Milestone Monday

On this day, May 20 in 1852, Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin was published in Boston by John P. Jewett. Its popularity was so great that the first edition went through many printings and sold 300,000 by the end of the year in the U.S. alone (1.5 million were sold in Britain in the first year). Jewett had presses in operation 24 hours a day to keep up with demand.

Our copy is one of the later printings for that year, the 285th thousand, and was published in one volume without the six full-page illustrations by Hammatt Billings engraved for the first printing. In late 1851, Jewett, along with partners Proctor and Worthington, formed a second publishing business in Cleveland, which took on the responsibility of selling Uncle Tom's Cabin in the west, which is reflected on the title page of our printing. Our particular printing was also issued later and bound with the 1853 A Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin.

We also hold the first illustrated edition of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, published by Jewett in 1853 with many illustrations by Billings engraved by Baker and Smith, and we show some of those illustrations here as well.

Rev. Josiah Henson and wife; Dresden ,Canada (c1907)

Josiah Henson (June 15, 1789 – May 5, 1883) was an author, abolitionist, and minister. Born into slavery in Charles County, Maryland, he escaped to Upper Canada (now Ontario) in 1830, and founded a settlement and laborer's school for other fugitive slaves at Dawn, near Dresden in Kent County. Henson's autobiography, The Life of Josiah Henson, Formerly a Slave, Now an Inhabitant of Canada, as Narrated by Himself (1849), is widely believed to have inspired the character of the fugitive slave, George Harris, in Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852), who returned to Kentucky for his wife and escaped across the Ohio River, eventually to Canada. Following the success of Stowe's novel, Henson issued an expanded version of his memoir in 1858, Truth Stranger Than Fiction. Father Henson's Story of His Own Life (published Boston: John P. Jewett & Company, 1858). Interest in his life continued, and nearly two decades later, his life story was updated and published as Uncle Tom's Story of His Life: An Autobiography of the Rev. Josiah Henson (1876).

Josiah Henson was born on a farm near Port Tobacco in Charles County, Maryland. When he was a boy, his father was punished for standing up to a slave owner, receiving one hundred lashes and having his right ear nailed to the whipping-post, and then cut off. His father was later sold to someone in Alabama. Following his family's master's death, young Josiah was separated from his mother, brothers, and sisters.His mother pleaded with her new owner Isaac Riley, Riley agreed to buy back Henson so she could at least have her youngest child with her; on condition he would work in the fields. Riley would not regret his decision, for Henson rose in his owners' esteem, and was eventually entrusted as the supervisor of his master's farm, located in Montgomery County, Maryland (in what is now North Bethesda). In 1825, Mr. Riley fell onto economic hardship and was sued by a brother in law. Desperate, he begged Henson (with tears in his eyes) to promise to help him. Duty bound, Henson agreed. Mr. R then told him that he needed to take his 18 slaves to his brother in Kentucky by foot. They arrived in Daviess County Kentucky in the middle of April 1825 at the plantation of Mr. Amos Riley. In September 1828 Henson returned to Maryland in an attempt to buy his freedom from Issac Riley.

He tried to buy his freedom by giving his master $350 which he had saved up, and a note promising a further $100. Originally Henson only needed to pay the extra $100 by note, Mr. Riley however, added an extra zero to the paper and changed the fee to $1000. Cheated of his money, Henson returned to Kentucky and then escaped to Kent County, U.C., in 1830, after learning he might be sold again. There he founded a settlement and laborer's school for other fugitive slaves at Dawn, Upper Canada. Henson crossed into Upper Canada via the Niagara River, with his wife Nancy and their four children. Upper Canada had become a refuge for slaves from the United States after 1793, when Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe passed "An Act to prevent further introduction of Slaves, and to limit the Term of Contracts for Servitude within this Province". The legislation did not immediately end slavery in the colony, but it did prevent the importation of slaves, meaning that any U.S. slave who set foot in what would eventually become Ontario, was free. By the time Henson arrived, others had already made Upper Canada home, including African Loyalists from the American Revolution, and refugees from the War of 1812.

Henson first worked farms near Fort Erie, then Waterloo, moving with friends to Colchester by 1834 to set up a African settlement on rented land. Through contacts and financial assistance there, he was able to purchase 200 acres (0.81 km2) in Dawn Township, in next-door Kent County, to realize his vision of a self-sufficient community. The Dawn Settlement eventually prospered, reaching a population of 500 at its height, and exporting black walnut lumber to the United States and Britain. Henson purchased an additional 200 acres (0.81 km2) next to the Settlement, where his family lived. Henson also became an active Methodist preacher, and spoke as an abolitionist on routes between Tennessee and Ontario. He also served in the Canadian army as a military officer, having led a African militia unit in the Rebellion of 1837. Though many residents of the Dawn Settlement returned to the United States after slavery was abolished there, Henson and his wife continued to live in Dawn for the rest of their lives. Henson died at the age of 93 in Dresden, on May 5, 1883.

