Memorial Pole To Be Returned To The Nisga’a Nation After 93 years.
The pole "was acquired in 1929 by Canadian curator and ethnographer, Marius Barbeau, on behalf of the Royal Museum of Scotland, which later became the National Museum of Scotland (NMS), and went on display the following year.
"However, NMS said that while the museum acted in good faith in its acquisition of the pole, it now understands that the individual(s) who 'sold' it to Mr Barbeau did so without the cultural, spiritual, or political authority to do so on behalf of the Nisga’a Nation."
"Carved from red cedar in the 1860s, the pole [37 feet] includes family crests and animal and human figures. It commemorates the Nisga’a warrior Ts’aawit and stood outside his relatives’ home for 70 years before being removed while villagers were away for the annual hunting season."
"The museum agreed last year to return the pole, which has been on display since 1930."

The towering, hand-carved totem pole is being rematriated, not repatriated, and after being put into a sleeping state on Monday
“It was a wonderful occasion,” said the National Museum of Scotland curator, John Giblin, after witnessing the spiritual ceremony to begin the pole’s complicated 4,200-mile journey.
The museum and the Nisga’a delegates are calling it a rematriation, a challenge to the patriarchy and a word that makes sense given that the Nisga’a are a matrilineal society, said Parent, whose Nisga’a name is Noxs Ts’aawit (Mother of the raven warrior chief).
The ease with which the return has taken place is down to a National Museums Scotland policy change on the return of disputed objects, which was decided in 2021 and makes the museum more open to requests.
It has led to what is the first totem pole return by any UK museum.
Giblin would not be drawn on whether other institutions should follow suit.
But he believes the right thing has been done, albeit leaving a sizeable gap in Edinburgh.
“I would personally love there to be a new pole, carved by the Nisga’a nation, in the gallery,” he said.
“We have had conversations with them. If we did do that it wouldn’t be a replica … it would be a pole designed collaboratively that would tell the story of the relationship between the Nisga’a nation and Scotland – both its history and our aspirations for the future.”

Wanna purchase some beadwork? Live in Canada but have conflicting feelings about it's history and want to support the Indigenous people that live here? Do you just feel fed up with Canada Day nonsense?
Here are some beadwork artists in MY neighborhood that you should check out!
C'eldzïn Beadwork! I've bought her work before (the bisexual earrings) and she was kind enough to change said earrings to clip-ons for me! Her work is gorgeous and I highly recommend it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Small Town Earrings!! They have very cute beadwork pieces, including some Pokemon and LOZ themed ones!!! I highly recommend their work as well!
Tumblr media
Strong Blood Creations!! They're a trio of Indigenous women that create and distribute beadwork; I bought a hair clip from them recently that was absolutely gorgeous!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Carmen Redunante! She's a Nisga'a/Chilean artist who sells absolutely gorgeous beadwork as well as other jewelry, prints, and and tapestry!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
More artists may be added later!!
This post was brought to you by: an almost exact same thread I did on twitter that I posted right as the entire site imploded so I decided to share the artists here so that they'd actually get traction! Twitter sucks

Hey, I saw your reblog asking about whether the Twilight series could do anything to make amends for the wrongful impact they've had on the Quileute Tribe and the answer is just very plainly: No.
I, personally, am not a part of the Quileute Tribe, but I am indigenous (Gitxsan/Nisga'a), and although it would be much better if the words came from the mouth of an actual member of the Tribe, I feel it is my job as a fellow indigenous person to explain why there isn't a way to rectify the misdeeds that Twilight has done.
I'll try to make it simple and short so as to not take up too much of your time:
Even if every single penny that the series makes goes to the Quileute Tribe, and there isn't a single bit of misinformation to be seen or heard, and the Tribe is portrayed in a way that actively promotes the Tribe and its peoples, the deep impact that the original series had can never be erased or washed away. The cultural and monetary effects that the series had on the Tribe is irreparable. In no way can they erase the grief and pain that the Tribe endured, and if they go through with this then it is just another mockery of the Tribe and its people.
Not to mention, there is a deep racism ingrained within Twilight, and if they took that out then it would no longer be Twilight anymore, which is the exact reason that this series can in no way rectify any of the problems it has created. The foundation is based on racism and misinformation, and if you take the foundation away, then everything falls.
TLDR; In no way can the new Twilight series make up for the misdeeds it has done to the Quileute Tribe and its people because the damage that was originally done on the Tribe is irreparable.
👍 Had a feeling it'd be something to that effect, but I frequently desire to know the Why along with the answer itself.
Thank you for your concise explanation, Anon. I'm sorry about what Smeyer and similar thoughtless media has done, and I hope other content creators learn better and do better in the future.

A stolen totem pole is set to return from the National Museum of Scotland to Canada.
To the Nisga'a nation, an indigenous group based on the West Coast of Canada.
This totem pole is very important to them and was stolen a century ago.
The Lourve in France has made a agreement with Italian authorities after finding 7 pieces that were very much not taken legally.
And those 7 stolen pieces are set to return to Italy.
The USA has returned 266 stolen antiques to Italy.
👀Do hope this pattern continues.

How about some good news for a change?
Here’s hoping that this precedent inspires Canadian museums to follow suit.

This is a commissioned illustration for the @endangeredlanguagesproject based on the theme of language revitalization. It will be used in the near future for their new website. I decided to illustrate a raven calling, these beautiful corvids are known for their brilliance in imitating sounds and speech. My artwork is a way for me to learn words in the Nisga'a language, kind of like cue cards. It is a pleasure to be a part of this project as ELP celebrates and works to strengthen endangered languages, what they do is so awesome!

Lunar New Year is the beginning of a lunar calendar or lunisolar calendar year, whose months are moon cycles. The event is celebrated by numerous cultures in varying ways and at diverse dates. The more well-known celebrations include New Year's Day (or week) in the Chinese calendar and related national calendars, the Hindu and Buddhist calendars of South and Southeast Asia, and the Islamic and Jewish calendars that originated in the Middle East. It is also celebrated by other cultures, such as the Nisga'a people of Canada. The determination of the first day of a new lunar year varies by culture.

So, I'm writing a flash fiction piece right now for class and it's meant to be about the overarching theme of 'climate' - so I am writing a piece that briefly describes the volcanic eruption that wiped out two villages (mine included) in the Nisga'a valley 263 years ago.
okay well "ash in the air like snow" was almost verbatim what I was writing and then I went "...wait a second this sounds famil- WAIT"
I AM NOW A PART OF YOUR REAL LIFE
