3 January hair pinned up at restaurant in Virgin Islands. Harry's "might as well.." Tattoo first seen. Covered with Ferns now.

4 January - Taylor's blue dress on a boat. Harry bite bruise on his hip

7 January -Harry back in London, date People reports that they broke up. Reports Scott swift told them to slow down.

9 January - photos of Harry in Richard Bransons hot hub on front page after the break up. (I often wonder what the less famous people think now that they treated him poorly as a kid and he is massive now). Gordon Smart (1:12, warning he follows it with a bad anecdote about 18 year old H), who worked on media for One Direction, said in 2020 that Harry had said:

"Simon Cowell actually paid me to do some media training with them back in the day so I met them before they were massive and they were again really lovely kids. [...] I wrote a front page story about him sharing a jacuzzi with a girl on holiday and he told me it was bollocks and we still ran it, because we had a picture of him in the jacuzzi. It was probably totally innocuous and I really I'd like to apologize unreservedly to Harry for that because it was an error of judgment on my part and it probably tarnished our friendship."

Richard Branson also has gross sounding comments about this 18 year old that day.

21 January - Taylor in London reports she saw Harry

23 January - Taylor in Madrid before performing at the '40 Principales Awards'

26 January Both at NRG Awards, 25 January Taylor posts Cannes Sunset situation. They both stayed in the Intercontinental Carlton Cannes Hotel.

1 February - Harry's 19th birthday. £5k tab, messy, wild party. Rumour that Taylor had booked a week in Italy which was cancelled

6 February - Savan Kotecha (WMYB writer) gave interview where he said 1D want to be write but can’t. His last 1D credit is Happily and in 2017 praised (45 mins) Harry’s writing.

10 February - Taylor at Grammy's, night Ed says inspired Tenerife Sea

21 February - both attend Brit awards - Taylor performs I knew you were trouble with Harry in the audience. In march she told the Sunday Times "Well, it's not hard to access that emotion when the person the song is directed at is standing by the side of the stage watching." She goes to an afterparty with Tom Odell and out with him the next night. Tom writes Country Star about Taylor and Harry wrote Happily about wishing they were together. Ed is asked if he would trust Harry around his girlfriend and he said “well he trusts me around his girlfriend so yeah I do. We’re friends we don’t do that.” Harry went on Nick Grimshaw from 6am a hungover.

23 February - 3 November - 1D Up all Night tour, start in Europe

7 March - Taylor sells Hyannis Point House at $1m profit

15 March - Taylor vanity fair article. Says Harry pursued her for a year before KCA, better part of a year after and it fell apart one night in London when he went out and he’s texting her to ask to see her again at the time of the interview. Pointed mentioned she was born in 1989, Easter egged wonderland, talks about Connor being 2 months and insignificant. Implies Harry was a rebound from JG and Connor was a Harry rebound. Says she’s looking for someone who is interested in her not her wiki page.

11 April - Louis says 'Taylor Swift' after Harry sings "I'm in love with you" in Little Things

20 April - Red tour break till the 25th; One Direction tour break starting in Manchester till Paris on 29th. Louis stays in Europe,

23 April - Harry arrives alone in LA without the Peace ring

24 April - Neither Harry or Taylor seen. The day Harry got the ring

25 April - First day Peace Ring is seen. Harry has dinner with Rod Stewart, Rod then plays the Troubadour and Harry stayed at Rod Stewarts house. Taylor in Cleveland

28 April - Harry posts photo of sunglasses on beach. Taylor photographed in a gym in Los Angles. Wears the ring to leave LAX and there is an absolutely insane mob because he is there alone with no security.

