1937 Hong Kong Clipper - Stan Stokes
The Glen L. Martin Company had a long history as a designer and manufacturer of successful flying boats. The company had developed several different flying boats for the Navy, including the PM the P3M and the XP2M. However, when the company began considering the development of a large commercial flying boat for Pan Am, there was considerable internal controversy. The Great Depression was underway and many aircraft manufacturers were going bankrupt. Glenn Martin insisted that the company proceed, and lie was highly motivated to show the world that his organization could design and produce the finest flying boat ever built. The end product of their efforts was the M-130. Credit for its design is shared with Martins Chief Engineer (L.C. Milburn), the Project Engineer (L.D. McCarthy), test pilot (WX. Ebel), and Pail Ams Chief Engineer (Andre Priester.) The first of the three MA 3 Os was the China Clipper. It made its maiden flight on December 30, 1934. The M- 130 had a wingspan of 130 feet, a gross weight of 5 1,000 pounds, and was initially powered by four Twin Wasp radials generating 830-HP each. (In 1938 more powerful engines and automatically adjustable pitch props were refitted onto all three M-130s.) The M-130 had a capacity of 32 passengers, and were equipped with 18 sleeping births. They were flown by a crew of eight professionals. The practical range of the aircraft with a normal load was about 3000-miles, which at a typical cruising speed of 130-MPH implied an endurance of almost 24 hours in the air. One unique design feature of the M-130 was the use of sponsons, or water wings, which actually helped the aircraft lift off from the water. The three M-130s were christened the China, Hawaii and Philippine Clippers by Pan Am. The China Clipper was accepted by Pan Am in October of 1935. In November this aircraft flew from Alameda, California to Manila in the Philippines; completing the 8,200 mile journey with a total flight time of 59 hours and 48 minutes. It arrived in Manila only two minutes behind its scheduled arrival time. The Philippine Clipper entered service next and was used for survey flights to map the Manila to Hong Kong route. The Hawaii Clipper entered service in October of 1936. This aircraft, unfortunately was lost during a flight in 1938 from Guarn to Manila, and its fate is unknown. The Philippine Clipper was lost in 1943 on a flight from Hawaii to San Francisco. Lost in bad weather the plane hit a mountain northwest of the city. The China Clipper was utilized by the US Navy during the War, and was returned to Pan AM in late 1943. For the next year it flew the route from Miami to Africa. On the night of January 18, 1945 the China Clipper crashed while attempting a landing in Trinidad. At the time of this tragedy the aircraft had successfully flown more than three million miles. In Stan Stokes painting the China Clipper takes off from Hong Kongs busy harbor in the late 1930s. The China Clipper may be the best known and most-loved commercial aircraft in history. It signalled the beginning of long distance commercial airline service, which by revolutionizing international passenger travel and mail delivery, made the Earth a rnuch smaller place for all of its inhabitants

High Adventure in White Sands National Park
flickr
High Adventure in White Sands National Park by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A setting looking to the west while taking in views across white sands and dune formations present along the Alkali Flat Trail in White Sands National Park. My thought on composing this image was to take advantage of some high ground that I was walking on along with this one dune ridge. I decided to use that to capture a sweeping view, looking across the many different dune ridges leading up to the more distant San Andres Mountains, with the particular cloud formation above it.

sometimes ghosts travel by day.
humans are natural, instinctual, compulsive storytellers—we don’t know how to not tell stories. we’ll tell them in any medium we can: tall tales around campfires or on long hunts; during play as children and in theaters as grown-ups; written down as poems that rhyme and poems that don’t, epic novels and short stories and everything in between, letters and articles and tweets; tribal dances and boyband choreography; music that moves your heart and soul.
and art, which can be sculptures of any material we can mold, or a photograph, or a painting so realistic it looks like a photograph, or splashes of color across a white canvas, or, or, or, or. our need to tell stories is so strong that we’ll even laboriously etch designs into rock when the need to spin a yarn strikes, as the jornada mogollon people did around 1000-1450 c.e. at the three rivers petroglyph site.
three rivers sits on the northern end of new mexico’s tularosa basin, cradled by the sacramento, san andres, and oscura mountains. as i walked through the gallery of boulders, the mountains were blushing blue in the distance and there was a cool breeze softening the rising heat of a mid-morning sun, but even more stunning were the stories.
there are over 20,000 stories told in petroglyphs at this site. stories about birds and bugs, friends and foes, rain and sun, lizards and sheep and cougars, life and death and creation. there are stories about hope, and fear, and love, and grief.
walking among them, i thought about how these stories aren’t so different than the ones we tell now. i thought about all the stories i’ve written, the fear and grief and love and hope, and i think that i would etch them into stone if i had to, too.

