perhaps the most objectively hilarious txf dynamic is scully and krycek hating each other so fucking much while narratively fulfilling the exact same role. scully baby are you mad because he's you with longer eyelashes

I never understood what people meant when they said characters you “love to hate”
And then I met Alex Krycek

Spender as a concept is more interesting than he actually ends up being.
Also I’ve decided that Krycek told Spender the truth because he hates CSM. I know he made that speech about him being a great man but I don’t believe he meant it. Sure, he’ll work with CSM and the syndicate, maybe even believes in the cause to the extent he thinks it’s best for his survival but nothing about his actions suggest that he admires them. Perhaps he wants Spender on his side for some reason or maybe he just wants to cause problems for everyone.

bury all your secrets in my skin
3k, alex krycek/fox mulder, rated e
🚬 "sexy" motel room shenanigans, set in a universe where krycek stays on as mulder's partner for a while after scully's abduction 🚬 and what better way to gain your partner's trust than sex? 🚬 another excuse for some krycek whump, just of a different vibe 🚬 you don't really get to have feelings when you're a double agent—krycek just never get that interoffice memo 🚬 references to krycek/the smoker for some added flavor
description: Krycek has done so many worse things than play buoy for a drowning man.
excerpt: After Mulder peels off Krycek’s clothes and then his own, it’s all easy, rote. Just a checklist of motions to go through, something Krycek could do in his sleep. He sometimes thinks of it all like cleaning a gun. Dismantling it, cleaning off all of the pieces and parts, inventorying everything, and then putting it back together again. Clinical. Routine. A little messy, sure, but so is killing a man and that’s never made Krycek flinch, either.

All Eyes Lead to the Truth | Season Four Master Post
Season four is one of the most beloved seasons of The X-Files, and we had a lot of fun exploring the background characters that helped make it so special!
Check out this thread to see all the characters we got to meet this season!
Tumblr media
Herrenvolk (4x01) | X
No one would remember him, and if they did, they would struggle to remember a name they were never told. The memory of his existence would remain occluded by the shadows he lived in.
Home (4x02) | Sheriff Andy Taylor
For protection, his father had said, as he pressed the unfamiliar cold metal into Taylor’s warm hand. To keep your family safe.
To keep your home safe.
He shuts the drawer. He isn’t ready for this reality, not now. Not yet.
Teliko (4x03) | Special Agent Sean Pendrell
With them, it was never something simple. It was a computer chip so fragile he could barely study it. It was a complex string of numbers and letters tracking a smallpox vaccination program for reasons he couldn’t even begin to fathom.
This was what he went to school for.
Unruhe (4x04) | Gerry Schnauz
Gerry knew she needed his help the moment they met. There was a howler inside of her head — a black mass invading her body and mind.
The Field Where I Died (4x05) | Melissa Rydell Ephesian
Melissa struggled with the idea of reincarnation, but dared not show it. And as it turned out, a broken link in the chain of her faith led to more broken links.
When she first saw Vernon hurt a child, the chain shattered.
Sanguinarium (4x06) | Dr. Theresa Shannon
The face on the computer had looked just like Jack, but that had to be impossible. The science of surgery hadn’t come that far. To spread the eyes further apart, change features completely… and besides, she knows him. Knows the person he is…
Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man (4x07) | Albert M. Godwinkle
All Albert M. Godwinkle wants today is to read a halfway decent manuscript that puts a smile on his disgruntled face. Today is not that day.
Tunguska (4x08) | Alex Krycek
If looks could kill, Alex would be a dead man. But he thrives off this, off making Mulder squirm. It’s just so fucking easy.
Terma (4x09) | Senator Albert Sorenson
He was a staunch proponent of holding insubordinate witnesses in contempt when the court was not being respected, and no one, not even a government employee, was immune to that.
Paper Hearts (4x10) | Addie Sparks
The little girl he loves is gone, and she is never coming back.
Just like me.
El Mundo Gira (4x11) | Migrant Worker
At the simple mention of El Chupacabra, the shack erupted in a cacophony of worry, as if merely saying the name might summon the beast.
Leonard Betts (4x12) | Michele Wilkes
Even through the panic she felt screaming through her that nothing about this was okay, she felt a moment of relief wash over her. Maybe it had all been a dream. Maybe her partner hadn’t died while she was at the wheel.
Never Again (4x13) | Ed Jerse
Deadbeat. Loser. Failure.
He’s heard it all, and he has had enough. No one humiliates Ed Jerse anymore. No, not now. Never again.
Memento Mori (4x14) | Kurt Crawford
What is destined for a creature borne of fluid and test tubes, guided by the hands of cruel men?
Kaddish (4x15) | Ariel Luria
Someone else’s hatred had taken her true love away. Just like that, in an instant, like it was nothing. But it was not hatred that led her to the gravesite that stormy night.
Unrequited (4x16) | Special Agent Kent Hill
Hill slides in his earpiece, watching as their eyes lock. His wife would call it eavesdropping, but as he steps closer, tilting his head just right to better hear their hushed voices, Hill simply calls it satisfying a long-standing curiosity.
Tempus Fugit (4x17) | Bartender
The man tried to fluff the pink ball back into shape after presumably squashing it in his pocket. “The woman I came in with— it’s her birthday, and she loves these things. I was wondering if there was any way you could ask someone in the back to put it on a plate and bring it out to her?”
Max (4x18) | Sharon Graffia
Sharon Graffia isn’t a liar. She’d only done what she needed to in order for people to believe her. All she’s ever wanted was someone to believe her.
Synchrony (4x19) | Jason Nichols
Naïveté and a complete lack of understanding of the consequences of their work had been their downfall. But how could they have known?
Small Potatoes (4x20) | Eddie Van Blundht
It didn’t take him long to realize he’d initially misread the situation when he saw them at the clinic. Based on the look Dana Scully shot him when he tried to hold her hand at the airport, he knew he was navigating territory Fox Mulder had yet to conquer.
Zero Sum (4x21) | Billy
He slowly twisted his neck to the right, and was horrified by the sight before him. In the next bed over was David from his class, his face covered in gross red bumps. He looked dead.
Billy didn’t know what else to do. He started crying.
Elegy (4x22) | Lauren Heller
She had an exam in the morning. Her mother’s birthday was the following weekend. She had plans.
Demons (4x23) | Amy Cassandra
As she speaks, the deep wound in her skull throbs, reminding her that that was true, until weeks ago when she’d traded the nightmare of one penetrating drill with the reality of another.
Gesthemane (4x24) | Father McCue
Her faith had come from God, yes… but it had also come from another, less expected source. Perhaps it still did.
