Got Steph King’s newest book in the mail today! Celebrating getting my dmv shit cleared and my license! Can’t believe that next month I’ll be 31, 3 years sober, with my GED and license. Smh it wasn’t too long ago I couldn’t even get out of bed. It feels good to have my life back and my freedom!

Fairy Tale - Stephen King (Not Much A Fairy Tale)

Have you ever read a book and the descriptive writing turns you off. Especially for in this example, Stephen King writes about this bridge where Charlie's (Main Character) mom get's hit and killed on much early on in the book and every time Charlie mentions the bridge it is GODDAMN BRIDGE. Every time Stephen King brings it up it is always THAT GODDAMN BRIDGE. Ok King, we get the fucking point but don't have to put it into each sentence and at times, in a couple chapters, in the next couple of pages, 10x on each page. It is a real turn-off from reading and makes the reader lose connection with your story. It is poor story writing but sadly that never improved in this novel at all. 600 pages? Please, could have been done in 300. The extra 300 is a waste of paper in my opinion.

I found this novel, which many described to be one of the best of King yet, to be so slow that I literally put it down for a month and came back to it later and was still able to know what was happening. It is like a poorly written soap opera and its sad to say even those are written better. There is nothing keeping the reader hooked in this story until 400 pages in, when the story is finally reaching the climax, is when it starts to get really faced paced and good. As A King fan, I was truly disappointed in this book. Maybe my expectations were to high, I don't know, but truly I did find the writing to be atrocious and I had hoped it would get better but once I was 200 in, I came to the conclusion it never would.

The gladiator fighting in the novel truly intrigued me and that is when I found the story to really get going is when we finally meet the horrifying Night Soldiers, Living Dead Soldiers, and I loved that the twist is the brother of the royal family that was all presumed dead. That kind of surprised me. Leah, princess in this story, becoming Queen once she helps practically kill her brother to save her world, but not getting Charlie and Charlie not getting the girl, I truly loved.

The one other thing I truly did not like about this novel is that it felt completely plagiarized and lacked any originality. Story building also lacked. That truly made me sad for Stephen King. Hope his next book is better.

Stephen King's Fairy Tayle mini review (I suck at making reviews, sorry).

I mean, what should I say about Master King, brother. This book not only gives a twist to conventional fantasy and fairy tales that we all already know, but it also does so by making the reader feel identified with the thoughts and reflections of Charlie Reade. If there is one thing I should recommend, it is that you read this book not thinking of it as a story that revolves around fantasy, which is not the case. I feel that King uses fantasy not as a genre on which to base it, but as a resource with which to give rise and shape to his wonderful story.

It is true that the book takes its time to advance the plot, but those 200 pages of non-fantastic world build the relationship between Charlie, Radar and Mr Bowditch in a perfect and very endearing way. A relationship that later becomes very important in the climax of the book. If there is something I don't like about this book, it is the pace at which the end progressed, I felt it was somewhat rushed, and of course King makes a lot of mistakes in making his descriptions somewhat repetitive and heavy-to-read. But if there is something I LOVE about this book, it is how King mixes fantasy and fairy tales with touches of cosmic horror in pure Lovecraftian style. 4.5 stars overall.

Radar is goodest girl of all. What a wonderful dog.

Ok change of plans! My hold was ready for pickup so I grabbed this from the library today.

I’m not going to lie Fairy Tale by Stephen King had a slow start anyway. I have been reading fantasy for so many years so I just wasn’t vibing with a book about regular people. I will finish it next.

I am putting Fairy Tale down for now and starting on my E Eragon by Christopher Paolini.

Illustration from Stephen King’s “Fairytale” (art not mine). Up to Chapter 4, Charlie and Radar’s moments are so sweet!! Who knew it would take a scraggly old dog to bring a grumpy old man and a passing teenage boy together. It reminded me why I’m a dog person. Ironically I’m dog-sitting right now, as I read about Charlie dog-sitting Radar.

As always I love Stephen King’s writings. I loved this story and while it didn’t help this weird funk I’m in; it was a good immersive, atmospheric read.

The plot was good; if not fantasy-esque. I really enjoyed the plot and the characters. This one started out slow but it picked up around the first third mark.

This is a nice coming of age story of a young boy who ends up working for his grumpy, loner, elderly neighbour. Our MC ends up saving his neighbour’s life; and as a result he ends up volunteering to watch the neighbour’s elderly dog, Radar. Radar was a good girl and I loved the MASH reference. Some parts were slow and a bit lacklustre; but overall this book is a wild ride and a really good book that’s very solid.

Definitely recommend this book whether you’re an old Stephen King fan or a new one or haven’t read from him yet.

Finished Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey.

I loved this book! I will pick the series up after I finish this challenge. What a cool sci fi fantasy idea. Dragons that can jump through time.

Not to mention the dragon/rider bonding!

Lessa is such a moody, headstrong character and I love that by the end she is so close and in love with F’lar.

I’m glad this was my D. It was also a quick easy read which I needed after the American Gods and Cresent City.

I have Eragon on hold at the library so I have to skip to Fairy tale by Stephen King for now.