29 April - Arrives in Paris alone, still wearing ring, described as a riot. The ring is in This is Us in Paris

April 30 - Taylor buys Holiday House Rhode Island for $18m cash

1 May - Everything has changed released as single

7 May - Harry goes on a party bus in Norway, photos of him drunk, with blonde and talks about party bus in interviews

18 May - Taylor posted rose’s with a Great Gatsby quote: “Just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer...“

27 May - Taylor wrote Wish you Would

June - September Midnight Memories written with Happily

12 June Taylor on Grimmy, he says Trouble is the “best song ever” 4 times at 11 mins. Best song ever was released 22 July. :)

13 June - Never Gonna Dance Again tattoo seen when Harry got off a yacht in Miami, seemingly drunk, he was underage at the time lyrics from Wham song "Careless Whisper" about regret for being unfaithful. Grimmy had referred to it in September when Harry sung the song on radio

16 June 2013 - Louisville - Harry was feeling himself during “Last First Kiss” and at the end was flirting with someone in the crowd, he mimicked pole dancing then he kissed his heart tattoo

22 June - Taylor and Selena getting ice cream in Mystic Connecticut, near RI.

28 June - Harry seen with Paige

1 July - Harry cross tattoo NYC stayed at the Bowery Hotel NYC

6 July - both play in Pennsylvania, Taylor has a week off after, unseen. On the 8th Harry was sick on stage.

20 July - Harry on Ryan Seacrest in Niall’s place and says the rest of the band went back to uk on their break but he stayed in LA.

22 July - Best Song Ever released.

30 July - September GQ cover story where they badgered Harry about how many people he’d slept with (two)

August 14 - Lover Journal: August 14, 2013, Watch Hill RI. Says she feels like a tiger in an enclosure, feels hunted, talks about paparazzi and cell phones. Also calls herself a rabbit, a flower growing in a sidewalk that is picked and how photos ruin a moment, online photos/comments and 'level of possession'.

25 August - VMAs, texting each other and shade, together at afterparty. Sang purple rain together at after party.

3 September - Harry tweeted 1975, Matty Healy told an interviewer that went from 4K followers to 15k in 10 minutes and they exchanged numbers and texted, made plans to meet up and he stood Harry up.

1 November - 1D, Katy Perry and John Mayer take photos backstage at a Japanese radio station in Tokyo. New Romantics was written about Taylor being sad her ex had gone to Japan with his new GF.

November -j14 article where Harry says ok to get back together with ex. Also reports Taylor is house hunting in London.

13 November - Taylors first Victoria Secret show where she wears a union jack dress in NY and performed IKYWT. On 14th Harry in UK for Gemma's graduation, TS in NY for billboard awards.

18 November - Courtney Cox said she hung out with each of them at her house in Malibu

20 November - Harry has dinner with Kendall Taylor tweets ""I've listened to "Hold On" by @ColbieCaillat 45 times today. So on repeat. So important." on the 21st when dinner reported.

22 November - midnights memories release party in la with Ryan Seacrest

23 November, both at AMAs, gold dress. Kendall PDA reported but no record of it

25 November - Midnight Memories released with Something Great written with Jacknife Lee who also worked on Red.

3 December - Lover Journal - December 3, 2013, Sydney.

6 December - Harry leaves Kendalls hotel and they have breakfast. Lunch the next day.

12 December - One Direction in Milan, record the Xfactor final interview with cushions on the floor.

13 December - Taylor posts a series of photos to IG about a rose garden party in Melbourne, Australia while on tour for her birthday. Many think 1989 will be called Roses. The captions made a sort of poem "Roses. Red Balloons. Pretty.... Sparklers. The best birthday I've ever had." Which could be a dig at Harry, Roses being common Haylor imagery, his tattoo and she famously said her 2012 birthday was her best ever when he took her to the Lakes. Harry's "better still be my winding wheel" tweet. Harry posts his Cannes photo December 14.

15 December - One Direction performs Midnight Memories on Xfactor UK Final and Harry arrives at Kendalls London hotel at 2am.

