Yes, this is another September “back to school” column. My apologies. But someone needs to keep pointing out that our national debate over which books to allow in classrooms, or how to teach slavery to middle-schoolers, is far less consequential than the continuing inability of most youngsters to read or do math at grade level.

In Florida, where GOP governor and presidential candidate Ron DeSantis has taken lumps for a couple sentences in a 200-page black-history curriculum, only 39% of Miami-Dade County fourth-graders are proficient in reading, according to a Miami Herald report last year on standardized test results. By eighth grade the number drops to 31%, and math scores are just as bad. Who cares if kids have access to books by Toni Morrison or Jodi Picoult if most of them can’t comprehend the contents?

These dismal outcomes have persisted nationwide for decades, and the racial achievement gap is even more disturbing. The U.S. Education Department reported last year that in 2022 the average reading score for black fourth-graders in New York on the National Assessment of Educational Progress trailed that of white fourth graders by 29 points. This “performance gap was not significantly different from that in 1998,” the report added.

The progressive left’s response to these outcomes has been to wage war on meritocracy rather than focus on improving instruction. The goal is to eliminate gifted-and-talented middle-school programs, high-school entrance exams and the use of the SAT in college admissions. One defense of racial preferences in education for black students is that recipients, including those who go into teaching, are more likely to work in low-income minority communities after graduation. That’s true, but is it what economically disadvantaged students really need, more second-rate teachers?

In his lively autobiography, “Up From the Projects,” the late economist Walter Williams related an incident from his teaching days at California State University, Los Angeles in the late 1960s. A black student approached him at the end of the course and said he needed a B to graduate. The student told Williams that he wanted to teach school in Watts, a predominantly black section of Los Angeles. Williams replied that Watts didn’t need any more mediocre educators. He added, jokingly, “If you’d said San Fernando Valley”—a predominantly white area back then—“I’d have given you the B.”

Williams was appalled that many of his academic colleagues were holding their black students to lower standards. “There was no more effective way to mislead black students and discredit whatever legitimate achievements they might make than giving them phony grades and ultimately fraudulent diplomas,” he wrote. Sadly, the downstream effects of lax standards for black students that concerned him more than 50 years ago have only gotten worse.

Medical students in all 50 states must pass a licensure exam before they can practice. The exam has three parts, and Step 1 is administered at the end of the second year of medical school. It measures your grasp of basic science topics—anatomy, biology, biochemistry, pharmacology—and is highly predictive of how you will perform in medical school going forward.

A student’s numerical score on the Step 1 exam has long been the most important tool in evaluating candidates for the most competitive medical disciplines and residency programs. Three years ago, representatives of the nation’s leading medical groups voted to scrap numerical scores and report the results of the Step 1 exam as pass/fail.

The reason is simple, according to Stanley Goldfarb, an academic physician and former associate dean of curriculum at the University of Pennsylvania’s medical school. In a recent book on how social-justice activism has affected medical training, “Take Two Aspirin and Call Me By My Pronouns,” Dr. Goldfarb explained that black students underperform on the Step 1 exam. “The solution to the fact that white students score better on the exam was to eliminate reporting scores,” he wrote, which “makes about as much sense as Major League Baseball eliminating batting averages to assure that no ethnic cohort outperforms the others.”

Dr. Goldfarb’s book has an amusing title—which comes from an op-ed he wrote for this paper in 2019—but what it describes is nothing to laugh at. Those who complain about racial disparities in medical outcomes might consider how racial double standards contribute to them. Medical schools have been pressured to relax admission standards for diversity purposes, which has led to the relaxation of grading standards and licensure requirements.

Black doctors are more likely than white doctors to practice in medically underserved areas, but low-income blacks need second-rate doctors even less than they need second-rate teachers. For whatever reason, it seems lost on progressives that addressing the racial achievement gap in K-12 education would go a long way toward addressing the one in medical school.

This is honestly the thing that's the most troubling. There are activists in schools masquerading as teachers who insist it's a moral imperative to teach young children complicated postmodern intersectional conspiracy theories, yet can't - or won't - actually teach those same kids to read.

"Antiracist" teachers behaving like black kids don't need to learn to read, and it's more important that they understand their place in a perverted conception of social hierarchy, is a disturbing rehabilitation of the KKK's golden years.

