Reno hates the fact that in the last twenty four hours he's somehow become the Turk Expert on SOLDIER behaviour. Well, Rude did some of the research too, but still, this is not the way Reno expected to see his career going.

"I think the fundamental problem with the entire SOLDIER corps is that they don't know how to take a fucking break," he decides, rocking his chair back and forth on its back legs while making faces at the ceiling. "I mean, just look at the shitshow that started just because Sephiroth took some time off! They couldn't even let him have that."

Rude hums, shuffling through what looks like all of the camp's paperwork.

Reno continues, crossing his hands behind his neck. "Rhapsodos and Hewley don't leave him alone, everything he does is scrutinised -"

"Mostly by us," Rude comments.

Reno ignores him. "The other Firsts take him out training, because they don't do enough of that in their work hours, clearly, and then Rhapsodos drags him out shopping, and that's just the first day. The second day he goes to train in what was at the time an empty training room not in use, and the moment he does, people call Hojo on his ass," he waves a hand. "The poor schmuck took a break, and all he got was so much stress for it! And that's without even taking into consideration his memory loss!"

Rude hums in agreement and then looks up. "SOLDIERs don't have work hours."

"What?" Reno asks, his momentum halted.

"SOLDIERs aren't paid by the hour - they're paid by the mission. They, technically, pick their own hours. They can and do regularly make thousands of Gil in a matter of hours."

The front legs of Reno's chair bang against the floor, rattling their entire paper hut of a house. "Well, I know that, yes, everyone knows that. It's a big selling point, aside from the whole become a hero by having Mako pumped into your veins thing."

Rude hums in agreement. "With his mission completion rate, Sephiroth regularly makes up to quarter million Gil in a month."

"... By working how many hours, in general, per day?"

"Seventeen - 

"Seventeen?! When does the fucker sleep?!"

Rude shrugs and puts the papers down. "According to his medical file, he generally can do with five hours of sleep while maintaining optimal function."

"And who the fuck determined that - Professor Hojo?" Reno scoffs. "Un-fucking-believable. Also my point is made! SOLDIERs don't know how to take a fucking break."

"Truly a detrimental view on work," Rude agrees.

"It really fucking is! I mean, come on! You take a bunch of jacked up meatheads, give them a system that massively rewards their overwork, you keep them on call all the time, keeping them on edge and hyped up, all the while Hojo looms over them like the fucking boogeyman and can pull them into the labs any time he wants!" Reno scoffs. "Never mind the fact that they're considered, technically, Shinra property, with all the Mako in their veins, so they have fuck all employee's rights."

"Might add to the reason why so few take time off," Rude agrees.

"They do have paid time off, right?" Reno asks. "The program isn't that much of a shit, right?"

"They do, standard rate… which is on average about a fifth of what they'd stand to make working. Or in Sephiroth's case… one-thirtieth."

"Of course it fucking is," Reno scoffs with disgust.

"... And the Science department can still call them in, if they're in Midgar."

"So either work yourself to early death or take a massive hit to the wallet and still Science can just grab your ass if they feel like it! What the fuck," Reno mutters. "Who the fuck designed the SOLDIER program, anyway?"

"According to the paperwork, originally Professor Gast… but its current form is mostly Professor Hojo's handiwork."

"Guess I should've expected that," Reno mutters and rocks back in his chair again, glaring at the ceiling. "The whole fucking system is rigged to blow. Nice fucking experiment you got there, Professor."

And now it's his problem to deal with. Wonderful.

He thinks of the way Angeal said it, time and privacy, like it was a joke, an impossible task. It makes him so fucking mad.

The only fucking reason work as a Turk is worth it sometimes is because it comes with some sweet fucking benefits - including properly paid time off and all the incentive on the fucking planet to use it, too. Because way back when Turks were first put together, then still called the Investigation Sector of the General Affairs Department, someone had the common sense to look at these guys, with abilities and access of fucking spies, and go, "yeah, you know what we don't want to see - what happens when these assholes get burnout." Because that's how you end up with your asshole bosses assassinated in the night.

To this day Turks will fight tooth and nail to keep their off work hours off the fucking clock. Because what happens on the clock is bad enough, and if it doesn't justify being able to fucking punch out at the end of the day, then what's even the fucking point?

Time and privacy aren't impossible to get, for the Turks - those are fucking contractually enforced benefits they're entitled to, and just a few of many! They keep them fucking sane! And woe be the fucking asshole who tries to mess with them. Even Heidegger knows better.

It's so damn wild to realise that just a few floors down there a bunch of bastards who just don't… care? Who are incentivised not to care. Who'd rather work themselves to death rather than risk being seen at loose ends. Guess that's how Shinra keeps the SOLDIERs in check - they're clearly all of them too overworked to even think straight anymore. And those who are not working still might be pulled into the Science Department any time. Shit.

Dragging his hands down his face with a groan, Reno rolls out of his chair. "I hate this fucking assignment already. Did you find anything?"

