[image description: 8 photos of a letterpress broadside printed from handset type and a linoleum block illustration. the poem is titled The Secrets of Magic, written by a young poet for the 2023 edition of Words of Courage. it describes the magic powers of a world with mermaids, dragons, wizards, and magical animals, and a game the creatures play. The text is set in Goudy Oldstyle in a justified block in the center, with a red drop-cap and red fleurons to mark the line breaks. the linoleum block is a wide border illustrating a magical flying dog on the left, a witch or wizard in flowing dress on the right, parts of a fishy tail and dragon claws and crashing waves across the bottom, and the light rays of the magic staff and the dog's halo of power intersecting across the top. full text under the cut. end description.]
🎉🎉 weekend activities: delivering my part of the edition for this year's Words of Courage publication :)) 🎉🎉
WoC is a yearly publication of poetry broadsides written by patients at Seattle Children's Hospital, and designed, printed, and handbound into portfolios by local letterpress & book artists. this year's whole edition will be scanned and posted there in a couple weeks & previous years are always there to see!
i've been trying not to overthink it when we do the poetry assignment step—if i have a single design Thought the first time i read a poem, it goes on my list to fight for. i read this one and thought yes 1930s illustrated fairy tales, y e a h hefty border and one (1) spot color, y e h Beardsley's Le Morte D'Arthur, John Austen's Hamlet—a dream assignment :)) just wanted to make their story as cool and dramatic as it could be—an excerpt of a larger work, part of an Artifact.
i have meandered off historical accuracy firstly by uh using linoleum instead of wood and the line quality is markedly different for it and, also, i warmed it up from a classic black key plate BUT at least one person did look at it and immediately say sure sure turn of the century book illustration i get you, so i will judge it a success. very fun to carve. i left the spellcaster's clothes for last because i knew i would enjoy that the most. title in Devinne, body set in Goudy; both of those cases are pretty worn but that's not necessarily bad in this instance and also i needed a pretty full case to get the body done in one go!!
I will call it a misjudgement to have done the text as a red underprinter/brown overprinter as i did—unlocking and re-locking the forme without the cap & fleurons went fine, but there are instances of mis-alignment in the type between the two passes that from sheet to sheet don't look to me like a registration issue. They're not consistent with torque of the sheet, they shift around the forme a bit; i have a suspicion that i shouldn't have done this with a letter-spaced forme, which is pretty spongy with brasses and coppers and may have made small expansions and returns as the run went on. hubris comes for all, lesson learned, etc.
full poem text: "We all have regular animals. — But in the deepest, deepest part of the world — there are magical animals —like talking animals, unicorns, and dragons. — All animals have a good owner. — Regular people have regular animals. — But magical animals have wizards, and witches, and mermaids. — I talk to animals, but I don't understand them. — I would like to have a talking dog that has magic (like Louis). — All magical animals have their own magic: — like moving things around with telekinesis, — and mind reading, — turning objects into different objects, — forming into an object or person (very powerful) — flying, — or turning invisible. — One of my pet dogs will have talking ability, — because she likes to talk a lot and bark. — And another one will have teleporting ability; — she likes to sneak up on people. — And another dog I know — will have mind reading. — Together we'll make a game out of all our powers. — We'll hide around 30 objects. — And the dogs will use their powers to find the things, — and whoever has the most objects at the end — will get a prize of a big bowl of sandwich meat, — but because they're magical they'll get colorful meat!"

im going to become a pest in your inbox now that you’ve invited me into your home by accepting my kiss request. anyways can you share world trade center facts with me please i want to hear about them so so bad
You sent this way back in April so I’m not sure if you’ll see it, but I’m finally answering on skyscraper day! 🎉
I’m limiting it to three things I want to share since I could probably go on forever lol
1. Minoru Yamasaki
Mr. Yamasaki is the architect that designed the WTC complex. He was Japanese-American and was born in Seattle. The twin towers were the most intricate and biggest structures he ever designed; before the Port Authority of NY + NJ proposed the project to him, he’d never designed a skyscraper before.
