im so happy u love it and this means so much but i do NOT think he would be proud 😭 he would read my posts (gun to his head ofc he wouldnt just. do that.) and sit in silence for a few minutes and then he would say. childhood pre-Torture Labyrinth. he's born in 29 AC and was 8-ish when he was at the deathbed of Aegon1. aegon the uncrowned is three years older than him, and rhaena is six years older. jaehaerys is 5 years younger, alysanne is 7 years younger vaella who i kept alive is 10 years younger. just to give an idea of ages and general canon info :>
his only personality trait is Promising and Beloved of the commons. i think him and aegon were friends :) younger brother so he followed after him a lot. slightly scared of rhaena the big cool older sister who has a pet dragon. think his granddad is soooo cool doesnt really think about The Implications of conquest or anything. normal boy normal childhood (as normal as possible when ur siblings are married...) also he is gay because it adds to the horrors later on 🥰
something i think is Inchresting is the rhaena, aegon and viserys are named for rhaenys, aegon and visenya :3 i think viserys is like hercules right where he was named in an attempt to appease The Wife. aenys was like hiiiii auntie/stepmum visenya look i named a kid after you you dont wanna kill me right?right? and she looks at this kid who didnt claim a dragon isnt a girl isnt maegor and goes oh so youre insulting me huh.
i think rhaena aegon viserys had a slightly weird dynamic. rhaena the lesbian getting forcibly betrothed to her younger brother by her father is gonna make things weird, also aegon was 15 and rhaena 18 which adds just the best most awesome sauce to the mix. i think viserys had very complicated feelings on that especially if he is gay cos like... rhaena obviously does not love her brother romantically right. so u are a boy and ur sister is a lesbian but you dont have that word. and you are gay and your brother is cool and the crown prince and everyone is screwing their siblings and that makes your brain chemistry weird. and now your brother is marrying your gay sister. What about you. the dragon has three heads??? idk he's like 12 at this point he just goes back to playing hide and seek with jae+aly.
Uh oh daddy's dead. daddy's dead and uncle maegor is king now with his three wives. Uh oh. oh awesome he's kidnapped you and you're his squire now that's so cool. well its mostly a power play and hes not actually making u do anything as long as you stay locked in the red keep all day he leaves you alone. also maegor's insane girlfriend stares at you like you're a baby lamb that would make a delicious lamb tostada. but hey your big brother aegon has a dragon now and him and rhaena are gonna save you soon. Uh oh aegon's dead. aegon's dead and maegor is king for real for real.
everyone steers clear of you in the keep. you used to play with your siblings and the commoners and you used to play on dragonstone and kings landing and now no one wants to touch you. no one is calling you maegor's squire now, the pretence is gone. you are maegor's hostage. you fantasise about a different outcome, where maegor took you to the battle as his squire, and that you being there might have changed what happened. maybe you could have warned aegon. but you know nothing would have changed. youre not a dragonrider. you're worthless you're powerless. youre 14 years old :)
alys harroway is dead. maegor killed his wife. you knew alys, you saw her around the keep. she seemed very nice. she was very quiet and stayed in her rooms. she was always pregnant. you wonder why she married maegor, why she and tyanna are so strange with each other. you hear rumours. you wish you had talked to her. but she's dead now. maegor killed her. maegor tortured her. she's a whore now. you look out the window and see her rotting leg on a stake outside, her torso on another. you wish you had talked to her.
visenya targaryen the looming shadow over your life, the woman you're named after who looked at you with nothing but scorn, is dead. your mother is gone and she took jae and aly. what about you? what about you? is she not your mother too? are you not her little boy anymore? you are 15 years old. maegor killed alys' family when he was angry with her. is he going to kill you now?
ok second person pov over the gimmick is getting lame. anyway this is where the AU deviates: instead of viserys dying of torture, maegor is like hey maybe my nephew will be more fertile than my BITCH wives. and visenya the blood witch before her death compiled a bunch of old valyrian a/b/o fanfiction and said son if you ever find yourself with infertile wives. Consult These Texts. then tyanna and maegor made viserys mpreggable i dont care about how or like. what his body looks like. im not into the fetish of omegaverse LMAO i dont want to think about the fertilisation or birthing process or what organs he has thats unnecessary. only thing thats important is viserys can incubate babies and they are birthed via c-section :3
quick lore dump: vis is forced to maegor -> rhaena crashes the wedding but vis is so broken at this point he just doesnt want anyone else to die and has resigned himself to maegor so rhaena reluctantly surrenders -> alyssa jae and aly DO go to the red keep after they find out about the wedding and jae dies fighting maegor which makes viserys fully break -> alyssa now has husband dead 2 kids dead her son is queen and she also loses her fight :( lives on dragonstone with alive vaella -> alysanne is given to the faith -> rhaena agrees to a truce and she is hand of the king now and viserys' main protector -> vis gets pregnant and the kid is basically a reincarnation of jaehaerys -> tyanna loses her shit and tries to murder/sterilise/whatever viserys so maegor kills her cos he's finally got his babymaker -> vis has a daughter who's the reincarnation of tyanna -> faith uprising, shut down -> vis has his second daughter final child daenys who's birth is heralded by the martyrdom of poxy jeyne poor in the quashed faith uprising
vis is in the torture labyrinth for a couple decades. life sucks husband sucks everyone is weird about him. very death in venice people are weird about the boy type deal. has to wade through gender and sexuality politics of westeros which means several men going utterly insane about him including a couple kingsguard knights (celibate hypermasculine freaks bound to be insane sexually). one point early-ish on he DOES start believing this one kingsguard knight will save him from The Hells The Horrors but maegor finds out and kills that guy adn sexually humiliates viserys in front of the kingsguard and makes their son watch. So that fucks up vis' psyche for a while :3
rhaena and alysanne try to convince him to rebel and run away that they will use their dragons and fight. but maegor has made vis so paranoid and crazy he thinks maegor knows everything knows all his thoughts so he's terrified of plotting escape cos he thinks maegor will kill everyone. plus maegor made sure to force kids onto him early so that vis wouldnt be able to leave :3 world's most evil babytrap of all time.
vis doesnt interact with anyone except rhaena aly maegor his kids and the kingsguard so yeah its bad for him. ceryse hangs around for a while but shes like yeah i dont want any part of this shit dude being queen is NAWT worth it and she goes back to the hightower to plot marrying her niece off to maegor's son.
also there's a curse on the kingsguard all of them die really horribly and early. its a fun little thing for me personally because in f&b maegor's kinsguard is cartoonishly bad and jae's is cartoonishly perfect so i though Hey what if we did a little curse on the kingsguard ey. that would be fun. the only guy who stays long is a bracken because brackenfail cancels out knightfail. he's all godly and pissy about the gay marriage thing but he's also a monarchist so even though he think maegor is satan he's like well. he is my king i must serve him i obey my vows. he thinks viserys is a freak of nature but slowly grows to respect him and helps kill maegor + takes the fall for it. they have a weird father figure/white knight/weird tension thing that never gets consummated yay ^_^ the maegor torture labyrinth will have you 21 years old and best friends with a 50 year old celibate knight like dang where tf ser bracken at today 🥹
viserys snaps in 66AC with no like big catalyst or anything. he just has a good day where he's mostly lucid and he's angry and he's tired of everything and he's sick of maegor and he wants freedom he wants to be free. he wants to breath the air without panicking that maegor is going to hurt him. and maegor says some disgusting comment to him while theyre alone in the throne room and vis just snaps and start fighting him. daenys shows up cos she had her own Visions and Voices and they just start whaling on him. bracken knight helps too he takes most of maegor's counter attacks his organs are all over the floor but maegor dies impaled on the throne YAY
vis is like. A bit better for a while. his son is now king and vis is seeing that oh it doesnt get better does it people will still die. also his son jae has this weird oedipus complex about him thanks to maegor's insane parenting and viserys is fully aware of that so its not fun times for him. jae and daenys try to make him better try to invent therapy but its the middle ages they dont have that yet. they finally send him off to harrenhal (BAD IDEA) because they think viserra (the elder daughter btw, the tyanna one) might be able to cure him with her weird witchcraft. they think she's insane too but its the last option... viserra thinks vis is lame and weak but she does love him in ehr own way or maybe just pities him. anyway she does her best and it works for a while but viserys sorta gives up cos the depression is too much. and viserra believes in euthanasia as a mercy and thinks this is best for him this will let him be at peace. daenys has a premonition about it and tries to stop him. she has a big blowout fight with jae about it too and curses his bloodline and prophesises the long night. burned the red keep a little bit, you know how it is.
blah blah blah anyway daenys and vis end up dying in the gods eye together in a murder/suicide suicide/suicide murder/murder whatever. viserra has the lake dragged and they're found holding each other like a mother and her fetus :3