Bargain of Blood and Gold by Kristin Jacques - 3.75/5 stars

Reminiscent of Jordan L Hawk's Widdershins series, but with vampires and werewolves. Also takes place in Maine, which isn't a very common setting. Unwittingly, I bought the second book in the series months ago, and I realized as it got to the top of my TBR that I didn't have the first book! I had to scramble to order it and I was happy I enjoyed it since, obviously, I already have the second book.

I actually liked the story, the characters, and the writing in general, but this book just needed another few edits to slim it down a bit.

The blurbs on this book are hilarious, because they're all like, tall ships people, and then Mackenzi Lee, hailing it as a lovely queer historical romance. This was a really lovely book and I'm excited for the sequel. Also hoping for more kissing in the sequel since this was a serious slow burn.

Main character is the best friend of both the bride and the groom, and everything surrounding the wedding becomes a train wreck beginning on the weekend of the bachelor party, when the bride asks the MC, Dom, to keep tabs on the groom for her. As someone who is extremely conflict avoidant with friends but not family and romantic partners, I heavily related to Dom. There's also a romance that I really loved.

Romance Languages by AJ Truman - 4.25/5 stars

I think this was my favorite of the South Rock series. It deals with some more difficult topics—Julian's self-loathing over his body image is heartbreaking (and relatable), and Seamus's guilt over the way his gambling addiction hurt his ex was very well done. I'm a sucker for stories where a character learns to ask for help, not to mention difficult parent-child relationships, and this had both. I also appreciated Julian's arc re: sex and virginity.

Darkhearts by James L Sutter - 5/5 stars

Another bandmates-in-love treasure, with a twist—the main character, David, left the band right before they got famous. He ends up falling for one of his ex-friends/bandmates after they reconnect. The author is a musician himself, and it definitely shows (in a good way). I'm really a sucker for The Burdens of Fame, which this book definitely had, but there's actually a really good arc for David and how he deals with his jealousy and resentment over being left behind. Plus he wants to be a carpenter rather than go to college, which was cool.

What can I say about this book? Why was it so lovely? Why did it make me feel so much? Why can I not rate things higher than 5 stars? It's a million stars in my heart. Aside from just being a gorgeous mid-century America m/m romance (my favorite), this one features an Italian-American main character. The stuff with Nick's family was spot-on. I just loved this book. I felt like I was wrapping myself in a big, comfy, historical gay romance blanket.

Drowned Country by Emily Tesh - 5/5 stars

The sequel to Silver in the Wood. Had a very mythic and sort of folk horror vibe. This one is from Henry Silver's POV instead of Tobias Finch's and takes place two years after Silver in the Wood, which is time that Henry has mostly spent sulking in Greenhollow Hall, sans Tobias. Really highly recommend this duology. Emily Tesh is a treasure.

Intro: No one truly knows what happened that night in Woodsboro, California. All the public knows was that two teenage boys, Billy Loomis and Stu Macher, went crazy. That the boys killed with no motive, that it was a case of crazy and peer pressure. Sidney Prescott, the "girlfriend" of Billy Loomis,Y/n L/n, the girl both boys were deeply obsessed with, and Gale weathers, a news reporter, where 3 of 5 witnesses that were willing to talk and tell their sides of the story to the public while Dewy Riley, the deputy sheriff of woodsboro, and tennager Randy Meeks refused to talk to law enforcements at the time. All the stories told to law enforcement seem to differ from person to person, but...in this tale, we will focus on Y/n, the obsessions, side of the story...

Chapter 7- Blood and Organs

"Jason didnt show up till the squeal!" The man hissed out. "Now...im afraid that was a wrong answer" he said, going back to talking calmly.

"You...you tricked me" Casey muttered under her breath as she hung her head low.

"Lucky for you theres a bonus question"

Casey's head popped up as he said that.. Maybe Steve wouldn't die.. Maybe shed get to run out there pull the tape off of him and kiss and hug him..

But she knew that her wish was unlikely..

"But... Poor Steve.. Im afraid hes out" the man said, crushing Casey's already broken heart with those words.

Casey rushed to the patio door just in time to hear Steves muffled screams and a sickly sound of something spilling onto the floor.

Casey reached out her shaky hand and turned on tje patio lights just in time to see Steves head fall back and to see his organs slip out of his body and dangle from his gut.

