I was a little surprised by shinsou's voice, i don't remember it being that.. deep? mature? idk what the word is, but it doesnt sound like a teenager (watching the dub btw) tho i start to get used to it again

I couldn't help but think the whole proclaiming rivalry against deku was funny, like idk why, but i thought it was ridiculous

The animation during the racing part was just amazing, specifically the part where shoto freezes the zero-pointer. Like, god damn they know how to animate ice. On the subject of the race, i would like to give props to deku's whole plan, cuz damn his plan was pretty smart

I'm kind of surprised that momo just let mineta hang onto her like that during the race, if i was her i would've dropped kicked him instantly, zero hesitation

The cavalry battle was fun to watch, and where class 1b gets introduced in the series! Monoma such a smart lil shit and i love him for it; bakugo need a chill pill dear god, tho it was funny with him hitting kirishima's head lol. Hatsume also gets spot light too and i love her chaotic energy, also the beginning of Uraraka's jealousy.

I am a bit confused as to how shinsou even won? like his quirk requires the target to respond back to him, so did tetsutetsu's team all just replied back and get mindcontroled? i mean ok ig

When todoroki pulled deku aside and basically trauma dumped on him, i did not expect bakugo to have overheard that convo, like i did not remember him eavesdropping before, but tbf it was a short clip of him so it was easy to forget

"Are you All Might's secret love child or something?" gets me every fucking time🤣

The fact ojiro withdrew when he felt like he didnt deserve to go into the finals was just, hhhhh hun no you deserve it, but honestly that was very (as kirishima said) manly of him to do. And kendo offering tetsutetsu's team to go into the finals was just, respect. This is why she's class rep.

Now the real fun of the sports festival begins

Deku vs shinsou. Ojiro literally told him not to respond to anything shinsou says, but yet he still fell for it, cmon dude. The past users of one for all were like "eyo no, you are not losing to this weak ass man." I do feel bad for shinsou, like dude deserves to be a hero, i hope he gets in class 1a, or at least 1b. The two boys could get a long a bunch, i mean, deku doesn't mind talking to him even after being mindcontroled. Tho it is funny that shinsou just kept mindcontrolling him everytime he responded, but at the same time pls stop doing that, he's just trying to have a conversation

Shoto vs sero. Okay, the speed sero was able to tape shoto and swing him almost out of the ring was impressive, but of course, its no match for shoto. Tho his attack was a bit overkill. The crowd screaming out 'nice try' for sero was nice of them tho

Denki vs shiozaki. Her speech in the beginning was mildly funny. Denki just thinking that she's cute and asking her on a date... not really the time for that, but he got his priorities straight, i guess. Tho really, shiozaki should be in class 1a with how powerful her quirk is, but then again it would be hell to draw her hair

Kendo karate chopping monoma to unconsciousness will always be funny

Iida vs hatsume. I don't actually remember what happened in this fight the 1st time i watched it, so this is gonna be fresh to me. Honestly, the whole round was hilarious, it was just a straight up ad for her support gear. Poor iida, he just wanted a fair fight

Now, speed round! Aoyama vs mina. Not much to say here, just mina showing off her dance moves and finishing the battle. Poor aoyama, humiliating way to go // Tokoyami vs momo. That was actually pretty fast dang, momo was recommended yet tokoyami still beat her. Shows how powerful dark shadow is // Kirishima vs tetsutetsu. Like looking into a mirror, of course it ends with a draw, the two are really hard bros

"..bakugo wouldn't use the full power of his explosions on a girl, right?" "yeah, he would" well, at least deku was honest about it😅

Bakugo vs uraraka. Oh boy, this fight. Gotta commend uraraka's determination, she planned out a good strategy; using her jacket as a decoy in the smoke, taking all those hits to create her finishing move. But bakugo is merciless, he was going to win no matter what. Even if she got him floating, bakugo could've just used his explosions to propel himself around. Uraraka put up a good fight, she was just paired up to someone who can put up a better one. Tho at least bakugo saw her as an equal, with him not going easy on her; cuz she isn't some weak little girl, she's a hero in training giving her all and should be taken seriously.

