Audiodrama Sunday 04/28/24

So much stuff this week! I think this is going to be my longest writeup yet!

@camlannpod what the fuck? Trying to avoid spoilers, but the ending of that episode was wild. The sound design for the last scene was so good. Also “You're good with an axe, right?” was brutal, I audibly said "oof". Only 1 more episode in the season, hopefully they get funding for a second one.

The first episode of @wanderersjournalpod came out this week. This was a promising start to a new show, I'm excited to see where it goes from here. The setting feels very mystical, I can't wait to learn more about the world.

@worldsbeyondpod was so tense. Suvi and Ame had the most awkward conversation in existence. This story has so much nuance, neither of them are clearly in the right, though I feel inclined to take Ame's side due to the "Geas + Alter Memory" double espionage scheme. Meanwhile Ursulon discovers that Orima of the Reaching Green is a short queen and gets a cool horse.

I'm now up to date with @lostterminal. Season 15 was great. I love Nia, and Daphne and Raffi were really interesting new characters. Also, the dragon was terrifying. This show doesn't usually have very much action, so the confrontation with it really stood out. The description of the automatic turret going "click, click" as it locked on to Maddie was so intimidating.

@worldgonewrongpod I loved this episode. The storytelling felt so natural and real, like someone telling me a story about a weird road trip they went on. I think I said this about the last episode too, but this was my favorite episode yet. It also sets up the backstory which was never really explained as to why Jamie and Malik are separated at all.

In @midstpodcast we finally had a nicer episode. No horrible fucked up Weep/Trust stuff happening, just Lark reunited with Zeila and Sherman. However, there's so much tension between these characters. I was surprised that Lark forgave Sherman for selling her out. Something to remember is that Lark and Sherman had been hooking up before everything went to shit, which was mentioned once and I think really changes their relationship.

New @keepitsteadypod! This is the first new episode of this show since I started doing these. This was a really cute episode. For how popular fake dating is as a trope in fandom spaces, you don't see a lot of it in audiodramas.

Fun episode of Mission Rejected this week. It was cool to see Bowden go from "vain actor" to "badass spy" when the stakes ramped up. We don't get to see him take charge very often, it was neat for him to be a competent leader. I wonder if the gang lying to Zelda(who definitely saw through it) and Chet(who probably didn't) is foreshadowing for more of a conflict with the new Secretary of Defense later in the season. Also I loved the squabbling gay couple running an illegal mining operation as the villains of the week.

@breakerwhiskey episode 200 wow. A letter from Harry! We learned that Harry has been listening to most of Whiskey's broadcasts, which recontextualizes a lot of the previous episodes. Also, the end was heartbreaking.

I started season 2 of @longcatmedia's Mockery Manor! I'm 2 episodes in and really like it so far. JJ and Bettie are employed in different parks, JJ is on the run from an organized crime ring, and Bettie became a monk? Also, it's clear that neither Hilda nor Jenkins stole the shipment, neither of them have motive. But I don't know who else would have motive either. Lots of mysteries this season.

Spout Lore had a great planning episode. I'm excited for the "saving Highspear" arc, the Highspear is so cool as a concept. A reverse Tower of Babel, that lets the whole world talk with each other. A literal monument to wizard hubris, which feels destined to fall. However I doubt it will, because, as the players mentioned, it would be really annoying from a storytelling perspective if everyone suddenly spoke different languages. This has actually made me realize I really want a story set shortly after some sort of "fall of the Tower of Babel", where communication is a struggle, but that's just because I think linguistics is cool. Anyways, the buffet talk had me rolling.

What a great week! However, it did not help my queue, which continues to grow instead of get smaller. I'll reach the end of it one day.

Accidentally gave Pomme one of the books Ourson (I think it's this one?) gave him, immediately panicking when he realized. When Pomme asks what it was, he first tries to pretend not to understand, and is pretty serious when he tells her that it's nothing; he'll tell her about it one day, and it's his little secret garden, everyone should be allowed to have secrets, don't she think? she isn't against secrets, right?