"There are a few potential sites," Rude agrees and shows him a drawn map of the area. "A charcoal burner's house over here has been abandoned for months, and might be in bad condition. A hunter's lodge over here, it's higher up on the mountains and might be within view of Wutai patrols from Fort Tamblin. And here there's an old farm, partially burned in a bombing two years back, abandoned since."

Reno considers the locations. The hunter's lodge is right out… "We'll start with the charcoal place," he decides. "If that doesn't work out, then the farm."

"Sounds good," Rude agreed. "How will we justify it?"

"Do we justify it? It's Turk business," Reno scoffs, taking out his PHS. "And so, it's no one's business."

Rude thinks about that for a moment and then nods. "I'll requisition supplies."

"You do that," Reno agrees, checks his watch to make sure it's office hours back home and makes a call. It takes no time for the call to connect. "Good morning, boss, how's the weather in Midgar?"

"There was a storm, but it looks like the worst is over now," Tseng answers. "What's the word for Sephiroth?"

Reno flashes back to the moment he heard the arguably strongest man in the world sobbing into his hands about how fucked he is. "Yeah, so, about that. We're making some new arrangements."

Three years ago, I did a AGSZC post about how they love or at least lust and I thought I would bring it back and see what's different.

Genesis

Pansexual as fuck. Likes the wine, not the label. Also more of a casual fucker than anyone else because sex can just be something fun to do and sometimes variety of the spice of life. He is also the spice of life, so it works well.

Love language is touch so he is absolutely the person who does random touches throughout the day, from reaching over to push back hairs to 'accidental' hand brushing, he's like a cat who doesn't want you to know they want your attention while simultaneously pushing you to give them the attention.

I think a lot of people think he's fussy but he's not, he's just big on body reclaimation especially after degradation. Being able to shift his look, to feel a little softer in his own space, it's an important part of why Shinra has never been the be all entity for him. As such, I think he pushes for the same for people he loves as part of that sense of love because he values that independence and self expression. He likes to bring a little chaos and impulse to things so he likes to push and challenge, especially in bed.

Highest sex drive of the lot of them, but is also probably the person most versed in his own body too because he both took the time to figure out what he liked. Also his skills really translate well to sex. He's a mage so he's good with his hands and his dexterity, he's learned to roll his tongue to do more than recite the plays inspired by LOVELESS and he feeds off of reactions then responds in kind.

Possessive as all hell, he likes to see his handiwork in all manner of places. He's a biter, he's a scratcher and he will write on them with anything to hand. There has definitely been some knifeplay with that writing.

While he can seperate sex and love, when the two mix is generally when he's in his element. Whether that's the kind of puppy love he has with Angeal, the demanding ferocity of Sephiroth, the casual enthusiasm of Zack or the intense connection of Cloud, it's a different experience for him and he never treats anyone exactly the same. He would 100% have a good time with Tifa and the sheer power of that woman but if we go JBSWM-verse, baby sister called dibs and being violently possessive of loved ones seems to be a family trait.

Sephiroth

Has a tendency to think practically about sex as a biological thing, right up to the point he can push out of that mindset and then, it's all pure desire and instinct. Everything becomes want and need very quickly once he's made up his mind and then he's just all about completely enveloping the other person into himself. There is a reason he wants everyone to be inside him canonly, okay? It's just some misplaced kink.

Generally a little touch starved when he was younger so he's very touch focused as an adult. Like there is a reason he likes nails down his back or bites or anything that really gets under his skin and takes a while to leave. It's this evidence of something important.

For someone who has largely used his body as a weapon to inflict violence, also really into wringing out the most pleasure that he can. Once someone is below those barriers, I think he has a lot of fun getting genuine responses from people. The kind of things that they may not notice in themselves but he files away as part of something they like. Even with himself, I think he notes things like how he's all about how different things feel.

Absolute bastard too, total tease when he's being controlling and thus when those tables get turned and he chooses to give that up, it's always about getting pushed to his limits. That's why it's always with someone he loves and trusts enough to do that - he may not have a choice in how his body was/is used in some ways but in the ways that matter to him, he is very particular about who he lets near him and how much he'll trust them. I think this is the core of Genesis's desire to get a very vocal response some day, he wants to try and wipe the restraints of this away and get him swallowed up in the moment while being swallowed down.

Way more tentative about being the instigator, but again, I think that's just because he's so much in the spotlight that so little of his life is his that he's obscenely possessive of what he has and the public do not deserve to intrude on it.

Least straight of the bunch. There's only one pussy that ends up in his bed and it's him. (Sephiroth as cat jokes will never get old and I will not apologise for them.)

Angeal

Surprisingly, I think he's the one who has the most sharing when we're doing things on the poly side. I don't think it's so much possessiveness as he has a very traditional idea of what a love story is and can't always seperate himself from the idea that love is about being someone else's everything and that makes it harder with multiple people involved. He might advocate sharing but he's not always a big fan of it, so he does like a lot of one-on-one time to try and sate that feeling.

