The pregnant stingray mystery has been solved
so there was a female stingray in an enclosure with 2 male sharks.
somehow it got pregnant.
did the sharks hybridise or was it a virgin birth?
neither!
stingrays can hold their breath for several minutes.
they can also leap and climb to a small degree.
the stingray escaped its enclosure, entered the male enclosure, had some fun, and then went back home.
You cannot make this up.

do the sharks in your universe go through parthenogenesis? if they do, do they have control over the pregnancy or does it happen at random?
That's a very interesting question! I thought about it and yes, parthenogenesis happens to the sharks in my universe. One of the characters, the zebra shark called Aria, is the fruit of parthenogenesis.
As for the cause, even for our science today, it is still unknown how this works or whether the female shark has control over it in any way. It is not known whether the females trigger the phenomenon or whether it happens spontaneously. I haven't found much information either; it's something very new to us. Recently, a stingray in captivity became pregnant by parthenogenesis, for example. Stingrays belong to the same family as sharks.
As there are few answers at the moment, I decided to take inspiration from a fantasy idea about this. What I'm going to tell you now is a fictional vision of the origin of parthenogenesis:
My shark people theorize that parthenogenesis is a kind of "Shadow of Decline", an ancestral ability inherited by female sharks that withstood mass extinction events in the primordial ages of the planet.
They theorize that there were probably times when the male shark population declined, so the females who were able to adapt to create "backups" of their genes through cloned daughters prevailed, while those who lacked this adaptation became extinct.
In short, they theorize that females, in situations of stress and prolonged absence of male sharks, trigger a clone as a type of genetic reserve. As she gets older, she transfers the responsibility to her cloned daughter, who may have a better chance of finding a partner to pass on her genes and ensure the survival of the species.
In the context of civilization, the conditions for parthenogenesis to take place are still unknown. But my sharks link the phenomenon to a stress response and prolonged life without producing offspring.
Maybe it's not a good comparison, but it would be a kind of menstrual cycle that instead of happening monthly, happens randomly between 10~20 years after sexual maturity. (I used as inspiration a female blacktip reef shark that developed a fetus in her uterus after 10 years of living in an aquarium without the presence of males).
Modern shark society offers full support to females who don't want to go ahead with parthenogenesis and are given full assistance to carry out abortions. But there are also many females who choose to accept the phenomenon, go ahead with the pregnancy and become the mothers of these children, while some females give birth but hand the newborn over to "kindergartens", which act like orphanages/schools/universities that provide full support for the child to grow up and become independent or be adopted.
A reminder that children born from parthenogenesis will always be girls and with identical genes to their mother. Because of this, some females are afraid to go ahead with parthenogenesis, as they fear that their daughters will suffer from the same physical or mental health problems as their mothers.
In the case of zebra shark Aria, her mother has a neurodivergence and she feared that her daughter would suffer as much as she did, but she decided to go ahead with her daughter's parthenogenesis. Despite having the same neurodivergence, she views it with a completely different approach to her mother, which gives her hope and support.
That's it! I'm sorry if I've written too much or if my English is strange, I got carried away, maybe I'm missing more details, but that's what I've thought so far. Any other ideas to enrich this would be welcome!
It's a very interesting creative exercise to imagine how parthenogenesis would be viewed in a civilized society like ours.

Willow: ... Care to explain how this Happened?
Stingray!faunus Weiss: *Is Pregnant*
Shark!faunus Jaune: W-Well, when two people love each other very much and they're compatible ...
A sting ray in a North Carolina Aquarium has become pregnant despite there being no male Rays in the tank. It is believed this occurred either through Parthenogenesis (Production of viable eggs without a mate) or due to a small species of shark that was moved into the same tank.

