Are Merch Mimics capable of using assimilation offensively against humans, for self-defense and otherwise? Like, if someone tried to break a toy/game/etc they were inhabiting, could the Mimic instead pull them in?
To a degree, yeah. I should mention though that Victor isn't "in" the TV in any magical sense; spoiler alert: he's the controller Vance is holding! Hence, the eye on the controller reacting to the dialogue. The Victor on the screen is actualy a model he rigged for a homebrew game he coded the old fashioned way, which responds to whatever inputs the controller sends to the Wii.
He actually is an active member of the homebrew community, and loves to mess with electronics the old fashioned way. Almost no one on the forums knows he's a toy bird, but are impressed nonetheless with his little projects, various rail-shooter games, and weird obsession with snarky anthropomorphic birds.
Victor could technically "jump into a game" on a tv screen, but it'd be a bit of a weird process if he doesn't know how to mod the game, so it'd look more like a shitty greenscreen effect rather than anything coherent. He'd need to learn in real time how the game is coded, how to inject arbitrary code into the system while it's running, etc etc. He CAN do that because he's a fucking NERD, but it wouldn't be a quick process at all.
I should also mention, mimics have an inherent ability to create dreams, since they come about from processing the thoughts and ideas of humans. If a human bonds with a mimic, such that the mimic now knows how the human thinks, they can pull a (somewhat) willing human into the dream when the human sleeps. So to wrap this all up: what Victor could do for a game he understands inside and out is pull a human into a dream that happens to match whatever he himself experiences as currently going on in the game. Basically the ultimate VR experience, with the mimic as a middle-man. Which might be something that'll happen in the comic soon....!
So that all seems a bit convoluted, right? Here's even more worldbuilding about matter assimilation by mimics below the cut. Stop here if you don't want a headache.
The reason so many hoops would be needed to pull a human into a game world is that assimilation is much easier on inert, inanimate objects that are not currently "in use" by a thinking thing, or something that relies on constant electrical signals to function. This can be something with brainwaves, or some other kind of animation like a normal robot. A mimic can convert a CRT TV that's turned off somewhat easily, but a TV that's turned on, with particles of every kind constantly moving into and out of it, is much harder to convert.
This means that humans and biological creatures in general are also trickier to convert, though it can still happen if done gradually enough. Hence, Victor wouldn't be able to rapidly convert Vance in one fell swoop, it'd be a whole process. It's easier to just pull a human into a dream instead, and if a mimic undersrands a video game, or a story in a book really well, they can basically make the fictional world into an extremely lucid reality for whatever human tags along with them.
I often describe mimics as just "jojo stands if they were corporeal and could just get up and move around on their own with no user"; you know how in jojo stand battles or old stories about magic curses, if you break the curse or kill the stand before its effect becomes permanent, all of the damage is magically undone? Like if you kill Green Day, the mold stand, all of the molding just instantly stops?
Mimics who use their powers of assimilation offensively work similarly; they can project their influence to a certain range, and partially assimilate matter in that range. If you knock out or kill the mimic, however, everything reverts to normal. A human who doesn't want to get converted can basically just turn around and walk away most of the time, or shoot the mimic, so the mimic in question needs to pull off some trick to get the human to stay within range for the assimilation to fully stick. A human can still break free and get out of range even if fully converted, but it's much harder, as assimilation usually means the mimic gaining greater control over the converted object in question. The exact range and effect mimics have is again like jojo stand ranges; it varies.
Different mimics have different affinities for different things. Victor can assimilate cheap electronics fastest because he likes them and understands how they work (it's why he's a toy bird mp3 player). Az can assimilate guns, and turn ammo into weird anomalous ammo with weird effects. Zachary is a genius who can assimilate any matter, including biological matter, faster than anyone... but he's also extremely picky and hates the sight of blood, so he only uses assimilation on things he really, really likes.
If I could somehow make another read more at this point, I would. It's gonna get messy:
What a weird power and setup though, right? Why? The true nature of mimics is unknown to most of them, but the deepest lore is that the first mimics were constructs made by a people long ago, who first made them as highly advanced machines that'd recognize the thoughts of their masters to fulfill any practical desire. Need a road built? Done. Need a ship repaired? Done. With physical needs all met, the people began to turn inward, and use the mimics to illustrate their own artistic ideas. Eventually, the will and consciousness of these people were assimilated and inherited by mimics, who themselves became people. Mimics spread, altered themselves, duplicated, deviated, fused, split, and wandered around. Getting into recreational wars, manifesting horrors and delights into reality because they could.
Somehow, after the dust settled, the strongest mimics, the angels, decide to set their sights to the stars, and observe other lifeforms develop technology and their own art. Did mimics come to earth millions of years ago, and simply watched humans grow, evolving with them in-tandem? Or did humans make the first mimics, and somehow became undone and set back to the stone age? The answer to this mystery is currently known only to the oldest of mimics. Except Zachary. He's old, but didn't care to remember.
This is generally why mimics seem so compatible with humans; they were made by either them, or people who were, for whatever the reason, very much like them, flaws and all. The ability to assimilate is basically the conversion of matter into a more malleable state of information. A virtually magical power, but this was achieved not through prayers and spells, but a very human-like obsession with developing technology to the point of exerting control over molecules, then atoms, then the lowest planks of matter. The obsession with scaling every mountain and crossing through every valley. To rip the natural world apart, and hopefully, put it back together before it's too late. Angels seek to ensure humanity walks the right path there, but with human's own desires and intent honored, for better or worse.
To answer your question: yes. A mimic of Mario can pull you into the game and you can jump with him and eat shitty low poly spaghetti with him.
The process for doing that is just convoluted and complicated, and you need to get to know each other a bit first. If he tries to use it as an attack though, it either won't work, or it might just wind up giving you mild brain damage.