News from Belize, 21 July
The Santa Rita Cemetery in Cayo District is at full capacity, with only reserved or pre-paid plots available for burials.
The municipality is seeking to purchase a 10-acre piece of land for a second cemetery, but they need to raise $50,000 as a down payment.
2. Despite reaching out to the government for assistance, the municipality has not received any support thus far.
A fire in Dangriga has left a man homeless after his home was completely destroyed.
The cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation.
Andre Garcia, the victim, is in need of assistance and can be reached at 602-4856.
3. The Fire Department has initiated a probe into the explosion that occurred in Neuland Community, Corozal District on Tuesday night, resulting in the tragic loss of an infant and a toddler.
4. There was a fire in the Shipyard Community, Orange Walk District on Monday. The Belize National Fire Service initiated an investigation into the matter and discovered that it was caused by a malfunction in the equipment used on a tanker truck transporting crude oil.
5. The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is intensifying its efforts to combat cyber-criminals in the region by collaborating with member states. Today, the Ministry of Home Affairs, in conjunction with CARICOM's Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS), organized a meeting for the "Cyber-in-country Sensitization and Training 2023" project, funded by the European Union. The project aims to enhance capacity building in cybercrime prevention, detection, investigation, and prosecution. The training will assist law enforcement agencies, the banking sector, and the judicial sector in addressing financial crime, cybercrime, and asset recovery.
6. Belize Agricultural Health Authority is remaining vigilant amid a New World Screwworm outbreak in Central America.
youtube
Of note is that there has only been one case of the New World Screwworm outbreak in Costa Rica, where a dog was illegally imported from Panama.
7. In response to an increase in human activity in the Cooma Cairn area of the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve in the western Cayo District, Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) inaugurated a new ranger outpost on Monday.
Over the past 14 months, FCD has dispatched rangers to support the Forest Department in monitoring activities, including forest fire incidents and bark beetle infestations. They are also monitoring the condition of the Upper Macal Watershed through public participation and research, as well as human activity in the reserve, which is the gateway to the Chiquibul National Park and has experienced increased human presence due to the upgrade of the Caracol Road in the area.
Thanks to the endorsement from the Forest Department, which allows FCD to use the building, and the financing from Bull Run Overseas Limited for the refurbishment costs, the refurbished Ranger Outpost is now operational. This building was previously occupied by the British Army Training and Support Unit Belize (BATSUB) and will now serve as the central hub for FCD's monitoring program in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve.

New Mexico’s White Sands An astronaut aboard the International Space Station took this photograph of White Sands National Park in south-central New Mexico. The park is situated in the Tularosa Basin and spans roughly the southern half of a 275-square-mile (712-square-kilometer) dune field. The dunes appear bright white in the otherwise reddish-brown landscape. The light color is due to gypsum that was deposited in ancient Lake Otero, a water body that existed in the area when the climate was cooler and wetter. The gypsum originated from the nearby San Andres Mountains and first began washing into the basin close to the end of the last ice age, about 11,000 years ago. Today, the site is the largest gypsum dune field in the world. New deposits of gypsum are added to the sand dunes when mineral-rich waters from the surrounding mountains drain into the southwest margin of White Sands and subsequently evaporate to form gypsum crystals. Over the years, wind processes have eroded and shaped the dunes to reach about 60 feet (18 meters) tall. The White Sands region has a rich history in the aerospace industry. NASA utilized three runways built on the northern part of the lakebed for rocket testing and shuttle pilot training. The White Sands Space Harbor was used for one space shuttle landing when STS-3 returned from its eight-day mission to space. NASA continues to operate its White Sands Test Facility located just outside the bottom left of the photo. More recently, White Sands served a critical role in the commercial space industry as the landing location for Boeing CST-100 Starliner’s Orbit Flight Test-1 in December 2019 and Boeing CST-100 Starliner’s Orbit Flight Test-2 in May 2022. The space harbor is also designated as the landing location for Boeing’s first crewed mission (Boeing Starliner-1) scheduled to fly to the space station later in 2023. In addition to NASA operations, the U.S. Department of Defense operates nearby sites including the Holloman Air Force Base. Astronaut photograph ISS068-E-33229 was acquired on December 26, 2022, with a Nikon D5 digital camera using a focal length of 210 millimeters. It is provided by the ISS Crew Earth Observations Facility and the Earth Science and Remote Sensing Unit, Johnson Space Center. The image was taken by a member of the Expedition 68 crew. The image has been cropped and enhanced to improve contrast, and lens artifacts have been removed. The International Space Station Program supports the laboratory as part of the ISS National Lab to help astronauts take pictures of Earth that will be of the greatest value to scientists and the public, and to make those images freely available on the Internet. Additional images taken by astronauts and cosmonauts can be viewed at the NASA/JSC Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth. Caption by Cadan Cummings, Jacobs, JETS Contract at NASA-JSC.

Capturing the Silence of Sounds While Walking in White Sands National Park (Black and White) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A view looking to the southwest across the white sands desert landscape present in this part of the national park while walking the Alkali Flat Trail. My thought on composing this image was to capture a sweeping view with the ripples across the sandy landscape. Angling my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward, would also bring the horizon a little higher into the image to better bring that effect out. The other thing I wanted to capture was the, or what I thought was, the unusual cloud formation above the San Andres Mountains. I later performed a conversion to black & white using Silver Efex Pro 3 where I made some adjustments to color filters to bring out a much richer tonal contrast for the final image.
