Not enough people are talking about Sheila Chandra, one of the great voices of the '90s. Her involuntary silence for more than a decade makes these albums all the more precious.

A primitive mix of largely a cappella recordings and other vocal oddities, all stitched together in a very simple way. It’s hopefully entertaining and challenging in equal measure, and something that I hope summons joy, fear, sadness and laughter!

The Fire Fountain
This is for the Vesuvia weekly How it went wrong (ft the arcana familiars) prompt. It's a lil writing with a self-insert. Hope you like it!
(M6 X MC [Platonic])
It's just a usual day, I'm reading a book on "How to Cook a Skink 101". Suddenly something lands on my head. It's my familiar, Sheila, her bunny ears obscuring my vision. "Chaos." Sheila tells me. "What happened?" Sheila jumps off, encouraging me to follow.
Sheila leads me to Townsquare. Amongst the crowds, I spot Asra and the others standing before the source of the panic. It was the fountain. But instead of water flowing, it was fire. Sheila stops and lets me pick her up. I look to the others. "What happened here?!" Portia shrugs. "I dunno. I was looking for Pepi when I saw her here, in front of the fire." Pepi meows in response.
Faust looks proud. "Magic fountain! Warm." Lucio is pouting, petting the fur of Mercedes and Melchior. "Well, it almost burned my precious dogs!" He gestures to his expensive hunting dogs. Nadia is rubbing her temples, bothered by a headache. "Well let's fix this before it does any more damage. Asra, Faust said this is magic, so will water work?" Asra looks to Faust, and she drops a small pouch in Asra's hands. "Hmm. No. It won't work. The spell creates everlasting fire. Water won't work. Only another spell can extinguish it. I will go get the spellbook. Be right back!" Asra then speeds off with Faust.
Now it's just us, and our familiars. Nadia mumbles something to her familiar, Chandra, and she flies off. Portia is at the side, scolding Pepi, and Lucio's petting his dogs, trying to calm them down. They look completely fine, even looking proud. I think they had something to do with this fire fountain. Julian is nowhere to be found, and Muriel is sitting on the floor, with Innana sleeping on his lap.
"Hey Muriel. Is she okay?" I gesture to the sleeping Innana. Muriel pets her on the head. "She's fine. Just tired." I smile, relieved. "That's good then. You should go back to your cabin then if she's tired." Muriel looks away. "I will, once this disaster is done." I pat Innana on the head. "Okay then. I'll go find Ilya." I then turn around to look for Julian, when I suddenly bump into Nadia.
"Oh, hey Nadi. Everything okay?" She smiles. "Yes, everything is fine, I just sent Chandra to tell the people to stay away. Is Muriel and his familiar alright?" I nod in response. Then suddenly Asra and Julian rush in, with the books and ingredients needed. "We're back with the books!" Julian says as Malak lands on his head.
Asra nods in my direction. I nod back and we hold hands to start the spell. Then suddenly a voice from behind me speaks. "I'll help." I turn around and find out it's Muriel. Then Nadia joins in. "I will offer my help as well." She then holds my hands and we say the words of the spell.
The fire slowly dies out. The fountain itself is fine, just suffered minor discoloration. Once we were done, night was about to fall, so we all said our goodbyes and went home.
Well, that's it! Hope y'all liked the story!

