✨   Bill The Pony ✨   Painted for Magic: The Gathering - Tales of Middle Earth AD: Colin Boyer  FINALLY! After two long years I can show Bill, the first MtG card I have ever painted.  It's special to me because of that, but also because it's related to Lotr!  Edit: Sorry, had to delete the sketches. Middle Eearth Enterprises doesn’t allow us to show any progress steps.

So I'm not into MTG but I do like collecting things so I bought a few booster packs a while ago just to check out the art. Finally got around to opening them and promptly FREAKED OUT because LOOOK they did Eldritch Elrond!

Magic the Gathering - The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth
Character cards (1)
One of the specificity of this set adaptation (which is actually a typical thing of modern MtG set) is that for several of the main characters (well, a LOT of them), the set doesn't just offer one card - but several, each one representing a different aspect or evolution of the character throughout the books.
Here above for example, you have the cards of Aragorn, Arwen, the Balrog, Elrond, Eomer, Eowyn (sorry I do not include the accents), Faramir, Frodo, Galadriel, Gandalf and Gimli. PS: If you are wondering why there are two "Gandalf the White" cards, it is because one of the two is a promotional variant. Something similar happened with "Saruman of the Many Colors".)

Forge Anew
Tumblr media
Forge Anew   2W
Enchantment
When Forge Anew enters the battlefield, return target Equipment card from your graveyard to the battlefield.
As long as it’s your turn, you may activate equip abilities any time you could cast an instant.
You may pay 0 rather than pay the equip cost of the first equip ability you activate during each of your turns.
Equipment decks are gunning for cards like this, and Tales of Middle Earth delivered. While the “your turn” clause is limiting, equipment decks are typically trying to attack in anyway, so these kinds of effects are most useful during your turn. Additionally, while it’s no Sigarda’s Aid, being able to move equipment around for free is especially good with the high-costing equip costs like Kaldra Compleat and Colossus Hammer.
For that matter, it works similarly to Sigarda’s Aid, just with the added addition that your opponent basically will always know what’s coming. If you attack into an opponent with more creatures than they have blockers, then you can just move one of your equipment to an unblocked creature before damage happens. Hopefully, your opponent can’t do anything about it, and you can get in for a nice chunk of damage no matter how your opponent blocks.
Being able to pull equipment from the graveyard is also a nice addition. The RW variants of the deck especially give access to plenty of looting cards to discard your more costly equipment into the grave to get back later with Forge Anew’s ETB ability. Overall, this card is great. 2W might be a bit costly for some people and the specification of it only being on your turn might turn off even more people, but in my opinion it’s a solid inclusion in any equipment deck.

I didn't take a pic of my deck before taking it apart, but I wanted to share my Tales of Middle Earth prerelease experience
I played UR and just barely squeaked into the top 8 with a 3-2 record. We decided to split the prize pool, so I went home with 7 set boosters
My deck was a lot of fun. Playing UR was ironic, because it was the one color combo that I had no idea of what to do. I started off trying to play spellslingers, using Gandalf the Gray and all these effects to play cards at instant speed (such as Bourne on a Wind and Gandalf, Friend to the Shire). However, I ended up cutting Gandalf, FotS in favor of more The Ring Tempts You cards, because my two Bilbo, Retired Burglars put in a lot of work.
Also, funny enough, I cast Gandalf the Gray 4 times in my 5 rounds, but only in 1 game did I manage to trigger his abilities at all. Most of those times I had the game on lock down already, and Gandalf was just extra insurance that I would close out the game
However, in my final round, I did manage to use Gandalf to copy a Quarrel's End, which was sweet.
Another highlight of my deck was Display of Power. I really only put it to good use in my first 2 rounds, but copying my opponents removal spells was quite impactful
This set is so much fun, and I can't for a chance to play my Riders of Rohan commander precon

Tales Starter Project: An Overview (Part 2)
So to start with: This is pretty cool. I’m pretty dreadful when it comes to self promo, and realistically my target audience of people nostalgic for decades old introductory products are most likely to stumble upon a post of mine from a random google search or something. But even though I’m not using reddit all that much any more I happened across a number of posts in the last couple of days…
