More On If Mandroid Got Transported to Griffin Rock
The flood gates have opened. I'm seriously considering making this an actual fic. Some more highlights:
-ES timeline wise, Mandroid would get transported to Griffin Rock after the events of Age of Evolution, but before Home.
-The Burns family learns of Mandroid's existence via a phone call from Mrs. Neederlander complaining about "A suspicious man with a giant metal arm roaming around my house. He's scaring Mister Pettypaws!"
-Mandroid assumes he's been transported somewhere on his Earth. He'll start thinking something is amiss when he meets the Burns family and realizes that the general population has no idea about Transformers.
-Of course he starts asking questions and everyone thinks he's nuts. Cody is the one to suggest the idea of Mandroid possibly being from a different timeline. Doc Greene goes a step further and theorizes about Mandroid being from a different universe.
-Cody would be all "Noble!" about Mandroid having a Transformer arm until he finds out how Mandroid got it.
-Despite no one having any knowledge of the Mandroid nickname, it'd be either Kade or Blades that would come up with the name. Mandroid is of course pissed that the name followed him to a different dimension.
Morocco and Madeline Pynch would be mind blown that Mandroid has no interest in making money from his tech. Morocco especially. Both villains would want to team up with Mandroid but he'll be, "If I don't get to destroy Cybertronians I'm not interested."

Let's talk about Fast Forward for a bit.
Specifically I want to talk about the main theme of that season: why? Why did the art style deteriorate so much? Why did the writing get so bad? Why did this come out before season 5 but also supposedly happens after season 5 and at the same time only occasionally acknowledges its events? Why is there a kid now? Why am I watching this when I only really care about maybe three episodes at best?
Because I was bored. But let's go with order.
I'm going to say it now, I'm still going to claim there is no season 6 in Ba Sing Se. But at the same time, it isn't all that bad actually?
Here's the thing. FF was inevitable for many reasons. TMNT, with its aliens and magic, has the potential to go on forever. However, at some point "turtle fatigue" will set in. In the 80s, this happened around season 7 which yeah, it's about 150 episodes in. For the 2003 show it happens around season 5 but this doesn't mean the higher-ups will try stupid changes to bring back the old glory.
Moreover, the show brought it upon itself. The main culprits, so to speak, are the writing's insistence on portraying consequences as much as possible (see: Leo's scarred shell for instance), as well as season 4 with its funny gory shift (see: that one episode where Baxter watches his own body fall apart which wow).
So it isn't unexpected that the higher-ups and especially the toy maker went "Kids, could you lighten up a little?" and messed up everything that was good about the show.
So this is basically why I don’t like FF. Five seasons are a long commitment. You have to sit through the ninja tribunal arc which is boring as hell, then have to be really patient and accept that there are just dragons now for some reason. Then FF comes up and it has nothing of what you previously enjoyed. The style is different, too flat and kinda clunky and ugly in some spots, nothing that happened before matters and now Cody is there.
Remember networks, kids don't want to watch other kids go on adventures in their place and it doesn't get better with age. But you do you.
So I despised FF but after rewatching the season on its own, I have to make amends in some spots.
The general impression when you watch FF on its own, without the better stuff still fresh in mind and with something to do during the dull parts, is that of good background noise.
It takes many steps backwards. The turtles are suddenly less competent at fighting where it's convenient, their personalities are more one dimensional depending on the plot and they're kinda shitty to each other for no reason. They really suffer from that serial effect where the reset button is hit as soon as the credits roll. They used to go out to murder the Shredder knowing they might die and now it's "Today Mikey really wants a new video game and next episode we're going to a fancy party with the kid dressed in the dumbest suits ever and a silly happens :)"
Splinter also gets sidetracked a lot and he's more there to occasionally call the turtles whippersnappers but again, there isn't much of a reason for him to step in anymore.
And this brings me to the villains. I feel like the turtles only work as well as their villains. They work when they're getting into a fight with a local street gang, or trying to kick an alien empire out of the planet before everyone dies. They work when the Shredder actually does something meaningful and generally speaking are going against someone actually dangerous.
The first five seasons had Shredder, the Foot, Hun, the Triceratons and Bishop. FF has an annoying wrestler whose main priority is property damage, a gang of netrunners who I wish got up to more interesting things than scalping and quoting the Matrix, literal evil twins from the tv trope literal evil twins, and the idiots in charge.