Now, for some light heartedness; Kirishima vs tetsutetsu, electric boogaloo. Such manliness, such raw chivalry. Two bros, having an arm wrestling match, 1 feet apart cuz they're just bros

The talk between the urarakas was sweet, she definitely needed to hear that from her dad. Speaking of dads, deku standing up to endeavor for shoto there was just amazing, someone had to tell that asshole

Now, the main event; Deku vs shoto. This whole fight is just deku being shoto's therapist, except with violence. Starting off with lovely ice animations, then bloody broken bones! Seriously tho, how tf does deku still push thru with dat much pain?? like boy is 15 and he's barely used his quirk. On the sidelines, bakugo thinking like a nerd as he watches. He may be an angy boi, but he is a smart angy boi. Now the ✨traumatic backstory✨ seriously tho, can't wait to see endeavor get his ass thoroughly kicked. Baby shoto is utterly adorable tho, must protect mah bby boy. Look wat you did endeavor, you fucked up a perfectly good child, look at him he has anxiety. "IT'S YOUR QUIRK NOT HIS" gets me every time. And then, FIRREEEE🔥🔥 and a SWOOSH and a BANG and- you get my point. That whole part was animated amazingly; deku rocketing across the ice, shoto using both sides at the same time to make such an epic explosion, the ice and fire. The pro heroes' reaction to the blast were kind of funny lol. And then it ends with shoto being half shirtless, they had to do it huh. Not complaining tho >.>

Now, on to the semi finals!

Iida vs shoto. I should be focused on the fight, but damn why is shoto so frickin pretty here?? Ahem, i digressed. That kick to the back tho, like with how fast iida was going wouldn't that have broken his spine? then again this is anime. Can't believe for someone smart like iida, he forgot that shoto could freeze shit in close range, like boi it was pretty obvious

Okay I agree with the other anon about dating someone better than Katsuki, but hear me out. Rival Shoto dating y/n.

Yes yes I know Deku is the shonen rival but something about Todoroki being Bakugo real rival lives in my head rent free. I love my boy Deku but he imo is in a league of his own. Where’s Shoto and Bakugo are more on actual equal footing. They both got top tier quirks naturally. Both were considered the best before entering UA. And let’s not forget the battle training in season one with All Migjt. The look on Katsukis face when he realized he wasn’t shit compared to my baby boy Shoto is ingrained in my mind forever. BOY WAS SHOOK! 😂

Which brings me to rival Shoto in your AU. He’s the total opposite of Bakugo. While he never dated anyone (I see endeavor still being a controlling dick no matter the AU so that’s definitely his doing) he has a level of respect for women that just makes him the dream guy of every girl on campus. He’s quiet and reserved but will open up to the right people (DekuSquad mainly). Unintentionally funny like in canon but unlike canon he’s more socially aware? Like he can tell when a girl is hitting on him, and he always lets them down gently with reasons that will have them like “damn rejection hurts but I appreciate the honesty.” He’s so charming and respectable that he’s dubbed the “most wanted man on campus”. Shoto is who the girls want, Katsuki is who they settle for 💅🏽

The drama that would rock the campus if Shoto was confirmed to be crushing hard on Y/N. The girls: jealous. Katsuki: seething. and our baby Y/N is just sitting here like “heart broken. No dates till after graduation” which would lowkey work in Shotos favor somce he’s planning on ditching his dad once he can. So cue the two toned savior repairing Y/N’s heart “platonically”. And everyone is just sitting on the sidelines mad and bothered (Katsuki included)!

Season 1 Episode 1- “Midoriya Izuku: Origin” (part 1)

it’s hard to imagine a time when my hero academia wasn’t popular. it’s reached a level of mainstream where you can find merchandise of it in any old target and not just hot topic. it’s the modern shonen anime, but it wasn’t always. on the first page of the first volume of mha, horikoshi leaves his readers with a note telling them that he tends to draw things that he enjoys, and that he hopes that people find it as fun as he does. i wonder how the horikoshi who wrote that note would feel about his story the way it stands right now? but this isn’t about the manga, this is about the loud, the lively, and the animated anime! every story has to start somewhere, and we’re starting with episode one of season one of MY HERO ACADEMIA!

so everyone who’s anyone knows about wing kid and how he was heavily implied to be the winged noumu in hosu. he’s called tsubasa by the fandom, and even the wiki calls him that, but to be real with you i don’t know if they ever say his name anywhere??? kinda wack, if you ask me. why doesn’t anybody talk about fingers over here? what a guy he is. i think i named him oshiro in a fic from a million years ago, but for the life of me i cannot remember why

aaand here’s our good green boy! protagonist of my hero academia, future greatest hero, midoriya izuku! yeah i know he’s going to be called izuku midoriya in this, but i’m used to calling that so i’m not changing it lol. one of the funny things about watching the english version of mha is hearing izuku being voice acted by justin briner. the first couple of times i heard him in the dub were incredibly jarring, because i knew briner from one thing before mha and that was teamfourstar’s final fantasy 7 machinabridged where he plays a kind of douchey cloud strife and swears a lot. the shift from that to this will never not be bewildering

the funny thing about this opening is i’m pretty sure i’ve haven’t heard the full thing since i watched season 1 with my brother nearly 4 years ago. it’s wild seeing it again. season 1 has been out of my brain for ages.

