II: Blood and Ghosts
(Batgirl/Red Hood)
Description: Reader tries getting a clue. part one
“Typically, they steer clear of the Village, but that doesn’t appear to be the case as of recent. Oracle found out about an operation out of a Hadley’s Deli there- standard money laundering, but it also could’ve been linked to the shipment of cocaine that we found at the Yacht Basin.”
“Right. So what changed?”
“A better question would be what didn’t?”
A beat. The contrasting silence that followed jarred me from my thoughts as I glanced over and realized that Bruce was prompting me for an answer. Tim looked expectant and inquisitive, but that was sort of his default expression.
“Oh. Sorry. What?” I said apologetically.
“Maroni.” He said simply. Nothing came to mind. He didn’t express verbal disappointment as he turned back to Tim, but I knew it was there.
“Red Hood has been operating out of The Bowery. Maroni and Falcone are stubborn, but they’re losing. He’s pushing them north.”
“So moving to the Village isn’t expansion. It’s desperation.” Tim muttered thoughtfully.
“I believe so.”
“May I be excused?” I asked. Bruce glanced back to me, studying a moment. Scrutinizing every detail; not deciding whether or not to let me leave- rather, deciding why I wanted to. Then, he nodded. Seems he wasn’t in the mood to ask.
I swept up my laptop and phone, and ascended the stairs from the cave to the manor quickly, trying to escape the eyes boring into my back. Only when the cool, lemon-scented air of the manor filled my lungs did I breathe a sigh of relief. Alone. All I needed was few minutes alone. I scaled the marble steps to my room and shut the door.
I hadn’t told anyone that I saw him three nights ago. That I watched him murder a man in retribution for me. My alter ego, anyway. I don’t know why. Maybe because it would mean having to tell them I snuck away. Having to walk through every detail again; sights, sounds, smells. What Red Hood was wearing and what he sounded like, what gun he was holding and how he held it, what prompted him to fire, how many shots and how he acted when he did.
But if ever there was a time to be high-strung and anxious, it was when you were keeping secrets from Batman. And Oracle. And Nightwing. And Red Robin. And Robin. Damian in particular could smell a lie like blood in the water, and he wasn’t too polite to hold your gaze until he was certain you weren’t hiding anything. That, and the art of solidarity was still foreign to him- even if I did tell him in confidence, he would take it right to Bruce. Possibly the police. Maybe a news outlet or two just because it soothed his vindictive nature. I’d been avoiding him.
Evening bled into night, and I was barred from masked business on school nights, so I couldn’t even patrol to ease the anxious energy. Still, that meant less opportunity for Bruce to analyze my musculoskeletal ticks or whatever the hell he did to tell when I was nervous, so I decided it was a worthy trade-off and resigned myself to independent research.
Who the hell was Red Hood, anyway? Half of Gotham was looking for him, the other half was running from him. I opened my laptop.
His debut was The Viper House, a strip club in Little Italy that also functioned as a human trafficking hub when the owner, Renaldo, needed to buy his wife (or handful of mistresses) a new Blue Nile diamond. By the end, the building had to be gutted. There’s only so much crime scene clean-up can do with carpet.
Next came the kingpins. Blowing open a trafficking operation had a short grace period if you didn’t cut out the source. Italian mobsters, the Romani families, the crews that had built empires on drug and sex trade dropped like flies until they found that their numbers dwindled for the first time since Joker finally bit it. The dozens of loyal men on their payroll decided that empty pockets were better than a full grave, and when it came to the business of death, Red Hood was very persuasive. It went on like that for six months; he amassed men, power, weapons, and tech. Most importantly, a potent reputation. This was due in no small part to his creative footwork; he liked to send messages. One file covered an incident where Alphonso Kuznetsov decided to write Gotham’s new player an open letter in the evening column suggesting that if he decided to bring his business to Port Adams, he might find himself in a ‘watery grave’. Kuznetsov was found a week later when a fishing vessel drug an entire coffin from the bottom of the harbor, padlocked and full of water. He was bound, drowned, and gagged with a copy of the very paper that featured his message. Red Hood must have been in touch with his artistic sensibilities; it was all very Shakespearean.
Of course, these were all just words. Rumors and hearsay. All I knew of the Red Hood from my intimate encounter was that he had a quick hand, an incendiary temper, and he didn’t fucking like creeps. All the makings of vigilante, if you chose to see it like that.
I sighed. Two hours and none of my research gave me any indication of why me. Why the hell should Red 57-kill-count Hood care if some goon told me he like the way I looked in my suit? I may has well have been the veiled threats of Kuznetsov’s evening column for all my inconsequence to him.