The idiots in charge are of course beloved uncle Darius and Sh'Okanabo.
These two really are something. Darius is essentially that guy from the first Iron Man movie. He's the acting CEO because the owner is a literal child. He smiles and preaches big keeping up the facade of benevolent company of the shiny Earth utopia but he has a dark secret which is that he's making guns and a mecha suit for himself and Cody takes several episodes to realize this for some reason.
You'd think Darius would stop being a threat the moment his dark deeds are uncovered since his whole thing is "evil capitalist guy is evil". But no, he's gonna go higher, he's going to ally with Shittibobo because he needs new genetically modified minions he can badmouth while fucking around all day in his sewers loft and we don't even get the payoff of Darius realizing that he's being fucked over by an alien during the Day of Awakening.
Plus because of how afraid FF is to explore anything heavier than Mikey insisting they go out to achieve explosive diarrhea from questionable junk food, even the fact that Darius is an abusive father figure for Cody has no real importance because Cody is only allowed to look sad on screen for five seconds. Remove Darius and the overall season arc remains the same.
What about the other guy? Well, Sushibooboo is the supposed big bad of the season. He's an alien who wants to kill life on Earth to steal resources. He's something beloved President Bishop goes out of his way to personally murder. But the only thing he achieves is to confirm that he's just offensively stupid.
Sh'Okanabo is supposedly an alien boogeyman who's so evil he just can't be real, right? Unfortunately, he's the literal cause of his own demise.
Since the turtles are more than content with babysitting Cody and going around complaining about historical accuracies like that one Futurama episode, they don't know who Sh'Okanabo is and after talking to Bishop they don't care to find out. Great. This means he can operate in the dark, grow his eggs and prepare to kill everyone, right? No way. In pure Sasalele style, he goes out of his way to attack the turtles, tell them what he’s up to and scare them enough to start to actively prepare to fight him.
And on top of that he wastes time to build a time machine because somehow Shredder had to return for one episode which in turn almost fucks up his plan entirely since his ship almost explodes.
So I still don't like FF because of the way the writing plummeted. A lot of stuff happens because it's convenient and often falls back into exquisitely 90s/2000s tropes (see: the obviously evil guy gets away with evil deeds because the parents/cops/people with power are blind and children are stupid, that one car race episode which is a repeat of the previous car race episode from earlier in the show, a female character who's only there to be a love interest and is allowed to be smart and cute because Cody likes them smart and cute, just to name a few). The turtles get dumber depending on the episode and there are some attempts at comedy like Starlee's shitty family that give out levels of second hand embarrassment not seen since Star Trek TNG.
But I don't hate this season entirely either. FF is just very mid and it makes me think that it could have worked as a standalone show for a while because you can watch it more or less. I'm just this isn't what we got in place of the actual show because it wouldn’t have lasted.
Still I did enjoy some things:
Torbin Zixx is fun. He has some interesting tricks, even though 60% of them only work because the turtles are written especially stupid in his episodes. Plus he steals Bishop's space shuttle which is glorious
I ended up liking Sterling a little towards the end. I still feel like his humor is a sanitized version of Baxter's but I like that he collects clips of the turtles getting hurt to watch to calm down and that he's actually always ready to throw hands
President Bishop is so stupid, yet brilliant (and I'm going to talk about him in a separate post because the worldbuilding is really something and I have OPINIONS)
Raph commenting that power armors are so last season while fighting Darius made me chuckle even though I won't tolerate this supersuit slander

TBB alternate story ideas from local rando who didn't watch the whole show
Anyone who knows me knows I don't like TBB and I generally avoid conversations about the show because I don't want to be negative about things other people like. But after talking with some folks—some who love the show and some who share my opinions—last week, I thought of a few basic changes to the character concepts that could have made the show much more palatable to me and probably a lot of other people who have similar complaints about it.
I'm not going to get into those criticisms here because I'm not aiming to bash the show; I'm trying to present a sort of redo and maybe someone will like the idea and run with it.
One of the main reasons why I was so very disappointed in the show was because it was kind of a bait and switch—Disney said they were giving us a show about clones, when TBB (going forward, I'll mostly be using this to refer to Hunter, Tech, Wrecker, and Crosshair; not Echo or Omega), as presented in the story, are arguably not clones at all. Think about it: TBB dislike and disrespect 'regs' (with the seeming exception of Cody), they don't spend time around other clones, they don't act like them, and they certainly don't look like them. A friend pointed out that Disney could have just made a show about some bounty hunters fighting the empire and it would have required fewer mental gymnastics on the part of the viewers and avoided warping everything we've come to understand about the clones and chips from canon.
