#Percy vs Octavian

Octavian diplomatically, before going into senate: Look, I know we have this unspoken rivalry thing -
Percy: It’s not a rivalry. You’re just mean to me. And it’s not unspoken. You literally talk about it all the time.
Octavian: Irrelevant. We have to work together so let’s be civil for the time being.

Yeah I was having too much free time and the realization has descended upon me about how much unbelievable sense it makes if Luke were to replace Nico in HOO.
Knowing about Camp Jupiter? - Yeah Idk ab you but like. Alabaster Torrington, former Lieutenant of the Titan Army, is literally out there wielding an Imperial Gold sword. Also Saturn's throne was attacked by the legionnaire. Surely there are many pieces missing but I mean the picture is there.
But how come Luke can become the Ambassador like Nico did? - You guys call Luke a manipulator all the time. He has the tongue he has the skills he has the charm. He'd be fineeeee
Also I reckon Luke vs Octavian might bring a fun dynamic to the stage idk. Former villain vs New Villain. Both with a diplomatic tongue and blonde hair and blue eyes--- Percy's gonna have an aneurysm.
Treading the Tartarus looking for the Doors of Death? - Luke's basically a (godly) federal criminal. He could have been banished to Tartarus. And who knows maybe he could have found his old shoes floating across the hell site that somehow helped him survive for all that time---
Nemesis helped Nico? Well, Nemesis is Ethan's mother and Ethan once sided with Luke back in the day, I wonder how she'd have reacted----
"The Twins wouldn't want Luke" - Well well welll. What if they did intend to take Nico but Luke somehow switched their places/ replaced him bc he refused to let the kid be a prisoner? What then?
Percy making Nico promise to lead them to the House of Hades? - Double angst bc now it's Luke - who led many demigods astray once. Would Percy have the heart to trust him? Would a promise be enough against all those times they had stood on two sides of the war?
Leading the way to the House of Hades? - Think about it. Luke's basically dead. He's a ghost. His father is also the god of traveling. Surely he can have some kind of instincts that guide him through the halls of the dead.
Transporting the Athena Parthenos? - Again. Son of Hermes, god of travel. Look me in the eye and tell me there's no plausible way Luke Castellan could have some sort of teleportation spell that magically blips them a thousand miles away.
And the best thing in all of this, is that Luke actually has the personal motive to fight Gaea.
For Nico, it's more like kindness, the "If I don't do this, those I love will die" - which is sweet, alright, but also quite universal. Luke has more than that. Luke has actually a personal reason which is he has committed the same mistake once. He brought Kronos upon them and only managed to kill him by killing himself. He sacrificed so much for the demigods' sake and now Octavian wants to raise Gaea to doom all of them? He was the one who allied himself with the monsters only to receive the bitter ending, and now Octavian intends to repeat the same mistake?
Try telling me Luke wouldn't want to rip the guy to shreds and blast Geae into pieces. I dare you.
Also obviously the hype of getting a friend-turned-foe turn ally again. How would Percy and Annabeth react? How's Thalia gonna react when Luke comes across the Amazons + Hunters when on his way transporting the Pathernos? Dammit I'd eat that shit up as if I've been starving since the day I was born.

