Star Trek theme tunes: worst to best
Star Trek’s many TV series each have an opening sequence that attempts to set up the viewer for the show ahead. A good theme tune delivers a high-quality piece of music that encapsulates the show’s essence — and it is on this basis that I’ve ranked the themes. What isn’t included in my ranking is anything about the graphics that accompany the music, nor the show itself. Naturally, these are all purely my personal opinions, so there can be no argument.
Let’s get started!
11: Enterprise
“It’s been a long road…” are five words that launched a lot of strong feelings — and rightly so. The jarring mismatch between everything about this song and everything Enterprise was about relegates this theme to the bottom of the heap. The opening graphics are spot-on for the show’s premise — but I never got to watch them because I needed to skip the music, and that makes me madder.
If you want to know what could have been, search YouTube for “Star Trek: Enterprise Opening Credits with Archer’s Theme”. That music is perfect for the show: slow, dramatic, building up for the big reveal. Then finish weeping / gnashing your teeth and come back here.
This theme also meant that we can never have a Star Trek theme with words again, ever, because we have been all primed to hate such things because of Enterprise — and that’s sad.
Imagine if we’d had a good theme with words that we could all sing at appropriate and inappropriate occasions.
10: The Animated Series
You’d forgotten about this series, hadn’t you? I will confess I haven’t watched any episodes (unlike the other ST series), but that doesn’t me having an opinion about the theme music. The jaunty theme music. The theme music that speaks of hijinks and hilarious consequences. The theme with super precise drumming — the perfect accompaniment as we join our hero sipping a cocktail in his usual bar by the beach.
Wait, this show is about space exploration?
9: Discovery
Open with Those Four Notes (good), wistful hunting call horns (good), build up to a climax (good), and then… umm…
What follows musically reminds me of Fringe (a great show that also involved Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci as creators). Fringe was a show about the discovery of new scientific things (and the consequences thereof)— but Discovery is not. The stories of Discovery revolve around battling against various things. The main theme (minimalist repeated eighth note patterns with a slow-moving melody) simply doesn’t speak to premise of the show. It ends with the ascending “Star Trek motif”, but it just feels like something bolted on to end things.
This is a theme based on the title, not on the events in the show.
8: The Original Series
I’m going to get some flak for this, but I don’t care. Yes, The Original Series is sacred. Yes, this theme gave us Those Four Notes right at the start. Yes, it gave us the classic opening words. Yes, we must remember TV was different back then when judging TOS. But I’m ranking the music, and so that’s all that matters.
This is a show about exploring strange new worlds and going boldly. The music is not that. The music is about going somewhere on holiday in your 1960s convertible, or possibly going home from work for the weekly comedic capers. It’s not going boldly anywhere, it’s not exploring new worlds, and that’s final.
… I am going to get so much flak for this.
7: Picard
This is a theme unlike any other, but this a series unlike other, so that’s OK. The wistful main melody on solo cello works for the show and its premise. The theme then gets musically developed by other instruments in a musically satisfyingly way.
However, two-thirds (!) of the title graphics are consumed by the 137 producers, supervising producers, co-executive producers, executive producers, and producing producers — and it feels the music had to be extended by a good 30 seconds to cover them all. Like Discovery, it ends with ends with the ascending “Star Trek motif”, but it (just about) feels musically connected to what came before.
Overall, I am left with a very neutral opinion. There’s nothing that bad about this music, but nothing that makes it stand out.
It’s boringly OK.
6: Strange New Worlds
After the classic opening words, the dramatic bass line/repetitive strings/drums kick in, the music builds, everything’s set up for the main melody…. and what’s that? Well, you can’t hear that melody because the orchestration that gives it insufficient body, and the sound mix gives the accompanying dramatic bass line/repetitive strings/drums far too much prominence.
The overall structure is good — repeat the main melody with some extra oomph, transition to the B melody, build to a climax with some block chords, then bring every down nicely with the hunting horn call. It ticks all the boxes on (manuscript) paper — but the orchestration and mix just means I can’t enjoy it properly.
Give the melody some more body, turn the volume down on the rhythm section, and this theme would jump up a lot of places.
5: Deep Space 9
DS9 isn’t about going boldly anywhere, but it is still about dealing with dramatic, important things. The music has a stately beauty that reflects both those things. The opening lonely horn illustrates the emptiness of space, before being joined by more horns to build drama. Then the main melody kicks in over a minimal accompaniment, raising the hairs on the back of my neck. There’s a pedal note that sustains through most of the opening — so that when the bass finally moves, it makes for a dramatic conclusion.
Later seasons brought a new version that tried to punch up the excitement a notch by increasing the speed of the main melody and adding some more texture to the accompaniment — but at the cost of the stately beauty that is this theme’s best feature. Let’s ignore it.
The title sequence is about 30 seconds too long, which means the beauty has faded somewhat by the end. (Yes, the opening for Strange New Worlds is a similar length, but the music doesn’t kick in until after 30+ seconds).
Overall, a solid piece of music that aligns well with the show’s premise.
4: Lower Decks
Lower Decks is a show that is both 100% serious and 100% affectionate parody. It does everything any other Star Trek TV series does, while turning it up 11 in order to skewer those things. Musically, that’s a tough premise for a theme tune.
So what happens? We open with Those Four Notes, followed by hunting horn calls, then a dramatic main theme on trumpet that’s repeated on all the strings — followed by gear-changing chords into the real main theme. A theme that gets a full-bore orchestra with a melody on brass that descends like someone resigned to not doing first contact (no hopeful ascending motifs here!). Then a solid build-up brings it to a satisfying conclusion.
Like the show, this theme works both seriously and as affectionate parody.
3: Voyager
The show has a tension between “let’s get home as soon as possible” and “ooh, new alien planet to explore” — and the music reflects that.
The theme opens with muted trumpets on a lonely motif (plus timpani) at the start to bring a sense of the dramatic, but without wanting to shout too loudly about it in this unknown part of the galaxy. The main theme on the horns is repeated with added texture and followed by a B melody on strings. Both bring a sense of the long journey ahead, with an ebb and flow throughout.
A slow build-up is then followed by a gentle climb back down — then a rapid (and musically seamless) build up to an emphatic restatement of the opening motif, ringing out to remind us this isn’t just about skulking back to Earth.
Voyager may be headed for home, but it’s still boldly going new places.
2: The Next Generation
Whatever you feel about Star Trek: The Motion Picture, we can all thank it for this music. TNG opens with Those Four Notes on something ethereal, followed by the best delivery of the classic opening words (sorry Anson Mount!) with a hunting call on horns underneath—then we’re into music about exploring strange new worlds and going boldly. It’s going on an adventure — journeying to places unknown to find things unknown.
Structurally, it’s simpler than other themes: after the main melody on brass, we get the string-heavy B melody twice, then back to a shortened version of the main melody to end. However, the post-words music only takes up half the opening, and those two melodies have enough going on to sustain our interest.
You’re left excited about what’s going to happen this week— because we’re exploring, damnit.
1: Prodigy
Four chords build tension, launching into drums+ostinato that tell you right away that exciting things will be Going Down.
Dramatic trombone and bells set up a musical cadence that gets resolved into the start of the heart-stirring main melody soaring out on horns clearly over the accompaniment (take note, SNW). The main melody repeats with added trumpets, and transitions into the drum-less B melody on lush strings that tells you it’s also about the journey. Then bridge into a repeat with everything turned up a notch.
Things get a little chaotic for a moment (what else do you expect with this crew?), but it’s OK, because we’re back to those dramatic trombone and bells (plus friends) to bookend things and lead us into a final resolution… that leaves just enough going on afterwards to accompany Those Four Notes, as though that was the plan all along. Then spike the ending so there’s no doubt we’re done.
Perfect.

