I Want to be a Pirate
Jaune: *steps into Scumm bar before tripping and falling on his face*
Vernal: What be yer problem, boy?
Jaune: *scrambles upright* I want to be a pirate!
Raven: So what?
Vernal: Why bother us?
Qrow: Hey, don’t forget we’re short of help because of this whole “Salem” thing!
Vernal: So?
Qrow: So, no pirates means no swag! And no swag means no grog! And we’re getting dangerously low on grog…!
Raven: Hmm…do you have any special skills?
Jaune: I can hold my breath for ten minutes!
Vernal: …well…all right! But you don’t become a pirate just by asking! You have to go through…
Qrow/Raven/Vernal: The Three Trials!!
Jaune: Uh, what three trials are those?
Qrow: The Three Trials are a series of challenges that every pirate must face!
Raven: *brandishes Omen* You must master the sword!
Vernal: *sneakily pickpockets Raven* And the art of thievery!
Qrow: …and…
Qrow: …a Quest!
Vernal: …a what?
Qrow: Treasure hunting, you sea urchin!
Vernal: Oh, right! You must prove yourself in these three areas: swordplay, thievery, and…uh…treasure-huntery! And return with proof you’ve done it!
Raven: And then you must drink grog with us!
Qrow/Raven/Vernal: GROG!!! *all drink*
Jaune: …what’s in that “grog” stuff, anyway?
Vernal: Grog is a secret mixture, containing one or more of the following:
Qrow: …kerosene…
Raven: …rum…
Vernal: …artificial sweeteners…
Qrow: …red dye #2…
Raven: …battery acid…
Vernal: …scum…
Qrow: …propylene glycol…
Raven: …axle grease…
Vernal: …sulfuric acid…
Qrow: …acetone…
Raven: …and more pepperoni than you can probably imagine! It’s one of the most caustic, volatile substances known to man!
Qrow: The stuff eats right through these mugs, and the cook is losing a fortune replacing them!
Qrow/Raven/Vernal: *laugh uproariously*
Qrow: *falls off his chair unconscious*

get to know me ask game
Thanks for tagging me @colourme-feral!
RULES: bold the ones that are true & tag 10 people to do it.
APPEARANCE
blonde hair // I prefer loose clothing to tight clothing // I have one or more piercings // I have at least one tattoo // I have dyed or highlighted my hair // I have gotten plastic surgery // I have or had braces // I sunburn easily // I have freckles // I paint my nails // I typically wear makeup // I don’t often smile // I am pleased with how I look // I prefer Nike to Adidas // I wear baseball hats backwards
I started graying early (in my teens) so the hair dye is for when I want to change things up a bit. Braces are a rite of passage for so many, including me. I don't often smile, so people think I'm more serious than I actually am (also because of RBF). I'm satisfied with how I look because you've always got to love yourself first, and understand that nobody is perfect (so you shouldn't expect that of yourself either, whether in looks or any other department).
HOBBIES & TALENTS
I play a sport // I can play an instrument // I am artistic // I know more than one language // I have won a trophy in some sort of competition // I can cook or bake without a recipe // I know how to swim // I enjoy writing // I can do origami // I prefer movies to tv shows // I can execute a perfect somersault // I enjoy singing // I could survive in the wild on my own // I have read a new book series this year // I enjoy spending time with friends // I travel during work or school breaks // I can do a handstand
Can play piano but not well. I like art but don't indulge in it too much (except maybe writing). Grew up in a multilingual environment and that's made me love languages and linguistics. Trophies were mostly school stuff, nothing to write home about. I cook a lot, bake a bit less, but it's to get around food intolerances. Used to swim a lot. Writing is my first love. Origami and papercraft are fun. Prefer singing to piano (always have, and the background in music theory means I can appreciate some forms though I much prefer pop and R&B to classical). I used to travel a lot more, but do it less after the pandemic; traveling is less fun for me now and I prefer to voyage on the Internet instead.
RELATIONSHIP
I am in a relationship // I have been single for over a year // I have a crush // I have a best friend who I’ve known for ten years // my parents are together// I have dated my best friend // I am adopted // my crush has confessed to me // I have a long distance relationship // I am an only child // I give advice to my friends // I have made an online friend // I met up with someone I have met online
Spouse and I have been together a long, long time. Old friends are to be treasured. Crush confessions are so awkward when they're not reciprocal. I give advice (comes naturally as the eldest child) but it's not always welcome and I've had to learn to hold back. My online friends are those I've met through Tumblr, mostly around a shared love for Bad Buddy.