i really like that izuku has colored lineart in this part, it looks so fun and festive

good lord i forgot shouto’s costume looked like that. 0/10, wouldn’t recommend. the white isn’t actually that bad though, it’d be interesting to see his modern costume with his original costume’s color palette

oh also, get used to me spelling bakugo like bakugou and shoto like shouto. i’ve been on ao3 too long to use anything else

all in all, this opening’s pretty neat! i don’t think it’s super standout in any particular way, but i also don’t think it really has to be. it’s a nice quick way of showing off mha’s huge cast and while it doesn’t dive super deep into any of the characters, we won’t be diving super deep into any of them for this season anyways so it’s not a huge deal. this opening feels shorter than i remember.

because of how much the lore of mha is constantly thrown our way, it’s easy to forget that there was an episode where people didn’t already know the story of how quirks came to be. this shot feels very much like it’s supposed to be humorous, but that father also just looks kind of terrified. we know in mha that quirks were not always as well loved as they are now, so it makes you think. i wonder what happened to this baby? if they faced extreme oppression for their newly mutant powers? if they were cursed for being the start of the quirk plague? if they were revered for bringing about the dawn of a new era? i hope they had a happy life. i don’t think they did, but i hope. it’s also interesting that this baby was born with a quirk— something that i think isn’t seen as much in the modern day.

i’ve seen a lot of people headcanon that during the dawn of quirks, the age that people came into their quirks often skewed much later (with people finding their quirks in their teenage or even young adult years) but i wonder if maybe it’s the opposite. that, maybe, back during the dawn of quirks, quirk users were always born with their quirks? and maybe it was only after several generations that quirks began coming in later? maybe i’m thinking too hard about this

so around this time they drop the population of the planet that’s quirked— which, if you don’t know, is 80%. people have poked this number a lot because of the other part of it. the fact that 20% of the population is quirkless means that, on average, one in five people you meet should be quirkless. but, the thing is, besides izuku, melissa, and some manga spoilers, we never meet any other naturally quirkless people. and that makes those numbers seem a little sketchy. people have come up with their own explanations, the popular few being that most of that 20% are from older generations or that 20% is just the global population of quirkless people, in japan it’s way lower. a part of me wonders what counts as a quirkless person?

take tokoyami and ashido for example— both of them have their own primary quirks that we see them using in combat, but if you take those away, they also have their non-quirk mutations. if ashido didn’t have acid and if tokoyami didn’t have dark shadow, would they be labeled as quirkless? or would these mutations be considered their primary quirks instead of secondary quirk characteristics? or even just look at izuku! his hair’s green for goodness’ sake! if he were born a century ago, he’d probably be called quirked, even without something flashy like firebreath or telekinesis! the classification of quirks confuses me to this day.

do they ever say what death arms’ quirk is? hold on let me check the wiki. no. they do not. i heard some electricity sounds earlier, so i wonder if his strength comes from electricity or something? this nerd doesn’t even have a name, but i suppose even without a name he still has a page on the wiki, which is more than what can be said for some others (looks pointedly at the lack of a page for the second and third users of one for all)

i’ve always wondered— is that supposed to be a mask, or is that just what backdraft’s face looks like? it seems like it’d be a weird addition to what otherwise looks like a pretty basic firefighter costume. i wonder if he’s made of water under there and that’s what he’s using. new headcanon?