With that said, here's my idea (under the cut since it's long):
What if, instead of being superior mutants, TBB were regular CTs from various batches who were badly injured in random training accidents as cadets on Kamino? For example, maybe one lost his vision, one his hearing, one has a spinal injury, one a TBI (traumatic brain injury), etc.
They were injured at different times and the Kaminoans decided to experiment on them (which is of course awful, but so was everything about how the clones were brought up) with cybernetics to mitigate their disabilities; after all, while the Kaminoans are geneticists, they might want to know how their 'products' react to interfacing with technology. But then they went a step farther and created or purchased cybernetics that vastly improved whatever senses or abilities the young clones lost or had damaged—like Geordi in Star Trek, for example, who doesn't see like most humans but whose vision is often superior.
So the Kaminoans end up forming a little squad of clones who were part of clone culture before but have been removed from it because of their injuries and subsequent experimentation and recoveries.
I think this would be key in creating a different dynamic between TBB and other clones because then the show could have put less emphasis on TBB being bullied by the mean 'regs,' which makes the 'regs' come off as straight up villains. Instead, the writers could have come from the angle of making TBB feel isolated because of their own perceptions of themselves as 'less than' or 'freakish' or whatever terrible things they might think about themselves. To me, that's a hell of a lot more powerful and interesting than, "I was bullied by some people in this group so now I hate everyone in this group."
And sure, they probably would have been bullied by some, but I think it's a lot more reasonable to focus on how other cadets, being children, might have stared at them a lot because of their visible augmentations, or would have asked them insensitive questions, etc. For example, I have vitiligo on one leg and as a kid, every spring when I started wearing shorts I always got pointed at and asked "What is that??" Obviously this was due to curiosity rather than maliciousness, but it still felt very 'othering.' A lot of us have experienced this kind of thing IRL, and with TBB, it could have reinforced their feeling of being different and isolated.
Then we get to season 7 of TCW: in canon, after TBB has been being derisive of 'regs' and outright questioned Echo's loyalty, Hunter says that Echo doesn't belong with the 501st—people who know him and care about him the most—because he's 'different.' This angle fell really flat for me, because not only is it a 180 in terms of how TBB treated Echo, but they see themselves as different and superior. With Echo, on the other hand, there's the definite implication that he joins them because he is different and inferior (obviously not true, but this is Tumblr so unfortunately I have to spell that out)—so why would TBB suddenly extend a hand to a 'broken reg?' If, instead, TBB were cybernetically augmented like Echo, then that would have created an immediate connection between them, and I think it would have made a lot more sense for Echo to even consider leaving Rex and the 501st to join TBB.
So those are sort of the more plot/character-related bits that I think could have made for a deeper, more interesting conflict. But let me touch on some of the themes this could affect.
Sooo many stories of all kinds have done the, "I was bullied so now I'm a jerk," angle, and to me it just seems like the laziest way to try and get the audience to empathize with or even excuse shitty behavior by protagonists. Again, because this is Tumblr, I feel I need to point out that, no, empathizing with someone and excusing their behavior are two different things, but I can still empathize with someone and think they're a boring trash person. So, to me, the self-imposed isolation of, "I'm a freak and inferior so anyone who's nice to me is just doing so out of pity," is so much more interesting than, "some of those mean regs bullied me so now I hate all of them." Now, I'm sure there's plenty of fanon about TBB being jerks because they actually feel inferior, but that definitely didn't come across in TCW season 7, TBB episode 1, or the other TBB clips I've seen. So don't @ me about that. Not only would that thematic change be more complex and interesting (and yes, they could definitely do it in a kids show), but it wouldn't suddenly paint other clones as the villains just to make the viewer sympathize with TBB.
This angle would, I think, also mean a lot more to some people who have been isolated or bullied. I know plenty of people already relate to TBB because they are outcasts, but isn't self-imposed isolation far more profound and interesting? It offers a lot more opportunities for character development without laying all the blame on others.