If you could change things in the Riordanverse what would you do differently?
... Do you want a list?
I will attempt to keep this brief, because there's are many things I would change and this isn't even all of it.
Jason gets his memories back. He's more feral either way, and we continue the theme that every Roman demigod is cursed in some way.
Jason's existential crisis isn't Greek vs Roman, it's I was raised to be an ideal that I can't be attained... And I I don't know what to do.
It's I was raised by wolves and than a leigion, I don't even know how to human like others do.
The Seven are actually a family and don't disband when everything is over. No love triangle between Hazel, Frank and Leo. Piper and Jason never end up together. Get rid of the Percy Jason rivalry.
Percy never becomes Praetor and Camp Jupiter look for Jason. And celebrate when he's returned to them, so much so they're willing to hear the Greeks out.
Jason makes friends with Grover, Clarisse and Will while at Camp Half Blood.
We get the scene of Jason decending onto the battlefield in the Titan war and defeating Krios. He's not all powerful but Jason's strong and he fights like a one man army.
Percy almost loses it when he finds out Jason fought Krios "When I catch you Zeus... I mean Jupiter!" Combo moves between demigods, the seven using their skills together.
Camp Jupiter is nowhere near ad loyal to the gods because they pretty much abandoned them.
Octavian, Reyna and Jason were friends at some point. Gaea takes advantage of Octavians visions and turns him against them.
The Eidilon that strikes Camp Jupiter was possessing Jason.
Camp Jupiter is split up between those following Octavian and those following Reyna and Jason. To the point Jason's old cohort refuse to fight against him.
When Percy and Annabeth fall into Tartarus, Jason dives after them and tries to catch them. But while Tartarus pushes them in, it repels him.
They all take losing Percy and Annabeth bad, Jason takes it the worse and feels he needs to be the old Jason. And realises no he doesn't, because everyone else is there with them and he's not alone.
Group hug after Jason meets his dead mother. When Jason looks at Cupid he sees his father.
Jason meets Jupiter who tells him he does care, that's why he kept his distance. And tells Jason he couldn't be more proud of him.
The Roman and Greek demigods didn't fight in the civil war. The Romans weren't pro slavery, none of that. They were close for years but Gaea turned them against each other.
Having the Greeks think the Romans stole the Athens Parthenos and that the Greeks stole the Leigions eagel. The gods decided to fix their fighting by having them forget each other.
This is solved when Percy, Frank and Hazel return the Eagle and Reyna, Nico and Hedge return the Parthenos.

PJO Heroes DemiGods Vs Villains Demigods AU but different-
Percy and Annabeth are a ‘famous’ duo, but they are still focusing on trying to find their niche and balance. Percy never wanted to be a hero so he is struggling to adapt to his position. While Annabeth only wants to make her mother proud of her, but she is still struggling.
Luke is still a Villain, but instead it more like he is working in a Villian company type thing. Like: Kronos is the CEO while Luke is under him but trying to rise to overthrow him.
Jason is a hero ‘that gone bad’. Octavian managed to find out that Thaila is related to Jason and saw her talking to Luke, which was actually her trying to either bring him back to her side or refusing to work with Luke, and ran with the story. So Jason kind of joins Luke’s side because he thinks his sister is there and Luke doesn’t say otherwise.
Leo is a Villain- BECAUSE!! Gaia doesn’t give him a choice and forces him to be her project/minion, he doesn’t want to be and is always trying to get out of doing jobs for her. But he gets into some shady places with gangs and in a lot of trouble and has to work under Luke as Kronos got him out of this ‘trouble’.
Piper is a Villain, mainly because of her father. She wanted his attention, as well as promised safety, so she works under Kronos/Gaia.
Nico and Hazel are Heroes, although Nico is still really angry because of his sister dying from being a Hero before him.
Will is a Villain! HEAR ME OUT- It was a bad decision, but in a moment of weakness and promised safety for his family and lover, he joined Luke and Kronos. He refuses to do any jobs other then healing the innocent that were injured or being the ‘Villain’ DayBringer around his friends and family to keep them safe from actual harm.
Frank is a Hero, I honestly don’t believe he could ever bring himself to harm anyone unless they hurt Hazel or threaten his family and friends.
Reyna is a Hero, who was destroyed when Jason turned ‘evil’.
The lost hero follows Jason, Leo and Piper trying to remember their past and correct their mistakes.
The son of Neptune follows Percy, Hazel and Frank trying to find the missing ‘Villains’ before they cause havoc while Percy tries to get his memories back.
Mark of Athen is Annabeth trying to prove herself as a hero and fighting personally against Luke to defeat him and turn him into a hero.
House of Hades is Annbeth and Percy in Tartarus while Leo, Jason and Piper are left trying to help them out and prove they have changed into Heroes.
Idk what I’m writing tbh- But yeah-

