In May, a group called Accountable Tech, which calls itself a "small nonprofit taking on Big Tech companies," organized a corporate boycott to protest Elon Musk's bid to buy Twitter. In the midwest, a group called Opportunity Wisconsin, which bills itself as a "coalition of Wisconsin residents," ran a deluge of TV ads slamming Republican senator Ron Johnson for his tax policies. And in Arizona, an organization of "grassroots racial justice" activists called Just Democracy released a video blasting Democratic senator Kyrsten Sinema for failing to support the Biden administration's legislative agenda.
None of these groups actually exist. They are all registered trade names for the North Fund, a shape-shifting nonprofit group that uses aliases to push an array of left-wing causes from a shell office in Washington, D.C., according to corporate records.
Political watchdogs say the fund, which isn't required to disclose the donors behind its $66 million budget, is gearing up to be one of the most consequential dark-money players of the midterm elections. And while "astroturf" groups are nothing new in politics, critics say the North Fund is part of a new breed—moving away from specific policy advocacy and delving into electoral politics.
The North Fund, which was founded in 2018, is helmed by a handful of Democratic operatives, including former Clinton aide Jim Gerstein. It operates under at least eight trade names, according to D.C. corporate records, including "51 for 51," a group pushing for statehood for the heavily Democratic District of Columbia, and the "Voting Rights Lab Action," which advocates for voting policy reforms favorable to Democrats.
Under the guise of "Opportunity Wisconsin," the group has poured $4 million into negative TV advertising against Johnson, making it one of the top-spending outside groups in the state. Through another alias, the "Democracy Docket Action Fund," the nonprofit has helped finance state-level redistricting lawsuits that favor Democrats across the country. And the "Accountable Tech" boycott campaign, which seeks to pressure Twitter to restrict speech from conservative outlets and Republican politicians, has received international news coverage.
The North Fund received $66 million in 2020, according to its public tax disclosures, nearly all of it from large contributors. Over 93 percent came from donors giving over $1 million.
While the North Fund doesn't disclose the names of its contributors, it is required to report the donation amounts. Americans for Public Trust was able to trace some of the funding using grant data from other nonprofits.
Sutherland found that the North Fund received $19.3 million from the Sixteen Thirty Fund and over $11 million from the New Venture Fund, two organizations that share an address in D.C. Similar to the North Fund, the groups operate under at least 50 trade names—including "Fix Our Senate," "Floridians for a Fair Shake," and the "Voter Engagement Fund."
However, the Sixteen Thirty Fund and the New Venture Fund don't disclose their donors either, leading to a dead end in the money trail.
The North Fund declined to comment on its funding relationships or its use of trade names. The group told the Free Beacon that it "follows all disclosure requirements related to the disclosure of individual donors and grantees."
Despite its large budget and impact, the North Fund has almost no physical footprint. When the Free Beacon visited its office in downtown D.C.—a co-working rental space managed by the company Carr Workplaces—the front desk manager said the North Fund uses the address but doesn't maintain a presence there. "I'm not sure where they're actually located," he said.
The North Fund is managed by a Democratic consulting firm called Arabella Advisors, which also keeps the copies of the fund's public financial documents, according to the fund's tax disclosure records. Nonprofit groups are required to provide physical copies of these records to members of the public who request them in person, a spokesperson for the IRS told the Free Beacon.
But at Arabella's office building in D.C., the lobby receptionists told the Free Beacon they were under strict orders from the firm to turn away all outside visitors.
When the Free Beacon stopped by the listed D.C. address for the Sixteen Thirty Fund and the New Venture Fund—the North Fund's primary donors—their cavernous, full-floor office suite was deserted.
The groups had recently moved out, leaving just a couple of office chairs, the logo for Arabella Advisors emblazoned on the floors, and a piece of paper taped to a radiator that read, "Loose Lips Sink Ships."

For those who know how to read them, the signs have long been there. Like the towering mound of 20 million oyster shells all but obscured by the lush greenery of central Florida’s Gulf Coast. Or the arcing lines of wave-weathered stone walls strung along British Columbia’s shores like a necklace. Such features, hidden in the landscape, tell a rich and varied story of Indigenous stewardship. They reveal how humans carefully transformed the world’s coasts into gardens of the sea -- gardens that produced vibrant, varied communities of marine life [...]. And in certain places, like on the west coast of North America in what is now Washington state and where the Swinomish are building a new sea garden, these ancient practices are poised to sustain them once again.