I know there is often this narrative in stories of disabled folks 'overcoming' their disability and becoming 'normal,' which is obviously a crappy way to look at it. Yes, some disabled people would prefer not to have their disabilities, while others wouldn't feel like themselves without them and strongly identify with their own community within the larger disabled community. However, the changes I mentioned wouldn't even have to touch on 'overcoming disabilities'—it could simply show TBB struggling, from time to time, with certain aspects of their old injuries, even with the augmentations. But they help each other through it, just as IRL society should accommodate people with disabilities.
I think this idea could also avoid tearing down the theme that was present from episode 1 of TCW, when Yoda says that everyone is unique and valuable, regardless of who they are or what they look like. TBB, the show, came along and said, "Actually, forget all that—you need to be special and obviously different to be important or worth telling a story about." But because my alternate version of the characters would have started out as regular CTs and wouldn't have a superiority complex, it doesn't feel to me like it's disrespecting that original, wonderful message.
One final thing I wanted to add just because I think it would be a very cool visual representation of TBB's autonomy and identity: what if their visible cybernetic augmentations are very 'Kaminoan' looking? Imagine them as all white, with lots of curves and no real character to them, and how that could further reinforce the idea that TBB are, along with all other clones, property of the Kaminoans. But after, say, Tipoca City is destroyed and TBB eventually have to do repairs or make modifications to their cybernetics, they start adding all kinds of different pieces and end up with a mish-mash of things, which is aesthetically very Star Warsy? In addition, it could work as a visual representation of them becoming their own people.
Anyway, I'd love to read a fic like this but I have no interest in writing it, so I thought I'd yeet it into the Tumblr void. If anyone finds these ideas intriguing and wants to use them, feel free.

the bad batch season 2
really liked season one, trough probably too much because i headcanon Omega as trans.
Omega is badass now? cool.
Cid is damn manipulative... by having a valid point.
the call for adventure of the season: help people. they are good people, helping when the opportunity arises, seems like they'll be making the step to looking for places to help.
i just realized something i really like in this over clone wars: people can't die. don't get me wrong, it was neat, but it also meant you wouldn't get to know the cast. in this the cast is an actual cast.
oh, that's one fucking cliffhanger, strong opening.
stop being stupid, you can't run on a broken leg... i mean you can, but you shouldn't.
they were hunted by Wilco... the name sound familiar, but my memory for names is ass. also he's dead now, so not that it really matters. i literally caught it on his death grunt.
i do like the message, but i wonder where they'll be going with it.
Crosshair episode? also cody again, probably about to die too.
there's always something neat about a sniper just sniping overly well.
maybe not, maybe cody is able to leave and live. more likely not. the only reasonable way to achieve that is by linking up with Rex or task force 99. and i don't recall him being with Rex in rebels.
well damn, he went awol. hope we'll see him again.
i love a good race, especially layed out well, and it was. good episode
ok i'll admit it my gay hart is losing it over phee, worried she'll turn out to be the villain, or at least not trustworthy.
pre jedi stuff. how will not force users make it trough here. also they're going big with the music.
i was sure it would be a kibar cristal (lightsabre core). oh, it's big.
so i really did recognise him... HOW?!
the message of the show seems to me "people need their people". now this isn't a bad message, but is easily malformed.
ah, so wookies are argonians.
"don't stand where i'm flamethrowing"
i really like where she moved. how she seems to have grown... it's probably going to get her killed isn't it? ep 7 btw.
i love the leitmotifs.
damnit two parter? i need to prepare, not need to watch part two... oh well.
Echo's role is always the most questionable to me, but here they really found a role for him.
fuck he's such a politician. (yes that is obviously an insult)
feels fitting for Echo, the old squad reuniting... yet also we know this isn't where he ends up. after all i watched rebels.
hello purple hair, should i know you already?
and it's given proper weight, nice.
tech is autistic isn't he? because my god can he be almost stereotypically oblivious. damn growth for tech. also yea you'll always lose against water.
oh, this really just is the neurodivergent episode... and i think it's handled pretty well. episode 9. Techs and Omega's conversation around 22 minutes is very good.
nope purple hair is not someone we know, and definitely doesn't have cool feather hair.
ugly and disabled means evil... not a fan.
the workers suffer while and to increase the profit of the company? what a new story, good thing such things never happen in the real world /s. if only the solutions were ever more realistic. revealing the truth never changed anything. but obviously disney doesn't want to tell that.
a broken space dropping out of hyperdrive?
oh shit, they're continuing with what i thought was a dropped plotpoint. but why though? what do they plan to do with this plot now?