Casey felt her body grow weak. All she felt was sadness and hatred for both herself and the man over the phone.

She wanted to do nothing but kick his ass, beat the man to a pulp and make his life a living hell.

Casey slid down the wall and moved back, she felt weak and angry, both emotions overwhelming her poor mind.

"Hey! Were not done yet!" The man over the phone growled out.

"Final question....are you ready?" He asked as Casey pressed the phone slowly against her ear.

Casey felt like giving up..she had already lost Steve...

"Please...please... Leave me alone...please" Casey begged through pointless sobs.

"Answer the question and i will" he said, a flirty yet evil tone returning to his harsh voice.

"What door am I at?" The man asked.

Casey cried more, her bottom lip quivering as her fingers grasped the phone tightly.

"There are two main doors in your house...the front door and the patio door..if you answer correctly you live"

Casey knew he was near..

He was close..

She could feel him watching her..

His eyes graced over her body and her saddened fearful face..

That face made the mans heart lurch with excitement as he licked his lips behind his mask, he couldn't wait to see what her insides look like spilled all over the grass..

"Dont do this.." Casey whispered.. The begging just made him want to kill her even more..

"I cant...i won't" she cried

"Your call" he purred.

Casey had a feeling... A feeling in her gut...

She peared around the corner just in time to see jer patio window smash open and a chair come crashing through.

Casey jumped up, her flight or fight sences kicked in, adrenalin pumped through her veins and she rushed passed the window and started to run..

Casey ran through the kitchen, smoke from the burning popcorn filled the air and burned her eyes, clouding her vision.

Casey grabbed a kitchen knife as she slowed down, she waiting as she gripped the knife in one hand and the phone in the other.

She walked closer to her window. At this point she knew someone was in her house and she needed to get out as quick as possible..

Casey opened her back door slowly, careful not to make a sound.

She slowly shut the door yet it made a loud click.

Casey's breath hitched in her throat as she stumbled and pressed her back firmly against the wall.

Casey was close to hyperventilating as she took in deep breaths, trying to settle herself down so maybe the mam wouldn't hear the thump of her heart..

Casey looked back into her house, her eyes fluttering back and fourth, trying to locate the murder in her house.

Then..she saw him..his tall lanky body covered in a black hooded outfit and a white mask covering his face, as soon as she saw him he rushed across the room, knife in hand.

Casey quickly pushed herself back flush against the wall, her shaky hand gripping the knife ever so tightly.

Casey looked out in the distance and she saw headlight....Y/n...

Casey didn't want her bestfriend to die like her boyfriend..but...just maybe

.. Y/n could save her...

Casey weighed her odds, looking back into the house and seeing the man creep around, looking for her...then she looked at the rapidly approaching car lights.

Casey dropped to her knees and quickly crawled passed the big window.

She saw y/ns car pull up into the path leading to her house.

Casey felt a ping of hope ignite in her heart.

Casey stopped crawling and looked back into the window only to see the masked man staring right at her.

"Aha!" The man said behind the glass

Casey screamed as the man punched through the glass and grabbed Casey's wrist tightly.

Casey punched the man in the face with the phone, causing him to unhand her and once he did.. Casey ran.

Casey ran along the sides of her house.. Stopping once she saw Steves lifeless body.

Casey hated seeing her boyfriend lifeless with his organs spilling and hitting the floor with a gut wrenching wet sound.

Casey kept running before her body wouldn't let her.

She was so close...

So close..

But the man jumped from the window and tackled Casey down to the ground.

Casey cried and groaned before pushing the man off of her.

Casey started running again, her legs moving as fast as they would let her.. But he caught up to her and clasped his clothed hand around her mouth and stabbing Casey in the shoulder.

Casey's breath hitched as pain flew through her body. Blood oozed from the wound as pain worse then she could have imagined pulsed through her.

The man pushed Casey down with a laugh.

Casey's whined as her fingers touched the blood that poured from her shoulder she looked at the wound as her breathing came out in sharp gasps and ecstatic cries.

The man crouched down onto Casey's torso and pressed the knife teasingly agaisnt her neck as giggles erupted from him..but... Casey knocked the knife away and the man replaced his knife with his hand.

His lanky fingers clasped around her neck and squeezed her neck tightly, cutting off her air flow.

