Leverage technology for productivity | Fola Daniel Adelesi
One of the things that you need to understand is that technology was not meant to destroy us. So many myths are flying around about technology. There are so many people who are not interested in certain types of technology because they believe, on the basis of their religion, that it has to do with the antichrist and all sort of things that you hear on social media. You need to maximize…

John Deere's repair fake-out
Tumblr media
Last week, a seeming miracle came to pass: John Deere, the Big Ag monopolist that — along with Apple — has led the Axis of Evil that killed, delayed and sabotaged dozens of Right to Repair laws, sued for peace, announcing a Memorandum of Understanding with the American Farm Bureau Federation to make it easier for farmers to fix their own tractors:
https://www.fb.org/files/AFBF_John_Deere_MOU.pdf
This is a move that’s both badly needed and long overdue. Deere abuses copyright law to force farmers to pay for official repairs — even when the farmer does the repair. That’s possible thanks to a practice called VIN locking, in which engine parts come with DRM that prevents the tractor from recognizing them until they pay hundreds of dollars for a John Deere technician to come to their farm and type an unlock code into the tractor’s console:
https://doctorow.medium.com/about-those-kill-switched-ukrainian-tractors-bc93f471b9c8
Like all DRM, VIN locks are covered by Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), a 1998 law that criminalizes distributing tools to bypass “access controls,” even if you do so for a lawful purpose (say, to fix your own tractor using a part you paid for). Violations of DMCA 1201 carry a penalty of 5 years in prison and a $500k fine — for a first offense.
This means that Deere owners are locked into using Deere for repairs, which also means that if Deere decides something isn’t broken, a farmer can’t get it fixed. This is very bad news indeed, because John Deere tractors are just computers in a fancy, mobile case, and John Deere is incredibly bad at digital security:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/04/23/reputation-laundry/#deere-john
That’s scary stuff, because John Deere is a monopolist, and a successful attack on the always-connected, networked tractors and other equipment it supplies to the world’s farmers could endanger the global food supply.
Deere doesn’t want to make insecure tractors, but it also doesn’t want to be embarrassed by security researchers who point out that its security is defective. Because security researchers have to bypass Deere tractors’ locks to probe their security, Deere can leverage DMCA1201 into a veto over who gets to warn the public about the mistakes it made.
It’s not just security researchers that Deere gets to gag: the company uses its repair monopoly to threaten farmers who complain about its business practices, holding their million-dollar farm equipment hostage to their silence:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/05/31/dealers-choice/#be-a-shame-if-something-were-to-happen-to-it
This all adds up to what Jay Freeman calls “felony contempt of business model,” an abuse of copyright law that allows a monopolistic corporation to reach beyond its own walls and impose its will on it customers, critics and competitors:
https://locusmag.com/2020/09/cory-doctorow-ip/
If Deere was finally suing for peace in the Repair Wars, well, that was wonderful news indeed — as I said, a seeming miracle.
But — like all miracles — it was too good to be true.
The MOU that Deere and the Farm Bureau signed is full of poison pills, gotchas, fine-print and mendacity, as Lauren Goode documents in her Wired article, “Right-to-Repair Advocates Question John Deere’s New Promises”:
https://www.wired.com/story/right-to-repair-advocates-question-john-deeres-new-promises/
For starters, the MOU makes the Farm Bureau promise to end its advocacy for state Right to Repair bills, which would create a repair system governed by democratically accountable laws, not corporate fiat. Clearly, Deere has seen the writing on the wall, after the passage in 2002 of Right to Repair laws in New York and Colorado:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2022/06/when-drm-comes-your-wheelchair
These two bills broke the corporate anti-repair coalition’s winning streak, which saw dozens of state R2R bills defeated:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/05/26/nixing-the-fix/#r2r
Deere’s deal-with-the-devil is a cynical ploy to brake R2R’s momentum and ensure that any repairs are carried out on Deere’s terms. Now, about those terms…
Deere’s deal offers independent repair shops access to diagnostic tools and parts “on fair and reasonable terms,” a murky phrase that can mean whatever Deere decides it means. Crucially, the deal is silent on whether Deere will supply the tools needed to activate VIN locks, meaning that farmers will still be at Deere’s mercy when they effect their own repairs.