I also think comparatively, Angeal's the most 'straight' of the bunch. Genesis slipped under the wire because he's 100% demi and that connection means that what parts he had wasn't really a deal breaker and Sephiroth got in under the 'Sephiroth defies categorisation' rule. If you want to extend that to Zack, he comes under Genesis any twenty minutes you let them be bored alone together as another person where it's how he knows him and if you want to add in Cloud, well, he does like the spitfires, doesn't he? I think baby Genesis made an impression.

Care as a love language. Absolutely loves to feel needed, to take care of who he's with even if he can roast them during doing so. It's about giving them food, making them comfortable and pushing out of his comfort zone when he can because he does love them. He likes to make love more than fuck, I'm not even sure he knows how to just fuck. The two things are so linked for him.

Does enjoy the commander role in bed, which is pretty funny when he's with people who outrank or are the same rank as him. I think he enjoys the idea of just getting under their skin enough to let them relax and he can just take care of everything - but not right away, this is someone who screams edger to me both for himself as a sense of denial and for whoever he's with.

Rarely has anal sex. Not because of a lack of enjoyment, it's just that - as I think I wrote somewhere before - it's not just his wallet that's tight. He has trouble relaxing into it and I think it takes a lot longer and they just don't really have the time. He does however have large fingers and knows how to use them. I like to think this came from Genesis being ready to be sexually active before he was so he got a lot of practice in doing other intimate things before he was ready for that.

Zack

Pure energy and enthusiasm, Zack is just someone who's up to try anything and roll with it. I don't think he always likes everything but he's maybe the most open minded of the lot and loves trying new experiences. I don't think he takes sex particularly seriously often, it's something fun, it's a great release of endorphins and as such, I think he can dial down the intensity best and just be funny and silly with it.

100% has no preference between genders, he is an equal opportunity guy and if you ask, he might say yes regardless. I think he and Genesis are the most likely people to have fucked someone else they work with and still get on okay with them. I think he's just trying to get the most of his experiences without labelling them.

That doesn't mean he can't get intense. I think when he's gotten right into the moment, he can get very intense and instinctive. Like he might be a dope and he might squeal like a puppy but I think with him it's a matter of needing everything all at once. He's impatient so I do also think that means he pushes himself over the edge a lot sooner than he often means to.

Honestly I think his love language is wound up in that almost starry eyed sense of what love is, like it's a big feeling and he's not always great at expressing those because it's serious and really important. When he tries, he pulls it out as doing things for people in a way that's similar to Angeal but I think that makes sense. He's grown up with Angeal so it feels like humour and acts of service would translate. Like he is little sloppy in bed, there's no finesse to it, but he's absolutely about to make sure everyone has a good time.

Falls in love easily. He's a little spacy, he doesn't have the best track record for his attention span, but in the moment when he's with someone, they're his entire world. He has a great sense of devotion, we see it in canon with Cloud, but I don't think how spacy he is makes him easy to deal with so I think that's why he needs someone who understands that.

Cloud

I think Cloud does actually prefer men but in the same way as Genesis snuck under Angeal's wire, Tifa kind of snuck under his and they have a similar sense of young love. As such, I think he tends to lean more masculine for type but really, people who kick ass is probably his sexuality.

So sensitive to touch. Seriously. He is so easy to get worked up and get a very vocal response out of and he is so mad about it. I don't think it's voluntary, he's just someone who gets off on being given a lot of touch - both rough and affectionate - so it's easy to get him overwhelmed and squirming. We've all seen the Wall Market scene, it's practically a canon trait.

While I think he can match anyone's energy - well maybe not Zack, but who can? - I think when he's instigating anything sexual, he doesn't really leave wiggle room for interpretation. This isn't the 'gentle touches so you know I want to' with Angeal, it's not 'pushed into the nearest wall' like Sephiroth once he decides he wants it or Zack coming straight out and asking but I think the closest is probably Genesis in that he wants to challenge and be challenged. He wants pushback, he wants to feel it and they're damn well going to feel it tomorrow if he has anything to do with it.

I think as the person with the least experience in relationships and sex, he's a little more tentative. I think he enjoys finding kinks he enjoys, but it's a gradual gliding in and not jumping right in to trying it. There is a part that wants to seem aloof and will pushback against the idea he needs anything or anyone but I think the right people can dismantle that by dismantling him in the best way.

Chronic blusher and hates himself for it. Can and will attempt to hide it and it's genuinely pretty funny to see someone that turned on and that grumpy, no wonder Zack tends to get the giggles.

EC Sephiroth-Glenn Halloween Event Spoilers

I'm providing a spoiler summary for you guys here, since this concerns (noncanon??) FS content for the Halloween event. Chill dumb holiday fun below the cut.

The FS trio is minding its own business on the Rhadoran island getting the new mako reactor ready when they come across a strange portal! Matt explains that it's used for teleportation. Hojo gets namedropped again.

Glenn, like an idiot, just immediately hops on in. Sephiroth decides to go in to get him. Matt and Lucia stay behind.

They end up in spooky Halloween Nibelheim! Sephiroth says that Glenn is TOTALLY getting written up for being so reckless. He's concerned about staying focused on the mission. Little stickler for the rules!

While he's lecturing Glenn, the portal closes behind him. Now they're stuck here.