The man choked Casey till she lifted her leg and kneed him harshly off of her.

Casey gasped for air as she laid there and heard Y/n hop out of her car. Casey heard Y/n hum to herself as she walked.

Casey fought to get up and once she did she stumbled and gasped for air, she tried to call for Y/n but her vocal cords were damaged from all the screaming and crying.

Casey saw Y/n skip up to the door, dancing to herself and humming with a sway in her hips.

Casey called out to her but her voice was barely over a whisper.

Y/n walked up to the door and knocked and to her surprise..the door pushed open.

Y/n knitted her brows togeather and stepped inside.. Only to see smoke filling the air and windows smashed. "What the hell?!" Y/n said with a cough as her eyes started to water.

Casey fell to the ground the the man was instantly on top of her

Casey reached her hand up and pulled the mask off the man and looked into his eyes as he pushed the knife into her chest.

"Casey?!" Y/n screeched out as she walked into the kitchen and saw the popcorn was on fire.

Y/ns eyes went wide as she quickly yanked the popcorn off of the stove and quickly put it out.

"Casey?! CASEY?!" Y/n screamed as she kept rushing through the house, her fear and worry getting worse as she didn't see Casey nor Steve anywhere..

"WHERE ARE YOU?!" Y/n screamed out, goosebumps rising on her skin.

Y/n felt dread as she saw the patio door wide open.

Y/n quickly rushed out the patio door only to be met with the sight of Casey's boyfriend..

Y/ns hand flew up to her mouth as her throat tightened.. A feeling or dreed and guilt flooded her body..

She saw Steve sitting there.. Lifeless...

Y/n forced herself to look away and when she did...she saw Casey's body.. Handing from a tree with her stomach cut open and her organs showing.

Y/n felt her whole world crumble around her.. Her breath hitched in her throat and tears flooded her eyes.

Y/n felt so much guilt flush over her... Its her fault..

Y/n rushed over to the tree were Casey's body was hanging.

"CASEY NO! NO! NO CASEY!!" Y/n screamed out as she pulled Casey's down.

Y/n felt to the grass, cradling Casey's body in her arms. "No..no..no!" She repeated.

Y/ns hands became soaked with Casey's blood as her organs got on Y/ns bare legs.

Y/n cried hard... As she held Casey's body..

She couldn't let her go..

She didn't want to believe ber best friend was laying in her lap.. Gutted like a fish..

Y/ns looked at Casey's face and closed Casey's lifeless eyes with her bloody fingers.

"Im so sorry..im sorry its my fault.." Y/n screamed out, she screamed loud enough all of Woodsboro could have heard her....

Y/n was hyperventilating as tears poured down her cheeks and down her neck. Y/n let out cried and more crys even as she grabbes her phone from her pocket and dialed 911.......

If only she had gotten there sooner.....

The sober truth is that the most important civil rights battles were fought and won four decades before the Obama presidency. The black underclass continues to face many challenges, but they have to do with values and habits, not oppression from a manifestly unjust society. Blacks have become their own worst enemy, and liberal leaders do not help matters by blaming self-inflicted wounds on whites or "society." The notion that racism is holding back blacks as a group, or that better black outcomes cannot be expected until racism has been vanquished, is a dodge. And enouraging blacks to look to politicians to solve their problems does them a disservice. One lesson of the Obama presidency -- maybe the most important one for blacks -- is that having a black man in the Oval Office is less important than having one in the house.

Thomas Sowell is best known for his insights on racial controversies, but race isn’t the main topic of most of his books in a career that spans more than six decades. Mr. Sowell, 93, is an economist who earned a doctorate from the University of Chicago, where his professors included Milton Friedman, Friedrich Hayek and other future Nobel laureates. His specialty is the history of ideas, and his most recent book, “Social Justice Fallacies,” harks back to his writings on social theory and intellectual history, which include “Knowledge and Decisions” (1980), “The Vision of the Anointed” (1996) and “The Quest for Cosmic Justice” (1999).

In his 1987 classic, “A Conflict of Visions,” Mr. Sowell attempted to explain what drives our centuries-old ideological disputes about freedom, justice, equality and power. The contrasting “visions” in the title referred to the implicit assumptions that guide a person’s thinking. On one side you have the “constrained” vision, which sees humanity as hopelessly flawed. This view is encapsulated in Edmund Burke’s declaration that “we cannot change the nature of things and of men—but must act upon them as best we can” and in Immanuel Kant’s assertion that “from the crooked timber of humanity no truly straight thing can ever be made.”