Tumblr media
[ ID: A black and white photo of architect Minoru Yamasaki from 1959. He is a Japanese man with short hair combed back to the side. He is wearing a suit and tie. Yamasaki is looking at the camera with a smile. There is a small note in the upper right corner of the photo with, “Minoru Yamasaki, 37” written on it. End ID ]
Two of his other notable works in the US are/were Pruitt-Igoe (urban housing projects in St. Louis) and the Pacific Science Center (in Seattle).
He was given rather good acclaim in his early days but the WTC was a project that turned off a lot of dedicated fans and critics. Their criticisms usually had to do with the WTC losing a sense of humanism his other work offered or claiming that his usual aesthetic and design motifs didn’t work on something so large.
The WTC received a lot of criticism even beyond architectural circles for a good few reasons but Yamasaki really wanted his most ambitious project to be successful. He actually made a several-page long response to an article criticising the towers written by a long time fan, trying to convince her that the project wasn’t what she thought it was and giving his perspective.
He passed in 1986 so he definitely didn’t see what became of it all. But I often wonder how he felt about the gradual change in attitude towards the towers specifically in NYC as time went on. Some people held negative feelings towards the towers even after they collapsed, though.
2. Window Washers
Minoru Yamasaki was a pretty short guy, and he had a pretty big fear of heights. So when it came to designing two towers with 90+ floors each, he made the windows in a way that he thought would make everyone inside comfortable. They were tall and thin, measuring a bit higher than the average person. Each floor was about an acre in size, and that led to there being 43,600 windows between the towers on all sides.
So they came up with a mechanical window washer that could clean every window in 20 days. People would still have to go out on the sides of the towers hundreds of feet in the air for maintenance, but most of the process was automated. I’d imagine it was something considered pretty inventive in the 60s/70s. I wish I had photos of it.
3. Tower Differences
The towers were not the same height! WTC 1 (North tower) was 1368 ft tall, while WTC 2 (South tower) was 1362 ft. However, it wasn’t very noticeable since it’s only a few feet in difference and they both had 110 floors anyway. The reason for the difference was WTC 1 contained an office floor for the Port Authority that had higher ceilings.
WTC 1 also had a ~360 ft tall antenna on the roof. It was primarily for broadcasting; upon being built, the WTC inherited the Empire State Building’s power over all the TV channels in the city. To put the height into perspective, you could fit the Flatiron Building (285 ft) on top of the roof and then some.
Tumblr media
[ ID: A picture of the roof of the North tower of the World Trade Center. There is a large mast in the middle, sticking straight up into the sky. The antenna/mast is sectioned into various smaller parts of black and white. There are also much smaller antennas scattered around the roof, looking like twigs compared to the central mast. The landscape is covered in a thick, pinkish fog, but the Statue of Liberty can be seen silhouetted in the background. End ID ]
Tumblr media
[ ID: A bird’s eye view photo of the Flatiron Building in Manhattan, New York City. It is a wedge-shaped building with a roof and foundation shaped like a scalene triangle. It is surrounded by two streets, both of which you can see cars and people moving about. They look small in comparison to the old skyscraper. End ID ]
Lastly, WTC 1 had a critically acclaimed restaurant on the top floors known as Windows on the World. It ran from 1976 up until the very end. Look up pictures of the interior, there’s so many nice ones that I can’t choose. Very pretty.
WTC 2 had an observation floor and deck! The floor contained small restaurants (one I can name off the top of my head is Sbarro), stores, and a mini theatre with a motion platform ride inside (the short film it went along with can be found fully remastered here!)
There was gonna be more to this post but I ran out of juice so hopefully this piques interest as it is. I am always open to questions about the WTC, it’s been a main special interest and important part of my life since 2019 and I always love sharing what I know. It bothers me that so many people see the towers and only see their destruction, not the life that came before it.
Now, a book recommendation. I highly recommend Sandfuture by Justin Beal. It’s part biography about Yamasaki, part autobiography about the author. But there’s a lot of information about the towers and how they came to be, including an interesting parallel/critique of modern skyscrapers in NYC. I’d love to know if anyone reads it :-)
Anyway, happy skyscraper day. Thank you for the opportunity to ramble a little ✌️
Tumblr media
[ ID: A photograph of two businessmen in black suits conversing on one of the towers’ lobby floors. They are inside by a railing; large, shiny steel beams that split off into fork-like tridents high above them line the windows on the outside. They are very small in comparison to the tridents. End ID ]

Hello my sweet Mel, I hope you're doing good!! For the ask game: 🎉, 🌎, and 🎬?