Glenn approaches a strange red hooded figure that turns into a spoopy pumpkin thing. Battle time!

This event is in honor of some sort of strange harvest festival for the holidays. Seph dumps some spooky lore. But there are real monsters wandering around. Glenn wants to evacuate everyone asap! Sephiroth advises that they take it slow and logical.

They come across a scared kid without a costume. The kid pleads for them to save his town from the Dark Army (festival lore shit). The monsters came out of a hole somewhere apparently, aka the portal.

So we gotta go find the leader of the Dark army if we want to find the portal materia. Glenn keeps calling himself a superhero. Aww.

To weed out the real monsters from the costumed civilians, we have to go up to them and say "tussle or treat". This is so fucking stupid lmao It's so cute. Glenn and Seph keep snipping at each other. Also cute.

After wandering around the town, Glenn and Seph can't find the army's leader. Montage of them butting heads and having no luck at all! Seph is gonna look into more Dark Army lore to find some clues.

The boy from earlier explains that the Dark Army eats people's feelings (anger, hate, fear, etc.) and they use them to grow. They scare people in order to feed. Glenn decides to go look for a main hideout. Seph, wanting to minimize casualties from this outing, still wants to keep a low profile.

Seph is STILL pissy about Glenn getting them into this situation. Glenn calls him a hard-ass. The monsters are dwindling but STILL no results! The boy points out that maybe they should wear costumes so that they can trick the monsters.

WHERE CAN THEY FIND COSTUMES YOU MAY ASK??? Oh shit oh fuck Seph run baby please.

Sephiroth is VERY suspicious of the boy since he keeps giving them perfect advice. The boy says that he and his friends sometimes go into the mansion to play. HMMMMMMMMMMM.

They arrive at the mansion (fuck). THEY ARE IN THE LIBRARY (FUCK FUCK FUCK). The boy reveals he doesn't know what Shinra is.

OH SHIT SEPHIROTH STARTS HAVING AN EPISODE.

Flashback dialogue HOJO: "ENDURE THE PAIN SEPHIROTH, YOU HAVE YET TO REACH YOUR THRESHHOLD THE MORE YOU ENDURE THE GREATER THE POWER WILL AWAKEN WITHIN YOU HEHE"

SAEDRFGHJGFDSFG FUCK ABUSED LAB RAT BACKSTORY FUCKING CONFIRMED.

Sephiroth seems okay after his brief spell. But Glenn is concerned, especially since he says Sephiroth always overworks himself. Sephiroth is surprised at this. No one has ever told him to take it easy. In fact, it's always been the opposite.

We're interrupted by another monster. Sephiroth is nervous that he led them here, after all they feed off of negative emotions.

Seph and Glenn find their costumes. Seph in his demon costume and Glenn in a pumpkin mask with a top hat.

It looks like we're finally nearing to defeat the leader. The boy reveals that HE'S been the leader all along! Called it. He reveals that in killing all the monsters, he gets to feed on as many people he wants.

After kicking the leader's ass, we finally reach the ending. Seph slices that fucker, while it warns them that so long as negative emotions exist, so will it.

Seph and Glenn seem to reconcile now that the portal is open, even finishing each other's sentences. Glenn suggests that for once, Seph should follow his lead and slack off with him at the festival and stuff their faces with festival food.

Seph's tummy rumbles and he's about to relent. But Glenn gets sucked into the portal anyway. Seph is sad he can't try the pumpkin soup now. Oh well!

In the epilogue, Seph and Glenn return to the others through the portal, still in costumes like idiots. Neither of them remember the events of the festival. So basically square can shitpost all they want without anyone remembering rofl this is SO STUPID AND GREAT

This was a cute story! And not without substance. The reveal about Hojo is genuinely horrifying.

so i am. horrifically, a funny little guy lover. almost immediately when i get my hands on a new ship i throw them in the "what digimon/pokemon/etc would they have!!!" machine and i've already done that with tserith for sure. ironically i remember less of the digimon one than the pokemon one but tseng had a qilinmon and aeris's would eventually evolve into smth like ancientkazemon. pokemon i developed with my dear friend @bbunbbi and aeris had brionne (gift from ifalna), floette, hattern (hated morgrem), and tseng had dragonair (childhood poke from wutai), seviper, and morgrem (shinra-appointed). morgrem had a huge character arc and brionne died with aeris. very sad! and god damn it while i was in the bath i was like. yeah give them medabots fuck it. that didn't get very far but i can say that tseng's medabot would work similar to snake man from mega man 3.

i don't think that's entirely in the spirit of this ask though since all of those would still take place ~in ff7/midgar~ and not like, true alternate universe. my actual answer is so corny. Plop them in anywhere from the early 19th to the early 20th century and my ass is Game. gothic regencies to wwi espionage sounds like such a goddamn romp and i will eat that shit up.

as a fun fact though the book i thought i was gonna write last year before vel chokeslammed me into the asphalt was one of those "fanfic-jump-to-actual-book" ideas where like. in a fantasy world that is starting to see magic-adjacent things recede from the world there's a monster prince arranged marriage romance going on between the last naga prince and a descendant of the now-gone(?) dryads. you know, "not tserith". but then vel, that fucker, fucking??? exploded out of thin air in late april last year and the rest is history whoops. i still want to write the naga prince book someday but whew.