An unpopular opinion: I don’t think Sara and Midori have many parallels. What’s far more prevalent and interesting to me is Sara’s utility to Midori as another source of entertainment similar to Shin. He wants to bring out her ruthless nature because it intrigues him, and he will hurt people around her for the sake of it, and yet he’s uninterested in treating her like an equal despite talking like she is.
A random thought: The fact Nankidai never finished the sketches for that High School AU bothers me like hell

Character I feel the writers screwed over: tbh I think the emotion route does Kanna sooooooo dirty. Like first of all she doesn’t even react to Shins death. Like she just tried to stick up for his life and failed. He died. She’s losing another sibling. But apparently she’s better now. In an instant she has gone from wanting to die at the alter to saying that she’s learned sacrifice is something you should never do. Everything is A-Okay. This is the good route. It makes this feel like Nankidai didn’t care about writing her, and that she’s just a pawn to develop Shin and this was a fun bonus. Like that’s the last thing you would want. At least show her change! Or hell, maybe you should show her final parting with Shin!
Favorite friendship: I really care about Sara and Keiji’s relationship. Guy who kills people and the weird lesbian kid who he is not qualified to care for but he does is literally the trope ever.
Character I most identify with: Sara. I have issues.

book recs 8, 31, 37, 62, 69, 122 👀
8. a book you finished in one sitting
It's a novella, so obvi it's a little easier, but What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher. It came out recently, and it's a retelling of The Fall of the House of Usher. I totally fucked up my sleep schedule for this one, it's sooo good. Very spooky, cool gender stuff and worldbuilding. Seriously, I would read so much more stuff written in the same world as this book. Also: cool mushrooms and a cool lady mycologist!
31. a book that mentions a name in the title
Okay so originally I was gonna say this for #8 because this was also a one-sitting book, but then I realized I could sneak it in here instead--Kaikeyi by Vaishnavi Patel. This is a mythological retelling, of a mythology that I'm pretty much completely unfamiliar with! Very cool magic system, love the depiction of the gods as people who don't really have the same goals as humans, love the twisty politics. Awesome main character.
37. your favourite heist book
Okay so I want to say The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner--or really, any of the QT books, I think you could argue for all of them to count. However, I talk about those constantly, so I'm also going to say Provenance by Ann Leckie to change it up. You've all heard me talk about QT a billion times, but Provenance is amazing! I find the main character super endearing--very anxious, very in over her head. Ann Leckie always knocks it out of the park with worldbuilding, esp. social elements. The aliens are really cool in this one. This is a standalone in the same world as the Imperial Radch books, but you can totally read it without reading those--and in fact it would be really interesting to read in that order!
62. a book with a forgettable plot but amazing characters
Uh, this is all books for me, because I am forgetful and prone to skimming. (I would love to be able to switch it off when needed but literally can't.) I'm just looking at my high-but-not-five-stars reviews on The StoryGraph. Ooh, how about Aspects by John M. Ford? It's unfinished, so it's esp. hard to remember the plot, because there's no resolution. (The author died. In the version I read, there's a foreword from Neil Gaiman that made me WEEP.) However, I found the characters SUPER interesting, especially the romance subplot, which is something that can be hit or miss for me.
69. your favourite mythological retelling
Nice. The Witch's Heart by Genevieve Gornichec is a Norse mythology retelling about an often-overlooked female character. Okay I gotta do a few for this--I went and looked up mythology retelling lists to jog my memory and there were too many good ones. Sword Stone Table by Swapna Krishna and Jenn Northington is an anthology of Arthurian retellings. The one with Merlin time traveling to the 1980s and the one with the little Native American boy both WRECKED ME. SOBBING. Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia started slow but turned out to be great, and I found the setting so interesting! WAIT HOW CAN I FORGET A CHILDHOOD FAVE Goddess of Yesterday by Caroline B. Cooney has shaped so much of my taste in books/my own writing. It's set just before and then in the early days of the Trojan war and follows a young woman who goes through HORRIBLE things and then accidentally scams her way into Troy. Extremely cool god stuff, love how Medusa is handled. Okay okay one more: The Mere Wife by Maria Dahvana Headley is a modern retelling of Beowulf, where Grendel's mother is a woman of color who's recently left the military, and the real villain was white suburbia all along.
122. your favourite winter read
I don't really do seasonal reads, but I definitely like to hole up in the winter with various series I find comforting. Examples would be Connie Willis's Oxford Time Travel books or the Machineries of Empire series by Yoon Ha Lee. (Yes I'm probably a little sick in the head for the latter to be a comfort read. It's whatever.)

(and all of sharons is with women because she was like ill do an honor system thing and also nobody is as handsome as my husband).

i dont know if tumblr is a website that will crack down on me for the things i want to mention here but just know that i find faust and slayers relationship very interesting, as well as slayers interaction with and control over his general environment as a whole.
"you wouldnt happen to be single, would you?" doubles as an answer for the next question, as well, so of course im mentioning day 19 - decapitation! there is also "got my husband to try sleepytime tea with me and he immediately started trying to kill himself" (very tender despite my descriptor of it).

i have the chance to say many things here. but is there a non-insane explanation for his xrd winquote against faust being "Early afternoon / I wait for the sun to set / And for my breakfast."
to be fair slayer IS like full-tilt insane against half the cast ("I wonder if we might find a few thousand vacant square kilometres nearby… I would very much like a TRUE contest of strength between us." to sol, for example) but like. my god. im smitten or whatever every word that comes out of his mouth is batshit.

jokes (and faust) aside, while im not gonna say i ""like"" it all the time when hes talking to the other assassins (king youve GOTTA stop being rude to venom; its not his fault he was molded by what became of the guild after you left it lol.), its at least always interesting. the same for when hes talking to other "higher-ups", so to speak. i would LOVE to see more of him and leo talking! no reason.
also gabriel because those motherfuckers are Divorced. on mild terms.

guy who seems like he would love the IDEA of the beach, at the very least. dont know how hed feel about sand, but the idea of a location that is always moving, hasnt been fully discovered, and preserves so much of the past whilst promising so much of the future seems like a huge slayer thing. also lots of skin there.