"Just wanted to know if she could hang out is all." Mumbling is heard before Florence responds. "She said come over. She's almost done ripping out my- Y/n imma fuck you up!" Nick giggles hearing the siblings fighting. He hangs up the phone, quickly changing and catching an Uber to the house.
He arrives quickly, the home of the siblings not being too far from his own. He walks inside and follows the sound of arguing. "You're yanking on purpose!"
"No, you're just tender-headed and don't know how to sit fucking still!"
Nick opens the room door and the siblings look at him in surprise. it's almost uncanny how much the two look alike, but It makes sense with the two being twins. That's mainly how Nick and Y/n became so close, both of them relating to being a twin.
"Nick! " She shouts excitedly. She stands up, giving him a side hug before going back to doing Florence's hair. "I should finish up soon! Then we could go out or something." Nick nods and settles down on the beanbag in the corner.
The two fall into a conversation, the subjects changing quickly. as they talk, Nick can't help but to keep eyeing Florence, watching as his jaw clenches when Y/n separates the hair, or how his arms flex in his muscle tee when he hands Y/n a hair clip. The two males suddenly make eye contact and Nick freezes, does he give him a smile? Should he play it off like he was looking at something else?
Florence grunts and rolls his eyes making Nick want to curl up into a ball. Did he just make himself seem weird? Is Florence annoyed with him? Maybe he should leave and blame it on not feeling well.
"Ok!" Nick jumps and looks at Y/n who pushes Florence away from her. " You're done, now pay up!" She holds her hand out. The boy rolls his eyes, "go to my room and grab my wallet."
Y/n skips out of the room, leaving the boys alone.
"You like parties?" Florence randomly asks. Nick points to himself, "Me?" he questions. Florence chuckles and stands up, stretching his body out. Nick watches as his shirt rides up, the happy trail coming into view.
"Yes, you Nick. I wanted to know if you were up for a party this weekend."
His mouth runs dry at the question. He hates parties, but if Florence is inviting him, maybe he could go?
"I'll go... Is Y/n going?" Florence nods, taking his phone out. “Yeah,”
Nick swears he hears Florence mutter “unfortunately” but he has to be wrong. It has to be his disappointment that his best friend is tagging along that's making him hear things.
He begins to feel bad.
What’s wrong with him? Why does he want to be alone with Florence so badly?
He shakes his head, ridding those thoughts and smiles at Florence.
So here they are, at the party. Nick had lost track of Y/n a long time ago, so he stayed in the corner nursing a drink and scrolling through his phone.
"I invited you to this party to socialize Nicholas." He looks up and sees a half-lidded Florence. It's clear as day he was smoking, the weed making his eyes red. "Y/n was swapped away by a group of girls so I just stayed here." The taller of the two hums before taking Nick's hand.
"Dance with me then." Nick quickly shakes his head, going on a spiel on how he doesn't dance. "come on, you're not Corbin blue, dance with me!" He begins to drag Nick where everyone is. Florence starts moving his body to the beat of the song, trying to get Nick to do the same. Nick slowly begins to do so, his actions still shy.
The song changes to Intimidated by Kaytranada and H.E.R, and the two of them begin to get closer, Florence's hands grabbing his waist. Nick's heart begins to race and he goes to pull away, but Florence pulls him closer, "Relax, just dance with me." He whispers in Nick's ear.
Nick sucks in a breath and does as told. Their bodies move together, swaying with the beat.
Don't wanna waste the feel (feel) Like we could make it real 
Nick can't tell if he's hallucinating or not, it looks like Florence is getting closer to him.

He's not hallucinating, Florence is in fact getting closer to him. He can feel his breath fanning over his face, mainly on his lips. Nick's mind begins to run a mile a minute, is Florence going to make a move on him? Is he even Florences type? Nick is so in his head, he doesn't notice Florence smiling at him.