What’s more, the deal itself isn’t legally binding, and Deere can cancel it at any time. Once you dig past the headline, the Deere’s Damascene conversion to repair advocacy starts to look awfully superficial — and deceptive.
One person who wasn’t fooled is sick.codes, the hacker who has done the most important work on reverse-engineering Deere’s computer systems, culminating in last summer’s live, on-stage hack of a John Deere tractor at Defcon:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/08/15/deere-in-headlights/#doh-a-deere
Shortly after the announcement, Sick.codes tweeted how the fine-print in the MOU would have prevented him from doing the work he’s already done (including “a direct stab at me lol”):
https://twitter.com/sickcodes/status/1612484935495057409
As with other instances of monopolistic, corporate copyfraud — like, say, the deceptive Open Gaming License — the John Deere capitulation is really a bid to take away your rights, dressed up as a gift of more rights:
https://mostlysignssomeportents.tumblr.com/post/706163316598407168/good-riddance-to-the-open-gaming-license
[Image ID: Hieronymus Bosch's painting, 'The Conjurer.' The Conjuror's shell-game table holds a small John Deere tractor that the audience of yokels gawps at. One yokel is wearing a John Deere hat. The conjurer is holding a wrench.]

Alastor's Bloody Valentine; A Continuation
Here you go, folks - It's going to be a series. Now featuring a new pairing! Warnings remain the same. Sexual content, violence, gore. I'm trying my best to base this off of the Hazbin timeline.
And please be patient and bear with me. I'm a very busy PA student, and writing this is an escape for me
Thank you to those who commented and gave me the inspiration, and @kimkimmm2411 for being the driving force for a pt.2.
V Tower, Present Day
Vox groaned loudly with his teeth knashed, and clawed hands digging into the mattress of his spacious, king sized bed. The fabric easily gave way, leaving gouges in the foam surface. His hips began to stutter and lose rhythm as the tight, wet heat enveloping his cock squeezed him like a vice and became too mcuh. One more powerful thrusts, and he came with a roar, filling you with his seed. Your finely manicured nails clung to Vox and gouged into the bare flesh of his back. Angry red marks were left in your wake, with blood beading from the jagged scrapes. Vox never minded, and wore the marks proudly. To Vox you were a trophy, and he cherished you, and worshipped the very ground you walked on.
The moment Vox had discovered you and Alastor had once been affiliated, and that you were seeking your own revenge, he pursued your alliance. You and Vox shared the same immense hate for the Radio Demon and vowed to bring an end to him together. Alastor was a powerful Overlord, but you proved to be a rare threat to Alastor. You did afterall, harness the same power as Alastor, making you a very dangerous enemy and one that could very well kill him. Not to mention that you knew all of Alastor’s strength and weaknesses from your past lives. Vox had nearly short-circuited when you shared with him that juicy detail.
An attack on Alastor had been planned, but fate had waylaid that opportunity for you and Vox. Leaving you weakened, and with a new vulnerability of your own. Your priorities shifted, and Alastor had seemingly vanished, and had yet to return. In his absence the relationship between you and Vox and grown into more than just an alliance, and Vox found himself raising the Radio Demon’s child. That gave Vox a unique leverage over Alastor. One that he hoped to exploit if the coward ever showed his face again.
“Don’t forget I’m going to see Rosie today.”
You and Vox had reluctantly separated to get ready for the day. He now dressed in his trademark suit, while you sat at your vanity still getting ready.
“Right, I’ll have the car ready for you,” Vox stood behind you and placed his hands on your shoulders and have them a light squeeze. “Though, you know I’m not exactly a fan of your friendship with that cannibal.”
Even though Vox was ahead of the times, and up to date on all of the latest trends, you were not. Technology was not your strong suit, and you preferred the simpler thing. You found comfort in book as opposed to those pesky phones whose blue-light gave you a headache. It was very ironic, considering that you were dating the living embodiment of the technology you despised. That little flaw, as Vox called it, took him years to look past. He still tried to coax you towards the digital age, but you were frustratingly steadfast in your old-fashioned preferences. He was just thankful that your taste in fashion had evolved thanks to Velvette.
