I got so caught up in the end of the year shenanigans I forgot about my December wrap up post! I didn't read a whole lot, December is usually for speedrunning holiday gifts, but Liar's Knot and Bone Shard Emperor are also pretty long so I'm happy about getting through them!
The Parable of the Sower by Octavia E Butler ⭐⭐ - I know this is a Classic™️, and I see the merit of it, but wow do I need some sort of respite in books that are this grim. The romantic subplot also squicked me out lmao
The Liar's Knot by MA Carick ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - LOVE! Amazing worldbuilding! Lovable flawed characters! The drama! The heists! The sword fights! Derossi Vargo! Also love that it came with a "the story thus far" bit at the beginning, huge fan of that
The Raven Tower by Ann Leckie ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Screaming at this book. I want to pick it apart and see how it works. Eolo is having, like, the WORST week. I can see why this would trip people up, but it's so fascinating! I loved it!
The Bone Shard Emperor by Andrea Stewart ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I am screaming at Jovis, the lovable idiot (affectionate). A great sequel to a great debut. Wasn't sold on the reciprocation of love here, but I'll deal with it for the magic fights and literal and metaphorical mountains Lin must climb.
An overall good month of reading, I think! I hope 2024 is kind to all of yall, happy new year! :)

December Wrap Up
Good riddance, 2022. I wish you all a happy and kind new year.
Books Read: 9
I’m happy I went out on a high note with reading. Despite the rather unpleasant reread of Gender Trouble, everything I read this month was good (which is because I mostly reread things I already knew I liked). I’m not a huge fan of Shelley’s poetry, but it wasn’t painful or anything. And I discovered that I actually do like Virginia Woolf. I don’t know what my problem was the last time I read Mrs. Dalloway, but this time I loved it!
The Ordinary Princess by M. M. Kaye - 5 stars ®
Selected Poems by Percy Bysshe Shelley - 3 stars
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley - 4 stars ®
Gender Trouble by Judith Butler - 2 stars ®
Thelma by Marie Corelli - 4 stars
The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Other Poems by Samuel Taylor Coleridge - 4 stars
Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf - 4.5 stars ®
Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys - 4 stars ®

December 2023 Wrap Up--
Tumblr media
December was yet another insane reading month. It's good I threw my goal to read fewer books out the window back in July because otherwise we'd be in some real trouble this month. I ended up reading 3,543 pages across 15 works this month. Let's get to the list.
Comics/Graphic Novels- 1. On A Sunbeam by Tillie Walden (library)--3.25 stars.
2. Freshman Year by Sarah Mai (NetGalley)--3.5 stars.
3. Nimona by N.D. Stevenson (library)--4.25 stars.
Novellas/Short Stories- 1. A Rare Gift by Jaci Burton (library)--2 stars.
2. Mistletoe & Margaritas by Shannon Stacey (library)--2.75 stars.
3. This Time Next Year by Alison Kent (library)--3.5 stars.
4. Unexpected Gifts by Elena Aitken (library)--2.75 stars.
5. Hidden Gifts by Elena Aitken (library)--1.5 stars.
6. Unexpected Endings by Elena Aitken (library)--1.75 stars.
7. The Christmas Guest by Peter Swanson (library)--3.5 stars.
8. Mistaken Gifts by Elena Aitken (library)--1.25 stars.
Novels- 1. The Ex-Mas Holidays by Zoe Allison (library)--2.75 stars.
2. Defiant by Brandon sanderson--3.5 stars.
3. Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes--3.5 stars.
4. The Ruined by Renee Ahdieh--3 stars.
This gives the month an average rating of 2.85 stars. That feels very low for me, but I was trying to read from a TBR while allowing myself to read any holiday book or novella that came under my nose during the month. Which probably wasn't the best idea. I realized I need to be more selective with my romance novels/novellas.

December Wrap Up
What the fuck, how is the year over? I'm finally home after an extended visit with family over the holidays on account of the whole blizzard thing - a whopping 13(?) days of sleeping on the couch and eating Christmas candy and not knowing what day it was - and now you're trying to tell me that it's 2023?? In this economy??
Things I Wrote
Babes, I wrote nothing. I wrote zero things. Not a single writerly thought entered my brain this month.
Things I Read
Word count is going to skew a little higher this month because I *finally* read the final chapter of LaOHA (started way back in April and very poetically finished on Dec 31). Also, a large number of fics can be attributed to holiday group reads over in the RoR discord server. I'm delighted that we're making this a little holiday tradition 💝
Additionally, I was lucky enough to lend my voice to a podfic project. Over 20 voices came together to bring All I Want For Christmas (Is For You To Stop Talking) to life, with a chapter released each day leading up to Christmas. It was such a fun way to experience the story, and you can find the podfic version here!