Hello to you too Tonee! I'm good, thanks for asking love <3
🎉 - Holiday
Already answered this in Flood's ask, but the trip to Paris I took last year! I spent some time growing up there when I was younger, so it was nice to see how things have changed.
+ If I could take a fav holiday anywhere, it would be Greece. I'd sell my soul to go see Delphi and the remains of Knossos Palace (even though I burn and get heatstroke ridiculously easy)
🌎 - Place
The crook of someone's neck. Seattle. I've got a long running joke with my friends about it. Other than that, probably my childhood home up in the North of France. I haven't been in a long time, and the memory is starting to fade, but it definitely takes the ranks of my favourite place.
🎬 - Film
The 1925 version of The Phantom Of The Opera with Lon Chaney! Started off my obsession with silent films as well!

Happy National Boyfriend Day to all of my current favorite hockey boys🎉💜. Every year, I highlight my favorite band members (I used to post about this on insta but I stopped and ya girl has never had a boyfriend) on this day and since I’m a full time hockey clown, I’m going to highlight hockey players. (I know my chances of actually dating a hockey boy is extremely unlikely but it’s fun to talk about them). In no particular order, here’s a current list of hockey boys running around rent free in my head and this is subject to change at any moment:
-Tyson Jost (curly haired cutie who drinks respects women juice, is pro-BLM and is a Cup winner in my heart. I hope he succeeds in Minnesota)
Tumblr media
-Cale Makar (Conn Smyth and Norris winning, Cup champion, fellow Scorpio, humble icon)
Tumblr media
-Mikko Rantanen (my sweet Finnish Cup champion prince, fellow Scorpio)
Tumblr media
-JT Compher (a ginger cutie who moved in during the Avs Cup run)
Tumblr media
-Andre Burakovsky (2x time Cup winner, will be missed while he starts a new chapter in Seattle, will forever look cute with puppies and babies)
Tumblr media
-Tyler Seguin (this cutie is the reason why I love hockey so much)
Tumblr media
-Brock Boeser (Mr. Sensitive, Prince Charming. he’s been through a lot in life but still shows humbleness and I admire him so much for that)
Tumblr media
-Elias Pettersson (fellow November Scorpio, long lost Sedin brother, streetwear king)
Tumblr media
-Quinn Hughes (he moved back in after leaving for a while. I think napping together would be a vibe)
-Jason Dickinson (anti-racism cutie)
-Andrei Svechnikov (emotional support Russian)
-Teuvo Teräväinen (another Finn that I’ve become attached to)
-Sebastian Aho (another Finn that I’ve gravitated towards)
-Martin Necas (sugar boo) (if you know, you know)
-Brady Skjei (best known for an iconic SNL skit, fellow Harry Styles and Taylor Swift fan, sliver haired cutie)
-Nico Hischier (Swiss prince)
-Ryan Graves (I know it’s overused but vampire giraffe that reads anti-racism books)
-Joel Farabee (buzz buzz king who helps carry the Flyers on his back)
-Travis Konecny (radiates raccoon energy, has pretty eyes and is a married father)
-Roman Josi (I know he’s married and has children but he’s very attractive. My Swiss king, who has verbally supported the growth of women’s hockey and BLM)
-Phil Myers (I hope this giraffe will succeed in Tampa, my emotional support bottom pairing defenseman)
-Anthony Beauvillier (bark bark cutie with eyes that are so blue, you could drown in them)
-Mathieu Joseph (2 time Stanley Cup winner who’s Black, I wish him the best in Ottawa)
-Colton Parayko (gentle giant with a college degree and looks great in glasses)
-Jakob Chychrun (drinks anti-racism juice and his house is so nice)
-Pierre-Luc Dubois (a cute fridge who’s also a dog dad and is anti-trump)
-Jacob Markstrom (I know he’s going to be a father soon but this is my emotional support goalie and I miss him in Vancouver)
-Mitch Marner (I neglect him because of one of his teammates but he is a Directioner and dog dad so I’m here for him)
-Nolan Patrick (indie music king)
-Gritty (PURE CHAOS THAT I L*VE)

Do you celebrate Lunar New Year 🎉? Tonight, I zipped over to Kau Kau 🥢, the best Chinese BBQ joint in Seattle’s Chinatown. It’s a family favorite that @rikiyamada4 & I enjoyed last year when he was in Seattle. While waiting for my takeout order 🥡, I remembered that the restaurant might have a copy of the final print issue of NW Asian Weekly 📰. The free paper, founded by Assunta Ng, has been a source of information to the Asian community for 41 years. It’s going to be completely online next month. Hey yall long time no see. I've been busy losing 3 jobs, going through a breakup, being homeless, finding a place to move and moving in, and going on a trip to Seattle.
