumph for Turin; the weight of the world just keeps packing on. While Tolkien was certainly in the headspace to create such a character during the turmoil of World War One, the genesis of Turin and his family is derived from “The Kalevala,” a collection of ancient songs, poems, and folk stories from Finland. Turin’s life was inspired by the rune songs of Kullervo, a deeply troubled youth who experiences many hardships and goes through life inflicting disaster upon himself and his people; sometimes by accident, other times in a fit of rage. Kullervo is a national icon in Finland, not just for his appearance in “The Kalevala,” but as the subject for Finnish composer Jean Sibelius’ first major symphony, “Kullervo. Op. 7.” Through this creation, Sibelius raised the international awareness of this tragic character, as well as the literary and cultural merit of “The Kalevala.”   Read more

The actual meaning of Runes
Tumblr media
When dealing with runes, their name should be analyzed first. The alphabet is called “Futhark” based on the beginning letter of the first six runes’ names.
“Runes” aren’t a singularity. There’s the Elder Futhark and the Younger Futhark, also called Futhork. Than there’s also regional varieties such as the Nordic runes, Frisian runes, Anglo-Saxon runes and varieties due to changes through time. Something that looks like a rune but isn’t is called a “tectiform”.
Etymological there are plenty of Germanic varieties of the word. Rún is Old Norse/Nordic, Old Saxon rūna, Middle Dutch’s rune or ruin and rúna in Gothic. In Finnish runo means “poem”.
The word “rune” in essence means “secret” but is also a word used for “confidential conversation/writing”, “concealment” but also “counseling”.
The meaning of the word was held literally. It was not meant for basic administration, conversation or education. Few people actually knew how to read or write runes. It was reserved for a select but also elite part of society.
This brings us to Odin. The tales tell how he hung himself from the branches of Yggdrasil for nine days to gain the knowledge of runic wisdom. This makes him the god of the hanged (Hangagud), god of runes (Rúnatyr), father of magical songs (Fadir Galdrs) and wise one (Svidur). Knowing runes was viewed as knowing (some of) Odin’s magic and/or power.
Runes were used for “runic magic” a not very specified kind of magic in the Eddic texts. Individual runes were given names, such as the first rune, Fehu which means cattle or wealth. Naming individual characters is a common historic practice. These are not to be taken literally, but often are in modern esotericism and fantasy. Germanic Runic spells however are a weird thing. There are mystical inscriptions on the back of brooches, stones, wooden artifacts, etc. We know what they say, but not what they mean.
Mostly runes aren’t actually that far fetched. They are found on grave/memorial stones or a craftsman’s signature on an object. An example of this is the Nolby stone; “Bergsven and Sigfust and Fride raised this stone in memory of Bure, their father. Fartägn carved this stone”.

Nature and Music
I find the concept of nature and music very interesting. From what I understand, pretty much every culture developed its own form of music before we had the technology for worldwide communication. For example, folk singing is a part of Finnish culture; ancient Kalevala rune singing is 2000 to 3000 years old, and animal bone flutes made by Cro-Magnons and Neanderthals have been found in France and Slovenia that may be as old as 53,000 years (Gray et al., 2001; Sahi, 2011). The widespread development of music in different cultures makes me interested in the origins of music itself. As discussed in the readings this week, music can be found throughout nature. Examples of this include whale songs, which even have a similar structure to human music, and birdsongs, which closely follow the human music scale (Gray et al., 2001). Birds and whales are only two instances of music in nature. I would also consider more abstract sounds or mixtures of sound in nature to be music. The wind rustling trees in a forest or the sound of rushing water in a stream play the role of instruments in a natural song, topped off with a bird singing or cicadas chirping. If we pay enough attention, any collection of sounds in nature can form a song. Sometimes, these sounds are even mixed into commercially produced music.
If I listen closely to the song Fishin’ in the Dark by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, I think I can hear what sounds like bullfrog noises. This could be an instrument that I am unfamiliar with, but the sound helps set the scene of a pond or a lake at night. I have found that many song lyrics include aspects of nature, using it to tell a story. For example, the song Dirt by Florida Georgia Line uses the imagery of red dirt to tell a story of growing up and falling in love.
As someone that listens to a lot of country music, I know that so many of the songs I listen to talk about nature or different aspects of nature, but when I try and write about it, I struggle to think of specific lyrics. Some songs I think of make me feel like the artist is singing about nature, but yet when I look up the song lyrics, they do not actually explicitly describe much about nature. I find this fascinating as I think it is because while nature is not specifically being described in detail, vague references and the production used to create the vibes of a song make me feel like the song takes place in or revolves around nature. An example of this is Carolina by Eric Church. When I listen to this song, I feel like the artist is singing about nature, but in reality, the lyrics are not very focused on the specifics. Are there any songs that you can think of that specifically describe nature in detail?

