Danse Macabre by Black American Artist Meta Vaux Warrick Fuller (1914)
The Danse Macabre consists of the dead, or a personification of death, summoning representatives from all walks of life to dance along to the grave, typically with a pope, emperor, king, child, and labourer. The effect is both frivolous and terrifying, beseeching its audience to react emotionally.

Johannes Bjerg, 'Abyssinian' 1914/15
Tumblr media
Johannes C. Bjerg, 1886/1955, having received a scholarship arrived in Paris in 1911, meeting the cubist group Section d'Or, he moved to the Bateau-Lavoir of Pablo Picasso and Juan Gris.
Their neighbor was the Spanish sculptor Auguste Agero 1880/1946 whose influence would be decisive for Bjerg.
Tumblr media
In his studio “modern” sculpture and African artifacts coexist, discovering a new range of models and motifs.
It was naturally at Agero that Johannes Bjerg met the young Ethiopian model who posed for the Abyssinian (Abyssinia being the old name of Ethiopia).
Tumblr media
Bjerg was enthusiastic about this boy and made several variations of it.
Tumblr media
The model's slim and slender figure inspired other artists such as the Russian Alexander Archipenko, 1887/1964, Roter Tanz (Danse Rouge, or Blue Dancer) 1912/13
Tumblr media
German Georg Kolbe, 1877/1947, ballerino, 1914
Tumblr media
And Bjerg's compatriot, Svend Rathsack, 1885/1941, Ung mand med falk, 1914/17
Tumblr media
With his slender body we can say that this young man actively participated in the artists' craze for the African figure and if we do not know the identity of the model, at least the poses he takes are unequivocally the attitudes of 'a dancer.
The first “negro” dance was introduced to Paris by Gabriel Astruc at the Nouveau Cirque in 1903: it was in fact the cake walk inspired by American minstrel shows.
In 1925, Josephine Baker had a triumph with the “Revue Négre”
“Negro art? Don’t know,” Picasso (1881-1973) asserted in 1920, yet with his whole gang, Braque, Matisse, Derain, they discovered, with astonishment, this unprecedented art which distorts and recomposes what their eye, in an innate way, is accustomed to seeing.

When can we use blackface in ballet?
In the past years, growing attention has been paid to the presence of racist stereotypes in the ballet world, particularly the use of blackface.
Almost entirely banned in northern America and Europe, this practice is still very much in use in the Soviet world. In Russia in particular, the idea of blackface being a racist and grotesque practice has always been vehemently rejected, almost to the point of absurdity (think of the Instagram picture of the Vaganova student in full blackface as part of the now infamous Danse des Negrillons). So it was really shocking seeing it on stage for the first time.
This was before the pandemic when I went to Saint Petersburg as a birthday present to myself to see the Mariinsky Theatre in Spartacus. Mind you, this is not Grigorovich's version of Spartacus, which the Bolshoi is known for and which focuses on the main characters, giving them great virtuosic variations.
Yakobson's Spartacus at the Mariinsky Theatre
The one at the Mariinsky is an incredibly grandiose and opulent production, which puts a huge emphasis on the depiction of scenes of Roman everyday life (they even brought a horse on stage).
And then came a scene depicting the first battle of the gladiators in Act I (of which a snippet can be found here). There are three gladiators fighting: one is in a "brown tan", one is in a very dark blackface, and the other is white. In the synopsis, it is described as a fight between a "Gaul" (from France), a "Numidian" (from North Africa), and an "African".
But the aim was historical accuracy...
Using the tan in this way was of course a very obvious way of conveying the place of origin of these gladiators, even to those like me who weren't familiar with this production. However, I realise that what resonated with me the most, was the willingness to depict the multi-national and multi-racial character of the Roman empire, which spanned from England to northern Africa, to the Middle East. Something that is often overlooked in our whitewashed version of Roman history.
Even though this was the first time I saw full blackface in the theatre, and believe me when I say it truly shocked me, I somehow found myself appreciating this element of historical accuracy.
Could that have been achieved in a different way?
Actually, yes.
Gladiators from different regions wore different weaponry, so different armour choices could have been sufficient to distinguish between the three different fighters, albeit in a less obvious way.
Was this ok?
At the end of the day, even though the motivation is understandable, and could even be painted in a light of inclusivity, this practice only worked because of the particular context it was in. It was a way of communicating meant by and for Russians who are notoriously not as diverse as the modern audience in America or Europe.
I, just like the Russian audience, didn't feel personally attacked by the use of blackface, as I never had to deal with that very specific form of discrimination based on skin colour. This is why I could focus on the fact that that particular costume choice was meant as a way to include historically accurate details.
Reimagining more inclusive representation on stage requires a greater diversity not just amongst the ballet dancers, but most importantly within the artistic direction, so as to include a different sensibility in the whole production.
What do you think?

do you have any stromae suggestions? i’ve only heard tous le meme
okay i might not be the best person to ask bc i havent listened to his ENTIRE discography but i'll do my best
he has three LPs: cheese, racine caree (square root) and multitudes which came out last spring. i like cheese the least -- it's more straightforward dance music whereas on RC his sound got more eclectic and unique imo -- he included a lot of african and caribbean musical influences which really zhuzhs the whole thing up imo. but alors on danse is his breakout song from cheese and it's definitely good.
racine caree is his big album which went diamond like a billion times in the french speaking world. basically every song on it is good imo but my personal favorites besides tous les memes are avf, papaoutai, formidable, ta fete, ave cesaria, batard and sommeil.
i havent dove deep on multitudes but i have yet to find a bad song on that one either. fils de joie is very good and shows off his method of using music as an almost literary tool really well (every verse is another character's perspective about a sex worker with the chorus being the SWer's son, who anchors it all).
i hope u enjoy!