Do you think Okhubo regretes making Kid be a charachter everybody just found out about a few days into the story and not someone who had prior history with any charachters besides his dad, patty and Liz?

I am way too mean to Ohkubo for a lot of things that are me overreacting. 

(That doesn’t include how he handles girls, women, and fanservice, because, LOL, no, that fucker has that criticism coming.)

(Oh, and spoilers below for Soul Eater and Fire Force. And a content warning regarding potentially disablist representations or arguments.)

It is hard for me not to look at how he handled Kid and not think, “You passed up so many storytelling opportunities.” 

Some of this, I think, is just out of his sense of humor, the equivalent of saying, “I could do this kind of story–but it’s funnier if Lord Death just one day made another child out of nowhere and based it off of the guy from 800+ years ago that brought him into existence.” 

There are at least two reasons why that “joke” doesn’t work for me. 

First, if you keep having joke after joke without moments of sentimentality or just honest affection, the jokes drag, and the serious moments fall apart. We are supposed to care about Kid when he sees his father has died. I don’t ignore that, yeah, that moment of Lord Death dying, and Kid learning about it, both land. But I think those moments would land better if you had more there to make us think Kid and Lord Death had a deeper relationship–which is harder when Kid seems like he barely had a childhood. 

(There is a counter-argument that I will address, as all of this does explain how Kid turned out how he did, and how Kid and Lord Death are just not human–but I’ll get to that in a moment.) 

Second, I get little sense Ohkubo knows how to represent varieties of parenting in his story, or a refusal to show them. It’s not as if there aren’t untraditional families in his all of his works–but those are either ones fans read into (Blair as more of a parental figure to Soul and Maka instead of…whatever the hell that last chapter was about) or ones that Ohkubo confirms in the story (Sid took in Black Star) but doesn’t pay off (Has anyone felt any sense of a familial bond from Black Star to Sid? I don’t mean whether Sid has parental regard for Sid–I mean, has there ever been any sense that Black Star sees Sid as anything other than just another teacher at the DWMA?). 

This isn’t to ignore that there are parents in his works, whether literal (Spirit is a well-developed parent, and I do find Maka’s regard for him to be earned in-story given what was shown to us) or otherwise untraditional (although some of it is either like a “big brother” like Yohei in B Ichi, or just confusing and underdeveloped, like Akitaru’s role towards Shinra in Fire Force). 

This leads to my counter-argument. I am convinced by fans who say, “Kid being introduced so late, and then Fire Force showing his origins in the finale, explains how Kid turned out how he did, and how Lord Death just screwed up as a parent to him and Asura.” Like, Lord Death just makes a child–and skips past baby stage, maybe even preschool stages, so that Kid is formed as more of a little adult rather than an actual baby and an actual child who has to slowly learn about the world and develop mentally and emotionally. Given how Kid behaves in the manga, an how Lord Death regards him, all of this checks out: regardless how much Lord Death did love Kid, and how the story insists he was making him to be his own person, there is still all of this other content that emphasizes that Lord Death saw Kid as his heir, and did handle his creation and development as preparation to be the next shinigami, not to be a human being. 

Which is also part of this counter-argument: if there is any good in Ohkubo’s choices, it lets him show how a shinigami like Lord Death and Kid differ from other people–because Lord Death made choices that a human wouldn’t typically make, and maybe that explains how Kid turned out, both genetically and socially. That being said, while it lets Ohkubo _show_ it, it all still feels half-baked and reliant more on what readers bring into the story than what the creator clearly shows. And I think this all raises really uncomfortable questions (given how Kid has been read as having obsessive compulsion and maybe other mental and behavioral conditions, writing all of that off as “he’s just not human” seems disablist). 

So, no, I don’t think Ohkubo regrets making Kid be a character everyone just found out about a few days into the story–because, sorry, I don’t think he planned much well. He avoided storytelling options: just as we don’t get to see Black Star’s regard for Sid after he dies, we don’t really get to see how the rest of the DWMA, and the world, views Kid. It helps with worldbuilding (if you suppose that Lord Death kept Kid’s identity secret to avoid him being a target, and out of his own desire to focus Kid on training to be a shinigami rather than having a, ahem, “normal” childhood as a student). But then we don’t get canon stories about, say, how Spirit regarded little Kid, or the other Death Scythes, or whether people who were involved with the DWMA since they were babies (Maka and Black Star) may have encountered Kid. Even when he gets the chance to “fix” any of this with the ending of Fire Force, he just doubles down: “Lord Death made Kid a small child at birth, there was no baby kid, all your fanfics are ruined–oh, and I’m going to pretend Kid always looked like Shinra when, no, he fucking doesn’t.”

let's begin with the fact that we both have been outcasted at kiddos, yeah?