10 Cartoons With The Best Racial Diversity

Diversity is important in cartoons, and while racial diversity has been done well a lot for a while, I am happy to say that it is continuing to be done more and executed in a better fashion as time goes on! Today, I will be discussing what are, in my opinion, the 10 cartoons with the best racial diversity.
10. OK KO! Let’s be Heroes

Kicking off the list with a series that was also featured in my list counting down the cartoons with the best LGBTQ representation! OK KO! Let’s be Heroes had many awesome instances of racial representation throughout as well. A good portion of characters all have different races, which is amazing to see! While many shows do have different races between characters, one thing that separated OK KO! Let’s be Heroes from the rest was one episode called “No More Pow Cards”, in which KO’s friend Dendy feels that she will never be a hero due to the fact that her turtle race has been viewed as monsters. Due to this, these cards that KO and Dendy collect do not represent Dendy’s race. However, instead of just letting that happen, KO and Dendy confront the CEO. When seeing Dendy, the CEO sees that some of the Kappa are heroic, and due to this, he finally allows Kappa cards to be made. This episode was one of the main standouts to me, but aside from that, the series does stand strong in the field of representation!
OK KO! Let’s Be Heroes was a Cartoon Network series that ran from 2017 to 2019 for a total of 3 seasons and 112 episodes. The series was about Kaio Kincaid, also known as K.O. who hopes to become the world’s greatest hero. While hoping to accomplish this, he works at a store known as Gar’s Hero Supply and Bodega, which sells a variety of items, whether that be food, or even hero supplies. He works alongside two other employees known as Radicles and Enid. Oftentimes, the trio have to fight off Boxmore, a store that sells items to supervillains. OK KO: Let’s Be Heroes! is an amazing series with a unique artstyle, interesting characters and a great concept! It is definitely an amazing series that is racially diverse, and just a good series in general!  You can watch OK KO! Let’s be Heroes on HBO Max or Hulu!
9. The Hollow

Now, we move onto another show that I feel is quite underrated! The Hollow was a series which had a diverse main cast, all having a different race. Furthermore, the characters all feel normal, and they do not act differently based on their race, making them all feel more human. Having almost every main character different worked very well for me because it just felt that the series had the goal of showing people that different groups can get along well regardless of race. This series was one that was made in Canada, and in Canada, diverse groups like the one in The Hollow is very common.
The Hollow was a series running from 2018 to 2020 for a total of 2 seasons and 20 episodes. The series takes place in a strange world, where three teenagers named Adam, Mira and Kai all wake up. The three do not have any memories, and all they have at the time they wake up are each other. Due to this, the three work together to explore this new world, and to find their way back to their home (wherever their home is). However, they soon find that this world is not all that they think it is. The Hollow was a great series to me. Alongside its highlights, I loved the worldbuilding present in the series. Furthermore, the darker colors really stood out to me! It really matches with the feel of the show! It was definitely a fun series, and I do wish Netflix treated it better! 8. The Loud House

Now, the Loud House is definitely another series that has to be mentioned if talking about diversity! The series has a lot of diversity among the different characters, from the Loud’s being a family with a Scottish Heritage, Lincoln’s best friend being African-American, and another family somewhat close to the Loud’s, the Santiago’s are Mexican! Furthermore, the series is a great representation of how different families can be as they have different struggles that they face, and different circumstances overall. The Loud House may have a bit of a negative reputation these days, but diversity is one thing it did well!
The Loud House is a series that is currently running on Nickelodeon. It has been a Nickelodeon hit series since 2016, and it has so far had 6 seasons consisting of 156 episodes. The series revolves around the Loud family, a family of 10 sisters and one single brother. The show is mostly focused on the brother, Lincoln, with some episodes focusing on certain sisters. The sisters, from oldest to youngest are Lori, Leni, Luna, Luan, Lynn, Lucy, Lana, Lola and Lily. Each of them have their own unique quirk, whether that be being good at a sport (Lynn), being a great musician (Luna), or even being filthy (Lana). The family often go through different sorts of adventures, some of which being adventures that most everyday families go through, with others being a bit more quirky than your average real life family. While the series is mostly episodic, there is some change as the series goes on, but none of these changes are huge. The Loud House has a lot to love! I love how there are so many characters, but all have unique quirks to set them apart, I love the comic book art style and I love the wholesomeness it has! While it is not as good as it was when it first aired, The Loud House is still pretty great to me! You can watch The Loud House on Netflix!
7. The Ghost and Molly McGee

I’m sure someone expected a Disney show in here somewhere seeing how I am obsessed with Disney, and I had to have The Ghost and Molly McGee in here somewhere! Now, this series was a standout to me because it includes a bi-racial main character who is half Irish and half Thai. The series is great at representing what our current society looks like - a mix of all sorts of races and religions. In fact, there was a whole episode where Molly was confused on her heritage, and was trying to find out where she truly belongs. Furthermore, while this is not direct, the ghost and Molly’s friendship symbolizes inclusiveness to me. The reason for this is because the two are clearly different in terms of their backgrounds, but once they meet, Molly is excited to have a friend, which shows kids that having friends that are not similar to you doesn’t have to be scary, and it can even be exhilarating!
The Ghost and Molly McGee is a series which aired first in 2021 on Disney, and is still airing! The series is about a 13 year old girl named Molly, who alongside her family moves to a rusty old house. Little did they know that this house has been inhabited by a ghost. Now, unlike most teenage girls, Molly wants to be his friend. He puts a curse on Molly, but that only brings them closer together! While he does not like Molly at first, he slowly opens up to her as well, and they eventually become good friends! Now, there is a lot to love about The Ghost and Molly Mcgee! Firstly, I love the designs and the brighter colors the show has. Furthermore, I love how vibrant the characters are! While The Ghost and Molly Mcgee is one of my less preferred shows from Disney’s more recent hits, I still have lots of love for it and hope it succeeds! You can watch The Ghost and Molly McGee on Disney +!
6. Amphibia

Now, I had to include this somewhere as it definitely has great representation for a variety of different races! The three main friend group consists of three girls, all of a different race - one of which being Thai, one being German and one being Taiwanese. Outside of the three main girls, many of the human characters are also represented through different races, which can be seen with the girl's classmates or even their principal. Amphibia has definitely done well with the representation, and they have shown how a normal society is with different races of people interacting with others, and not just sticking to one race in the series, like some do.
Amphibia is a series running from 2019 to 2022 on Disney, and has had a total of 3 seasons and 58 episodes through its runtime. The series revolves around Anne Boonchuy, a middle schooler, who steals a box with her friends Sasha and Marcy. However, they were in for a bit of a surprise. The box was actually a magic box, and once they stole it, they were transported to a new world, which is known as Amphibia. Amphibia differs from their regular world because it is full of frogs. When waking up in this new land, Anne realizes that she has been separated from her friends. Now, she must go on a quest to not only get back home, but to find them along the way to take them with her. She is originally found by a frog named Sprig, who came with the purpose of hunting her. However, after he finds her, they become good friends, and Anne moves in with them temporarily. However, along with meeting new friends like Sprig, she also runs into quite a few obstacles. Now, Amphibia is truly one of my favorite shows! I love everything from the characters to the humor to just the concept of middle school students getting sent to a frog world! It is definitely a great show, and I am glad to have found it! You can watch Amphibia on Disney Plus!
5. 6Teen