“I see it as a way for our people to be reconnected to our place, to be reconnected to each other, and to have a purpose, to have a responsibility that goes beyond us,” says Alana Quintasket (siwəlcəʔ) of the Swinomish Tribal Senate.
---
Across the planet, Indigenous communities, from the Heiltsuk in British Columbia, to the Powhatan on the Chesapeake Bay on the United States’ Atlantic Coast, to the Māori in New Zealand, have successfully stewarded the sea [...]. These communities avoided diminishing their productive sea gardens despite, in some cases, seeing harvests that rival modern commercial fisheries.
The scale of historical Indigenous oyster gardening, for instance, cannot be overstated. On America’s southeastern Atlantic coast, in the modern states of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida, Indigenous peoples whose descendants include the Muscogee built gargantuan monuments out of oyster shells. These structures could reach 30 meters high or more. [...]
In 2004, scientists studying historical overfishing published a study showing how, starting around the 19th century, oyster stocks suffered a “moving wave of exploitation” that traveled down the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of North America and the eastern coast of Australia. The capitalist commercial fisheries that arrived with European colonization and settlement, Rick says, undid thousands of years of sustainable prosperity. “Within 50 years, 100 years, maybe even less in some areas, they’ve depleted that stock.” But to Rick, that modern narrative of rampant decline is only part of the story. [...] To fill in the rest of the story, Rick assembled a diverse, multidisciplinary team of researchers to revisit the history of oyster fishing in the same places [...].
---
The work adds to scientists’ growing understanding of the diversity and value of Indigenous approaches to marine stewardship. Like the oyster gardens, similar systems show up again and again around the world, from Native Hawaiian loko i‘a (fishponds) and Haida Gwaii naw náaGalang (octopus houses) to the shi hu (stone fish traps) of Taiwan and corrales de pesca (fish traps) of Patagonia. These and other examples are being cataloged by a broad collaboration, known as the Pacific Sea Garden Collective, that is working to map this diversity of Indigenous sea gardening innovations across the Pacific Ocean.
In her own work studying historical Indigenous clam gardens on the North American west coast, which date back at least 3,500 years, Anne Salomon, an applied marine ecologist at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, has noted some of the key techniques that led to these bountiful yet restrained returns. People would till the sediment, replenish shells in the water, and construct low intertidal rock terraces that flatten the shoreline and expand the farmable area. [...]
---
To Salomon, who is involved in the Pacific Sea Garden Collective, the intensive nature of some Indigenous sea gardens is fundamentally different from the maximum sustained yield mindset of today’s capitalist commercial fisheries. Archaeological evidence, paired with Indigenous oral histories, Salomon says, shows how by focusing on common reciprocal, relationship-based principles and governance practices — ones that sustain individuals, communities and their environments — Indigenous communities often made decisions that led to huge harvests while also putting some limits on the scale at which that intensification was happening.
These gardening efforts included a continuum of features, such as seasonal or size limits on harvest, that may be invisible to the eye, Salomon says. And as Marco Hatch, a member of the Samish Indian Nation and a marine ecologist at Western Washington University who was involved in Rick’s study of oyster gardens points out, “These features aren’t just physical features, they’re cultural features and spiritual features.” [...]
---
Inspired by sea garden restorations led by Indigenous communities in British Columbia, the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community has just received permits to start raking sediment and rolling rocks at a site on its traditional tidelands on Kiket Island, roughly 125 kilometers north of Seattle. For years, tribal members were chased away with guns and dogs and prevented from harvesting in the area, says Swinomish tribal member and shellfish community liaison Joe Williams (Squi qui). “It’s a very special time for us to be able to reacquaint with this particular location,” he says.
This sea garden should help address recent declines of butter clams, littleneck clams and Olympia oysters, and help those populations adapt to climate change. Historically, Indigenous peoples would shift the locations of clam garden rock walls as sea levels changed. Gardens also protect clams against ocean acidification and potentially against extreme temperatures.