Personal Pride Stuff!
Since it's pride month I'd figure I'd share some headcanons and scenarios regarding my ships!
All my s/is are bi/panromantic and asexual since that is what I am in real life!
I can see all my f/os as AT LEAST bi since they don't get definitive canon sexualities
No matter what the AU or verse, my s/i is lucky enough to meet the equivalent of my IRL girlfriend some point. (This is cause my girlfriend is always sweet enough to let me talk her ear off about my f/os sources and stuff and if you chat with me for a bit I always bring up my girlfriend in someway 'cause she's awesome sooo of course the two would overlap in other verses)
With that said, there's always an instance of "This is my wife Rebecca, and she also has a girlfriend!" No matter the verse
My s/is were more nervous about coming out as ace to her f/os than she was saying she's bi/pan. But, of course, all parties are cool and accepting of this.
With that being said, the f/o who learned the most of my s/i coming out was Kaito. He wasn't ignorant, but he was older, and in Japan, such things weren't really discussed in adulthood.
The conversation they shared was rather sweet 'cause Kaito heard me venting to my friend after getting unsolicited pics... So he wanted a better understanding. (Also he was pissed that some loser was harassing his girl so when he then learned that doing so was crossing my boundaries more......... he was PISSED to say the least)
My s/i explained the general term of asexuality and then explained that in her case, she has experienced feelings of attraction like that but due to her past experiences and her conditions even the thought of doing something with someone she loves, trusts, and knows would never hurt her gives her too much fear and anxiety to ever really want to. So since she doesn't desire anything sexual that's why she identifies as ace.
All my f/os completely accepted and supported this decision since they love me and my well-being is what matters!
Cue a line of questioning like: "Really, no 'just try it with me?' 'I'm different 'I'll wait till you're ready??" When my f/os just shook their head, affirming it was my choice and they respect that, wide-eyed relief and a dramatic sigh of happiness escapes the lips of my s/is
My s/is will still openly discuss 'saucy topics' as if it's nothing and totally make the occasional 'out-of-the-closet' joke when the time and mood is right.
Not to mention they'll dress in a way that's considered 'sexy' because they want to, and even pull out 'alluring' aspects of her personality should the moment need it but it's all nothing but an act to her and she likes to perform!
When I came out as ace to Gladio, 2 things happened: I told him I could appreciate the aesthetics of his ass instead of thirsting over it, this earned her a bewildered look before she heard a hearty laugh. The second part of the convo was Gladio feeling an unknown sense of relief since he's had a lot of women just want him sexually and while he may have liked hook-ups in the past, he's happy that the woman he loves, loves him for more than just that.
ALL MY F/OS AND MY S/IS RESPECT TRANS RIGHTS, ARO/ACE RIGHTS, NONBINARY RIGHTS, AND WOULD DO EVERYTHING THEY COULD TO UPHOLD THOSE VALUES!

just finished the umbrella academy s3 and holy shit I loved it
some chaotic thoughts right after finishing it:
tbh it started kinda slow, the first two-three episodes didn't really grip me lol but the rest was fantastic as always haha
Luther was much more enjoyable than before - and I am sooo happy he's back from the dead lmao
Allison pissed me off soooo much omg she was much more annoying and unlikable this season, I know that she went through a lot, but honestly her storyline was boring sns - by the end I couldn't stand her, I wasn't sure if I'd be able to finish the season tbh haha - she was so annoying I couldn't even feel bad for her sns (and it's lowkey unfair that she got everything she wanted in the end, but yeah, I know, she made a deal 🙄🙄)
actually loved Lila - and her and Diego together - Diego is one of my faves since day one, I love him, and Lila was really fun this season too, and I enjoyed their subplot sooo much, loved them hah
and I love Sloane so much (and she's like the hottest character in that whole show sns) - now where is she and pls tell me she's gonna be in s4 because I love her (if there is a season 4 and there better be haha)
the wedding was so adorable, I loved it, and I honestly love Luther and Sloane together, they seem so perfect together hahaha the chemistry between the actors is fantastic
Five was amazing as always, Aidan Gallagher does such a good job, I've been continuously so impressed since season 1, he's amazing
I missed the og Ben a lot - tho I learned to enjoy sparrow Ben as the season went on hah he was pretty cool by the end - and it was great to see him interact with everyone, not only Klaus lol
and I enjoyed the Sparrows in general tbh, shame some of them died hah
and Reggie was actually so fun to watch 😂 (he's a good villain, I hate him but he's so enjoyable haha)
I feel like Viktor didn't really have much to do? like, there was Harlan, and then the whole thing with Allison but like, I didn't really care much about that? he didn't really have his own subplot that would grip me like everyone else I guess (or at least it feels like it idk, nothing with him really caught my attention, maybe because of Allison being overly annoying hah) - still loved Elliot Page as always, he's awesome as always
and obvi Klaus is Klaus 😂 I love that he got to explore his powers, and he's always super enjoyable, he's the goat lol
so, the plot was interesting, but, like I said, I feel like it really picked up with eps 4 or something, but once I got into it, it was amazing (aside from Allison who made me wanna stop watching multiple times, god was she annoying lol)
I'm so curious what's gonna happen next, with their powers gone, and Reggie's wife with him, and where the fuck is Sloane, and what's up with that Ben scene at the end??? the ending itself might be more intriguing than the whole season tbh 😂
I think I still enjoyed the previous seasons a bit more, but this was great, can't wait for s4 (and they better make one, I need answers haha)

Roundup #5 Albums of the Year III: Last Call
Ok, 2022 has officially ground to a halt and with it so has this list. This thing turned into way more work than I was expecting but whatever, it’s not like I had anything better to do.
As with previous installments these aren’t listed in any particular order.

Mizmor - Wit’s End - New mini-album of desolate blackened doom from the consistently awesome Mizmor. First track is an absolute crusher. Second track is an ambient/ ethereal drift. Both are fucking awesome.

GGU:LL - EX EST - This is probably nothing you haven't heard before, but man... When it's done right I'm still such a fucking sucker for the Times of Grace/ Through Silver in Blood side of the "post metal" spectrum and GGU:LL hit that mark with sniper precision.

Primitive Knot - Ur Metal - Throw Venom, Bathory, Godflesh, and Hawkwind in a blender and what comes out the other side is basically Primitive Knot.
Probably my favorite band on earth right now even if I'm a slightly jealous that I didn't think of it first.