“Rosie is darling, Vox, and I don’t need the car,” you brushed his hands off and fixed your hair into an updo. “Arthur and I will walk. If you didn’t have anything planned for him, that is?”
Arthur wasn’t Vox’s biological son, but it had surprised you how quickly Vox had stepped into the role as father figure for the boy. It had been a shock for both of you when the pregnancy had been found out. Vox, however, raised Arthur as if he were his own. Providing him with a happy childhood, and the finest education hell had to offer. Thanks to Vox, Arthur had the tools to succeed in all aslpects of his life, and was currently pursuing his own weapons business that would undermine Carmilla Carmine. Risky business, that left you anxious of the target on your son’s back. Vox seemed to even be concerned over Arthur’s safety in the matter.
Vox flashed you a charming grin and leaned down to claim your lips in a brief, heated kiss. “I feel better knowing that he’ll be with you.”
You hummed and gazed up into Vox’s crimson eyes. “Don’t kill anyone while I’m gone.”
“No promises!” Vox laughed. “Enjoy your day out, Doll,” he said, and rushed out the door.
-*-*-*-
You and Arthur walked to cannibal town in comfortable silence with your arm in his. The man trumped you in height - nearly as tall as Vox now. It seemed, however, that he looked more and more like his father each day. He and Alastor bore a striking resemblance as both were stags, but Arthur had brunette hair and green eyes. Their personalities were polar opposites though, as Arthur never smiled unless he was in the company of people he knew and were close to. Otherwise, he was composed and stoic.
There were some moments when Arthur would glance at you or offer you a slight smile and you could swear he were Alastor. Anger would build inside you, but would quickly dissipate, leaving you feeling guilty. Your ange lied with Alastor, and Alastor alone. Never would you blame your son for something he had no control over.
Upon arriving at Rosie’s emporium, the woman had made a comment about how similar Alastor and Arthur’s looks were, but you brushed it off. Rosie had the best intentions in mind, but she wasn’t someone to sugarcoat things.
“And how’s the business coming along,” Rosie grinned and poured Arthur a cup of tea. She often enjoyed teasing, and sometimes flirting with Arthur.
Arthur quirked a brow and murmured a thank you before bringing the cup up to his thin lips. “Slow, as my mother and Vox are trying to undermine my progress.”
“Arthur,” you warned. “We just want you to understand what you’re getting yourself into.”
Rosie nodded and took her seat beside Arthur. Her dainty hand covered his own and gave it a reassuring squeeze. “Parents will always worry, but I think it’s wonderful what you’re doing! Perhaps you and Carmilla could work together one day.”
“How optimistic,” Arthur scoffed. The man put his cup down on the saucer and crossed his legs. He folded his hands and rested them in his lap and turned his attention to Rosie, seeming to study her intently with his green eyes. “Mother is convinced I’ll be a target.”
“She has reason to worry! What, with Alastor being back and all.”
“I’m sorry,” you blinked and glared over at Rosie. “He’s…back,” your teeth grit, and the room suddenly darkened, and your shadow manifested with it’s jagged teeth bared. “When?”
“Oh, darling, you must have missed the whole snafu over the radio while you were on your way over! I thought for sure you would have known by now.”

The monetization creep has been evident for a while. Reddit has added a subscription ”Reddit premium”; offered “community rewards” as a paid super-vote ; embraced an NFT marketplace; changed the site's design for one with more recommended content; and started nudging users toward the official mobile app. The site has also been adding more restrictions to uploading and viewing “not safe for work” (NSFW) content. All this, while community requests for improvements to moderation tools and accessibility features have gone unaddressed on mobile, driving many users to third-party applications. Perhaps the worst development was announced on April 18th, when Reddit announced changes to its Data API would be starting on July 1st, including new “premium access” pricing for users of the API. While this wouldn’t affect projects on the free tier, such as moderator bots or tools used by researchers, the new pricing seems to be an existential threat to third-party applications for the site. It also bears a striking resemblance to a similar bad decision Twitter made this year under Elon Musk.