Kingdom Come by @inadaze22 and @jaxxartbox - Chapter 10 (dramione, E, 4.9k)
Things I'm Currently Reading (Heading into 2023)
Well, shoot. I made a whole little list for myself in my notebook. Titled it "To Read Before End of Year" and everything. And yet (and yet, and yet).
So I guess heading into 2023, I have 9 WIPs I'm following that I need to catch up on. I started both Chosen by 5moreminutes and Disappearances by @batmansymbol this year (one as part of a group read and the other listening along to live recordings). Life happened and I never finished either, so they are top of my list for 2023. We had also started Contradictions as a group read before life rudely got in the way there, too. Never fear, @ambpersand my love, my horny deranged screams are coming for you this year!!
That's all for now, my doves! I hope you all had a lovely holiday season. Stay tuned for the annual summary stats post for 2022!

I forgot what I wanted to write as introduction (again), but who cares. To everyone’s surprise, I did read books in December!
Reverie (Ryan La Sala): To prepare for the end of the year I took a look at the TBR I posted in January and realised there's still quite a few books on it I did not touch this year, ahem. Reverie was one of them! It was an interesting read. Like not my favourite but damn, I am so starved for everything speculative fiction. So I ate it up. When I read in the author's bio at the end that Ryan La Sala watches anime and started out with Sailor Moon, suddenly a lot of the book made sense. The friends group with magical powers, the over-the-top battles, the flashy villain(ess). Very anime. But I like anime, so all is well.
Too Like the Lightning (Travis Beaudois): For Christmas I wanted to give my friend a cheap little gay ebook as a bonus to the other gift. On her wishlist though was only some strange book, apparently written by a 12-year-old and unedited and maybe it's still good, but I felt I'd rather give my money to a person who actually has taken the time and effort to edit their book. A while ago I read a recommendation for Too Like the Lightning here, so I picked it up to check if it might be something my friend might like. It's a cute book. Nice characters, nice development, really feel-good atmosphere. I liked it! But I also know my friend reads for the porn und I honestly couldn't remember the smutty scenes afterwards. 8D I mean, there were some. And they weren't bad. My ace-brain just does not remember. Cute book, though.
In the Middle of Somewhere (Roan Parrish): I decided against Lightning for my friend and thought about what other book I could pick instead. A review of Lightning compared it to Roan Parrish which was one incentive for me to buy Lightning in the first place because I really liked the one Roan Parrish book I read before. But that was vol3. Gifting vol3 would be weird. I should go with vol1. So I borrowed it from the library to test-read. xD And damn, it was good. Definitely a lot more spicy and intense that Lightning, but also funny and real nice to read. Daniel was more interesting than he appeared to be in vol3. And aw, when Leo had his first appearance! And then Will, too! That was fun. While reading Lightning and Middle of Somewhere back to back I noticed how weird it is to have stories with just two characters interacting and no one else around. Consequently my favourite scene of the book was when Daniel, Rex, Leo and Will spent Halloween together.
Where we left off (Roan Parrish): Afterwards I told my other friend how I'm done with the dirty books for the year and of course I lied, because the next day I started rereading the 2nd sequel to Middle of Somewhere. What choice did I have? I just like Leo and Will! (as in together but also as separate characters) D: This is an interesting one though, because there's so much character work going on. Leo is thinking and reflecting and learning about all these things like physics and yoga to the point he's able to apply something he learned there to something else in his life. Good boy. Also he has an actual group of friends to balance out his obsession with Will.
The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels (India Holton): Well. I read this because of a recommendation. It was interesting and entertaining. For a while. I like how it just rolls with the absurd ideas and behaviours. But it also uses a lot of words and at some point I was like "There's still 150 pages left?!" I was getting very impatient. The romance didn't help. For the first 6 chapters I was so confused. There's a bunch of badass ladies around, why would she fall for a man? And then I remembered, that this isn't a queer book at all. uAu" Wasted opportunity. And I hated the smut scene! Why was it even necessary?! Changing the perspective three times? Ugh. So yeah, entertaining for a while, but ultimately not my cup of tea.
I’ll be home for Christmas (Mason Deaver): A bonus story to I Wish You all the Best, hardly qualifies as a real book. But. I bought this in summer after finishing the main story and put it off to read it in-season. And then I almost forgot. uAub It’s cute and short and a nice follow-up.
Mirrored in Evergreen (B. Pigeon): This one was a little odd. In the beginning I was slightly confused to the order of events and wtf is going on but it's a short book so with just a little patience things are set in order. I did like the characters. The way Rowan is so no-nonsense about everything was very unexpected and welcome. Rosemary was also nice. And I definitely liked the overall atmosphere. That sort of despair, melancholy, nostalgia. That's what it felt like for me anyways. I don't think I understood everything. I'm surely still blind to half of the characters’ motives, but overall I did enjoy reading the book. And because of that remaining sense of mystery I can totally see myself rereading it in the not-so-far future.
Howl (Shaun David Hutchinson): Earlier this month I started reading You've Reached Sam because I had a hot melancholic second where I felt like I could use a little bit of pain so we can suffer in sympathy. The next day I was already over it und shelved the book because I didn't want to deal with the suffering. And then I picked Howl for my last book of 2022 and guess what I got! It's SD Hutchinson so it's not as straightforward and also not about the romance so it's easier to read for me, but goddamn the SUFFERING! Why can people be so shitty? Ugh! I do like his stories though and the way he tells them.
And that’s it! Stay tuned for my Best-of that I still have to compose (effort) and TBR (too easy)!