Rex? doesn't look like him, but certain talks like him. and i don't just mean same voice. i mean how and what he says. ep 12
oh, is this the deserting episode? they have been building it up.
in case it wasn't obvious enough the empire was evil and a bunch of dicks.
welcome to cold, the cruellest, slowest killer. the cruellest part may be the hope. there's nothing you'll survive better then cold, because while it kills you it also preserves you. you can hope to make it, until the moment you die. and the people who find your body will feel that same hope until your corpse is warmed up. it's a blessing too, for you'll survive it more often then drowning, but the hope is cruel.
damn that ending though.
are they planning to split to group up further? i mean probably the right decision, but not healthy for the series i think. they are making this play too idyllic, like 80% sure it'll either be destroyed or secretly evil. the only reason i'd say maybe not is because they seemed to have put too much afford into the assets to throw it all away. of all the enemies to throw at the it, this is one of the most mundane and with that cool. especially in it's accuracy.
also did they hint at this ship before? i didn't notice it but i'm notoriously bind to this type of ship. or did they introduce it in this episode.
that ship sure looks like the ghost.
"i suggest i you proceed before i come to my senses"
two things i still really like: Wrecker is allowed to be afraid of heights and it's not a flaw. a hinderance and a weakness, sure. but everyone has those. it's not something that's wrong with him that must be changed. Omega is trusted with important tasks and is competent. she's not just a tag along kid, she's an actual member of the team with useful skills like any of them.
there's going to be more then one team working here, that'll be a problem. called it, and called it... fuck. this season won't end in a successful rescue. they better be getting a season 3.
on no. i see the solution, Tech does too. please don't. yet you must. fuck. come on, it's too early in the episode for a mayor character death. right? unless the rest of the episode it to come to terms with the loss. i'm wrong... right? i mean... the start of the episode did set it up, but, like.. no?
this feels like an episode where they all die... but that can't be. they have an unresolved plot. whatsit fuck face needs omege, she needs to be captured and then rescued. that's how those plots go. everyone can't die, not yet at least, the plot demands it... right?
ok... they "salvaged" him. that has to mean he's alive... right? fuck i already know a friend of mine would call out my hopium.
another female clone? the fuck? also how can you be here? do what you do? that just doesn't make sense? trying to improve the system from the inside? that won't work with the empire, and if you were a mole you'd be a shit one. they're really hoping they'll get another season.

When the light is running low || Trial 6.1 || NULL || RE: Princesa, Niflheim, Beowulf, Tala
Cody's glad to see all the seats at the table filled (even Tony's, in a way) but this whole thing still has him feeling somewhat stressed. After all, given what they've found, he doesn't feel that the end of this trial will come as easily as the previous ones-- if anything, he's more concerned by what it'll all mean.
Haruka and Carter get right into shouting their thoughts first. Though he isn't as enthused by their choice of words, Cody will silently admit that they are both at least somewhat right. ...Silently. He's too stubborn to say it out loud...
Instead, he picks up on a few of the points brought up so far.
"Tempest was the one who founded Cyclone though, right? According to the journal entries we found, they were trying to keep the meteor away from the heroes. I don't remember if there was anything mentioning the 'why's of it, but if they were keepin' it under such a tight lockdown, my guess is they wanted to keep it away from... Well, anyone, probably-- heroes n' villains alike, but... Hm."
The gears turn a little in his head before he frowns with a huff.
"I'm... I'm wondering if the meteor's got some kinda hold over people when they're close to it for too long or something-- like, makes you want it, and think only you can wield it. Like the, uhhh, ring or whatever from that book with the Hobbit guys."
Lord of the Rings, but close enough. Cody's started gesturing a bit as his theorizing becomes more animated.
"Like, maybe that's why Tempest wanted to keep it away from the heroes, or maybe why they murked 'TOM'. Maybe that guy was thinkin' of using it, but got too wrapped up in the 'unga bunga I'm hero I'm the good guy meteor only for ME' thing that he was ready to fuck over regular-ass people in the process. Villain or not, I know I sure as shit woulda done the same thing as Tempest if that's what happened."
"And like-- it'd also explain why the journal author started going off about 'eradicating evil' and saying they were the one who had to 'take control and see if any of them were worthy', and then stepping back and lookin' at their own off-the-shits writing like 'whoa, what the fuck, gettaloadathisguy'. It..."