AESTHETICS
I have heard the ocean in a conch shell // I have watched the sun rise // I enjoy rainy days // I have slept under the stars // I meditate outside // the sound of chirping calms me // I enjoy the smell of the beach // I know what snow tastes like // I listen to music to fall asleep // I enjoy thunderstorms // I enjoy cloud watching // I have attended a bonfire // I pay close attention to colors // I find mystery in the ocean // I enjoy hiking on nature paths // autumn is my favorite season
Hasn't every child put a seashell to their ear? I did this so many times as a kid. Watched the sun rise at the seaside and in the mountains; most spectacular was at Gunung Bromo but marred by the sulfurous fumes biting the lungs. The quieter sounds of nature are generally calming so chirping counts. I love everything about the beach because we used to holiday there all the time in my childhood. Snow tastes of nothing; I remember sticking my tongue out to catch snowflakes in Iceland. A good thunderstorm is the perfect setting for a hot coffee, pastry and a good book by the window. There was always a bonfire at teen gatherings. I'm very visually-oriented and can't help noticing colors, but have learnt to focus the attention beam and not get distracted so sometimes I ignore them. Love everything about the sea and ocean, including their unknowns. Enjoy hikes and have done country/forest walks in different places but nothing too strenuous please, and I think the comfort meal after the walk is even better. What's not to love about autumn? The colors are gorgeous, lots of late summer fruit are amazing (mirabelle plums my favorite) and the whiff of smoke in the cooler evening air is so evocative of coziness.
MISCELLANEOUS
I can fall asleep in a moving vehicle // I am the mom friend // I live by a certain quote // I like the smell of sharpies // I am involved in extracurricular activities // I enjoy Mexican food // I can drive a stick shift // I believe in true love // I make up scenarios to fall asleep // I sing in the shower // I wish I lived in a video game // I have a canopy above my bed // I am multiracial // I am a redhead // I own at least 3 dogs
Memories of falling asleep on long bus rides to faraway destinations. Quote I live by: no regrets (it's pointless to stress out about a past you can't change; just learn from it and move forward). Mexican cuisine is not my all-time favorite but I like anything with chilli, so there are always dishes to enjoy, especially if there's cheese and avocado. I learnt to drive on a stick shift so that's not an issue but hardly drive nowadays (don't own a car and don't need one). I believe in true love, because I've found mine. I sing in the shower (and in the kitchen, in the living-room, everywhere I can at home).
Tagging (and I'm not gonna stop at 10):
@crzshaly437 @dimplesandfierceeyes @dudeyuri @ranchthoughts @teaofdesaster @miscellar @dribs-and-drabbles @recentadultburnout @bengiyo @waitmyturtles @twig-tea @airenyah @lurkingshan @22grt23 @faillen @pandasmagorica @anotherlovr @orchdxtea @badinthelatin @rythyme @lurkingteapot @vegasandhishedgehog
Also anyone and everyone who reads this (forgive me if I didn't tag you personally, didn't mean to forget anyone). Do play along and remember to tag me so I can get to know you better too! But no pressure if you don't wish to play either. 💖

Clothing of Skyrim, Part VII: Regional Styles Continued
Earlier today I attended a webinar for work which left me both intrigued and concerned. As a palate cleanser, I decided to continue working on my Clothing of Skyrim series and flesh out styles in the four holds I hadn't gotten to yet (the first five holds can be found here). This time we visit The Rift, Hjaalmarch, Eastmarch, and Winterhold!
The Rift
Riften is second only to Solitude in the volume of foreign trade that flows through the city. Its proximity to the borders of Morrowind and Cyrodiil influences styles in the region and helps support a flourishing cultural exchange. Large enclaves of Dunmer and Argonians live in the city, bringing with them their cultural and stylistic traditions. The temperate climate of The Rift allows for the wearing of clothing and textiles that would be impractical in other parts of Skyrim. Silks imported from (or, more frequently, smuggled out of) the Summerset Isles are a high-value commodity among Riften’s wealthy elite. Lining the interior of otherwise subtle garments with richly-dyed silk or satin is a favorite status symbol of bourgeois merchants living in the city. Block-printed Dunmeri designs remain popular as well. Foreign influences wane outside of Riften, where the clothing of farmers, trappers, and woodsmen more strongly resembles styles found in neighboring Falkreath and Eastmarch.