Cloud hadn't been able to be accepted by Tifa's friend group, meanwhile I hadn't been able to be accepted by other kids due to my...heritage thanks to the fact that I spoke and looked different among of middle eastern group of kids

so....you can add the fact that we were both considered "weirdos" as kids to the list omg true love/s

not to mention how this both led us to being bitter? Yes I'd be lying if I said I didn't have anger issues(still do) and fought with my older brother's friends(but we're cool now). Same case with Cloud since he always put himself into fights with other kids, and eventually both of us just wanted to do smtg to be noticed/admired by someone too

no. Cloud didn't/doesn't hate Tifa for they way he was treated when they were younger. Like said I relate to what happened in our childhoods, and albeit some kids grow up to continue being a pain in the ass to ppl but some grow up to be friends later on, same case with me and my brother's friends. This ain't about me ofc tho but Tifa later on finds out what Cloud went through just to get her to notice him when they were younger, pair that with the trauma of the nibelheim incident and that just made them infinitely closer

There was no better conclusion to a work week than stealing the evening away with a friend, and Reno actually felt comfortable enough to include someone else in his extremely selective and miniscule group of confidants. The two of them were not sneaking around Midgar, but it held that same energy . . that same excitement. Almost like the time he snuck away to the industrial jungle gym of abandoned constriction materials, only Reno had been thirteen then and looking to get head from his friend. Reno was certainly not looking to get blown by Melissa, even the intrusive thought of it made him feel sordid five times over.

Electro mag-rod was made compact and hung by a leather band on his belt loop, then was set to rest on the surface of the roof. The smooth metal caught and reflected the distant beams of light, and the sight of his most trusted weapon brought a satisfied grin to lips. Suit and face were enough to clear the scum away, but Melissa was at his side . . there was no knowing the kinds of monsters which would arise from the sewers. More and more seemed to crawl out to be among the living each year. No concrete idea had been set to harden in mind regarding their plans, but the simple tranquility of being in another person's presence was a rarity he did not mind indulging in.

Even when it came to hanging out with his closest partner, the two men typically kept things superficial — drinks at a bar or drinks and a stupid show at either of their places. A drink on the roof would have been nice actually, but smelling the fresh smog corrupted air was fine enough. The red head made himself more comfortable by sitting down and then falling onto his back, arms lifting and hands cradling his cranium. No fascination was found with the sky, but Melissa's sudden question captured his attention. He snorted at the question, but waited to respond, knowing well when people asked such things they had ideas of their own in mind. Her response did not inspire laughter. He jerked his head upwards a little to look at her face, and the way the dim light of the burning cigarette as it reflected in her eyes and off her skin dully.

The time it took Reno to respond, it seemed like he had forgotten about the question. A great deal of time passed, so he made little thinking noises to let her know he had not forgotten. He didn't like talking about it, but he didn't exactly mind it either.

That derelict building between the slums from Sector 6 to Sector 5 was nothing but a den for lowlifes and criminals waiting to ambush the average underplater; but with a Turk at one's side, they were nothing but a minor nuisance. Reno was quick to take care of it and send the guys running (who knew better than try and source back-up when one donned the trademark Shinra suit), and they both climbed to the top of the abandoned place.

Once cleaned of the filth, it had a very good view of the skies above - at least of the patches that the plate structure didn't cover up. That far from the Wall Market and its endless neon signs and with whatever greenery and calm environment, they could pretend to be removed from the slums. In fact - they both had outlived that. Reno worked topside; Melissa had built herself a luxurious kingdom.

But it didn't change the fact they were slum born and bred, of course.

"What did you want to be growing up?" the woman asked while watching the smoke of her cigarette; not a vice she indulged into very often, but which felt right with the redhead's company, "I wanted to be an actress. Edge City has grown from the remains of Midgar, purpose-built structures fanning outward and spilling across the badlands in the shadow of devastation. Life moves on. Finds a way to move forward, at least overall, even if some are still mired in the past.

One has to have a past, understand its foundations, in order to build a future.

The World Regenesis Organization oversees the development here; a monument to those lost to Meteorfall is under construction in the city square, and all the while people work to pave streets, construct shopfronts and restaurants and reestablish some semblance of infrastructure with scrap from the monster-infested and mako-exposed ruin to the west and south. It was a rocky start at first, but now - with connections to Kalm, the mythril and coal seams beyond - trade has returned.

With trade comes disputes.

And some are not so eager to let go of harmful patterns, of presumptions. The only SOLDIER, ex-SOLDIER, welcome in Edge is one Cloud Strife of Strife Delivery Services, and even then -- only because of who he is, his associates, what they have done. Soon that will pass into history too, and then what?

Edge is on edge with the proliferation of a new wasting disease, an undercurrent of despair and enmity and desperation. As though close quarters and daily reminders of what was weren't enough.

Kunsel can hardly blame them. They are just trying to get by, to make sense of it all and go about their day-to-day. Except...

"Look, I was open about this from the start. I'm not here to cause trouble," Kunsel says, even and calm, standing at the base of the clinic stairs. In plain sight of the square, in a low-profile armored coat--carbon black, like his boots, his trousers--and with a pair of curved swords crossed on his back, he faces down a man who looks to have a second career as a goalie of some kind. Coarse, rough, in maintenance blues, armed and blocking the way, the guard seems not to care about hands raised in surrender or placation.