Certain that the eggs went to some kind of other dimensions/got doubles?? I mean there was a theory inspired by Stranger Things but despite what Pomme is saying he's not letting go of the idea

After asking Pomme if she met dark Cucurucho and she talks about the Watcher: "Je crois pas qu'on parle de la même chose. Là tu me parles de l'oeil, et moi je pense que je te parle de quelque chose d'autre. Je pense que tu me parles du Watcher... là où moi je te parle d'autre chose." Knows that Maximus is dead, when all the other players seem to have decided to play the "don't know if he's alive or dead" card (bonus: Antoine and Pomme talking about telling Aypierre, and Pomme thinking she won't be able to find the right words "I don't think there are right words..." ok im sad now thanks). Since we're at it, when reading Pomme diary where she worries about Baghera and Antoine being dead, saying they can't be dead, he doesn't share that worry in the slightest, as if he knows Baghera's not dead (this one's dubious and I am very willing to put it as cc!Antoine not thinking rp)

He and Pomme are talking about what she remembers of the Watcher and honestly the whole conversation deserves to be clipped and transcribed. To go with him name dropping the Watcher, he is now only calling it the creature with one eye because that's how Pomme calls it

Pomme explains that the Watcher was observing her and Richas and there was a threatening aura to it, so they immediately fled. Antoine in a very serious voice "You were right to, you were right to, you were right to. Because I think it's this person who was at the origin of your disappearance."

#once in english class we watched A Study in Pink and had to take notes on the filmmaking details we noticed #I think about that specific day pretty often because I so suddenly discovered I had so much fun noticing all of this stuff #and there was a lot to notice #minute details where you can't be sure if they're there or if the curtains are just blue #like light and dark in a frame foreshadowing the morality of people in that position in the next frame and the like #stuff where you can't tell if it's intentional but even if it's not it's still doing something #and that so quickly and clearly nailed it for me what I myself like in visual storytelling in films and would love to do myself someday #and come to think of it that's exactly why Lucky Number Slevin is my favorite movie #(one of the reasons) #because it's on a whole different level #it's chock full of details that on the surface are just pretty #then below that they have a pretty solid function that's not too hard to make out #and then below that there's a fucking world of 'look what this is also doing' that makes my heart race when I spot a new one #there's load bearing convoluted wallpaper for fucks sake. Like gay sex is always gay sex and I wouldn't call it "Sapphic sex" or anything dumb like that but I have had a problem with calling myself and my relationship business gay for like a long time now

Like I distinctly remember times when I said it because I wanted to be quiet about it #And im pretty quiet about being bisexual now too which I try to do because I don't think it makes sense to talk #To strangers about being bisexual when I'm in a straight relationship #like straight people don't care about gay stuff they just want to talk to me about straight stuff #so my ssa is hardly relevant. But I have been thinking about it sometimes lately #and I suspect I have a bit of anxiety about people knowing I'm bisexual. Toyed around with who I'd use for this one since you didn't specify a character, ended up with Sam since his palette fit best. He IS a menace to society honestly so it fits I think.

And surprise I am using this ask game as an excuse to divulge some snippets about these guys concerning whatever I end up illustrating, which means I get to talk about my absolute favorite subject (not even being sarcastic, I LOVE writing for this guy), which is Sam's very. Very. messed up worldview!!!

I just think a lot about the mental gymnastics he went through to convince himself that what he'd done is not his fault while at the same time feeling absolutely guilty about it. He views the event as proof of his worst anxieties, a confirmation that he is the deeply horrible person he fears he is, but at the same time doesn't actually believe himself to be responsible. He didn't plan on killing Rose, it just happened. It was a complete accident and isn't the overwhelming guilt he feels everyday enough proof that he truly didn't mean to do something so awful?

He's a very silly guy I think.

#this is kinda unrelated to this but i saw some teens complain that fanfics are for teens and adults shouldn't write them #which i highly disagree because what gave me motivation to write was that scarabedo fic which was written by an adult #and other talented writers in university #like i didn't have a goal until i saw their writing and i wanted my writing ability to reach that too #so i aspire to get a masters in english #it's a shame that some kids try to fake fun of adults who make this type of art #because you can really learn a lot from them #they put so much effort into works that anybody can read for free while balancing work and/or school #like they put A LOT of effort #the foreshadowing and storytelling and when they ask people to beta read their fics for them #they put so much effort into every aspect of a fic and they're doing it for free #and yet kids laugh at them just because they are adults :/ #it's really sad #sorry for that rant i was just thinking about it the whole day and wanted to say something since i love writing so much #there are a lot of times...where i get annoyed at people my own age :/ #ivyanswers