Stay tuned for more perspectives coming in Season Five!
1 | 2 | 3 | 4
We spend so much time deliberating and chatting about who to use in a given episode or where certain characters would be best utilized in the series, and we'd love to hear any opinions or predictions you might have! Do you have a favorite minor character? What episodes do you think would be best for our favorite recurring characters? Your feedback is one of the most enjoyable parts of this project (and sometimes hearing other perspectives can help inform the decisions we have to make). - @admiralty-xfd, @fridaysat9, @monikafilefan, and @gaycrouton

He Works Alone
during sleepless krycek has a heated argument with mulder; 1.1k words; rated e; tagging @today-in-fic and @leonardbetts
read on ao3
Alex follows Mulder out of the morgue, playing catch up to the quick clip of his oxfords in the tiled floor. He jogs up to him before he can reach the double doors to the main hallway; his own footsteps an indignant outcry for Mulder to slow down which goes ignored. He finally gets him to listen with a hand to grab his shoulder, spinning him around to face him. There is a vexed look upon Mulder's face as if he had been persecuted before Alex could say a word.
Wary, Alex takes a breath and tries yet fails to keep the bite from his voice. “Hey, so what was that in there?”
“What?” Mulder's eyes search his for clarification; almost the perfect picture of innocence.
He shakes his head slowly, incredulously. “You and agent…”
“Scully?”
“Yeah,” he chuffs half a laugh. “Do you usually get your pathologists by special request?”
Mulder glances at the hand still on his shoulder and Alex retracts it suddenly feeling his palm grow clammy. Mulder levels a stare at him, a strange cocktail of warning and attempted comprehension. As the seconds pass, Alex is caught in the tide of his dark eyes and feels his mouth dry and his cheeks flame under the scrutiny.
Mulder turns around and continues to walk before he answers, “She's just a friend; we used to work together.”
Alex stands his ground. “Just a friend, huh?”
The speed with which Mulder whips back around to point a finger almost stuns him. “What are you trying to say?”
Alex looks away and licks his lips. “Did you not see the way she looks at you, Mulder?”
“Careful there, you almost sound jealous.”
He laughs and shakes his head. “Look, I don't care how you go about finding leads in this investigation; I know your methods are…”
“What?” Mulder steps closer. “Spooky?” His eyes dart darkly between both of his, searching. “Like I haven't heard that before. You'll have to try harder to insult me Alex.”
“I was gonna say unconventional–and I'm not trying to insult you. All I'm saying is I'd like to be kept in on this investigation.”
“You were there.” His voice scratches low and quiet, earnest.
Alex squares up to him. “You were keeping such close quarters I didn't hear a thing you said!” he hisses. “Whispering? Like she was the only other person in the room? You had your backs turned to me; I couldn't even read your lips.”
Mulder scoffs, the hot air tickling Alex’s face. “Now this right here–” he jabs a finger into Alex’s sternum– “this is why I work alone.”
Emboldened, Alex leans into the contact, forcing Mulder back. “But you don't! You were working with agent Scully just fine!” A pause hangs between them; the silence only filled by his ragged breathing. Alex makes the mistake of looking down at Mulder's lips. He closes his eyes, restraining, yet the thought lies hot and heavy at the forefront of his prefrontal cortex. The thought dares him to lean forward but instead he backs away; his best attempt to break the tension. “Look, man, all I'm asking for is a chance.”
His shoulders are suddenly grasped firmly and Mulder’s accusatory whisper rings in his ears. “You are jealous, aren't you?”
Finally snapping, Alex shoves him against the wall, his arm to Mulder’s throat exercising every inch of his strength over him. He hesitates only briefly, questioning whether he is really going to do this but the flush to Mulder’s cheeks decides for him. He crushes his lips to Mulders’ coaxing the reaction he wants out of him, the one he knows is there somewhere buried beneath his love for that pathologist.
Surprised, Mulder reciprocates briefly before pushing Alex away to the middle of the corridor, leaving him stranded in the open.
For the smallest of seconds, he is afraid Mulder will sock his jaw. He watches his taut body for any hint of what will happen next. His hands resting at his sides don't curl into fists but flex outwards as if trying to dispel a feeling harbouring there.
Mulder then strides forward, taking Alex in one swift motion, pushing him to the other wall pressing his body to the brick. His tongue licks as teeth nip at Alex's lips and it's Alex's turn to gasp in surprise: a fatal mistake as Mulder closes in. Hand spread on Alex's chest, Mulder digs his fingers in. Alex can't stop his eyes rolling back and a groan in his throat as Mulder flexes his hips into his own.
Grasping his slender hips, Alex turns them and drops to his knees, making quick work of the pants’ fastening. His own gut clenches and his heart pounds at being eye level with Mulder's crotch. He curls his fingers into the elastic of his boxers and yanks them down, freeing Mulder's burgeoning erection. In his hands, Mulder grows and against his lips he twitches. Alex looks up through dark eyelashes as he teases the head of Mulder's cock with his darting tongue.
He wraps his lips around his cock and sucks him deeper into his mouth, watching as Mulder's head tips back against the wall, his chin pointing upwards and his neck stretching gloriously, so that Alex can see his Adam's apple bob when he swallows. He hears every puff of air that passes Mulder's slack lips and imagines his eyes screwed shut in perfect agony. He takes his time, slowly teasing every inch of pleasure from him in a play for power that is intoxicating. He’s impressed with Mulder’s size, with his pretty cock; he’s seen plenty to know the difference and the way Mulder sits heavy on his tongue is a sweet satisfaction. He hums his appreciation as he watches it disappear beyond his lips.
Another hiss from Mulder and his hands are tugging in his hair, encouraging him to be quicker, harder, rougher. Alex brings a hand to the base of his cock, squeezing tightly while he digs the fingers of his other hand into his ass cheek, pulling him forward. Mulder’s grunt spurs him on.
With a gasp, Mulder jerks his hips forwards as he comes, and Alex doubles down, taking everything he has. After licking his softening cock clean, Alex lets him hang open in the cool air, pulling on a cool mask of indifference over his emotions; as if the taste of his cum wasn’t still toying with his taste buds and his own heart wasn’t pounding in his chest all the way down to his own hardon that desperately begged attention.
He stands and is face to face with Mulder, smirking at his flushed cheeks. Head still resting against the wall, Mulder looks back at him, panting, “I could have you reported, Krycek.”
“I may be a green agent, Mulder, but this isn't my first rodeo.” He wipes the corner of his mouth with the pad of his thumb and then sucks it into his mouth salaciously, hollowing his cheeks for a punctuated effect. “I'll be back at the car when you need me.”