"It's like... An anglerfish, or a bug zapper. Just keeps pulling you in, closer and closer, with power or knowledge or whatever it can get you to want from it, until..."
A chill runs down Cody's spine as he recalls his deep dive into the meteor room's computer, and how the deeper he went, the longer he stayed, it felt like he was fragmenting down to bits of unrecognizable code. No longer someone, or something.
"Until it gets you. Until you're stuck."
He shudders, again, at the thought of vision they received from the meteor shard. At the thought of what became of Dr. Delphine Sainte-Martine.
"Until you end up like The Herald."

I saw your post about the FA's translations, and I totally agree. Sometimes, when they do not translate accurately, is to make it sound better or cooler in English, but it just ends up taking away a lot from the context and characters. We know how one of the most affected character interpretations is Katsuki's, a main character, no less. And Izuku and Katsuki's relationship too, which is something super super wrong, considering is deeply intertwined with the main plot of the series, thus if someone misinterpreted their dynamic, this person would miss a bigass chunk of the message the story has.
Here is the panel you mentioned before btw
Tumblr media
I remember when I read this, only 10 or 11 chapters into the manga (?), and I was like "...I'm...pretty sure this guy didn't say that" khshsjdhs
Tumblr media
OK FIRST OF ALL LMAO HELLO MANG!! THANK YOU SO MUCH AND DW ABOUT IT I TOTALLY GET WHAT YOU MEAN !!
(this is your warning for a long post ahead!)
In any case, I still think you're very correct on this! Not to ramble a bit, but Horikoshi's particular talent in developing the plot of MHA is actually very very brilliant and there are a lot of blink-and-you'll-miss-it details that together, assemble the big picture of what MHA is.
Translations are such an integral part of being able to understand foreign media. MHA or otherwise. The simplest of details say a lot about a character and often times make or break a series because everyone knows that strong character dynamics are what carry even the shittiest of plots.
First and foremost, I want to clarify that because of the nature of fan translations and the fact that most of it is volunteer work/ written out of pure enjoyment of the manga--we shouldn't judge these fan translators too harshly (if at all) for interpreting it the way they want to. FA, as far as I can tell, is a fan-based group that works out of donations.
The first thing I wanna bring up is that when it comes to fandom and its works, there are two types: Curatorial and Transformative. Now, the transformative part is something that must be very familiar to a lot of you. Fanfiction, fanart, and most headcanons fall under Transformative Works (i.e. AO3) because they are all about transforming the canon world to fit each individual's personal preferences. Meta-analysis posts and Character Breakdowns are also classified under this.
Curatorial on the other hand are fandom interactions made with the explicit purpose of being as close to canon material as possible. This is working out the logic of quirks, for example, or memorizing as much canon content about your favorite villain as possible. These are more cold, hard undeniable facts that lend themselves to the DIRECT VISION the creator/author had while making this media. If you were to ask me my opinion on this, this would be the moment where I tell you that the Curatorial side of fandom is where fan translations should (for the most part) fall under.
What people need to know though is that oftentimes, fan translations do not.
Translating isn't and has never been a one-is-to-one process. There are hundreds of thousands of aspects in a language that make it so that it isn't perfectly translatable. Colloquialisms to sayings to dialects, to just plain-out words that don't have a proper English translation to them! Manga is made by and for a Japanese audience, so obviously in a lot of instances, there will be cultural nuances that will not be understood by anyone who hasn't immersed themselves in Japanese culture/language.
So what does this mean then for fan scanlations?
It means that a vast majority of translators teach themselves to only get the essence of the message. They take the dialogue as they understand it and translate it to something of their interpretation. When language and cultural barriers exist, translators do what they can in order to make it understandable to the general populace. This means making their own executive decisions on how they see a character speaking. In example, if they see Todoroki using very direct and impersonal Japanese--one translator might interpret it to mean that Shouto is stiff and overly formal, while another may see it as him being rude and aloof.
The problem is, translators are fans just like us.
Like with the image Mang posted above, the translator based the usage of curse words off of their understanding of Bakugou's character. The lack of foul language in the original Japanese might have made the translator think "Oh. There just aren't enough Japanese cusses for his character." And took that as an initiative to make Bakugou's lines more colorful and violent because this was working off of the image Bakugou had had at this point in canon.
But Codi! You may cry. Wasn't it proven multiple times that Bakugou prefers concise and short lines? They should've known better!
