Would you say Biden has been a better president (so far) than Obama?
That's an interesting question. Obama had a really tough first three years. He inherited two raging wars that were not going well at all and an even worse economic crisis than the pandemic's aftermath. Sometimes, I think people forgot how scary the Great Recession got between 2008 and 2010. All Presidents are forced to hit the ground running on Inauguration Day, but the Obama Administration had a five-alarm economic fire to put out from the moment he took the oath. It required expending a ton of political capital just to get things steady and heading in the right direction. And then the Democrats got slaughtered in the 2010 midterm elections.
So almost all of Obama's first term was spent climbing out of a deep hole and despite the fact that he had some major legislative accomplishments from pretty early on in his Presidency, he really didn't start finding his footing until 2011. I was highly critical of the Obama Administration's communications strategy during his first term because he had some massive legislative victories (the Recovery Act, repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell, the 2010 tax reform bill, Dodd-Frank, S-CHIP, and, obviously, the Affordable Care Act), but they fumbled some of the rollouts and did a lousy job promoting the impact of those accomplishments and their successes in implementing TARP. That started to improve after the 2010 midterms and as Obama became more comfortable in the White House. Remember, when he was elected President in 2008, he had only had three years of experience in Washington as a junior Senator -- and, quite frankly, he spent a lot of that time building a Presidential campaign and running for the Presidency. No one is ever completely ready to be President on day one, but Obama needed a lot more on-the-job training about Washington politics than, say, George H.W. Bush or Biden. After President Obama ordered the raid that killed Osama bin Laden and started diving into the 2012 reelection campaign cycle, he was on a roll. He also seemed to do a better job arguing his points when he had the foil of an opposing party in control of a Congressional chamber after the 2010 midterms. But it was rough for most of that first term, even though it seems like he was chalking up legislative victories at first glance.
Biden had the advantage of eight years as an influential Vice President and nearly 40 years as a powerful U.S. Senator. There are few Presidents in all of American history who had more Washington experience than Joe Biden did on Inauguration Day. He also was succeeding the worst President in history; someone who had bungled the biggest health crisis in modern memory, been impeached twice and had just incited an insurrection that attacked the U.S. Capitol and tried to overturn an election. It's not that he had an easier task -- not by any means -- but Biden would have really needed to fuck up right out of the gate in order to have done worse than his predecessor.
The Biden Administration has clearly had its struggles, as well, but I think his team was far better prepared to tackle those problems than Obama's was during Obama's first term. Of course, most of the Biden Administration had worked in Obama's Administration, so they knew what they were doing by that point, and they communicated far more effectively. I think the biggest individual legislative victories and policy accomplishments of Obama's first term were probably bigger than any of Biden's individual achievements, but Biden's may have been more immediately impactful to more people, if that makes any sense. I also think that the fact that President Biden’s party performed so well in his first midterm election will also be remembered as a big victory because that just doesn't usually happen historically, and future historians will see it as even more impressive in contrast with the political climate in which it occurred.
After all of that, I recognize that I still didn't really answer your question! I honestly don't know. It always requires time to be able to properly judge Presidencies, especially when comparing them to others, so it's just too difficult for me to give a clear answer while we're still in the middle of Biden's first term. And I believe a President's job performance has to be rated on more than just legislative achievements, so other aspects of the job should be factored in. Did they inspire change? Did they provide moral leadership? How did they respond to the crises unique to their specific times? Did they have a certain vision or an agenda and how much of that mission did they accomplish? How did they meet international challenges and did they provide the global leadership that the rest of the world has sought from American Presidents since World War II? Did they fulfill their oath to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution? Was the country in a better place on the day their term ended than the day they were sworn in? It requires much deeper thought and a closer examination of how the Presidents led the country within the context of the times they presided over. I understand that I ended up asking more questions than answering, but it's just never quite as simple as looking at a scoreboard of legislative victories and policy failures.

[Transcript of a conversation on Bluesky]
K.B. Spangler @kbspangler.com
One holdover that's stuck with me from Trump's term in office is how few people actually call in. My congressman's office said they were BOGGLED at how many calls they had gotten on a particular issue, so I asked how many...
They replied, "Seventeen."
jamie quinn 🏳️‍⚧️ @threnody.bsky.social KOSA is moving through the senate right now, where it has significant support. but nothing's final until it's final. if your senator's a democrat, call & email. use this script. it's timed to 1:00 and it won't take long. even with enforcement moved to the FTC, this bill is too easily weaponized.