Hjaalmarch
Cold and damp are the defining characteristics of Hjaalmarch, and its inhabitants’ clothes reflect the need to survive in this harsh environment. Fulled or felted wool is worn for its warmth and water-resistant properties, and outerwear made from waxed or oiled cotton and flax is occasionally seen (though the materials are more often used as ships’ sails rather than in clothing). Since antiquity, the inhabitants of the sparsely-populated Karth River delta have passed down the skill of weaving grasses into textiles. Ornamentation on garments in this region tends to be less ornate than what is seen in neighboring Haafingar or Whiterun due to both a lack of wealth and the difficulty of trade in this inhospitable region. However, locals are known to add tassels made of yarn, string, or even grass as decoration, and decorative knotwork – a skill that originated in the fishing trade – livens the otherwise dour appearance of those living in and around the Drajkmyr Marsh.
Eastmarch
Fur and wool dominate the clothing produced in Skyrim's easternmost hold. Bear pelts are particularly prized and are often left partially intact to be worn as helms or cloaks, echoing the hold's heraldry. The Nordic preference for long hair, seen on both men and women, is particularly strong here. Elaborate braids and other designs are a common sight, with six and eight-stranded plaits being particularly popular. As a result, Windhelm is home to one of the highest concentrations of professional hairdressers in the empire. In the south of Eastmarch, those living in small villages around the region’s hot springs have recently established a lucrative dyeing industry. The springs’ abundant sulfur, when mixed with caustic soda and other compounds, produces colorfast black, gray, and rich brown cotton dyes that are difficult or nigh-impossible to replicate via other processes. The burgeoning trade in textiles has been an economic boon for these parts of the hold.
Winterhold
Hsaarik’s Head has the distinction of being the landing point for the Atmoran migration to Skyrim, and Winterhold has held to Atmoran traditions and ways of dress more than any other hold in the kingdom. Embroidery on leather is a defining feature of the style, and fur trim and linings are a near-necessity for surviving the long, cold winters. Owl and hawk designs, again drawing on Atmoran tradition, are a recurring motif. In the College of Winterhold, elaborately quilted robes help insulate the faculty and apprentices from the chill that seeps through the college’s walls. Novice’s robes are gray. After choosing an area of specialization in their third year, students begin wearing colorful robes which identify their chosen discipline. The faculty’s robes are distinct from the students’, with wider sleeves, liripipe hoods, and velvet trim.

I think it would be really cool of mojang to let us have stucco in minecraft. Gypsum is calcium, sulfur, hydrogen, and oxygen, so bone meal + gunpowder for powder, add to water for blocks?
I’d love for it to be a truer white version if white concrete, and maybe we could use dye to add a design to one of the sides? It would be a massive win for building, since we’d be able to have different patterns on each side or just. A very nice plain white

Zavlakya
Alright, today, you're getting THE MOST incoherent city-dump. Sorry. I could try to format this but like... energy. So this is just what I actually just wrote in my notes for New City November a few years back.
Here are the prompts:
Tumblr media
Day #3: Resources in this city?
-Lots of water-based plants and woods like Salt Palms, Mallow, Sacred Feathers, Cherimanus, Witch's Hours, Olives, Seaweed
-Sulfur & Hot Springs
-Salt from the ocean
-Peat moss & coal
-Seahens/seacocks, Solbirds, Monk seals, sardines, frogs, solbirds, deer, goats, squat lobster
-Gold, minor amounts of silver and copper, nickel, aluminum
-Somenium is a type of silk that flows down through waterfalls and rivers nearly year round--but most prominently during the warming of spring. Somenium is extremely durable, holds and protects dyes from the sun, and is also very lightweight. Due the structure of the fibers, catches and holds Ysse--the extremely cold particles that makes up my magic. Somenium is produced by a specific kind of caddisfly on the Upper Contient. But the Aftokratorian scientists have not confirmed this specifically. Seeresses and illuminators have woven somenium into as many things as possible for forever in this town...
Day #5 Architecture:
The traditional Svanihk styles are not generally as advanced as those in Telethens--the architectural height of the world--but since the growth of this city was largely guided by Yeulia, they stand out sharply from other structures built at the same time period (I imagine this city was founded... oh... 200ish years ago?). The rooftops are typically mildly conical--inspired by their yurt-based roots. Blue-toned glass windows are a newer addition--but due to the humidity, they are typically left open anyway except in the winter. While moss definitely overgrows the buildings and trees, the people make a point of cleaning it off at least once a year to maintain the stonework set by their precious Seeress.
Day #6 --Governance Historically
In Svanihk culture, Tsars and their Tsarinas have ruled the land. (Tsars and tsarinas are essential landed nobility but without the gender roles found in the traditional meaning--Tsars are the rulers, tsarinas are the relatives) However, under the new-ish laws of the Aftokratoria over the last 70-odd years, the Tsars have progressively lost power in favor of elected officials.
