is this a...a Reading Triage??
Since I’m in a chatty mood, and also have spontaneously started reading again (amazing how well a 5.5-day break from work will start you right up), and expect to be off work for the full last week of the month as well, I’ve decided to get Ambitious and finally do one of these again!
I think I might actually stick to a plan of almost ten whole books in the next 30 days, on top of the one I read today, because I am -- get this -- wildly excited about a ton of upcoming reads again. I know, I can’t believe it either. I love this feeling. BEGONE, TWO-STARS. Maybe even begone 3 stars...
1. Summer of Sloane - Erin Schneider: I am actually about 1/3rd done with this one, but I set it aside a few days ago to finish reading at the beach, since it was perfect for that and the weather wasn’t being very beach-day-like, and now I can’t figure out where I put it. But hopefully I rectify that soon?
[edit: ✅ done! quite good, 3.5 stars but probably rounding up on goodreads]
2. Smothered - Autumn Chiklis: a spontaneous grab off my TBR, I am now about 1/4 of the way through this one and having a blast. One of the few genuinely light & funny books I’ve picked up this year.
[edit: ✅ all smiles here]
3. Falling Out of Time - Margaret Peterson Haddix: I made a post about it and now it is FINALLY at the library and waiting for me on the hold shelf.
[edit: ✅ glad I read it]
4. Girls of July - Alex Flinn: I have been meaning to read this for the last 3 summers but I finally own it AND know where it is. This is the summer I make it happen! Almost definitely!! Four girls sharing a cabin for a month in the Adironacks, vaguely giving me Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants vibes? Yes.
[edit: if I don’t read this one, please know that it’s because “where it is” is an open grocery bag that hasn’t been touched for a year and has a spiderweb stretched across it that needs vacuuming before I can touch it, and I keep forgetting or only remembering before 9 AM or after 11PM]
5. Something Wilder - Christina Lauren: I’ve never read one of their books (except the YA novel that is a very different style and tone), but this one has me all kinds of excited. Second chance romance? Fake guided treasure hunts, but secretly maybe real treasure too? Danger?? I wanted to read it last year but the request list was REAL so I was waiting for the fervor to die down, and now it has. Mostly. I should have a copy by the 20th, at least.
[edit: ✅ fun, perfect for summer, great introduction to their adult work]
6. Something Wild & Wonderful - Anita Kelly: I wasn’t really looking for a m/m romance at the moment, and I will definitely be bracing myself to skip some scenes, but a novel about hiking the PCT just feels like a summer necessity.
[edit: ✅ exactly what I wanted]
7. Peacock Summer - Hannah Richell: a dual-timelines novel about a mansion and Family Secrets. It’s been on my TBR since it was released but it wasn’t at local libraries -- and then I found a copy at a garage sale last month! So, hyped.
8. Famous For a Living - Melissa Ferguson:
I splurged on Once Upon a Book Club for the first time, and it arrived yesterday and I am positively SQUEALING with excitement. Actually planning to bump this up to my next read as soon as I finish the books I’m in the middle of. Or maybe after the Haddix book.
[edit: ✅ done! worth my purchase but also definitely should have been saved for winter]

James Merkel Terminated by Merrill Lynch Over Private Securities Sales
According to BrokerCheck records kept by The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) advisor James Merkel (Merkel), in August 2017, was terminated by his employer Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith Incorporated (Merrill Lynch) after the firm alleged that Merkel violated firm policy relating to selling away.
Prior to the firm’s termination, in June 2016 a customer filed a complaint alleging unsuitable investment recommendations and misrepresentation and omission of material facts involving options.  The customer alleged $1,000,000 in damages and the claim is currently pending.
At this time it is unclear the extent and scope of Merkel’s securities violations and outside business activites.  Merkel’s CRD lists that he operates an outside business activity concerning real property.  Merkel also lists an entity called Merkel’s Lfan LLC that is a business that produces adironack chairs and other items.  At this time it is unknown the exact nature of the firm’s allegations concerning private securities transactions – a practice known in the industry as “selling away”.