Books of 2022 - November and December
Tumblr media
Oops posted this the wrong way around as my year at a glance. Ahh well! I read more digitally than I did physically due to travelling a lot to and from school, but here's what I read.
November:
First Love by Ivan Turgenev - most first Turgenev, I enjoyed it. It was a bit predictable but I liked the realism and surprising relatability of this one. I'm intrigued to read more by him.
The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman - I was a little bit disappointed by this one, I think the hype around this one set it up for a fall. It's an interesting look into a woman's severe mental illness and the way everyone around her, especially her husband, belittles and exacerbates her condition. I read it as a sincere attempt to help that went wrong due to a lack of knowledge about postnatal depression (and possibly another condition, I'm not going to try diagnosis!), but the early feminist message was a interesting. I just didn't connect with this one as much as others have.
Lord of Emperors by Guy Gavriel Kay - I loved this book! I took it slowly because I was enthralled by the setting and characters, so much so that I didn't want to leave! I can't say too much as it's the second book in a duology but it was fabulous. One of Kay's best works that I've read (I like Tigana a bit more) and it enhanced Sailing to Sarantium which I struggled with a bit last year.
December:
Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare - I was feeling down at the start of December, so I reread one of my favourite Shakespearean comedies. I had a great time and I still say Beatrice and Benedick are Shakespeare's best couple (and Beatrice is my favourite heroine!)
Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott - I had so much fun with this one, and I was pleasantly surprised. I've heard a lot of mixed reviews about Ivanhoe, and I completely understand why, but I personally loved it. I'm a sucker for 19th century medievalism - I like their version of chivalrous knights and merry England, I have an inner romantic deep down. However, I won't say I recommend it for everyone - there's an attempt at sympathetic Jewish characters but it's clumsy and in places as negatively stereotyped as you would expect from the 19th c., and it's very verbose. I loved it but I can see a lot of people struggling with it.
My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell - I still don't know why I read this... I don't want to go into what it's about due to the content being so dark (check trigger warnings!) but I found it only half successful. A lot of my problems came from the language - it's SO American. There is a reason I rarely read American contemporary works - I struggle with immersion but to a linguistic gap, and yes there IS a difference. There's certain phrases that feel wrong to me, references that pull me out of the book, and life experiences I don't share. It makes it difficult for me to relate to the story and that's what happened here. I ended up criticising the writing more than the content. I do think Russell handled the subject matter relatively well, it's one of the more sensitive examinations that I've seen. However, that last chapter was a mistake. Firstly, it wasn't long enough to show Vanessa on the first steps to "recovery", everything happened too fast and it was unbelievable. Secondly, the authorial moralising voice came on too strong. Vanessa stopped being Vanessa, instead she was a mouthpiece for Russell to tell us about the Me Too movement, and I hated it! We're intelligent enough to get the point of the book for ourselves, stop! Otherwise, it was alright. Again, I can't recommend this one and do check trigger warnings if you're interested.
I am still reading The Red and the Black by Stendhal and Rhythm of War by Brandon Sanderson, which is well over an additional 1000 pages between them but neither is finished. Guess they'll be the first books of 2023 then!

December 2022 Wrap-up
Total Books Read: 59
Favorite Book(s): Lady Wallflower; Haikyu!!; Shortcake Cake; Demon Slayer; Blue Flag; Dengeki Daisy; Cells at Work; Star Crossed; Noragami; Anonymous Noise; Kimi Ni Todoke; Cosplay Animal; Can I Kiss You Every Day?
Book That Surprised Me: Lady Wallflower- I put this down so many times ‘cause I thought it was gonna get overly dramatic, but it stayed pretty drama free! Star Crossed- I mean, I already liked Kiss Him, Not Me, but I wasn’t sure if I would like this one or not but it really had me cracking me up.
Book That Didn’t Meet Expectations: Wild Ones still isn’t really pulling me in, but it’s only 10 volumes...so
Thoughts For This Month: I feel like I nose-dived, but I was only a few less than last month...