Cromlech - Questionable Strategies - Primitive Knot side project with the mixture skewed slightly toward the Godflesh side of what they do.

Skuul - The Status of Machines/ New Amerika - Another satellite project orbiting the dark planet that is Primitive Knot... Skuul seem to channel the later Damon Edge era Chrome stuff through industrial and metal in a way that brings me right back to being a Wax Trax/ Invisible Records obsessed teenager.

Locrian - New Catastrophism - The planet is dying and this is its requiem mass.

Dalek - Precipice - I've never felt qualified to "review" hip hop but I've been a Dalek fan for ages and I love this new record.

Raid - Parallels - Straight up baffling combo of noisy lo-fi shoegaze and brutal metallic hardcore that has grown on me steadily since I first checked it out a couple months ago. I initially described this project as sounding like they're toeing the line between suicide and murder and that's still the best description I can come up with.
Sounds like your wife texting to tell you she's leaving you while you're stuck in traffic in the pouring rain.

Axioma - Sepsis - Their first album wed swirling blackened riffage to heaving dark dissonance in a way that reminded me of both Cattlepress and Deathspell Omega and this new one continues in that vein so it gets a thumbs up from me... I'm bummed there's not a CD Version of this.

Petbrick - Liminal - Electronically augmented noiserock featuring Iggor from Sepultura on drums. The track with Jacob Bannon on vox is legitimately what I wish parts of my band sounded like which is weird because I'm not usually the biggest Converge fan, but christ what a psychotic mess that track is.

Soulfly - Totem - Sepultura were one of the bands that got me into metal and I've been a Soulfly fan since their first album. Feel like Totem ups the amount of tribal drumming over the past couple albums which is cool.

Amon Amarth - The Great Heathen Army - Awesome from front to back but the track with the dude from Saxon on vox puts it over the top for me.

Diamanda Galas - Broken Gargoyles - Damaging return to form (or at least a return to a form I enjoy more than her jazz/ blues influenced stuff) from the absolute queen of vocal chords as weapon of mass destruction.

Well, yes, Kira going off to train and never returning was just weird… Same with Cora leaving and never coming back… Derek leaving to find her later on and only returning at the very end to save the kids’ asses… Isaac leaving with Chris for France and never being mentioned again, even when Chris returned… Peter… And whatever the hell happened to Deaton?🙈😅🤦🏻♀️ And haha, yess😍 (Oh gawd…Poor Allison😖🙈) …Yeah, it’s probably because Chris is tragic AF that you like him, like, he had to kill his wife, his father is a maniac who also died, his daughter was murdered… He literally lost EVERYTHING😅🙈 Plus, he’s badass, what’s not to like😉😂 (You know what would be cool? A show about Chris, Melissa, The Sherrif, Derek, Peter, etc! The grown-ups were soooo wasted, like Deucalion!)

I think I had a some kind of idea about s2 going more or less as in the show, but karamel not getting together, because Mon-El not feeling it would be right, but still being in love with Kara. Rhea coming, revealing his identity, Kara still being pissed off, them arguing, feelings hurt, kaboom! etc, and then him sacrificing hinmself for Superfriends escaping the Daxamite ship (having a fake lead bomb or something), Bel-Seg arriving to DEO and helping them making a plan to save his ass, but shit going wrong, Mon getting hurt and ending unconcious for a month with Seg sitting at his side ALL THE TIME. And one day Kara coming back from the mission and Mon and Seg being not there - Mon deciding to just leave DEO and renting some place with Seg (i would make Seg some kind of professor on university, talking about aliens etc). Karamel being idiots and not talking, meeting each other but one day DEO needs some help with dealing with aliens that were once allies of Daxamites and he comes and helps (he has beard now!) and i have no idea what to do next xD
Max is an asshole but with a moral code, I guess?
It would be precious. And I kind of think they could be some kind of frenemies? Enemybros? LOL?

Myth, I’m sorry if you answered this before, but can you make a ranking of your favorite monsters? 👀
Some monster boyfriend thirst got mixed in with a couple of these, I can only aplogise.
Werewolf - 8/10. A classic but not perfect because the formula can get a tad repetitive and modern interpretations have kind of robbed them of a bunch of mystique, but when its there, they're great. Van Helsing's design for them is the best interpretation, no I will not accept criticism.
Naga - 10/10 - a more recent love of mine. I'm sorry but you can get very creative with a person who is 30% human shaped and 70% tail.
Alien - 5/10 - I'm not into sci-fi stuff, so unless the alien be looking like Lotor, who is a 10/10 I'm likely not into that. BUT I can appreciate 'the Predator's design' and a couple of others.
Vampire - 11/10 - yeah I never grew outta my vampire phase. I don't care if it's basic bitch taste. There's a reason this monster icon has endured. But again I prefer ye olde interpretations of vampires rather than modern ones, unless they manage to capture the style and sophistication of melting candles, sweeping gowns, unrepentant attitudes and such. That said, Lost Boys slaps.
Dragon - 10/10 - They're awesome, hello? It's a mother trucking Dragon!
Goblin - 1/10 - no thank you
Angel - 9/10 - eldritch monster angel is superior to 'a dude with a halo and wings' gimmie cursed text speech and weird designs plz.
Hellhound/Gytrash/Church Grim - 10/10 bc they're good bois.
Gargoyle - 8/10 - Great monster but if we're talking 'monster boyfriend' they lose points due to turning to stone during the daylight hours.
Zombie - 2/10 - Warm Bodies is one of my favourite guilty pleasure films but they're honestly pretty boring and a tired concept.
Demon - 10/10 - classic. Encompasses a lot of different takes on the interpretation. The trope of summoning a demon in exchange for something will always be top notch. Good for horror or hotness depending on the story.
Centaur - 4/10 - top half hawt and I can appreciate an archer, but if we're talking monster s/o territory - unlike the Naga thing where you can separate them from being snakes because they just feel like a different species...centaurs just be straight-up horses down there.
Siren - 8/10 - sinks ships and drowns sailors using their melodic voices? Dats pretty cool bruh.
Ghost - 7/10 - angst/yearning potential and sure body possession can be fun, but ultimately it remains a sad s/o to have if you're a human
Orcs - 5/10- I'm not hugely into the big beefy type, so that's a pass for me, but I respect those who stan these guys.
Selkie - 7/10 - seals are cute and the concept that comes with it is a classic folktale but your bae will always belong more to 'the ocean' than to you.
Kelpie - 8/10 - I know I just gave Centaurs shit but Kelpies can shapeshift into humans sooo I know which one is better for an s/o.
Kitsune - 9/10 - spicy tricksters? With that aesthetic? Hell yee
Incubus/Succubus - 10/10 - self-explanatory. Like...c'mon.
Mermaid - 10/10 - classic.
Shark merfolk - 11/10 - good shit, yes. Give me the sharp teeth and danger vibes at the beach.
Tengu - 7/10 - Cool wings. Dunno about that mask though.
Nokken - 7/10 - I can vibe with a guy who plays the violin but the drowning women part is a little offputting. Also he always seems to be depicted in lakes or swamps, not particularly sexy water to hang around, unlike at the beach with merfolk.
Death/Grim reaper - 9/10 - hey the grim reaper has a lot of great depictions in media. Also sometimes death just needs a wife and it's always a great story of longing and pining.
Fae King - 11/10- Will let you disappear into the woods, never to be seen again. If you just give me your name, I can hook you up with one~