Iro Haarla Electric Ensemble - What Will We Leave Behind - Images from Planet Earth - instrumental prog rock/jazz from Finland (Svart Records); RIYL Rune Grammofon
Known for her large number of works in the field of acoustic free jazz, Iro Haarla is a notable Finnish pianist, composer, arranger and band leader. Now, having inked a deal with Finnish cult label Svart Records, Haarla takes an eye-opening sidestep towards progressive rock. Her new band consisting of renowned Finnish musicians, Iro Haarla Electric Ensemble weaves a vastly colourful world of sound around Haarla’s peculiar melodies, and welcomes us to new sonic territory: a vibrant world where black music influenced rhythms, acoustic instruments, analog synthesizers and spacelike, valiant electric guitars converge. In her long career as one of the most distinctive creative powers in modern scandinavian jazz, Haarla’s history includes both the works with her past life partner Edward Vesala (d. 1999) and an extensive repertoire of her own innovative solo works, recorded for the renowned ECM Records.
For What Will We Leave Behind - Images from Planet Earth Haarla has put together a band whose musical expression is strong and profound. The rhythm of the music lies in the dynamic hands of bass player Ulf Krokfors and drummer Aniida Vesala, and together with Sami Sippola’s (Hot Heroes) responsive tenor saxophone and Finnish rock legend Jukka Orma’s (Sielun Veljet) imaginative ability to dive into new dimensions with his electric guitar, What Will We Leave Behind grows into an unforgettable experience for both prog rock and jazz enthusiasts.
Out on the 29th of October 2021, the Iro Haarla Electric Ensemble debut is a homage to nature - our common planet and home. Inspired by nature, the album is also a cry for help in the age of natural disasters and depletion of natural resources around us.
“I admire nature’s grand beauty, which arises from extreme phenomena and the battle for survival. The thread of life is unbroken”, Haarla says.
Each album track portrays a place on Earth: between the humane opening track The Song We Loaned From Our Children and the hopeful closing track What Will We Leave Behind? vibrates a variety of soundscapes from lakesides, oceans, glaciers and rainforests, all the way to the winds and rumbles of mountains and man-made cities. Adding even more depth to the musical themes and landscapes, the album’s cover art was picked up from environmental art pioneer Teuri Haarla’s photo collection.

The races of Men, Elves, Dwarves, Hobbits, Orcs, Valar, and Ents all have a unique set of customs, but their transmission of lore, history, and magic are unified under sharing songs. People sing when paying respect to the dead, recalling historical events, conjuring magic for battle, and partaking in merriment; the very creation of the universe, referred to as the “Ainulindale” (Music of the Ainur), tells how heavenly bodies sang everything into existence. Put simply, music is a participatory way to engage with the world.  These specific functions of music raises questions over the inspiration behind the song cultures in Middle-earth. Examining the established books pertaining to Middle-earth reveals a variety of influences such as Norse mythology and Anglo-Saxon story-telling tradition, cultures discussed in previous posts. Of all the cultures that were weaved into Tolkien’s stories however, the region that arguably had the greatest influence on the musical aspects of Middle-earth was Eastern Finland. For hundreds of years, the Finns that resided in the republic of Karelia recited stories that were passed down only through song. People taught lessons, shared history, invoked magic powers, and celebrated life with these musical stories. Not only are these acts depicted in the cultures of Middle-earth, a number of Finnish folk stories inspired major sections of the legendarium. Read more