---

Kaiju Week in Review (June 11-17, 2023)
youtube
Tsuburaya Productions released a five-minute trailer for Ultraman Blazar, focused on the human cast. Between this and the unveiling of a bunch of the monsters (a combination of originals and some deep cuts), it continues to look extremely promising.
Tumblr media
Toho launched a Twitter account for their next Godzilla film on June 12. It's been counting down all the "core" (live-action and Toho-produced) entries in the series at the rate of one per day, starting with Shin Godzilla. Presumably, they'll reveal the poster, title, and maybe more for the new one at the end (so July 11). The way they're doing this also lends credibility to the rumored Godzilla Zero title.
Tumblr media
Hoshi 35, Megumi Odaka's triumphant return to movies, released a trailer, poster, and a bunch of stills (gathered on Wikizilla). Alas, no shots of the daikaiju in the trailer, just the baby.
Tumblr media
Bandai's finally going to be producing Ultraman toys for the U.S., with the first wave focused on the animated Netflix movie due next year.
Tumblr media
For those of you headed to G-Fest next month, the full schedule is out, and they finally announced the Friday and Saturday movies at the Pickwick: Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and Godzilla (2014), respectively. King Kong Escapes will also replace Shin Ultraman on Thursday. Dunno if I'll go to GXMG (I just rewatched it before the Tokyo SOS Fathom Event), but I'm lunging at the chance to see G14 properly-lit and with booming sound. They showed it in 2017 too and it was a blast. For the hotel's film festival, the big title of interest is Yuzo the Biggest Battle in Tokyo, a Yoshikazu Ishii joint set during the pandemic. And if you haven't caught Iké Boys yet, that's playing twice (very much before the audience it was intended for).
Also, go to my friend Alana's panel about designing kaiju gijinkas for cosplay (Saturday at 1). If you've been to either of the past two cons, you probably remember her Mothra costumes, and we're both working on a bunch more for this year.
Tumblr media
Oh yeah, and there's a third North American kaiju con, Super G, starting up in the fall... well, sort of. It might be better termed a convention within a convention (Northern National Collectors’ Convention). September 29-October 1 in Windsor, Canada, right on the Michigan border. Not many specifics yet, but the press release says, "Super G will offer fans a variety of guest celebrities and artists, direct from Japan and around the world, who worked on Kaiju franchises making either their first-ever or first-Canadian convention appearances. Inclusion opportunities feature program panels, contests, experiences, theatrical showings, collectables, cosplay, and more."
Tumblr media
I haven't been keeping up with Godziban's multi-episode collaboration with Televi-Kun—seems like pretty routine stuff—but then they had to pay homage to Sharknado in the newest installment. I knew, of course, that this day would eventually come. Now which one of you said sharknadoes weren't kaiju back when I was unhealthily obsessed with that series?

In everything I've seen her in, she just radiates stella energy.

Ohhh magnar?? For wip game
This fic is the one I am the most upset I haven't completed yet.
Fall 2014 where we still through Winds of Winter would come out within the decade. My best friend 5eva and I took a roadtrip through the Pacific Northwest and hashed out the entire plot points for this story. I bounced all my ideas off them and worked down to the nitty gritty about making everything canon compliant.
Things that happened in my life that pretty much wrecked me from any sort of fun fandom experience for 4-5 years made any staggered updates on this fic nil to poor. I also found that due to both source materials I could only work on this during fall/winter lmfao.
By the weirdest sort of coincidence that same BFF 5 eva finally picked up rewatching GOT and the terrible, awful, no good, very bad fanfic seasons and conclusion. We're talking about it again.
and it's fall/winter.

Magnar is a Hannibal fanfiction set in ASOIAF. By set I mean pretty much every event that is happening in canon is happening in the background of this story, without actually seeing any of the 'main' ASOIAF characters. Most little folk and knights don't after all, but a few tertiary and secondary characters get a line or two to move the plots along.
Ser Jack Crawford, under the banner of King Stannis Baratheon, is sent to Skagos with his men including Bravosi sellsword Beverly Katz and houndsman Will Graham. Besides establishing King Stannis' presence on the island and the North itself they're escorting Maester Price and his Acolyte Zeller to work for the 'civilized' North at the request of the Citadel.