In the airport, waiting to board the plane and eating Chilli fries, I got a call from the scheduler from the hospital. I was expecting a date sometime in November since the wait times are long and arduous. Anyways,
17 days until my top surgery 🎊🎉🎊🎉🎊🎉

WEEK 9
Tumblr media
Good evening everyone, and welcome to week 9 of the third annual NFL pick 'em pool 🤵🤵🤵 Where over THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS 😤 💲💰 are at stake. It has been a rollercoaster of emotions so far, and we have finally reached the HALFWAY point 🌗 I cannot WAIT to see the back half of the season, which I'm sure will pair perfectly with the first like peanut butter and jelly, like milk and Oreos, like a shot of tequila and another shot of tequila, like Christmas and Mariah Carey
LISA - 12 POINTS
She's not giving up ladies and gentlemen 👀👀👀 as she absolutely bullseyes 🎯 another week. Missing ONLY the Buffalo game means Lisa has reclaimed a share of the lead. She better enjoy it, because this is the only way I'm communicating with her now. Lisa outdrove me at our golf game last weekend. She's 13.6 pounds. Can barely open a jar of pickles. Outdrove me. Three times 😐 Actually, I thinks this is more of a statement about how our fearless commissioner has the golfing prowess of a donut ⛳ Anyway, this was a nearly perfect week for Lisa, and she's hoping the back-half of the year will follow suit, a perfect pairing, like golf and wanting to throw your clubs in a lake 💦
GABBY - 11 POINTS
Not to be outdone, gabby CLINGS to first place after an equally stellar 11 point effort 💪 The Lisa / Gabby duo are starting to pull away from the crowd now 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️ with a FOUR point lead over second place 😗 Can the BEST looking accountant this side of the statement of cash flows take the VICTORY??? 🏆 I'm not sure, but she's hoping to close out her stellar first half with an even better back-half. It's another perfect pair, like Assets and Liabilities + Shareholder Equity (How Gabby manages to show up to work each day is beyond me, I fell asleep just typing "Shareholder Equity" 🤓)
VAL - 11 POINTS
... 🤨 ... 😨 ... 😲 ... 😱 Well paint me yellow and call me a bridge because VALERIE DAIGNEAULT has scored ELEVEN POINTS this week 🎉🎉🎉 AND she's moved into FOURTH place, the best she's done since WEEK ONE 🤯 It may be a little early, but screw it, the Commish is DECLARING that Val is an official title CONTENDER 🎽👟 Here's hoping that Val can extend the hot streak with a strong finish, combing the first-half and second-half together into a perfect pairing, like Supreme Court Justices and unnecessarily long black robes (I swear RBG was hiding a smokeshow under those emperor sized bedsheets 🔥🔥🔥 ... I'm definitely going to hell)
ABBY - 11 POINTS
WHAT IS GOING ON 😵 Now Abby is getting in on the fun, with her HIGHEST point total of the season. 💯💯 Enough to FINALLY bump her out of last place, where she's been since week 4. Is this a turning point for Señora Big Spur, or is the rest of her season going to have her administering herself some therapy? 👩‍⚕️ Hopefully the back half of Abby's season continues the trend of greatness. We DON'T want it to pair well with her atrocious first half. They should NOT go together, like Abby and blue eyeshadow. In other news, her romance with Braveheart is going great:
Tumblr media
JANIE - 10 POINTS
Janie manages to turn in yet another solid ten pointer this week, keeping her firmly in the hunt 🏹🦌 and inching her into THIRD place 😬 With some clever picks for Seattle and Tampa Bay, she's kept herself in the running for the FIRST place trophy 🏆 Very impressive considering she's always got to be on alert for her number one fan and suicidal rat. another pairing that's leaves a lot to be desired: Small dogs and anything even mildly dangerous