I saw you tagged that photo of Mulder, Krycek and Scully as “I’m so fascinated by them”; can you talk about that? I don’t know if I’ve given too much thought to their dynamic before and I’m curious as to why you like them as a trio
anon, i want to walk you through a scenario. you’re a 29 year old medical doctor teaching classes at quantico after having been separated from your first assignment at the fbi. you miss your partner. you’re giving morbid lectures and nearly crying when a student says you sound “spooky” and arranging covert meetings at the watergate hotel.
one day, your ex-partner reaches out to ask for your help on a case! you’ve been waiting for this for months! you practically begged to autopsy a body covered in sewage waste and mutant worms for this!
he comes to see you about the case, and your face falls as you realize that he’s brought with him a new partner. “this is alex krycek, we’re working the case together,” he says. standing next to this barbie doll looking motherfucker (whose hand you pointedly refuse to shake).
your wary “trust no one” friend, who accused you of being a spy when it was your first day on his assignment, has seemingly taken to this new ally. they’re carpooling and saving each other’s lives in train stations and venturing into hostage situations without telling you. (“sounds like your new partner is working out…must be nice not having someone question your every move,” you tell him cheekily over the phone).
in a split second, a broken window, a mountaintop- your life changes forever. three months of missing time, and you come back to find a reopened office and an FBI agent without a partner; that hand you refused to shake participated in your violation, then disappeared without a trace.
it isn’t long before he’s back: one, two, three gunshots fired. a father. an apartment wall. a sister.
(though i don’t know if scully ever found out that krycek was there when her sister was killed)
in a moment of quick thinking and sweaty desperation, you break up a fight and trade a bullet in the deceiver for a bullet in your partner’s shoulder; less than a year after introduction in your autopsy bay, you save both lives.
over the years, he’s the shadow you can’t quite shake. when your partner makes his way to hong kong or russia, it’s not you that goes trailing after.
you do follow his tracks into a dark apartment, ask him, what are you thinking about? listen to him tell you about destiny. fate. the “inextricable relationships” of our lives.
when he changes his tune, suddenly willing to follow leads he had admonished you for suggesting, you could swear you heard russian translation.
(i know scully doesn’t know that krycek kissed him)
office fires, nanobots, and air force base abductions later, you strategize over chinese takeout and pizza. you stand at the head of the table, your partner two people removed, the russian to his immediate left.
perhaps it would be too much to ask, after the funeral, to grieve free of threat. nonetheless, there’s leather around hospital corners, broken vials in the garage, a seat taken at the bureau when you still don’t have one to share.
three more gunshots, the spy dies and you give birth on the same day. it’s colder without a shadow, though you can’t say you miss it.
you stand in a court of law and can’t help but notice, your partner looking over his shoulder.

The X-Files 4x8 Tunguska and 4x9 Terma
I think about these 2 episodes so frequently! I think about the dynamic of Mulder and Krycek's relationship specifically in these episodes. I know people never want to believe there's something between them but come on!
In Terma the prisoner in the cell next to Mulder gives him a shiv he's been working on for weeks so he can kill Krycek and escape. Mulder takes it and has it in his hand when he sees Krycek talking to the prison commandant in the prison yard. He looks like a jilted lover! He rushes him and you're thinking, "This is it, he's about to kill Krycek!" What does our favorite FBI agent do?
He punches Alex in the face knocking him unconscious with the hand holding the make-shift weapon!!!!!! (I can't find a screen cap for this!) If that doesn't show Mulder has feelings for Krycek I don't know what does! Then, Mulder drives them both away in a truck! This is just one of the many examples they both have to kill each other and they never do!

𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲: When Mulder arrests Alex Krycek, he sets the stage for a dangerous reprise. Y/N is now in the line of fire, and Mulder's enemies are determined to hurt her if it means breaking his morale. He must make a choice: let her go, or condemn her. 𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐬𝐭/𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐟𝐟

Agent Mulder arched his back against the Interrogation room's rigid steel seating. His body ached with tension. He breathed in time with the steady ticking of the clock, and ignored the dullness of the swinging lights above. He fixated his attention onto the detainee seated across the table, determined to hear the truth.
Alex Krycek stared back just as intently.
"I'm not sure why you're smiling, pal," Mulder said, finally. He loosened his tie before skimming over a folder of printed documents. "Murder... conspiracy... treason... domestic terrorism... You've been caught on every front. You can count out a miraculous escape this time."
Sickly shadows ghosted across the room's cracked walls. Krycek grinned, his eyes darkened from the shade. "You think you've got me trapped? Sorry to rock you off your pedestal, space boy, but I won't be sticking around."
"You're not going to hurt anyone else," Mulder pressed. "I've nailed you."
Krycek leaned back in his seat and jangled his chained wrists. "This won't last," he scoffed. "You're a smart man, Agent Mulder, so use your brain. We both know that I have connections." He leaned forwards until Mulder could feel the whisper of his breath when he spoke. "You threw off my mission. My employer won't be pleased. There will be consequences to your derailment of his progress."
"You're talking about Black Lungs, aren't you?" Mulder grinned. "I hate to break it to you, but throwing off his dirty schemes is my job."
"And breaking your morale is his."
Krycek licked his lips in dark satisfaction. His handcuffs chimed merrily as he leaned forwards and lowered his voice. "By arresting me, you've slowed down the old man's plans," he whispered. "Now it's time to pay the price."
Mulder's jaw clenched at the subtle threat. "What are you saying?" He asked carefully.
"Your heart, Mulder. He's going after your heart." Krycek pulled back and winked. "Y/N is in the line of fire now."
Mulder's eyes dropped down to the table. His fists clenched until nails pierced skin. The air seemed denser than it had a moment ago. The clock kept ticking, but his breathing strayed from its rhythm.
Without warning, Mulder lunged forwards and gripped the collar of Krycek's tattered coat. "Nobody touches her!" He shouted. "Do you hear me? Nobody lays a hand on Y/N!" He tightened his grip until he heard the tear of stitches.
"You did this to her, Agent Mulder! Nobody asked you to be the hero!"
Mulder's grip faltered as the echo of Krycek's words set in. His own ambitions had ultimately jeopardized Y/N's wellbeing. He pulled back roughly and stood up. He felt shaky on his feet, but held his ground. He studied Krycek's indifference, looking for any sign of deceit in his cold eyes. He searched for a reason to believe that Y/N would be okay, but found none.
From his periphery, Mulder noticed another agent and a guard rush through the door. He shoved past them, but before departing, he spoke crisply. "If anything happens to her, I swear that not even the iron clad bars around your prison cell will keep me from getting to you, Krycek. I won't let you hurt her."