Namely, the portion of the island controlled by the Vergers and gifted to them for their service to the Targaryen throne. They claim to have roots in Old Valeria.
What concerns Ser Jack Crawford more than the legitimacy of the Vergers is the whispers going around the taverns and trading stalls-
That the Ripper of the Narrow Sea had made berth from Skagos.

Magnar (9437 words) by Rionarch Chapters: 3/? Fandom: Hannibal (TV), A Song of Ice and Fire & Related Fandoms Rating: Mature Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings, Graphic Depictions Of Violence Relationships: Will Graham/Hannibal Lecter, Alana Bloom/Margot Verger Characters: Will Graham, Hannibal Lecter, Abigail Hobbs, Jack Crawford, Beverly Katz, Alana Bloom, Margot Verger, Baratheons (ASoIaF) Additional Tags: War of the Five Kings, Wargs & Warging (A Song of Ice and Fire), Greenseers & Greensight (A Song of Ice and Fire), Cannibalism Summary: As King Stannis Baratheon makes his play to protect the realm and solidify Northern support at the Wall, he sends his landed knight Ser Jack Crawford to treat with the lest vestiges of a Valyrian House, the Vergers, on Skagos. Magnar Hannibal Lector has other ideas he'd rather entertain.
I have a few chapters already up. Have a snippet of the next one.

“Oh, do beg my pardon. I didn’t mean to startle any of you. I simply thought that if a caravan as well armed as yourselves was going to the castle it might be just the right time to go myself.” Flame red hair and sharp cheek bones might have done something to hide her if the verdant purple shawl hadn’t been the mainstay of the whorehouses in King’s Landing.  Lady Margot scoffed but Beverly wasn’t as sure.
“I’ve seen you outside of Muskrat Holdfast. What’s your business with the Magnar?” Ser Jack cut her off and looked less amused by the minute.
“What does a whore have to do with the following of King Baratheon’s men?” Her smile was more stoic.
“Well I’d certainly done enough in his late Majesty’s Baratheon service. I’m just a woman who looks out for other little deers and their interests. If you must know there’s a certain someone at the castle who I have to look after.”

For the heck of it, here are some names (and marriages) that I’ve invented to further complete the hobbit family trees.
Bolded names are my inventions. Italicized names are Tolkien canon.
Topasia Clayhanger was the wife of Ponto Baggins II and mother of Angelica Baggins.
Lilac Burrows was the wife of Adalgar Bolger and mother of Rudigar, Rudibert & Ruby Bolger.
Petunia Brownlock was the wife of Adalgrim Took (and thus Merry & Pippin’s grandmother).
Angelonia, Camellia, and Cyclamena Took were the first three daughters of Adalgrim & Petunia Took (and thus Merry & Pippin’s aunts).
Begonia and Magnolia Took were the two daughters of Adelard Took.
Opal North-took (descendant of the Bullroarer) and Chipard were the parents of Diamond of Long Cleeve, Pippin’s wife.
Asterna and Laurelia Brandybuck were the two daughters of Marmadoc Brandybuck & Adaldrida Bolger.
Fiona Noakes was the wife of Wiseman Gamwich and mother of Hob Gammidge (and thus Sam’s great-great-grandmother).
Columbine Cobblestone was the wife of Hobson “Roper” Gamgee and mother of Andwise Roper, Hamfast “Gaffer” Gamgee, May Gamgee & Halfred of Overhill (and thus Sam’s paternal grandmother).
Brent Goodchild and Heather Longholes were the parents of Bell Goodchild (and thus Sam’s maternal grandparents).
Dahlia Birdwhistle was the wife of Holman Cotton and mother of Tolman & Wilcome (and thus Rosie’s grandmother).
Violet Bunce was the wife of Frodo Gardner and mother of Holfast Gardner (and thus Sam & Rosie’s daughter-in-law).

Whom else survived the lightning delay and finished up this weird ass game??
Anyways.
USWNT V COLOMBIA (Tuesday edition)
I love Alyssa Naeher. She’s the best. That save 😍
The backup back line with Huerta, Sonnett, Girma, and Pickett was really solid.
Huerta with the CROSSES, the forced own goal. She’s settling into her place comfortably and I love that for her.