this percy and piper situationship is so funny lol. i feel like percy is willfully ignorant about a lot of things so when piper begins getting territorial she may be like huh wonder she's in a mood and go back to dueling with jason. piper would def call her like a whore or something but like no one in camp would agree with her. piper and octavian are shittalkers fr.
like i don't think it would register to percy that this random piper girl is into a boy she just met or that there is a problem with percy and jason's friendship.
also like i lowkey do want to see percy and jason butt heads more. just like with earlier scenes with thalia, jason is also the one of the very few demigods that are able to even compete with percy. like we obvi knows who wins, but their almost-battles have sm tension!!
i also think piper would have a insecurity complex against percy bc she beats the whole pretty feminine girly that's evil and weak trope. like piper's quirky haircut and natural beauty can't compare to percy's effortless bombshell looks (like come on, girl's a victoria secret angel). percy's waters trumps charmspeak anyday and even her mom likes percy waaay more. also, like piper is not very nice and rude a lot of the time but percy is kind, sarcastic, and adorable. percy's also the pretty but doesn't know/acknowledge it which i'm sure infuriates piper bc it's her thing. percy's more well-loved, experienced, and like the greatest swordsmen of her time so piper can't just fight for victory or intimidate her either.
in all, piper can't compete. she also can't do much to percy either except being a bitch. (i also loved ur characterization of drew in the essie book and i'm looking forward to meeting her in act 4).
percy would totally be like "omg what's her damage" every time piper acts cuckoo, but eventually she'd start to see the red flags due to her experience with.... you know.... her yanderes.
THANKFULLY, piper's not god-level crazy like her yanderes, but percy would genuinely start to worry about jason because of her own experience which is why i don't think i can go with the percy vs jason butting heads route 😔
but yes ur definitely right about insecurity piper will feel. if percy was a dude, piper wouldn't care much about him at all because jason's cooler to her, but piper's internalized misogyny is gonna get triggered so bad since percy's a girl in my fic 😭😭😭
"even her mom likes percy waaay more" LMAO THIS KILLED ME 💀 (but ur right tho 🤭)
(also, just to add a little correction, percy DEFINITELY knows she's hot lmao 😭😭 she's grateful for the massive glow-up 🙏 it almost makes up for the constant trauma she's forced to go through)

In honor of Percy Jackson's birthday I'm going to share my controversial PJO opinions
I don't like Will Solace
Rick Riordan didn't do as much damage to modern interpretation of Greek mythology as, say, Lore Olympus, but he still did damage, and as the age group that read it is growing up and becoming adults who write academic papers and shit, it's going to insanely influence Classical Studies (I could write a whole essay on this but won't)
See: Hunters of Artemis (I will argue to my deathbed the hunters could have relationships with women and that it's supported in myth)
I think Reyna and Nico's arcs should have been switched (Reyna gets girlfriend, Nico learns the power of friendship before romance, both are gay)
If Octavian were described as hot people would LOVE him. Like, Draco Malfoy level fangirl
Also, if Octavian were hot, he would have gotten a redemption death like Luke
Someone important should have died in HoO. It's out of place in-between PJO and ToA, where in PJO there are meaningful and heartbreaking deaths (like, every book) vs the big one in ToA rerouting Apollo's life. HoO had this whole big prophecy and... no one actually died
I don't like Calypso
PJO is well researched and thought out. HoO and ToA have the most basic wikipedia search level of research tbh