17 December - Harry got injunction banning paparazzi from outside his home. Harry likely had moved into his current house. First confirmed at Ben Winston's with Morgan Spurlock in April 2012, Harry later told Rolling Stone he stayed there 20 months. He was seen house hunting in July and reports of his house were September 2012.

21 December - midnight memories MV filmed

Good riddance, 2022. I wish you all a happy and kind new year.

Books Read: 9

I’m happy I went out on a high note with reading. Despite the rather unpleasant reread of Gender Trouble, everything I read this month was good (which is because I mostly reread things I already knew I liked). I’m not a huge fan of Shelley’s poetry, but it wasn’t painful or anything. And I discovered that I actually do like Virginia Woolf. I don’t know what my problem was the last time I read Mrs. Dalloway, but this time I loved it!

Russian and Chinese bombers carry out joint patrols and trigger South Korean and Japanese jets

Russian and Chinese strategic bombers, including the Chinese long-range Tupolev Tu-95 "Bear" and H-6, conducted joint patrols over the Sea of Japan and the East China Sea, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported on November 30. South Korean and Japanese fighters were activated to accompany the bombers.

The South Korean military previously said they mobilized fighters when two Chinese and six Russian warplanes entered their air defense zone.

The Russian Ministry of Defense said that "at certain stages of the route, the strategic missile carriers were accompanied by fighters from foreign countries". The Tu-95 were escorted on the route by Su-35 fighters.

“An air group composed of strategic missile carriers Tu-95MC of the Russian Aerospace Forces and strategic bombers XIAN H-6K of the PLA Air Force carried out air patrols over the waters of the seas of Japan and East China,” the ministry said.

He said that Russian and Chinese aircraft “act strictly in accordance with the provisions of international law” and that no foreign airspace has been violated.

“For the first time in the history of air patrolling, Russian aircraft landed at an airfield in the People's Republic of China and Chinese planes landed at an airfield in the territory of the Russian Federation,” the ministry said.

The Chinese Ministry of Defense described Wednesday's patrols as part of the "routine" of an annual cooperation plan between the two military personnel. Chinese and Russian bombers carried out joint patrols in the same area in 2019, 2020, 2021 and in May of this year, when President Joe Biden met in Japan with leaders of Quad, a multilateral grouping seen as an effort to contain China's growing influence.

The Tupolev Tu-95, known by NATO as "Bear", along with the Tu-160, is the backbone of Russia's long-range airborne nuclear forces. It was designed to launch nuclear bombs in the United States in the Cold War.

“And now,” Tsubasa said as the cheers began to fade, “we have a surprise for everyone tonight. A special guest that needs no introduction.” But I’m going to anyway because I love her and want to sing her praises. She added silently. “A legend among school idols, whose legacy continues to inspire more generations of school idols. Especially at her old alma mater, which remains open to this day, thanks in no small part to her efforts.”

Light blades in the audience were already changing color. They knew. And that pleased Tsubasa greatly.

“Everyone, please give a warm welcome to Kousaka Honoka!”

Cheers erupted from the audience and those that hadn’t already, changed their blades to complete the sea of orange across the stadium.

Tsubasa turned to see pretty much what she expected, a blushing orange-haired young woman walking tentatively across the stage toward her.

“Mohhh… Tsubasa-chan.” Honoka practically pouted. “You didn’t have to build me up so much.”

By the gods, Tsubasa wanted to hug her. Kiss her. Proclaim to the audience, and the world at large, that she had the privilege, nay the honor, of dating someone as wonderful as Honoka.

But that could cause a scandal that would mean trouble for the professional careers of A-RISE. And while she wasn’t particularly worried for herself, as the group’s leader, she did worry about Anju and Erena. Despite the fact that both had assured her that whatever happened concerning her relationship with Honoka, happened.

Their support had been an absolute boon for Tsubasa, although she knew some of it came from the fact that they were themselves hiding their own relationship from the public. And their production company.