In the industry the term selling away refers to when a financial advisor solicits investments in companies, promissory notes, or other securities that are not pre-approved by the broker’s affiliated firm.  However, even though when these incidents occur the brokerage firm claims ignorance of their advisor’s activities the firm is obligated under the FINRA rules to properly monitor and supervise its employees in order to detect and prevent brokers from offering investments in this fashion.  In order to properly supervise their brokers each firm is required to have procedures in order to monitor the activities of each advisor’s activities and interaction with the public.  Selling away misconduct often occurs where brokerage firms either fail to put in place a reasonable supervisory system or fail to actually implement that system.  Supervisory failures allow brokers to engage in unsupervised misconduct that can include all manner improper conduct including selling away.
In cases of selling away the investor is unaware that the advisor’s investments are improper.  In many of these cases the investor will not learn that the broker’s activities were wrongful until after the investment scheme is publicized, the broker is fired or charged by law enforcement, or stops returning client calls altogether.
Merkel entered the securities industry in 1984.  From 1984 until Setpember 2017 Merkel was associated with Merrill Lynch out of the firm’s Frederick, Maryland office location.
Investors who have suffered losses may be able recover their losses through securities arbitration.  The attorneys at Gana LLP are experienced in representing investors in cases of selling away and brokerage firms failure to supervise their representatives.  Our consultations are free of charge and the firm is only compensated if you recover.

Five Stars Great book detailing The Philosophers Camp in the ADK! Go to Amazon
An absolutely fascinating account on Philosophers Camp, a gathering ... An absolutely fascinating account on Philosophers Camp, a gathering of intellectuals in the Adironacks in the 19th century. The author James Schlett has an incredible ability for giving these long deceased luminaries a personification that made their motiviations and attitudes feel fresh and alive. The book is meticulously researched from personal correspondences between the subjects of the book allowing us to witness the inner workings of a who's who of important Boston area figures. A very enjoyable and fascinating read overall! Definitely recommend Go to Amazon
A worthy book-length subject, given that the Adirondack visits ... A worthy book-length subject, given that the Adirondack visits of several Boston luminaries has been treated briefly elsewhere. Well researched, and an invitation to read more about transcendentalism in general and the participating philosophers themselves. The book would have benefited from copyediting, to catch typos and deal with occasional snarls in the narrative. Also, given that William James Stillman is the central figure, it's odd that his first wife's suicide gets just two sentences, and that there is no mention of his second wife for the last two decades of his life. Still, a valuable contribution. Go to Amazon
Hooked from the beginning! In “A Not Too Greatly Changed Eden” James Schlett fleshes out a complex character of artist and entrepreneur William James Stillman. The reader gains insight into the unique flow of society before the Civil War and how social norms influenced choices and decisions that Stillman faced. Even though I knew the gathering took place I enjoyed reading how this drama unfolded and read with wonder the difficulties of travel, communication and soothing of egos required to bring this gathering about. I learned things about Emerson, Agassiz, Longfellow and other notables that I did not know before reading Schlett’s book. I enjoyed it immensely! Thank you, James, for your hard work. Go to Amazon
Bravo! Excellent! Schlett writes with grace and insight on every page. A must-read for everyone with an interest in Adirondack history, natural history, and literature. Here all the threads that led Stillman, Emerson, Agassiz, Lowell, and other to camp on a remote pond in the summer of 1858 are woven into a grand story, beautifully told. Go to Amazon
Too much Stillman I've been intrigued by the Philosopher's Camp since I heard about it and this is probably as thorough account as is possible. The subtitle should be "a biography of James Stillman," since that's the main focus. I personally didn't find Stillman very interesting but I guess it was necessary to fill the book. If you're intensely interested in ADK history (as I am), it's a must read. Otherwise, it's a bit dry. Go to Amazon
Must read! I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a very educational and enlightening! A must read on topics barely discussed in history classes! Go to Amazon