He snaps out of it and looks at the taller boy, only to be pulled into a kiss. It shocks him at first, but he feels his whole world blossoming into color. The music and chatter around them now sounding muffled.
The kiss lasts for a few seconds before they pull away from each other, breathing softly.
"Y/n can't know."
That was around a month ago.
Within that month, the two males spent time fooling around behind Y/n's back. Always giving lingering looks, small touches of affection, and even makeout sessions when Y/n is sleeping.
Nick knew it was wrong to be going behind Y/n's back like this, especially because they made a deal with each other.
"No dating each other's family members."
But, he couldn't help it. He could never get Florence out of his head. He always found him attractive, from the first day he met him. He knew he had a crush on the boy, but he never wanted to break the pact he made. Unfortunately, his best friend's brother was the one for him.
Here they are today, currently making out in Florence's room. Y/n had to go get groceries, so she told Nick to just wait for her to come back. The two took the chance, both knowing how long the girl could take in getting groceries.
Little did they know, the store had nothing the girl needed.
"Hey Flo have you seen-" the two jump apart hearing the girl's voice in the room. They look to the door and see her staring with wide eyes.
"Y/n..."
She quickly walks away, Nick jumping up and following her. "Y/n wait! Let me explain!"
"How long Nick?" She turns abruptly and crosses her arms. Nick hates being on the receiving end of the dirty look she's giving. he's so used to giving the look with her to other people.
"A month..." he confesses softly.
"A MON-" she stops herself from yelling and takes a deep breath. "You have been going behind my back, making out with my brother for a month straight? Nick we made a pact!"
"I know! I know, but Y/n just hear me out!"
She shakes her head, being stubborn about the situation. "No! I don't want to hear anything! You broke a promise! How would you feel if I slept with Matt or Chris?!"
" Ok well Florence and I have never slept with eachother-GOOD-" Nick gives her a look. " -But honestly, I might be grossed out at the thought but I wouldn't be mad about it...especially if you were happy," he answers honestly. He didn't want Y/n to be mad at him, he would honestly cry if the girl suddenly decided to stop being his best friend.
She stares at Nick, still pissed off but she doesn't have her defensive stance anymore. "Why my brother? My twin!"
"I developed a small crush on him when we first met... I know you don't get it Y/n but you would know what I mean if you weren't related."
Y/n scrunches her face up at the thought, "ew no! Nick shut up that's my brother! He's not even cute! He's ugly."
Florence rounds the corner, his shirt now on much to Nick's dismay. "We are literally twins Y/n. If I'm ugly that means you're ugly."
"No you're ugly, I'm cute as fuck... And shut your mouth! At the moment I don't like you!" Florence rolls his eyes and walks over to Y/n, pulling her into a hug, "Awww come on. You can't be mad at me. I'm your favorite brother! And I really do like Nick."
"You're my only brother dumb ass-" she hugs him back, relaxing in his hold. "- And I guess this is ok... I just don't like the fact you guys hid this from me."
Nick frowns at her words, " I know and I'm sorry... I love you." She smiles at Nick and pulls him into the hug. The three stand there, embracing each other with smiles on their faces.
"Alright let's lay down rules! No kissing in front of me, I might die, and no hogging Nick! He was my friend first, so you only get him on weekends and maybe when I'm sleeping!" Florence chuckles and kisses Nick's cheek.
Y/n punches Florence's arm making him wince, "What did I just say?!" She rolls her eyes and turns to Nick with a smirk on her face.
"And since you're dating my brother, that means I can stop turning Matt down!" Nick gives her a look but agrees anyway. "fine, that's only fair but the same rules apply!" He turns to Florence only to whip back to Y/n, "Wait! Matt has been flirting with you and asking you out?!"
She giggles and skips away to her room, "You two go back to making out, I'm going to text Matt and plan a date." With that her door closes and the two boys are left together.
" Want to go back to my room or should we piss her off and make out on the couch?" Nick laughs and pulls Florence towards the couch.
"This is payback for her not telling me about Matt."

The one thing that everyone seems to know about Eddie Munson is that when he's not out touring the world with his band, Corroded Coffin, he makes a point to be as invisible as possible in order to spend time at home with his family. Eddie, along with his wife Chrissy of seven years and their two young children, graciously invited Vogue into their Hollywood Hills home that's about as secluded as you can get while still having that coveted Los Angeles zip code.
Vogue: I have to admit, given what I've seen of Corroded Coffin on stage, I think I expected your home to reflect a bit more of that personality.
Eddie Munson: [laughs] You can thank Chrissy for that. She's the brains behind this whole operation, I just do what she tells me.
So there's no hidden dungeon in the basement?
Hate to burst your bubble, but nope. I've been trying to get a sacrificial altar for the backyard, but I haven't found one I liked yet.
Really?
[laughs] I'm kidding. But I had you going, right?
You really did. But that's what you've always done, right? Leaned into the mania of Satanic Panic and made it work for you?
Yeah, I guess so. I mean, people are gonna believe whatever they wanna believe anyway so I might as well give 'em what they want, right? Plus, [laughs] it's a hell of a lot of fun.
What's it like having that devil-worshipper stage persona with two young kids at home? Do either of your kids know what their dad does for a living?
Oh, yeah. They [redacted] love it. Wait, can I say [redacted]?

[Redacted] yeah. Our little one doesn't really get the whole stage thing yet, but she sure looks cute in those big-ass headphones.
And your other daughter?
Oh, if she could be on stage with me every night, she would be. On our last tour, we had this gimmick where Gareth rigged a bunch of blood packs to his drums to explode during the encore and she thought it was the coolest [redacted] thing in the world. He even offered to let her do it when we were in rehearsals!
And did she?
Maybe.
From the look on your face, I'm guessing she did.
[laughs] Don't tell Chrissy.

I'm not surprised. Just from the last five minutes, I can see how much she adores you and I can't imagine what it's like to leave that behind, even when it's to go on a worldwide tour.
It's tough. I love my job, don't get me wrong. It's what's given us this house, all the [redacted] that the girls need, anything they could ever want, but… [shrugs] I dunno. Sometimes giving it all up doesn't sound half as hard as leaving them is. Maybe that's just me being ungrateful.
I don't think so. I think it means you're human. Stuck between a rock and a hard place, you know? Torn between two worlds.
[laughs] Now there's an idea for an album. The dichotomy of being a rockstar and a father.
I'd listen to it.