But it all kept running through my mind. Backwards and forwards. The vitriol in his voice preluding the barbarity of his reprimand. The way he said little Batgirl, like the crime was that I’d been engaged at all. More than the memory, something was telling me to keep digging. Something dragging me back to Crime Alley with the current of the running blood through Little Italy’s gutters.
I had to do something. And if that something wasn’t going to Bruce, then school tomorrow would have to wait.
The morning went along as per usual. I woke up at six, dawned my Gotham Academy uniform, grabbed a muffin and coffee, completed a complicated and well-practiced secret handshake with Tim (that Dick was secretly jealous of), and was out the door at 6:30, keys jingling in Alfred’s hand.
He dropped me off outside the ornate gothic academy, and I waved goodbye as I skipped backward along the cobblestone walkway. Once his black Mercedes was a pinpoint on the horizon, I promptly turned heel from the front doors, heading East toward the Narrows. Catching the subway there would take me as far as the Knight’s Stadium, and from there it was a short distance to the Alley. I wasn’t exactly inconspicuous in my academy uniform- anyone who gave a shit could pretty confidently deduce that school was in session at 8am on a Tuesday, and no student native to the Alley could afford a private education, so I was bound to draw eyes. I hadn’t packed an extra outfit incase Tim or Alfred got suspicious- that was paranoia puppeteering. I wasn’t used to skipping school. I’d have to make due.
Crime Alley in broad daylight was a brand new experience. At night, at least the smoke unfurling from the sewer grates hit the flickering streetlights and offered an unconventional charm. During the day, it was like shedding light on a foul sin. I was starkly out of place, and even the lapdog-sized rats seemed to know it, scurrying back across gritty concrete when I passed by. I looked for familiar things I’d seen the other night- a run-down apartment complex, a gated liquor shop, a meager but menacing corner-store, busy with glaring laymen reluctantly dragging out their wallets for a pack of cigarettes. I caught the eye of a woman sitting on the curb with a paper-bag bottle for company, and she scowled.
Spurned by the rats, and now by the people, I was running out of options. Sticking close to the buildings that perimetered the square, I moved in tandem with the motion of the locals, so as not to draw any eyes by looking lost. It was an unnerving scape; too quiet for my liking, but just empty enough to feel safely underseen. I made my way past familiar landmarks until I finally stood before the warehouse where I’d been.
I listened; no sound from inside. Even henchmen have day jobs. Jimmying the rusty padlock was just a matter of brandishing a bobby-pin from my hair, and the heavy metal door swung open without much resistance. I cautiously picked my way around crates and boxes, unsure of what I was looking for. Clues, maybe. Proof that he was here and dropped a body in my name, amen.
There was a dark, daunting stain on the floor where Hoffman’s body was. A phantom gunshot echoed in my ears, along with a nauseating sound of flat-back weight slapping concrete.
“Ain’t school in session?” I spun on my heel, meeting the red helm of a towering man draped in leather and armor. My mouth went dry. My right foot slipped back into a fighting stance before I remembered I was in cashmere and plaid, not kevlar. Not that I even stood a chance either way; but at least he seemed to harbor good will toward Batgirl. Wordlessly, I took a few steps back until I was standing over the blood and ghosts of Hoffman’s demise.
“P-please. Don’t- don’t hurt me.” I rasped.
I could play the rebellious, morose teenager and come up with something like it was a dare, or I could offer no explanation and simply cry.
Red Hood’s head tipped one way. His hands were empty- for now. Two heavy-looking glocks hung on his waist. I didn’t want to die on top of Hoffman’s blood stain. There was a level of symbolism there I was deeply unprepared to spend my final moments analyzing.
“Lookin’ for something, darlin’?” I swallowed- unable to say you.
“Wh-What do you want?” I asked.
He laughed, but it was humorless. Lacking whatever key component made laughs so appealing. As though the sound rung off the gravestones of uncanny valley before reaching my ears. “I think we’re both asking stupid questions.” He said. I was fucked. He outweighed me by a hundred pounds, and could out-draw me even if I had a weapon. I had no explanation for my being here that suited a civilian, and my phone was in my bag, meaning help was a world away.
But just as soon as he advanced a few paces, he stopped, and gestured to the crimson beneath my feet.
“Enjoy the show the other night?” He asked, before pulling something out of his jacket pocket and twirling it between his fingers with practiced ease. A batarang.
“You forgot somethin’.”
Cold, knife-like fear erupted in my spine, driven to the hilt. He knew. How did he know? What the hell was I supposed to do? My terror must have shown on my face, because he stopped fidgeting.