The opposite is the “unconstrained,” or utopian, view of the human condition. It’s the belief that there are no inherent limits to what mankind can accomplish, so trade-offs are unnecessary. World peace is achievable. Social problems such as poverty, crime and racism can be not merely managed but eliminated. Mr. Sowell begins “Social Justice Fallacies” with a quote from Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who expressed the essence of the unconstrained vision when he wrote of “the equality which nature established among men and the inequality which they have instituted among themselves.”

Mr. Sowell has been a fellow at Stanford’s Hoover Institution since 1980. In a phone interview, he describes the central fallacy of social-justice advocacy as “the assumption that disparities are strange, and that in the normal course of events we would expect people to be pretty much randomly distributed in various occupations, income levels, institutions and so forth.”

He says that’s an assumption based on hope rather than experience or hard evidence. “We can read reams of social justice literature without encountering a single example of proportional representation of different groups in endeavors open to competition—in any country in the world today, or at any time over thousands of years of recorded history,” he writes in the book’s opening chapter on “equal chances fallacies.” He acknowledges that exploitation and discrimination exist and contributed to disparate outcomes. But he notes that “these vices are in fact among many influences that prevent different groups of people—whether classes, races or nations—from having equal, or even comparable, outcomes in economic terms or other terms.”

For Mr. Sowell, the tremendous variety of geographic, cultural and demographic differences among groups makes anything approximating an even distribution of preferences, habits and skills close to impossible. The progressive left holds up as a norm a state the world has never seen, and regards as an anomaly something seen in societies all over the world and down through history. “There’s this sort of mysticism that disparities must show that someone’s done something wrong” to a lagging group, Mr. Sowell says. The social-justice vision “starts off by reducing the search for causation to a search for blame. And for so much of what happens, there is no blame.”

To illustrate the point, the book’s chapter on racial fallacies cites recent census data on poverty. “Statistical differences between races are not automatically due to race—either in the sense of being caused by genetics or being a result of racial discrimination,” Mr. Sowell writes. Liberals argue that higher black poverty rates are mainly a product of slavery, Jim Crow and of lingering “systemic racism.” Yet there are pockets of the U.S. populated almost exclusively by white people who experience no racism and who nevertheless earn significantly less than blacks.

The book cites Clay and Owsley counties in Appalachian Kentucky, places “that are more than 90 percent white, where the median household income is not only less than half the median household income of white Americans in the country as a whole, but also thousands of dollars less than the median household income of black Americans in the country as a whole.”

It’s been true for some time, Mr. Sowell says, that black behavioral patterns play a bigger role in racial disparities than racism does. Black married couples have had poverty rates in the single digits for more than a quarter-century. And black married couples “in which both husband and wife were college-educated earned slightly more than white married couples where both husband and wife were college-educated.” He adds that in a landmark 1899 study of blacks in Philadelphia, the race scholar W.E.B. Du Bois “said that if white people were to lose their prejudices overnight, it would make very little difference to most black people. He said some few would get better positions than they have right now, but for the mass it would be pretty much the same.”

Noting today’s black-white wealth disparities, authors including Ta-Nehisi Coates, Nikole Hannah-Jones and Ibram X. Kendi have advocated reparations in the name of social justice. So have such prominent organizations as the NAACP and Black Lives Matter. Mr. Sowell can’t take their arguments seriously. “The situation of slavery in some ways is much like the situation of conquered people,” he says. “There’s no question whatsoever that conquered people have been treated in a terrible way. Being conquered by the Romans was not a fate you would wish on anyone. But the fact is that the net result has been that those parts of Europe conquered by the Romans have been the most advanced parts of Europe for centuries.

“Similarly, when someone black says . . . ‘I’m worse off because of slavery,’ there’s no way in hell you can say that with a straight face. If you’re going to base reparations on the difference between where blacks today would be if it were not for slavery, then blacks would have to pay reparations to white people.”

