january 24 - dinner || @jegulus-microfic || wc: 557 || cw blood? but more the idea of it

Cooking dinner, and this was the part at which Regulus had always been horrible, the small talk, the place settings, the flickering of a candle in his peripheral vision. A misplaced relationship with his brother because their childhood house had been one of shadows with teeth, and he always had to be on the lookout. He heard a whisper, a rustle of clothing, from down the hallway and looked up to see Sirius halfway out the window, begging Regulus to come with him, to run away, we’ll die in this house, Reg, please. 

Regulus sighed, hands on the counter to ground himself to the here and now, Sirius laughing in the other room. He was trying. They were trying. He picked up the drink refills he had been sent into the kitchen to grab and made his way to the dining room, dripping the gooiest parts of himself across his brother’s floor as he did so. Eyes met him at the door, gray on gray, a few more smile lines than his own.

Sirius began to lift a hand to his chest but aborted the movement halfway through. Regulus felt it anyway, a claw mark in his sternum and it was ripping him open inch by inch, a scene from a horror movie, and maybe he was going to be sick because he could feel the wetness through his shirt and if he looked down, surely it would be blood. 

“Reg?” Two hands gripped his shoulders, and when he tore his eyes away from Sirius, he was looking at James, his brother’s incredibly stupid best friend. This dinner thing had been for them actually, because Sirius couldn’t be separated from James, soulmates of a peculiar sort, and he had informed Regulus that they had to meet. 

A ringing noise then, because Regulus felt like he had met James before, when Sirius was spitting at him in the middle of a grass field, or that’s what it felt like since everything else had fallen away the moment he had heard something something something more of a brother than you’ll ever be. James had been there then, in Sirius’ shadow, sans teeth, and in the smile lines around his eyes that hadn’t been there when he’d left.

Sound came back to him, all of a sudden, as did sensation, and he looked down at the water he had spilled across his shirt and his hands and the floor, heat rising in his cheeks, shards of glass at his feet. Sirius stared at him, shocked, unmoving, per usual. James’ hands were gentle on his shoulders as he moved Regulus backwards, out of the way, sitting him down in a chair and grabbing a napkin from his place setting. 

There was silence as James moved around Sirius’ house like it was his own, dust pan for the glass, paper towels for the water, new cups, new napkins, new shirt for Regulus. One of Sirius’ from several years ago, and he remembered this one, which was the only reason he pulled himself out of the chair he’d been guided to and into the bathroom to change. 

Forehead to the mirror and a deep, uncontrollable sense of why am I here and so close to calling Barty to come pick him up and James fucking Potter knocking softly at the door. 

“Dinner’s ready.”

sometimes i think about c!tommy and water. playing in the river in l'manberg, the ocean in logstedshire and how he’d try and drown himself in his sleep, using the water to break his fall and save his life, how he’d casually throw himself into the water and hurt himself after exile. the lake outside the prison. idk why c!tommy's always been so associated with water to me. (jack is fire, tubbo is earth, and ranboo is air, but I think those associations are more obvious).

Something i find endearing abt s5 ep7 of House MD is when Cameron is talking to House he keeps on pestering Cameron abt why she hasn't moved in with Chase yet. And at first you think 'oh it's just House trying to piss off Cameron and the team' but a. Hugh's playing House sincerely here so the questions aren't just there to fuck with any of them really and b. the scene theoretically would have gone on for a couple of mintues if 13 didn't shut him down. Sure, House makes his quips but like House is like also genuinely pointing out issues that Cameron would 100% bring up to Chase which would help move their relationship move along faster, idk the whole scene read kinda sweet too me

I just finished the scripts for Succession S2 and I think some of your tags indicate you have as well. The finale script left me with two questions I thought you might have a view on. 1. Maybe it's me but I read the "summer of competitive eating disorders" line from Connor as non-literal. Like there was that one summer where everyone was messed up about food (and maybe everyone did have eating disorders) but it wasn't a literal competition. Is that a weird read? I keep seeing fics that are taking it literally so I may have misunderstood. 2. What is up with Logan being so possessive of Kendall? It's there in the episodes but the way he talks to Naomi is crazy in the scripts. I don't think Logan's really interacted like that with Tom or Willa or Tabitha - is it because Naomi is a Pierce or is it another one of those weird Kendall and Logan things?

Yeah, I have only recently finished reading the s2 scripts, and I've just started on s3. I've actually been enjoying reading them pretty slowly and percolating on them, but I was even more slowed down the last couple of weeks because my nephews were staying with me for the school holidays. It's meant most of my reading has been with and for them, haha, but I can highly recommend Mike Lowery's Bug Scouts book series for the five year olds in your life!

But yes! To your questions.

The Summer of Competitive Eating Disorders

I don't think that's a weird reading at all.

I think a lot of people have a tendency to view things mentioned on the show as very literal (the dog pound being probably the most obvious example, but also Roman's comments about being molested and all of the Roy siblings' insistence around things they did or didn't know about cruises / the wolf pack [especially after reading the s2 scripts and starting the s3 scripts, I think it's pretty heavily implied that Shiv and Roman ignore the things that they knew while Kendall does know more than them, yet not as much as he thinks. He postures his insider knowledge when his dad kept him more in the dark than he cares to admit, which of course falls apart over the course of s3).

That said, all four kids do have textual issues with food, and way back in 2022, I talked about the way the show utilises food as a symbol for power, particularly in the sense of who has it and who doesn't, which is something I stand by.

In tha sense, I think you're right - there wasn't a literal Summer of Competitive Eating Disorders, but I think the memory of it as one is probably reflective of a period of time where either Logan was particularly neglectful, or particularly present. Something abnormal that triggered a new way of dealing with food - enough for Connor to notice and remember it - and personally I'd kind of read it as the former? This is of course totally a headcanon, haha, but I could see it as the summer after Logan pushed Caroline out and the kids were left with the lingering aftermath of that.

In other words, I agree with you, haha, but I can absolutely see why it captured people's imaginations too.

Logan's possessiveness of Kendall

I actually have another ask in my inbox that I've been circling for ages on this, so I'm going to try and answer that tonight (finally!), but yes, I do think his possessiveness around Kendall is specific even among his children, and I agree that it was definitely even more explicit in the scripts.

It's an interesting sticking point that Naomi is a Pierce, but I honestly don't think that's entirely an issue - if it was Roman, for instance, I think Logan would think it was a great in or a strategic move for him, and he clearly didn't think anything of Connor's friendship and political partnership with Maxim.

Logan's possessive of all of his kids, of course, but it does feel different with Kendall, and I think there are a few reasons for that which I'll talk about in this other answer (and I'll try and link back here so it's easy to find!), but it really does make me so curious about how Logan was with Rava.

Bad, I imagine, especially because I do think the show wants us to view Rava as canonically Jewish.