“Molly Roe,” 21 (USA 1975)

The tragic case of a 21-year-old lupus patient (known here as Molly Roe) killed by legal abortion) was reviewed by The Massachusetts Medical Society’s Committee on Maternal Welfare. They ruled the doctor’s choice to perform an abortion to be a dangerous decision and an incorrect course of action given Molly’s condition.

First, the doctors of MMSCMW confirmed that abortion was more dangerous to Molly than the pregnancy was. The decision to abort was faulty to begin with.

Second, they disapproved of the highly risky saline abortion that had been used on Molly’s baby. Placing so much saline into the body of a woman whose renal function was already compromised was a very reckless choice.

Molly was 21 years old when she was admitted to the hospital in July of 1975. She was pregnant for the first time. It was rapidly determined that she was suffering from proteinuria, hematuria and hypertension, which led to the diagnosis of lupus nephritis.

Although some symptoms of her lupus were exacerbated by pregnancy, it would have safer for Molly to not have an abortion. Danger aside, she didn’t even want an abortion. For the first week of Molly’s hospitalization, doctors treated her lupus with less aggressive methods in an attempt not to harm her baby. Then they told Molly to undergo an abortion at 19 weeks pregnant.

The doctors at the unnamed Massachusetts hospital told Molly that the abortion was “safe and legal” and apparently claimed this would relieve Molly’s symptoms and allow them to treat the lupus more aggressively. Molly didn’t want to lose her baby, but she trusted these doctors with her life— and she and her baby paid the price for their malpractice. What she needed was healthcare, but she was pressured into abortion instead.

A saline abortion was begun by injecting a toxic concentration of saline fluid into Molly’s uterus. This was a common method of abortion at the time despite the high risk of maternal death. Since Molly’s kidneys were already struggling, having so much saline pumped into her system destroyed her last chances of survival.

Molly was killed by a dangerous abortion she never even wanted. She and her baby deserved better.

82d Divisão Aerotransportada - Breve História

A 82a Divisão foi constituída no Exército Nacional em 5 de agosto de 1917 para apoiar a entrada dos Estados Unidos na Primeira Guerra Mundial. Foi organizado em 25 de agosto de 1917 em Camp. Gordon, perto de Atlanta, Geórgia. Camp. Gordon não existe mais, mas uma placa comemorativa da 82d Divisão em Camp. Gordon está localizada no local, no Aeroporto Executivo de Peachtree. Durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial, muitas divisões dos EUA decidiram por um apelido para ajudar a construir esprit-de-corpos e um vínculo entre os homens. A 82a Divisão não foi diferente. 

O Comandante Geral, Brigadeiro-General W. P. Burnham, realizou um concurso em conjunto com os homens da Divisão, os cidadãos de Atlanta e o jornal georgiano de Atlanta. Milhares de sugestões foram derramadas no jornal, e foi até o governador Hugh Dorsey, BG Burnham e Major R.E. Beebe para peneirar todos eles e decidir qual entrada ganharia a honra de nomear uma das divisões de luta do Tio Sam.

A Divisão teve um grupo muito diversificado de homens treinando para se tornar uma unidade de combate. Muitos eram imigrantes que falavam pouco com nenhum inglês. Mas um facto surgiu, e a Sra. Vivienne Goodwyn viu isso imediatamente. Havia homens de cada um dos 48 estados da 82a Divisão, o que era único para a época. A maioria das divisões organizadas para a guerra abrangeu homens de três a cinco estados. - A Sra. Vivienne, como ficou conhecida, apresentou a seleção vencedora, Divisão "The All American". O remendo original da manga do ombro da Divisão de um quadrado vermelho com um círculo azul no meio logo teria soldados costurando um AA duplo no azul.

O 82d foi uma das primeiras sete divisões dos EUA a chegar à Inglaterra e lutar na França. A Divisão participou da Batalha de Lorena de 1918, e as campanhas de St. Mihiel e Meuse-Argonne 1918. O primeiro All American morto em combate foi o Capitão Jewett Williams, 326a Infantaria, na noite de 9 de junho de 1918. Dois americanos, LTC Emory J. Pike e o cabo Alvin C. York receberia a Medalha de Honra por suas ações em combate. O general John J. Pershing chamou o cabo York de um dos maiores soldados da guerra. O 82d foi desmobilizada em 27 de maio de 1919 em Camp Mills, Nova York, depois de voltar para casa da Primeira Guerra Mundial. Foi reconstituído nas Reservas Organizadas como Sede, 82d Division, em 24 de junho de 1921 e alojado no Edifício Federal em Columbia, Carolina do Sul.