Krycek spared a glance behind his shoulder. "Then I guess you'd better run, Agent."
***
Y/N lounged on the sofa of apartment 42, listening to the static of the radio. Fox was due home hours ago, but it was past midnight and there was still no sign of him.
She began to drift off, lulled by the late night quiet. She had nearly fallen asleep when the front door creaked open.
"Fox?"
He didn't reply. Y/N watched as he stepped towards her and knelt down.
She studied the shadows beneath his eyes. Even through the darkness, she could see that something was wrong. "Are you alright?"
Mulder pressed his lips together. His brows furrowed in contemplation as he focused on his next move.
"I need you to listen to me," he said, finally. "I know that you deserve an explanation, but I don't have time for it right now." He leaned forwards, close enough that Y/N could feel the warmth of his breath. "You need to pack up a change of clothes, and you need to leave. Now."
Y/N's eyes darted across his terse features. He seemed disheveled. There was an urgency to his tone that she didn't recognize. What worried her most was the fear in his eyes.
"Fox? I don't understand what you're telling me." She reached for his hand, but he jerked back.
"We're running out of time! The longer we wait here, the greater their chance of finding you. Can't you understand that?" Mulder stood up and flicked on the lights. He began collecting Y/N's things, desperate to send her away.
"Who's going to find me?" she asked, frightened. "What's going on? What aren't you telling me?"
He said nothing.
Y/N watched as he crudely packed up, fetching what he could find. He moved quickly, his actions mirroring his urgency.
"Fox?"
He ignored her questions, and concentrated on his duffle bag instead. He tried to be meticulous, if only to push away the dark reality that was creeping in too close.
Y/N finally snapped. She rushed towards him and gripped at his sleeve. "Mulder, just tell me the truth!"
He paused.
"The truth?" His eyes burned at the effort of his control. He dropped the duffle bag. "I don't even know what that is anymore. I don't know where the truth begins or ends. All I know is that somewhere along my search for it, I fell down the rabbit hole, and now, the price for my mania is your life."
He gripped Y/N's shoulders. The blue of his eyes gleamed through unspent tears as he struggled through his next breath. "I've killed you, Y/N. That's my truth."
Y/N dizzied at his words. She always knew that Mulder's place in the X-Files carried with it threats of danger, but she never expected to be caught in the middle of it. Nevertheless, she refused to blame him for their predicament. Their relationship had always been a risk, but it was one that they took together.
She pressed a hand against his chest. "Don't think for a second that this is your fault," she said. "I chose to be a part of your life. Whatever's happening, we'll get through it."
She laid a kiss at the corner of his mouth. "We're okay," she whispered.
Mulder's jaw clenched. He pulled back and  grasped her hands in both of his own. "I love you," he said softly. "And I appreciate your assurances, but this is bigger than you can imagine. I'll be damned before I see you hurt." He rested his forehead against hers and shut his eyes. "You'll be safe once you're far away from me. Please. Just go."
Y/N was almost convinced by the desperation of his tone. She focused on the feel of his fingers laced around her own. She could feel his growing anxiety from the slight tremble of his hands. She sighed, cognizant of the truth neither wanted to admit. "Fox," she whispered. "Wherever I go, they'll find me. I think you know that as well as I do. At least if I stay put, we'll have each other. There's really no point in sending me off."
She waited while he mulled over her words. Finally, he sighed and dipped into the crook of her neck. "I was really hoping you wouldn't have a clever argument to counter mine," he mumbled. "I figured flight would beat fight in this instance. Leave it to you to dismantle the pristine logic in my plan."
Y/N could hear a faint smile sounding over the pain in his voice. "It was a stupid plan," she teased.
"That's still to be decided."
Mulder shifted until he caught Y/N's gaze. He placed his hands on either side of her face and slid his fingers delicately over her skin. His touch was warm, his hold firm.
"We'll get through this," he said softly. His words weren't so much a declaration as they were a question; an appeal for a bit of hope in their crisis.
Y/N leaned into his touch. "The two of us," she nodded. "I know it."
Mulder smiled.
He turned back on his heel with a new sense of calm. "It's not like we have an alternative," he said firmly. Y/N watched as he stepped over to the desk and fetched a roll of masking tape from the drawer. He ripped out two strips and joined them to stick an '𝐗' against the window.
Mulder perched on the corner of his bureau and assessed his handiwork. "We'll get by," he affirmed. "They won't get the better of us. Whatever they might think, we won't step down."
Y/N joined Mulder by the window and wrapped her arms around him. "I wouldn't expect anything less from you," she breathed.
The pair stayed silent as they looked out at the night sky. All was quiet for now, but they knew that in time, there would be a steep price to pay for peering beyond the smoke screen. In that moment however, it didn't matter.
Not when they had each other.

X-Files Collector's Edition: Diana Fowl(ey) Play-- Part III: More S5-S6
Diana Fowley S6 (and some S7) fics are here-- some of these are my personal foul favorites~.
Loose chronological order below~!
Canon
@gabby-msr/ScullytoyourMulder's (WBM)
A Simple Office Accessory
""These questions were left unanswered. She supposed she should have brought them up with Mulder but they didn’t really talk about exes. She knew she wasn’t eager to talk about Daniel. Not now, not ever.
She’d put up a professional front in front of the guys; she was - after all - fishing for information on her for work-related reasons. A thousand questions burned her lips, and from the looks on the Lone Gunmen’s faces, she knew that they could see right through her.
She neared the filing cabinets that stored closed cases and paused to consider them.""
The End Scully rifles through the files to dig up Diana's history. What she finds discourages her on many levels.
deslea/Deslea R. Judd's (Ao3)
The Lone Hand (Ao3)
""We were at a nuclear power plant with documented technical difficulties overnight, Agent Spender. I just wanted to be safe."
"Jeffrey. And I notice that didn't stop you from taking a four hour drive after Mulder was apprehended."
"I was restless, Jeffrey," she said, stressing his name a little. "Gunplay does that to me.""
Post The Beginning Jeffrey Spender is sensing something off in Denmark (or in this case, Diana Fowley.) She distracts him with his disgust of Mulder.
Vignettes in 155
""She wants him to know about the path to hell, and about the good intentions that led her there. She wants him to know that she's never killed, never maimed, never betrayed another. She's never sold her body, nor forfeited her soul.
She wants him to know that it can't be stopped. She wants him to know so he will let it happen, not postpone it for a useless month or year. She wants it over for them both. She wants him to let go of the redhead, because the redhead is his fight, his struggle, and she knows she could be his rest.""
A compilation of various characters in One Son saying goodbye to the people they love-- Diana being one of them.