6Teen was another Canadian series that accurately captured Canada’s feel. In Canada, we have such a diverse range of people, and we get to see so many people mix around and mingle. In 6Teen, we have a mixture of different races among the main six characters, and we have the different background characters all from different ethnic groups. Seeing this accurately represented in a TV series was great, and it made me connect with the different characters.
6Teen was a series which ran from 2004 to 2010 for a total of 4 seasons and 93 episodes. It is about 6 teens who are 6teen! The teenagers go by the names of Wyatt, Jude, Jen, Caitlin, Jonesy and Nikki. They all just go through typical teenager situations that we all have been through, with some definitely being more insane than others! These situations are all that I am sure that we can relate to, whether that be the pressure of making money, the pressure of school, the pressure to impress a crush, you name it! Now, 6Teen is definitely a loveable series! Some of the standout attributes for me are the raunchy humor that was not overdone, the relatability and the development of certain characters (especially Caitlin). 6Teen is definitely an amazing series, and the diversity was a highlight! You can watch 6Teen on the YouTube channel Retro Rerun or on Tubi!
4. Detentionaire

I previously mentioned an underrated show, but now, we will be talking about what I think is the most underrated show! Detentionaire is a pretty unique show when it comes to diversity. The show takes place in a high school, and the different cliques that the school has is similar to cliques you would find in real life. Furthermore, the school has a bunch of different races and ethnicities mixing along. While many of the different characters in these cliques seem like stereotypes in the first few episodes, the series illustrates how while someone may seem shallow from surface level, they have much more to them. While the series is mainly focused on the main character, some background characters get shine on them, and we learn much more about them than we thought they had. Detentionaire did a great job at illustrating that all sorts of people are more than what we think they are, and that all people do go through different circumstances.
Detentionaire revolves around a highschooler named Lee, who on his first day of school, gets framed for a huge prank, and gets a year of detention for this. With some help from his friends, he goes on a quest to clear his name by investigating different students and cliques. However, early on, he realizes that whatever is going on is more than the prank. Instead, he finds out that the prank was just a small set piece that connects to this huge government level conspiracy. He is not the only person who has a connection to this conspiracy - his parents do as well! Due to his connection, he realizes that the whole world may be at stake unless he does something. Now, Detentionaire is so great that I do not know where to start - firstly, I would say that the characters all feel like what you would see at an actual high school, and as they open up, it makes them all feel very real. Furthermore, I love the plot progression - the show really starts with a prank in episode one, and by the final episode, he is trying to stop an ancient pyramid from opening up as an ancient species is inside, waiting to take over Earth. Finally, the mystery itself was a pleasure to watch as it had so much depth to it, and each answered question would open up many new questions! Detentionaire is one of my favorite shows, and I could go on forever talking about how amazing it is! You can watch Detentionaire on the YouTube channel Retro Rerun, or on Tubi!
3. Glitch Techs

Now that we already have a Nickelodeon show down, I might as well add another one to the list! Glitch Techs was another series that had great diversity! The series had two main characters, with one being a Mexican American, and the other one being a Japanese-American. The Glitch Techs (which is the name of the group as a whole) has a lot of members of different races, whether that be Zahra, who is an Arab-American girl that actually wears a hijab, or the Leader, Mitch, who is a Black British male. Now, I brought up these two in particular because they really stood out to me. I do not usually see characters represent their religion by wearing hijabs in animated TV shows, so it was amazing to see! Furthermore, I have watched lots of cartoons, and it’s rare for me to see a black character leading a group, which I always found sad as they are underrepresented! Seeing this in Glitch Techs made me really happy!
Glitch Techs is about two teenagers named Hector and Miko. The two often work together to stop “glitches”, which are video game characters that leave the game and try causing havoc on their world. Now, there is a lot to love about Glitch Techs, whether that be the concept alone, the vibrant and as I mentioned earlier, diverse characters, or the amazing designs that the series uses! Glitch Techs is an amazing series, and it truly deserved better from Nickelodeon! I hope that one day, it gets the continuation it deserves! You can watch Glitch Techs on Netflix!
2. Dead End: Paranormal Park

Now, I recently started Dead End: Paranormal Park, and I have to say that in the field of representation, it is spectacular! The series has a variety of characters of different races. For instance, the main character Barney is white, while his best friend/co-worker Norma is Pakistani. Through the series, there are many other characters coming from different races such as his boyfriend Logan, who is Vietnamese. Another thing that makes the diversity powerful to me is that each of the characters are being played by a person who is the same race as that character, which, to me, is going above and beyond to contribute to a diverse environment. Many shows do not do this, but Dead End: Paranormal Park stood out for this.
Dead End: Paranormal Park is a Netflix original that originally aired early this year for a season of 10 episodes, with plans for a second season to come out soon. Dead End: Paranormal Park revolves around Barney and Norma who were recently hired at a new theme park that is actually haunted. However, aside from being actually haunted, there is actually some big lore that is being built upon. From the first scene itself, we see Pauline Phoenix, the actress who the park is based off, get killed. This indicates what there is to come! Dead End: Paranormal Park is one of the more recent shows I have checked out, and there is so much greatness the show offers! I love the representation, the color choices they use and the horror elements (I will be rewatching it this Halloween! Dead End: Paranormal Park is a great show with awesome representation, and it is probably my favorite series that came out this year! You can watch Dead End: Paranormal Park on Netflix!
1. Craig of the Creek

I have seen many shows, but in terms of racial diversity, Craig of the Creek is outstanding! The series has had so much when it comes to racial diversity as we get introduced to so many characters of different ethnic groups. For instance, we have the main character, who is African American, but outside of that, we have Indian characters, East Asian characters, you name it! The characters are not only all there and have an important role, but these characters also all embrace their different ethnicities, and the specific cultures that the characters have are mentioned in the series! For instance, one of the Indian characters Raj, had a short dedicated to him and his grandma, where the main character Craig was trying to learn more about their culture. Acts like these go a long way as they encourage children to embrace their culture and to not be ashamed of it. Craig of the Creek also showed how so many different people can become great friends regardless of the ethnicity they are from. The main cast of characters are all so diverse, and instead of running from that diversity, they all embrace it and continue to spend time with each other.
Craig of the Creek is a series that is currently running. It started in 2017, and through its time, it has had a total of 3 seasons with 120 episodes. The series was about a young adventurous boy named Craig, who often goes on different sorts of adventures at this creek he lives near. He is accompanied by his friends Kelsey and JP. The adventures vary from episode to episode. Sometimes, they are more nature-esque in the creek, and sometimes they are more technical. Whatever they are upto though, is always entertaining to see. Now, with me, I love the character designs (with JP being my favorite), I love the characters who bring these designs to life, and I love the wholesome feeling that I get when watching it as it definitely has some touching moments. I am almost caught up with Craig of the Creek, and I have to say I definitely love it from what I have seen! You can watch Craig of the Creek on HBO Max!