Tumblr media
JJ - 9 POINTS
JJ hasn't thrown in the towel yet! ⛱ Keeping himself alive with a totally RESPECTABLE 9 points. However, he'll have to do better in the back half to have a shot at the CASH 💲💲💲 Not sure how I'm feeling about his current strategy of transforming himself into father time 🧔 Don't know how exactly it's going to help him pick football teams, but I'm excited to watch his slowly go from George Clooney to Robin Williams
Tumblr media
PEYTON - 9 POINTS
A slight stumble keeps Peyton in second place, FOR NOW 😳 Our favorite baritone has other sports accomplishments 🏈🎾🏒 to speak of this week, after my BOI slammed himself a hole in one out of the disc golf links 1️⃣ So not only is everyone reading this better than me at regular golf, THEY ARE BETTER AT DISC GOLF TOO. It shouldn't be a surprise my man's got the skills, he has an advantage over us vertically normal people
HOW NORMAL PEOPLE SEE DISC GOLF:
Tumblr media
HOW PEYTON SEES DISC GOLF:
Tumblr media
RUSTY - 8 POINTS
They are many things Rusty can do. You want the finest custom house designed to your specifications? Boom 🏡 done. You want a steak so delicious that Gordon Ramsey would shed a tear of joy? got it 😢 You want a bourbon and ginger that will have you waking up in a Tijuana dumpster? order up 🍺 But if you need someone to pick a football team for you, you better go ahead and give Gabby a call 📞 I think PICKING things isn't really dad's strong suit. My homie got himself 15 lottery tickets this weekend. all those tickets, and he had the same amount or right numbers as the number of times Brady has successfully gotten into a bar. Zero 0️⃣
JULIETTE - 6 POINTS
Oof 😬 If I could describe Juliette's past three weeks in a emoji, It would be 🥴 As she falls firmly into last place. All is not lost though, as the Tempe Typhoon still has a shot here people 🤑 If she can be STATE CHAMPION there's nothing she CAN'T do. Huge congratulations to JuJu on dat beat's BIG win. With this she's now Juuuuuuuust ahead of my all time state championship record:
Juliette - 1
Logan - 0
We've made it halfway people 🤩 and I can't wait to see who takes it home in the BACK HALF. STAY STRONG AND GET THAT MONEY 💰

Houston Astros win second World Series in 6 years
Updated on: November 5, 2022 / 11:37 PM
The Houston Astros defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 Saturday night in front of a raucous home crowd at Minute Maid Park to clinch the World Series and avoid what would have been a decisive Game 7 on Sunday. It marks the second World Series title in franchise history for the Astros, who also won in 2017.
After going down 2-1 in the series, the Astros rallied to win three straight games, including a historic Game 4 in which they threw a combined no-hitter, only the second no-hitter in World Series history, and the first since 1956.
As Alvarez's 450-foot home run blast disappeared, Astros starter Framber Valdez jumped and wildly screamed in the dugout as the crowd of 42,948 went into a frenzy waving their orange rally towels.
Astros manager Dusty Baker finally got his first title in his 25th season as a manager. The 73-year-old Baker, who had been to the World Series twice before as a skipper, became the oldest manager to win a World Series in his third trip as a manager to the Fall Classic. As a player he went three times with the Dodgers, winning it all in 1981. He entered Saturday's game as the winningest manager without a World Series title and improved to 2,094-1,790 with this most memorable victory.
"I got 2,000 wins and all they talk about is I haven't won the World Series yet," he said Thursday.
