I apologise if you already did something like this, but I had a thought, so I wanted to share it: TMFU RWRB AU. If we ignore/rewrite ~100 years of history, Illya could be a member of the Russian tsar family (who would still be in power in this AU). And Napoleon could be the son of the US president. Do you have any thoughts on it?

Alternatively (thought this wouldn't really be a RWRB AU, but I thought of it during the scene where Alex is memorising facts about Henry's life), Illya could be a member of the tsar family and Napoleon could be a spy sent on a mission to spy on him (I guess part of the objective would be getting close to Illya and winning his trust, so Napoleon would plan to seduce him). So, Napoleon learns all about Illya from the files, memorises all his likes and dislikes and such, and then goes to Russia to carry out his mission. He falls in love with Illya for real, but unfortunately, Illya finds out that he is a spy and he gets angry and starts believing that none of Napoleon's feelings were genuine. Cue lots od angst. But they'd make up eventually, of course.

So I've had someone prompt a RWRB AU for lokius, but I had never considered a napollya one, and it's kind of shocking how well it works give how different the source materials are lmao.

Honestly "if we ignore/rewrite ~100 years of history" is a great premise for an AU to start with. Yes, absolutely, let's do Russian royalty is still a thing, but also if the US and Russia still don't really like each other that much? If they're one false move away from open hostilities? A ridiculous spat like falling into a cake could ACTUALLY cause an international incident and be devastating for foreign relations. Also consider Illya losing his father at a young age (not dead in TMFU, but could be adapted that way), absolutely being a frigid ass to Napoleon at every opportunity because Napoleon is too damned pretty, and of course Illya could never, ever actually be gay openly. Napoleon would make a great FSOTUS heartthrob, with Gaby in the Nora role? Perfection. The only thing idk is what Waverly's role in all of this could be. There are some interesting potential twists too, like if Illya is an only child like in TMFU canon he'd actually be the heir to the throne. (Why do I kind of feel like this would end with the fall of the alternate-history Russian monarchy? 😅)

Ok, and I also LOVE your second option too, I'd probably set this one in the last days of the actual Russian monarchy. All the hidden identity stuff would be SO painful and so amazing. I'm just getting a feeling like Illya wouldn't easily trust people, so it takes a while for Napoleon to break past his walls, which makes the fact that Napoleon ultimately betrays the trust when Illya opens up to him so much worse. Of course he'd manage to prove himself to Illya and probably help Illya escape in the end.

1.What made you ship it? -granted this is leaning HEAVILY on headcanons given the only real source we have for their relationship is largely between a Geoff Johns interview and Vlad's Who's Who entry in The New Golden Age (2022) #1 BUT i think what largely drew me to it was simply the concept of the one single other person in the world who is evenly matched with Alan in every single way. as a huge fan of Superman: Red Son generally too im SO fascinated by the concept of how someone with powers like Alan might be changed by growing up in that environment. the fact that Vlad's described as being an expert hand-to-hand combatant, a highly successful Red Army assassin, that it's mentioned he and Alan actually worked together TMFU-style and whatever happened impacted Alan enough that he asked if he could work again. that Geoff himself said he created Vald with the EXPLICIT purpose of making it so Alan could be the main character of the universe. all these unanswered that im DESPERATE to see how it plays out. everything's just soooo immensely delicious to imagine.

2. What are your favorite things about the ship? -THE DRAMA. literal star-crossed lovers. the way the two of them come from SUCH vastly different walks of life it's insane. Vlad's a deadly trained soldier with the full sponsorship of the Red Army and Communist Russia, given his powers by scientific experimentation for the specific purpose of being the Green Lantern's equal/superior. compared to Alan-- received his powers after a near-death accident, and remained largely a street hero for the vast majority of his history even after joining the JSA, self-trained, and at one point so at odds with his own government he'd sooner accept forced retirement than do what they say. and yet, despite all that, despite their apparent frequent clashes, the occasion they have to work together impacts them SO much Alan is driven to want to have it happen again. what happened!!!! that's all i want to know.

3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

-probably the fact that even if i do ship them, i really don't see any kind of typical "happy" ending for them. what little else i've seen of other people shipping it imo have a wayyyyy too unrealistic expectation of the emotional aspect of it. they love each other and all but definitely do not get married at any point or ever or even live together. Vlad's been MIA and presumed dead for decades now (im assuming anyhow, as of this writing that's what the current canon seems to imply), and even they've thought about each other still this whole time i feel like it's kind of a hard thing to get over. at most i see them working best being in a very private relationship, unwilling to make much of a spectacle out of it or involving any more people than strictly necessary. they've both been in hiding for so long (Vlad literally, Alan figuratively) that that's simply what ends up being most comfortable.

also Alan is 100% gay homosexual and he and Vlad regularly have sex about it always. key to a healthy relationship.

I often revisit moments from TMFU because it is one of the main sources of my serotonin, and today I have largely rethought the scene in which Illya, disguised as an architect, talks about the Spanish Steps. He could make up literally any story, but what was he doing? Yes, he interprets his injuries and transfers them to his image.

In short, his version is: a man lived, he had a mother, part-time his muse, and he made this ladder in memory of her when she died. Usually the muses of young guys are girls, brides, wives or sisters. But he's muse is mother, which is terribly ironic, given Illya’s past and the fact that “his mother was very popular among his father’s friends.” Plus, his file says he has an Oedipus complex.

I had the distinct feeling that Illya had never had a girlfriend in over thirty years. I can’t be sure if he’s a virgin or not, but for all his Soviet gallantry, he definitely doesn’t know how to communicate with women — even at the first “official” meeting with Gaby, he didn’t greet her and didn’t introduce himself, just appearing behind her and putting before the fact: “You’re my fiancée, I’m your fiancé, this is not discussed.” It wasn’t real, but Gaby was shocked to see him. At the same time, Illya still has some idea of how the relationship between young people develops: every time a moment threatened to develop into a kiss occurred between him and Gaby, he expected it — he himself stretched forward, covered his eyes, prepared for a kiss and was upset when his expectations were not met or interrupted by someone. All this makes me think that the only and main woman in Illya’s life was his mother. Hence the Oedipus complex, and the violent reaction in a cafe in West Berlin, and the story on behalf of the architect, and the awkwardness in the treatment of girls. He just doesn’t know how to interact, doesn’t know where to start.