ok, i'm game now Some theories and predictions after episode 4: -it is too often implied that the murderer is a woman, so i'm pretty sure that the murderer is a man. My top of suspects at the moment is something like: 1. Cliff, with his mother aware of his crime and covering him (i'm not sure whether it's a great addition to the whole parend-child storyline or a bit hackneyed as it has some parallels with Teddy&Theo story). May had an affair with Ben, may commit it to impress his mother and create something his own *Donna killing Ben in order to protect her son is also more than possible, it ruins the idea of "the say it's a woman so it's a man", but quite fits 2. Dickie - (crime of passion because of Ben eating cookies) any reason??? 3. Jonathan. Well, he was his understudy, sounds like a motive. OR maybe he tried to kill him for the first time, but he wasn't his killer after all 4. Tobert. Well, I think that they won't do the main hero's love interest the killer again, but if they do, he is kinda creepy and it's more likely to be him than Joy (who has already became a prime suspect) or Loretta Howard is cute in his own strange way, i don't believe it's Howard -The person who poisoned him and the person who was the reason he fell into the elevator shaft are two different people???? -I 1000% agree with the theory that Ben was speaking to cookies -In the first season it was Mabel's childhood friend who was killed and the story from their past, in the 2nd season Charles' father was on the painting, so the mystery is somehow connected to Oliver's past as he's already portrayed as the leading part in this season (but maybe his previous theatrical failures and his worries about the show is already such point, still there will be more flashbacks) -Poor Oliver will have a heart attack at the most inappropriate moment, probably in front of Mabel and Charles, making them, Will and all of us experience our own heart attack. Probably as a cliffhanger. I think in the episode 7 or 8. He lives, of course, but I'm ready to cry my eyes out -And creates the idea of final banger of the show (or thinks about killer's identity. or both) during clinical death. In the episode with his narration and some flashbacks. Creates another chaotic masterpiece and continues his work on the show almost immediately. Maybe agrees (with the face full of sorrow and whining) to quit dips if Will asks but never gives up on show and investigation. Then constantly boasts about his "death" like one of his acquaintances and says Ben beaten him. It's the most Oliver Putnam thing ever -I HATE the theory of Charles murdering Ben being in the white room and I'm sure it won't be true BUT this theory may be mentioned in the show. Like they'll finally find out it's not true, but suspect it at some point, Charles is not sure if he actually hasn't kill Ben, and maybe it will in some way be the thing that triggers Oliver's heart attack???? -I actually like the theory of Loretta being Dickie's mother, especially after the look he gave her at Look for the light. She's not a murderer, but the prime suspect for one or two episodes -Joy is also obviously pretty innocent, but Charles and her break up -Final episode will be more like season 2 than season 1: the true murder will be revealed only in the last ep. during another scene with Poirot-like false accusations. According to the trailer, with detective Williams there in the theatre, but maybe this takes place a bit earlier and the true killer revealed in another scene -Murderer reveal party is paralleled to and shown together with the episodes from the musical -This Mabel's wedding scene is either season 4 flashforward or staging used to reveal the murderer. I'd like to see the Theo as at least fake husband, but i think it will be Tobert. MAYBE the wedding will be aimed to expose Tobert himself, but I still believe he's too obvious to be the killer -Oliver and Loretta break up, but on a happy note grateful to each other, and Loretta finally goes to "take Hollywood by storm" after the show
(and Oliver and Charles end up together) -Mabel finishes podcast and then takes Cinda's job offer and moves out, still mantaining cute relationship with her old boys well it was a lot….

Season 3 Rewatch Drabbles: 3x12 New York City Serenade

Summary:  A series of 100-500 word drabbles to accompany my    rewatch of season 3 of Once Upon a Time.  There will be a drabble–either a deleted scene, a “fix it” fic or a character musing for each episode of the season.  Focus will be on Emma, Henry, the Charmings and Killian–with an emphasis on Captain Swan’s epic love story.

Killian tossed the bean into the churning sea and then jumped just as he saw the smoke of the newest curse billow toward him.  He let out a long breath as the portal closed around him.
He’d made it.
Now came the real challenge.  Before he’d left the band of heroes, Regina had told him she’d given Swan and Henry a life in New York City.  Killian recalled the one and only time he’d been in this New York.  It had been a land of noise, bustle and endless people.  It was a strange land where he could walk among the citizens dressed as a pirate of old, and no one batted an eye. (Aside, of course, from that group of giggling women who had requested he take a selfie with them, whatever the blazes that was.) 
How did one even begin to search for someone in this sprawling metropolis? Killian supposed he could always break into Baelfire’s apartment and use it as a home base of sorts while he waited if that proved necessary. 
The portal deposited Killian upon a sidewalk and he fell to his knees with a wince.  He got quickly back to his feet, looking around himself, pleased to see this particular sidewalk was largely deserted.
Killian glanced around to find that he’d landed in front of what may be a lodging house of some kind–an apartment building, he believed it was called in this land.  It seemed to be outside of the heart of the city, the sidewalk lined by well manicured trees and shrubs.
Perhaps he’d been fortunate.  Perhaps the portal had deposited him in front of Swan’s abode.  He strode toward the gate before the building and pulled at the handle.
It appeared to be locked tight.
Killian peered down at the lock and frowned.  It didn’t seem to require a key.  All he could see was some manner of keypad.  How was one to pick a lock such as this?
He was still trying to determine the answer to that when an elderly lady came to the gate and gave him a disapproving look.
“Just why are you loitering here, young man?” she asked, frowning up at him.
Killian bit his lip to keep from laughing at the “young man” comment.  If only she knew his actual age!  “I believe my girlfriend lives in this building, madam,” he said in his most charming tone, the one that got even Granny herself to blush.  “Emma Swan?  Can you help me get in?”
If anything, the woman’s frown deepened, and she folded her arms.  “I’ve met Emma Swan’s boyfriend, and you are not him.”
Killian ignored the nasty, jealous feeling the statement evoked.  It was vital he get to Emma as soon as possible and restore her memories.  He hadn’t time to reflect on the current state of her love life and the emotions that dredged up within him.
“I think you must be mistaken,” he lied smoothly.  “That relationship is at an end, and she’s with me now.” 
She continued to watch him carefully for another moment, and then nodded, turning toward the keypad and unlocking the door.  “Well, I can’t say I’m sorry to see the end of Walsh,” she said.  “There was always something kind of….shifty…about him.  I’m not sure that you’re any better, though.  Don’t think I can’t see right through that charm you ooze.”
“You find me charming?” he asked, flirting shamelessly as he followed her into the building and then surreptitiously glanced at the buzzer board in the entryway to find the apartment number he was looking for.  His grin widened as the elderly woman finally blushed.
“Don’t let it go to your head, young man,” she said, turning to open an apartment door on the ground floor.
“I wouldn’t dream of it.”
Killian was still grinning from the encounter as he climbed the stairs until he’d reached Swan’s floor, but the grin was replaced by nerves when he reached her door.  Was he ready for this?  Was he ready to see her again and see the lack of recognition in her eyes?
Would his plan to bestow a True Love’s Kiss on her work to restore her memories?  He knew she cared about him; he’d seen it in her eyes when they’d bid each other farewell at the town line.  Was it enough to break a curse?
He took a deep breath and then stood taller, looking at the door determinedly.  There was only one way to find out.
Taking one more fortifying breath, he raised his fist and knocked.