A Woman's Code (Ao3)
""I was pleased when Diana returned from abroad. I never wanted her to leave in the first place. She said it was for the best - that Fox would be safer this way - but she was wrong. We didn't know how wrong until that Scully woman came along.
I knew Scully was trouble the first time I saw her. When she came to me at my husband's funeral to tell me my son was alive. That stupid, interfering woman. She should have let me suffer rather than put him at risk in that way. I knew at that moment that Dana Scully would enable Fox's foolishness, not hinder it. And that was exactly what happened.""
Amor Fati Diana is in tight with Tena Mulder. The two women commiserate over Mulder's condition, and slimily plan ways to circumvent Scully and her silly little ways. It's a bit AU if you (like me) think Mulder's marriage isn't canon.
And So It Ends 1/2
""Need I remind you that it was your idea to bring me here?"
"I have days," he said with a glare, "when I wish I hadn't."
Diana snorted. "That doesn't surprise me. You're your own worst enemy, Alex."
He opened his mouth to point out that people who had to be rescued from assassins shouldn't throw stones, then thought better of it. Their bickering was nothing more than misplaced exhaustion. There was no need to make it worse.""
AU-- S8 Diana mourns Mulder's death while helping Krycek and Marita (who are married) try to save the planet. She also gives them couple's advice.
@scullywolf’s (Ao3)
The Beginning
"He’d just gone off with her, and why wouldn’t he? She didn’t question his beliefs or demand proof before blindly charging off after phantoms in the night. Scully hadn’t forgotten the look in his eyes when she’d told him she didn’t remember what had happened in Antarctica, that she couldn’t corroborate the things he claimed to have seen. He seemed wholly unimpressed that she was trying to maintain her integrity, annoyed even. And maybe it would be easier to just go along with him, to follow where he led even when logic screamed at her that there was still no proof of anything. But she had to try; she owed it to herself to not let her judgment be clouded by the fact that some part of her was still bitterly disappointed they hadn’t been able to finish what they’d started in the hallway outside his apartment, even though another part of her was terrified about what would happen if they did.""
Scully is frustrated with Mulder; but is mildly soothed by Gibson's reassurance about her partner's clear cut feelings about Diana.
The Sixth Extinction II: Amor Fati
""The idea that he could ever, in a million years, turn his back on Scully is nothing short of absurd. As wonderful as it would be to find his sister, to live a life free of monsters and conspiracies, the void left by Scully’s absence would be unbearable. That he could possibly give up on her, on them, falling instead into Diana’s arms with only the barest hesitation, is simply inconceivable. Only a dream has that sort of power, the power to render mundane something so outrageous.""
Scully and a neurologist are both shocked and relieved at how little damage Mulder had from his brain surgery. But celebration is set aside when she is told the news of Diana's murder.
@scullysexual/PostApocolypticAlien's
Following Behind Him (Ao3)
""The guilt still gnawed at him for your ending up here with him. And for the pricey bill Kersh did end up sending your way for the Crump case. He wouldn’t stop breaking the rules, you knew that, but he would try to loosen the collateral damage made towards you.
“Well, have fun.” You try to make it sound as genuine as possible, no hint of snarky or jealously (though you were jealous about him getting to use braincells because you were sure your own were dying from lack of us at this point)
“I’d offer you let you come but…”
“Spending time with Diana doesn’t appeal to me?” you finish for him.
He laughs. “Yeah, something like that.""
Post Drive Scully is not jealous that Mulder is doing cases with Diana, knowing that he still needs that connection to the X-Files.
tiredmoonlight's (known as FandomsandXFiles) Someone Else
""Scully didn’t want to answer, because she trusted this woman about as far as she could throw her, but she had backed herself into a corner. “I went to look for Agent Mulder,” she said. “He needs medical attention.”
Diana’s voice changed. “Is he okay?”
“He will be, but I really need to talk to A.D. Skinner.”
There was silence at the other end of the line. “I’ll see if I can find him.""
Triangle Diana had answered Scully's call for help; but retreats seeing Scully holding Mulder's hand in the hospital.
@alldolleduppink-blog/AllDolledUpPink's
Tangerines - Chapter 6
""Diana stared back at him with a frown. “Fox, the only fruit you consume is the kind that comes in a plastic jug.”
He furrowed his brows in displeasure that she still recognized these type of relevant details about him. He hoped that the same things he knew about her could still be applied or his plan to get the X-Files back was doomed. He enjoyed a cup of orange sugar water now and then but he had changed in other aspects of his life. He was no longer the shell of a man she left behind for better prospects of a career. Mulder still didn't have his sister and he had lost his life’s work, but he was a whole person now.""
Post Triangle Mulder zips by Diana to catch up with Scully, leaving his former girlfriend to sit in her jealousy.
@agentscully/agent_scully2084's Date Night
""Hello Fox,” Fowley said with a polite smile, “Dana.”
Mulder ignored her, and Scully nodded curtly as the pair stepped into the now empty elevator.
Scully stared at her shoes. Mulder pushed the button a little too forcefully and exhaled slowly. Scully placed her hand on Mulder’s forearm and said his name quietly. She looked at him concernedly, her jaw set, eyes wide, eyebrows slightly raised.
“I’m okay, Scully,” he said.
She knew he was lying.""
Post Triangle Mulder is simultaneously avoiding Diana and being shocked at Scully's blatant push to move their relationship to the next level.
odamaebrown's How to ruin your love life
""So, apparently, his type included brunette and blondes, what happen with red haired, Mulder? Had you got a trauma or something?. OK, OK, I know... I am jealous, again, but come on, it is not fair. I have saved his life many times, I have fed his fishes, I convinced him that he will not lost his tongue if he eats vegetable one per week... Shall I dye my hair or what?""
Post Dreamland II Scully is fumingly jealous over Mulder presumably getting his attention consumed by Diana, waitresses, and Kersh's secretary.
@katy-kt-katie/Aliens99's
Movie at Mulder's
""You were all worked up, full of energy when I got there. Don't act like I made you stay up," she teased.
"You didn't seem to mind, just let yourself in."
"Well, you gave me a key."
Then he lifted his hand to her and they did some kind of secret handshake gesture with their thumbs. Diana was absolutely dumbfounded.""
S6 Diana is suspicious of Mulder and Scully's movie nights; but CSM brushes those thoughts aside with a simple devaluation of Scully.
Three Rooms
""Three rooms?” Scully and Mulder said in unison.
“No. There should be four rooms. Can you please check again?” Diana asked, although she didn’t seem as surprised by the accommodations as they did.
“Ma’am, we show your reservation as three queen rooms. I’m sorry to say, but there aren’t any more rooms available as we’re booked solid with a bike tour coming through all week.”
