I wonder... is Hypergryph aware of the power they have given W with her design?

Look at her. Look at this simple yet effective color pallet of mostly grey, white, black and red highlights. In comparison to other Operators her outfit is also fairly simple (other OPs sometimes feel like onions where you can peel the clothes off of them for ages and still find more) and it still looks fashionable and comfortable to wear.

What's more: W is distinct. Even outside of Arknights there is no character who comes close to how she looks. She is instantly recognizable.

I have 1 fear... that one day, when the AK anime drops and introduces a broader audience to Arknights and by extend W, that she will surpass Arknights all together. That she becomes something more powerful. That she becomes... an anime profile picture.

W is a great fit for any weeb to pick and use as an icon, to declare her as "their wife", just because of the amount of smug, evil girl power and style she radiates - while at the same time none of them even know what Arknights is supposed to be.

Take Riamu from Idolmaster for example. I don't know shit about Idolmaster. But I know this character and the skeleton bone shirt, just because - yet again - simple and effective design, unmistakable and looks cute. The only difference to W is, that W fills a different niche.

I don't use Twitter or Reddit so, honestly, this might have already happened to some extent and I'm just being really, reeeeally slow again (because there already is an abundance of W fanart out there).

But this frightens me because W is so much more than a brilliant design. She's a brilliantly written character too. And so many people using her as an icon without actually understanding what she's about... well, it doesn't exactly make me mad, but it makes me sad because I don't feel it does her justice.

Freya is a polite, though typically reserved girl upon first impressions despite her pleasant demeanour. Her oddly formal manner of speaking and noticeable control over her tone and facial expression often are described as creepy or insincere amongst some of her peers and acquaintances — Freya acknowledges this as a way to put distance between her and others. Whether she sees this as a defensive mechanism or to exert superiority over others isn’t clearer-cut and seems to depend on the individual’s interpretation. As she’s foreign to Japan, she struggles with the use of honorifics and her language structures can be rather stiff when not communicating in English; this further attributes to her formal syntax and general reserved nature as she fears being judged for such an incapability or being seen as anything less than intelligent.

She’s quick to judge others, and can jump to rash conclusions due to her anxious nature and subsequent overthinking — though she only shares these points when relevant and is never directly accusatory; she can still be rather passive-aggressive. She doesn’t seem to have an intuitive knowledge of socialisation, and instead relies upon psychological theory and personal experiences to analyse or imitate someone’s behaviour and act accordingly. Freya is beyond competent in this field, and claims that the way she learned to analyse emotions and words was a heavy contributor to her becoming the Ultimate Orator despite the initial shortcomings of her predisposition.

When learning to trust those around her, the polite “perfect” image of herself quickly crumbles and she starts to express herself in a more passionate manner, her way of speaking much looser to the point of it bordering on nonsensical as her mind thinks faster than she speaks. Freya is an enjoyer of bad puns, pop culture, cooking, the arts, true crime, and the occult — much of which she speaks in great detail when comfortable. To those she’s close to, she is protective, loyal, and thoughtful towards, but also very sensitive to if she thinks she’s done something wrong. When her guard is down, she’s really just a naïve and excitable child who’s rather loving and affectionate when appropriate.

Her lonely, pressured upbringing makes her rather sympathetic to her childhood friend though later “rival”, Byakuya — being able to gain an understanding of human connection and sympathy through one another’s similarities and differences to upbringings/ experiences that are on “different sides of the same coin”. Later, they grow closer to then become lovers (though in Trial 2 Mo//nokuma remarks Byakuya always harboured a protective and softer instinct when it came to her). Their understanding of one another and their inherit differences catalyse growth in each other, having an intimacy where they emotionally heal together from traumatic family upbringing.

Freya was only scouted as an Ultimate due to H//ope’s Pe//ak scouting Byakuya — as upon recognising him they learned of her being his academic rival for a period at their former high school.

Her and Byakuya are one of the two pairs to attended the same former high school, the other being Sakura and Peko.