Yes. Maybe they should've known better. But tell me honestly in your first watch-through of MHA, did you perfectly understand Bakugou's character either? Did you catch the whole 'direct and no flowery language' aspect of his language when you first saw Season 2?
Most people don't. I only really understood this fact after I'd read multiple discussions of it and even double-checked the manga myself. These are the kinds of things that only become noticeable with a sharp eye and some time to scrutiny. But the fact of the matter is that when it comes to fan translations, the clout and recognition are always going to go to who can post the quickest.
Am I excusing erroneous translations? A bit, I guess. It's hard for us to go in and expect translators to catch all these errors before release when we ourselves only catch these errors like 4 months in with a hundred times more canon context than these scanlation groups did at the time of its release.
Still, there are plenty of harms that come with faulty translations.
When a translation is more divorced from the original's meaning than usual, it creates a dissonance between what is actually happening versus what the audience sees is happening. This looks like decently-written character arcs being overruled and rejected by most of the readers because of how 'jarring' and 'clumsy' it seems. By the time translators had caught on to the fact that Bakugou was more than just a ticking time bomb, we were already several steps into showing how significantly he cares for Deku.
The characters affected most by these translation errors are often those with the most subtle and well-written character arcs. A single mistake in how the source material is translated can make or break the international reception of a certain character to everyone who isn't invested enough in them to look deeper into the canon source.
It creates hiccups in plots. Things that seem out of character but really aren't. Going back to MHA in specific, the way that inaccurate translations hurt both the 'curatorial' and 'transformative' parts of the fandom is that people have begun to cite them as proof of the main cast's characterization.
Bakugou and Todoroki are undeniably some of the biggest examples of mistranslation injustices.
Katsuki, in a lot of people's minds, has yet to break out of the 'overly-aggressive rival' archetype box that people had been placing him in since Season 1. One of the most amazing aspects and biggest downfalls of Hori's writing was that at first, nearly every character fit into a very neat stereotype for Shonen Animes (Deku being the talking-no-jutsu sunshine MC, Uraraka being the overly bubbly main girl, Todoroki being the aloof and formal rival). He made the audience make assumptions about everyone's characters and then pulled the rug beneath our feet when he revealed deeper sides of them to play around within canon.
What made this part about Horikoshi's set-up so good though were the many clues we were given from the very beginning that these characters were more than what they acted like. Even from the very first chapters, for example, we learn that Katsuki (as much as he acts like a delinquent) dislikes smoking because it could get him in trouble.
That is just a single instance of MHA's use of dialogue to subtly divert our expectations of a character.
Another example is when they replaced 318's dialogue of the Second User saying that Katsuki "completes" Deku with him saying that Katsuki merely "bolsters" him. This presents a different situation, as that line was meant to reinforce the importance of those two's relationship as well as complete the character foils that MHA is partially centered around. By downplaying their developed connection, it becomes harder for the MHA manga scanlations to justify any future significance these two's words have on each other without mottling the pacing of the story.
AKA, it butchers the plot.
With every new volume, there are dozens and dozens more of these hints and bits scattered around! So many cues and subtle foreshadowing at the trajectory of everyone's character arcs--yet mistranslations or inaccurate scans make it so that we don't notice them. This is what I mean when I said that some character arcs are being done great injustices.
Until now, many people can't accept that Katsuki Bakugou cares for anyone other than himself (much less his rival and MC, Izuku Midoriya), nor can they accept that Todoroki would ever willingly work by Endeavor's side. The bottom-line then becomes that because of people missing heavy bits of characterization that become very plot-significant in the future.
When it comes to the point where people can no longer accept or fit their interpretation of the earlier manga events to what is happening in canon, the point of a translation fails completely because it has lead people to follow an entirely different story.
TL;DR - Fan scans are hard. Translating is hard. Don't get too mad at fan translations, but also maybe don't treat them as the catch-all for how characters truly operate. Thanks.
Side note: DO NOT harass FA for any of these things. FA is actually a pretty legit and okay source for scans (they've been operating since like 2014 ffs), but regardless of that they still don't deserve to get flack for their work. You can have any opinion or perspective of canon that you want, I don't care. These are just my two (more like two million tbh) cents on translations. I suggest reading takes from actual Japanese audiences tbh if you wanna know more about the source material of MHA. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Castillo and Vance Things:
- Both of them come from big families and I think they're going to be brothers in law because Leej, Vance's cousin, married Martina, Castillo's sister so they're families are actually super close to each other so when they were fighting and Castillo was bullying Vance, it was really awkward for them.