“I guess we‘ll take the three rooms then,” Diana said, with a disappointed sigh, though Scully still wasn’t buying it. “I’m so sorry, Agent Scully. I guess I didn’t get your room added to the reservation.""
S6 Diana baits Mulder onto a case by allowing him to bring Scully. Her attempts to get him alone lead to MSR having to share a room... which leads to a furthering of their relationship.
Diana at the Gunmen's
""Okay, we can help, but you said you are working with Agent Mulder?” Frohike said, placing the brain scans on an illuminated table.
“Of course,” Diana replied.
The three men looked at each other confused.
Byers giggled nervously, “What about Agent Scully?”
“Agent Scully?” Diana repeated, sighing.
“Yes,” Langly said, defensively.""
It appeared this woman, Agent Scully, had admirers in Mulder’s friends too.
AU-- The End Diana takes the scans to TLG instead of Scully, getting her own dose of jealousy.
@choralmeres's (Ao3) It Always Leads To You
""Did they even realize that they leaned towards each other when they walked- as if they were magnets with some kind of gravitational pull? That they’d defensively place their hands on each other?
Or perhaps they were doing it on purpose; maybe Fox had planned it with Agent Scully. Maybe it was his way of payback for her leaving all these years ago. He never seemed like someone who would do that. Perhaps he had changed.""
S6 Diana "loses" her wallet so Mulder will take her to lunch. Her plans turn to dust when she sees Emily's picture in his wallet.
abracadabra's Motives
""With revulsion, she watched the viper attempt to charm the pants off the men who seemed only too eager for her company. As one, they oriented themselves to her, following her words and her movements with hypnotic attention. At one point, the men leaned in closer. It appeared as if their female colleague was about to impart some rather important information by the look on her face and theirs. Instead, they all burst out laughing.
Scully snorted and turned toward the window. Which was why she never heard the brunette approach until she was looming over the booth.""
S6 Scully watches as Mulder distances himself further and further, lying to her and seemingly cavorting with Diana. (Spoilers: It's revealed that he was assigned a crucial mission against his will.)
@leiascully's (Ao3)
Exit Strategy
""Diana had thought he understood.
There had been moments of hope when she’d first returned. She’d baited him with irresistible fragments of truth. She’d murmured to him about visions of the future. Everything had been in place. She’d taken care to secure their positions in the world to come.
And then Dana Scully had stumbled in the hallway and half-collapsed against the wall."'
S6 Diana is angry at her past self for dumping Mulder-- now he's loyal to Scully.
Enemy Territory
""You know, Agent Scully, my name is in a number of those files as the agent of record. Maybe even more than yours.”
“I’m aware of that fact, Agent Fowley,” Scully said. “I’ve corrected quite a few inaccuracies in those reports, and a truly astonishing number of typographical errors. Word processing software has certainly improved since you abandoned the X-Files the first time.”
Mulder swallowed hard. Scully jostled past Diana and into the basement office. Diana glared at him and he tried not to hide behind his file.""
Mulder is trapped in an elevator with Diana and Scully, trying not to get caught in the middle while Scully roasts her nemesis on a spit.
@i-gaze-at-scully’s (Ao3) Pad Thai and poison apples
""They get out together though, naturally, at the basement level. Scully wants to be smug, wants to rub it in Diana’s face that this is her office, her work, her.... she wants to, but she can’t. Not without a nameplate on the door. Or even a desk.
Mulder, for better or for worse, isn’t there. Scully, determinedly ignoring Diana, sits at his desk and begins working on the latest expense report.""
S6 Diana rubs the fact that Mulder invited her to lunch in Scully's face. Even when he forgot the lunch date, Scully has no solace.
o0Stella_Dana0o's The Promises You Can't Keep
""Well, at least it was worth calling Agent Fowley back. I'm glad she's alive." Scully said about to fall asleep.
"What do you mean? Diana was with you." Asked Mulder, confused.
"She was at first yes, but then she told me you needed her there, so she called some backup and she left." She tried to explain despite the fact that she was exhausted. At this moment it clicked in his brain. That's why Scully was alone at the hospital. That's why Diana insisted on going with Scully.""
Mulder detours Scully to help Diana and Jeffrey Spender on a case. He's left, furious, when Diana purposefully leads Scully into danger.
@lotsoforangesoutside/@lotzzoforangezoutside‘s (Ao3)
Apples and Oranges
""Diana watched him and supported his path into the basement, and he thought that was friendship. He even thought so after she left without saying goodbye.
Everyone had their own ambition, he told himself.
And now he was ready to admit and accept that Diana was more than what he knew about, more than the person he had worked with and discovered the X-Files with.""
S6 Mulder compares Scully's spotless loyalty and Diana's twisted one.
@cecilysass‘s (Ao3, Gossamer)
The Kaleidoscope - Chapter 2 (Ao3)
""I ended things with you because of my job. Not because I thought there was something wrong with you, Fox.”
“Hmm.” Mulder nods. “Okay.” There is another pause, and then he adds weakly: “Well, it worked out for the best anyway, huh.”
Some might even say she dodged a bullet, he thought.""
S6 Scully is dating a nice bank dude, upsetting Mulder terribly. Diana calls to make sure he's okay and definitely not to egg him towards her.
The Kaleidoscope - Chapter 4 (Ao3)
""He stares at the messages again, twisting the kaleidoscope absently as he does. They’re all written in Scully’s neat handwriting, recording Diana’s name and time of call, dutifully jotting down each message: “You apparently left your sweater in her car Tuesday evening.”
He imagines the artful way Diana probably described his sweater being left in her car: what details were left out, what details were included. What kind of story she made the forgotten sweater tell. How she might have wielded that in conversation with Scully.""
Mulder is still concerned about that banker dude, so much so he almost gets hit by a truck. In the ensuing course of events, he realizes that Diana had twisted his love life to Scully, making her think he wasn't available.
LuminousPie's
Five Times Mulder Got Injured and One Time Scully Did
""I was just thinking about how many times Mulder has been in the hospital in the last 5 or so years.” She didn’t allude to her own ailments. She suspected Diana already knew.
Diana put down her magazine and crossed her arms, “Is it a lot?”
“I’ve lost count.”
“Mulder was never injured when I was with him.""
Scully is by Mulder's side through his life-threatening injuries, one of which includes Diana trying to shove her away from Mr. Sleeping Beauty.
What Goes Up Must Come Down
""Scully tries not to gag. As much as she doesn’t want to tell anyone about her relationship with Mulder, sometimes she really would like to show off a bit. She imagines wiping Diana’s smile right off her face and rubbing it in.
