Two women are suing Apple over its AirTags, claiming the trackers made it easier for them to be stalked and harassed.
The women filed a class-action lawsuit Monday in the U.S. Northern District Court of California and said Apple has not done enough to protect the product from being used illicitly.
Apple introduced AirTags in 2021. They retail for $29 and work by connecting to iPhones and iPads via Bluetooth. They have been billed as a close-range alternative to the company's built-in Find My technology, which provides an approximate location.
"What separates the AirTag from any competitor product is its unparalleled accuracy, ease of use (it fits seamlessly into Apple's existing suite of products), and affordability," the lawsuit says. "With a price point of just $29, it has become the weapon of choice of stalkers and abusers."
One plaintiff alleges after divorcing her ex-husband, he left an AirTag in her child's backpack. She attempted to disable it, but found another one soon after, she said in the lawsuit.
The other plaintiff, identified as Lauren Hughes, said after ending a three-month relationship with a man, he began calling her from blocked numbers, created fake profiles to follow her social media accounts and left threatening voicemails.
Hughes says she was living in a hotel while planning to move from her apartment for her safety. When she arrived at her hotel, she received an alert that an AirTag was near her. She later located it in the wheel well of one of her back tires. Once Hughes moved to her new neighborhood, the man posted a picture of a taco truck in her vicinity with "#airt2.0," the complaint says.
Apple does send users an alert if an unfamiliar AirTag is located near them. But the notification is not immediate and is only available on devices with iOS software version 14.5 or later, which excludes some older Apple devices. The consequences could be fatal, the complaint alleges.
Soon after the AirTag launched, domestic abuse advocates and technology specialists warned Apple the product could easily be compromised, according to the complaint.
"AirTag was designed to help people locate their personal belongings, not to track people or another person's property, and we condemn in the strongest possible terms any malicious use of our products," Apple said in February.
The women are seeking a trial with a jury and no monetary damages.

Lil started preschool this week, which has been great! except she wasn't routed in time for the bus (which is in her iep) which sucked. So there was a lot of farting around, Peanut being late to school, and grandparents stepping up to bat to help get Pea to school while I took Lil to school because their schools are twenty minutes apart.
But she starts the bus on Monday, and I'm just... super nervous, and worried, and anxious. Because she'll be on it in the morning for almost an entire hour! I feel like that's a lot of time to be stuck on a bus in a car seat with no one you know at three years old?! The ride home is only a half hour long, which is much much better, but still... just super worried.
She is totally loving school (even though they don't attend Wednesdays) and is only there for two and a half hours but, with this bus stuff, will be gone from the house for four hours. That's a long time for a little bun! So now I'm frantically researching airtags and stuff just because I'm so nervous and like... yeah. I don't know. If you use an airtag to keep track of your bus kids (or something similar) what do you think? Is there a better way?
I'm just nervous. An hour seems like a long fucking time to be stuck on a bus. And I can't give her like, a book or something, because she's too young to guarantee putting it in her backpack at the end of the drive you know? And that's obviously not something the bus driver needs to be worried about, with a bus full of preschoolers that are all on ieps... ugggghhh.
I'm just so nervous for her. Hopefully she's fine and I'm worried about nothing.

Sounds like the care is the least of her problems with this guy. I bet she has tried to break up with him then he responds with a “poor me”

Love Is in the AirTag
Every girl needs a BFF who can give it to them straight about their life choices.
“Babe, how long until we get to Santa Barbara?” asks Margot from the passenger seat, reapplying lip gloss. “I want to start our girls’ weekend already!”
“Like at least another hour” I laugh whilst driving. “Relax, the karaoke bars ain’t going anywhere.”
My bestie smiles, staring out the window as our car whizzes past the scenic California orchards.
“Yeah...it’s just that I told Heath I’d let him know when we arrived.”
I avert my eyes from the road to raise my eyebrows at my friend.
“Oh come on, Jane!” she protests, her tone defensive. “You know how it is with boyfriends. He’s just protective.”
“Hmmm, no, I don’t recall anything in the dating handbook about guys needing to know their girlfriends’ exact itineraries” I answer judgmentally. “Seriously, next you’ll be telling me this dude’s tracking your location or something...”
An awkward silence follows, leaving only the hum of the radio.
“What the fuck, Margot? Heath’s tracking you?!”
“No, it’s not like that!” Margot argues. “Heath’s just paranoid about items getting lost, so he bought some Apple AirTags to put on my stuff”.
I gasp, shaking the steering wheel.
“Margot! Do you have any idea how dangerous that is?!”
“Wh-what’s so dangerous about it?” stammers Margot, her assured resolve slipping.
“Anyone can track your AirTags using an iPhone. It’s creepy! Your boyfriend or any other rando could’ve been following us this whole time! How many tags do you have?”
“Um, let’s see...there’s one on my wallet, my keychain, my suitcase and my jacket.”
My eyes scope the rear-view mirror.
“Quick, give them here!”
Margot starts gathering the plastic white discs from her possessions. One by one, I frantically pitch the AirTags out the open window into the speeding gravel, each shattering on impact.
After the last one is destroyed, I breathe a sigh of relief and wind the window up.
“Sorry, Jane” Margot apologizes. “I didn’t know all that. Maybe Heath isn’t good news after all.” Yawning, she starts to nod off. “Thanks for being a good friend. Wake me in Santa Barbara.”
As Margot naps, I turn my gaze from the gorgeous sunset in the windscreen to my sleeping friend—an even more beautiful sight.
If only she knew how much I’ve always loved her. If only she could appreciate women instead of ugly men. Well, she won’t have that option any longer.
With a smirk, I pluck her still-illuminated phone from her hands and erase its contents, tossing it out the window like the AirTags. By the time we reach the isolated cabin, she’ll be too far from civilization to escape.
And her caring, completely harmless boyfriend won’t be able to find and rescue her.
Every girl needs a BFF.
But this girl needs a girlfriend.