Wow! You said you were moving over a hundred controls for each eye for Pavitr, is that standard for a feature rig, or on the more complex side? The closest idea I had of what a production quality rig might be is Ray from CGTarian, which is described as "almost equal" in quality and functionality, but now I feel like the gap in complexity is way farther than I'd imagined 😅 Are there any specific things you feel separate production/feature quality rigs from rigs students might be using, or even anything about the rigs on spiderverse that you hadn't seen before on other projects? Thank you for taking the time to answer people's questions, it's always so cool to learn more about the production!
it really differs from studio to studio! sony is the only feature studio i've worked at and all of their rigs tend to be set up in the same way. there are lots of levels of controls on the face that isn't something i had ever worked with before when i was in tv. i worked in tv animation for 8 years before sony at lots of different studios, and all of the rigs there tended to be a lot simpler and more limited. that can be a good thing though because tv schedules are too tight to adjust tons of tiny controls frame by frame haha
for the mask eyes specifically, that many controls was needed in order to get the most accurately designed shapes! because they're so expressive with their mask eyes, we needed a lot of control. if these were student or tv rigs, they'd likely be a lot more simplified
usually you don't need those smaller controls as much for more rounded and soft looking cg movies but it was super important for spiderverse in order to get the characters on model because they couldn't be modelled this way, so we had to pose them in anim

on the left is what miles's default eye looked like; very almond shaped with rounded lids. on the right is how we posed it, with straighter lines and sharper corners, which the smaller "per edge" controls allowed us to do. we also placed the eye spec (the small white dot) and the limbal ring (the line that goes around the iris), along with all the expression lines! expression lines are extra geo with small rigs that we could add to the faces

the lines on the forehead, between the brows, and around the eyes were all lines that we added in anim. the ones around the nose, lips and chin were done by fx!

I can't remember if you have posts about your picture taking process but I'm really curious how did you get a lot like Prosper Room so crowded and look so lively. Do you pose everyone or do you just get them there and leave them be?
I would love it, if you have time and motivation of course, if you showed us your process for setting a scene and taking pics. I never did those in any sims game tbh and I always love seeing behind the scenes things.

I don't think I have made any posts about my picture-making process because prior to today I don't think anybody has ever asked! But I really appreciate you sending me this ask and your lovely comments. Thank you so much!
For these particular scenes I have 16 Sims in the active family. (I did originally have 20 as stated here but my game kept freezing.) For anyone reading who may be unfamiliar with this process, I add the Sims to the household by clicking on my active Sim and then selecting NRaas>Master controller>Household> Add Sim. I then filter by age and gender so I have a decent cross section of Sims, and enable testing cheats so I can teleport each Sim to the active lot, in this case the Prosper Room. I have a decent gaming rig and can usually add 20 Sims to a lot before my game starts to protest, but as mentioned in an earlier post I had to reduce the number of household Sims in this case to 16, I suspect because the Prosper Room already contains a number of service Sims.
Once all the Sims have been teleported to the lot, I then set about dressing them. This can be a laborious process but I usually have a couple of Sims in the household who have a dozen outfits in their inventories for this very purpose. It is then a simple process using Nraas to transfer one of those outfits to another Sim in the household. I click on my active Sim and then choose NRaas>Master controller>Intermediate>Transfer clothing. A box will then appear as shown below asking for details of the 'Destination Sim' and I then choose 'current lot.'
A list of Sims will then appear of the same age and gender and I just choose the one I want to transfer the outfit to. You can also choose them all if you want!
Now, for my current Prosper Room scenes, I placed meals on all the tables using Nraas Debug enabler: Nraas> Debug enabler>Options sim> make food. (Again, quite a laborious process, because I like there to be a good variety of dishes!) I then instructed the majority of my Sims to sit at the tables and start eating the meals placed in front of them, as seen in the below pic.

Once they have finished eating, I can make them stay in their seats by having them converse with each other (which is probably the best way of making the scene 'lively') or by using Nraas animator: Nraas>Animator> Animation by category> Play Specific Idle>Seated Idles>a_chairdining_idle sigh_x. The wonderful thing about using Animator is that you can direct Sims where to look, too. (I know you can do that using pose player add-ons if you choose to pose your Sims instead, but if you use Animator the Sims continue looking until you cancel the animation).
I tried to illustrate my answer by using more screenshots but I kept getting warnings that I'd exceeded my character limit, so if anyone reading this needs more clarification of my process please don't hesitate to ask! Thanks again for the wonderful question @oasislandingresident!