Little Women Review
I’m feeling incredibly motivated to do this so here we go. To set it up, yes I read little women as a kid and I saw the 1994 version years ago prior to my first viewing. I watched the 1933 and 1949 versions and the 1994 version again before the second viewing.
TLDR: Go watch this Movie I love it, imma buy this blu ray. To me despite structural changes this is the definitive movie adaptation of Little Women.
So initial personal reasons why I’ve always enjoyed this story is that it takes place in Mass; my cousins live in Concord, I grew up in New England and they definitely filmed in New England cause certain scenes. We still have old style buildings around like they have in the film and the landscape, especially for scenes in the fall were absolutely beautiful. Marmee even name drops my home state at one point so shout out there.
Greta Gerwig did an absolutely fantastic job with the adapted screenplay of this movie and I am quite the fan of her decision to split up the structure of the novel and create more flash back sequences to emphasize different events that took place and how that impacted characters. I think the decision to film with a yellow warm tone in the past compared with a blue, cool tone in the adulthood scenes was a smart move as a visual way to explicitly indicate which timeline we are in. The fashion of the ladies and the hairstyles definitely did help with the timeline as well. I also love how they designed the girls hair style and clothing when they were younger to have a piece of Marmee’s style with them to signify a piece of Marmee is in each of her daughters. I also really loved the way that scenes played out, how they were shot, how when a bunch of them where showing conversations that could happen in real life. The dynamics of the march sisters remind me of my own family and there are a few scenes where there was like multiple conversations going on at once and I loved that. Also I love the sound track its on par with the 2005 Pride & Prejudice soundtrack.
For the more minor roles:
Meryl Streep did her thing as Aunt March and was quite hilarious, I loved how she was like no kisses plz and her whole you need to marry wealthy and I didn’t get married cause I’m rich bit. Mr. Lawrence has a beautiful character arc especially with Beth. He did so well with that small role and he really made you feel for the loss of his daughter. John Brook was the sweet respectful man for his wife. Friedrich Bhaer was good as well. Not as many scenes of him as I was previously expecting but I bought the connection he and Jo had and he definitely proved to be an intellectual match for him.
Laura Dern was an excellent Marmee. She really brought the presence that she was the giving, calming presence for all her daughters, especially for Jo. I absolutely love the conversations she had with Jo about her always being angry and for talking to Jo about her not really being in love with Laurie. I felt like that conversation is a really important lesson for everyone to determine if they want to marry someone, to make sure they do marry some one cause they do truly love them and not cause they want to be loved. Mr. Dashwood, the new york city publisher was also a great addition to this story in terms of representing the way publishers were back in the day.
I loved how connected they made all the March sisters feel. They really did make them all feel like one unit in their younger years, that it hurt much more when they are older when their apart. I really Loved watching Jo especially interact with all her sisters and seeing how the dynamics changed over the years. With Meg she relates to her being the oldest siblings and the scene where they talk about their different goals in life right before Meg gets married. Its a lovely scene indicating not one’s goals in life are better than another persons goals. I Love how she cares so much for Beth and looks out for her. The dynamics of Jo and Amy’s relationship was fascinating to watch cause it reminded me a lot of me and my sister and how we bickered a lot, but still deeply care for one another, and eventually were able to respect one another.
I knew going into this movie that Saoirse Ronan was going to kill it as Jo, and she flipping delivered. I love her portrayal as Jo where she is not as too much as the 1933 and 1949 portrayals and yet was very ambitious and likable, very similar to the 1994 portrayal from Winona Ryder. I loved her speech with Marmee about how great women are and how she doesn’t have a life goal to get married but how she is very lonely. That hit hard. Her negotiating for her royalties to her book was a great addition to the end of the story. I feel as if she plays a certain type of character in her movies, but she does it sooo well and in a way that no one else can do justice for it. The relationship between Jo and Amy and Jo and Laurie were great to watch. Amy and Jo are so similar besides a few key differences, and those differences help make their tension believable and turns them into remarkable characters.
I love the take on Beth in this adaptation. They still play her as a sweet and caring individual, one that ultimately leads to her getting sick and dying, but they give her a little more quirky traits and have her say some funny one liners. She has a lot of subtle moments with Jo and Amy especially that makes their reactions to her death feel so real. Emma Watson did a much better job than i expected and gave a surprising amount of depth to Meg. I did really enjoy the sub plot of her buying that fabric for a dress. $50 back then was like close to $1000, and really does show her struggle with wanting to have nice things once in a while. Her speech to Jo about her desires to be a wife and a mother is beautiful. Meg I feel is a difficult role to play due to her calm presence and lack of a super extroverted like personality and Emma made it her own.
Timothee Chalamet is a fantastic Laurie. He did well in balancing Laurie’s immature and lazy side to him while making him endearing. Seeing his love for the March family grow over time was beautiful. His relationship with Jo and Amy were awesome. With Jo, they are a great example of a platonic friendship, especially from when this book was published. I really loved the rejected proposal on the hill. You can see Jo still resisting adulthood still from her sister’s wedding, even when Laurie proposes I think she sees that as the end of childhood for her. Along with that she never had an interest to get married and expresses that she doesn’t love him like that and why they wouldn’t make a good match. The argument doesn’t feel like unrequited love but more like two best friends having a disagreement. His scenes with Amy also highlight his path to adulthood and him learning about love in the process.
AMY MARCH FINALLY GOT HER DUE! About damn time she did. Amy is my favorite character from this adaptation and is the one that surprised me the most. Lord FLORENCE PUGH needs to get a damn nomination because she was fucking amazing. For me she was able to convincingly play a young and adult Amy so well. Amy is a woman who knows what she wants in life and is very determined to get them and work within the current societal circumstances she is in. She is able to push her ego aside to get what she wants. She is so cheeky and energetic when she is younger but becomes more refined and tactful when older. Her burning Jo’s book did indicate her jealousy of her sister and the immaturity of her emotions that over time she has a grip on more as an adult. Her relationship with Aunt March indicates the idea and pressure she has to take care of the rest of her family. When she has her economic proposition speech, you really see how this is adding so much pressure on her, pressure that does influence her choices and behavior later on.
But, my absolute favorite part about Amy’s development over the movie was her relationship with Laurie. I’m so happy Greta really took the time to flush out this relationship. I really love these two together. They are both a really great example of love that evolves over time. The little tid bits in the past with the small moments of Amy and her small crush over Laurie: THE FOOT MOLD, the way young Amy looks at Laurie, her drawing of him at the beach while flirting with Fred Vaughn, talking about how hot he is as a half Italian. All of that was perfection. Everything in Paris with these too was also sooo fantastic. I love it that prim and proper 20 year old lady Amy turns into a kid again when she sees Laurie and just jumping and hugging him, and then Laurie is all like you’re beautiful. when she invites him to the ball and he kisses Aunt March. Her being all like “its Laurie!” and looking back at him with that damn smile, the things that make my heart melt. With Amy and Laurie knowing each other for so long, Amy is able to be real with him and call him out throughout their time in Paris, mainly at the ball when his drunken fuckboi ass waltz in. Also The PAINTING ROOM, lawrd. Amy still shitting on Laurie for his behavior, their conversation about love, Amy’s speech on economic proposition, THE UNBUTTONING OF THE PAINTING SMOCK (that absolutely rivals the Pride & Prejudice 2005 hand touch in terms of sexual tension), Amy being able to be her true self around Laurie, Laurie telling Amy “You look beautiful...you are beautiful” (SWOOON). Then when they at the park: Amy scolding him for being lazy and not taking charge and being responsible, Amy drawing him again and showing him the older picture, Laurie telling Amy not to marry Fred “don’t marry him. Why? you know why.”, Amy realizing what hes implying and being all like Naw don’t you dare fam I’ve always been second to Jo “I won’t do it. Not when I have spent my entire life loving you.”. Laurie finally grew a pair and went off to London to make something of himself and Amy turning down Fred’s proposal realizing she wants to marry for love. Them reuniting in Paris after Beth dies, and being alike i wont let you travel alone even if you despise me, which Amy says she doesn’t despise him. And she states she aint marrying Fred and then rambles on and LAURIE KISSES HER GOD BLESS HE DO LOVE HER. and wow. Their love story is one of the most satisfying love story arcs I’ve seen in a long time.
Any ways that’s my long ass Review of Little Women 2019. GO watch it in theaters if you can. I will buy it and stream it when it comes out of theaters. This is the definitive adaptation for me and I think it will hold up well as an amazing period drama for years to come.