Today, the Tsars and Tsarinas in this city have say in government through monetary means and land-ownership. While some senators, particularly those in Telethens such as Senator Diacaius and ex-Senator Tarchus, are very pro-wealth redistribution, traditionalists and the Senate at large oppose the motion to simply "steal" wealth from the rich and give it to "random people for no reason".
The Seeresses of Telethens also have quite a bit of say over laws as well--seeing as they control large swaths of the airship supply in this city. If Yeulia ever arrives in town, her word becomes law unofficially.
And lastly, the head elected official is the Governor. The Governor is supposed to be in charge of enacting the people's will, and then will appoint everyone else they want in the government. They are reelected every year at the end of Spring--at the beginning of the safest travel season. There are no term limits. Their power is quite broad, as they can set taxes, laws, and such as they please within the city HOWEVER anything they do can be vetoed by the Senate or the Philosopher King or angry mobs. The Governor of this city in particular is known for being pretty in-line with the desires of the Senate and the local Tsar and Tsarina
Day #7--Most Famous Person
I already told you about the Seeress and the Stonemason (whom I'm officially naming Somenia and now the city's silk is named after Yeulia's lover). I have decided to name the city Zavlakya and the reigning Tsar family, Ivodra. But today, let me tell you about a more modern famous person: The elected Senate representative of Zavlakya is a Telethenian (pale skinned, pale haired) girl named Pythas.
Senator Pythas has basically formalized the theory of modern mathematics. Born to a rich shipwright family, Pythas was tutored alongside an Ivodra family Tsarina. Pythas was always very shy but very intelligent. Her tutor always encouraged her to speak up, and thus the Tsarina got very jealous of her. As such, she decided not-to go into Philosophy at first--despite that being her passion. While working a terrible gig with long hours as a secretary at the Tsarina's shipmaking company, she discovered the Pythasian Theorem at age 17. She told the Tsarina who published the work and claimed the discovery as her own.
Pythas allowed it but secretly published her own, superior book titled the Symphony of the Planets--in which she not only demonstrated the Pythasian Theorem more clearly but used it to explain the movement of the stars at age 19. The Tsarina was furious and bitter and fired her, so Pythas had no choice but to pursue her dream as a Philosopher--standing on streetcorners and tutoring those who would listen. She was wildly courted by every shipwright company in town, thirsty to sponsor her, and even the Seeresses were impressed.
Gaining confidence and with the help of the Tsar himself, she ran for Senate which she won at age 24--5 years junior to Senator Imedea, the second Senator of Zavlakya
Day #8: What do people value?
In the Svanihk culture generally, people value humanity, life, and education. Telethenians (those from the Isle of Telethens and generally the group with more representation in the government) tend to value rationality, truth, and the acquisition and application of knowledge. Both cultures work well together in the Aftokratoria.
In Zavlakya specifically, they value truth and creation. The value of these things is largely due to their reliance on and prosperity from ships and their sails. However, more than anywhere else in the Svanihk cities, this leads to an emphasis on acquisition of wealth and prosperity.
Like everywhere in the Aftokratoria, it's a meritocracy of sorts but there is definitely more "merit" to being a shipwright or someone who makes physical things and less value on more abstract arts. Even Philosophers have less social clout here than elsewhere because their work is more abstract--with the exception of Senators Pythas and Imedea.
Day #10 - Transportation
While airships exist, they are basically all used by the military and the government with almost none available to the general public. Normal ships and fishing boats, on the otherhand, are far more commonly available to civilians--though the military is also responsible for building roads and running the mail and other major engineering feats and don't necessarily just fight things. Roads are, of course, the necessary precursor to easy carriage transportation. They use horses to pull their carriages.
The Aftokratoria is a largely Communist nation with universal basic income determined by one's job sector and government coordinated transportation. So most of this stuff is free. It's not like civilians can never ride on or fly airships--sometimes they do but it's usually through luck or circumstance.
DAY #11 Imports & Exports
Primary Imports:
Grains
Lumber
Dyes
Medicinal things
Ores & Metal
Golems Primary
Exports:
Sails
Ships (Air and Sea)
Sailors
Day #12: Art
Known primarily for weaving Somenium silk, different weaves and patterns have different meanings based in Svanihk fortune telling tradition. Often, the seeresses weave their memories and visions of the future into the fabric--and help sailors who visit the city to do the same.