TIL you guys also like fish!!!! please let me introduce you to the rest of my fishy community!
first of all, these are my fish tanks:
Tumblr media
this is a 20 gallon tall tank that I will be upgrading to a 37 long next year when I find out where I’m going for residency. the 5lb pressurized cannister is a CO2 tank that I use to inject carbon dioxide into the water (on a timer)! CO2 is the limiting “nutrient” for plant growth underwater in a tank like mine (with bright light and fertilizers added), so it helps encourage plant growth and more vibrant colors in plants with red and orange tones, as well as carpeting plants.
Tumblr media
this is a 6.4 gallon tank that also has CO2 injection, and currently no fish because it is cycling (and will be for about 4 weeks). it will be her highness the betta fish’s new home once it is cycled, because she keeps murdering my shrimp in the community tank. once she is moved, I will probably get a pair of honey gouramis for the community tank.
Tumblr media
this is one of the shrimp in question! she is pregnant. (eggnant, you might say.) I love her.
Tumblr media
these are my kuhli loaches! I have 6 black and 6 banded. they are technically different species and the banded ones are much more shy. they spend a lot of time swimming circles along the glass and draping themselves over plants upside-down to make me think they are dead. they get very offended when you poke them to make sure they’re not dead.
Tumblr media
I have 8 neon tetras. they’re all fat and extremely hard to take non-blurry photos of.
Tumblr media
I also have 3 hillstream loaches, which are one of my favorite fish of all time. they’re juveniles that bred from a friend’s tank, and they look like tiny little stingrays that are frequently stuck to the side of the glass. they are aufwuchs-eaters which means they scrape algae and biofilm off the surfaces of things, but they also like sifting through sand and need sufficient protein (aka. not pure algae eaters).
here’s what they look like from the bottom:
Tumblr media
I also have snails:
Tumblr media
this is the biggest of my three nerite snails! I like nerites because they have bright colors and they don’t reproduce in fresh water. however, if you get a female (like this one), they WILL lay tiny white little sesame seed eggs everywhere, even though they can’t hatch. I used to have “pest” snails in the form of bladder snails and freshwater limpets but, uh, I have a total of 15 loaches in the tank, so. I no longer have pest snails and my loaches are all well-fed. :”)
thank u for coming to my ted talk. I love fish. I love my fish. please come talk to me about fish. I leave u with one last photo of her highness in all her glory:

Meg, you like sharks right?
Did you hear about the sting ray in SC who might have gotten pregnant by a male shark in her enclosure? wild stuff
I do like sharks!
however, that is impossible. Sharks and stingrays can't and don't breed together. Their DNAs are too different.
After looking it up, this article gives some insight that's really interesting

I feel like I have been requesting a lot, but can I hear any Maine/Mass sibling headcanons you may have? Or anything relating to them
Anything for you Mud!! I love getting requests. Sometimes I let them pile up but I love to answer stuff
As for Mass and Maine absolutely!!
I think maine tends to get embarrassed by Mass a lot. Mass can be rather brutish and impulsive and Maine just hides behind his hand and groans because “oh my god you’re wicked embarrassing”
They definitely are the whole “older but short + younger but taller” sibling dynamic
I’m addition to that, I think it’s funny if the beef about their height difference is almost completely one-sided. Maine forgets he’s tall and Mass is seething because how dare his baby brother surpass him. The betrayal.
Of the two, Mass is usually the one to want to spend time with the other. Maine doesn’t ever say no, but Mass is almost always the one to invite Maine out
On the other hand, Maine goes to Mass for advice the most. He refuses to admit it but he relies on Mass whenever he’s struggling with a dilemma
They have a lot of differences in interests but they bond over a mutual fascination with marine life. They heard about North Carolinas pregnant stingray and immediately rushed over to go see it together
Maine has dysphasia which had a huge impact on his ability to understand others and caused a gap in his education and social skills. Massachusetts made an effort to work with him every day on his disability, which neither of them knew was an actual disorder until much much later
Mass is a huge nerd. He loves learning and placed an importance on education while Maine absolutely hated it. But Mass was essentially his guardian in his early years so Mass made sure Maine at least got an education
Maine will call Mass “Ma” to annoy him
Maine actually likes Dunkin. Massachusetts has his order memorized
I believe that’s all I got for now!! Hope it suffices!

tw pregnancy
At this point (37 weeks pregnant), my wife and I are as prepared as well as we can be both emotionally and material wise. Also, the baby shower went amazing, so we're literally just waiting until she decides to make her debut.
I know once the baby is born, I'll miss having her so close to me. I'm so very grateful to have been able to go through this experience with my wife and I'm so so incredibly thankful that I had the opportunity to grow an entire fucking little person- but, I want the physical toll on my body to be over. I want the delivery to be over with so my wife and I can hold our daughter in our arms. Like I don't want to rush her, she can come when she wants to,,, but please I am so so fucking tired of wincing every time I need to turn over and I want these contractions to 🛑stop🛑
Anyway, basically, I just wanted to share a few pictures from the shower