despite seeming to be sort of new on the scene, kamui woods already has a pretty avid fanbase. izuku knows his super move before he even uses it and he’s got some fangirls in the crowd. he also makes it to the got danged number 7 spot on the hero rankings!! despite this, he also just has this sort of smalltime feel? i feel like he’s the sort of hero where you’d bring him up to your non-hero-nerd friend, and they’d be like, “sorry, who?” and you’d have to say, “kamui woods! he’s, like, the latest up and comer!” and you’d have to explain his entire history but your friend would be like “i thought hawks was the latest up and comer. is this kamui guy younger than hawks?” and you’d have to explain to your friend that, no, kamui woods is actually a good six years older than hawks, but he’s an up and comer in a different way-! and then your friend would get kind of bored so you’d start talking about something else like the fact that all might’s been spotted more often around musutafu lately. kamui woods is once again left forgotten

this is mt lady’s debut as a pro hero, but she’s already 22. did she work as a sidekick behind the scenes for the past 4 years after graduating hero school, or (gasp) did she go to hero college!? i’ve always found it sort of weird (and kind of messed up, child soldiers and what have you) that people start training to be heroes in high school. while it makes a certain amount of sense that you’d want to start training as soon as possible to get the most out of your quirk as quick as possible, it also just feels kind of fucked up? it makes a lot more sense to me, at least, that if a person wants to maybe be a hero when they grow up, they might not want to commit to that right out of middle school. it makes sense that people might want to wait until they’re a little bit older and knowledgeable about the world to make the leap into heroics. hero college just makes so much sense to me! in retrospect, the idea that the best hero school in the country raises fledgling heroes from puny little fifteen year olds just feels kind of predatory. maybe wait until they’re legal adults to send them to the wolves. good on mt lady for waiting to go to finish high school before committing to a life of heroics. you weren’t made a child soldier :)

honestly everything we hear about how heroics function in the modern day is kind of fucked. the fact that heroics has been monetized to the extent that it has, making it so that heroes are more likely to chase fame and glory so they’ll get the biggest paycheck is dumb as all hell. it means that rural areas aren’t going to get many or potentially even any heroes, and it means that even just most urban heroes are going to stick to well trafficked areas. there aren’t going to be a lot of heroes out at night, and there aren’t going to be a lot of heroes in the communities that really need them. the heroics industry being an industry is the worst thing to ever happen to the justice system, but it makes for a fascinating thing to dissect

and finally, over a third of the way into the episode, we get our title card! i actually really like the “origin” episodes, and i like that a lot of the episodes (and, i guess, the manga chapter names, since that’s what most of the episode names are based on) have callbacks and theming. it’s nice when creators do that. i once wrote a story where all of the chapter titles were sentences in a poem i wrote, so if you read through the chapter list, you’d get a poem that vaguely summarized the story. i never finished that story, funny enough, but i’d like to do a similar thing someday. it was fun to write a story hidden inside a story. i’m getting off track, what was i talking about again? right, origins.

oh speaking of naming themes, i love horikoshi’s place names. if you don’t know, most of the fictional places in mha are named after star wars planets! aldera high school comes from alderaan, the planet the leia was a princess of before the death star blew it up. i didn’t take a screenshot of it, but the place where that first villain was at was called tatooin station, named after tatooine, the skywalker homeworld. musutafu itself comes from mustafar, the planet were jedi go to die (i think). i’ll try to keep an eye out for these and explain them whenever possible. i think it’s a neat little naming joke that horikoshi snuck in there!

i love seeing crowd shots in mha, because it’s clear that horikoshi always puts a lot of effort into making all these one-off characters that will never be seen again.

it’s a little sad seeing izuku back here. he always has his head down and he’s trying to look as small as possible. it looks like he’s always avoiding eye contact for the most part, and he puts more of his attention into writing in his notebooks than on the teachers speaking to him. we know he’s pretty dang smart, but i wonder just how smart he is. he doesn’t do better than katsuki in ua’s midterms, but it’s a near thing. i suppose he’d have to be a straight a student to get into ua

once again, i love me a good crowd shot, especially when i get to see all of those people’s quirks. some of these quirks actually look sort of interesting, and i like that we have all four elements in the class— earth, water, fire, and wind. i like that one kid in the very back second from the left who isn’t cheering or anything but he is glowing as hard as he can

on a more serious note: once again, it feels very weird that this teacher is just like “i’d hand out some career aptitude tests, but i know you’re all just going to try to be heroes!” i don’t know if this is an aldera thing (because in all honesty it might) or if this is what it’s like in other junior high schools as well, but the idea that you’re not going to even encourage these fourteen year olds to think of anything but heroics is just bad. especially when we know that most of them aren’t going to make it into hero schools. of course izuku and katsuki are the only two to get into ua, but i doubt that many of the other students even make it into minor hero schools. what’s more likely is they all apply to a handful of hero schools, fail the entrance exams, and get shuffled into whatever high school will take them because they didn’t think to apply to any non hero schools. the whole thing is just fucked and the teachers shouldn’t be encouraging this. also who’s that kid on the right? i love their head

and so we’re introduced to one bakugou katsuki, one of the more… contentious characters in my hero academia. i have a lot of thoughts and opinions about this kid, but i’m sure we’ll get to him later. i’m probably going to flip flop a lot between calling him katsuki and bakugou, so sorry if things get confusing.