“It’s okay, babydoll. Your secret’s safe with me.”
“H-how-“
He moved again, slow, lazy strides until he was no more than an inch from me.
“Who are you?” I asked, figuring if I was gonna die, I should at least know that much.
His hands grabbed mine. The leather of his gloves was cool on my skin, but it barely registered for the closeness of him. I stared at the red bat symbol on his chest, jagged and angry looking. I blinked and looked down slowly as he closed my fingers around the cold metal of the batarang.
“Go home, little bird.” It was a cold, seething demand, his voice snagging on the scrambler to make it sound like a low growl.
“Tell Batman when he’s ready to stop sending his toy soldiers,” His hand went under my chin, tilting my head upward. My breath shook as I drew it, hitching, even though the man before me was faceless. Clean, red monochrome, glinting in the light.
“I’m getting impatient.” *
I walked through the manor door in a daze, the cold steel batarang searing my palm.
Bruce and Damian were in the living room, each invested in their own reading material. The grandfather clock ticked his steady tempo, and I inconspicuously adjusted the bag on my shoulder. Bruce had a steaming cup of coffee on the glass side table beside his leather chair.
“How was school?” He asked, not looking up. My paranoia convinced me it sounded rhetorical, but I shrugged anyway.
“Same old.” A glance, to see if my lie had landed.
Damian was the spitting image of his father. He, along with Tim, operated in the wake of being an only child, so he never did care about how I did in school, or much of anything else in my orbit. If at any point he did, he never thought to ask. Father and son looked like a matching set of dolls sitting there, cross-legged, with dark hair and gaunt eyes, both leanly muscular, and habitually poised; a consequence of being from the upper echelon of each of their respective backgrounds.
“Hey, um, are you going out tonight?” I asked.
“I am.”
“Can I come?”
“Are you certain you want to?” He still didn’t look up.
I blinked. “Um… yeah. Why?”
“You’ve been distracted since the last outing.”
Damian visibly tuned in.
“Oh. Sorry. I had a big paper I was worried about for school, but I turned it in today, so I’m good to go.” I threw him a thumbs up, even though he wasn’t looking.
A beat.
“Very well, then. Nine o’clock.”
I nodded, and headed toward the stairs.
“Y/N,” I stopped, and turned around. He was looking at me now, eyes blue and steady.
“Yeah?”
“Do you think you did well?”
“…”
“On the paper.”
I threw him a smile. “The best.”

Part 2 of my Under the Red Hood Review
Hello! Here I am again with part two of this review, if you want to read the first part I will link it here!
Let’s continue!
Chapter eight gives us a look into the past, to when Jason was stealing the batmobile’s tires, to one of the first times Jason went out as Robin with Batman and everything was wonderful…then one of the scenes from the past show a Jason that may come off as a bit more aggressive on the job, it’s also shown that he does agree that the level of aggression was unnecessary but that the criminal deserved it anyway.
I know that sometimes people get the impression that Jason was an angry and extremely aggressive Robin, which is not correct, he was a sweetheart (and I am referring to Post-Crisis Jason because that’s what is in continuity in this story) just like Dick (he had forty years of being a sweetheart too, Marv Wolfman misses me with that angsty and angry shit) but I think what’s important here is the fact that Jason saw things differently from Bruce and that does not make him a bad Robin, it makes him a Robin with different experiences and as a human being he is allowed to change his views, also let’s be honest, hormones are a bitch so emotions are at an all-time high so he is bound to change. This does not mean that his death was his fault, Jason felt lost and wanted a mother and he made some decisions but Bruce was the adult and he should have paid more attention to him and his behavior so in this house the only ones to blame for Jason’s death will always be the Joker and Batman.
Rant over.
Back to the issue we see Bruce, who has been doing tests and analyzing the coffin that Jason was supposedly buried in for hours, he is a whole ass mess but at some point in time he reaches a verdict…There was never a body in the coffin.
In chapter nine we meet Davis McCullen and Alfie Tisner who have a sort of meth lab in Black Mask or Red Hood’s territory, they don’t really know, and they also have a friend that is selling drugs to kids so yeah…they are in big trouble.
As I read I expect Hood to kind of appear out of thin air and kill them but that doesn’t happen, Batman is the one that comes crashing through a window and tells them that if they don’t pack their things and move they are dead because there is a wall full of C4 (that Jason implanted), Batman wastes no time and gets to work on disarming the bomb as he does that Jason makes himself known (trough a microphone) and tells the Bat that there is no way he can do it and that he better run too. Bruce says that the building is empty and there is no reason for him to blow it up which Jason is aware of and then suggests that Batman knows how much good it does to put a little fear into people and…boom.