[...]
Details about Reddit’s API-specific costs were not shared, but it is worth noting that an API request is commonly no more burdensome to a server than an HTML request, i.e. visiting or scraping a web page. Having an API just makes it easier for developers to maintain their automated requests. It is true that most third-party apps tend to not show Reddit’s advertisements, and AI developers may make heavy use of the API for training data, but these applications could still (with more effort) access the same information over HTML. The heart of this fight is for what Reddit’s CEO calls their “valuable corpus of data,” i.e. the user-made content on the company’s servers, and for who gets live off this digital commons. While Reddit provides essential infrastructural support, these community developers and moderators make the site worth visiting, and any worthwhile content is the fruit of their volunteer labor. It’s this labor and worker solidarity which gives users unique leverage over the platform, in contrast to past backlash to other platforms.

New Business Marketing Tips And Tricks for Success
Starting a new business can be an exciting endeavor, but it also comes with its fair share of challenges, especially in the competitive landscape of today's market. Effective marketing is crucial for the success of any new venture. Here are four essential marketing tips and tricks to help your new business thrive.
Define Your Target Audience: Before diving into marketing efforts, it's essential to identify and understand your target audience. Define your ideal customer persona by considering demographics, interests, pain points, and buying behaviors. Conduct market research to gather valuable insights that will guide your marketing strategies. Tailoring your messages and campaigns to resonate with your target audience will significantly increase your chances of success.
Once you have a clear picture of your audience, choose the most suitable marketing channels to reach them effectively. Social media, email marketing, content marketing, and pay-per-click advertising are just a few options to consider. Your choice of channels should align with where your audience spends their time online.
Tumblr media
Create Compelling Content: Content marketing is a powerful tool for new businesses to establish their brand and build credibility. Develop high-quality, informative, and engaging content that addresses the needs and interests of your target audience. This content can take various forms, including blog posts, videos, infographics, and podcasts.
Consistency is key when it comes to content creation. Develop a content calendar to plan and schedule regular updates. Providing valuable content not only helps you connect with your audience but also boosts your search engine rankings, making it easier for potential customers to find you.
Tumblr media
Leverage Social Media: Social media platforms have become indispensable for marketing in today's digital age. Create profiles on relevant social media platforms and engage with your audience regularly. Share your content, interact with followers, and participate in industry-related discussions.
Paid advertising on social media can also be a cost-effective way to reach a broader audience. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn offer targeting options that allow you to reach users who match your ideal customer profile.
Tumblr media
Monitor and Adapt: Marketing is an ever-evolving field, and what works today may not work tomorrow. To stay ahead of the curve, regularly monitor the performance of your marketing efforts. Analyze key metrics such as website traffic, conversion rates, and return on investment (ROI). Use tools like Google Analytics and social media insights to gather data and insights.
Based on your findings, be prepared to adapt your strategies and tactics. If a particular marketing channel isn't delivering the expected results, reallocate your resources to more promising avenues. Stay up-to-date with industry trends and keep an eye on your competitors to ensure your marketing efforts remain relevant and competitive.
In conclusion, effective marketing is essential for the success of any new business. By defining your target audience, creating compelling content, leveraging social media, and continuously monitoring and adapting your strategies, you can position your new business for growth and long-term success in a competitive market. Remember that success may not come overnight, but with persistence and the right marketing approach, your new business can thrive.

ooooh i wanna know your thoughts on the phrase and meaning of “ipad children” 👀👀👀
unfortunately i think the meaning here is p clear. "ipad children" refers to the imagined cohort of children and teenagers who were, or are being, 'raised by ipads', ie, whom the speaker believes are not being parented 'properly' or 'enough' and have been 'trained' or allowed to 'over'-use internet-enabled devices instead. these children are imagined to be neurologically and psychologically inferior to others due to their pathologically high levels of digital engagement, and are often described as impulsive, entitled, undisciplined, emotionally or intellectually 'stunted', hyperactive, or simply ill-mannered. again, these traits are supposed to be the neurological and psychological result of exposure to too much digital technology at too young an age.
