It's Disability Book Week, and I wanted to bring to your attention to one of my favorite trail guides, The Disabled Hiker's Guide to Western Washington and Oregon! While I am not currently disabled, I likely will be as I age, and most of us will end up disabled at some point in our lives whether due to health, age, or circumstance. Also, as a tour guide taking people out onto trails, it's really important for me to remember that not everyone has the same physical capabilities that I take for granted, so I need to take everyone's abilities and limitations into account when planning a tour.
This, then, is an excellent resource, whether you're currently disabled or not. Syren Nagakyrie has written a thorough guide to several dozen trails throughout western Washington and Oregon. Each entry has an exceptionally detailed description of what to expect along the way, as well as important information like whether there's cell phone reception, are dogs allowed, what the trail surface is like, etc. There's also a spoon rating, which gives disabled folks a heads-up as to what challenges may face someone using mobility aids, dealing with chronic illness, etc. And it's a great ways for those of us who are not disabled to understand that what may be an "easy" trail for us isn't necessarily going to be "easy" for many disabled people.
You can get the book directly from the author at https://www.disabledhikers.com/2020/03/19/the-disabled-hikers-guidebook or pick it up from your local indie bookstore!

Beyond surface appeal, what makes Ganon a compelling antagonist
I think cruising my blog would provide a good number of possible answers, but I guess my tl:dr would be (otherwise I could probably make a full 24h conference about it at this point): because he does reveal (if one is willing to look) the brutality of a world in which gods uphold a natural order through a given kingdom that will not budge on its god-given right to rule, and him as both a rebellious disorder to that status quo which also ends up devoured by said status quo as just one natural part of a cycle of creation and destruction that ultimately always kind of stays the same.
Also, I find the setup of a man born to a tribe of outcast women, considered exceptional by birth while also having to figure himself out + the role he needs to play in that kind of structure and in a very difficult context, someone who both is being granted a lot of natural power while also still being sneered at and considered lesser and/or inherently evil by those blessed by the gods (while also carrying a lot of unexamined baggage of their own), is just so juicy and interesting and brimming with potential psychologically speaking (especially when applied to his motivations of: why does he want power, why does he always alter his own body, his uncanny resilience, etc). It does come with a lot of baggage, as "the evil man from the desert" is far from being a neutral concept coming from a neutral historical place --but examining what kind of world would come to such conclusions is also deeply revealing of said world.
And then, Wind Waker gives him even more of a window to reflect on his own rage while also never apologizing for the horrors he commited, mourning what he wanted and what he became while also being the only one calling the gods of Hyrule out for being terrifyingly cold entities --far more than he could ever hope to become.
Yeah, I think Nintendo has been sleeping on Ganondorf ever since (even if I defend his TP appearance). But he has a fascinating cross-game story(ies), and I find him to be a deeply tragic --if horrendously flawed-- figure, which is partially why TotK was so disappointing to me, because TotK saw nothing but the surface level + the fact that putting him in a game sells and makes people horny.
(you'll notice I didn't mention Demise, because I think that, while the whole cycle thing wasn't bad or not that interesting, fans really overly simplify this concept in a way that has contributed to make Ganondorf extremely flat, which I am not here for.)