Earlier, I made some broad predictions for Walpurgis no Kaiten, but now it's time for a few more granular ones. One of the great things about PMMM thus far is its use of repetition, which allows for some pretty obvious guesses about what's to come:
An unknown amount of time has passed between Rebellion and WnK; the story opens in media res at the moment before the current system is irrevocably changed. Thus we will not fully understand the world Homura has created until it's about to disappear; however, the seeds of its destruction were present from the beginning, as will eventually be made clear.
The original series opens with a cryptic and as-yet-unexplained prologue, followed by a battle scene that segues into Madoka waking up and going about her morning routine before heading to school. Rebellion follows the same pattern, with a cryptic explanatory monologue from Homura, the first Nightmare battle, and an almost shot-for-shot remake of Madoka's morning routine.
Thus, I think it's reasonable to assume that WnK will do the same; my guess is that we'll have a cryptic Homura scene that may or may not explain what has come before and which will probably hit differently in hindsight, followed by a battle sequence (my guess is Mami, Kyouko, and Sayaka getting their asses kicked when the wraiths start going haywire and/or something with the mysterious hybrid magical girl) followed by Madoka waking up and going about her morning (but animated in the new style and with a few key differences to mark that things are the Same Yet Also Different).
It's unclear to me whether Madoka is in this "dream" or not because I'm not sure what her role is/if she's a magical girl at this point. Based on the previous two installments, the answer is "yes", but we'll see.
Likewise, there will be a Thematically Relevant Conversation between Madoka and Junko in the bathroom while they're brushing their teeth. Would be hilarious if it involved mirrors or reflections (literal or metaphorical) in any way; ditto for teamwork and cooperation, since I suspect they will be major themes in this installment. Also phones and communication.
Is Kyubey initially around? Again, TBD. Could go either way, depending on his circumstances now. My guess is no, though it would be funny to see him watching in the background.
Madoka leaves the house, meets up with Sayaka and Hitomi, as per usual. (You can see in the trailer that Sayaka has bandages around her neck in this scene, which is one reason why I think she's in Madoka's "dream"/fight sequence as described above.) Some playful & thematically relevant banter ensues. The three of them then encounter parasol!Homura as seen in the trailer.
I think the big mystery for the first 20-40 minutes is "What is going on with Homura??" There will be a number of scenes with her where she looks/acts different, and something is clearly off, but it is not immediately clear what it is or even that there are two of them at first, because only one Homura visible in any given shot. This will eventually change, of course, and the reveal where they appear together will be very dramatic and artsy, but until then, I expect SHAFT to milk the confusion and the ominous dread for all it's worth
There will also be a Thematically Relevant Saotome rant once Madoka et al. get to class, of course.
Nakazawa gets one (1) line.
the OTHER established pattern is that there's always a new transfer student on the Day Everything Changes, which raises the FASCINATING question of whether parasol!Homura is just going to roll up and start attending classes now, too. If that's the case, will the "real" Homura be present for this (doubtful, given my speculations above) or is she missing/absent? It would be so funny if WnK pulled a Rebellion and had the "real" Homura in a coma for half of the movie, but somehow I don't think that's where this is going. How does parasol!Homura explain herself? Is she here in addition to Homura (i.e., as a student in her own right) or to take Homura's place entirely? What does Madoka think??
(to be clear: there's no question in my mind that the movie's plot kicks off with the arrival of the doppelganger here, the only question is how they choose to play it. In technical terms, this is the story's "inciting incident", and, in keeping with the established pattern, it's Homura--a Homura, anyway--entering Madoka's world yet again.)
Those are my guesses for the first part of the movie, based on previous structure and established patterns. It's possible the creators might switch it up, but I feel reasonably confident WnK will continue with them, at least at first, if only to lull us into a false sense of security before dropping the ground out from under us. In both the TV series and the movie, this section I've just described is approximately 10 minutes long, which still leaves plenty of time for surprises.
After that point, it gets a little murkier because I'm missing so many pieces, and there's no guarantee WnK will follow the same structure as Rebellion beyond those required by their shared two-hour movie format. That said, here are few things I expect to see at some point:
Mami, Kyouko, and Sayaka reconvene, but they are losing their powers--probably to the hybrid magical girl, who appears to be using Mami's ribbons. Sayaka is missing her healing powers, which is why she's all bandaged in the trailer. Kyouko is probably also missing powers, which is why she looks so pissed. If WnK follows the same beats as Rebellion, this will be at about the same point as the second Nightmare fight, otherwise who knows. The point is that the world is breaking down and nothing is "normal" anymore.
Meanwhile, Homura is being haunted/taunted by her double, who is actively interfering with her and her system. I would like a jaw-dropping reality-bending fight sequence between them a la "Absolute Configuration", but we'll see if I get my wish.
I expect the double to have a lengthy monologue explaining what is going on, though in classic PMMM fashion, this will raise as many questions as it answers. (This could also be Kyubey's job, but tbh I'd rather have the double do it.) But there's no question that there were unintended consequences to Homura's actions in Rebellion and someone has to explain them to the audience.
One transformation sequence for each of the main cast, though one or two might have multiple ones.
By the end of the film, the universe is rewritten again and a new system is made. If we're lucky, this will be the happy Final Ending in which Madoka and Homura are reunited forever; if we're unlucky, it will be Rebellion Cliffhanger Hell all over again, only worse.
But, having established patterns, it's also possible to break them. I don't necessarily expect this for a lot of the big picture/structural stuff, but I can see it happening in a few places, like:
Sayaka tries to spray Homura (original or double) with a fire extinguisher, but it backfires somehow--either exploding in her face, or she hits the other one by mistake. Alternately, she does it and it SEEMS like it worked, only for Homura to loom up unexpectedly out of nowhere and gloat.
Also, this is not a structural thing, per se, but based on Rebellion, I expect there will be 2-3 major twists of ratcheting intensity, at least one of which will make a large percentage of the fandom incredibly angry, but for dramatically different reasons: one camp will claim that it "came out of nowhere" and/or "ruins Homura's character", and the other will argue that it was "too predictable" and "contrived" and therefore bad. Eventually, everyone will calm down and grudgingly accept it the way they've done with Rebellion (if only because the people who hate it the most leave the fandom, or if it's truly the end of the series).
As for me, I feel very agnostic about the whole business--while I certainly have no end of guesses about what is likely and the things I would like to see (two separate but related circles), and it would be very satisfying to be right, I'm not wedded to the idea of canon as this absolute monolith that determines whether something is interesting or not. If I hate WnK (doubtful), I'll write fanfic about it; if I love WnK, I'll write fanfic about it. No matter what happens, fanfic will be written and I will shape the established narrative as needed to suit my needs--I engage in this speculation before the fact primarily because it's fun and a useful exercise for a writer.