Do you think it's fair to say that Heroes of Olympus suffered from character bloat? They're trying to introduce us to these new guys while the main cast from the previous books are still fresh in our minds even if all of them sans Percy and Annabeth are pretty much wallpaper. And then they introduce this whole other camp full of people we've never met and don't care about (Seriously, the CJ campers are pretty interchangeable sans the 7 + Reyna) and expect us to feel the same amount of concern.
Like you said, anon, it’s impossible for us readers to care the same for the Greeks after six books than for the Romans after only one (where one of the PoVs was Percy’s)
Ideally, Rick should’ve written a spin-off or short story before TLH, perhaps featuring Jason and Reyna, giving us a glimpse of the new people
Then, I think SoN should come before TLH to allow us at least a little more time to get acquainted with and speculate about the Romans and their ways
Despite what 12 y/o me thought back in 2011, I’m not a fan of Annabeth and Percy being part of the 7, especially if the rest of them were going to be completely new characters
Personally, though, I think the biggest flaw in HoO was that Rick obviously preferred the Greeks and didn’t even try to explain the Roman side he introduced:
Only vague descriptions of CJ and almost none of their traditions
What was shown was there to antagonise the Romans, to compare their “brutal ways” to the “civilised Greeks”
New side characters were plain, boring caricatures: Dakota, Don the faun, hell, even Octavian. What’s Gwen there for? Literally just to die
New main characters are there to be compared with the old ones (in a very unflattering way, think Jason vs Percy)
Compare SoN to TLT. In TLT we learn a lot more about CHB than we do about Camp Jupiter in SoN (and SoN is longer!)
I love HoO, but the more I think about it, the more I realise I like it for what it could have been rather than for what it was

the anon from the mars-vs-percy fight and your reply made me think how many opportunities rr wasted lol. You should call disney and pitch this idea, it would be IconIC. Everything would've come full circle if they'd fought, and it would have been hilarious to see the romans kill percy for killing mars, and then percy fucking walking out of the doors of death like nothing. He could have been the living "surprise bitch, you thought youd seen the last of me" meme
there were so many good opportunities for rick to make the story come full circle, that could’ve had SO MUCH POTENTIAL. that made sense story-wise to connect pjo with hoo, but NO. and ur right; the romans not managing to kill percy would've been hilarious. imagine octavian's incessant eye twitching after that little shit woke up with a sword in his gut and was like "whaaaaaat." he takes the sword out. "weird. well. hi guys im back did u miss me." also ur right disney should hire me so im less poor.

Octavian, narrowing his eyes: What, you think just because you’re bootlicious you can do whatever you want?
Percy, in neon shutter shades, slurping through his straw: Yeah, pretty much.

The whole Percy VS Jason thing is just the most blatant way they showed us that they wanted Jason to be a lesser version of Percy.
This doesn't happen with any other character in this series.
Jason is made to be the Luigi to Percy's Mario, that it doesn't matter what he does, who he fights or his skills because he was made to be number 2.
Add that on to Jason being very much underutilised given how relevant he is to the plot, his status and role and is always getting knocked out and humiliated.
He's never allowed to show his full potential and any fears he accomplishes are nothing when compared to Percy.
But there rivalry doesn't work because Percy and him hit it off instantly, they were both roasting Octavian and fist bumping but nope they clearly hate each other and Percy thinks of Jason of lesser....
When in reality Percy is probably Jason's biggest hype guy.
When they meet Percy has literally replaced Jason in his own home, if that happened in CHB people would fucking riot.
It's more about Percy going to the Wolf House than Jason being raised there, he can't even have his own origin, Percy knows more about him than Jason knows himself or his past.
Jason as a character from both the meta and in universe is to never be good enough
And I love Percy but man Jason Grace deserves better, he deserves to be a feral one man army who just wants to be loved and gets the family he always wanted to have.