“Nonsense.” Tsubasa replied. “Everyone is excited to see you. Look!” She swept an arm out to indicate everyone gathered in the audience. “We’re excited to see you.”

Honoka glanced at the other two idols on stage.

Anju smiled. “Of course we are. We even wrote this song with Honoka-chan in mind.”

Erena nodded. “It’s been a long time coming that we finally get to share the stage with you.”

Tsbasa held out a hand to her girlfriend, shoving aside any further concerns about interacting with her in such a way.

This all may have been a surprise for the audience, but it was still a planned event. The higher ups at the production company had known about it since the beginning. Everyone involved knew full well that Honoka retained an avid fanbase, even after having retired as a school idol months ago. And the bond between A-RISE and µ’s was also well known.

The group had already collaborated with Nico, the only µ’s member to continue on as a professional idol. But the desire to invite Honoka back to the stage had been strong enough that fans even asked about it on the forums with surprising frequency.

Well, maybe not all that surprising.

“Come, sing with us, Honoka.” Tsubasa resisted the habit of using the casual honorific she reserved for when they were out of the public eye.

Finally, Honoka smiled and accepted Tsubasa’s hand to be led to their starting positions.

Anju and Erena flanked the couple. The music started. Opening moves and poses were performed. And the four began to sing.

It took a few months for the Nintendo 64 for a new game, and when it game it met with glowing reviews. I do remember playing this slightly as a kid, and distinctly remember having a lot of trouble with it due to being awful at it. However, it was only short goes as it was a friend’s copy of the game.

Wave Race 64 is a jet ski racing game. Not only do you have to complete the circuits, but you have to pass buy buoys on the correct side. Miss one and you’ll lose some power, miss five and you’ll fail that race.

Just a quick note about widescreen screenshots: some emulators can try to expand the view of games to work in widescreen, but a lot of games have issues with this. A few games have unofficial widescreen patches and some have action replay codes to make it run in widescreen. A very small amount of N64 games have widescreen support built in. For Wave Race, extending the view worked a charm, and the game looks great.

It’s difficult to get across the look of Wave Race in screenshots – the ocean and how it moves is the main impressive part of the game. The ocean moves in a realistic way and it still stands out as water in games is still not easy to do today – to the point that it’s really games that are entirely focused on water that have proper wave simulation (games like Sea of Thieves). The water is also not just for looks – it affects the movement of your jet ski and you’ll have to work out how to race using them to your advantage.

The levels in Wave Race also manage to feel distinctive, which is not an easy task for water based games. While I’ve just praised the waves a lot, one stand out level is Drake Lake – which doesn’t have waves. The level starts off foggy but clears up as you progress, with the lake having a silvery reflective surface. There’s something really beautiful about this level, even today.

Another very memorable one is Southern Lake. In this level, the tide is going out. Each lap, the obstacles will be different due to the level of the water. A big pier blocks the way on the first lap, but you can zoom through its supports on later laps. Unfortunately, the game only has 8 courses (plus a bonus training course)

There are three main difficulties in Wave Race, however the difficulty doesn’t just alter the enemy racers. Instead, the locations of the buoys are different, making navigating the levels much more difficult. You need to truly master the waves to succeed at the game and your reward is reverse mode, where you race across the tracks backwards, which makes the levels feel a lot different.

Outside of the main championship mode, Wave Race offers time trial and a stunt mode. You can set your own high stores in the stunt mode as you have to make it to the next checkpoint while hitting rings and performing tricks. The other main move is a 2 player race.

Wave Race 64 doesn’t contain a lot of stuff, but there’s so much detail in what it does do that it makes up for it. It’s a really fun game that rewards skill and offers a significant challenge. Wave Race got a sequel on the GameCube, but there’s nothing out now that’s quite the same.

In one respect, Wave Race parallels the ground-breaking brilliance of Super Mario 64 in a way that Mario Kart 64 doesn’t

Disasters at sea trigger ship-safety advances

When one of the world’s largest container ships crashed into the bank of the Suez Canal in 2021, a major gateway for global trade became blocked with an estimated $9.6 billion in daily commerce being held up.