you guys don't really keep track of points or whose winning, it's more about the playful banter and impressing one another with your obscure knowledge.
sometimes, (most of the time,) when one of you pulls a random fact out of your ass to answer a question and get it right, the other will be so impressed that the rest of jeopardy will be spent making out and groping each other on the couch, occasionally pausing to whisper out answers against each other's lips when you overhear a question one of you knows.

News Literacy 101
So after seeing this (great) post and the reactions to it, it's come to my attention that many people on this site weren't taught basic news literacy—and that is NOT your fault. I don't know about other countries, but I do know it's not something we teach widely in the States. Frankly, the people in charge of our education have a vested interest in us being gullible. But that's a whole other post, I guess.
The point is... While I don't want to derail OP's post, I do want to talk about news literacy, how to spot trustworthy information, and why sharing doom-filled posts isn't as helpful as you might think. So, I want to give you a quick question to ask yourself:
Does it pass the SMELL Test?
Source: Where is the information coming from? Is it from a credible and reliable source, like a reputable news provider*?
Motives: Why is this information being presented the way it is? Are they trying to inform or persuade you? Do they use emotionally-charged words designed to outrage, shame, guilt, or scare you?
Evidence: How has the information been verified? Has it been verified? Can it be verified? Do they provide links to credible sources?
Logic: Does the information make logical sense? Look for over-generalizations, flawed comparisons (especially correlation vs causation), and over-the-top accusations.
Left Out: What have they left out? Information left out could change the context. Do you have more questions than answers?
* This gets complicated when we're talking about Palestine due to the fact that mainstream media is spreading Israeli propaganda, but there are MANY journalists on the ground and civilians sharing their experiences—this is a time where social media can actually help spread truth. Prioritize posts from these sources (or that at least link to these sources), rather than unverified text posts... especially if those text posts have no calls to action or resources.
Beware of Manipulation
Some posts are designed to manipulate feelings for likes, shares, or to spread misinformation. They also might fall into performative activism, where someone uses a social platform to shame, scold, or scare others while taking no real action to make change.
While it might feel like sharing these posts raises awareness, it often ends up spreading feelings of despair, which can discourage meaningful action. It even makes people more susceptible to conspiracy theories and misinformation.
Young people are once again talking about not voting because "there's no point," "the system is rigged," etc. after doom posts about the 2024 Republican platform started going around on this site. People are catastrophizing about AI, derailing realistic conversations instead of encouraging people to take action by demanding regulation. People are scrolling and sharing emotionally-charged posts about Palestine, then not participating in boycotts or emailing their representatives, or taking other meaningful actions.
TLDR; if a post doesn't have a reliable, verifiable source, has a scolding or hopeless message, makes sweeping accusations or generalizations, and/or has no suggestions for action, think twice before reblogging it. It may do more harm than good.