Look at this little shit.
Tumblr media
We soon find out that the building belonged to Black Mask, and that is not the only thing that Hood wants off the map, he is shown blowing up one of Masks trucks that is full of weapons. Here we also learn a bit more about his modus operandi, he never steals drugs or weapons for himself, he just destroys them and while they were expecting that behavior in what Hood deemed his territory, he is now doing it everywhere. We also find out that before he was trying to get Mask’s people to work for him but now he just kills them.
He is, however, taking his cut from wherever he can, so maybe he is building his own empire and his move as of now is eliminating the competition. This theory is proven true when Jason in all his glory and with a bazooka shoots Mask’s office floor.
Mask is pissed off and as he is screaming into the wind an angel answers his call…Deathstroke is here and he wants to play. This is not pleasing for Hood or Batman.
Slade is working with the Society and Mask wants Hood “Serious dead. Head on a pike, guts on the pavement, me wearing a sweater vest made of his skin kind of dead.” So, Slade sends people to take care of the job.
Mask isn’t pleased though, apparently Captain Nazi (???), Hyena and an unknown third party aren’t enough for him but Slade assures him that they will get the job done, no worries.
The attack on Hood comes when some men are trying to send a “message” to him and here is where weirdo one and two bamboozle our boy.
Tumblr media
The fight that ensues is good but is overshadowed by what Alfred says behind the scene, he talks about how Jason as Robin told him that Batman and the legend of what he could do didn’t necessarily scare the “dress ups” the way that it scared the street thugs, so as a consequence they were more dangerous, Alfred true to himself tried to explain that the dress ups probably believe different things about Batman but Jason told him something that shocked him, he said “They all know he won’t kill them.” Which is true, you, me and Alfred know it.
As Alfred continues “talking” the fight welcomes a new player, Batman. He narrates the fight and realizes that they need to team up which comes naturally to them both, in a second they are in synch just like they used to back in the cave all those years ago. As the fight is coming to an end the third party arrives…yep Count Vertigo is here, the fight doesn’t last long though, because there is adrenaline and hyenas and scents the fight is over in no time (I am not explaining that fight, it’s so weird). Captain Nazi is the only casualty and Batman isn’t happy but just like Jason I am okay with it, if he had to kill one of them let it be the Nazi.
Jason obviously leaves and taunts the Bat once more.
Alfred ends the monologue by saying that Jason never understood that it wasn’t Batman’s strength or stealth that scared his adversaries but his resolve.
So, Batman makes a dramatic promise, “Time for this to end.” dun dun duuuuun
Chapter eleven part one opens with Alfred telling us about one of his and Bruce’s hobbies, they used to collect first editions of books and it soon became a tradition that Alfred then shared with both Dick and Jason…so when he finds a package for him and B that says “Just two to add to the pile. Cheers – Jason” Alfred immediately contacts Bruce.
Back to Black Mask, he apparently decided to set up a meeting with his right-hand men, they think that they are there to evaluate the idea of making a deal with Red Hood so he stops messing up their business and they are right! It’s just that the deal was made between Mask and Hood and it consisted in them being killed off.
 “Are you happy?” Roman asks.
“Getting there” Hood answers.
Back with Alfred we are able to see what is in the package. In it there is a lock of green hair with tissue included so yeah, now they know that Jason has the Joker, and he was nice enough to give them an address.
Once again with Mask and Hood well, let me tell you if Hood is just “getting there” then Mask is just not happy. They get into an argument, a big one, Mask says that killing all his right-hand men should be sufficient but Hood says it isn’t. It goes on for a while and Mask loses his marbles completely, apparently he put everything on the line for the deal but Hood really doesn’t give a fuck. A fist connects with Hood’s face and a fight ensues, while they do that they also yell at each other about the proper way of running the underworld, the fear factor, who is prettier, who is the best gangster and who looks better in biker clothing…you know, the important stuff.
I am not undermining the fight, believe me but it’s just that they talk, punch and throw each other across the room a lot. Sacrifice and what they are willing to do for Gotham or better said what they are willing to do TO Gotham are the last things they discuss.
Just as the end of the fight comes, we once again have Alfred talking in the background about the time Jason died and the time Bruce’s parents died and how different the two instances are, Bruce was a little boy and defenseless when his parents died but when Jason died he had everything, the training, gadgets and abilities the only thing that he lacked was time.
And as it turns out that’s about to happen once more…Batman is going to arrive to the place where Jason and Mask are going at it just in time to see Jason drop dead on the floor.
