Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999, Michael Patrick Jann)
23/02/2024
Drop Dead Gorgeous is a 1999 black comedy in which Kirstie Alley and Denise Richards play a mother and daughter willing to do anything to win a beauty contest.
Amber Atkins is a teenager who signs up to participate in the competition so she can follow in the footsteps of her idols, television journalist Diane Sawyer and her own mother, Annette, a former contestant.
Janelle become deaf during her rehearsal, luckily she is an expert in American Sign Language, so she claims that, despite her dropping out of the pageant, she has never been happier.
After learning of the costume situation, Lisa leaves the show to give her approved costume to Amber, who performs her tap dance routine to a standing ovation.

Comedy Review: The State
Thurs. 10/19/23 @ Chevalier Theatre (Medford, MA)
One of the greatest sketch comedy groups of all time IMHO is The State. Their sketch show premiered on MTV in Dec. 1993. They formed at NYU a few years earlier and garnered enough of a following to get a show on MTV, who were getting into comedy shows in the early 90s (i.e. The Ben Stiller Show, The Jon Stewart Show, etc). I loved this show in high school and my friends and I quoted it frequently. Their humor was very similar to the style of comedy my friends and I were doing on my cable access TV show at the time. Their show lasted until July 1995 (I have the entire series on DVD). Since then, the members have popped up in numerous films and TV shows and in the case of David Wain and Michael Showalter, they have even directed films too. After a 1995 TV special on CBS, the group's TV show was over. But in the years that followed they had various reunions: a comedy album, a book, and even some live reunion shows. This Fall they have been doing some reunion shows and one of them hit nearby Medford!

Louie disrupts the Last Supper
In 2018, I wrote about the 25th anniversary of The State and Kevin Allison retweeted it and Ken Marino liked it. I've had some interactions with Kevin Allison during his RISK! shows in NYC and I briefly saw Michael Ian Black at an airport and then I later had an interview in a production office for a film he was directing. But I never actually hung out with them, even though I feel a very strong Gen X connection to them. For this short comedy tour, it is the reunion of original cast members Allison, Black, Michael Patrick Jann, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Thomas Lennon, Joe Lo Truglio, Marino, and Wain. Sadly, Robert Ben Garant, Todd Holoubek, and Showalter could not make this show. One of the things about comedians is that unlike musicians who go on tour and fans want them to play their hits, comedians have a successful special and then when they tour, they are expected to do new material rather than repeating the exact same jokes they just did on their recent special. In the case of The State reuniting for these shows, that expectation is out the window. Since we don't get to see them perform together that often, the fact that they are together - you want to see them revisit their famous characters and sketches. And they did not disappoint!

Taco mailman with Allison and Black
The show was a mixture of sketches and multimedia with various old clips (some of which were very rare) of their CBS special, an MTV News segment, You Wrote It, You Watch It (the MTV series they did a year prior to their own show that was hosted by then-unknown Jon Stewart), and more. In terms of sketches and characters they did included The Jew, The Italian and the Red Head Gay; Louie, the guy who says his catchphrase at the Last Supper; Taco Mailman (possibly one of the funniest moments in the history of comedy IMHO); Barry and Levon; Porcupine Racetrack; and in one of the more challenging sketches of the night they addressed that Showalter wasn't there to do Doug, the rebellious teen, so they brought up a "fan" from the audience to play him with the cast members. It was still funny to see a rebellious teen angry that his dad is too cool and he can't outrage him. This was such a special show to see these performers together again. I can only hope this leads to another reunion of sorts (a new film? series? a bigger tour?). But for now, let's celebrate that the dream of 1994 was still alive for one brief shining moment!

And so, dear Lord, it is with deep sadness that we turn over to you this young woman, whose dream to ride on a giant swan resulted in her death. Maybe it is your way of telling us... to buy American.
