Breaking from SDCC: The first Avatar Studios movie coming to theaters in 2024 will follow Aang! And, exclusive from Avatar News: it will be set in a time period where Team Avatar are young adults!
At today’s Braving the Elements panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Janet Varney (the original voice of Korra) announced that Avatar Studios’ first animated movie coming to theaters will be about Aang and his friends!
Avatar News previously revealed Avatar Studios’ slate of movies with a different project, Kyoshi, coming first. As I mentioned in that post, the order/dates of the projects could change, since it’s super early. I’ve even heard that some of their projects have shifted between being movies and shows, so it’s obviously still all very fluid. (Update: We now have a full understanding of how this change happened, which can be read here. A Kyoshi movie was definitely in development at the time, but has been delayed.)
I have an additional exclusive to add though: Team Avatar will be adults/young adults in this movie. I know a more specific age range, but I’m not allowed to reveal that yet.
If you follow Avatar News on social media, you’ll know I had plans to reveal live-action news on Thursday and Friday and animation news on Saturday and Sunday of SDCC. My post tomorrow was going to be that they'll be adults in the Zuko movie (here’s proof), so that has obviously been bamboozled. I’m not sure if the Aang movie is the “Zuko-focused” movie, but I can tell you that the/a “Zuko movie” was definitely scheduled to be the second one at one point, and it makes total sense they would do Aang era first instead!
As for Kyoshi, I don’t know what’s happening with her place in animation. An earlier version of the schedule I saw had Aang in 2024 and Korra in 2025, so it’s possible that was always the case, or they switched the schedule or switched back, or... who knows! As I mentioned, some projects have shifted between movie and show, so it’s possible her movie became a show, or it will take the 2025 or 2026 slots, all of which could still change, obviously.
I guess my last note should be that theoretically the adult Gaang project could be a different project than the 2024 Aang movie, but I highly doubt it. But, I’ll say that’s possible here for posterity.
Get hype! And thank you to Avatar Studios for the official update!

One of the coolest things that happened at Twin Cities Con was getting pictures of Avatar voice actors with the minifigs I made of them
Zachary Tyler Eisen with Aang
Jack De Sena with Sokka
Dante Basco with Zuko
Grey DeLisle with Azula
Greg Baldwin with Iroh
Janet Varney with Korra
It was so cool to meet them and show them my minifigs!

Quote
Perhaps it will soothe your soul to know that even in the writer’s room, as this show [Avatar: The Last Airbender] was being written, writers were advocating for Zutara. Like, they were like ‘No! Come on!’. Like, there was like, the hardcore Zutara fans in the, you know, early aughts when the show was being written. Even if it was a show ostensibly written for kids, people were like 'Come on! Let's do this! It makes sense!'

Braving the Elements season 3
The new season of the podcast Braving the Elements concerning the book 3 of the Avatar the Last Airbender started, predictably with the appearance of Mike and Bryan. They talked a little about how busy they are with “something” and a bit more about book 3 “Fire”. There was a lot of mutual admiration and general excitement, but we got some information as well.
- It’s been 20 years, and they don’t remember every detail of their thought process
- they remember some stuff, and are always happy to talk about their inspirations. Like Bryan talking about his trip to Iceland, his admiration for its natural beauty made by volcanic activity, and how Iceland photos became Fire Nation landscapes.
- or Mike telling about his trip to Bhutan and his awe at the Tiger’s Nest temple that became an inspiration for the Western Air Temple.
- they talked about how Ozai’s face reveal – that he is just a regular guy who looks like older Zuko whole we don’t see until Zuko meets him face to face – was initially thought to mean one thing, then it started to mean a slightly different thing, and it is fine.
- Dante was super excited to meet Mark Hamill when recording voices for Zuko and Ozai. (who wouldn’t)
- they talked about inspiration for the lion turtle they found in Korea, and that it really was meant to me there in the story from the beginning, and they tried to hide it while giving away glimpses.
- 99.9% of Air Nomads were airbenders. Because that’s how they invented that world, that’s why.
- Aang was never going to kill Ozai. Never ever. He is a monk and has monk ethics no matter what everyone was telling him.
- animating the scene where Aang and Ozai’s souls are fighting for the dominance during the energybending moment was rather challenging.
- In Bryan’s mind, Iroh is ten years older than Ozai. It is not a confirmed canon, more like idea. Iroh looks much older because of the life he lived, while Ozai has an amazing skincare routine.
- they don’t know any other Fire lords’ names. But you know, those names appear and will appear in various materials – novels, RPG, etc.
- Mike and Bryan love canon relationships – surprise!
- Dante admitted that while he ships Zutara, he started vibing with Zuko/Mai’s relationship as well as he was actually watching the show. Which is fine, and only serves to show his general attitude to shipping: it is a fun activity that keeps the interest going and in the long term helps him to earn money.
- Yes, Dante, there are good people in the Fire Nation, as you’ve been saying all the previous episodes. This time everyone agreed, since we are finally arriving to the Fire Nation.
- I probably forgot something, but you may listen to it – or, for the first time – also watch it on the Avatar the last Airbender official Youtube channel. At first I thought why? And then after I listened to the podcast I couldn’t remember what said Bryan and what said Mike. Not to imply that they are the same – they are very much not- but I have a trouble distinguishing voices I don’t know well. So I watched a bit – and really liked it. Whoever edited the video did a great job of adding some visual jokes and visual illustrations to whatever Janet, Dante, Mike and Bryan were saying. So we can see how Bryan’s photos of Iceland became the Fire Nation, and how Tiger’s Nest looks like.
And it is so easy to remember who was saying what! Mike is the one who looks like Aang, Bryan is the one who looks like Zuko, Dante is the one who sounds like Zuko. And occasionally talks as if he is Zuko.