Mr. Sowell is no stranger to poverty, prejudice or discrimination. He was born in segregated North Carolina in 1930, orphaned as a toddler and raised in Harlem from age 9. He never finished high school and earned his GED after serving a stint in the Marines during the Korean War. The GI bill enabled him to enroll in college, first at historically black Howard University, before moving on to Harvard, Columbia and finally the University of Chicago.

He says that whether social-justice proponents are pushing for slavery reparations or higher taxes on the rich, their real agenda is the confiscation and redistribution of wealth. Enthralled by what he calls the “chess-pieces fallacy,” progressives treat individuals like inert objects. “I got that from Adam Smith, who had a very low opinion of abstract theorists who feel they can move around people much as one moves around chess pieces,” he says.

“That fallacy takes many forms, and taxation is a classic example.” The fallacy is assuming that “tax hikes and tax revenues automatically move in the same direction, when often they move in the opposite direction.” Liberals say, “ ‘We need more money, so we’ll make the wealthy pay their fair share,’ which is never defined, of course. But the wealthy are not just going to sit there and do nothing.”

A historical example is when “the British decided they would put a new tax on the American colonies. It turns out they not only didn’t get any more revenue, but they lost the tax revenue they had been getting.” In modern times, Mr. Sowell says, studies have shown repeatedly that people and businesses move their money to avoid high tax rates, and that includes migrating from states with higher levies to states with lower levies.

Although the social-justice vision isn’t new, Mr. Sowell observes that these ideas didn’t have much currency before the 20th century, in an era when intellectual elites mostly talked among themselves and reached a far smaller segment of the population. Mass communication changed that by greatly expanding their ability to shape public opinion and, by extension, government decisions: “One example was the period between the two world wars, when intellectuals managed to convince a lot of people that the way to avoid war was to avoid an arms race, and therefore that disarmament was the key to preserving peace.”

The growing influence and arrogance of the social-justice crowd bothers Mr. Sowell, which is one of the reasons he wrote the book. “Someone once said that people on the political left think that they would do what God would do if he were as well-informed as they are,” he says. He’s especially vexed by the quashing of dissent. “The fatal danger of our times today is a growing intolerance and suppression of opinions and evidence that differ from the prevailing ideologies that dominate institutions, ranging from the academic world to the corporate world, the media and government institutions,” he writes. “Many intellectuals with high accomplishments seem to assume that those accomplishments confer validity to their notions about a broad swath of issues ranging far beyond the scope of their accomplishments.”

Mr. Sowell’s own accomplishments cover a broad swath. He’s published more than 40 books, and “Social Justice Fallacies” is his sixth since he turned 80 in 2010. What recommends it is what recommends so many of the others: clear thinking, a straightforward prose style that combines wide learning with common sense, and an uncanny ability to take our preening elites down a notch.

Tigers Comeback To Beat Twins.

The Minnesota Twins picked up a big doubleheader sweep of the Tigers yesterday. The two teams closed out the series today in Detroit. The Twins got the scoring started in the second inning as Carlos Santana drew a one-out walk. Kyle Farmer singled and Eddie Julien walked to load up the bases. Ryan Jeffers knocked in a pair with a single to left and the Twins led by two after two innings of play. Christian Vazquez added on as he smacked a Jack Flaherty slider out to left for a solo homer. Minnesota extended their lead to three after four frames. Meanwhile, Bailey Ober was great through six shutout innings. The Tigers bats woke up in the eighth against the Twins bullpen. Javy Baez smoked a Caleb Thielbar curveball out to left for a solo homer. Carson Kelly reached on an infield single and Riley Greene lined a single to center. Mark Canha greeted Griffin Jax with a double to left, which scored two. Spencer Torkelson followed with a run-scoring single to right and the Tigers led 4-3. Jason Foley got in and out of trouble in the ninth and the Tigers picked up a come from behind win today.

-Final Thoughts-Bailey Ober was great today in his third outing. He threw six-plus shutout innings and gave up three hits with three strikeouts. Brock Stewart had a scoreless seventh and Caleb Thielbar had a rough return. He gave up three runs on three hits in 1/3 of an inning. Most of the hits he allowed weren't hit hard though. Griffin Jax allowed a run as he got out of the eighth. The Twins scattered six hits and went 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position. They left eight men on base. The Twins will head to Baltimore for a three-game series. Louie Varland will face Cole Irvin in Game 1 tomorrow night.