Don’t worry friends Jason isn’t dead (again) it’s just a random dude with a mustache and Mask is pissed about it, what’s new?
Jason is actually with the Joker, and by “with the Joker” I mean being annoyed by the Joker…he is ranting on and on about how he killed him, how good things come in threes like Batman, Robin and himself. At some point Joker decides that the sensible thing to do next is compare Jason still letting him live with Batman’s no killing rule and then to make matters worse compare Jason’s actions as Red Hood with his own.
Tumblr media
I absolutely LOVE Jason in this moment, I swear seeing Joker’s smile fade away brings me joy, he tells him exactly what he doesn’t want to hear. Jason isn’t like the Bat he won’t stay and play his game; this man right here just scared the Joker and nobody can’t tell me otherwise.
Back to Batman, he is trying his best to shake Mask off but the man keeps questioning if he knows who the Red Hood is and why did he let him operate in such a brutal way for so long (and affecting his business, poor thing so sad). Batman basically tells him to stop playing victim, he thinks that Mask crossed a line that someone really didn’t want crossed and that at the end of the day he is just another gagster…which is exactly what Hood had said moments ago trough the helmet to Black Mask, in a moment of great intelligence Mask deduces that maybe Batman actually knows exactly who Hood is.
Batman of course doesn’t answer because he thinks he is slick but the cat is out of the bag. Among the ruble of the helmet that just exploded (yeah the helmet had a built in bomb, that detonated after Mask unmasked the mustache man) Batman finds a message from Hood, a place and “you know where”.
The east end, Crime Alley. That’s where Jason takes him because it’s “fitting”, after all it’s the place where they first met.
Jason tells Batman that the Joker is in the building next to them and that he has it wired to blow it up, so Batman being his stupid self says that he won’t let him kill the Joker (come on Jason why do you want to kill the nice clown man, he is such a sweetheart).
The fight between those two is about to start when the scene changes. An attack, a living bomb called Chemo is being dropped (by the Society) in Bludhaven, Nightwing’s city. And Batman has a front row seat to see the show.
Tumblr media
Yep, it’s not a good time to make snarky comments Jason; as far as both of them know Dick Grayson is dead. And the emotion in Batman’s face is heartbreaking, we as the readers have seen impossible situations, characters surviving shit that they wouldn’t in real life but characters within comics don’t know that… so, Bruce just saw another one of his sons die. (Dick is alive though, don’t worry)
Now, Jason has been a little shit during the whole story, but do not think for a moment that the situation somehow brings any form of positive emotion within him, what happens is that he sees an emotionally compromised Batman and well, will there ever be a better chance to manipulate him into feeling even worse?
Tumblr media
…If Batman leaves, the Joker dies. So, first choice for the Bat, either he goes to what’s left of Bludhaven and searches for Dick or he stays and doesn’t let Jason kill the Joker.
Batman chooses to fight, and once again they start the same dance but this time B has upgraded his gadgets (you will never catch him wearing the same thing twice! Shame on you!) Jason teases him a little bit about the cape and B burns his jacket…
Batman has a whole speech about how Jason won’t be able to save Gotham or be better than him…that he knows that he failed him and is trying not to do it again. But Jason says that the failure he talks about isn’t really were his problem lies.
Tumblr media
There we have it. And I would like to ask the same thing, why is the Joker still alive? Would it actually be so bad if he were beaten to death by someone’s bare hands? (Check out Joker: Last Laugh #6 (January, 2002) for a surprise)
But that’s not the point, Jason is mad because he doesn’t understand and he feels betrayed, if the mad man kills a fifteen-year-old and then continues to kill and you as Batman aren’t willing to break the cycle of:  1) Joker escapes Arkham 2) Joker does something evil 3) Batman fights and captures him 4) Batman sends the Joker to Arkham 4) Arkham is already corrupt and lets him out after a while or he corrupts/kills a few people into letting him out, then what kind of man are you?
Batman obviously has an answer as to why he hasn’t killed Joker yet. He doesn’t do it because it will be too easy and not only that but he has thought about it…not just killing him but torturing him BUT! he won’t. He can’t really, you see, If he does it once maybe he will never stop (there he goes, the man with a resolve of steel) if he walks the dark path once he will walk it forever. Basically, Batman has zero willpower and zero control…my dude no one believes you!!!! Jason doesn’t either but he does have something to say.