two things to note here: number one is that katsuki’s classmates specifically call him “katsuki”. i’m pretty sure this is because these kids have all known each other since grade school, but it’s still interesting regardless. second thing is that katsuki’s classmates don’t actually seem to particularly like him— which, in all honesty, is not that big of a surprise. i see a lot of people call katsuki the “top dog” back at aldera, but while katsuki might be the “best” student, i don’t actually think he was all that popular with his peers. he might’ve had some lackeys who trailed after him, but i don’t think it was out of love for the guy

it’s very interesting to note that even among these hero hopefuls, the idea that katsuki (katsuki, best in their class, katsuki, with the strongest quirk, katsuki) is trying out for ua is far-fetched. none of the other students had the courage to dare to try out for the national hero school.

… well, except for one.

honestly the fact that izuku so much as wrote down that he wanted to apply for ua is a pretty ballsy move, especially when one considers that he’s, y’know, quirkless. he took a dive that nobody else in his class (besides katsuki obv) even had the courage to do. he may not have gotten in without one for all, but he would have tried, and that’s more than any of his other classmates (besides katsuki) can say.

also, izuku looks so panicked here. you can tell he hates being singled out. i’m sure he’d much prefer being ignored to being belittled. izuku’s whole situation pre-ua is just really sad in retrospect :( izuku’s so clearly not okay

izuku tries to explain to his classmates that ua got rid of the rule that bars the quirkless from trying out. which is. mmh. super fucked up actually? the fact that it was a rule that had to be “gotten rid of” is so intensely messed up, i don’t even know what to say. that’s, like, full on discrimination. until probably very recently, quirkless people weren’t even allowed to apply to ua, much less be allowed in. poor izuku really was doomed from the start

temporarily pushing aside the fact that when katsuki hears izuku’s applying for ua as well he immediately assumes that it’s going to be a him-or-izuku situation, this stylized shot is a very interesting peek into izuku’s psyche. he’s terrified of his classmates, even the ones who aren’t bearing down on him and threatening him with physical violence like katsuki is. this kind of fear is very learned, and i wonder what the other student’s of izuku’s junior high class did to him to make him so wary of him. y’know, beyond the obvious discrimination

i’m pretty sure in the dub, the nickname “deku” is supposed to be a portmanteau of “defenseless izuku” which is. kind of weird. but it means that in this scene we get katsuki calling izuku by his actual name, which is funny because he never does that in canon

after the sludge villain runs out of this store, we get a shot of this lady who’s activated a barrier in a panic. is the barrier always on or was it a fear response? does this count as illegal public quirk usage, or would it be shuffled aside as self-defense? what are the laws on public quirk usage? i need to know. it kills me.

oh wack i don’t remember the sludge villain wearing pants. i guess he probably wore normal clothes before his descent into villainy, y’know to look like a normal member of society. or as normal as he can be. as the sludge villain flees the scene of the crime, the shop owner(? employee?) calls him a monster, which i’m pretty sure is just a dub-ism, but that’s still super fucked up? he’s just a guy. he’s human, same as you and me, just with some sort of mutation quirk. i just know that all of the mutants in mha get so much shit for not looking perfectly human. people love quirks until they stop looking so pretty. then those people aren’t people anymore. just monsters. it’s no wonder the sludge villain stooped to villainy. i bet he couldn’t even get access to anything else

this is actually going to be a really common gripe from me that you’ll start hearing more often once we get a little further in, but i’m sometimes kind of a manga supremacist when it comes to anime. which is funny because i don’t think i’ve ever read a manga before i watched it’s corresponding anime. but one thing about mha is that horikoshi is actually an amazing artist and he’s so good at illustrating motion. this panel from the manga is the exact same moment as the one above from the anime, but something about the panel just hits so hard in a way that the anime’s portrayal just doesn’t. you’ll also see this gripe with certain shots when it comes to shading. horikoshi’s use of shading in the manga can be so striking, and to get to the anime and see all of that weight just stripped away with lower contrast colored shading is just kind of… meh. so, you might see me pull some panels from the manga here and there. if you haven’t read the mha manga, i’d certainly recommend it, even if you still just want to watch the anime as it comes out.

honestly, the fact that all might can just transform in this crowded ass street and not get spotted is fucking hilarious. missed opportunity: all might having to transform in phone booths. i guess it’s just canonical that japan is bad at noticing things in this universe

You wiggled nervously, sitting at the bar. It was about one thirty, a half hour left and nobody had made a move on you.