And then Kelley coming in to just continue the right back goal supremacy for the game. Good shit.
Pickett with her first cap!! She did great and her crosses were excellent as to be expected from her.
I… really liked Sonnett and Girma together. Girma was this calm, Becky-esque final defender which I think relaxes the whole line. Sonnett’s passing into the midfield was extremely precise and it seemed like she was asked to play this CB/6 flex position. She was challenging the 50/50 balls in the middle and had a lot of success stopping any play from starting. A v classic, look how a player does when they play their preferred position.
Rose and Sanchez are very very very fun together and I’d love more lineups where we can figure out how to get them together. However, I do think the pair lacks a physical presence. They obviously have the foot skills so it’s not a huge problem, but it’s a factor. Sanchez had a quieter game. I think consistency is going to be v important for her. And feisty Rose with a card.
Lindsey… let’s say, if I had a professional coaching license and was in charge, she would not be playing. Her knee is clearly not okay. It’s held together with bubble gum and paper clips. Her running speed is slowed down and she’s clearly backing out of tackles. It’s a self preservation play that’s so unnecessary when she could instead be resting and rehabbing. Thankfully, Colombia wasn’t pressuring to a point where she was allowed to play make without people crashing into her.
and all this 6 nonsense. We don’t have one. Julie is pregnant and Andi isn’t healthy enough. Why we are not trying other formations is BEYOND me. 4-3-3 is not the end all be all. And to be honest, between club, high school, and college, I never even played in that formation. We don’t need double CB’s. Put Alana or Sonnett or fucking Becky at a stopper. Play North Carolina Courages weird ass box midfield. Stop trying to make fetch happen.
Kristie was about to fucking fight at the end of the game and lololol. The fact that Sonnett sprinted in to pull her away is even funnier. About her actual play? She’s also not a 6. Though she did serve the best diagonal long balls.
Hatch also. Starting fights!! Go Mormon go! Hometown brawl!
Alex should have been involved in more national team camps earlier in the year. She’s on fire right now in club. There’s no explanation for her play other than a lack of chemistry. And having Pinoe barely counts because 2022 Pinoe and Alex are NOT the same as 2019 Pinoe and Alex.
Midge was fine. She had very bright spots and other moments where it made sense why she came off at half.
Mal was the best player driving into the box, hands down. Finishing? Could use a little tightening up. But hey, she didn’t shove a photographer today. Proud of her!
Trin had great energy. She’s going to be a PROBLEM for international defenses in the future.
Korn sure was out there being tall!! She had trouble settling in, which is fine. She’s on cap 2, she came in late and there was a delay.
The team disconnect down both sides came down to chemistry. Crystal Sam Lindsey Pinoe Tobin Press Kelley. Those lineups had this innate connection. The chemistry was so obvious. Pickett Sanchez and Pinoe and the opposite side of Huerta Rose and Midge simply did not have the vibes.
I’m not a coaching expert but we gotta click some more pieces into place before I could be confident we’d win a major tournament with this squad. BUT TRULY, with everyone out with bébés and extremely rude injuries, it’s not the full squad yet.
Big whatever though. I still love these players and will still scream at my TV at midnight!

i was blabbing in the tags of north’s post but imo, season 1 alana represented the allure of normative society to will imo and I wanna talk about it. No new revelations tho I’m honestly just solidifying my thoughts. I’m focusing on season 1 because that’s what I watched most recently so I remember the most stuff from it lol.
So Will’s attracted to Alana right out the gate; she’s beautiful, smart, and a bit snarky and sarcastic, so of course he’d like her. And, most importantly I think, she’s interested in him but doesn’t have a use for him. I don’t think Will’s felt someone wanting him for the sake of wanting him in a long time. Plus, she’s a well-respected colleague of all of his coworkers/acquaintances. She’s beautiful and popular and if he can start a relationship with her he’ll have the most solid tether to normative society he’s probably had in years, if ever*.