She’s petty but she’s not mean however. Mostly she just feels sorry for the woman. Her desperate attempts to get Mulder’s attention in the last few months have been embarrassing, especially when she saunters into the bullpen, her hips swinging like a pendulum, her lips painted the brightest of red, to sit on his desk. The slit of her skirt is always designed to show off as much leg as possible. Even today, with her tight ponytail and cleavage popping jacket, it just comes across as silly. Mulder is a visual creature but he’s also myopic and singularly focused. If his attention is on you it isn’t going anywhere else. Diana for all her so-called Mulder wisdom has yet to realize this.""
AUish-- Mulder and Scully are privately dating; but the secret gets out when they and Diana are involved in a horrific elevator accident.
Anne Haynes’s (Gossamer)
12 Tales of Christmas
""I can't catch my breath for a second.
I have to go back in there. I have to go be there for Scully. But when I start for the door, Diana grabs my arm again. "She doesn't want you in there, Mulder. She can't afford to be distracted."
I want to yell at Diana. I want to say, you don't understand! You don't know what you've done to her. But I'm silenced by the secrets between Scully and me. Secrets we never speak.
Silence stretches between Diana and me as we lean against the wall outside the morgue, waiting for Scully to emerge. I suspect that my partner may choose to go out the other way, just to avoid us. I wonder if I should just let her go and lick her wounds alone, away from prying eyes.""
Pre-Tithonus Diana maliciously assigns a baby autopsy for Scully, covering up her intentions to Mulder by establishing trust in her rival's medical assessment. Her exploitation goes over Mulder's head while he ponders on the cracks in his relationship with Scully.
First Day Back (Gossamer)
""I should have called you--"
"I guess you never made it to El Rico."
She shook her head. "I couldn't go without you."
He didn't believe her. But calling her on the lie didn't seem like a prudent thing to do at the moment, so he just gave a slow blink and tilted his head slightly. "That was three days ago. Where have you been?""
Post One Son Mulder is shocked to see Diana in the cafeteria; and is further chagrined by her obvious lies. He draws a line in the sand; and meets up with Scully to apologize. She apologizes in return.
@contrivedcoincidences6/Spooky66/geektime66
Unnamed
""Oh, Agent Scully, is Fox expecting you?” Diana says with a smirk.
Everything inside Scully goes still and cold. Diana’s words echo in her mind and she grasps for a response even though she doesn’t fully understand the words she’s hearing.
“Is that dinner?” Mulder’s voice calls from another room and horror streams through Scully’s veins as fight or flight kicks in.""
Post Tithonus Scully is ready to make moves on Mulder. She is thwarted and heartbroken when she sees Diana in his apartment. Luckily, he's able to clear it all up later.
Cut (Ao3)
""She…Diana… for a long time she was the only person to love me,” Mulder starts as he crouches next to her.
“I’m not ready to say all of that was a lie.”
Scully wipes at her eyes, still refusing to look at him.
“Just because she’s not on your side now doesn’t mean it was all a lie, Mulder. People change. Things happen.""
One Son Mulder promises to look into Diana, trying to mitigate Scully's heavy mistrust.
My Last Testament (FFN)
""Of course it was hard for me to see those women being used for the experiments but I knew that it was necessary for our survival as a species. I knew that someday history would remember these women as the saviors of humanity.
The only time I was called back to the U.S. during my time away was to help take care of a growing problem with Fox. They had assigned him a partner whom they had expected to discredit him.
The moment I saw her credentials and background I knew that they had made a foolish mistake.""
Amor Fati Diana muses on her machinations and excuses.
FridaysAt9's Fort Marlene
""She watches the screens, taking in the two agents, separate yet together in their individual shower stalls. They could have been sent in separately, but together was faster and had the added bonus of allowing Diana to observe their dynamic during a situation that she assumed was unusual for them.
Agent Scully was angry when they had been ushered into the contamination area, but Fox was reserved. Diana watched as he let his partner yell and fight, not stepping in to calm her, but rather letting her work out her frustration as he offered silent support by her side.
On paper, Fox and his partner are complete opposites; one a believer in anything that even hints at the paranormal, the other, bound to science and the laws of nature, rejecting everything her partner believes to be true. Agent Scully had been sent to spy on him so that the high ups within the FBI could shut him down before his quest could become a crusade, but she had instead remained by his side, sharing in his work and continuing his cause.
Diana had hoped it wouldn’t come to this, thwarting their efforts and interfering in their investigations. The quarantine is a little extreme, but she has an objective she needs to follow.""
One Son Diana observes Mulder and Scully in the decon shower, slicing through their dynamic in seconds and expertly erecting road blocks between them.
@mihosayuri/neytirijade's There's No Competition
""Slowly but surely, she’s able to penetrate the defenses Scully built around Mulder, the ones that marked him as hers long before Diana ever returned. But one day, they put the two agents in quarantine.""
One Son Diana loses her mind over the decon shower footage.
@queeenpersephone/light_loves_the_dark's wishbone
""Mulder spots a crown of auburn hair right where Scully had promised she’d be, ignoring Diana’s finger pointing her out on the empty corner. He wants to scoff at the notion she’d spot Scully before him. Scully is his sixth sense, his North Star. Even when they’re at odds, some intrinsic compass inside him is always pointing to her.""
One Son tries to beg Scully to come with him and Diana. She bites back, railing at him for using the "love" word. He follows in her wake.
@thetwoguineabook/sixpences's As Through Fire
""The headlights catch a flash of some animal's eyes at the roadside before it ducks away, and she wonders if Fox will look through the bodies in the hangar for her, call in his partner and her test tubes and speculum to file and categorise blackened remains.
She had been surprised to discover that Fox and his little half-Irish wolfhound really aren't sleeping together; she'd had him fixed on her in '91, as she'd intended, but she never expected to leave such a lasting impression.""
One Son Diana meditates on her cutthroat attitude as she and CSM make their escape.
EPurSeMouve’s Dinner
""The silence is thick after they are left alone, but they both wait until his order arrives. And then it is him who speaks first.
"Tell me what happened."
And, in her cool, soft voice, she does. She tells him of late arrivals and frantic getaways and bodies burning in the rear view mirror. Of running, hiding. Cheap motels and seclusion.""
Post One Son Diana meets Mulder after three weeks. He sees through her lies, mourning her former self.
contradiction_to_nature's (WBM) Stop By Anytime
""It was risky not to call first.
But if she had, he might have told her he could do without the file, that he will just wait until she finds him in the office tomorrow. Manufacturing a reason to drop by is dangerously transparent. She is hoping he won’t notice, or won’t care. She saw light in the window from the street. He’s home.""