On to Eps 17 + 18!
Yay for Wu ChuChu going with Li Sheng. He at least seems a bit more capable than General Wen, so that’s something! (I mean, going by the show that... doesn’t seem to be difficult. XD)
Oh oh big drama in Hengyang. Xie Yun meets up with Madam Nichang of the, uhm, Feather Robe Theatre Troupe. She seems to also be some kind of master and is supposed to be the only one who can help Zhou Fei. It’s not very clear, but it seems this will come at quite the cost for herself (will this be another old master that dies after meeting Zhou Fei? XD). At least several of her girls from the troupe aren’t happy about it.
And of course Disha is also there killing off Madam Nichang’s people. *sighsigh*
Laughed a lot at Wang Yibo in old man make up. That actually wasn’t so bad!
It was also really telling that XY is very bad at hiding his feelings for Zhou Fei. Madam Nichang immediately saw through his act („She’s my sister!“ uhuh) and was all, „She must mean sooo much to you.“ Yeah well, pls rescue her! “Nope.” :((
And of course Li Zheng, the bestest man to ever live, also helped Madam Nichang in the past and so she’s in his debt and will help Zhou Fei now anyway. That man sure got around helping people, huh?
Sooo, from one moment to the next it’s suddenly night? Okay.
And oh well Zhou Fei, can’t you for once just stay put? Making everyone (XY) worry about you! That poor man was beside himself!
And ugh there’s Shen Tianshu again, being all smug and smirky in Madam Nichang’s courtyard. I loved how Md. Nichang was all snarky, like, „Just standing here talking to you has taken away half of my strength already.“ I feel you.
There’s the Hai Tian Yi Se again, the mystery McGuffin of this show! At least STS believed her enough to let it go for now. So we now know that it’s some awesome kind of treasure with some cool magical abilities or so.
Also: Md. Nichang is sooooo pretty! <3
I loved Zhou Fei in that blue dress, that looked beautiful! XY was all hearteyes again, gazing adoringly at his future wife, and she’s like, pouting, “Where are my usual clothes?“ *poutpout* Awww hell.
And there’s that bit of dialogue, XY going, „I only want to be a maid doing my future wife’s hair.“ <3 And Zhou Fei is all like, „This is so ugly.“ OMG the tomboy cliché! XD She even hides behind a veiled hat because she’s so uncomfortable in pretty girl clothes. XDD
I really liked the bit where XY explains the differences between all the masters of martial arts, and that Zhou Fei actually isn’t doing badly at all! Because she of course is like, “Fighting was so difficult, I messed up so much, I was so bad at it.“ And he’s all reassuring like, “Baby sweetheart love of my life, you did not fight some inconsequential z-grade guys like everyone else who starts out; you fought some of the best masters that are currrently alive. Cut yourself some slack, queen.“
Oh no Li Yan roaming freely through a city! XD I at first thought she’s in the same city as A-Fei but it seems that she’s in Hengyuan while A-Fei is in HengYang? I hope that’s right. Anyway she is definitely resourceful and meets another likely important character, Yang Jin (he’s got a poster). Who seems to not have many braincells but als felt bad about knocking her out. They were made for each oher, right? XD