Freya makes many references to pop-culture in her later F//TE’s and school mode interactions. Though some are from popular anime (Dra//gon Ba//ll, Poké//mon, etc.) most are from Western shows such as St//ar Wa//rs, St//ar Tr//ek, and Do//ctor Who.

She is the only character in the franchise with naturally curly hair, though it is said she straightens the tops of her tendrils and sets her hair in a particular way when she sleeps. In a F//TE she mentions that she spends too much time braiding/ doing her hair up and grows frustrated at how it never quite meets her standards of neatness regardless of her efforts.

—> She states many people want to see what her hair looks like out, but her perfectionistic attitude and sensory issues deny that request. It’s implied her family says this, though Byakuya is inferred to having an interest when she recalls him giving her curling mousse and never giving an explanation: “He just stared blankly at me without talking, but I’ve known him long enough to know it’s a bit of an affectionate look for him.”. Her hair is inches below her waist straightened.

She is confirmed to wear light and simple makeup and has minor skin issues. Many of her F//TEs allude to a strong insecurity in her looks despite how she’s had positive reception towards her appearance.

Like Byakuya, she hates inappropriate subject matter.

She is commented on having large “doe” eyes, though due to stylistic limitations this doesn’t show clearly.

Do you think Lonnie is obsessed with her mother?

That depends on what you describe 'obsessed' as.

But in my personal opinion, no. Not really.

Look, I know she talks about her mom alot compared to other characters but that's easy to explain away.

She's the child of two warriors, who grew up up surrounded by several warriors and their wives. She comes from a traditional culture that can be a bit overbearing as seen in the Mulan movie and as in seen in many posts about families/places in that culture.

So assuming that she grew up there at least for a few years before moving to Auardon than that alone would have given her some problems with her identity as a not entirely feminine young lady.

And then she moves to Auardon where gendered sports are a thing and where female sports apparently don't exist even though that Fencing (which can't be too different from Swords and Shields) is as far as I'm aware a non gendered sport.

She was expected to act a certain way by teachers and her peers. And while it wasn't a big deal most of the time because she is feminine too, it did cause some conflicts for her growing up.

In theory at least.

And Lonnie, who seems to be going to school at a boarding school where her brother no longer attends probably had issues coming to term with who she was as a person. Probably had trouble coming to terms with her conflicting cultural beliefs and personality.

She's feminine yes. But she also loves sword fighting and sparring and hip hop and a ton of other non feminine things that kids would be cruel about (speaking from experience).

And being away from home wouldn't help. Especially after her brother graduated.

So, my theory is that Lonnie brings up her mom alot for a lot of reasons. Not only because she misses her but because she's everything Lonmie wants to be and because she's a convent throw away excuse to use whenever Lonnie has to defend the way she is.

Her mom is confident. Her mom is well liked. Her mom is strong and funny and nurturing and doesn't need to be feminine to get by. Her mom is beautiful without trying.

And part of Lonnie wants to be that.

But another part doesn't want to throw away her femininity.

Lonnie wants to be both. She wants to be all that and more.

She wants to be confident and strong and nurturing and funny but feminine as well. She wants to be accepted for who she is. For every side of her. For every part of her.

And until that can happen without people questioning her, without people dismissing her or accusing her of wanting to be special/wanting attention she will continue to bring up her mom.

Because no one really thinks twice about a kid wanting to be like their mom or dad. About a kid bringing their parent up as a reason for wanting to do something.

Plus, Lonnie wants to make her mom proud of her. So of course she'd bring her up alot. But no, she's not obsessed.

She just has a good relationship with her mother who she wants to make proud and issues with her identity because traditional places and sometimes even non traditional places aren't always accepting of people who are different.

Genshin Twitter is genuinely insane they cannot stop picking fights with other gacha game fandoms.

Every week I see a tweet where genshin fans are quote tweeted into oblivion because they are terminally online. They are so stuck in their bubble of ‘Genshin is the best and any criticism or statement of someone enjoying one thing over genshin is a personal attack against me’.