i've said before that certain tech panics use the language of degeneration theory and the logic of eugenics. this idea of "ipad children" as a neurobiologically inferior population is a particularly disturbing example of this trend to me. again, the fear here is that technology (internet access) is doing irreparable, biological damage to childrens' brains; that they will grow up 'undisciplined' and 'stunted' (read: disabled, stupid, and/or unfit to work). this entire framework is incredibly reactionary. treating certain children like they are biologically inferior and pathologically ill-behaved is not a new phenomenon, of course, but the "ipad children" idea reifies and intensifies such discourses. it's quite blatantly a narrative of social decline occurring via biological degeneracy, centred around a specific technology (touchscreen internet access) and imagined mode of engagement with that technology (unfettered allowance by the lazy or neglectful parent).
speaking of the parents: people who talk about "ipad children" will often claim to be criticising wealthy parents specifically, turning this into a kind of class critique of the imagined rich parent who has all the necessary resources to 'actively' parent their child, but is simply too 'lazy' or apathetic to do it, and relies on digital technology instead. however, even if we accept at face value these assertions about the intent of such discourses, it is quite clear that their consequences will fall most heavily on parents who in reality do not have the most resources and support. we see this already in the way that child welfare services will leverage accusations of neglect disproportionately against poor and immigrant parents who may need to work outside the home, and/or who may parent in ways (like via an extended family system) that western states consider inherently neglectful because unparseable by a bourgeois nuclear family model. ideas about neglectful parents also, unsurprisingly, fall most heavily on parents struggling with substance use issues, psychiatric diagnoses, disabilities, etc, whose children are then made vulnerable to traumatic separation and the infliction of violence in state facilities and foster homes. in the case of the "ipad children", it is simply not true that the only people who can afford such technology are the upper echelons, and i would hope it's clear why these might be tools that parents turn to by necessity in cases where they lack the support to have an adult continuously engaged with their children (again, ranging from circumstances like disability to working).
overall i find this entire framework to be a) a bad explanation of a social phenomenon that may or may not even exist and that, if it does, has many different and class-marked causes; and b) a deeply reactionary bio-psychological construction that is stepping closer to the territory of outright eugenics by the day. i don't need to think that all content on youtube kids is morally upstanding or edifying in order to point out that the way people are talking about the children who may watch such content is a) endangering these children and b) reifying ideas about the virtues of the nuclear family, 'intellect' as some objective biological phenomenon, and a supposed 'mental decline' and larger process of 'degeneration' that modern society and technology are feared to cause.

“ <This image is made by an AI, someone fed my works to it as data> About Ai
“ Ok, guys since I've been sharing about AI stuff recently and I have a lecture tomorrow to give, where there will be discussions about AI, I might as well lay some of it off here to share with you guys my thoughts at this period of time in AI development. Long read ahead.
I know I joke about things like quitting and retiring, but I'm not. No worries about that, thank you guys for messaging me and giving me kind words about it. My stance on AI is that it is definitely, at this point, inevitable. Sure, some companies are banning AIs in their creation process, but it is only a matter of time before AI can produce "ethical" art, just like how the issues with hands are almost gone in just a year or so, seeing there are less and fewer arguments about AI on public spaces, it will also be a matter of time when people will just accept AI and embrace it. What I am currently doing and what I encourage people to do, is to keep their heads dug in and improve their own skillset no matter what, no matter how fast the world is changing out there, focus on improving you as an individual, try to bulk up your leverage, be good at what you do and when the time comes you are able to wield AI as one of the many tools that have come before. There will definitely come a day when digital artists MUST work with AI art, and to prep for that day, we can only do what old masters have done before us, keep our heads held high, practice, and improve. But here's a fact: It's going to take twice if not more, effort and passion from this point onward, it's going to be hard to get your artwork out there and get your voice heard, rough ride ahead, but not unbearable, only the best survives and thrives, and this is the time where we have no choice but to absolutely be the best. Be prepared, arm yourself with skills and knowledge, don't stop learning, don't stop yearning for more! What you shouldn't do is sit still and watch it happen. I personally am not supportive of AI art because of its unethical process, but I am also not naive to hope for a future without it, because it is definitely here to stay. The best-case scenario is that everyone can adapt and thrive, but as history shows when it comes to technology, there will be a cost, and there will be casualties. I hope we as artists, can keep up the motivation to hone our crafts, so we can continue to inspire the generations after. So there's no point in hoping for a no AI future, it is already here, let's work for a peaceful scenario where we can both co-exist in peace. Otherwise, you may find me giving blowjobs to our AI overlords in a dark alley in 2046. “

talking about a role swap/somewhat darker au of original leverage with @asterlark & having an absolute ball in this bitch
parker (aka p@rk3r) as a hacker/architect of plans/manipulator of systems. in canon she's already a brilliant mathmatician, and the biggest change in this au is that rather than getting involved with getaway driving/car theft in upper elementary/middle school, she starts learning to code & hack. whether or not she continues her education past middle school, her learning is in her own hands & it's a choice she makes. she's still very isolated and singular, but somewhat less so than in canon—as a hacker, she's somewhat more able to find other people who are strange like her.