I was tagged by @celebkiriedhel, sooooo.....
🎶✨ when u get this u have to put 5 songs u actually listen to, and publish. then, send this ask/tag 10 of your favorite followers (non-negotiable, positivity is cool)✨🎶
I've been in a bit of an…eclectic…phase lately, so here's some stuff that's gotten a lot of "airplay" in my house lately. I'm cutting it because I babbled, but before I do that I'll tag: @anamoon63, @enable--llamas, @hazely-sims, @batsheba, @lilleputtu, @echoweaver, @nectar-cellar, @erasabledinosaur, and whoever else might want to do this. Of course, feel free to ignore for any reason. No pressure at all from me!
OK, here we go...
The Gladiator score. The whole thing. I so wish I had played on this one, because it's awesome. Plus, I love Lisa Gerrard. But, on the other hand, I can totally understand why Gustav Holst's estate sued Hans Zimmer's ass because that battle theme sounds an awful lot like Mars, Bringer of War from the Planets Suite. Maybe it was intentional, what with the movie being set in Roman times and Mars being the Roman god of war, but if so you'd think they could have gotten some permission. Apparently not!
Prem Kavita/Wings of the Dawn - Monsoon This is Indipop from the early 80s. No, that isn't indie pop. It's a fusion of Indian music with Western pop. Monsoon sort of pioneered it, and it never really caught on, but as I understand it, it's rising in popularity again. And I love it. Y'all can have your J-pop and K-pop. Gimme all the Indipop. I linked to the Hindi version of the song because I like it better, but there's an English version, too.
Also, I love Sheila Chandra, Monsoon's singer, as a solo artist. It's just a tragedy that she has burning mouth syndrome and is now basically mute. :( Also also, I would love to learn to play the sitar.
Cafe de Anatolia Keeping with a world music theme… This is a 24/7 YouTube stream from a small record label based in Turkey that specializes in a fusion of ethnic music (mostly Middle Eastern and south Asian) with house music, two things that I love. The music is at once meditative and something that you can dance to. I do belly dancing for exercise (it's amazing for your core), and this stream or something else on the same channel is great music for practicing.
Ojos Asi - Shakira Speaking of belly dancing…Ah, Shakira. This is a long remix of my favorite song of hers. Great for belly dancing.
And finally, for something completely different...
One - Apocalyptica Who needs electric guitars to play Metallica songs when you have four Finns from the Sibelius Academy with cellos? I challenge you to tell the difference from about 3:30 to the end. (Also, I have very fond memories of an impromptu jam during a looooooooooooooooong recording session for the first Transformers movie, when we were waiting eternally for Michael Bay reasons, and one of the cellists just started playing the opening pizzicato arpeggios for Apocalyptica's version of "Nothing Else Matters," and the rest of us just started playing the rest. Then the brass players joined in. Good times.)

So, if you've got some coin in the piggy bank, treat yourself and support your favorite acts. So far today, I've bought a stack of jaimie branch and Sheila Chandra, two fantastic musicians who, due to death or illness, ceased their careers.

Police in Kenya are investigating the death of young fashion designer and LGBTQ activist Edwin Chiloba after his body was found dumped in a metal box by the roadside near the town of Eldoret.
A suspect believed to be a friend of the victim has been arrested but police have not spoken about a motive.
Rights organisations in Kenya, where gay sex is outlawed, have linked the killing to his sexuality.
One group estimates that more than half of LGBTQ Kenyans have been assaulted.
"Words cannot even explain how we as a community are feeling right now. Another soul lost due to hate. You will be missed," rights organisation galck+ posted on Twitter.
"Edwin's death reminds us that queer bodies continue to be under attack all over the country," the National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission wrote on Instagram.
Tributes on social media describe Chiloba, who was in his mid-20s, as "an amazing human" and an "iconic fashion designer".
Last month Chiloba wrote on Instagram that he was "going to fight for all marginalised people", saying that he himself had been marginalised.
He "spread love wherever he went, was bold about his existence as a queer man and encouraged many others to do the same," Chris Makena, an activist and friend of Chiloba, told the BBC.
He had moved to Eldoret from the capital, Nairobi, in 2019 to study fashion and was beginning to make a name for himself in design, another friend said.
His body was discovered on Wednesday.
A witness is quoted as saying that someone in a vehicle without a number plate was seen leaving a metal box at the side of the road.
It was reported to the police, who went to open the box to find the corpse.
"We don't know for now why he was killed that way. Experts are handling the matter," police spokesperson Resila Onyango was earlier quoted by the Star newspaper as saying.
She later sent a text message to the Reuters news agency saying that one male suspect had been arrested "but the matter is still under investigation".
Another police officer said the suspect is thought to have been a long-time friend of Chiloba, the AFP news agency reports.
Gay sex in Kenya is punishable by up to 14 years in prison. Though it is rarely enforced, members of the country's LGBTQ community routinely face discrimination and stigma, and efforts to decriminalise gay sex have been thwarted.
Last year, the killing of non-binary lesbian Sheila Lumumba led to a social media campaign to get #JusticeForSheila.
There were similar campaigns in 2021 following the murders of trans-woman activist Erica Chandra and LGBTQ activist Joash Mosoti.

From “The Voice of Sheila Chandra” by Kazim Ali. Text ID under cut.
[Text ID: August 7 Predawn blue and blue the sound Of the sea further away and less violent lights On the water fishing boats closer than I Imagined no one is awake some animals Maybe what I do without knowing in a Harrowing world what I do without knowing As I listen to the gurgle of water against The promontory I feel like I am listening To a body how slow and opening a piece Of tune where one does not know how It will unfold no chord or cadence to tell You in sound what the path will be how It will happen until it happens I do not want To be alone what does it mean anyway when Someone says “Muslim”]
