Eastern Shooting Star
Primula meadia syn. Dodecatheon meadia
This native perennial has a range that spans throughout the central and eastern United States, where it can be found growing in a variety of habitats with acidic to neutral soils. Its nodding flowers resemble a shooting star and are usually white or lilac in color.
This particular plant was growing in a dolomite glade, but I've also found this species growing in moist, open forests over sandstone before.

Cyclamen seedling
The cyclamens belong to the Primrose Family (Primulaceae), and the come from the Mediterranean basin and eastward to Iran. They grow very happily in a relatively shady part of the Ruth Bancroft Garden, and they have spontaneously re-seeded and spread over the years. Their delightful flowers with up-swept petals are a treat at this time of the year.

#1935 - Anagallis arvensis - Scarlet Pimpernel
Tumblr media
AKA Lysimachia arvensis, red pimpernel, red chickweed, poor man's barometer, poor man's weather-glass, shepherd's weather glass or shepherd's clock.
Some of the common names derive from the fact the flowers only open in sunlight, although you’d think Shepherds etc would notice the way the sun was shining without having to check the plant first. Also despite the name, it frequently comes in bright blue, and sometimes pink.
Native to Europe, Western Asia and North Africa, but now an invasive weed worldwide. This one was photographed in Waipukurau, NZ, by @purrdence, but we get the blue version in our own backyard here in Perth.
Used for a wide variety for medicinal purposes over the years, despite the lack of clinical evidence that it worked for any of them. Certainly, it can vary from ‘mostly harmless’ to ‘deadly poisonous’.
The Scarlet Pimpernel is the alias of Sir Percy Blakeney in the novel of the same name by Baroness Emma Orczy, and the fictional flower Elanor is said to be a little enlarged version of pimpernel, according to one of J. R. R. Tolkien's letters.

It’s #PrimulaClevelandii season. Get out there and search the few remaining Southern California grasslands with their rain-soaked clay-heavy soils and find a few. Chinese alpine plant: Primula pinnatifida (syn. Primula apoclita), pic 1&2. My first impression was it is a Primula deflexa (pic 3&4), then realised it is quite different.

Theophrasta americana has done something!
This was an impulse eBay bid from last summer. I'd never heard of the plant before then, and there's very little information out there about it, especially regarding cultivation. Endemic to Hispaniola, it's a member of Primulaceae. Neither of those things bode well for extreme heat tolerance, and when the plant arrived (with a minor mealybug infestation), it dropped a few leaves and proceeded to go into stasis for the next 11 months. The only display of life was the leaves shriveling a bit when they got too dry. It came indoors for the winter, and this spring, I decided to try a different spot for it. It's finally making new leaves, so hopefully it's happier now.

Primula vulgaris, the common primrose, growing wild in Vlachokerasia, Greece. Learn more about our online courses on herbal medicine & aromatherapy in jointheflow.net Discover my books on bodywork and more: amzn.to/3xhaNey According to EMA, Primula flowers and roots are used against coughs, bronchitis, and catarrhs of the respiratory tract and also to treat nervousness, headache, or rheumatism. In the past, Primula leaves and flowers were also eaten raw or cooked as a source of vitamins and microelements available in late winter. Both flowers and leaves are edible, the flavour ranging between mild lettuce and more bitter salad greens. The leaves can be cooked in soup but preferably with other plants because they are sometimes a little strong. The leaves can also be used for tea, and the young flowers can be made into primrose wine.  Primula vulgaris foliage contains significant amounts of vitamin C. In a study, it was shown that Primula vulgaris extract induces cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in human cervix cancer cells. In appropriate conditions, P. vulgaris can cover the ground in open woods and shaded hedgerows. It is found mainly by streams, under bushes, in orchards and clear, moist deciduous forests. To prevent excessive damage to the species, picking of primroses or the removal of primrose plants from the wild is illegal in many countries, e.g. the UK Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Primula spp is not related to the evening primroses (genus Oenothera).