A Rich Girl with Issues
The burring and steady beep of machines was all Lena needed to hear to know she was in a hospital room. The sound was so unmistakable, so recognizable that it bordered on affectation. She was alive. The comfort that realization brought was shockingly fleeting. Southisde, she thought as her memories began to return. Did she succeed? Maybe the better question was whether or not she had been allowed to succeed? She had been stuck playing a rigged game, after all. If it had all been for nothing… Not nothing, a voice reminded her. If nothing else, she had saved Kara. She tried to smile and managed a feeble tightening in her dry lips. She was marginally more successful in opening her eyes. They fluttered open ever so slightly out of sync with one another and found their synchronicity after a few weak blinks. Each time, the room came into sharper focus. Not that there was much to see once the room no longer looked as if she were peering at it through a window smeared with vaseline. The walls were painted a shade of blue that was likely chosen because it was purported to be soothing for anyone unlucky enough to have to stay here. A curtain was drawn over a large window letting in an oblong slat of moonlight that splashed over a small table in the corner crammed full with flowers, cards and mylar balloons which were beginning to lose some of their joie de vivre, sagging listlessly above the table. It made Lena wonder how long she had been asleep.
MCU Crossover
“You clearly know your way around a lab.” It was the third time that Tony had made a stab at conversation in the past hour and with each attempt it was harder for Lena to find a way to rebuff him without possibly ruffling his feathers.  "No more than most," Lena said, hoping he would take her clipped response as modesty rather than the brush off that it was.  "I knew Coulson wasn't sending his best," he joked. “Of course, I didn’t even know he was alive until very recently…” "That would be Jemma," Lena replied, squinting a little as she double-checked her calculations, her eyes starting to itch from the strain. "Afraid you're stuck with me."  "You don't like me very much, do you?" He asked after a brief silence where the only sounds in the lab were that of keys being pressed and the hum of the arc reactor that Lena was tinkering with.  Lena let out a sigh that she didn't try very hard to hide. "When people ask that question they usually already know the answer,” she said, not bothering to look up from her work. “I don’t even know you.”
A Hero
There was a parade of people (some familiar, some not) that spoke on Lena's behalf. One of them read a poem, while others reminisced about all the times that Lena had helped save the world. Stories of her bravery and her determination that Kara supposed were meant to celebrate her life, to honor her. But no stories of Lena off duty. Not one of how competitive she could get playing board games, or how bright her smile could truly be, nothing like the canned smiles she sometimes gave  in interviews but one that could light up a room, could warm one's heart with its brilliance. Not one word about how funny she was or how wonderful it was to simply be near her. 
They don't know her at all…
The anger she felt at that realization was frightening in its enormity. The only thing keeping it from consuming her was the grief that had already eaten away at her like a cancer, already feeling like it had devoured everything good inside her. 
It was Kal striding to the front of the room, head bowed and shoulders sagging that stoked the flames of her anger, listening to him speak about Lena, speaking in such vague terms one might think he was trying to pay his respects to a stranger. And that's what she was to him. It was what she was to everyone here. None of them had truly known her when she was alive. Everyone except her. Because of her. She was the reason that Lena had not just re-erected the walls around her heart that Kara had torn down but to make them stronger still. To keep them closed so tightly that no one had ever been allowed in… 
You don't know her, Kara thought, fighting the urge to seize Kal by the shoulders and to shake him. To seize him by the shoulders and scream it in his face. To turn to all the people gathered and yell at them. Anything to rid herself of even an ounce of the pain in her chest that felt so much like a mortal wound.

Don’t know why these lines intrigue me, however I’ve kinda stated before how I find the comparisons between these two interesting. I don’t believe they are perfect mirrors but there are some similarities to look at, alongside their major differences as well. Cecilia uses her fathers name to benefit herself, she takes advantage of it and others to get what she wants. She is aware that what she is doing is wrong and if found out, would tarnish the Pederson name. Whereas if we turn to Amanda, she heavily dedicates herself to continuing John's work and the Jigsaw legacy. However, obviously throughout the Saw franchise, she begins to question his methods and goes against them. One takes advantage, the other is taken advantage of.
“I rob, I steal and I cheat.” - Cecilia
“I’m a murderer. He took my life from me, so I just returned the fucking favour.” - Amanda

They both admit what they're doing isn't correct to a degree. However, neither has or likely will stop what they're doing. Cecilia scams and Amanda rigs her traps to be impossible, in a way her own form of scamming? What I mean by that is, the whole point of the traps is to be a lesson- It's supposed to be escapable, any survivor of it will tell you that... Obviously, there are some places to question the tests/traps even outside of Amanda, but we're not looking at that right now. Anyway! She basically scams people out of a chance of surviving due to her own past experiences. Lynn Denlon in Saw 3 being a perfect example of this really? She died due to the shotgun collar going off yes, but she likely would have anyway due to Amanda shooting her- Which Lynn had already PASSED her test by that point really.

(Honorary Angel Trap mention) I don't think I have to go too in depth about how Cecilia scams people, but she doesn't just take their money. She also in her own way takes their lives- They leave thinking the treatment will help them, spending savings and such when really it's fake. We’ve also got the fact that Cecilia outright murdered Gabriela. This comparison of their characters and the reception to them by the fandom/audience is something I find fun! Yes, people dislike Cecilia for being a scammer, but the main cause of people's hatred that I've seen isn't even what she did to John? At least here on Tumblr, it's the fact that she killed Gabriela.... The reason I find this ''fun'' is because well, Amanda was the one who put Gabriela in that scenario in the first place and yes of course- We have to acknowledge that Gabriela was part of the scamming which is why she was tested alongside her being a drug addict, however at the end of the day I think it's agreed upon that base level, she isn't a terrible person. She did what she did to survive. So I wonder, if Gabriela had just died in her trap, whether there would be uproar about her death? Would people be angry at John and Amanda the same way they are at Cecilia? And to answer my own question, I don't actually think so. I believe this because of the circumstances of death, reactions and the reason why. Cecilia didn't just kill Gabriela whilst she was in her trap, she did it afterwards. She effectively stole her ''second chance'' because of how money hungry she was. Cecilia also showed no remorse for doing such. Then we have Amanda's reaction.

It goes without saying she was likely rooting for Gabriela the entire time, she reminds Amanda of herself for one and she's also distraught because Gabriela did WIN. I see this as a catalyst to Amanda's future behaviour alongside deaths such as when she ''mercy'' killed Adam and then Laura from Saw 2.

I'm also going to drop this link to a previous post I made, which I think fits in to what I'm saying here and possibly adds to other points. (I have a tendency to repeat myself or ramble)
Almost nobody in the Saw franchise is either fully ''good'' or ''bad.'' That's what I like about it, they are people with faults- Some characters have more redeeming qualities/traits, others not so much. The most beloved characters are likely the Jigsaw apprentices (And Adam). At least the MAIN three ones. Which, let's go over their crimes!