[Embedded Text Image Transcript]
My name is _ and I'm one of your constituents. I'm calling to urge you to vote NO on KOSA - the Kids Online Safety Act. The bill's sponsors claim it will protect kids by placing a duty of care on online platforms to prevent anything that could be harmful.
The power to decide what's harmful has been ceded to the FTC. FTC leadership is made by presidential appointment. Current president Lina Khan may proceed fairly, but what happens when the next Donald Trump is in the Oval Office? What if it's Trum himself? Do you trust a Trump appointee not to abuse this enforcement power?
KOSA claims to protect kids, but it's poorly designed and, given time, it will absolutely and without question, harm LGBTQ children, adults, and anyone who needs information on reproductive health or abortion.
KOSA author, Senator Marsha Blackburn, said she introduced KOSA in part - and I quote - "to protect minor children from the transgender in our society." The Heritage Foundation proudly said they'll apply pressure through KOSA to block information about abortion, reproductive health, & LGBTQ issues.
Vote NO on KOSA.

K.B. Spangler @kbspangler.com
So, yes, your voice does make a difference because if everyone else is thinking "Well, my voice doesn't matter so why bother" then you and sixteen of your online buddies can go ahead and straight-up boggle a congressman.

Why not consider having mandatory psychological assessments, for our presidents and other leaders?
Tumblr media
I decided to look up what criteria are typically considered when nominating individuals for such an important role in our society as well as the processes we use to make decisions. So how exactly do we assess a candidate? This question dawned on me later after years of feeling let down by my choices despite my initial optimism. In every election I found myself repeating the errors time and time again.
It’s become apparent to me that I simply lack all the information to make an informed decision. Realistically how could I? Solely based on a string of responses, appearances or televised debates? There have been instances in my life where close friends or family members have surprised me with their reactions and behaviours. So then how can I accurately judge someone I have no connection with?
It’s evident that each of us has our limitations when it comes to assessing individuals – influenced by our beliefs, values and more. We are all unique with varying perspectives, judgments and scales of values. The same holds true for candidates.
In conclusion, what defines a leader. And how can we discern this prior, to casting our vote?
To begin with, there is not only one set of criteria for evaluating the performance of a president. Various theories exist on this subject and as always compiling a 10 list can yield varied results. Fundamentally, each individual is unique from the outset. It’s impractical to expect one leader to cater to every preference equally. Leaders cannot meet all our desires. But can a leader exhibit both efficiency and ethical conduct across all domains? Certainly possible. Then, who determines the core values that should be prioritized?
Here’s what some opinions say – as different perspectives offer viewpoints. Some argue that it’s essential to consider the beliefs, attitudes and actions that differentiate leaders from others; while others posit that it’s not merely personal traits or characteristics that hold significance but rather the transformative vision that others can get behind.
Certain individuals advocate for adopting a lens when evaluating a leader’s character and virtues like compassion, modesty, honesty, self-restraint, fairness, responsibility, bravery, transcendence, determination and cooperation. These leaders tend to be most impactful when they embody a shared set of principles which facilitate discussions, among others on how to implement them. Some individuals lean towards beliefs centred on following rules and societal norms like avoiding conflicts of interest, obeying laws and providing benefits – these factors influence how politicians’ behaviour is ethically evaluated.
Even if there were a list of 10 accepted values it wouldn’t completely address the issue. Why? Because people tend to show bias towards those they consider part of their group and are more swayed by those they feel a connection with. Humans strongly favour those they see as “one of us”.
Consequently, individuals often overlook these 10 values when assessing someone in (or aspiring to) a leadership position. Subconsciously, we tend to assess leaders based on our ideas of leadership. People typically use criteria to evaluate politicians relying on impressions and the opinions of their social circle. Essentially, we have crafted an idealized image of how leaders should be perceived. Some may seek an authoritarian figure similar, to what they experienced in their family background; however such leaders are often punitive, lacking empathy and inclined towards intimidation. Many people are influenced by what they see in movies and TV shows, where leaders are portrayed as life figures who can save the world. However, this often leads to false expectations and unfair blame placed on leaders when they can’t meet those expectations.
It’s knowledge that no leader is flawless. Politicians can’t please everyone because they represent groups with conflicting interests. Collaboration and compromise are essential for progress.
Imperfection doesn’t equate to incompetence. Soft skills play also could play a role in a politician’s effectiveness more than their beliefs.