Five minutes later, Killian hobbled down the stairs and back out onto the sidewalk, his heart smarting as much as his nether regions at the failure of his first plan.  Aye, it had been a long shot that his True Love’s Kiss would work.  Perhaps her feelings were not as strong as he’d hoped they were.  Still one hardly wished his kiss to his beloved to be followed by a swift knee to his groin. 
For a moment, as he got his bearings and began making his way toward Baelfire’s abode, Killian allowed himself to feel the sting of rejection, but then he firmly put it aside.
So his first attempt had failed.  He still had the potion.  Aye, he had hoped to give it to the lad after his kiss had restored Swan’s memories, but he could adapt.  It was time to rethink his approach and strategize.
Getting through Regina’s memory spell was going to be quite the challenge, but he loved a challenge, and he loved Emma.
She was worth fighting for.

After two whole years of waiting, season 2 of What If is finally here!
And just as long in the wait is my ranking of every episode:
9: What if Captain Carter fought the Hydra Stomper? (The Watcher says he doesn't do sequels normally. I can see why, that wasn't all-too interesting
8: What if Strange Supreme intervened? (Strange has an entire heel-turn and decides to sacrifice multiple powerhouses to resurrect his world. I know he said he had "plenty of time" to watch over Killmonger and Zola, but it seemed like WAY too much
7: What if Hela found the Ten Rings? (While I haven't seen Shang-Chi, Hela's arc and the martial arts were pretty cool to see [Even if martial arts are too "show-offy" and "egotistical" to me]
6: What if Kahhori reshaped the world? (This one feels kind of weird to be put in a what if kind of setting, as most of it is completely new ideas for the MCU. Not exactly unwelcome, just odd
5: What if Peter Quill attacked Earth's Mightiest Heroes? (This felt like an entire Avengers movie crammed into half an hour, yet somehow it works
4: What if Happy Hogan saved Christmas? (Happy does a Die Hard as Nando pops off at the return of the Hammer
3: What if Iron Man crashed into the Grandmaster? (It felt good to finally see this episode after it was cut from the season 1 lineup, and it was a fun Christmas gift
2: What if Nebula joined the Nova Corps? (An interesting Blade Runner-type noir. Definitely one way to open a season
1: What if the Avengers assembled in 1602? (I was probably most excited for this one and was not disappointed. It definitely felt like it had the most identity out of the rest
Well that's all the episodes ranked. Hopefully season 3 won't take as long to come out. And since we already have a preview of an episode, it just might come sooner...

I'm fine with Haven being my number one but I'd like to bump Teen Wolf off there. My Willow fic will overtake it soon but I still need another fandom to push it off completely!
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
A Wedding of Errors - Teen Wolf, Allison/Lydia, Rated T - Wedding Planner AU and my first (and only?) Big Bang fic! It had beautiful at and I still follow the artist though it looks like the post got deleted in a blog rebrand or something.
Not a Rebound - Supergirl, Winn/James, Rated E - Post season 2 episode 1 smut I wrote to make myself feel better after they nerfed Kara/James for no reason! (we know the reason 😑)
No Time Like the Present - Young Justice, Jamie/Bart, Rated G - Short little future fic of Bart having a panic attack and Jamie helping him out. First time I wrote something and was like wow that was like writing writing!
Uninvited - Elementary, Gen Sherlock & Watson - pod together project I had to ask for a co-writer to help pinch hit this for me because I was struggling. It was strange to co-write, especially with a stranger, but it was interesting and the podficcers seemed to have fun!
ShapeShift - Teen Wolf, Stiles/Danny, Rated T - AU based on a Bollywood movie I found on Netflix and became obsessed with called Pyaar Impossible. Also a pod together project!
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? Sometimes. I like that ao3 has the unread comments on your front page, so I like to keep them there so I can see them and smile at them when I'm scrolling through the suggested marked for later stuff. If someone has commented multiple times, I'll usually thank them on the most recent one rather than replying to all of them. Of course if someone asks a question I'll answer. Otherwise it depends on my mood.
6. What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? I was gonna say I try not to leave fics on too an angsty note but then I remembered Garder le Silence my Harry Potter pod together that's an episode of Potterwatch during book 7. It's pretty moody all the way through.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Probably A Wedding of Errors. It's the only fic with an epilogue so you actually have a little time after the couple gets together. Hmm should I write more epilogues? 🤔
8. Do you get hate on fics? I got an angry comment on Wedding saying it was a bad f/f fic because I spend too much time on the side m/m/m love triangle. Honestly that was something I was worried about and if the person had just been disappointed, I would've understood but they were just mean so fuck em.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? a little! increasingly more so last month lol some light d/s, with a lot of silliness and communication
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written? nah I don't love the idea of crossovers. Usually I'd rather have a full AU
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? i don't think so?
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes! Wedding was translated into Russian in 2015, two years after I wrote it and the translator made a little banner for it!

😭 it is so crazy to think someone thought about my fic so much they put it in another language! I am in awe of them. Umi no Iruka you can ask anything of me. You can throw me into battle like a pokemon. I am in your debt.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Just Uninvited!
14. What's your all-time favorite ship? Bakugou Katsuki/Midoriya Izuku from My Hero Academia. I have never written a fic for them and I probably never will. It's a classic case of, if I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more. 🥺
15. What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will? Hmm well I don't usually post anything unless I've finished it. I did start a series of fics for a glee rare pair but I am nOT going back to that. I have the last installment in my Winn gets fucked series like 90% done I literally just need them to fuck and I can post it. I have a couple Haven WIPs I probably won't go back to unless the hyperfixation comes back in a big way.
16. What are your writing strengths? Dialogue, calling back to things earlier in the fic, estimating the word count of a story, which I didn't think was a strength but lowkeyed said it was their weakness so i guess!
17. What are your writing weaknesses? Description of places blegh, coming up with events for people to do between plot points, describing how people move and gesture? I can see things so clearly in my head it's so hard to describe! it's like "and then they do the face they did in episode 6 where they were like hmnmm you know??" impossible! I should've become an artist!
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? I would love to if I knew the language well enough but unfortunately I'm english only. I've thrown in a few lines sparingly but I think there's definitely some cool stuff that can happen if it's used right by someone who understands the language well.
19. First fandom you wrote for? I think Jimmy Neutron? I got into fandom young lol
20. Favorite fic you've written? Whatever I'm currently working on is my favorite! I love creating so much and I'm ecstatic imagining all the scenarios and tweaking them over and over and living in their heads and surprising myself when I come up with things I didn't plan! So by that measure my favorite is my unpublished Cyrano inspired romcom but if we're going published, I of course have to go with Multivocal, my heart ❤️ or perhaps A Familiar Sound, my soul! ✨