ok one L abt reading the series on my ereader is that the flipbook illustrations arent there ;_; those were my favvvvv
anyways I love animorphs still
I feel like I'll end up repeating myself a lot during these little liveblogs lmao but mannnn it’s so good. its so hardcore. like I know that that’s the whole Thing but I still get shocked by some of the stuff that happens
like a big theme in the series centers around the morality of killing your enemies - and it’s so all over the place bc in book 6 you have jake boiling a bunch of yeerks alive, which is kinda gnarly if you think abt it, but the alternative would be to leave them there and let them infest people soo...? and that’s basically the point, that there are never any easy choices in war
also I went on the animorphs wiki to look at trivia bc I love doing that and I cant BELIEVE (some of) the books were reissued in 2011 and they changed/removed some of the references to be more ‘modern’ omfg....talk about erasing 90s culture smh
likeeee I was born in 97 so I didn't exactly grow up in the 90s and therefore some of the references go over my head but its so charming and fun to have them there! and it makes sense given that the books are SET in the 90s
I don't remember ever being confused by any of the references as a kid (tho for sure a lot of them went over my head), but then again I read the books in like 2008 sooo
also some of the stuff that they change - like changing ‘recorded w/a vcr’ to ‘recorded w/the TV’ or ‘floppy disc’ to ‘flash drive’ may make more sense to modern audiences, but doesn't make sense in the context of the story still being set in the 90s
tho it is funny that the books use the phrase ‘hook up’ to mean ‘meet up’ a lot bc that is a phrase that definitely has a different meaning nowadays
alsooooo as it turns out I'm p sure I only read a couple of the spinoffs - the hork-bajir chronicles and the ellimist chronicles (which was confusing lmao), bc my library didn’t have the others :( 2007/2008 woes....
but now I get to read the spinoffs woooooooo so I read the first megamorphs and the andalite chronicles
I'm reading them in the chronological order (I think?) which is good bc part of the problem was that I read the ellimist book at a completely weird time and it confused me more lmao
megamorphs 1 basically felt like a regular animorphs book except longer, but the plot didn't feel like it needed all that extra page space tbh? even so it was an entertaining adventure
and rachel having amnesia was great, amnesia is one of my fav tropes lmao. and it was a lot of fun here, though a bit underutilized
another favorite trope of mine is time travel, so I'm gonna have a really fun time here w/that
as for the andalite chronicles, I really enjoyed that one. I thought it was a well done story about the horrors of war (which is a theme animorphs does excellently), kind of similar to the overarching story of the whole series, but fit into one book without feeling rushed
the way the story starts out with elfangor wanting to be a hero, not understanding what that entails, to the end where he IS going to be a hero, and he knows now that this is a burden rather than a reward
the horror elements are also really strong, with the taxxon morph being horrifying of course
and mannnn I loved that we got to see more of the taxxons as a species, and see that not all taxxons submitted to the yeerks - which breaks the previous theme of ‘all the taxxons are evil just because’
this book also establishes that the taxxons gave themselves over to the yeerks due to their constant hunger being unbearable, so it isn’t just that they’re evil for fun
animorphs does such an excellent job showing that each ‘side’ of a war will have good and bad (or at least sympathetic and unsympathetic) people
also loren was awesome, what a cool character. though I didn't realize she was literally like 13 until the very end of the book, holy shit. that's crazy. i thought she was 16 at the youngest....geez. her throwing a rock at visser 3 is even more iconic knowing she's a middle schooler at the time
and chapman was here! I'm assuming this must be the same chapman as the assistant principal controller... I thought it was a little strange to put chapman in that role, bc in this book he was a huge asshole basically the entire time, but in the previous (’future’) book it was revealed that he became a controller willingly only to spare his daughter, which is pretty far from this book where he’s actively trying to sell humanity out to the yeerks...people change I guess? (also he got his memory erased so I guess there's that)
alloran was a really interesting character. horrors of war again - we hear from his old buddy that he used to be a fun, witty guy, but war changed him into somebody who would do horrible things
and him becoming a controller was horrifying, obviously, but I like that alloran wasn't portrayed as some perfect, holy guy in order to make it all the more tragic when he got infested. its already fucked up enough as it is, and making him flawed was a lot more meaningful
and him wanting to flush all the yeerks out into space....oooooof the (later) parallels hurt
plus the fact that elfangor refusing to commit genocide against the helpless yeerks (even though they’re the enemy) directly contributing to alloran becoming a controller.....oof. I love that it shows that even making the morally correct decisions during war can lead to awful things happening, but not in a way that endorses evil actions - the story isn’t saying that elfangor should have killed the yeerks, it’s saying that there are no good choices in war
arbron being trapped as a taxxon was fucked up. but also really intriguing, especially how he found purpose and led a free taxxon uprising. I don't remember if we hear from him/the free taxxons again but I hope so
also the plot twist of tobias being elfangors SON...bruh. I do remember that despite not having read this book so it must come up in the main story later but my memory of that is vauge so I’m excited to see how that plays out. it’s always gonna be hilarious to me that ax is technically tobias’s uncle
and then the ellimist drops in and wacks up the time stream even more. classic. I love the crazy time travel stuff in animorphs
omfg and the bits where elfangor is a human tech guy and talked about his friends bill and steve LMAOOOOO
also the scene where elfangor drives the yellow mustang while blasting '(I cant get no) satisfaction’ by the rolling stones was one of the most iconic things I've ever read
basically I loved all the angles of war fucking people up. from loren’s dad, to alloran, to elfangor himself learning about the true horrors of war...v well done imo
ok back to the main series - so my pick for the most fucked up scene SO FAR (in my own personal opinion) - the scene where they're in the jungle and rachel passes out in bear morph and a bunch of rainforest ants start EATING HER ALIVE and like crawling into her ears and mouth and HGGGGGG that was genuinely so fucking disturbing
its a good thing that the time travel made it so rachel couldn't remember that bc that was fuuuuucked
another contender is a scene we don't actually see - erek having his capacity for violence instated and then slaughtering a ton of human and hork-bajir controllers
like damn, you know its fucked up when its too fucked up for ANIMORPHS to even ‘show.’ this is a series that doesn't pull punches but evidentially that would've been Too Much to actually portray (understandably). also i feel like seeing the aftermath/everyone’s reactions had more of an impact than describing erek killing a bunch of people would have
also I forgot that marco Literally Fucking Dies during that scene and that's why he doesn't get to see the slaughter. wow
and then in the very next book JAKE dies too. jesus
oh it was also so sad and fucked up when marco’s dad told him that he and his wife used to fight sometimes, but then all of a sudden they stopped fighting, and their relationship was basically entirely peaceful and perfect - and this is how marco knows exactly when his mom was made into a controller, bc of course a yeerk wouldn't care enough to get into petty arguments like that....ooooof
Okay and book 15 really got me...that was fucking heavy man. Geeeez. Everything w/Marco and his mom is so fucked uppppp
Like he literally has to deal with so much awful traumatizing shit. The scene where he pretends to be a controller and is face to face w/visser one and THAT HIS MOM but he can’t even do anything, and he just sees the evil in her eyes and thinks about how there’s no way she had been controlled by a yeerk that long before bc he’s never seen her look like that...that was so fucking sad.
Plus Marcos mom now thinking that Marco is a controller...aughh...and then later Marco knows he can’t even think-speak to her bc he’ll just talk about everything he’s wanted to talk about to his mom this whole time... ;_;
And the parts where Marcos humor slips and the utter rage he feels towards the situation comes through...man
Plus everything about him being understandably afraid of sharks after being nearly torn in half by one back during their first dolphin adventure
Augh oh and jake telling Marco that everyone can tell something is up bc Marco isn’t joking around and talking about how insane their plan is like usual, so Marco fakes it sand does all that even tho he’s terrified and conflicted...aughhhh
Ok and the last scene where Marco is thinking about a future where he and his parents can talk plainly about how awful and traumatizing everything is, and then eventually they’ll feel okay enough to joke about it, bc Marcos mom is the one who taught him to look at the funny side of life...Oh The Pain
There were a lot of great fucked up individual lines in this book too. I’m just so sad about these poor middle schoolers jfc
Also I do distinctly remember the scene where they collapse the shark tank at Ocean World or w/e, it was weird af reading it bc I remembered none of the rest of the book but got weird deja vu reading that scene and remembering having read it like 13+ years ago