things i would’ve loved to see in hoo:
- trans dude frank
- more homoerotic interactions between reyna and annabeth (think about it - both children of the war goddesses of their respective pantheons, their wits the sharpest of their camps; then cj is attacked by possesed leo and reyna thinks annabeth, whom she trusted and came to care for in those few moments they shared, betrayed her)
- jason “raised by wolves” grace - dude straight up lived with lupa’s pack for YEARS and got raised by them during his formative years (when going on how normal human memories, he wouldn’t have even remembered his mother - his earliest memories would have been of lupa), and yet we never see him tearing at a steak with his face? he’s never tapping his foot, wanting to scratch an itch with it? this would’ve been perfectly in line with riordan’s humor, he missed an opportunity
- rachel elizabeth dare and grover playing an actual role in the plot, not just being seen in that one scene in hoh. the different povs in chapers should’ve been played around with more - give us a pov of someone from the camps, or rachel/grover - the seven were only one part of the many moving elements in the plot and the dream sequences hardly made up for it
- romance being either tied directly into the plot like in pjo or eliminated completely; not seen as a plot device (eg. reyna considering getting involved with octavian when confronted with the possibility of him becoming praetor)
- a villain who’s more than literally just “ehehe i am earth. am bad. want to kill you. no i don’t have a particular reason”. pjo had luke which was so good because he spent the first book establishing how nice he is, how he’s an older brother to everyone at camp, how eager he’s to show you the ropes and young me knew he was going to turn but i had such a hard time believing it. the rest of the books don’t make things any easier because luke is plotting this horrible thing, but is it really horrible? until today people are fighting about whether he was right or not. and they have to stop him but he used to be their friend. they used to care about each other so much and that care doesn’t just go away when he betrays them. so they’re faced with one impossible choice and they know what they have to do but can they? anyways hoo wishes it was half as complex as pjo
- the leo/sammy doppleganger situation should have been expanded upon more beyond the exuse for the leo/hazel/frank love triangle. no i don’t know how. but it just makes it look like rick put it in there for funsies and never did anything with it. my mind keeps going back to a time travel plot but i know this is the riordanverse and We Don’t Do That Here
- octavian being more than “i created this character so fans could have someone to hate”
- the author not feeling so needed to write a blockbuster epic story like the avengers or whatever was in cinemas at that time. it was supposed to be a continuation of pjo, but instead of expanding upon the characters we had met in it, we barely saw any of them, they were forgotten, only the few main were placed in the spotlight, along with a bunch of new characters we’d never seen before. the focus was on the seven and a few other characters
- “the gods decided to not interact with mortals” was a stupid decision, especially considering the ending of tlo. percy asked the gods to be more present in their children’s lives, they, albeit reluctantly, accepted. and the next time we see them they remove themselves from their lives. the central conflict of the previous series had arised because nobody knew of the gods, what they were up to. there was no lexicon of rules, they just had to wait; and they grew tired of it. the gods should have been visiting them, awkwardly integrating themselves in their lives, not the exact opposite. not setting up for another demigod uprising
- i know this is just wishful thinking but. there should’ve been more of the riordanverse. yes i know there were already a bajilion other plot lines and we had the romans introduced but. i would’ve been fine with even just a little nod. or a character from a different pantheon appearing. this is all in the same universe as the huge chaos snake and the other, world snake and i just think it should’ve been expanded upon more
- frank’s firewood should have had. a role. you set up your character to be “the most powerful” of the seven, all extremely powerful protagonists, and then decide to ignore him for the last book and a half?
- by far one of the things that irritated me the most was how everyone survived. this was supposed to be a sequel series to a children’s series that had one of the main characters stab himself after realizing that this was the right thing to do. a daughter of the goddess of beauty got acid spit in her face. tlo is my favourite of the pjo books because it’s the climax, and it lays it down as it is - not as some heroic fight scene of good vs. evil, but people, being people. making choices for the ones they love and making mistakes because they don’t know what’s right. in boo, there’s an attempt at this “great last battle”, but if anything, this was undermined by the fact that nobody died. (i did like how leo coming back was framed, even if i’m not a terrible fan of caleo, nico feeling leo’s spirit alive, leo having a “surprise” chapter at the end.. goosebumps man) (though i suppose jason could’ve died right there and there. “to storm or fire” and everything)
- more hazel/nico getting confused by modern technology - i just think it would’ve been funny to see hazel hear about some event that happened between the 30s and present day and be like “you said what-” it’s good humor and also characterbuilding
- however, if we’re so horribly set on having romantic relationships, valdangelo is right there. nico can’t face his queerness. leo understands machines better than people. they both carry an immense sadness within, but it made them totally different people. and the dynamic? everything you could’ve wanted