I am somewhat satisfied with the ending (except doil injoo not being the endgame lets talk about that later) but there are few things i wished to see differently.
1. ⁠The villain takedown was not satisfactory. I was left confused about the dynamics between sangah & jaesang. His character was definitely much more than just killing himself at one order of his wife. Especially when did see him overpowering her in the past. Also, I wanted a more painful end for Sangah.
2. ⁠The functioning of Jeongran Society. I was left confused whether the other members were aware of Sangah killing people in the name of the society? We do know that her dad was actively involved in murders but they dealt with it poorly considering they focused so much on it in the beginning. I was confused whether it was an actual foundation to help underprivileged children & then kill them off once they were no longer useful? Like how & why? I was strangely very much interested in the cult so imagine my disappointment that they didn’t clear these things.
3. ⁠Romanticising Hwayoung’s actions: unpopular opinion but hwayoung isn’t the hero the drama made her out to be. she intentionally dragged injoo into this mess by giving her the money. her happiness my foot. she ain’t dumb to not know what she was putting injoo into while living lavishly herself in singapore. She intentionally dragged Injoo in all the mess & gets away with only a sorry? just because she saved her life in Singapore when she was the reason why Injoo landed in danger in first place. I still don’t get her motives. if she indeed cared about injoo then she wouldn’t have given her the money at first place knowing how sangah has been grooming injoo using her. she would’ve sent injoo far away from anything related to sangah. they want us to feel bad for her? she used injoo’s naivety as well for her own benefits just like others. & the fact that she actually hired an innocent person to get killed in her place is so damn fkd up. all this just for a revenge? i am glad doil wasn’t involved in her plans because i had a theory that they were working together to bring down sangah. still mad that injoo forgave her just like that because she saved her life in singapore but not even a thank you to doil when he has protected her at each & every step 😭
4. ⁠Doil’s closure with his family. I know the story wasn’t about him but just a scene with him & his parents wouldn’t have hurt. Especially when his life was directly impacted by the evils of Jeongran Society. I wanted to know how he & his mom survived the accident? What happened to his dad? Argh if only.
5. ⁠Hyorin’s reaction to her parents’ death. No matter how evil they were, jaesang & sangah were still her parents & they should’ve shown atleast one reaction from her. Ah well.
6. ⁠One scene with the Oh sisters together in their new apartment. They should have given us atleast a reunion of them being happy together one last time.
All in all it was a fun watch. The screenplay was engaging with beautiful cinematography & great acting from everyone. I still think they needed 2 more episodes to wrap up things in a more convincing manner. 8/10 for me (deducting one point for the above mentioned reasons & one for no doil-injoo endgame)

Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs. Organized by which ones (in each category) I’m enjoying the most.

Ongoing Series - Thai
The Eclipse (Fri YT) Ep 7 of 15 - Screw you GMMTV, that was a dream kiss? That’s some Kdrama bullshit, that is. Still Aye is such a good character, so perceptive, I ADORED his interaction with Kan. Neo is doing an epic job with that role. That was that softest achey stolen kiss in the world. Also this ep = Beach frolic trope and a Make It Right moment.
Vice Versa (Sat on YT) Ep 11 of 12 - DOOM EP was not very doom for an ep 11 (except for the acoustic guitar). Pluen goes back because of what Tun did accidentally, not him, which honestly I kinda like as a twist. I was very confused about the “month long tidal inaction,” did the alt universe have extra moons or something? 
My Only 12% (Fri iQIYI) Ep 7 of 15 - a tear jerker this week and likely next too. Also piggybacking across a bridge, two tropes in one. We about to get the time jump which is going to be interesting. 
Work from Heart (Thurs YouTube) pulp office drama featuring lots of couples starring Gameplay. Started dropping on YT so I picked it up and stuck it into rotation. Poor Dee, his gramps is so overactingly bad, mean, evil, and homophobic. Still there is a sweet little masked meet cute. There’s a bunch of drama around a workplace and other couples all over the rainbow, so that’s fun. Sort of SCOY goes to work. There’s some nifty linguistic stuff going on so I’m actually enjoying this pulp trash. Shocking. Truly TERRIBLE wardrobe tho. And I don’t love Nammon w facial hair. 
Love in the Air (Thurs iQIYI) Ep 6 of 13 - Not a bad episode, I wasn’t mad about it. But that’s kind of how I am with MAME, it’s always up or down and last week’s a cappella counter liftt situation rough, so I’m glad this one was a bit of a break. DUMPSTER FIRE TRASH WATCH ALONG HERE.
Fahlanruk (Sun GaGa) 2 of 12 - I do not like the narrative framing technique of the female blogger/whatever. Her character does not belong in this show. What she hast to say is unnecessary, pat, and boring. In other news we got into KP bathroom territory really quickly. “Do you really like him or do you just want to win?” would appear to be the premise of this show. Both characters are players, cheaters, flirts, and anti-heroes. They better both be deeply wounded or the narrative can’t save them. I’m assuming Sher made himself this way after some similar player type broke his heart. Not sure about Fah. That said, I do like how very gay, switchy, and verse these two are. Although a complete change of underwear in the middle of a sex scene was weird to say the least. I like the side dishes. No surprise there. Still I’m not sure I can take 12 episodes of this nonsense. I contemplated a trash watch but I’m not feeling snark-inspired just sad about it.
Linguistics corner:
Fah is using phi/nai or nong (in a belittling way) with Sher. Sher is using guu/mueng with Fah, Which is highly inappropriate and rude with a phi. These two are linguistically combative, to say the least. Also the show has all the wifey language your a little heart could possibly desire.

Ongoing Series - Not Thai
Takara-kun and Amagi-kun (Japan Thurs GaGa & Viki) 6 of 8 - No new Ep 6 this week. Have a lovely Shūbun no Hi if you celebrate. Otherwise it’s a good tome to be self reflective and contemplate about life balance etc.. around the Autumnal Equinox. 
Once Again (Korea Fri GaGa) 3-4 of 8 - It’s a little bit more creepy than it is romantic, but it’s also weirdly amusing (this strange kid just keeps hugging him - that’s like 1000x even weirder in Korea than most places) and more enjoyable than it has a right to be. It’s a really interesting take on the childhood crush trope among other things. JaeWoo must seem like SUCH a weirdo to JiHoon. I guess what I’m saying is, it’s odd but tense and well acted, which is a nice change for BL.
More Than Words (Japan indie subbed by furritsubs - TIP ‘EM if you like em!) Adaptation of Etsuko’s two mangas In The Apartment + More Than Words. Has a violent crazy beginning but it is necessary for the story. About a lonely neglected/abused girl and a cheerful kindly popular boy who go to school together and become besties. When they get part-time work at a restaurant, a cute older gay boy enters the picture. This is classic Japanese close-filmed melodrama, and it isn’t a BL. But it is excellent. Can’t be relied on to resolve happily, or even resolve at all. I’m engaged even knowing this, and I love this subber so I’m gonna stick with it.

It’s Airing But I’m Not Watching It
War of Y - too hard on my soul. Will I watch it eventually? Maybe? Probably not. I think we have and ITSAY situation going on here. Also BL Express was not best pleased, and I while we rarely share taste, in this instance I trust their reporting.
My Tempo - a Thai BL movie about the Thai music industry. Yeah, no thank you. 
Oh My Sunshine Night - I’m scared it’s gonna be sad, so I’m waiting for spies to tell me it’s safe

Finished This Week
Coffee Melody (Mon Viki) Ep 10fin - (I am assuming episode 11 is a bts or music video.) The family dinner with the new bf was endearing awkward. We had a classic Korean one year time jump in the last five minutes of the final episode. (Which shoudl be left to Korea. Actually, even Korea should get to have it anymore. We’re done with this trope. I say this on behalf of the international viewing public.) My side crumbs got a cute little mutual kiss, unfortunately ALSO multiple sing your feelings tropes. (Will I ever get a week of BL without this trope?) It will be a long time before I forgive this BL for muffling Pavel’s light this way, I know he can do better. Very disappointing. Ultimately this show is so forgettable I’ve pretty much already forgotten it. 5/10 JUST DULL
Papa & Daddy 2 (Mon GaGa) Ep 8fin - It was a standard execution of the “marriage finale” endemic to most romcoms, just v. gay. I do like that my second lead syndrome got a little prospective action. Did I tear up at the wedding? Of course I did. We have established this before, I am a sap. All in all, this was a serviceable follow up to the first installment in the series, if riddled by unbearably unlikable parents, lack of story, and sappiness. 6/10 WORTH WATCHING BUT FLAWED 
About Youth (Taiwan Mon GaGa) Ep 7-8 of 10 - I thought this was a 10 episode arc so I’m a little sad to find it ending this week. Are we ever going to get an explanation about what happened with the side dishes Taiwan really likes a romantic “one boy balances another boy on wheels” thing. I really wanted Guang to leave his awful parents but Im glad he at least threw the test. And I really appreciated that he sent a video since it was a way for him to accurately communicate his feelings without being interrupted. Cute final kiss! Very squee-worthy. Rainbow was a little on the nose. tho. All in all it was great little BL. Classic YA low drama but high angst, I didn’t even mind the singing, and that’s saying a lot. I wish it had been given a bit more space to breathe, but all in all a great edition to the Taiwanese Bl lexicon which was in dire need of a good sold high school BL. Full review here. 8/10 RECOMMENDED