You sat there, bored expression on your face, sipping your drink lazily, tits out, just waiting for someone to do something.

You could feel eyes on you and it only made your excitement grow.

“Hi.” Finally, a slender man with wire rimmed glasses sits beside you at the bar. You give him your best smirk, lips still wrapped around your straw.

“Hi.” You say seductively, batting your eyes at him. He blushes, clearing his throat and straightening himself out.

“So uh....what are we drinking?”

Twenty minutes later, you’re with him in the alley of that shitty little bar. He’s got you pressed into the brick wall, knee between your legs and hands roaming your body as he bites and sucks at your skin. You do everything you can to keep the giddiness you feel from overflowing.

“Tell me....” you gasp as his mouth covers yours, “tell me you want me.”

“I want-“ before he can finish his sentence, his warmth is ripped away from you. You hear him shout and a loud thud.

When you open your eyes, Katsuki is leaning over you, cornering you against the building and caging you in with Izuku. You hear the sound of flesh meeting bone and know that Shoto is beating the man you met in the bar.

“The fuck do you think you’re doing?” Katsuki asks, he grabs your chin harshly, forcing you to look him in the eye. His are wide, filled with rage and jealousy as he looks over your disheveled appearance.

You pout.

“You three wouldn’t fuck me. I had to find someone who would.” Izuku scoffs, bringing his knife up to your throat and dragging it along your collarbone.

“You were injured in our last fight remember? We’re not gonna be rough with you. Not until you’re all better. Then...” he leans in, nipping at your ear. “We’ll toss you around like the rag doll you are.” Katsuki chuckles. He reaches down, roughly grabbing your sex and pressing his thumb against your clit. You gasp.

“Dirty little slut. Maybe she likes the pain....I don’t mind roughing her up a bit.” He leans down, kissing you hard, it’s all tongue and teeth and rough.

Just as Katsuki pulls always, Shoto pushes himself forward, reaching out and grabbing you by the back of the head. He pulls you close, pressing his mouth to your already bleeding lips. He shoves his tongue down your throat, licking every crevice of your mouth.

“You’re mine.” He growls, his eyes just as dark and angry as the others. His knuckles are black and blue, but he seems unaffected by it. “Don’t you ever forget that. You. Belong. To. Me.”

Well you had certainly done it. Katsuki and Izuku manhandled you all the way home, snarling and bickering with each other and you, the jealousy rolling off of them in waves. Shoto brought the man you had flirted with back to the house too and chained him to the bathroom toilet while he was still unconscious.

The four of you barreled your way into the bedroom. Despite being injured, they weren’t easy on you. They fucked you rough and hard. Pounding into you the reminder that you belonged to them, and God help anyone, who ever tried to get in the way of that.

You were sitting on the bathroom sink, swinging your legs while you waited for your boyfriends to come back. The man you had flirted with at the bar was finally waking up. You smiled at him sadistically. His eyes were wide and his voice trembled with terror.

“W...why are you doing this to me?” You giggled.

“I like when they get jealous.” You shrug, “you have really pretty eyes.” You say as an afterthought. Before he can say another word your boyfriends are back. Katsuki stands between your legs and cradles your face, bringing you in for an uncharacteristically sweet kiss.

“Go to bed.” He commands.

You do as he says.

The next morning when you wake up, they’re not in bed with you, but you hear them in the kitchen. As you roll over to get up you stop.

Sitting on the end table by your side of the bed was the man’s eyes, pulled from his head and placed on a silver platter.

You’d never admit just how happy that made you, or how sweet you thought the gesture was.

BNHA Rewatch: Episode 23 “Shoto Todoroki: Origin”

This episode is not ok.

First. Frame. I am not ready.

We open up proper with Deku and Shoto sizing each other up in the ring. Shoto opens, same as always, with ice. Deku counters, same as always, with fingersnap. Not the Roy Mustang kind. Visually, I’ve noticed that aside from the blasts, this episode is made up almost entirely of uncomfortable close-ups.