Questions for the Blogger!
I’ve been tagged by @darlingvagary for this; thanks so much!
Rules: answer 30 questions and tag 20  blogs you would like to get to know better.
1. Nicknames: Most people call me by my real name, but my parents call me Lu or Louie (comes from Peter in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe calling Lucy ‘Poor old Lu,’ and they’d call me that when I cried as a baby.)
2. Gender: Female
3. Star sign: Erm... Leo I think? I don’t really do star signs, so I’m not sure about this.
4. Height: Actually I’m not really sure? Somewhere between 5′6′’ and 5′10′’ so let’s go with 5′8′’, I suppose.
5. Time: 2:06 EST
6. Birthday: Aug. 19
7. Favourite bands: Midnight Oil, Wild Ones, Icon for Hire, My Bloody Valentine, The Choir, Backsliders, Sal Paradise (the Australian Christian one, not the Minneapolis one).
8. Favourite solo artists: Aaron Sprinkle, Steve Taylor, Sufjan Stevens.
9. Song stuck in my head:”Flower of the Plateau,” a vocaloid song sung by Miku and written by mothy.
10. Last movie I watched: Half of ”City of God” for school, and I don’t think that I can watch the rest... it’s full of every kind of thing that I’m sensitive to. I guess that I’ll have to finish it in order to pass the class, though... *sigh*
11. Last show I watched: I’m not sure... it might have been Voltron? It’s not my favourite, but the whole family watches it together, and I can’t really skip out on it when everyone else is watching.
12. When did I create my blog: I’m not actually sure; I think that it was at the end of 2015? I didn’t really use it much until the middle of 2016, though.
13. What do I post/reblog: Mostly FMA stuff right now; lots of Kimblee and Envy stuff because I’m obsessed. My own fanfiction, and occasional horrible art. I’ll also post Astro Boy, OHSHC, Ace Attorney, TWEWY and some other stuff on occasion.
14. Last thing I googled: My time zone (I’m a loser who doesn’t even know that without the internet telling me).
15. Do I have any other blogs: Nope! I’m thinking about making a sideblog at some point, but nothing currently.
16. Do I get asks: Not usually; I don’t know too many people so I don’t get them often. (If anyone ever wants to ask me about my Kimblee headcanons about almost anything, though, then please by all means ask me, because I almost always want to talk about him!).
17. Why I chose my url: When I was 13, I spent the summer programming the Commodore 64, the computer that set my dad on the career path to becoming a programmer. I came to really appreciate the computer and these days I try to share how cool it and its sixty-four kilobytes of RAM really are whenever I can. It’s been my screen name on other sites before, so I was glad to see that some guy my dad’s age hadn’t taken the url yet!
18. Following: 143
19. Followers: 45
20. Average hours of sleep: probably 6 per night? I need more though... I’m dead almost every school day. XD
21. Lucky number: I don’t have one, but 64 is a special number to me.
22. Instruments: Piano/keyboards, voice, drums, and I can struggle along with a ukulele or guitar.
23. What am I wearing: A black dress and leggings and a jean jacket.
24. Dream job: Video game music composer! Or a video game music analyst. The very best job would be making my own video game on my own, but I’d need to get better at art and programming to do that. I’d also like to be a mum someday, but I’ll just have to settle for babysitting other people’s kids right now...
25. Dream trip: I’ve always wanted to visit Shibuya ever since playing The World Ends With You. I’d also like to visit Australia and see some of the places that Midnight Oil sang about, and maybe visit the Netherlands or Ukraine and try to find some distant relatives of mine.
26. Favourite food: Um... really unhealthy stuff. Basically anything that a picky eight-year-old would eat, I will also eat, and everything else, I will not. I do have a few more “grown-up” foods that I like, but I mostly prefer the stuff that you’d find on a kids’ menu.
27. Nationality: Canadian, but my family all came over from Europe within the last few generations, so I have quite a bit of Ukrainian, Dutch, Norwegian and Finnish influence in my life thanks to my great-grandparents and grandparents.
28. Favourite song right now: Tricky... let’s say “Crazy Comets,” written by Rob Hubbard for the C-64. I have a ton of songs that I’m listening to right now, though, so it’s hard to choose.
29. Last book read: I think that it was “The Black Cauldron,” part of the Chronicles of Prydain series written by Lloyd Alexander.
30. Fictional Universe You’d want to join (top three): I think that I’d like to live in the Rune Factory universe, maybe. Other than that, I’m not sure... maybe just one of my own made-up universes.
I guess that I really do have to tag somebody... okay, here goes:
@distant-glory @shocotate @xmissmichix @just-a-strange-gal
Just do it if you want to, guys :)
Thanks for reading through my wall of text, guys!