In a Forbes interview the executive producer of Semantic Error (and CEO of AXIS CPP) revealed that AXIS production will be opening Blue by Blue, a drama label whose first BL project is about vampires. Interview here. 
Kimmon and Copter are reported to star on their 7th BL together, a romantic comedy series, Boy Never Smiles. KimCop aren’t the longest running pair (MaxTul, BoomPeak, OffGun, and KarnNut trade that crown around) but they may now have the most BLs under their collective belts. 
New Thai BL from Uncommon Studio Midnight Fortune adapted from a Y-novel by wickedwish for 2023. The MDL and tag lines are bonkers so I’m not dignifying them here. 
Cutie Pie is getting a least one special episode, The Wedding, we assume.

I’m saving Toasty for the end of this post because I have so much stuff to say about his arc
first - Max and his parents
Max is already a terrible character
but why is he comfortable with his parents
in episode 1 it’s shown they have abused him and episode 8 shows they won’t hesitate to give him away to a strange lab if he acts feral, like wtf, I hate those 2 (and his sister too)
THAT’S YOUR KID! TREAT HIM LIKE YOUR KID AND PROTECT HIM! WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU!
Max is also abusive (which I’m going to talk about in the Toasty section)
second - James, Louise and Patrick
As someone who was neglected, I think James’ parents did neglect James (and Louise was also shown to turn her kid into a smart phone despite the fact he was SCREAMING in pain)
Louise doesn’t care about James, the only person close to a parent he has is Mr. Mcfly, HIS TEACHER!
Mr. Mcfly is probably the only character suit to be a parent in this show!

third - Toasty / Declan
A abused kid portrayed as the VILLAIN?! HUH?!
Why are his abusive fathers (James and Max) A HERO?!?!?! WTF!!!
James is overbearing and strict (and killed his OWN SON!) and tries to justify him throwing his son’s dead body in the trash!
Toasty has been abused and traumatized by James and Max, Max just sees him as an experiment and doesn’t hesitate to make his life a living hell, no wonder why Toasty snapped, BECAUSE MAX AND JAMES ARE ABUSERS!
Max never cared about Toasty, won’t hesitate to kill him (same can be applied to James) and doesn’t care when HIS OWN FUCKING SON DIES! Max should stay the fuck away from kids and never be a parent again! I just want to kick and hit Max, he’s so awful
James did kinda try to care but thanks to the worst character Max, he just wants Toasty for toast (same as Max) and even though he tries to become a better parent, he fails, I hope he doesn’t have the chance to become a father again
Toasty is a victim of abuse and should have been redeemed but nope, they just had to kill him, turn him into a waffle maker and say that he’ll cause destruction again! this isn’t how you write a 13 YEAR OLD TEENAGER WHO HAS BEEN TRAUMATIZED THANKS TO 2 FUCKING IDIOTS
I just wish Toasty had a better arc (and also get away from James and Max)
how about James and Max become the villains and Toasty is a hero who escapes from them and at the end gets adopted by Mr. Mcfly
he’s also isolated from the rest of Dirt, and was never taught morals, which is why I think he went on a rampage, he doesn’t know that what he’s doing is bad, he just thinks he’s doing the right thing, and honestly I just want to give him blankets, hugs and headpats and tell him that it’s not his fault he was abused, and that he deserves better
fuck Max, James, Max’s parents, Louise and Patrick, I hope someone kicks them
This is why Oddballs disgusts me, I’m pissed off and the writing of this show feels like a slap in the face.

In 1962, Taiwan's first TV station "Taiwan Television Company" started broadcasting. On November 8 of the same year, Li Tianlu "Yi Wanran" was invited to perform the traditional puppet show "Three Kingdoms" with a Hokkien pronunciation on TV. This was the first time that Taiwan TV broadcast a puppet show. , but the ratings were not high, and it was canceled after only 25 episodes (each episode was 50 minutes). The person who really made the puppet show shine on the TV screen was Huang Junxiong.
Huang Junxiong's first puppet show on Taiwan TV was "Yunzhou Da Ruxia", which was broadcast on March 2, 1970, with a total of 114 episodes. Summary:  A series of 100-500 word drabbles to accompany my    rewatch of season 2 of Once Upon a Time as an attempt to finally jump    start the muse again.  There will be a drabble–either a deleted scene, a    “fix it” fic or a character musing for each episode of the season.  Focus will be on Emma, Henry, the Charmings and Killian–with an emphasis on the very beginnings of Captain Swan’s epic love story, as soon as a certain dashing pirate makes his appearance.

Hook stood at the wheel of the Jolly Roger looking out at the horizon as he sailed determinedly out of Storybrooke.
They’d all gone mad.  All of them, even Swan.  What manner of fools these heroes were.  Willing to risk all of their lives–the lives of everyone in the town–for the miniscule chance of saving the Evil Queen, of all people.
The Evil Queen whom they should rightly want to see dead for her part in trapping her in this strange little town in the first place.
He’d returned to town with Greg and Tamara, seduced by their vow to help him kill his Crocodile once and for all, but it had been the work of mere moments to realize the pair were blithering idiots, mindless zealots for a cause they didn’t understand at the behest of a master they didn’t even know.
When they’d revealed the full extent of their plan to him–destroying the town and everyone not born in this land, he’d realized he’d been an utter fool to throw in his lot with them.  Aye, their plan would kill the Dark One, but it would also kill everyone else in this town, including him.
Including Swan.  How she’d so thoroughly gotten under his skin, even after she’d betrayed him–twice: once on the beanstalk and then again when she locked him in a broom closet in New York–he didn’t know.  All he knew for sure was that she’d been right.
The two of them understood each other.  There was some manner of tether connecting her to him, one that he hardly had time to ponder with the end of the word staring him in the face.
For a split second he’d actually considered staying the course, letting the failsafe do its job and ridding the world of the Dark One forever.
But then he’d remembered the conversation he’d had with Regina in the mines. Do you ever think this constant pursuit of revenge is the reason we have no one to care for us?
He’d spent centuries hunting his Crocodile, willing to do all manner of dastardly deeds in the furtherance of that goal, but this … this was a step too far.  Hook had never minded committing villainous acts to those who deserved it, those who got in his way, but Greg and Tamara proposed massacring an entire town of innocents.
It was the height of bad form.
And so he’d turned to the heroes, and for a moment he’d thought they’d found a solution to their problems–until Queen Snow had convinced the rest to go along with her hare-brained scheme of tossing the failsafe into a portal.
He’d taken his leave then, ready to wash his hand of the entire town–heroes, villains, all of them.  The only one he could depend on was himself.
As he continued to sail, he looked down at the sparkly magic bean in his hand, and his eye caught the letters he’d carved into the helm on that day so many years ago.
Bae.
He’d let the boy down, serving him up to Pan on a silver platter, as it were.  Of all of his deeds, that was perhaps the one of which he was the most ashamed.  He’d chosen himself over the boy, over his Milah’s son.
And now he was doing the same to Bae’s lad.
Hook closed his eyes as the pain washed over him.  He didn’t want to be that man any more.  He’d made the selfish choice centuries ago, but he needn’t repeat that error.  He blew out a long breath and then pocketed the bean, slowly turning the wheel to head back into port.
This plan was still reckless.  It was still stupid. 
But it was the right thing to do.  He might well perish in a matter of hours, but at least he would die doing the right thing.
He would die a hero.
Notes:  Sorry for the delay!  I got caught up writing birthday fics, and this rewatch drabbles series fell a bit to the wayside.
–As you can see from the title, this particular chapter kind of encompasses both 2x21 and 2x22.  The truth is, there wasn’t much in 2x21 that inspired me, aside from themes I’ve already explored earlier in the series.  In contrast, I really, really wanted to explore things from both Hook’s and Emma’s perspectives in the events of 2x22, so I decided this was the best option.  Combining 2x21 and 2x22 and writing a chapter from each character.  Emma’s reflection should be up (assuming the muse cooperates) tomorrow, and then it’s on to Neverland!

