so recently i’ve been brainrotting over @yoshiintheweb ‘s Wonders of The Hills AU and you know me, i'm a big Smallishbeans fan so here comes my little theory about woth!joel mainly prompted by this tag:

so, woth!joel was cursed at some point in his life and since then he has thrown off/outlasted the curse (or that’s what i’ve been getting from the wording); what we know tho is that there are some leftovers from the curse, namely golden eyes 

the spotify playlist made for joel definitely fucks, the songs are amazing but there are some specific ones that got my attention

some are just funny

and some might actually either be or contain the clues

it’s no secret that in life series joel is very heavily associated with wolves, and in a different way than Ren is (with it being pretty much canon that Ren is a werewolf/wolf hybrid of some sort) but I genuinely do not think that woth!joel is a werewolf considering the emphasis on him being just some guy

but both the association and the songs lead us to the wolf and curse themes so if he’s not a werewolf what could it be?

well, i think that Joel got himself into some stupid shit and was straight up cursed to become a wolf

i'm not sure if it was in a werewolf-esque style where he became a wolf on full moon or each night, or just straight up becoming a wolf and being stuck this way until the curse was lifted/thrown off 

i think ‘modern day cain’ might mean that he killed his brother? or he killed somebody else’s brother and as punishment he was cursed or maybe that song is there just bc its a bop

how was the curse lifted if Joel is just a guy (in the form of a wolf)? why, by lizzie of course 

maybe he met her as a wolf and she realized he was cursed and decided to overcome the curse? maybe the power of love did it? maybe a kiss? who knows 

also geraldine was part of joel’s pack and decided to stay with him after he was changed back and they’re besties your honor

i think this is all compatible with what yoshi posted about the AU and i also know she loves wolves so maybe?

so yeah, if you’re asking me joel just straight up lived as a wolf in the forest for some time and then decided to open up a store (as one does),

he has leftovers of his wolf instincts, he’s kinda wild and growls at rude customers

i may have gone a bit overboard but let me know what you think jfskjhfkj

Thinking about Taylor saying in her speeches on tour about how she kept putting out albums during the pandemic years to feel a connection with fans and how comforting it was to know that once people heard her song she no longer felt alone in her feelings...

And then thinking about how she's been sitting on the subject matter (if not possible content) of TTPD for two years and knowing in hindsight about how much she was actually going through, and what she chose to share and what she very much chose to keep to herself (cough YLM), and how that probably contributed even further to her feelings of isolation... 😵‍💫

I want to talk about ace Eddie so I’m going to talk about ace Eddie! this episode was absolutely delicious and I know many many people will tell me that I’m reading too much into this and it is simply what the show said: his catholic guilt. Which is compelling enough already but stick with me.

ace Eddie is so so near and dear to my heart and I enjoy analyzing his arcs and his relationships through that lens. The fact that ABC allows characters to have these candid conversations is !!!

this episode in particular is delicious in terms of ace Eddie (I’m sorry, I’m not wording this wonderfully, it’s been a very bad pain day). He initially says to Buck:

“I got here early to avoid not having sex” and yes, the reason he gives is his catholic guilt. But I also just want to pay attention to the way he was speaking about it after revealing to Buck that he was avoiding being home. He was purposefully using vague, almost immature (in the sense of the way younger people take about sex) language and justifying himself by saying that Christopher was away, so they had time to themselves so naturally… it felt very much like this was how he was supposed to be feeling and what he was supposed to doing because his son was away because they had free time, the natural conclusion to him was that they would have sex.

he also says “Marisol likes to have it in the morning” which, granted, could simply indicate that he prefers it at other times but if we look at it through the perspective of ace!Eddie indicates that they have sex when Marisol wants to rather than when Eddie wants to (if he ever broaches the subject at all). This also lines up with the way he spoke about having sex with Shannon which primarily centered around her desires and his ability to fulfill them rather than his own wants and needs. The discussion with Bobby only further solidified this. He suggests that this is simply Eddie’s reaction to moving too quickly, indicating that there was very little that he had heard about Marisol prior to her moving in. Now, and again I recognize I may be reading too much into it, but for me the way they framed Marisol moving in by opening with them having sex, it reinforces this idea that for Eddie, sex is easy and expected and there’s a natural progression of a relationship that he’s meant to follow (mentioned in his conversation with Bobby). He’s meant to have sex, enjoy sex, ask a girl to move in with him etc.

at any point in time, he could have texted Marisol or gone back to the house and simply told her that he didn’t want to have sex with her just then. If he was seriously concerned that she would be upset or ignore him, that’s a different issue entirely. However, he has so much anxiety over sex and his own role as a man in a relationship that he ignores this idea altogether. He would rather avoid her all day than face the idea of coming home and not being able to provide sex. Sex that he doesn’t even necessarily want. I also think that’s why it’s so important to his character that his restarting with Marisol wasn’t predicated on a sexual encounter but rather on his own terms. It’s the first time that we’ve seen him take the time to say ‘maybe this isn’t necessarily something I’m ready for.’ And it’s WONDERFUL to see that.

Eddie’s relationships and his relationship to sex specifically is something that is incredibly fascinating to me because it screams amatanormativity and over compensating for something you’ve been told you should want and provide. Noted, I don’t necessarily like Eddie and Marisol and I certainly don’t like Marisol’s actress (I truly hope she leaves the series soon). However, I do like what this relationship is teaching Eddie about himself. I like that he’s slowing down and taking the time to think about what he wants rather than what’s expected of him.

I honestly thought Halbrand being Sauron would have been so on the nose, but somehow, they managed to make it absolutely fucking terrifying.

Think about it. He was pulling every single thread from the very beginning, with deadly purpose and terrifying precision. He knew exactly was he was doing at every step, the whole time. 

Yes, even if he was feeling repentant at any point, as published canon tells us he was -- I’ll be damned if he didn’t always have the option to completely drop the repentant ordinary life in Númenor the minute he ran into something that forced his hand, like Galadriel did, in the back of his mind. Or, even if she hadn’t -- the minute he got bored of playing ordinary smith.

And he would have. Yes, yes, he would -- he has a mind like a subtle knife. The very second he got bored...

He let Galadriel learn the truth about him. He had no reason to keep playing peaceful king -- he’d seen Celebrimbor at work, seen the elves’ panic first hand, seen Mordor take shape, seen all the key pieces having been moved into the right places.

He could have spun an actual, spoken lie, this time: that the line of the kings hadn’t been broken, that he was the very last survivor of a bloodline that had hidden itself for centuries. It would have been as easy to him as breathing.

But where’s the fun in that? Where’s the conquest? Why reign over an insignificant little mortal kingdom when you can have all of Middle-earth gripped in an iron fist?

Who wants mere subjects when you can have worshippers? 

Fuck repentance. Let the true king finally take what’s his. Tell Galadriel the truth.

Again.

That’s all he ever did. Not one lie, not once.

He is so horrifically good at what he does that he doesn’t even need to lie to deceive people.

He’s Sauron the Deceiver, after all.