Fun fact! These kinds of crimes are the type that would land you in PRISON. It goes without saying that the moral compasses of all 3 of these characters are basically broken or spinning constantly. Yet, as I stated before- Amanda, Mark and Lawrence are some of the fan favourites of the Saw franchise.... And don't get me wrong, I'm an Amanda fan myself for example! However, it's so interesting the reception these guys get compared to other characters in media and generally in the Saw universe. If we go black and white/narrow our views, they are actually the villains at some points. The crimes speak for themselves and generally whilst watching the movies, you're supposed to be rooting for the people to get out of their traps- Not always mind you, but a good percentage of the time. So many people justify their actions due to their backstories, a common thing for villains and or ''bad guys''. It's understandable, because the shit all of them have gone through would definitely leave anybody unhinged... At the end of the day though, that doesn't mean they should be excused. I think I'll end this here because I've gotten so sidetracked? As I always say at the end of something like this, these are all just my thoughts and opinions- Not fact or concrete either, I'm open to discussions with people who disagree with me for example! Hey everyone!  I hope you've had a great time participating in NaNoRenO this year!  I'm Nai from Make Visual Novels, though I imagine more of you know me either through our live team building events in DevTalk, or from the other jams and competitions I run.  I wanted to let you guys know that, for a limited time, I'm offering free consultations for jammers participating in NaNoRenO2024.  With those consultations, I'll also be creating VFX for your title screens to help you make a stronger first impression.

I run & judge for the largest sponsored visual novel development competition.  That 500 was a conservative estimate.

Having a list of questions to ask is a good idea.  Having goals is an even better one.  If you don't have goals, we can work on setting them.

Don't ask me to roast your game/be brutal.  I don't do that.  I can provide critique with suggestions and examples.

I'll never get enough of the AUs where Murtagh in some way, at some point ends up in Carvahall instead of Uru'baen. There are so many potential variations of how he gets there and who he stays with and even the little differences have some really fun effects. I'm especially intrigued by the idea of Murtagh growing up there while still clearly remembering Morzan and his dragon and where he came from. I think it makes for an interesting counterpoint to canon where Murtagh can't escape his past and his father's legacy because that's what everyone sees in him. Instead, in Carvahall, his past becomes such a dangerous taboo that it can't even be acknowledged, much less focused on. Rather than his past restricting him in its grasp, it keeps sliding out of his own grasp, defying all his efforts to understand what it means for him and what everyone else might feel about it. Black and blue eyes and gleaming red scales haunt his dreams, but he has to swallow those memories down every time.
Assuming Murtagh grows up with Garrow and Marian, when he first arrives with all his fear, he's determined to never breath a word about any of that. But he gets older and starts to second guess that resolve- Eragon aches to know who his father is and Murtagh hates lying to him. He deserves to eventually know the truth (what Murtagh thinks is true, that is), even if it's painful. And it gnaws at Murtagh's own heart to wonder if his family would accept him if they knew, or if the only thing perpetuating his acceptance is their ignorance. At night, he tosses and turns wondering if he's turning out just like his father, a question he can never answer because he has no reference of Morzan beyond his own dim, scattered memories.
One of my favorite AUs like this that exist inside my brain follows that track and actually stays very close to canon. Murtagh grows up alongside Eragon, and plans to tell him about his past when he turns 16, but before that, the Ra'zac arrive and he's tortured as well as Garrow. He pulls through only to discover Eragon vanished with Brom and he goes to track them down, eventually saving them when they're the ones at the Ra'zac's mercy. Then when he's kidnapped and enslaved, there's so much more heartbreak and guilt because he's pitted against everyone he grew up with and cares for. And maybe Brom gets to live so there can be a reckoning when Murtagh does tell Eragon what he believes about their parentage, following him as he struggles for the courage to face his son and tries to find any way to help his step son, before it's all too late.
For something that goes quite differently, I've been thinking through an AU where both Selena and Morzan live. Selena fakes Murtagh's death to disguise her stealing him away and she and Brom raise him and Eragon in Carvahall. They love and protect them fiercely and the boys grow up safe and happy, but whenever Murtagh tries to ask about the things that happened before, they swiftly shut him down and dissuade him from ever mentioning it out of their own fear of the past. It leaves him feeling out of place and fragmentary. And that comes at a cost when Morzan appears, under orders to search for the egg. Murtagh has to hurriedly figure out what he was never able to, now with so much danger hanging in the balance, because no matter how Morzan could want to treat him, that might not matter against the king's orders. And Selena and Brom have to confront their own snarled relationships with Morzan that were never truly laid to rest. (It also caters to my desire to jerry rig the three of them into a very messy and emotionally charged polycule.)
In that one, I build something more redeemable into Morzan's character (soon I definitely plan to elaborate on why I find that a fascinating angle to take with him). I don't know if anyone would want it, but I wrote a drabble for that AU when Murtagh first sees Morzan again, and I could brush it up and post it. [EDIT: here's the fic] I just love the idea of small town farm boy Murtagh who's peaceful and amiable and also just a little bit off. Like maybe sending the guy who dreams each night about blood red swords and dragon's snapping fangs to go plow fields won't last forever.