Accidents like the one involving the Ever Given almost three years ago are more common than might generally be thought. They also help explain the motivation behind EU research projects to improve shipping safety.

Ship shockwaves

In 2022, 10 cargo vessels were lost at sea, according to global insurer Allianz. Shipping transports 90% of the world’s goods.

‘Anyone reading this will, for example, be wearing something that was at one point transported by a ship,’ said Jorgen Grindevoll, chief executive officer of Ladar, a UK company developing collision-avoidance technology for vessels and marine infrastructures.

Maritime accidents can send shockwaves across the globe by hindering trade, damaging the environment and endangering lives.

‘When ships run into trouble, it can be very disruptive,’ said Grindevoll, who is also a sea captain.

He was part of a research project that received EU funding to develop a lookout that never sleeps: sensor technology to reduce the risk of ships colliding with other vessels or objects floating in the water.

Called MARINA, the project is wrapping up after almost three years. Its participants have included Ladar, Cypriot shipping-technology developer Offshore Monitoring – also the project coordinator – Norwegian sensor-technology company Hjelmstad and UK-based Global Maritime Services, with captains and navigators from the sector represented.

The researchers looked at serious ship mishaps and found that almost half involved collisions and that, of those, 59% occurred as a result of human error, according to Jena Dover, business development manager at Global Maritime Services.

‘This shows how important this problem is,’ said Dover.

Surface scanners

MARINA’s lasers, high-definition cameras and thermal imaging scan for floating obstacles such as containers, timber, sailboats and fishing gear, helping onboard navigators detect possible threats on the water surface – their main blindspot.

An artificial-intelligence algorithm can automatically detect, recognise and track objects and then alert crew to any potential threat. That’s beyond the ability of existing best-available technology on the market.

‘A ship can already scan underwater using sonar and above water using radar,’ said Grindevoll. ‘But around the surface there’s a sensor gap. That’s what we’re addressing.’

Flood focus

But if the worst does happen and a ship is struck, damage limitation is crucial to save lives and equipment.

This is what another EU-funded project sought to do. Called FLARE, the project ran for three and a half years through November 2022 and came up with design improvements to limit damage from flooding in stricken vessels.

‘There’s still a number of areas where our designs and procedures could be safer,’ said Dr Stephan Wurst, managing partner at Germany-based BALance Technology Consulting, which led the project.

For instance, damage from groundings – when a ship’s hull hits the sea bottom – can be catastrophic.

In 2012, a cruise ship called the Costa Concordia ventured too close to the Italian island of Giglio and struck rocks. The accident led to the deaths of 32 people, the partial sinking of the vessel and a €1.5 billion salvage operation.

‘We looked at better design principles that can prevent water from entering everywhere, but also how to improve evacuation and safety procedures,’ said Wurst.

Computer simulations of how ships sink as well as the simulated sinking of model boats in a controlled environment helped the researchers pinpoint where these improvements need to be made.

A detailed list of the project’s recommendations has been presented to the International Maritime Organization, the governing body for the shipping industry.

They range from blocking water in a ship with watertight doors and barriers in the hull to fixing holes with foam, according to Wurst.

Ripple effects

While the proposals are still being evaluated by the IMO, the project’s participants including the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland and UK-based cruise line operator Carnival are applying the knowledge gained in their new vessels.

‘This isn’t just theoretical research we did,’ said Wurst. ‘The lessons we learned here might actually save lives.’

In the meantime, the surface-scanning technology developed by MARINA is close to being commercialised. Grindevoll expects it to be market-ready by early 2024.

He said the technology may have uses beyond preventing ship collisions, such as on crewless vessels and surveillance of offshore installations like wind turbines.

‘We have realised our technology can also be used in other areas,’ Grindevoll said.