This week some person, in response to someone calling Ayato’s design lifeless to their own opinion, and compares it to an Arknights character that they like.

Instead of ignoring the tweet -which was one of many in replies to a criticism to the reveal of a Sumeru enemy npc, which featured a much buffer body type than any that was available to a playable character, alongside a noticeably darker skin tone- they felt the need to defend Ayato, who, by looking at their profile, wasn’t even a favorite of theirs?

Specifically they called the character’s, who’s called Goldenglow, design quote “shit . Just a bunch of random design choices thrown together meanwhile ayato derives inspiration for the actual Meiji era of feudal Japan. But sure “lifeless” end quote. This in of itself is something that would be worth a couple dozen quote retweets, but meaningless in the end. It’s what they say next that sparks almost 2,800 quote retweets.

Quote “Like, the AK character design is just blatant hypersexualization for the sake of pandering to horny teenagers meanwhile Ayato has actual thought and inspiration put into it. You really thought this was a good comparison huh?” End quote.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Goldenglow, this is her design.

She’s just wearing a short skirt and thing highs. That’s the only thing that stands out that could be seen as sexual. And it’s not even close to the focus of the art here. And that tweet blows up.

People are are comparing Genshin and Arknights characters, pointing out that oftentimes it’s *Genshin* that sexualizes it’s characters, with Mona being the main example used.

I have never seen the Arknights fandom be so bloodthirsty. In my experience, the Arknights fandom doesn’t usually get involved with drama like this. They seem comfortably in the “if you aren’t a fan that’s okay, just don’t bash.” type mindset. They aren’t afraid to poke fun at themselves either, and usually have a decent sense of humor. Most of Arknight’s drama centers around the devs and specific content creators.

I realize that Genshin has many young fans, and is a young fandom in of itself, but they need to learn that you can’t escalate every little criticism or opinions that disagree with your own. If someone responds with “I think this character’s design is pretty lifeless, I like this character from this game instead.” You cannot escalate it to “how DARE you say that?! Because HER design is HYPERSEXUAL!” You can always, always ignore it. And if you want to make your opinion known, keep it civil. “I disagree with you. I think her design is way too busy, I like my character because even though it’s simple, there’s still plenty to enjoy.”

And if you do have a Bad Take and get ratio’d into oblivion, try not to double down. Just slink back and lick your wounds so to say.

To keep in example with the catalyst of this post, this same person keeps doubling down. They’ve even gotten into some mild slutshaming in their replies. There was some art someone drew of three Arknights characters beating up Ayato, I’m pretty sure like the last panel as the one jojo meme where a guy sips some wine before joining the beat down. Clearly more of a joke than any actual malice behind it. Someone comments, quote, “This is what you get for calling Goldenglow design hypersexualized. It’s like calling someone’s little sister a hoe.” End quote. I genuinely don’t know much about Goldenglow, I stopped playing Arknights a good while ago. But from what I glean, she just wants to be a fashion designer, and struggles to control the electric powers she has. A wholesome, if slightly sad character. And of course, their response is, quote, “if your little sister is out wearing stockings with lingerie straps and a shirt ass skirt, I’ma call her and YOU a hoe. The fuck you on about ? 🤨” end quote.

Just by scrolling through the replies they make, anytime someone seems to mention them, or respond to them in a way they deem unacceptable to leave alone, they need doubling down. Keeps saying they’re right. Attacks people. To one tweet they responded, quote, “I’m literally in y’alls head rent-free.” End quote.

But I think the most ironic part of this all, with how they came after one character for being “hypersexualized”, is the fact they retweet anime girls with the boobs very very visible, with oftentimes the focus being on the boobs, or attention drawn to the boobs. Even twiters automatic crop seems to favor the boobs with some of these retweets.

I also took the effort not to mention or add screenshots of the tweets, mainly so people are less likely to waste their time on this, and to also make this more accessible for those with screen readers. I’ll do my best with the image alt image description feature as well, but I don’t promise quality.