Dear Diary,
This back to school period make me nostalgic of my high school. Academie royale was fabulous, one of the most beautiful place I've seen.
Tumblr media
I then did not knew the aesthetic, but it was  "Dark academia" before it existed. Dark, mysterious, full of corners, 300 years old...
Tumblr media
I won't forget its library, that smelt dust and old paper.
Tumblr media
Teachers were mostly nuns, and the junior high school all girls. Back then, we wore those oh so stylish uniforms.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The high school was co educated, and clothing of our choice but everyone was dressed preppy style. All students belonged to high society, mostly with a tile (as for me, I still thought I was only a  Lady).
Tumblr media
Speaking of students: I've met on the first day (and they were in my  class until my senior year), Perle, Alice, Elvira, Rosalie, and Christel.
Perle is my best friend, my twin shadow. Flaming redhead, she thinks like  I do, and is Disnerd too . She well named (pearl) as she is a rare gem. She loved princesses stories, and always acted as such.
Tumblr media
Elvira is dark, mysterious, fascinating. She dyed her hair black, and would relook her uniform Goth style. In high school she seemed  "haute Goth". It was with  Perle and me the most interested in witchcraft.
Tumblr media
Alice is  blonde, tall, very pretty. And talented, especially in horse riding and ballet.
Tumblr media
Rosalie is of African origin , and very romantic. She loved fairies stories and is a skilled musician.
Tumblr media
Christel is of Asian origin, very talented in sciences and astronomy.  And in history, just like me.
Tumblr media
Cher journal,

Tumblr media
(Real World)
BY JORDAN MAINZER
On their 3rd album Musow Danse, supergroup Les Amazones d'Afrique hook up with legendary producer Jacknife Lee and delve into wider swaths of music of the African diaspora. What started as the collective (of shifting membership) playing the kora as a message of metaphorical defiance against traditional West African music-based gender roles, is now something that finds its power in more contemporary styles. Their voices and statements of solidarity blend swimmingly with rubbery synths, syncopated handclaps, skittering arpeggios, and hip hop drums.
Yes, Musow Danse features everything you loved in the first place about Les Amazones d'Afrique, from pure funk to their mind-boggling ability to bounce between multiple languages on one song. But this time around, each song feels like its own composition that can stand alone just as well as it ties in with the other songs on the record. The two that feature the majority of the group are immediate standouts. The opening title track presents the vocals of Fafa Ruffino, Mamani Keïta, Kandy Guira, and Dobet Gnahoré, chanting in unison, "Rise up, African woman" and expelling vocal trills, against a driving beat and panning distortion. "Kuma Fo (What They Say)", meanwhile, sports a similar mix between the tactile and the atmospheric, hand percussion rolling alongside meaty hip hop beats and screeching synthesizers. "Flaws" is already one of the best pure pop songs of 2024, Keïta and Ruffino paying tribute to the imperfections that make us ourselves, alongside some club-ready 808s. And new member Alvie Bitemo shows off her vocal range on "Mother Murakoze" and "Amahoro (Don't Get Angry"), intense and throaty in comparison to the abstract, glassy synthesizers and upbeat drumline snares.
In speaking about Musow Danse, Ruffino mentioned that Lee, despite not knowing the various languages sung on the album, was able to feel the spirit of the words. Though it's likely impossible for the average listener to hold a similarly intimate connection, experiencing the record is still an exercise in deep listening, an appreciation of contrast not just as a sonic tool but as an emphasis on the innate worth of each individual voice. On album closer "Bobo Me", Nneka's atmospheric falsetto nestles between the depth of Keïta's stop-starts. Gnahoré's upfront vocal subsumes the circular rhythms of "Kiss Me" and the deliberate, yet shifting tempo of "My Place". With Les Amazones d'Afrique, there's room for it all, the bigger the tent, the more powerful the music.

Josephine Baker-
Tumblr media
Josephine Baker was a world-renowned performer, World War 2 spy and an activist. Baker was one of the most successful African American performers in French history, her career changed the ways entertainers can use their platforms to change the world.
Josephine Baker was born on June 3rd in 1906 in St Louis, Missouri. Her parents were both entertainers and performed throughout the Midwest, often brining Josephine on stage during their shows. Sadly, their careers never took off which forced Baker when she was young to look for odd jobs to survive. She would often dance on the streets collecting money if she couldn’t find any work. Eventually her routine caught the attention of an African American theatre group. At the age of 15, Baker ran away to perform with the group. She also married during this time, taking her husband’s last name (Baker).
Baker’s career exceeded as a dancer as she performed in several Vaudeville shows, which was a popular genre in the 20th century. She moved to New York City and then her success took her to Paris. Baker became one of the most popular performers due to her distinct dancing style and unique costumes. Even though her audiences being mostly white, her performances followed African themes and styles. In her famous show Danse Sauvage, she danced across the stage in a banana skirt.