Tumblr media
Heartbreaking, that’s the only thing I have to say about these panels, these are panels that have always stuck with me. If you want this conversation to reach a whole new level of emotion I suggest you watch Batman: Under the Red Hood (2010) it’s an animated movie and Jason Todd is voiced by Jensen Ackles (who plays Dean Winchester in Supernatural) which is probably the best casting ever, Jensen is excellent at showing emotion with his voice. I totally know that probably all of you have seen the movie but it’s so good that I really think it’s worth watching again.
It doesn’t matter how emotional it’s for us, Batman can’t and won’t kill him, not even when Jason slides him a gun…so here comes the second time Batman has to make a choice
Tumblr media
And he does, well, he uses a batarang to slice Jason’s throat making him let go off the Joker. Jason falls to the floor, a pool of blood around him. As that happens Joker grabs the gun and aims for the dynamite left there (remember that the building was set to go off) and shoots. BOOM!
And that’s the end. All three of them survive although Batman didn’t know that Jason was going to survive, I mean can he actually tell the future or…maybe I am missing something.
And yes, that was the end, I understand that to some it’s just a shitty ending and I don’t blame you…but to me it’s genius.
It ends with Batman betraying Jason. They don’t make up, Batman doesn’t try to come to an understanding with him, he just makes a choice, he would rather save the Joker before killing or letting Jason kill him, which is bullshit my friends because Jason has been killing this whole story and B has been aware of it.
Jason appears later in Nightwing issue #118 (May, 2006) to #122 (September, 2006) as Nightwing and with tentacles. Don’t worry, you don’t have to read that. After that he appears here and there but personally, I really didn’t catch up with him up until Batman: Battle for the Cowl.
Anyway, I am going to end it here, I hope whoever takes the time to read this enjoys it, see you around!

Hey, guys! I know it has been an age since I updated or posted any fic. I uh... I’ve been going through a lot.
Many of you, I’m sure, are now familiar with Omegaverse and A/B/O Dynamics. I have a deep and abiding love for this particular brand of trash, and I’ve recognized that there is a lack of it in the DC fandom. SO! Surprise, surprise! I’m coming back with Part I for a Jason A/B/O fic.
Let me know if you want to see more of this story, and I hope you’re all doing well in this godforsaken hellscape of a year <3
Tag List: @nxxttime , @possiblyelven , @thepuckishrogue , @jinkies-its-a-writer, @queeniepearls, @sesquipedalian-aficionado, @reinathequeenofdreems, and @dcuniverse-fanatic (If you want to be tagged, let me know! For more fics, check out my masterlist.)
Making time for a meal was often too much work for Jason. He ate on the go, eight out of ten times. The rare occasions he sat still to consume food usually involved an invitation from Alfred, like today’s debacle of a lunch. Steph was fighting with Bruce (shocker), Barbara had the flu, and Cass was diligently working one doozy of case. Her brief email rundown was more than considerate, given that she was using a satellite connection on the ass-crack of the planet in some Godforsaken jungle.
Trying to find the time to arrange a date? Ridiculous.
“C’mon, Jay,” Dick taps his shoulder with his knuckles. “I think you’d really like her. And her brother’s in the life, so it’s not like you have to deal with the ‘secret identity’ stuff.”
Now that was a plus, just not enough of one to lure Jason out of his malcontent. “Who’s ‘er brother?” he asks around a mouthful of sandwich, hoping to change the subject.
“Oh, a meta-guy I worked with in Spiral.”
The deliberate nonchalance of the eldest Robin makes Jason bristle. “Yeah,” he reiterates, tucking the massive bite into his cheek to speak more clearly. “And his name was?”
“Not the important part,” Dick dodges again. “The important parts are that she’s an omega living in Gotham who does charity work for a living. She is also very cute! I have a picture.” At this point, he sets down the family sized bag of plain Lays (abominable) and fishes his phone out of his back pocket.
Tim, thank Christ, decides to weigh in on the matter. “I feel like who her brother is happens to be important, considering that you specified he knows who Jason is, and by proxy the rest of us…”
           “I didn’t say that!”
“You said I wouldn’t have to keep my identity a secret, because he’s in the life. That wouldn’t be relevant unless he knew me,” Jason motions to his chest vigorously, some stray shreds of lettuce escaping his sandwich.
“That’s not what I said” Dick insists.
“It’s what you implied with what you said.” Tim points at Dick with a cheese puff, pinky aloft, then pops the snack into his mouth to state another observation. “Also, regardless of whether or not he knows Jason, he knows who you are. That means he already knows who we are, and I’d really like to have his name, Dick.”
“Tim, shut up. This isn’t about you.”