Given our lives, it’s challenging to form well-informed opinions about leaders. Wouldn’t it be helpful to have assessments that provide insights without relying on guesswork? I don’t want us to become careless in our judgments relying on evaluations solely. However, it’s crucial to find a way to make important decisions especially when our future is on the line. Tools for assessment, and having an extra layer of security in our choices would be beneficial.
I prefer knowing upfront if someone has Machiavellian or narcissistic traits so I won’t be caught off guard later. It’s important for me to understand who is the person behind the TV screen from the beginning.
When you need to get your driver’s license, you need a psychological test. In recruitment, more and more companies are requesting psychological tests for potential employees based on the principle that having the necessary skills is not enough if you are not compatible with the organizational culture and are not a good team player. If such requirements are desired by companies with just a few employees, why shouldn’t they be mandatory for a position that involves leading millions of people?
I will leave at the end a very interesting article that I found and which, I believe, is just as relevant today:
“American presidents are not required to pass mental health exams or psychological and psychiatric evaluations before taking office in the United States. But some psychologists and members of Congress have called for such mental health exams for candidates following the 2016 election of Republican Donald Trump. Even members of Trump’s own administration expressed concern about his “erratic behavior” in office. The president described himself as a “very stable genius.””. Your letters: Presidential leadership styles matter
"In my opinion, leaders convey challenges to their teams who they get to know, and then back them up, appraising their efforts and guiding the team when needed." - Peter Truitt of Danbury
Dear editor, When I worked in product development for various companies, marketing departments would periodically give us new assignments: A new product that does this and that better than our competitors. It should not be any larger than X or Y or weigh more than our competitor’s product. It should take less time to assemble than our current product … and so on. The marketing department did not…

I have always been honest with you. I have only tried to encourage others with every word I speak. Some call me a poet, where word is my sword but word is not the weapon of my choice.
My sword is you. My word is but spoken into the dark in hopes it illuminates the path you were chosen to follow. You are the power that can change the world not for us, but for our children and theirs.
Tumblr media
My sword, I ask that you listen. Words are what sharpen your blade, but knowledge is what powers the swing. It is time I share with you what I have seen. It is time you sharpen your blade.
Politics are the power of manipulation. For decades I have seen the powers of each party and watched how they decided to use them. I have seen a party reduce minorities to ash, making them believe they have been wronged and plant a hatred in them. I saw the same party reap the hatred they grew when they announced their presidential candidate, and marketed him as the savior of minorities.
Remember, they made you hate. They made you believe that you were less than you are by controlling your money. They allowed people to treat you poorly for so long because they needed to. They needed you to believe that the color of your skin mattered and made you less of who you are. If you had believed you were just American, you wouldn't of voted the way they wanted you to.
Now, they are not the only ones to blame. I know many of you believe that each party has their own agenda but that is not true. Politics are how each party benefits from the other. It's teamwork. It's how they stay in power that matters. While one party makes you believe you are lesser, the other makes people believe they are better. If you are too busy fighting each other and believing they will change it, they keep that power.
Think for a moment, my sword. I know that is not your purpose, but it should be your desire. Remember a time before when skin color wasn't a political topic? Do you remember growing up and not thinking twice about those around you of a different color? Now remember when that started to change. The political topic of race ignited when a person of color took the throne.
The Democratic Family wanted you to believe they were giving you a savior, a face in the crowd. They treated your cities like garbage so that you could see their king as your future, and suddenly the world was different.
However, the Republican Family didn't speak about that. They knew better than to show you the truth, so they in turn lied to you. They fashioned themselves the True American, intentionally spreading the idea that whites were better by advertising a true America without color.
To them, this was how it needed to be. They knew that the rival family grew hatred in the people of color so they tended the fields of white people. Suddenly, that is all politics became.
They want you to vote. But imagine if you didn't. Imagine if the very thing that gave them power was taken away from them. Imagine withholding your voice and only staring at them as they tried to get you to speak. You stand there, in silence, as they wonder if you are swayed by their words.
They will stumble. They will falter. They will show you their true colors are simply shared. They NEED our votes, but we do not need them.
Democracy is just a temporary Monarchy, and the Senate their court. Our representatives are their spies, letting them know how we would vote if they decided to encourage certain things. Do not vote for their spies.
Do not vote. Let it die. Tear down what they have built and when it is reduced to rubble we shall build the country in its true image.
Do not vote. Do not speak. Let them stumble through the awkward silence.
I ask for those who wish for real change to stay silent. Gather at their rallies, no matter the party. Gather and never speak. Stand there, do not rejoice. Do not clap, do not smile or frown. Simply be The Silence of 2024. Let this year change who truly is in power.