Also, they also sing a lot of sea shanties, have an opera based on organs, singing, and street organs, and are the first city to paint primarily on canvas instead of wood. The Aftokratoria invented realism as a painting method and they primarily use turpentine and safflower oil
Day #14--Professions
People in Zavlakya are known for being sailors and shipwrights and then all the sub-categories of things that go into that--particularly engineers, carpenters, and sailweavers. Zavlakya is also known for having an especially safe place for women--especially women who have been hurt by sailors or have lost husbands--amongst the Seeresses at their city Shrine.
Day #15 -- Wealth Distribution
There is not that great of a wealth gap between the rich and the poor--though it still exists. 70-odd years or so ago, the first Telethenian-style elections were held in Zavlakya and at this time, Communism/government-imposed minimum wage took hold. However, part of getting the Tsars to cooperate was allowing them to keep all their wealth. That being said, there are very few who are overlooked by the system--the government accounts for all citizens except in case of clerical errors or other extreme circumstances. Crime is incredibly low because why would you steal if you can more or less have whatever you need at any time? That being said, not every citizen has the opportunity to make lavish donations to the government or the Ecclesia or own several acres of orchards or convince artists to make art specifically for them... Only the rich do.
Senator Diacaius Praefori and many citizens in Telethens are pro-wealth redistribution for the Tsars but the Tsars are not so inclined
Day 16--Current Affairs
The biggest current issue in the Public Discourse in Zavlakya is the kind of power we want our leaders--elected and not--to hold. Should our Senators really dictate the transition of conquered peoples into our rule? Should our Seeresses and Illuminators dictate our values or should our Philosophers and forward thinkers? Should the Philosopher King be able to blow up entire cities with her ring finger? These are all questions being discussed with poor Svanihk and Telethenian people being pro-Philosophers and pro-not-blowing up things while rich Svanihk people tend to be pro-Seeresses and pro-Conqueroring people. That being said, they really love the Philosopher King here, just think maybe she shouldn't have nuked an island out of existence...
Day 17 Zavlakya's Outsiders
Due to the production-focus of the culture, they often are competitive with outsiders and proud when they outdo the other cities who aren't competing with them. They're kinda like New Yorkers who are like "Oh, you haven't seen NEW YORK busy". The kind of people who have side hustles to their side hustles. The government might dictate what kind of raise they get, but it's also a moral obligation to work hard.
Also, Zavlakihks aren't a fan of sporty, countryside towns with lots of horses--they consider horse racing to be the biggest waste of time. You know, unlike boat races. Those are great and perfect and useful
Day 18: Outsiders' Opinions of the City
(Idk if these aspects are cohesive cuz I just made em up but I like it so far)  Most outsiders of the city see Zavlakyihks (as I realized it would be because they're NOT A ROMANCE LANGUAGE) as overly obsessed with their work and, in plays and such, those with Zavlakyihk accents frequently take on the "neglectful parent/spouse" stereotype.  They being said, Zavlakyihk Seeresses are also fetished in the whole western half of the Aftokratoria for being beautiful ladies high in the mountains and who weave silks. Due to their history as a women's shelter, these women are known for being especially chaste and uninterested in men. To win one's trust is a sign of incredible nobility. That being said, a majority of the Seeresses in Zavlakya are VERY VERY gay just because of the legends in the city. There's a general expectation in the city that young people will meet their SO and then do incredibly productive things together as a power couple. This Zavlakyihk Romance has also become a trope in Western art.
Day 19: What's currently threatening the city?
There's also an election in Spring in which the Tsar is running against both Imedea and Pythas. They are expected to win, but it would be a hit against the democracy of the Aftokratoria to have the  Svanihk elite win instead...
Day 20: Languages
In Zavlakya, they speak Svanihk and Telethenian.
Davyevi, minihk ken Belle ziri. Svan kevos'hi ziri.
Day 21: A Shop
Filia and Syeva's workshop is higher on the mountain, at the edge of the lake. The vaulted space is filled with elegant looms and more elegant voices. Filia sings and you can hear her high, sweet voice even down at the waterway below. Her singing is timed to the churning of machines and to the boiling pots of safflower, pomegranate, and mallowblooms. Syeva weaves and grinds. Filia pans for somenium and spins. Together, the Seeresses turn their creations into great sails and wings stretched across those thin, strong frames.
Belle's Note: I don't remember this at all lololol
Day 24: The City's Heart
Zavlakya is a city for the beautiful and the practical. The fast paced bustle is the Gem of the West, a haven of religion and industry. From the shipwrights and the trade port in the harbor to the weavers and spinners at the mountain lakes, water flows through the heart of Zavlakya. And the rising middle class here make the most of every drop. That is the essence of what Zavlakya is about

Ice dyeing is a fun way to create colorful patterns on fiber using natural color. Freezing fresh or exhaust dyes into ice cubes welcomes a diffused watercolor palette. Adding a layer of dried dye flowers to the frozen mix will invite punches of vivid hues on top. The combination is a lovely way to create tie dye effects to your favorite textiles. Plus, with the help of some common household products, colors can be shifted to expand the rainbow of hues. This tutorial will show you how to ice dye with frozen exhaust dyes & dried flowers, shift color with pH modifiers as well as the resulting effect on cotton.