"Fucker, I don't care if you were open about shit. You ARE trouble. Your kind's not welcome here. Get. Out," the man spits.

"I get it. I fix your comms relay, you run me off, your boss doesn't have to pay, you get a pat on the head. Is that it..." Ah, he has a name tag. "Robertson?"

"This is all me and Shotty here. You've got five seconds to turn the fuck around and walk the fuck away, 'fore I put you in the ground. Call it justice. You shoulda died with the rest of the 'heroes.' Fucking monsters-"

Tumblers and gears click into place. It would not matter if he were wearing farmer’s overalls rather than his First Class equipment, or even his old Second Class helmet. People might not know the unique custom uniforms, but they do know the uncanny look of eyes stained like the heart of a reactor. Kunsel regards Robertson's stance, the weapon in his hands, the barrel of the gun aimed near point-blank for his face. "Huh. ShinRa MCS."

"FIVE." Safety's off.

"Mag extension, CQB configuration. Your posture's familiar-"

"FOUR." Round chambered.

"-aaaand you've got the same blind spot, 'cause your buckshot's gonna keep going into the marketplace when you miss. You really gonna take that risk? For what, a decade-old pissing contest?"

"THREE."

"Alright, look-" Lightning-fast, Kunsel snatches the weapon from the man's hands. Rapid disassembly of a modular military shotgun is academic and efficient; the murmuration from the crowd of gawkers is expected, prickling unease at his nape - more than outright posturing or the threat of violence does. Barrel, shells, firing mechanisms, and stock drop into the dirt. It will take time to clean and reassemble, and that is enough of an inconvenience. Kunsel still does not raise his voice. "-I don't have time for the old infantry-versus-SOLDIER circle jerk. We were all jammed up the President's ass and we share the same stink. You should have a chat with your boss. Ask him about it. Morrow is old-school Science department. Or you can let me have a chat with him and I’ll be out of your hair--"

Robertson punctuates their discussion with a right hook that careens into Kunsel's mouth, echoing a solid crack.

It is almost like striking a brick wall sheathed in flesh--a wall that is not completely unmoved, but one that does not topple. Robertson splits Kunsel’s lip, but also splits open his own knuckles in the process, and the shock of pain only compounds his fury. He surges down the stairs as Kunsel steps backward, gloved hands lifted.

Great. Just. Great.

The crowd is uneasy, nightfall is soon, and the last thing he wants is to meet the business end of a bunch of civilian pitchforks.

A few paces away, he turns for a tactical retreat at an angle, keeping the clinic in his peripheral vision. The crowd, by and large, gives him a berth as he walks along reclaimed cobblestones, slipping between the corrugated panels of a ramshackle fence into a broad alleyway between two new prefab buildings.

He should take a moment. Take a breather. Think about next steps.

A crate will do as a perch until its owner shoos him off. He sits there, tongues his lip and runs his hand over his face and hair, chewing bitterness and frustration like grist as he listens to the muffled sounds beyond.

You guys discussing Project G and Genesis reminded me of when I started researching Genesis’ history with Deepground and the horror of Deepground itself….and fuck.

Shinra obviously arranged the whole place, but I am positive Hojo was the one running it, because you can see the signs of his type of influence everywhere and it’s utterly terrifying.

For instance, don’t look too deeply into literally everything about Weiss or you’ll start to see some extremely eerie parallels to Sephiroth, particularly insane Sephiroth. From his specific design and weaponry, to his hatred of humanity, to his violent relationship with authority, to Hojo specifically controlling him…and…well, he was the first and the best of all Deepground’s soldiers, wasn’t he.

I swear, Hojo has been trying to recreate and control Sephiroth for so long. Weiss had to have been another one of his brainchildren.

Hell, maybe Hojo tried to create a better Vincent with Nero too.

Then there are the Tsviets like Rosso and Shelke, who were so fucked up by the experimentation and brutal soldier training they went through that they either turned into sadists or were stunted in some way that specifically related to childhood. All of them have Hojo’s exact style of horror all over them when you really break them down and analyze their stories and personalities. You can just see his handiwork.

And when I put this together, I began to strongly suspect that this was all more evidence, all more implication of what happened with Sephiroth. He was the strongest soldier ever created. The strongest in humanity. Nothing could parallel him, and with his strength he survived everything that Hojo threw at him—the same type of brutality that broke the psyches of the Deepground soldiers.

Sephiroth was simply too powerful. Until Nibelheim and until he literally could not take it anymore. He has all of the key traits of the broken-minded Tsviets combined, and his post-insanity agenda went beyond any of theirs. He didn’t decide to hunt only certain humans like Weiss or just be a sadist killer like Rosso—he wanted to erase mankind from existence all together and hated them with every shred of his strength.