Beginner Hiking Guide Part One: Find Where You Want to Hike
Access to wilderness and trail systems varies a lot depending on where you live. And while there are trails and places to walk all across the country, knowing where to go and look for them when you’re new to hiking can be tricky. So here’s some tips for getting started! (Note: this guide will be US-centric, since that’s where I live and hike)
Places to Hike:
National Parks If you already live near a national park, you live near Hiking Nirvana and we’re all jealous of you. Congrats! If you’re traveling to a National Park, check out the park’s website with the National Park Service and research the trails to find one whose length and challenge level is a good fit for your ability and comfort.
State Parks There are a lot of State Parks throughout the US with well-maintained trail systems. Check out your state’s Parks Department and see if there are parks, preserves, or trails near you!
Conservation Trusts These are nonprofit organizations that acquire and steward land for the purposes of conservation. That aren't state-run, but a lot of them have wonderful volunteer-maintained trail systems. See if there are any conservation trusts in your area, and if they have maps of trail systems online!
National Forests Oddly enough, National Forests aren’t actually parks, as the Forest Service is part of the Department of Agriculture and not the National Parks Service. So while there’s big swathes of National Forest out there with a lot of great trails, maintaining them for visitors isn’t the Forest Service’s priority, so you might need to use other trail finding tools rather than their websites. That said, there are a lot of awesome Forest Service volunteers out there doing great work!
Town Forests There may be areas of state-owned or town-owned forest near you! Look online, check out your town’s (or neighboring town’s) website, or ask around -- there may be some nice woodland walking trails if you live in an area that isn’t highly urbanized. Your local library is a great resource for information on the local area.
Where to Find Trail Information:
It can be tempting, if there’s a park with hiking trails nearby, to give in to the temptation of impulsive wanderlust by just driving out, picking a trail, and setting out to explore.
Please do not do this.
I get it, I have lousy impulse control and love the romance of simply walking off into the woods too! But the romance wears off quickly once you realize you’re lost and it’s getting dark, or that you’re in way over your head on a trail that seems to have something against you personally and is determined to break your ankles. Take some time to look up info on a trail ahead of your hike so you know what to expect in terms of length and difficulty (and can pack appropriately), and get a map so you know where you’re going and how to get back. There’s a lot of resources for finding trail information out there!
Parks / Conservation Trust / Town Forest Websites As mentioned above, most of these national, state, municipal or nonprofit orgs will have their own websites, and will often have detailed trail maps you can view or download!
Guidebooks & Published Maps You’d be surprised how many published hiking trail guides (many with included maps) there are out there! Look up hiking guides for your state or region, and see what books come up. Ask around at your local library, or locally-owned book stores! You’ll want to check to see what the most recent edition is to make sure any copy you find isn’t a few decades out of date (trails change), but printed trail guides tend to be reviewed more rigorously than a lot of online resources, and contain more detailed information on terrain, difficulty, etc.
AllTrails AllTrails is a useful starting point for finding hikes and popular trails near you! That said, I emphatically do not recommend relying exclusively on AllTrails for trail info. It can be a great tool to look up hikes in your area and their general length and elevation gain (the difficulty ranking system on AllTrails is nonsensical though -- ‘Moderate’ can mean anything from ‘it isn’t paved’ to ‘not a sheer vertical rock face’). The comments section can also be useful for recent reports of trail conditions. But it crowd-sources information and some people are dinguses and will upload their crazy bushwhacking or simply provide inaccurate data, and the app isn’t great about indicating what blazes to follow when you’re on interconnecting trail systems, so you can get a lot of inaccurate or incomplete information on there that can get you lost. I highly recommend that you always verify trail maps and data you get from AllTrails with other sources, especially as you get further into backcountry!
Other Hiking Apps to check out:
FarOut (formerly Guthooks)
GaiaGPS
Hiking Project
(Safety Tip: If you’re going to be anywhere remote and you’re using virtual sources, Print Your Maps. Many apps only work in their free version if you have internet service, and may not function once out in the wilderness. Even if you screenshot things and have them saved offline, your phone battery may die or your phone might get wet and decide not to work. Have an analog backup in a ziploc bag to keep it dry!)

So I'm going to see Shrek the Musical on Friday which is exciting for a multitude of reasons. 1. It's one of my favorite musicals ever and I've never seen it live and 2. One of the kids I grew up doing theater with is playing Shrek. On the national tour!! Which is insane to me tbh!! It's crazy when I hear news of someone I knew as a kid becoming a Broadway star lol

oh you know i just realized why I thought Exorcistic: The Unofficial Rock Musical feels incomplete. A lot of comedy musicals, despite the riffing and or parodying, at some point drop the act and do something sincere ("Not Your Seed" from The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals, the romantic subplot in Peter Pan Goes Wrong, "When The World's at Stake" from The Trail To Oregon, "To Thine Own Self (reprise)" from Something Rotten!, "Amanda's Song" from Saw The Musical).
it never does that, which i guess is fine, but feels incomplete to me since there's usually a moment where the laughs stop and you get a breather. Like that love scene in The Velocipastor. That one's not a musical, but you get it

Easy hike at a trail I used to do with Hank all the time. Hallow did it a couple times as a puppy. It’s an off leash trail close to the city so it’s typically busy- hallow hasn’t been there in years. Wasn’t too busy today and she had a great time.

i like this style i used for blood4blood i think i want to make these little icon portraits for my halloween game too..
Tumblr media Tumblr media
potential player characters 🤔
i wanted to do something similar to birdland & i also liked the portraits in my brother the parasite, where the character portraits appear alongside the text, but i wasn't really sure how to do that, and while searching around i actually ended up liking the look of chapel's speechboxes better... not sure i would use them again for this, or actually try to do what i wanted to originally.
there will be at least 4 (maybe 5, i haven't decided yet) player characters, i think it would be cool to have a screen with all their portraits and maybe even a selection screen at the start and on the menu... that might be too ambitious, my original plan is just assigning a chapter to each girl, but if i could pull off big branches by letting the player choose who to start with that could be fun... 🤔 and if you get them killed, they get blacked out on the menu screen.

roundup while i remember it:
sparta is getting better with river and stream crossings after her little dip last year, and from having to carry her across a (wide!) bridge on Thursday, to her doubting and having 2nd and 3rd thoughts but ultimately crossing a *bunch* of them today, she's really getting her confidence back. she's still cautious re: crossing water (as she always has been) which i honestly appreciate, but it's nice to see her get over this particular thing.
troja did amazing picking and following the trail today! she's never done that seriously enough for me to rely on, but tonight she went ahead a couple of times and once even picked a better route than sparty did (heresy, i know.) these are skills i value, because of hikes like these ones where we didn't get back until 2am and for almost two hours i trusted my dogs fully, because it was too dark to really see the path.
for that last bit it is also helpful to have a light colour dog because sparty? love her. adore her. can not fucking see her.
