Alexander 💀
(English translation under the cut.)
ALEXANDER HACKE: I already knew Rudi from the Die Haut days. I was a guest singer on their last record, Spring. I also did some tours with Die Haut. At the beginning, I found him a bit suspicious - pretty boy Rudi. I didn't know if we could work together. I didn't really know his work and I was afraid that he was just a poser, and a Bavarian one at that. A pretty boy from Munich and Einstürzende Neubauten - and that was supposed to work?
RUDOLF MOSER: One night at Ex'n'Pop, Alex strutted up to me and said, 'Hey, pretty boy Rudi, forget about the idea that you're going to be the drummer of the Neubauten!' At that [text cuts off]".

“Din Djarin’s identity as a Mandalorian will always be central to his character, and his devotion to his orthodox religion, warrior’s creed, and its chivalrous code of honor is a truly noble one.”
and
“Din Djarin’s devotion to his creed has fundamentally isolated him from love, his role as The Tribe’s breadwinner was as unsustainable as it gave him purpose, and the fierceness of his faith stems from unprocessed trauma and the guilt he feels as an orphan and a foundling. His views on what it means to be a Mandalorian were narrow until he met others who didn’t conform to his own creed, and in this, his status as an voluntary oathbreaker is equally as integral to his character.”
…are both takes that co-exist in my mind.

when the poll ends do you mind sharing what you vs your friend thought the key hockey concept was? I'm so curious !
yes !! so skill play ended up winning, but if you combine the two categories of fighting and physical play, they add up to way more. this came up because i'm currently going through a whole emotional journey around violence in sport and the way personal choice, bodily autonomy, and the monolith of sports culture can overlap and conflict. that's not super important but i think more people should think about it because it's a really interesting and tough topic. anyway, i was talking to my friend from rural BC, and we were talking about violence/physicality as an inherent part of hockey or if there was a way to mitigate dangerous injury while still maintaining the spirit of hockey as a sport.
she was of the opinion that physical play, fighting, all of that were essential to hockey, and there was no way to play the same game without them. i'm still working on what my opinion is, but i'm finding that more and more i come down on the side of, hey, all of these injuries are unnecessary and there's no reason for hockey -- contact sport though it may be -- to be this dangerous and injurious. there's a lot of reasons i feel this way, but one of the biggest ones is that when i think of hockey -- when i think of the most important, joyous, exciting moments in hockey, moments that made me genuinely love this sport and the place it holds in my life -- i think almost entirely about skill play. what makes hockey worth watching for me is the speed, the skill, the insane passes and bad-angle goals. kirill kaprizov sidney crosby trick shot type shit. when those players have room to play, i love this sport like nothing else.
my friend, on the other hand, isn't wrong when she says that overall, the impression people have of hockey tends toward violence. even if they haven't thought about it enough to pass judgment, the vast majority of people think first of checks and fights.
the problem i have is that a lot of times, skill players are stifled by physical play. i like puck possession, but checking turns that into an almost irrelevant part of nhl hockey, and i like when superstars have space to do insane things, but if they're injured half the year because every fourth liner in the league pretty much has free reign to headhunt without the refs blowing the whistle, i don't get to see any of that. it's the same reason i'm annoyed with the way kirill's been treated in the league -- he's a phenomenal player who can do unparalleled things on the ice, but his production has been down because he got injured a couple seasons ago and hasn't had the space (or protection from further injuries, looking at you, dops) to heal it fully and get back to form. in what world is that the best that hockey can be? i'd rather every skill player gets long, obnoxious nhl careers than keep fistfights in a sport that really doesn't need them, but i'm aware i'm in the tiny minority there.

one last bg3/amity thought for the night --
it is so goddamn funny thinking about how astarion admits he set out to seduce the player character specifically to win their trust and their protection, with amity in mind.
like... congrats, my man. you picked the one person in the party that would have died for you immediately. from the moment you met. even after putting a knife to her throat. you could've attained the same result by doing absolutely fuck all; you did not have to do All That.
but you did. and now you've caught feelings. ya fool.