I am sure Deepground and all of those key plot-points in Dirge were unique, but also absolutely meant to explain the catastrophe we see at the beginning that is meteor and why the person that summoned it did what he did. Dirge does this a lot, also by having more backstory for Lucrecia and Vincent as well, also showing Hojo’s sadism at its worst…I think it’s why Hojo was the ultimate villain.

Dirge only vaguely addresses Sephiroth directly, but so much of its story revolves around him with this unspoken dread and tragedy.

The game asks you, “Ok, you beat Sephiroth…but was he ever the true villain behind everything? Or did it go deeper than that…”

That very question leads us straight to Hojo. No coincidence.

Hojo pretty much has his hand in everything. In every story except for Advent Children, he's pretty much the catalyst for so much trauma. I admire his commitment. The fucker.

But yeah, it wouldn't surprise me if all of Deepground and the Tsviets was Hojo's doing. It's totally his style.

On the one hand she’s very skilled and Genesis remarks about how she should be promoted for her skills, and on the other she is being trained by Sephiroth. Additionally, I don’t believe she’s had Mako injections/hasn’t been exposed to them for too long since she has yellow eyes. Sephiroth remarks internally how they seem to glow, which I believe is metaphorical but Mako does give people exposed to it a glow in their eyes. Idk if it actively changes their eye colour or only gives them that glow so I can’t say for certain where she is lmao. 

Her fanfic isn’t getting a rewrite just because I don’t care much for Final Fantasy that much anymore and because I would need to write in parts of Crisis Core which I would die doing lol. Also I really don’t like how she’s supposed to be a love interest for Sephiroth despite being about ten to twelve years younger than him. I know I regularly joke abt liking older men and that I am a certified (fictional) DILF fucker, but this is too much. I would age her up a bit, since I don’t think you can even apply to SOLDIER at eighteen years old. 

Instead, say I were theoretically to rewrite her fic, I think she should have been Sephiroth’s apprentice like Zack is sort of Angeal’s. They’re both lonely prodigies who don’t understand regular people too much. It’s very interesting to think of Sephiroth taking her under his wing since her backstory has some implies some heavy trauma. He may not relate to it at this stage but his circumstances growing up were definitely not ideal for a child considering he didn’t even know his parents’ names until he was like thirty and was probably raised within Shinra. I love the idea of Sephiroth accidentally becoming this traumatized teenager’s father lmao. I also really like writing father/child relationships because my relationship with my dad is far from ideal. 

Genesis notes how she laughs a lot and makes out of place jokes a lot as if compensating for something which Riku merely brushes off. In literally the first chapter she remarks about how she’s not allowed to learn the true extent of her (very wealthy) family’s fighting technique/some other secret (young me was not clear lmao) until she’s married. So her family is likely very patricarchal and she’s either an only child or the eldest considering she knows this top secret technique, not a good position. 

In this theoretical rewrite I would have Riku be a SOLDIER already, and maybe friends with Zack because the mental image of Angeal and Sephiroth trying to wrangle in their respective hyperactive apprentice is very funny to me. She’s going against her family’s wishes in doing so since she was supposed to get married right out of high school and be a good little trophy wife. Most of the story would surround her freeing herself from her family and being herself. I think I’d also have her struggle with her feminity a bit because that’s a natural result of being told you’re there to commodify men or that as a woman you are expected to be this and that. Especially when people close to you do this it’s very damning to your self image. (Boy do I know that feeling *looks at my dad*) 

Riku would also help Sephiroth’s emotional situation out greatly, I just really love almost familial mentor/student relationships okay. I have a vivid image of Riku fucking something up and Sephiroth expressing how he’s not disappointed in her but rather a little upset for the time being. A perfect contrast to her own shitty ass father boy I’m projecting hard. Crisis Core Sephiroth just seems like such a guy, he doesn’t seem hateful in any capacity at all. And the way him and Zack interact is cute, I really love the scene where they’re talking on the phone and Sephiroth just sounds like a father trying to calm down his over exited son. Still chugging copuim will FF7 remake part two give us sane Sephiroth? 

Anyways point is Sephiroth being a supportive father figure/mentor, albeit a bit strict, doesn’t seem very far fetched. I believe that him and Riku would start out at some odds, since to be fair, I don’t think having yet another man having to keep you in line and exercise power over you sounds appealing to someone who’s only ever had negative experiences with older men. But Sephiroth will be damned if he can’t train up someone to be better than him and eventually gets through to her. Yes, he is strict but he acknowledges when it’s too much and when Riku has met his expectations. Even if she doesn’t, CC! Sephiroth doesn’t strike me as a complete piece of shit. 

And it all seems great with just a little bit of the Crisis Core plot looming over everyone’s heads. Until Riku is forced to resign from SOLDIER because her father is marrying her off to some rich prick. This affects her greatly and she’s barred from going to Nibelheim with Zack and Sephiroth, either a blessing or a curse. Sephiroth solemnly sends her off with a small ornamental knife “Your dowry, or a wedding gift. You decide” 

And then we don’t see her again until he events of Advent Children/whatever the shit happens after the FF7 remake. Yayyy. 

This is just me writing notes for her character arc when she inevitably shows up in my original story.