- This also means they both live in a big house where a lot of people live together so there's always them rushing around and talking to each other on the phone.
Vance: Okay, just got Maiv out of the bathroom, how are you doing?"
Castillo: I HAVEN'T EVEN GOTTEN UP FROM BED BECAUSE PEDRO IS SITTING ON ME! MOOOOOOOOOM!"
Vance: "Well, hurry up, the line for this movie is probably already a block-long!"
- Vance does still get bullied but instead of joining in on it, Castillo steps in and it confuses everyone. Like some jerk is pouring milk on Vance's head again but this time, they get a football to the nose and Castillo is all: "Hey, buddy, just because his sweater vest is stupid doesn't mean you have to be a dick about it." / "Gee, thanks, Cas." / "You're welcome, Che."
- Since Castillo's family immigrated from Argentina, he still has a slight accent. That's one reason he became a bully, because people made fun of the fact he only spoke Spanish when he first moved and that he "talked funny" but now that he's one of the most popular guys in school, no one dares to pick on him.
- Vance doing all the girls in school a favor and trying to get Castillo from being a man-whore by scaring him.
Vance: "You're at least using a condom, right?"
Cas: "I don't know. Sometimes? Why?"
Vance: "I mean, we are filled with nuclear energy so maybe...You know what, just read this spiderman comic."
- And viola, Castillo doesn't sleep with girls anymore because he's scared he might accidentally kill one of them. Everyone say "Thanks, Vance."
- Castillo trying to turn elements into other elements but it's that one scene in Justice League action where he's screaming and having a complete mental breakdown.
- Vance has a huge crush on Brenda Song and it started with Zach and Cody: The Suite Life and he has a poster of her in his room and his family and Castillo make fun of him for it.
- But Vance reminds him he had a crush on Shego and still has an action figure of her and Cas is all: "Look at her and tell me I'm wrong, bitch."
- All of their families know their secret of them being Heatsurge, including their younger relatives, and it's so funny because they're younger siblings and cousins are all: "IF YOU DON'T DO THIS, I'M TELLING EVERYONE YOU TWO ARE-"/ Vance gets upset but Cas is all: "I'm so proud of you!"
- As Heatsurge, whatever pain they take, usually it's Castillo who feels it but when they seperate, Vance takes some of the pain too so now they're both injured but they smile like idiots and high five each other after they take down a villain.
- Fucking Castillo saying things wrong and it's so funny because he and Vance separate and Maikel is all: "Hey, where's Vance?" / "He's was just inside of me, he left not too long ago." And then Chix starts cackling and Castillo is like: "Wait, that doesn't sound right-"

28, 30, and 36 for the writing ask meme?
hi elth!!! thanks for asking 💕
28. Any writing advice that works for you and you feel like sharing?
hm i know i'm pretty. particular in that i Love routine and seek it out because it helps me not go insane, but i think that blocking out a bit of your day to sit down and write helps a lot. it doesn't have to be a lot of time, and you don't have to like. actually put words down. it can be the twenty minutes you spend onthe bus, or the bit of time right after lunch, or the hour right before you go to bed. but that way you train your brain to expect to do that particular thing at that time, and then it's not so hard to get in the mood and Write
i also think it's very important to remember to be kind to yourself, even if this is something i basically ignore when i'm in a mood lmao. sometimes you're burnt out or tired or you need a bit of distance, and that's Fine and you should listen to your brain. if you're stuck, you probably just need to step away and do something else for a while.
finally: don't be precious about writing. writing is just work. it's something you learn to do with practice and patience, like knitting or driving.
30. Describe a fic that almost happened, but then it didn’t.
back when i first had the idea for the yojimbo au (a good man is hard to find, the jango/obi-wan spaghetti western epic i wrote last year) it was going to be codywan! it was an obi-wan on tatooine post order 66 fic, and cody was going to be the villain, kind of. i remember that i couldn't make the idea work, though, and in the end i scrapped the whole thing and went in a very different direction (imho for the better).
36. How do you come up with fic titles? What’s the one you’re most proud of?
i usually come up with them myself. i think about the story's themes and try out words and word combinations until i find one that i like lmao. sometimes i borrow them from poetry or songs. i really like the vanishing summer, void with a chance of stars, and of dogs and wolves
(writing ask meme) (ask!)
