Shoebill (Balaeniceps rex), family Balaenicipitidae, order Pelicaniformes, Uganda
This bird is the only member of its family.
The taxonomic affinities of this bird have long been debated. It currently rests within the order Pelicaniformes. It was, in the past, often placed in the Ciconiiformes.
Its closest living relative is most likely the Hamerkop.

There was a post about creating the "Most Horrible Gryphon" and the Shoebill-Komodo Dragon barged into my brain and stood in the doorway making horrible clicking and hissing noises.
So, I had to draw him, of course, to save my own life. Meet the Gryphoebill Dragon and despair! 💖

the shoebill stork or shoebill, also known as the whalebill, is a large bird found dwelling near bodies of water in tropical east africa. despite their name, they are not true storks, and are more closely related to pelicans and herons. they primarily feed on fish, but will take other prey ranging from amphibians to small mammals. they are often silent apart from the clattering of their large bills, which has been compared to gunfire. shoebills are shy by nature and avoid human contact, which has led to further disturbance of the species’ natural behaviors as their habitat shrinks.