FFXIVWrite 2023 Day 7: Noisome
Day 7! In which the WoL visits a place she abandoned long ago...
Enjoy!
Rating: Gen No CWs apply!
“Oh gods,” Horskfyr lets out a grunt, “this smell…”
Freyalin laughs and nods her head as she wipes sweat from her brow, “smells like home,” she muses.
In truth, she had forgotten how…the pungent smell of magma is. Sulfur and just hot heat so in your face it can easily make the eyes water. Thankfully for her however she's formed a good poker face over the years of living by it so she can look cool in front of her baby brother. A thing she finds herself caring about, for whatever reason.
They're almost to their destination and she feels her stomach turn. She hasn't been back here in almost twenty years. She knows it's likely most of the ones here before are no longer. Nomadic creatures, the Hellsguard were, some move on from voidgate to voidgate. Others just grow tired of where they are and set out to find a change of scenery.
A strobe of anger passes through her briefly. Most take their kids with them she thinks.
It certainly wasn't the time to dwell on that now, though, and so she takes a deep breath, choking a little on the putrid air she takes in.
Horskfyr walked ahead and now waits for her at the cave entrance. He looks unbearably nervous and she puts a hand on his face, tapping it lightly. “C’mon, you've been here before,” she says.
“Yeah but that wasn't. I didn't know what it really meant to be here. You…we could’ve spent more time here. Together and we-”
“Didn't get that chance. For reasons out of our control,” she cuts him off.
He opens his mouth to try and say something else but he then closes it giving her wrist a squeeze and a nod, “you're right,” he mutters.
“Always am,” she exclaims as she backs away from him and towards the inside.
Her heart stops a beat when she sees inside. It's all the same. None of the tables or beds have moved in her two decades away. There's also a lot less people. She closes her eyes and does a trick she learned all those years ago. There's no sense of the voidgate. It must've gotten closed by someone…someone able to actually do it.
She walks towards a familiar spot and lets out a surprised yell to see the old woman still there. Sitting cross cross on the floor, mixing herbs and dyes.
The old woman stops her mixing and looks up, her eyes are glossy and a little unfocused. She smiles, “Sharp Willow,” she says aloud. Freyalin goes still, heat rises in her body, and it's not from the climate. “It has been quite some time, my dear.”
Tears instantly prick her eyes as she walks forward and joins the other woman on the ground. Horskfyr hovers nearby, trying to not act like he's paying attention. “Hello Frail I…it's been some time hasn't it,” she says.
Frail Oleander, the callous and revered old woman that all but raised her when her parents left her here. She’d spent many a morning under this exact tent, helping her tend to her potions, until she was but fourteen and in charge of her own squadron. Too young and too reckless, but Frail always knew the right words to say to reel her in when she needed it. She'd never thought she’d see her again, and yet here they are.
“You outgrew this place long ago,” Frail says. Freyalin looks down at her hands and guilt washes over her. “But this new life suits you, Warrior of Light.”
Her head snaps up, “How did you…” there's no point in finishing that question. She learned early on that her elder had many ways to communicate without needing to leave the cavern.
Frail gives a knowing smile. She then focuses behind Freyalin, “and you, Horskfyr. Lovely to see you again. I see you found what you were looking for.
Horskfyr clears his throat and nervously steps forward. His tall, broad frame engulfs them both as he stands near. “Y-yes ma’am I- thank you.”
She smiles, “There's no need to thank me,” she says, “I thank you for returning her to me. Even if just for a moment,” she says. She reaches a hand out and Freyalin takes it. It's cold and brittle and a stark contrast to the smoldering heat they sit in.
There's moments of silence between them as the two women sit there in each other's company. Eventually Horskfyr sits to join them. They spend the day back into old routines and the paranoia in the back of her head melts away. For the most part.
For the first time in her life, this place truly feels like home and a ball of emotion settles in her throat as she says her goodbye to it again the next morning.
Frail Oleander smiles at her and gives a weak hug. “Be well, Sharp Willow,” she says.
She nods her head and gives a small smile, “You too,” she replies.
As they walk further and further away, smell dissipating, she knows that was the last time she’ll see the closest thing she ever had to a mother and she tries to make her peace with it.