i want to be a machine learning engineer but some of u guys r making it embarrassing actually. long but IMO important explanation below. We have bigger issues to deal w and better things to focus on.
like our planet is dying and the commercialisation of massive AI models and training the models themselves releases like hundreds of thousands of tonnes of carbon emissions. and this includes very "nonessential" models that don't tend to contribute much to society (re: new fancy image generation toy). but u have decided your new career path is "AI artist" (glorified prompt-writer?) .
and just as bad, some of you have decided the biggest issue w AI is those people, the glorified prompt writers!! you draw more attention to it instead of focusing on the real problems behind AI and the ethics of training models! about the harm it causes to the planet, about web-scraping limitations basically not existing (stolen art falls under this domain), copyright laws to do with AI, the way facial recognition deals with race, about the boundaries between letting AI learn and develop in an "unbiased" way vs preventing sociopolitical damage at the cost of (potentially) further progress.
conversely, there is nowhere NEAR enough focus about how AI can help us overcome some of our fundamental problems. i love machine learning bc i find it - specifically the maths behind it - fascinating and i believe one day it could help us make very cool advancements, as it already has. i think the mathematical architectures and processes behind creating new deep learning models are beautiful. i also know the damage capitalists will inevitably do - they always wield powerful, beautiful new tools as weapons.
AND HERE YOU ARE FALLING FOR IT! it's very frustrating to watch!! if you're angry on behalf of artists, i'm begging you to protect the rights of artists and be mad at greedy companies instead of villanising a tool that can help us immensely! learn about AI ethics, learn about how it is present in our lives, what we should try to stop, what we should promote.
if you "boycott AI" as a whole with no desire to gain more literacy on the topic other than "steals art therefore bad", you will have to be against your translate app, your search engine, your email spam filter, almost everything on your phone that categorises anything (i.e. pretty much all of your search functions), NPC enemies in games, your medical diagnostic tools, your phone's face unlock, your maps app, online banking, accessibility tools that help blind and deaf people, new advancements in genetic sequencing and protein folding and treating cancer and modelling new solutions in physics and so on and so on.
the issue isn't all AI as a whole. the issue is A) how companies are using it and B) how a lot of you guys are getting mad at the concept of AI instead of responding to A.

i understand that the way language arts is taught makes the whole study of literature and narratives and themes and such seem like a boring, pointless endeavor. but it is so important to me and my sanity that you pay attention to the information presented to you in those classes. because it is integral. you will never be able to approach art in any form and come to your own, unadulterated conclusions and interpretations. you will not recognize propaganda when it is being spoonfed to you. and you will not understand that yes, the messages of the media and the art you consume do in fact subtly change your psyche and that’s why you can’t just blindly consume shit

I saw a few people mentioning the possibility of Eddie choosing to distract the bats knowing that he wouldn't make it and while I'm not saying that's true (I haven't watched the show, remember? I don't know what's going on most of the time) it does kinda make sense thinking of his character. Eddie knew that just because Vecna got defeated it didn't mean people would stop accusing him of murder. And even if they found a good cover story for him, some people will still think it was him. It would never be the same. The guy took the easy way out and painted himself as a hero in the eyes of the people he cared about. A win-win situation, right?
With that information in mind, I want you guys to remember the little moment between Dustin and Eddie- more specifically when Eddie said "I didn't run this time, right?". Following the show, yeah he didn't. He has run back then when Chrissy got cursed and then when Patrick also got cursed, but he didn't this time. BUT, if we assume that Eddie knew he wouldn't make it... we assume that it was Eddie's plan all along to die in the Upside Down...
He actually did run this time. He run away from what was going to follow. That no longer was an ask for validation of his development, it was Eddie trying to lie to Dustin and himself. He was trying to convince himself he didn't run this time. That he actually was courageous and protected Dustin from the demonbats.
But deep down he knew he has run, just like always. Because that's what he's good at, running away from problems. He died knowing that Dustin's words were a lie- that he really was no hero, only a coward.
He died for nothing. He died because he was afraid.

Okay, wow. There is no way on Earth Neal Shusterman could have predicted the rise of AI art coming literally weeks after Gleanings came out, but that doesn't make that last bit of dialogue any less socially relevant. This short story's gonna hit me extra hard after all the talk of creating empty art cobbled off the stolen works of others, isn't it?

Thank you for the most succinct comeback to Whatserface’s idiocy I’ve ever seen. No waffling, no trying to argue your point, just a quick ‘there is something deeply wrong with you’ and a block. Beautiful. She’s going to keep trying to link your name now and get you to unblock and debate her, because that’s her kink or something. I’d suggest reporting her, and blocking any of her followers who try to debate you for her by proxy. I’m sorry, you are right that there is something deeply wrong here.
She can do whatever she wants bc I've already forgotten her username 💖