But she won’t be in a room alone with him. She doesn’t want to “spook” him; she probably thinks she’s letting him meet her on his own terms, but really she’s treating him like an abandoned feral dog. But Will wants that tether, that anchor, so he keeps pursuing her despite her condescending insistence that she knows his own mind better than him. Which…idk, it’s complicated. On one hand, it’s absolutely fair of her to not want to date him because she knows the relationship would suck. But she’s clearly still attracted to him and Will is crushing too hard to be friends with her so she should step back if she’s concerned for their mental well-being. But she doesn’t. She can’t. She’s too attached at this point. She caught a glimpse of Will’s mind and now she wants to save him; it’s exactly what she predicted would happen.
But what does she want to save him from?
If Will ended up with Alana, he would better integrate into normal society. She may work through his righteous bloodthirst issues or refer him to a regular therapist to help. She could teach him “coping strategies for his empathy disorder” (read: how to mask. come on its how to mask he’s autistic empathy disorder my ASS, BRYAN-). She would be the angel on his shoulder, and of course part of Will wants that.
But it’ll never be perfect. One, bc obviously he has that with Molly (a normal relationship about healthy love) and that doesn’t fulfill him, but in the narrative language of the show (or my delulu brain), because her adherence to society’s moral code, her “innocence”, is her weakness (in s1 and 2 i havent gotten to 3 yet plz no bully). She can’t see what Hannibal is doing despite her friend’s emphatic declaration that he is because he is playing the part of a well-integrated society member too well. So when talking to Will, she becomes the angel on his shoulder that tells him what society at large thinks, and society at large wants to gaslight him into thinking he did this to himself because the loss of a mentally ill autistic man is less abhorrent in the current social climate than the loss of an elite socialite and medical practitioner. For Alana, it’s naïveté; an unwillingness to look at Hannibal beneath what he presents. I think, deep down, she was scared Will was right. So she never looked.
Meanwhile, Hannibal is the devil on his shoulder, beckoning him to taste the fruit that he already knows is so sweet (murder. its the murder fruit). Hannibal could be Will’s tether to normal society, and kind of was in s1, but it soon became clear that that wasn’t gonna happen. Because when Hannibal looked into Will’s mind, he didn’t wanna guide Will out of it into the light, he wanted to jump in there with him. This is, objectively, the worse outcome for Will. But this one is fulfilling, he has a love that sets him on fire instead of providing him distant, impersonal warmth. With Molly and Alana, Will had someone who could tame his nightmares. But only by knowing your own evil can you make your nightmares dance. And for Will, knowing himself meant throwing away his last tethers to society and morality, in a way that wasn’t innocent or naïve, but antisocial and enlightened. I could say more but I’m writing dorky ass metaphors that’s a sign to Stop
*This is kind of a wobbly analysis because we don’t know what Will’s childhood or young adulthood was like, I’m assuming that he was always kind of a misfit. This is supported by canon in that Will was always the new kid at school, but I think his isolation runs deeper than that and I think most ppl here would agree. Still, maybe Will was a chad in college and then decided to love murder again who knows

Family Vacation
Tumblr media
This lil fic was inspired by a weekend trip we had and the fact that I just love writing for Grace's brother as well as this lil chaos family. I hope you enjoy it.
🏷: @mrsjaderogers @bayisdying @ladylanera @semperhuggs
Caroline was just over a year old when Grace got the idea for a family vacation. The twins were almost nine months and Hadley was four months so she knew everybody would be able to travel. She ran the idea through the wifeys group chat; they could go to the beach for a few days and then there was going to be some racing at Charlotte. While she'd just seen her brother for Caroline's birthday, it never felt like long enough. Plus she hadn't seen him race in ages, and while she knew his girls usually weren't at the track with him and she missed them terribly, she thought it would be a fun time.
She found some rooms in Carolina Beach that weren't too over the top price wise since it wasn't peak summer yet being they were going the first of May, and while she knew all her pilots would complain about flying commercial, they'd just have to get over it. No way were they driving across the country with four kids. She found flights into Wilmington and secured rental cars as well. She also went ahead and booked the flights to Charlotte and got tickets to the dragstrip event. They were only going to be a few miles from her hometown, so she thought it'd be nice to show everybody where she came from. She was so excited for this trip, and she was very excited to surprise her brother.