“He’s prepared to counter me, even if it means destroying himself.” YES. (oh god the horror has only just begun)

Deku just keeps going...and going...

This part is so suspenseful. At any moment, for Deku, it’ll all be over. We’ve locked in a clear limit for how the fight can play out (and then we just throw that limit in the trash, because this is BNHA where rules are stupid).

Shoto in this scene is not looking at Midoriya. He’s thinking about his father. He thanks Midoriya for dragging things out to piss off Endeavor. He sounds condescending here - like he didn’t expect Deku to last even this long. This is a very badly influenced Shoto, one ‘drowning in resentment’, as he puts it later on.

This bit signals a sea change in the fight. Deku is aware that he’s outmatched, but then he notices Todoroki shaking. This isn’t just an opening to him, either, a chance to beat Todoroki. It’s a sign that he has, in fact, forced Shoto to start exhausting himself, but Shoto is stubbornly refusing to go all out still. And this means, to Deku, that Shoto doesn’t think he’s worth it. And that pisses him off.

yikes. 

This decision from Deku drops the jaw the first time around. He just...breaks his hand. He breaks it a second time. (and that’s just the beginning)

Deku is furious that Todoroki is disrespecting the efforts of all his friends and rivals (who we see in a montage). He is being disrespected himself too. Todoroki is holding back and Deku won’t let it happen. He won’t let Todoroki win without giving it his all. Only if Todoroki is willing to go as far as everyone else. 

Shoto assuming Deku was bribed by Endeavor to get him to use his fire side is...really sad.

For the record: I like Justin Briner just fine. He’s good. But...Daiki Yamashita is the superior Deku. I have different picks for faves in sub v Dub here, but between these two it’s no contest for me. Yamashita’s acting, especially in this ep, haunts me. This scene stands out a lot. Sinai...sinai...sinai...sinai...It’s like a madness mantra. Because Deku is crazy. Beyond crazy.

Aizawa does a small meta on Midoriya here, reasoning that he’s ‘just doing the best he can with what he has’. I’d say that’s part of it, but as we’ve already seen, there’s more going on here. Pride. Friendship. Absolute Insanity. Just to name a few.

“What’s driving him”? So so much. An internal drive to prove he can be useful for something. A desire to be just like all Might. Some pride and a need to win. A desire to help someone in pain no matter what. And a dash of madness.

ashkjhkjahrih Yep. What did I say. ABSOLUTELY FUCKING INSANE. ABSOLUTE MADMAN IS HIS NICKNAME FOR A REASON. NO SANE PERSON SHOULD WANT TO FUCK WITH HIM. HOW THE FUCK TO YOU BEAT SOMEONE WHO WILL DESTROY THEIR OWN BODY TO WIN A FREAKING EXHIBITION MATCH?!? 

“I want to be a smiling, cool hero”. This is, in so many reasons, why I think Midoriya is such a great character. What makes a great character, to me, is Motivation. 3 pieces of motive: What they want, why they want it, and how far they’ll go to get it. Want: To be the World’s Greatest Hero. Why: To save people and prove he’s worth something. How far: ALL THE WAY.

“If you become number one without using your full power, then I don’t think you’re serious about denying him everything.” OMG

no this fucking flashback “He’s only 5  years old” out of my way “ka-san?” those words have dug their way into my subconscious. the horror. shoto being denied the chance to be around his siblings. Shoto not getting a life. Endeavor’s abuse. Rei’s breaking voice. I can’t. I can’t I can’t

I hate that I agree with Endeavor’s decision to put Rei in an institution. I hate seeing bb Shoto cry. the music. this scene its too good. the feelings are...every time...I just...

Endeavor: Anime’s most evil Soccer Mom.

“Why are you smiling?” Because he’s crazy, Shoto. You haven’t noticed this? “You must be crazy.” OK, he has noticed.

You’re a little unsettled yourself, I see. (I am convinced that all three of them have some kind of mental disorder. Midoriya, Bakugou, and Todoroki. They’re all crazy. In 3 very different ways.)

The Absolute Madman vs the BiFire-IceMan. this image haunts me. 

This episode’s animation is quite possibly the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen in anime. Or animation, for that matter. There’s something about the way BNHA is animated, the designs, the sakuga, that is...I don’t know how to describe it. “Midoriya, eregato.” You said it, Shoto.

Midoriya is knocked out of the tournament in the quarter-finals. This, my friends, is how you subvert expectations in a satisfying manner. Jaws have hit the floor.