“Let’s watch our tone, boys,” Alfred says, breezing into the kitchen with a faintly disappointed air to have found them, not only arguing, but hunched vulture-like around the kitchen island decimating what would have been decent leftovers. “Master Dick, we all know how Jason feels about match-making: much the way Master Bruce feels about it.”
Outwardly admonished, Dick says something to schmooze Alfred while he slides his phone over to Jason. Never one to deny curiosity, Jason peers down to see the girl Dick’s pestering him about. She’s a round young woman in a dirty pink T-shirt holding up a mop-head of a puppy with a big, goofy smile on her face. Her hair is windswept, she’s clearly sunburned, her front teeth have a gap between them, and she’s possibly the most adorable human being he’s ever seen in his life.
Shaking his head, Jason says, “She’s not my type.”
Unrepentant and quick to ignore the wave of wry disapproval emanating from Alfred, Dick stops mid-excuse to say, “Oh, she is so your type. Don’t lie to me.”
“She looks twelve!” Jason recoils, scrunching his face and glancing back down at the sweet girl in the photo. “The hell’s wrong with you?”
“She does not,” Dick defends himself, using his back to block Tim’s snooping look toward the screen. He double checks the picture himself, and a few moments pass. “Okay,” he shoots Jason a resentful glance while swiping forward a few times. “She looks a little young in that particular picture, but she’s in her twenties. Here! Look at this one.”
Tim to the rescue again! “Uh, I thought you said you had a picture, Dick. As in one.”
Dick doesn’t bother to dignify that with more than a muttered, “Puh-lease.” Like they weren’t all aware that folders full of images on anyone were only a few clicks away. Tim, especially.
Jason tunes out of the bickering that begins between them as Dick continues to exclude Tim, physically using his body as a barrier and failing to hold the phone steady for Jason’s eyes. She’s in a bikini top seated in a cheap plastic kiddy pool, more tanned and freckled with her hair restrained somewhat successfully in a braid that sits over her shoulder. Three massive dogs crowd around her for attention, but her eyes, amber from the angle of the sun, are staring straight at the camera. This smile is shyer; lips hiding her teeth, shoulders bent forward to bring her chest in and mask the soft rolls on her stomach brought out by her position sitting upright. She does look to be markedly older in this particular photo.
“How many damn dogs does she have?” Jason returns to his sandwich, averting his eyes and willing his voice to be dismissive.
“She works at the new shelter in East End, bruh. These aren’t her dogs.”
Damian ghosted into the kitchen at some point and posted himself behind Jason. The older brother pretends that he’s not startled to hear the kid speak. “Really? I’ve been reading good things about their practice. No-kill, good rehoming rates. Working to coordinate with other shelters and founding a spay/neuter program...” he trails off, weaseling between the two oldest brothers to have a look at Dick’s phone. “Smart advertising too. A scantily clad omega female sitting a pool with freshly groomed dogs? Good call. I bet those three have already been adopted.”
“Scantily clad?” Tim prods, doubly straining to maneuver around Dick.
Mercifully, however, this brings the picture show to an end. Dick huffs, glancing uncomfortably at Damian and tucking his phone away. Apparently, an actual twelve year old commenting on a woman’s state of dress is enough to upset his sensibilities.
Damian looks at Jason, eyes piercing and the same green as his own. He digs a hand into Dick’s bag of potato chips and says, “You should date her. She was attractive enough, and I’m sure she’s a lovely person.”
The child is unblinking as he withdraws a handful of chips and begins to eat them while starting Jason down. He half expects the little fucker to wave his free hand and pull some Jedi mind trick gag, but remembers that Damian doesn’t do pop culture humor when Tim’s in the room.
Jason drops his sandwich on the naked stone counter as though he’s discovered mold. “Well, that’s it for me,” he says, edging toward the sunroom and the side door into the gardens. “I gotta’ go.”

round up // MAY 20
Tumblr media
When the going gets rough, I find I keep coming back to two kinds of movies: Romantic comedies and action adventures. For whatever reason, those are my comfort food, even if I’m watching someone get their heart broken or fight for their lives.
Hopefully you’re finding small ways to make your days brighter with books, movies, music, and shows that either help you fight or forget some of the darkness around us for a time. These were a few that made my month brighter, including a number of rom coms and action flicks.
May Crowd-Pleasers
Tumblr media
SNL at Home
I almost cried for joy when I learned SNL would finish out its season even though it wouldn’t be in Studio 8H—it felt like a glimmer of a lot of joys we’ve lost in the last few months. While the At Home episodes have an odd rhythm compared to the usual broadcast (that live audience makes a difference, especially during “Weekend Update”), I still laughed every week. A few highlights:
“Bailey at the Movies”
“Dreams”
“Grocery Store”
“MasterClass Quarantine Edition” + “Another MasterClass Qurantine Edition”
“RBG Workout”
Watch those skits, then enjoy an infographic-heavy review of the season from Vulture.