This post isn’t here to spread drama, mainly to point out how often Genshin Twitter starts stirring the pot, and maybe convince people that they should practice ignoring and blocking more when they disagree with someone online.

"Entry Point for new readers"? Oh bloody hell.

First of all, not a good sign that he has to create a new entry point yet again. Phase 2 was a new entry point. AK was. And now this. Perhaps he wouldn't constantly need new readers if he was able to keep the old ones.

Second, if it's meant as a new entry point I assume that means the plot twists aren't gonna get mentioned. The two big ones that come to mind rn are the Skul is Lord Vile reveal and the second is that China helped kill Skul's family.

This annoys me bc instead of being mainly for old fans this is getting used for new readers yet again. Remember how he had the excuse to keep the character profiles out of the Grimoire to not spoil new readers? I'm afraid that him not wanting to spoil new readers yet again is gonna affect his writing negatively.

I feel like arknights did the same thing for this event’s writer

it’s just...really typical? like really of course they have a duet assigned just to them of course it turns out they’re secretly childhood friends and didn’t remember of course they’re doomed because they’ll literally kill everyone if they’re together like...they actually said “there’s only one bed.” how many more tropes can you fit in tho for that one specifically i feel like kreide probably still ended up sleeping on the floor. rip

so it’s kind of? charming?? baby’s first yaoibait (????) but anyway because it’s so typical i couldn’t take anything too seriously... like i enjoyed reading it enough but i just found everything really funny including the very sad™️ death which... probably not intended. maybe i’m too irony poisoned or something...

anyway outside the goatboy tragedy...czerny was more interesting than i expected? I didn’t even realize he was a major character before oops. the whole deal with being leithanien’s only recognized infected musician so he has to keep giving things up to help the others...that seems to be the theme with him doesn’t it. he has to give up his privacy(?) to promote Morgen und Abend, then all his copyrights to get hospitals to treat infected, then eventually was even going to give up his life for eben and kreide. they don’t really dwell on it much but even at RI he donates most of what he earns... like yeah he’s a really nice guy but it seems like being the only infected in his position probably makes him feel like he has to be the one who does this for everyone else’s sake. which is tragic in its own way...dude please be a little more selfish. but this is a pretty realistic thing...

Oh yeah and I’m disappointed carnelian wasn’t here. like when i heard a leithanien event announced on stream that’s all i was waiting for and nope... please god let her be in the next one she desperately needs story. but this isn’t actually related to the event story

anyway my one real gripe… hibiscus…

why did she even get an alt. like you could replace her in this event with some npc and practically nothing would change...

the previous ones... lava being in who is real follows from her bond with nian, and kroos is A1 so yea she tags along, then gets an alt later... but why is hibiscus in leithanien. who knows. and you can see how lava and kroos have changed but hibiscus didn’t seem to change all that dramatically, yet they still dangle this ooh something terrible happened in her profile like Yes Okay I Know either tell us exactly or shut up this is the third time you’ve done this

well they had sarkaz racism and also immediately dropped it...speaking of that that’s something i’ve never liked. oripathy discrimination works (sometimes) because it doesn’t really have a clean real-world analogue, but this... hmm with the whole stealing blood thing this event they obviously seem to be making this an analogue to antisemitism. which... okay but the sarkaz are literally devils. like they got shapeshifters and vampires and are also most of the major enemy types... that’s not good...?

idk i didn’t like the victoria taran thing for a similar reason. and then there’s how ursus hates catgirls and victoria maybe looks down on zalak from this random throwaway line just. why???

aegir in iberia is the only time ak has done this decently because they don’t try to make some stupid reason like actually they tried to take over the world 200 years ago, it’s just xenophobia amplified by the church picking a scapegoat after the Silence. and they use this interestingly sometimes with how the cult preys on vulnerable people. also aegir are from fuckn atlantis so they can’t make bad analogues thankfully

everything else has been stupid and pointless or just Bad

(liberi in laterano are a whole other deal with the angel hivemind thing, it’s more just non-sankta there anyway which is a bit different... i talk too much already let’s not get into this one...)