“Hey,” Horskfyr says, grabbing her hand and squeezing it gently, “You okay?”
Freyalin smiles and gives a light squeeze, “I…I am. Thank you,” she says. It's genuine. “It's just…a lot of memories in that place.”
He nods and gives a small smile. “So!” he claps his hands together, “next stop…The Doman Enclave?” his eyebrows wiggle and she rolls her eyes.
“Only if you promise to be nice,” she replies.
He feigns hurt, “I don't know what you mean, I’m a gentleman.”
“Yeah, from Sharlayan. That's not saying much.”
They continue to bicker as they get away from the desert and settle back into U’ldah, stopping by her apartment for a spell before they continue on their way. There's a lightness in her chest that she hasn't felt in a while.

Sulfur lime dipping kittens is just. such a thing
The vets, techs, and assistants don’t enjoy it, the cats don’t enjoy it
You pick up the kitten and you’re just like “you have the bad skin fungus so now you go into the smelly bath that dyes you yellow” and then you’ve got yellow cats who are less than happy at your presence
And also you cannot under any circumstances touch someone until you have fully disinfected
Gotta love animal medicine

The best part of being a redhead was on dye day, rinsing the dye off and pretending it was the blood of my enemies. But now, backing down again from the dark, my head has a lingering scent of demonic sulfur, and frankly, it's not great but I'm not not into it, you know?

☆The symbol on their back is the alchemical symbol for black sulfur. Which is ironically used to make black dye, similar to the black used on the symbol. I just found it funny because they're a black rat.
☆The stars in his pattern are a small hint that he is named after the morning star (Venus), which is also called Lucifer. This infirmation is rarely known though, as people mainly link Lucifer or Morning Star to religion. This is the Japanese spelling of Lucifer though. Either way, personality, I like the name so I'm not letting a book stop me from using it xD
☆This guy was originally going to replace Cocoa as my main sona, but due to recent events, Cocoa is the main again, making Rushi the secondary sona now.

this is vermilion pigment, which is made of ground cinnabar ore. it was such a bright red that it may or may not have changed the course of art pigments as a whole, and both ancient and medieval artists loved it. i did a write up for class about it which i'm going to stick under the read more in case you're interested because, as my friend put it, tumblr loves weirdly specific information:
Vermilion is a brilliant, warm red pigment extensively used in ancient times through the 20th century. Especially coveted during the time of the Romans, the word derives from the Latin word vermes. This root refers to the scale insect kermes found on oak trees that, when dried and crushed, produced a rich red dye now known as crimson. True vermilion, however, comes from a very different source: cinnabar, the most common source ore of oxidized mercury (named for the Roman god of war: Mars). This toxic mineral forms in crusts and veins near volcanic activity and hot springs. The first documented use of vermilion predates even the Romans; evidence of ground cinnabar dating back to 8000-7000 BCE  has been discovered in the neolithic village Catalhoyuk in modern day Turkey. Vitruvius describes cinnabar’s appearance in book 7 of his series The Ten Books on Architecture: “First, before getting to the vermilion itself by methods of treatment, they dig out what is called the clod, an ore like iron, but rather of a reddish colour and covered with a red dust.” This ore (pictured below) only needed to be finely ground to create a brilliant red pigment.
Tumblr media
The Romans adored this pigment despite its scarcity and price. According to Pliny in Natural Histories, the best cinnabar was sourced from the Almaden mine in Sisapu. He wrote also that the best mines were property of the state, and “nothing is more carefully guarded. It is forbidden to break up or refine the cinnabar on the spot. They send it to Rome in its natural condition, under seal, to the extent of some ten thousand pounds a year. The sales price is fixed by law to keep it from becoming impossibly expensive, and the price is fixed to seventy sesterces a pound.” This price (10 times that of red ochre) was for the highest quality of vermilion (which was usually liver-colored) and the only truly vibrant red known to the ancients.
Powdered vermilion was used in a variety of ways during ancient times. Many frescoes uncovered in Pompeii feature vibrant red made from vermilion, despite its price. It was known as the most expensive pigment used by the Romans for wall painting. Numerous walls from the Villa dei Misteri (Villa of Mysteries) are painted with vermilion (pictured below), and a jar of powdered pigment was excavated in the shop below the villa. It had its uses beyond decorations, too: Pliny wrote that worshipers ritualistically applied it to their bodies and on the faces of statues of Jupiter (Zeus) during holidays and festivals, as vermilion carried great importance and sacred associations. Outside of Rome, the pigment would be applied to skulls and other bones as part of burial rituals in neolithic cultures in Anatolia, China, Galilee (Judaea), Spain, and Syria, and some ancient Native American cultures. It was also used in jewelry-making during the Iron Age by Iberian cultures, and the Achaemenid (Persian) Empire used the paint as a bedding for gemstones to enhance the red vibrancy of translucent carnelian stone inlays.