So I Was Just Listening to Braving the Elements, And...
[People already know this if they've listened to the podcast, obviously, but I've seen this nowhere so I have to share for those who haven't]
I'm listening to a meet the writer's episode with John O'Bryan and they were asking about ships and THIS CONVERSATION HAPPENED:
Janet: John, how do you fare in the world of ships? Do you have a ship that you enjoy and do you know what we're talking about when we say that?
John: Oh, yeah, of course! Um, I would have gone Katara/ Zuko.
Janet: Zutara!
Dante: That's what I'm talking about, John!
John: So, I know we're on the- I know we lost that fight, but...
Dante: Yeah, we did. But was it a fight? Was there talks about that in the writer's room? Inquiring minds wanna know.
John: Yeah, yeah, I think definitely that stuff came up a lot. I'm sure there's some other dimension, some alternate dimension, though, where they are a thing.
!!!
I'm just, like, wow!! I immediately got out my computer because I had to share. this is a momentous occasion [or it was, two years ago]. I really need to catch up on episodes but I'm so glad I listened to it. The next time a Kata.anger says it wasn't considered, direct them to this episode, please.

we could have the voice of korra in scenes with a character who was inspired by korra

Avatar at SDCC 2023
Here’s your rundown of the Avatar franchise’s presence at San Diego Comic-Con this year:
👉 [CANCELLED] Avatar: Braving the Elements—Live! on Thursday July 20th at 1pm!
The Braving the Elements panel this year has been ***cancelled*** last minute due to the SAG-AFTRA strike meaning that hosts Janet Varney (the voice of Korra) and Dante Basco (the voice of Zuko) aren’t attending SDCC.
This is the panel that Avatar Studios revealed their first animated movie, the adult Team Avatar one, at last year; we don’t know what would have been revealed, if anything, this year.
It’s possible the soundtrack that was just announced today completely out of the blue was supposed to be revealed at this panel.
👉 Water, Earth, Fire, Air: Continuing the Avatar Legacy on Saturday, July 22nd at 12:30pm!
This year’s publishing panel is still on. This is where we could get news on novels, comics, etc.
This is the panel that the Azula in the Spirit Temple solo graphic novel was announced at last year, as well as the new Korra comic trilogy/trio, the first of which is supposed to be focused on Mako. This SDCC, we’re hoping that Mako comic is fully revealed, as well as maybe preview pages for Azula, and an even longer shot would be finding out who the next ATLA and/or TLOK comics will be about (Azula/Mai/Ty Lee; Mako/Bolin/Asami??)
It’s also possible with The Legacy of Yangchen just having coming out this week that the next Chronicles of the Avatar novel will be announced, revealing which Avatar the next books will be about, but they haven’t previously had news at comic cons so it’s not a sure deal.
👉 Mattel ATLA collector set
Mattel is releasing an Avatar: The Last Airbender collector set on the Barbie movie’s release date this Friday!
It will be available at the Mattel Creations booth, check out more info here.
👉 The Legacy of Yangchen exclusive edition
An exclusive edition of The Legacy of Yangchen is available at booth 1216!
That’s it as far as I know. It’s a pretty low-key SDCC this year across the industry due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. For Avatar, keep an eye out for potential publishing news and don’t have any expectations beyond that.

Marisha Ray and Mica Burton’s pure joy at Janet Varney voicing Keyleth’s mother was so great to witness!
Marisha’s dreams coming true, who knew that character she created for a home TTRPG as an homage to Avatar: the Last Airbender will come full circle to this!

I find it hilariously beautifully ironic that Vilya, a master of elements, is voiced by Janet Varney, who played Avatar Korra, master of the elements.
