Horror was once a rare gaming genre, with little variety, typified by the gameplay styles of Resident Evil and Silent Hill. With the rise of the indie scene, we suddenly saw a massive increase in horror games, such as Five Nights at Freddy’s, Choo Choo Charles, and Poppy Playtime, which took the gameplay and themes in different directions. While horror was seen primarily as an adult-oriented genre, some of these indie horror games became popular with kids. In 2019, Tequila Works, the Spanish developer of such games as Deadlight and Rime, released a horror game that was not only more accessible to families but actually stars a kid, has a Pixar-esque art style and is focused on psychological horror more along the lines of Silent Hill, rather than focusing on jump scares. And they released it… as an exclusive on Google Stadia, Google’s failed experiment of a game-streaming service. (Google even had a deal where people who paid for Stadia Pro could get Gylt as a pack-in game.) In 2023, after the fall of Stadia, Gylt managed to break out and make its way to PlayStation, Xbox and the PC, followed by a Switch release in 2024.

So, uhhh... What about Stadia?

But hey, at least you're still around after Google discontinued the system...

(So much for all of the broken promises Google said Stadia would be the ultimate gaming platform that it couldn't even compete against the other platforms though the concept of it was actually really cool if it was handled the right way.)

(Okay, wow... we have another reveal in the same week with the first being N-Gage who joined us yesterday of which she is already excited but with Stadia, it doesn't seem like it but she still wants to have some fun on here with the others and see what people online have to say about her. ^u^)

(Of course, Stadia is based on the look of the controller as well as the orange and maroon colors of the Stadia logo which go very well with Stadia's appearance above. Don't worry everyone, it may look like she's unhappy because of the discontinuation of her system, she's actually a very chill one to hang out with when she's not feeling down.)

(UPDATE PLEASE READ) So there was a small bit of complications on our ends as the mods because it turns out that one of the other mods was supposed to do a picture of Stadia of which I was completely unaware of when I uploaded this picture. Right now, I have to fully figure out all of the pictures I'm planning to do in the future as the other mods figure out theirs. I will be doing more pictures soon to respond to everyone that has sent us messages after everything is planned in a way that I can do some pictures without having two versions of the same picture in the future.

Google will shut down Stadia on January 18, 2023 All hardware purchases made through Google Store, and all game and add-on content purchases made through Stadia will be refunded by mid-January 2023.

For many years, Google has invested across multiple aspects of the gaming industry. We help developers build and distribute gaming apps on Google Play and Google Play Games. Gaming creators are reaching audiences around the world on YouTube through videos, live streaming and Shorts. And our cloud streaming technology delivers immersive gameplay at massive scale.

A few years ago, we also launched a consumer gaming service, Stadia. And while Stadia's approach to streaming games for consumers was built on a strong technology foundation, it hasn't gained the traction with users that we expected so we’ve made the difficult decision to begin winding down our Stadia streaming service.

We’re grateful to the dedicated Stadia players that have been with us from the start. We will be refunding all Stadia hardware purchases made through the Google Store, and all game and add-on content purchases made through the Stadia store. Players will continue to have access to their games library and play through January 18, 2023 so they can complete final play sessions. We expect to have the majority of refunds completed by mid-January, 2023. We have more details for players on this process on our Help Center.

The underlying technology platform that powers Stadia has been proven at scale and transcends gaming. We see clear opportunities to apply this technology across other parts of Google like YouTube, Google Play, and our Augmented Reality (AR) efforts — as well as make it available to our industry partners, which aligns with where we see the future of gaming headed. We remain deeply committed to gaming, and we will continue to invest in new tools, technologies and platforms that power the success of developers, industry partners, cloud customers and creators.

For the Stadia team, building and supporting Stadia from the ground up has been fueled by the same passion for games that our players have. Many of the Stadia team members will be carrying this work forward in other parts of the company. We’re so grateful for the groundbreaking work of the team and we look forward to continuing to have an impact across gaming and other industries using the foundational Stadia streaming technology.

I’ll give Google Stadia this: they are actually refunding users rather than telling them to go fuck themselves. I shouldn’t have to applaud that since it should be the default, but “go fuck yourself” is such a common industry response that it is worth noting when someone doesn’t do it.