honestly like going through your asks i agree sm how underwhelming heroes of olympus was. like in the og series there was so much death, betrayal, and character development and in hoo we see percy and annabeth in tartarus (which i felt like their disappearance should have had waayy more of an affect on the rest of crew but without annbeth as their leader and percy as their glue how are they serving) and Nico's forced coming out ceremony (poor boy was tamazatized by cupid and ric didn't even delve into much more after that?).
gaea was so underwhleming and i don't belive at all that she could have been beaten after she was fully formed. like there was no actual counter against a primordial and percy and annabeth only defeated luke bcuz he killed himselves. like i don't think celestial bronze can actually do enough damage to kill a god, yet alone the earth! (divine weapons be looking a little enticing here) and at least with kronos their was a personal connection. like i get that she tried to kill the people in the prophecy like with leo but i felt like it was so long ago leo had already comes terms with his mom's death. there was no emotional charge that should have been there and the romans vs greeks was so disappointing. i didn;t like at all that the greeks were good and the romans were evil and i felt like jason was to easily accepting within greek ranks. like yeah i get it, greep camp is more chill but their was no promised internal hostility and it just felt like their big battle wasn;t that big of a mutal battle, just greeks tryan stop another invasion. and don;t get me started on the athena statue. that was written SO weird and it definitely should have been established way earlier in the series. and poor nico and reyna tryna haul it across the world when they could have contributed much more. their perspectives was such a snooze-fest and i was just like what the hell is this side-quest?
like the second series was more mature and professional writing wise so i expected much more blood and gore. every demigod was a tragedy is the og series so it was so weird to see everyone live happily ever after after. and like i felt like he forgot how to create chemistry after percbeth. like japer??? was lacking like any flavor and hazel and leo had more chemistry than frank. like frank and hazel could have been such a good sable couple if they were written better. and the foced interactions with the mini-quests in the books were so awkward. rick should have created so much more interactions with each other or killed them off if he couldn't manage that many characters.
YES 👏 YOU 👏 GET 👏 IT
heroes of olympus honestly seemed so... poorly planned to me? like with pjo, a lot of plot points connected so well together whereas hoo was a mess and i genuinely think the amount of main characters was what rick had a lot of trouble with.
the first two books, the lost hero and the son of neptune were actually pretty good and that's because both books strictly focused on just three characters and three povs each. but then when the seven finally joined, things went downhill 😭
the last book was super disappointing. the seven + gods vs the gigantes went by really quickly and most of the "fighting" was just a paragraph or two of each battle. as for the gaea battle.... yeah 💀 i think it would've been cooler if the demigods (roman and greek) worked alongside the gods to take gaea down since, like it was mentioned many times before, that gaea would've been hard af to beat once she formed 💀
A DETAILED TEAM UP OF THE DEMIGODS FIGHTING ALONGSIDE THEIR GODLY PARENT??? POSEIDON AND PERCY SQUARING UP??? ZEUS AND JASON????? ANNABETH AND ATHENA???? I WOULD'VE LOVED THAT!!! 😩 (i definitely believe athena would be nagging her daughter throughout the whole fight about how she still doesn't approve of her boyfriend and annabeth is just "omg moooom 🙄 focus on the battle!!!)
octavian could've been better written too! it was clear that he was supposed to be the "luke" of the second series with gaea as "kronos", but his death was meh to me unlike with luke who i genuinely felt bad for especially since his reasons made sense. octavian... i didn't feel any sympathy for.
rick's favoritism for piper was also an issue for me too, especially as i grew older and out of my 'not like other girls' phase 😭
pls im just hoping that if hoo gets made into a tv show too, that there's MAJOR changes to it 🙏

vs.
Percy could see Octavian's mind working, calculating whether or not Percy would be useful.