So there are, essentially, 3 episodes in BNHA that I consider not just the best episodes of this series, but to be episodes that kind of transcend. Episodes that are so good, so powerful, so mind-blowing to behold for the first time, that everything else feels a little bit less by comparison. This is the first of those three. Episode 23. It’s one of the best episodes of the show. I’m tempted to call it the best. It’s so hard to watch. And so worth it to see. If you watch BNHA for no other purpose, at least try and get to this one.

Izuku:  His movements are...Baku: Slower. It’s called Finishing Each Other’s Sentences.

Midoriya is not only channelling Bakugou here in his desire to win against an opponent going all out, but also thinking of people like Kacchan, who go all out against opponents no matter who they are (re: Uraraka). And Deku has come to respect this. That, in part, motivates him here.

It's Just The Beginning...

Hi! My name is FreyaVoice of Certified Voice Artist Program Batch 6. I am currently a freshman at Miriam College High School in Quezon City. I enjoy watching anime, musicals, movies, talking to friends, listening to music, singing, and dancing!

⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒ My Backstory ⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒

Before joining CVAAP I always had this talent for voice acting. At the age of 7, I was able to learn a British voice accent from watching the whole Harry Potter series. My family and friends were all so impressed that I could sound exactly like Hermione Granger. But I knew I could do more. Nowadays, I am now trying to learn how to do other accents such as French, Russian, American, and the Queen's accent, aka, Received Pronunciation.

As the years went on I started to see other forms of impersonation, such as drag queens. As I watched RuPaul's Drag Race I was interested in 1 contestant. Specifically, Chad Michaels, who was known to be the most famous Cher impersonator. So by watching him I sort of ended up being able to speak just like her! But I still did some video watching to see how she talked and spoke in real life. I also listened to some of her music so that I can match my voice to hers when I sing her songs.

⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒ The Inspiration ⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒

Nowadays, I enjoy my time watching animes such as My Hero Academia, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Haikyuu!, and more! My Hero Academia caught my eye specifically as they usually held panels in which you can interact with the voice actors playing certain characters which I thought was really cool! I knew right then and there that I wanted a career such as that! I never knew how to become a voice actor. Based on the panels, the actors said that they just kept auditioning and got through their careers through trial and error.

Personally, I think my main inspiration would be J Michael Tatum. He dubs a good amount of notable anime characters such as Sebastian Michaelis, Tenya Iida, Erwin Smith, Rei Ryugazaki, and more! He was always such an inspiration to me when it comes to voice acting.

When it came to Japanese voice acting, it was a similar scenario. I idolize Kaji Yuki, one of the most famous “Seiyuus” in the world. He played characters such as Eren Jaeger, Shoto Torodoki, Kenma Kozume, Meliodas, and many more! He plays so many main characters to the point where his castmates called this the "Main character syndrome" in which he already forgets which character he's supposed to voice as! I believe he is one of the most influential people when it came to voice acting and wanting to become a seiyuu! Luckily, I am able to speak a little bit of conversational Japanese from learning at school from the 7th and 8th grades.

A couple of months pass by and my mom stumbled upon the CVAAP website! She suggested I read what it was about and what it aims to do for those who participate in it. What caught my eye was a picture of a voice actor standing beside Rob Paulsen. I recognized him! He was the original Raphael from The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Yakko Warner from Animaniacs! That's when I knew I was down for it! My mom was happy to support me as I started my journey through CVAAP!

⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒ CVAAP Day 1 ⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒

Although it took up almost my whole Saturday, my first day at the CVAAP program was fun and exciting! I got to meet all my new classmates and mentors, got to be introduced to what we need to do, etc.

It was also a bit challenging because of how the homework they gave us is already so much as if I'm attending a different school. The amount of homework is even more than what my normal school gives on a normal day. Honestly, I can go on and on about this but let's move on now from that deal with it.

Can't wait for more challenges that they put ahead of me!

⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒ Etymology of FreyaVoice ⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒⭒

When we had to think of a brand name for ourselves I thought of the name FreyaVoice. Freya is the Norse goddess of war, love, and beauty. That name symbolizes and reminds me that I should; 1) love my voice, 2) I can win this war by overcoming the requirements and tasks they give me, and 3) I should learn to accept the beauty of my voice also. I also thought of the word FreyaVoice as a play-on word of "free your voice", which is what I want to do for myself. It also shows my love for Norse Mythology.

I know I can do anything if I put my heart into it!