The beach was a blast with the babies. Caroline loved the water, the sand not so much. Marcus and Nathaniel loved the sand, and even tried eating it much to Alana's dismay. Hadley was still too little to really enjoy it, but she loved laying on any one of her favorite adults and watching the kids. Jake, Bradley, and Mickey had a blast taking Caroline and the boys into the ocean while the girls suntanned and rested. It was so relaxing to just be away and enjoy the time together.
They spent four days in total there, with plans to come back or explore one of the other Carolina beaches for a longer trip. The fifth day they flew into Charlotte, and drove down to Grace's hometown. It was a small town on the outskirts of Charlotte, but it was close to the dragstrip and speedway. She showed them around, showing them her grandparents' house where she grew up even though they'd sold it. They even swing by the cemetery so Grace can leave some flowers and introduce Bradley and Caroline to her grandparents. In all, they only spend a couple hours in the town before heading north into Concord to their room for the weekend.
Friday they explore Concord, and everybody grabs some more souvenirs and mementos to remember their trip by. They don't stay out too long during the day because of the race that night. They want to give the kids enough time to rest and nap before a late night. Grace ends up napping with Caroline because she knows these events can go late into the night, especially if Kevin is winning.
They get to the dragstrip a couple of hours before the actual racing starts so they have time to walk through the pits and explore all the cars. She's hoping it will give her plenty of time to see Kevin too. She doesn't know for certain he'll be there as they hadn't talked about it last time they talked, but Grace is almost positive he will show up to race. She knows Charlotte's dragstrip will always be one of his favorite places to race since that's where he started.
The later it gets, the more nervous she gets that she drug everybody here for nothing. It was getting close to the end of tech and test and tune and her brother still wasn't there, despite her having seen a few of his Florida friends when they walked around. She left Caroline with Bradley and promised everybody she'd be right back; she had to see if they knew if he was coming or not. She just hoped they would remember her since she'd only met them a couple of times.
They were working on their cars, a crowd of people surrounding them. She knew their YouTube channels really brought in the crowds. She edged over to the side and called out to the one closest to her. "James!"
His head jerked up and looked in her direction. She gave a little wave and pointed at the shirt she had on which was one of Kevin's. "Grace?"
"Yea," she smiles when he recognized her. He let her under the rope and over into their circle. "What are you doing here?"
"Came to surprise Kev. I've got my husband and daughter with me and some friends and their kids. We'd been at the beach and I figured he'd be here when I heard about the race so we thought we'd surprise him. Except.... he's not here yet."
James looks around because Kevin had told them about the event. "Hey Ty! Yall heard from Kev?"
That gained everybody else's attention and they all noticed her. She was swarmed with hugs and welcoming greetings. "He called a few hours ago said he was still a couple out. Should be here soon."
"Thanks guys. I'll keep an eye out."
"Wait wait wait I think that's him," James smiled turning you towards where Kevin's truck was pulling in.
"Let me go get my girl."
"Bring her back here. We'll film it. His face is gonna be priceless."
"Thanks guys," she smiles. After collecting Bradley and Caroline, everybody else is gonna trail after once the video surprise is over, she returns to their tent. They had their cameras and go pros ready for different angles. Bradley tucked behind the tallest guy, which surprisingly had a couple of inches on him, while Grace carried Caroline behind James.
Kevin was unloading the car, so it ended up being the perfect setup. "Kev we have a surprise for you!" James called out once the car was beside the trailer.
"Oh yea? What now?" He chuckled as he slid out of the window. He noticed them all filming and his eyes narrowed in suspicion.
"Surprise!" Grace squealed stepping out from behind James. Caroline was giggling and clapping even though she really didn't know why until she saw her uncle. Kevin's face was priceless and he easily took Caroline and pulled Grace into his arms for a hug.
"What are you doing here?" He asks her as they pull back from the hug.
"Figured you'd be here. Wanted to surprise you. We took a mini family vacation out to the coast and then came back this way to watch you race."
"Well you got me but....." he knocked on the side of the trailer and the side door opened revealing his three girls. "Surprise back!"
"Auntie Grace!" Grace had an armful of two girls while Sam jumped straight into Bradley's arms.
"You've got the girls?!"
"Sure do. My week so we're gonna have some fun at the track."
"Well this is a nice surprise," Grace smiles as Cara reaches for Caroline. She had a feeling there was some drama there, but she'd get it out of him later.
