The thing about Nona the Ninth that really blows my tits off is the politics.
Like up until now yeah, we knew our protags lived in an empire, and we got a few tantalizing peeks at how it worked, but it was mostly just a Fantasy Empire In Space
And then wham! Nona opens with our main girl living as a refugee in a badly destabilized modern colonial state recently torn apart by the struggle for independence and controlled by an uneasy coalition of armed militia and it's like. Oh.
So it's an empire empire.

I love spooky forests, and creepy lights in deserts, and idyllic suburban towns hiding dark secrets as much as the next person but WHERE IS THE URBAN SUPERNATURALISM?!
Give me spooky sludge living in pipes, abandoned lots between buildings that maybe were abandoned for a reason, street performers playing songs strangely familiar late into the night. I want urban/new york city gothic!

Jamea Richmond-Edwards is an artist from Detroit, Michigan who, after two decades away, recently returned to her home city.
The story of her mother’s family being displaced and traveling across four Southern states due to tragic floods and tornadoes is told in an epic multimedia installation, titled “This Water Runs Deep,” composed of a monumental painting and a sound sculpture of jazz instrumentation in A Movement in Every Direction: Legacies of the Great Migration.
See this work that blends mythological imagery and the artist’s family legacy in A Movement in Every Direction: Legacies of the Great Migration through June 25.

i defend my thesis tomorrow. absolutely freaking wild. who let me get this far honestly? that should be illegal.
i saw someone reblog with "master lexx" yesterday and yes that is the term i will be using from now on thank you for the idea. bow to me, peasants
ok jokes aside i realize i have several WIPs desperate for updates. all have drafts in various states of completion (from "literally 500 words away from being done" to "i think there's a blank doc somewhere...") gonna just knock 'em out one by one starting when i get out tomorrow.
update order will be as follows:
The Truth to Light -3rd and final chapter
Everything Was White -chapter 21
Emergency Contact -3rd and final part
and then, you know, we'll see how it goes from there
thank u for all the patience ✌️

Migrations Box: Winter 2024.
I really enjoyed this subscription last year, so I'm participating again! Of the lot, I'm actually most excited for VERDIGRIS (I know, right: wild, given that cover). I love getting surprise books I'd never pick out myself hand selected and shipped directly to me.

It's funny how our parents or grand parents made it out of villages and rural backgrounds only for us wanting to get settled there once we're financially secured.

Carrie Mae Weems pays tribute to her grandfather and calls for justice for her family.
In A Movement in Every Direction: Legacies of the Great Migration, Weems shares the story of the disappearance of her grandfather Frank Weems, who was attacked by a white mob in Earle, Arkansas in 1936. Presumed dead, he narrowly escaped and made his way to Chicago on foot, never again reuniting with his family. By weaving historical events with fragmented family stories, photographs, poetry, music, and interviews, the artist reveals the tragedy of her grandfather’s disappearance and the aftermath of his vanishing, highlighting her family’s ongoing search for answers.
Experience the work of this trailblazing artist, community-focused activist, and soon-to-be Brooklyn Artists Ball honoree in #GreatMigrationBkM through June 25.

feels kinda weird to jump from minuscule, niche fandom where everyone knows each other, to humongous fandom where we could hypothetically establish a country just with the active members, to small, niche fandom again where everyone seems to know each other except you
all extremely interesting experiences ngl /pos