Chronotrek: TNG S1 Part 1
For those who are seeing this in their tags for the first time- before this, I'd only seen the Abrams movies and a handful of episodes across the various Trek serieseseses. I've been doing as close to a blind, chronological viewing as possible, only shifting between shows at the ends of seasons (not jumping around if there's time travel involved.) So far, I've gotten through Enterprise, S 1 Discovery, Short Trek/TOS Pilot, Disco 2, Short Treks, Strange New Worlds, TOS, TAS, and the 6 TOS movies. I'm now venturing into The Next Generation.
The first 6/7 episodes have given me the following observations:
1- I hate how leaned back the chairs in the front are. Reminds me of my person's car and how I always have to pull up the seat because it feels like I'm laying down and can't drive.
Hey, I've heard of Q. Why would Picard assume that Q knows 1) what a phaser is and 2) what setting it is on?
I'm kind of glad that they immediately went to having a musketeer beam aboard lest someone think this is a serious show lol
Was that engineer in shorts? Oh... some of the men wear _skirts_? Let me look something up... Skants. I feel like this needs that Will Smith gif about he's a little confused but has the spirit lmao. That's a terrible name, though (as is skort tbh and that one's real).
There's a _battle bridge_? And you can separate the saucer? I guess that's how they get away with this being a ship with families on it, though I'm not really clear on WHY they have families aboard. Is it intended to be away from spacedock for years on end? Or a generational ship?
Why would they do such a risky maneuver (separation at speed) just because they don't know what Q is?
Riker looks so silly clean-shaven. My mental image of him certainly includes the beard.
Fun fact: I have a cousin named Ryker after Riker.
3- Why did everyone hate Wesley so much? That's basically all I know about the character- that fans hated him. And that it's Wil Wheaton.
silly!Picard is ridiculous. Such a contrast to the mental image I have of him.
5- Still pulling everyone off the bridge (away from their consoles) to chat, huh? What if something were to happen that required quick response?
Four eps in and Picard has basically surrendered twice?
Riker is... comically oversized compared to the rest of the crew.
6- I really don't understand why Wesley was so hated. I mean he's pretty obviously someone's self-insert (or supposed to be the relatable figure for the younger viewers) akin to the teen heroes of dystopian fic. He's basically just Trek's version of Anakin or Luke. But usually male fans eat that shit up. Was it mostly the older TOS fans who didn't like him because he's young and 'obnoxious' and not 'paying his dues' etc etc bc the older fans saw him (and young fans) as a threat to their egos and their perceived superiority in trekdom?
8- Oh so they actually leave the captain on the bridge now? Reminds me of our houseboat trips on the lake in ROTC- I much preferred being XO to CO- I got to be hands on instead of just giving orders. The CO wasn't allowed to _do_ practically anything.

10 characters who won’t show up on Strange New Worlds
so, I keep saying that if Strange New Worlds had been all new characters, I would enjoy it more. I stand by that assessment, but since they set it when they did, with whom they did, I really hope that they would make use of what we know about that timeframe and some of the connections these characters have. This is my wishlist, though I’m not expecting any of them to actually show up.

10. Lorca Prime - Prime!verse counterpart of the Mirror!verse captain on DIS
We never found out what happened to him, so what if Mirror!Lorca just locked him in a box somewhere and Enterprise finds him in SNW? Bonus points if Pike and Lorca were boyfriends at Academy and Pike didn’t understand what happened when he heard what Lorca did on Discovery, and made it his mission to find out, which is why he knows about Mirrorverse when no one else should.

Although Gary Mitchell was in only one episode of Star Trek, he has an outsized role in fanfic as Kirk’s past boyfriend, and/or best friend, and/or Starfleet villain. Is he really the misogynist asshole the little we see of him pre-ESP-boost implies? Or can he be redeemed?

7. Gabrielle Burnham - mother of Michael Burnham, main character in DIS
Okay, technically, the crew of SNW exists in a time and reality in which Michael theoretically succeeded in taking Discovery 930 years into the future. If that is the case, Gabrielle actually can’t show up in SNW era time and reality. If she had time jumped back in time to the year SNW is in now, it would be into a reality in which Michael had not succeeded . . . right? I don’t know, but I’m interested in solving this time paradox if it means I get to look at Sonja Sohn some more.

6. Admiral Sulu - early 3000s Sulu time traveling back to his early years
Okay, so I lied. This is not a list of people from the time period that Star Trek should take advantage of. It’s just a list of cool people I want to see. But why can’t Sulu have some time travel adventures late in life? I would pay to see them, personally, and would enjoy it much more than if they choose to cast yet another Sulu and introduce them to the bridge.

5. T’Pol - Vulcan first officer from ENT
I am not a fan of Star Trek: Enterprise and I am certainly not a fan of T’Pol. But it would be nice to see treatment of this character without a cat suit and without the bigoted, jingoist attitude of ENT. I am here for extremely old and gray statesman T’Pol.

4. M’Ress - officer from The Animated Series
 It’s not wrong that I just want live action cat people that are not the movie Cats. I think it would be very cool if she was a cadet and friends with Uhura.

3. Guinan - bartender on TNG
Guinan is old as fuck and was alive during this era; I don’t care if Goldberg is too old to be younger!Guinan; they can make this work; I believe in them.

2. T’Pau - Important Vulcan in an episode of TOS as well as several eps of ENT
I fucking love T’Pau and always wished we got more of her being the perfect badass that she is. Maybe we could get the backstory on why she turned down the seat on the Federation Council.

1. Gaila - background character in AOS ‘09
Here we are, the reason I made this post. I’m in love with Gaila. I think she is now my favorite part of the ‘09 movie. I love seeing Orions in Starfleet and I love what fandom did with her--she’s often one of Kirk’s best friends at Academy, and a big damn hero. I would lose my mind if she was on SNW, especially if she was BFF with Kirk aboard the Farragut.