Tumblr media
As time passed, the need for larger and finer quantities of vermilion increased, and alternative methods of creating the red pigment arose. It is unknown who discovered how to make mercury from cinnabar via removing the sulfur and vice versa to create vermilion, although it was likely done by an alchemist trying to produce gold (which ancient alchemists believed to be red-based and thus linked to this pigment). The Greek alchemist Zosimus of Panopolis in Southern Egypt insinuated that he had a secret recipe for artificial vermilion sometime around 300 CE, but the first description was found in Compositiones ad Tigenda (Recipes for Coloring), a Latin manuscript from the 8th century. Some of the manuscript is in Greek, so it is possible that the scribe copied it from a Hellenistic dictation, therefore indicating that the manufacture of vermilion had been known beforehand. By the 12th century, there was a clear recipe and process outlined by the Benedictine monk Theophilus, who wrote down what would become known as dry method vermilion.
To create the pigment, one needed to combine mercury and sulfur, then heat the two together. When simply mixed, the two elements create a black mercury sulfide known as aethiops mineralis. However, upon heating at the proper temperature, the mixture vaporizes and re-condenses in the top of the flask in which it was combined. Upon breaking the jar, the black mixture could be collected and then ground down. The powder then turns red as the color develops, becoming brighter and brighter as it is pulverized. This process was a source of great interest to medieval alchemists, as a transformation and combination of mercury and sulfur, and a possible gateway to gold. Mercury’s appearance and chemical behavior were the basis of a large section of alchemical theory and practice, and it and sulfur were seen as the parents of all metals. To combine the two into a likeness of cinnabar was greatly respected and devoutly practiced. However, this method could be incredibly dangerous if not done carefully, as the mercury fumes from improperly sealed vessels was extremely poisonous. In an effort to prevent harm, the Venice government banned this practice in 1294.
Undeterred by the danger, medieval artists greatly favored this pigment and used it excessively. Vermilion was used alongside gold leaf and ultramarine for manuscript capitals and on tempera panels. The pigment would be mixed with egg yolk to product a brilliant red paint that ranged from an orange toned scarlet or a violet hue with high intensity and pigment quality. In the 14th and 15th centuries, vermilion that had been tempered and become dingy would sometimes be mixed with saffron or walnut bark to produce a warmer tone. The paint was normally paired with vivid blues, greens, and yellows, as medieval artists believed it should be used alongside other beautiful and precious colors. Vermilion’s importance in art history cannot be understated: without it, it is likely that the middle ages would not have developed the high standards of coloring upheld in their works, and would have had less use for other bold colors invented after the 12th century.
However, this pigment had one fatal flaw: it inexplicably and unpredictably turned black. This process did not occur due to chemical changes or by direct sunlight, but rather a rearrangement in the structure of the mercury sulfide. The causes for this change are still not fully understood, but it seems to be less likely to occur in tempera or oil paintings under reasonable conditions, but seemed to affect lime paintings enough that it was not recommended for wall painting. Small amounts of blackening have been observed in some medieval manuscripts, but it is unknown if that was due to the vermilion or because of what it was mixed with, like white or orange lead. Luckily, most medieval paintings have survived and still shine a bright red today.

This pigment became less common after oil paint became the art medium of choice in the 15th century onwards, as the pigment presented as quite transparent in an oil base and other vibrant red pigments became available. It still had its uses, however: it was used as a glazing layer for oils and continued to be widely utilized in tempera and lacquer work. Da Vinci used vermilion in another application: as a grounding layer for his paintings.
Despite its translucence in oil, vermilion was still the most vibrant red and retained its popularity enough that alchemists still experimented with other methods of synthesis. A new technique for the manufacture of vermilion was discovered in 1687 by German chemist Gottfried Schulz, who created the Dutch method or wet method. In this process, mercury and melted sulfur were mashed together to create black mercury sulfide, then heated in a distiller to produce vapors that condensed into bright red crystals. The sulfur was then removed by treated the crystals with a strong alkali, then washed and ground under water to yield pigment powder. This process is still used today.
Cost and toxicity notwithstanding, vermilion still held the position of the primary red pigment used by European painters from the Renaissance through the 20th century, when it was almost entirely replaced by cadmium red. Today, genuine vermilion pigment is mainly manufactured in China, where it is still widely used in lacquerware and other art.