I’ve always really liked kroos, and fang and beagle by extension, and then lava after who is real... but hibiscus just makes me feel nothing. she’s just a medic who works hard and has her 1 gimmick of making terrible food. and i wanna like all of A1 so i don’t like that

at least they made a point of how she doesn’t know how to play the flute because looking at her e2 yeah i can tell STOP HOLDING IT LIKE THAT !! (but also her class doesn’t make much sense i don’t remember there being any big moment in the story where she decides to use her arts offensively... it’s mentioned in one of her voicelines tho so i might have missed it????)

With the recent event reruns for Arknights and Fate/Grand Order, I’ve been thinking about how they compare and what I like about each! As of writing this the event for Arknights, Mansfield Break, has just finished it’s rerun and there’s one more day for the FGO Las Vegas event. I somehow managed to get the free character from both and my experience with each was vastly different due to just how each game handles events.

Firstly, they’re both gachas so with the reruns of the events came the reruns of their respective rate-up banners, i.e. the Solo Mountain Banner for AK and the Summer Servants Banner for FGO. I play both on the Global/NA/EN/whatever you wanna call it server so I have the benefit of foresight on whether or not I should save up for certain upcoming events. The main difference there being global on AK is behind by about 6 months and NA for FGO is behind by about 2 years. Personally I feel like 6 months is the perfect amount of delay to plan out my gacha currency usage and 2 years is just way way too far ahead for my liking.

As far as events go Arknights has Side Stories, Intermezzi, and Vignettes. Side Stories are exactly what it says on the tin and Intermezzi are just more relevant to the main story, going into the backstory of characters and groups like the Abyssal Hunters. Vignettes are like a collection of stages and you can use the event currency you get from them to buy mini stories to read. All of these come with a free operator (most of the time) that can also be earned by completing certain stages, typically about halfway through the story, and upgrading by spending event currency. None of these need any sort of story progress like being caught up to Chapter 9 or something like that. If you miss an event in AK it feels very forgiving because the stages are added to the Side Story and Intermezzi sections and are playable at any time and still give rewards like Originite Prime. FGO is only recently getting this from what i understand with the Main Interludes, but those need Rare Prisms which can be spent on other things like Mystic Codes whereas Arknights has a separate resource used only to unlock previously unplayed Side Stories that you get for free once a week. There’s also the relatively new Record Restoration in AK which allows people who missed events or just didn’t get all the copies of an Operator from the store to obtain/max out that respective Operator and other goodies. This combined with playing on Global and being able to guess what is getting its respective Restoration when is so nice and just doesn’t have this extreme FOMO feeling of “I NEED to get this Operator NOW and ALL of their copies” because I can just finish the stages later and the only thing I miss out on are some Medals.

Speaking of which the medals are a nice way to show of things that you’ve done in AK and add a nice touch of personality to each profile. I’m not too aware of things that FGO gives for challenge quests besides things like summon tickets, Crystallized Lore, and other upgrade materials, but I like being able to show off my accomplishments in-game. I also feel that FGO has waaaayyy more to farm with regards to materials than Arknights. Arknights has a few EXP cards and LMD, similar to Leveling Cards and QP in FGO, but in regards to the actual materials you can buy it feels that FGO has a lot more that are easier to get without worrying about having enough for other things in the shop. Neither has every material available in the shop, but it helps being able to just farm for the Free Servant in FGO and use the currency that i got from doing that to buy materials to upgrade their skills and the skills of my other Servants.

Both have their merits that FGO is a lot more drawn out, at some points too much so and Arknights is very relaxed but it’s very easy to do the whole thing in one day and burn out. However Arknights stage design is very replayable and event stages even lean towards using Operators that are either on rate up for that event or the free Operator that you get from playing.
