The smallest feline is a masterpiece
In a Sunday Times article on the history of cats in art, Kathryn Hughes attributes the above quote to Leonarda Da Vinci, who tried, but failed to sneak a cat into his painting of the Madonna and Child. They appear in his drawings but not in his finished paintings. Apparently it was too much to keep both cat and child still enough to paint.

Hughes reckons that cats weren't fully appreciated in the middle ages. But they do appear in church carvings. Here are two from my recent visit to Lichfield Cathedral and the beautiful Norman church of St Michael's and St Mary's, Melbourne, Derbyshire.

Other favourite cats in art include M.C. Escher's white cat; Reginald Brill's hilarious drawings of his black cat Nellie doing all sorts of unlikely things at the Little Hall, Lavenham and Duncan Grant's very grumpy cat at Charleston in Sussex.

"The Madonna and Child Jesus of Lichfield Cathedral" was painted from a photo I took of a section of stonework above the main doors of the cathedral.
A lovely friend's wedding in Surbiton in late August gave Steve and I the opportunity to stop in Lichfield on the way home. We'd been to the cathedral once before and had wanted to explore more fully. There was a "beach" in the cathedral square, with deck chairs and an ice cream outlet in a boat shaped kiosk. The local littlies' bucket and spade play was rather hampered by drizzle, but I appreciated the efforts made to make local children welcome.
The young Mary benignly gazes across at them, with a sadness in her eyes as she wonders at her child's fate. Her infant son provides a blessing, having curled two fingers down on his right hand so his raised digits indicate his part in the Trinity, one God in three persons. His two fingers pointing upwards represent his nature both human and divine as well as directing our attention towards the spiritual.
The sculptors knew their theology!
When I saw this small section of the huge stone cathedral front, I thought it would make a great subject for a more devotional Christmas card. So maybe I should call this ink and glass pen drawing an illustration, rather than art.
The A4 (21cm x 29.7cm) unframed original glass pen and ink piece (including walnut ink) is available for £75 including UK postage. Please just private message me to arrange your purchase.
It's also available in a mix of different types and sizes of prints, including greetings cards, and printed on all sorts of lovely things (like accessories, apparel, homewares, gift items, etc) at:

Part 2 of the Lichfield Cathedral and the fin part - I use the glass panels as the front runner because they look absolutely amazing. The colours are incredible. Have you ever been to Lichfield Cathedral…?
We visited at the end of August, and the beautiful Madonna and Child Jesus sculpture above the main front doors caught my attention.