Post One Son Diana stops by, ready to seduce; and is shocked that Scully is staying at Mulder's in comfy clothes, unthreatened and matter of fact.
AUs
Flywoman's (Ao3) The Blessed One Bites the Bullet
""Frowning, she slipped her glasses off and rubbed at her eyes, weighing the evidence, and rapidly reaching a conclusion that she didn't like one bit. Then she jumped up, switched off her laptop and shoved it into its case, grabbed her keys, and ran for the door, white terrycloth bathrobe flapping. Normally she would never disturb anyone at this hour, but there was *no time*, and the Lone Gunmen were the only ones who could help her.
No lights were visible under the door when she arrived, hair straggling and blue flannel pajama legs damp from a sudden downpour. She rapped sharply enough to sting her knuckles and then waited, shifting her carrying case from one sore shoulder to the other.""
Crackfic-- Scully wakes TLG in her pajamas, needing their help tracking down info on Diana. Instead, she sympathizes with her youthful movie indiscretions with Duchovny.
Erin M. Blair’s (Ao3)  Discovery Of Samantha
""I had no idea that you know Fox, Dana," Diana replied, to Scully.
"Fox and I had been married for almost a year," Scully replied, as she smiled at her husband. One could see the love that she has for Mulder sparkling in her blue-green eyes. "We are still partners on the X-Files."
"Oh?" Diana replied.""
AU-- S5 Diana thinks she can't get between married parents Mulder and Scully; but Scully STILL has an insecurity streak concerning her. (Also, one of their friends turns out to be Samantha.)
Enjoy!

All Eyes Lead to the Truth | Tunguska (4x08)
Tumblr media
Rats are survivors. Natural born killers who do the work of destructors; by no means impervious, but they’ll attack the weak, anything that stands in their way. They adapt and survive.
Alex Krycek respects that. Maybe it’s why Mulder’s “insult” had felt like a compliment.
Yeah, he’s learned to live like the rats.
And yeah, Mulder. He’s had little trouble adapting.
The relentless agent sits across from him now in this miserable cell, picking at the underside of his boot. Conversation doesn’t really work for them. They’ve been through enough shit together; you’d think he’s earned an iota of trust.
“So,” Alex ventures. “We gonna die here?”
Mulder glowers. “If we ever do get out, I’m gonna kill you myself, Krycek.”
Alex smirks. “I don’t think that’s true.”
“Oh, no?”
“You’ve had a hundred opportunities. You haven’t taken any of them.”
Mulder’s eyes narrow. He says nothing. Spooky Mulder would never deny the truth.
They sit, the faint scratching of roaches and vermin echoing around the cell. Perhaps silence is preferable, but Alex can’t help himself. He wants the upper hand. He needs the upper hand.
And he knows exactly how to get it.
“Whaddya think Scully’s up to?” he asks. Mulder’s eyes dart towards him, then away again. Here we go. As expected, Agent Scully is his trigger. Adapt, Alex.
“Scully, Scully, Scully,” he purrs. “I remember when I met her. She could barely look at me. Like our partnership personally offended her.” He looks at Mulder, trying to make eye contact. “Most agents get a partner or two in their career. Maybe it works out, maybe it doesn’t. They move on. Not you two, though.”
His cellmate remains silent, but now wears  a searing glare.
“We’re gonna die here anyway, Mulder, so you may as well confess. What’s she like, you know… in the sack? Carpet match the drapes?”
If looks could kill, Alex would be a dead man. He thrives off this, off making Mulder squirm. It’s just so fucking easy.
Sometimes he wonders how things would be if he’d just join forces with Mulder. He’s the obvious choice for an ally, morality-wise. But morality isn’t the medium with which Alex paints. He isn’t like Mulder. And anyway, there’s something he relishes more than his admiration of the man: the power Alex wields over him.
Like right now.
Mulder clenches his jaw and looks away, unable to meet Alex’s eye. Once again, his honesty betrays him.
“Are you serious?” Alex’s eyes go wide. He was absolutely certain they were sleeping together. Talk about an X-File. “Shit. You two really had me fooled.”
His incredulity aside, this approach isn’t working. He needs to take a different route to get a rise out of Mulder. Something worse.
“You know,” Alex says, lowering his voice. “Back when she was abducted, I suggested just… killing her.” Mulder bristles. “They underestimated your determination, but I never did. I warned them you’d never stop. They didn’t listen.”
A loud clang comes from somewhere in the gulag. A horrific scream.
“Guess there’s still time,” Alex shrugs. “They don’t make the same mistake twice.”
That does it. Mulder lurches across the cell and wraps his hands around Alex’s neck for the second time today. There’s rage in his eyes, a primal savagery. And Alex likes it. He isn’t even sure why he does this, why he wants it. Maybe it’s the kind of thing he needs to feel alive. To feel like he isn't alone in the dark.
Like he does on occasion, he thinks of the missile silo. Mulder would probably like that story. But he doesn’t seem to be in the mood for talk. His arm is jammed beneath Alex’s chin, pinning him against the wall. He can feel his airway closing, but he knows it won’t last. Mulder will let him go.
“Don’t ever say her name to me again,” Mulder seethes. For a wild moment it feels like they might kiss, and it’s not the first time he’s felt that way. There's an undeniable energy between them. Maybe it’s the knowledge there’s no one on the planet he hates more. Maybe Mulder’s passion is contagious.
Maybe they’re both just animals.
As expected, Mulder lets him go with a ceaseless penetrating glare. Their little game is over for now; at least, until they play another one.
They sit on opposite sides of the cell for hours until dinner is served. He and Mulder spit out the roach-infested soup in temporary camaraderie, but then a guard makes his way inside, and Alex takes his shot. He’s got one play left and he’s going to use it, no matter the cost.
The guard hesitates. Mulder asks for a translation, understandably concerned. Alex replies honestly: “That I want to see his supervisor.”
If he doesn’t want to see you, you’ll be accountable, the guard replies in Russian. He appears taken aback, unaccustomed to a prisoner's authoritative tone.
I’ll be accountable, Alex insists. Mulder dumbly looks back and forth between them.
The guard acquiesces, and opens the door. Freedom lies ahead if he can play this correctly, if he can just find one more dark pipeline to squeeze through. Maybe he’ll get out of this shithole alive after all.

As he’s escorted from the gulag, he’s taken past Mulder’s cell again. He peers inside where his adversary awaits whatever fate Alex’s defection has unleashed. There’s a slight twinge of regret inside him, but it quickly passes.
He steps outside as the chilled air of Tunguska slaps him in the face. Beneath him, a rat scampers by, disappearing into the woodwork.