hardison as a grifter/fabricator/with some complimentary digital skills, though it's not what he specializes in. he goes by alec in this AU. much like this alternate parker, he just had slightly different formative experiences and landed on a different specialization—the people skills he mentioned learning going door to door with a foster family, his background in theater tech (is that canon?). creating a believable person out of nothing becomes the game for him, and a tool. he connects so well with others in canon, and that's the key unchanging piece here.
eliot as the thief. we see a bit of that with how he presents himself in the pilot as a retrieval specialist—but this eliot would have a big key difference from canon. he comes from a similar background of violence, but he got out before getting too involved with moreau. and that means he trusts his own judgement in a way he doesn't in canon. he trusts himself to discern others' trustworthiness and moral character. this is an eliot who can fight, but chooses not to—not just with guns. he looks, moves and behaves very differently in some ways, but is exactly the same in others. an equally high level of body control and awareness is required of both hitters and thieves, but with different ultimate goals/specifications—different form due to different function.
sophie is annie croy (of the beantown bailout job) in this au, and she's the hitter of the team. she's rougher around the edges, but equally as canny & insightful. she's very commanding; intimidating in the way the canon glimpse of annie croy is. she has canon hardison's grift difficulties as the team comes together—prone to overdoing it—in part because she knows she can just shoot her way out if things go sideways for her. she has none of eliot's qualms with killing, though.
in this AU, nate's not on the team. the treatment was approved for his son, but did not succeed, and he and maggie still divorce. in this AU there's no initiating event to drive nate's moral split from IYS, so there is no split, and one of the things he throws himself into in the aftermath is his work. but there's no one left he's close to who could keep him from crossing lines, the way we see him behave at his worst in canon. the nate of this AU is not a pleasant or good person.
in this AU, the team are somewhat less known to be lone wolves—they almost entirely work alone, but not entirely.
parker, alec and eliot get implicated, framed for the same job, when all of what they'd done was solo and none of them did the big crime that they're accused of. and it's a very out of control nate who's investigating the crime that occurred.
they team up in a just-this-once manner to escape the situation they're in, but when things get worse, they reach out to annie croy to join their crew. and the four of them click in a very unexpected way. they have fun together, and they kick ass. things come very down to the wire with nate, though they do succeed. there is no single mastermind, but the group works together in a much more equal way to plan, and it works.
tentatively, they make plans to work together again, & it settles into a more permanent group—one where they help people, much of the time, but sometimes they just do the ruining rich people's lives part without the "for the hyper specific benefit of individuals harmed by said rich people" part. nate is their biggest running villain.
sterling is the inside guy they have, when that's needed. he's the person nate's closest with at this point in time but nate is even acting in a way that's too much for sterling and it's enough to cause sterling to separate himself somewhat from IYS & occasionally work with the team. none of them still like him, but this time it's just because he's still an insufferable person even if they're in alignment.
ultimately, in this au, annie croy both kills nate & fucks maggie, and she's right for that. i support women's wrongs <3