Após o ataque japonês a Pearl Harbor, a Divisão foi redesignada em 13 de fevereiro de 1942 como Sede da Divisão, 82d Division. Foi ordenado a serviço ativo em 25 de março de 1942 em Camp Claiborne, Louisiana, sob o comando do general Omar Bradley. O Sargento (Promovido) Alvin C. York se dirigiu aos homens e os inspirou a continuar sua história e serviço da Primeira Guerra Mundial. O general Bradley iniciou um regime de treinamento rigoroso e físico, que foi realizado pelo próximo comandante, o major-general Matthew Bunker Rigdway.

 Em 15 de agosto de 1942, a Divisão foi reorganizada e designada Divisão Aérea 82d. dos Estados Unidos O Exército adotou e desenvolveu o conceito aerotransportado, e o 82d seria a primeira divisão dos EUA a receber essa designação. Maj. Gen. Ridgway lideraria a Divisão para o Norte da África em maio de 1943, onde treinou intensamente para o ataque aéreo na ilha da Sicília para a Operação HUSKY.

Em setembro de 1943, o general Mark Clark, Quinto Exército, solicitou que o Maj. Gen. Ridgway enviasse o 82d para cair na cabeça da praia de Salerno para ajudar a garantir a posição italiana estabelecida pelos Aliados. A Operação AVALANCHE, composta por dois saltos noturnos consecutivos, cumpriu a missão e eliminou qualquer dúvida que os Aliados seriam empurrados de volta para o mar. A Operação SHINGLE, um ataque marítimo do 504o Regimento de Infantaria de Paraquedas, deu aos Aliados mais uma posição na península italiana.

Enquanto o 504o ficou na Itália para lutar, o resto do 82o se dirigiu para a Inglaterra para se preparar e treinar para a Operação NEPTUNE, o ataque aéreo da Operação OVERLORD, a ofensiva aliada na Normandia, França. Acompanhado pelos 507o e 508o Regimento de Infantaria de paraquedas, o 82d atacou a Normandia com 12.000 tropas de Paraquedistas e Glider, 6 de junho de 1944. Sua missão era destruir pontes de abastecimento vitais da Alemanha e capturar estradas que levam para o interior através das áreas inundadas atrás das praias da Normandia, onde as forças marítimas desembarcariam para ganhar o controle das comunicações. O 82d lutou por 33 dias sem alívio ou substituições, e mais uma vez completou com sucesso a missão.

O ataque aéreo final para a 82a Divisão Aerotransportada durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial foi na Holanda em setembro de 1944. A Operação MARKET GARDEN faria com que os Americanos realizassem um salto diurno para Nijmegen. Liderado por seu novo comandante, o Brig. Gen. James M. Gavin, os objetivos do 82o era capturar e segurar as pontes-chave em Grave e Nijmegen, bem como algumas pontes subsidiárias sobre um canal a leste de Grave.

O 82d saltou e se reuniu com sucesso na ponte do rio Maas em Grave e garantiu a estrutura dentro de uma hora. Gavin liderou seus homens na luta e garantiu a aproximação da ponte em Nijmegen, o segundo maior ponto na Holanda e fortemente fortificado pelo inimigo. No dia seguinte, 200 homens do 82d realizaram uma travessia diurna do rio Waal em movimento rápido na tentativa de garantir a extremidade oposta da Ponte Nijmegen. A Segunda Guerra Mundial terminou em maio de 1945, e a 82a Divisão Aerotransportada receberia a honra do Dever de Ocupação em Berlim. É em Berlim, onde a Divisão recebeu seu segundo e mais famoso apelido, “Guarda de Honra da América” do General George S. Patton, depois de ter reencontrado os Paraquedistas. Quatro homens receberam a Medalha de Honra por suas ações durante a guerra, o soldado de primeira classe Charles N. DeGlopper, privado Joe Gandara, soldado John R. Towle e o primeiro sargento Leonard A. O Funk. Estima-se que entre mortos e feridos houve 9.073 homens durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Após a Segunda Guerra Mundial e no início dos anos 1960, a 82a Divisão Aerotransportada treinou duro durante a Guerra Fria para se tornar a Força de Reação Estratégica do país. Eles participaram de inúmeros e variados exercícios contendo até 60.000 homens, nos EUA, e treinados na Groenlândia, Alasca, América do Sul, Turquia e África. O poder e a coragem do 82d foram testados novamente.

DOWNTOWN URBAN ARTS FESTIVAL Celebrates Its Sweet 16

This year marks the Season Sweet 16 for the powerful Downtown Urban Arts Festival (DUAF).

The five-week art & culture showcase supplying audiences with live stage works, independent film, cutting-edge music and envelope-pushing poetry, will take up residence in some of lower Manhattan's most thrilling and celebrated spaces.