if it’s not clear by now I have a pretty terrible memory for media which is honestly good bc then I can reread things and it’s like new
Also jake...man...I said it previously but I was kinda eh about jake when I first read these bc he’s kinda the ‘basic’ character, but now I find his story much more interesting
His conflict over being leader is really good. KAA does a fantastic job capturing the pressure he’s under bc he was chosen by his friends to be the leader, so he REALLY can’t back out, and he doesn’t necessarily feel up to it, but feels he has no choice in the matter...
And constantly having to make really difficult decisions that could get his friends killed...geez. It’s so much pressure. And he talks about wanting to go back to being a normal kid when this is all over, and it kinda strikes me as him being in denial - like, there’s no way things can ever be ‘normal’ again, but that’s his way of coping.
Especially with Tom and all that. That conflict is so compelling...jake having to play all these different roles - as leader, as a son/student, as a regular brother to Tom - he’s constantly having to act a certain way and rarely gets to be Himself
It’s actually kinda relatable in a way - that feeling of being In Charge, but in a somewhat abstract and informal way, so you feel like regular old you, but you have to carefully regulate how you act bc the people around you expect a certain standard of behavior from you...
And all the morally grey situations they’re put in are fucked up, but especially for jake who has the final say on what they do, even when knowing it could lead to his friends being killed or made into controllers
Like in the book with the cannibal yeerk guy - there’s basically no good choices there. Jake lets the cannibal live, and (at first) implies that it’s for the best that he’s cannibalizing other yeerks and therefore helping get rid of some yeerks - except that he kills their hosts too
but the alternative would be to directly kill another human being who isn't actively fighting/resisting you, which is a fucked up thing for a middle schooler to have to do
And the conflict between jake and Cassie is really excellent bc jake has to make these awful decisions, and Cassie is the type of person who can’t stand that sort of thing, so it gets left up to jake a lot, but then she’s upset with jake for doing something awful, even while knowing that there were no better options
like, her asking jake to kill the cannibal guy for her was really fucked up, but also entirely understandable for cassie as a character to ask. it was an emotionally charged situation, and cassie is an emotional person. she’s also somebody who like to Act, to do concrete good, and getting rid of an Evil Bad Guy in front of her would be a definite action
But Cassie is a great source of morality to the group - most of them are pretty jaded, but Cassie is able to hope in a way none of the rest are. It creates a really compelling dynamic between jake and Cassie that I kinda dismissed when I was like 10 or w/e
Also the scene where jake as a fly gets crushed and starts dying? Seriously fucked. And then after when he’s nearly breaking down in the airport and Cassie comforts him...that was a really good scene. Cassie is so good
And the continuity is so excellent - I love how in book 17, Cassie (and jake to an extent) doesn’t really weigh in on the moral debate abt the oatmeal bc she’s still shaken up by asking jake to murder a guy for her, and then (presumably) going ahead and lighting his house on fire when jake doesn’t kill him
And augh jake and Marco have such a good and interesting dynamic - the entire group kinda pushes each other into their respective ‘roles’ in the group, but for a few books that’s really true for jake and marco
I don't remember what book it was but at some point marco (I think) mentions that jake understands what marco is dealing with w/his mom being a controller bc of tom, but that they don’t talk about it bc they ‘don't talk about stuff like that’ or something and I'm just like noooo talk to each other :(
but at this point jake feels like he can’t really express doubt and fear and stuff like that bc he’s the Leader and they look to him to be strong (which is ironically very similar to how rachel feels), and marco feels like he can’t be serious bc he’s the funny guy.
Basically I love all the different dynamics in the group. How Cassie and Rachel are such opposites but are best friends and get along well, while Marco and Cassie are more directly opposed - as jake says, Marco is ruthless, and Cassie definitely isn’t. Rachel and Marco are also pretty different which is interesting, bc they have a lot in common, and actually agree on a lot (even if they disagree out loud) but their commonalities combined with their circumstances make them react very differently to the same situations
I also love seeing the differences between characters from each other’s POV - like, p much all the characters think that Rachel is completely fearless, but when the book is from her POV, we get to see that that isn’t true at all - she feels plenty of fear, but she recognizes that her role in the group is to be the fearless one, so she pushes aside her fear to fit into that role (which inadvertently pushes her more and more into that ‘fearless warrior’ box - something that happens to all the characters more and more as the story goes on, like jake as ‘the leader’ and Marco as ‘the jokester’).
Also I loooove the grey morality of literally everything. Like the book where ax discovers an andalite traitor - not a controller, just an andalite who betrayed them to the yeerks. This leads to the deaths of like a hundred other andalites, and that whole scene you really just feel for ax, bc he feels so awful about everyone else dying while he escapes, yet he’s also so grateful to be alive, which he in turn feels bad about...
And ax’s conflict about being torn between his home w/his fellow andalites and his new home on earth w/his friends is great
And oh man I fucking love book 19. Any of the books where it goes more into the yeerks and their side of things are so good, just like the book where jake was made into a controller.
And book 19, where we meet a sympathetic yeerk, comes right after 18, where we meet an andalite traitor - again, I love how we clearly see that no one side is completely good or completely bad
So yeah book 19 fucking slapped. That shit was so compelling. I love how Cassie made a bunch of foolish decisions based on naïve hope, but it worked out!! Things aren’t always bleak and awful!
Except there were plenty bleak and awful parts of this book. It had a great balance of moods tbh, even though a lot of the situations were extremely contrived lmao. I love the stuff that aftran says, which is basically what I was thinking when I started my reread - being a yeerk fucking sucks, you’re literally a blind slug but also completely and fully sentient, on the same level as humans and andalites - and as afran pointed out this book, the yeerks are born as parasites, just as humans are born as predators - why is it okay for the humans to kill countless animals to eat, but not for the yeerks to enslave races to act as hosts? Well, the situation isn’t totally comparable, which Cassie and Marco both point out when aftran makes that comparison - the yeerks are enslaving sentient species, and cows and chickens are not the same as the humans and hork-bajir (though the story understandably doesn’t fall too deeply into the ‘who deserves what right/animal sentience’ rabbit hole).
And I like that aftran points out that the yeerks basically have 2 options currently - stay helpless and blind in a yeerk pool, or enslave a host. It’s interesting to hear that a lot of yeerks don’t like doing this but see it as the only options, as opposed to complete sensory deprivation. It makes me wonder if there are yeerks who are so staunchly against it that they elect to stay as pool-bound slugs forever
Also maybe it’s the shounen anime fan in me but I don’t even care that much that Cassie’s entire plan was completely off the rails and hinged on only the slightest chance of success - with failure being much more likely and completely catastrophic, with the animorphs and their loved ones all being wiped out, vs success being unlikely and also achieving...a moral victory? Peace between two enemy combatants in a huge war? nothing all that concrete...anyways it was a bunch of good-faith horrible decisions on Cassie’s part, but I don’t even care? I love stories where hope and love save the day against all odds, especially when they’re wielded like weapons by a character and make everything end nicely
This is especially true here bc animorphs is generally a series that leans very far away from that type of thing, so when it does happen, it feels like a victory. Plus the David trilogy is next so we kinda need a happy ending while we can
also bc I compared animorphs to hxh last time, I now have to compare it to the other series I've (partially) liveblogged, transformers mtmte.
this is gonna be more abstract and brief but basically. mtmte is all about after the war, and everyone has so much trauma and everything just sucks, so they all go on a space cruise and work on themselves. basically.
but the series does a lot of exploration of how war fucks people up - same as animorphs, tho animorphs spans the beginning of the war (for the main characters at least) until the end, whereas mtmte starts when the war ends.
but the point is. both series do an excellent job showcasing the wide range of reactions people have to being put in unthinkable situations during wartime. all the major characters in mtmte go through arcs where they heal/change from the war, some more subtle than others
basically the animorphs needs to go on a wacky space cruise adventure with a bunch of other fucked up people and figure their shit out, mtmte style