Everybody with cameras peeled off promising to send the footage over. Kevin gave Caroline to Cara but stayed close. Her baby ear muffs made her look adorable, coupled with her baby Kevin racing shirt and Kevin loved it. The rest of the gang joined yall by Kevin's car, which the boys absolutely admired. Kevin easily took Hadley who smiled at him and gurgled happily, as he walked around the car with Bradley, Jake and Mickey. Jake was pushing the twins in a stroller and they just wide-eyed looked at the car.
The girls talked a mile a minute to their aunt, Baylie and Alana, since they hadn't seen her since Christmas, their mom not letting them come with Kev for Caroline's party. "We actually have one more surprise," Grace smiles catching Kevin's attention once they're done inspecting the car. They'd not told him at Caroline's party wanting to wait until they knew what they were having to tell him since he couldn't be at their gender reveal.
That catches Kevin's attention. Mickey takes Hadley back as Baylie and Alana covertly grab their phones to film and take pictures. Kev easily takes Caroline from Cara when she reaches for him once more as he gives his sister his full attention. "And?" He asks when she drags out the silence to drive him crazy.
She turns sideways and tugs her shirt a little tighter around her. "Read Caroline's shirt." On the back of her shirt it says "Uncle Kev’s fav until my little brother arrives."
His eyes snap back to hers and then to her belly. "Seriously?!"
"Yea. It was a surprise to us too," she laughs. Kevin pulls her in for another hug as they explain to the girls their getting another cousin. The girls are all excited, but Kevin finally breaks them up. "As much fun as this has been, I've gotta go make a pass before the tune session is over."
"Be careful," Grace says as Bradley takes Caroline and the girls go with them back to their seats. Kev's first pass isn't the greatest; the track prep wasn't the best and he spun as soon as he took off.
"Ouch," Sam sighed seeing her dad's time. At eight she understood more about racing than most adults. The perks of being her daddy's little mini me.
"Daddy won't like that," Ava sighed after Sam explained it to her.
Grace couldn't help but giggle. "No he probably won't sweetheart, but it'll be ok."
"Uncle Bradley can we go back to Daddy?"
Bradley hides his smile at Sam's request and nods. "Yep come on racing princess. Let's go see what he's going to do to fix it."
Grace slipped Caroline into her carrier and they headed back to the pits. Racing would start in the next fifteen minutes, so they decided to let the twins run off some energy by Kev's trailer while he worked on his tune. Hadley had already snuggled into Mickey's chest in her carrier and fallen asleep. Ava ran around with the twins, making sure they didn't fall or get hurt; Cara stayed glued to her aunt's side, while Sam watched over Kevin's shoulder everything he was doing.
Once the racing actually began, they went back to their seats. Sam wasn't happy about not going to the staging lanes with Kev, but she ended up with Bradley's attention so she was happy. Grace smiled just watching them. It had already been the best night, no matter what happened with Kev's racing. She managed to ask someone near them to snap a picture of all of them.
After Kevin barely wins the first one, the girls walk back over to the pits, leaving the boys to watch some more racing. The twins are fussy, so Alana pushes them around getting them to sleep while the girls congratulate their dad. He takes Caroline once more, while he works on the tune a little more. Grace can't help but snap a pic of the cute scene. Caroline is almost asleep, her little head laying on Kev's shoulder as he just works away.
All four of the babies end up falling asleep before Kev's next pass. Mickey and Bradley take Hadley and Caroline in their carriers so Baylie and Grace can have a break. The twins are sound asleep, laid back in their stroller. They decide to stand on the fence to watch the next few passes, and once again Kev gets the victory, putting him into the final. There wasn't as many cars there that night, so they had shorter rounds. Kev easily sails to victory in his class, and the girls are so happy for their dad. Since the babies are asleep, they decide to stay for the winner's circle so Grace can grab some pics for Kev and with his girls.
They make plans to meet up with Kev and the girls in the morning for breakfast and to spend the day together. They have a late flight that night, in the hopes the kids will sleep through it, so they have all day to spend. Since Kev won Friday night, he decided to skip the Saturday passes and spend the day with his family. Overall, it was one of the best vacations any of them had been on in a really long time, and they were all looking forward to the next one, maybe even to Florida that time.