They can't say that anymore.
The title puts a bow on what has been a dominant season which saw the team win an American League-best 106 games. They went 7-0 in the first two rounds of the playoffs, sweeping both the Seattle Mariners, and then the New York Yankees.
However, this latest title comes as the Astros have been one of the most controversial U.S. sports teams in recent history, following the sign stealing scandal in which Major League Baseball determined the team used technology to steal signs during the 2017 and 2018 seasons – the former of which ended in their first title.
In January 2020, the league released a report in which it determined the Astros illegally used live game footage to steal signs from opposing pitchers and catchers and alerted their own batters about what pitch was coming by banging on a trash can.
At the time, MLB handed one-year suspensions to both general manager Jeff Luhnow and manager A.J. Hinch, who were both subsequently fired. The Astros also paid a $5 million penalty and forfeited their first and second-round picks in 2020 and 2021. No players were punished however.

Most of us as consumers focus on price, when what we should really focus on is value. The shift happens, when we focus on buying things that create more time, freedom, love, health, energy, creativity, leverage & resources for us ✍️🧠📝 . Congratulations to my clients who we helped WIN & GROW in this market 🏆🎉 . Yes we were able to negotiate really sweet seller credits and terms for them, and Yes this multifamily appraised higher than our purchase price, but what really made this deal irreplaceable is the VALUE ⚖️📈 . Yes it cashflows from Day 1. And once they add even more value by rehabing the units, they can justifiably and fairly raise the rental fees because it currently rents for below market value 🏡 . In a few years, once more people move in the area, and job growth reaches new heights, the property's value will go along with it, as its utility increases as well. Win-Win-Win 🏡🏘🏢 . This is their generational wealth and freedom retirement plan. Not their first, and definitely not their last. I am beyond thankful that they have given me their trust and continued business 🙏 . Do you know anybody that's been thinking of buying or selling their multiplex, multifamily or multiunit property or building as well? Please let me know how we could consult and guide them in this journey! 😊🙏 . Teddy Lim (林浩宇) 🏡: John L. 2021 Part 2 It was nothing short of another exhausting year but a big one nonetheless. Mishi and I wrapped up our time in Seattle and moved to Memphis. Who gave us permission?? Looks like the weird and uncertainty of the previous 2 years are going to continue into this new year but I’m excited to keep exploring our new city and see what else has in store for us 🎉

Are your old-school photos labeled & organized in albums📒? Most of our pictures are in boxes, loosely grouped by the decades, but not really🗃️. A few are occasionally pulled & end up in a separate box📥. They’re the ones mostly seen here. My personal digital photos aren’t much better🤳. I don’t know how it is for you, but the core people in my life generally stay in my life🤗. A few are either jettisoned or fade along the way🚫. It’s not that different from friends on IG. Sometimes I think about a friend here that I haven’t seen for a long time & try to find them⌛. Do you do that? I mention disorganized photos📚 because I was looking for a Polaroid I took of a friend, @lauraurbanperry & couldn’t find it! I was going to include it here🤷‍♀️. Laura worked as a graphic designer & web designer & we first met in the late ‘70s/early ’80s 👭. Monday, I was scheduled to send page designs & images for a website to a WordPress developer💻, but Sunday night, the developer bailed🏃‍♀️. So, Monday was chaotic😲, but thankfully, Laura helped me connect with Scott Marlow, a WordPress pro🤝. Hooray🎉 Scott is smart & talented👍, pleasant, professional & efficient, plus he used to live in West Seattle, not far from our store, @alkisurfshop🏖️. So, we are off & running, thanks to Laura🏃‍♂️! They say old friends are best🏆. It’s beautiful how longtime friends come through for us. I feel such gratitude to the terrific people in my life🙏. So, I grabbed photos from the past 5 decades, Including @barbarajweaverlloyd in the 1970s, me & my husband in the 2000s, & @jackandpele at Alki Surf shop in 2016. It’s a lost cause for us to organize our photos into albums🖼️, so they will stay in boxes. But I love real photographs. They’re tangible reminders of moments in time 🕰️. Are your photos organized🤔?