Running from April 7 through May 12, artists with their finger on the pulse of what the city is thinking will present their works at Theatre 80 St. Marks, Tribeca Film Center, New York Live Arts, Joe's Public at The Public Theater, and Nuyorican Poets Café.

The original theater series (Downtown Urban Theater Festival) was founded in 2001 for the purpose to build a repertoire of new American theater that echoes the true spirit of urban life and speaks to a new generation whose lives defy categorizing along conventional lines. That purpose has since been realized in more than 200 plays created and refined for the stage by more than 170 writers from America's burgeoning multicultural landscape. The addition of film and culture has made DUAF a marriage of the original Fringe Festival and Cannes.

DUAF is produced by Creative Ammo Inc. (CA), a nonprofit community development organization for artists focused on building stronger communities founded in 1998. CA has created solid programs to strengthen communities, foster creativity and celebrate life through art. Artists are an important leverage point in its work. Its mission is to cultivate vibrant communities by connecting artists with the skills and services they need to develop their talent into a marketable skill to pursue a career in the arts. Its programs are inclusive, open and embrace diverse ideas and art forms, and target communities of color and other underrepresented multicultural, women and LGBTQ populations.

This year, the opening night celebration will feature The Voice finalist and teenage sensation, Wé McDonald, who will perform live at Joe's Pub at The Public Theater.

DUAF's film series features the finest works from a search that yielded more than 1,400 submissions for around the world.

And finally, this year's poetry season, called WORDS MATTER, will be a community poetry slam and forum on current social issues. Local poets and audience members can recite their best poems and compete for a cash prize. 2016 Nuyorican Grand Slam Champion Jaime Lee Lewis is the host and special guests have included Lifetime Achievement American Book Award winner, Miguel Algarin.

Shared from @americancastles . The Sarah Orne Jewett House is a clapboard Georgian home located at 5 Portland Street in South Berwick, Maine. It was built in 1774 for merchant John Haggins. While the exterior is modest the interiors are more elaborate leading to speculation that Haggins did very well during the American Revolution. Haggins died in 1819 and Theodore Jewett and his family moved into the house at some point in the 1820s. In 1839 Jewett purchaed the house from Haggins' estate. Dr. Theodore H. Jewett, Jewett's son, moved into the house in 1848. His daughter, Sarah Orne Jewett, who would become an influencial author and practioner of American literary regionalism, was born in the house in 1849. In 1854 the family moved next door to what it now referred to as the Jewett-Eastman House and serves as the visitors center and exhibit space for the Sarah Orne Jewett House. Sarah and her sister Mary inherited their grandfather's house in 1887 and they lived there together, both remaining unmarried, until their deaths; Sarah in 1909 and Mary in 1930. Their sister Caroline lived in the house next door. Caroline's husband, Edwin Eastman, inherited the house upon Mary's death and donated it to the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, now Historic New England. It is a two story, woodframe house, five bays wide with a hipped roof. Three gabled dormers and the portico entrance were added in the late nineteenth century. Again, I was not lucky to be at the site while it was opened the the interiors are supposed to be beautiful. Can a Book Really Start a War?

16. Power of the Press

Little did Harriet Beecher Stowe know the impact she would have when she wrote “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” as a weekly serialized story in the abolitionist newspaper “The National Era.” When John P Jewett wanted to publish it in book form in 1852, she was skeptical if it would sell.  Ten years later, President Lincoln, upon meeting her for the first time, quipped, "So you're the little woman who wrote the book that made this great war." He may have been joking, but he’s not far from the truth. 

The impact this book had was incredible. Harriet Beecher Stowe had spoken directly with run-away slaves and her storylines had roots in first-hand accounts of slavery. Her book also showed that the unfair power balance of slavery allowed to masters being far crueler and commit atrocities they probably would not do in any other situation.  Slave owners really did not see slaves as “humans.” Dehumanization of others is part of a greater systematic conditioning because nations around the world have allowed it for centuries and some still do. By having sympathetic slave characters, she humanized them again.

Despite being banned in the South, the book sold over 300,000 copies in the North and even more in Great Britain. Public sympathy made it possible for Great Britain to cut its strong economic ties with the South.

Two foundational newspapers for women’s voices also came on the scene. “The Lily,” published from 1849-1853, was originally a temperance publication but since all issues touch on other ones, women’s rights had plenty of coverage. Amelia Bloomer was the editor for much of its duration.

In February of 1853, “The Una” took up where “The Lily” left off but the focus was solely on women’s rights. Published by Paulina Kellogg Wright Davis, the masthead stated it was “a paper devoted to the elevation of women.” Although it had only a two-year run and closed in October of 1855, it is considered to be the first feminist newspaper.