Tumblr media
Extraction (2020)
Is this a groundbreaking action movie? Heck no, but watching Chris Hemsworth fight to save a kid with a supporting appearance from David Harbour made for a great Sunday evening. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 6/10
Tumblr media
The Wedding Singer (1998)
Somehow I’ve never gotten around to this rom com, perhaps because Adam Sandler’s sense of humor usually isn’t my cup of tea. But here he replaces the gross out jokes with a sweet chemistry with Drew Barrymore. I liked it so much I gave 50 First Dates a shot, but, uh, I only recommend movies I finish. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 6.5/10
Tumblr media
Baby Boom (1987)
Another not-innovative genre entry, but a satisfying one. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 7/10
Tumblr media
Action Movies set in 1700s America: The Last of the Mohicans (1992) + The Patriot (2000)
Sometimes I don’t want a complicated villain—sometimes I just want Jason Isaacs (aka Lucius Malfoy) to be so evil I want Mel Gibson to take him down with a tomahawk. The Last of the Mohicans: Crowd - 8/10 // Critic: 8.5/10 // The Patriot - Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 8.5/10
Tumblr media
Taylor Swift City of Lover concert (2020)
I’ve seen Ms. Swift live twice and have loved the stadium tour spectacle. But an intimate show heavy on acoustic performance reminds me how well her songwriting holds up no matter the production
Tumblr media
Prop Culture (2020)
I know, I know: Disney+ original series are well executed, long-form advertising. But can you find better-executed advertising than Jason Schwartzman chatting about the Mary Poppins snow globe at a piano with Richard Sherman, the character he played in Saving Mr. Banks? These staged treasure hunts for Disney movie props may be a bit self-important, but they’re also a dose of nostalgia and lessons about the technical side of filmmaking.
Tumblr media
This Drake Bell TikTok
If you get this, you get this.
Tumblr media
Silverado (1985)
My weird New Year’s resolution? To watch Westerns, a genre I’ve basically skipped until now. Silverado feels like a throwback to classic Westerns with a modern sensibility and more laughs. Plus, baby Kevin Costner and Jeff Goldblum in a fur coat! Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 7.5/10
Tumblr media
Chromatica by Lada Gaga (2020)
Turns out I’m not just a fan of the A Star Is Born/duets with Tony Bennet/Joanne Lady Gaga. I’ve always been cooler on her electronic-dance-club Top 40 hits than her recent guitar-and-vocal stylings, but I can’t stop listening to album-long jam sesh. It’s old Gaga meets 2020 beats meets Depeche Mode/Flock of Seagulls/Madonna/New Order of the ‘80s.
Tumblr media
The Heat (2013)
Two of my favorite funny ladies teaming up was—not surprisingly—a win. No one delivers a kooky insult like Melissa McCarthy. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7/10
May Critic Picks
Tumblr media
Hail, Caesar! (2016)
Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Ralph Fiennes, Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton, Channing Tatum, and more try to keep Hollywood and their careers afloat despite a bizarre series of kidnappings, line flubs, and tap dances. Of course the Coen Brothers have a dry, wacky take on the Hollywood studio era. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 9/10
Tumblr media
Jane Eyre (2006)
Confession: I have not read Jane Eyre. But my mom did, and since she enjoyed the book so much, I figured a happy medium would be to watch this BBC miniseries with her commentary about what they changed from the Brontë classic.
Tumblr media
Daisy Jones & the Six (2019)
The highest compliment I can give a book is staying up way too late to finish it, which is what I did with this buzzy Taylor Jenkins Reid book. It’s a barely-fictional oral history of sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll in the ‘70s, and somehow it’s not crass or gratuitous about any of them. Most impressive is that Jenkins Reid keeps her characters well-defined even though it’s not written in a traditional novel format. My favorite parts of this story are the deep dive into the creative process and the exploration of how we remember the past. Here’s hoping the Sam Claflin/Riley Keough-led, Reese Witherspoon-produced, (500) Days of Summer team-written Amazon series can do this book justice—I need this soundtrack!
Tumblr media
The Plot Thickens podcast (2020)
A Turner Classic Movies podcast hosted by Ben Mankiewicz about film history is a specific—and predictable—Venn diagram of my interests.
Tumblr media
Alfred Hitchcock Double Feature: Psycho (1960) + The Birds (1963)
The story about Psycho goes that my grandmother ran out of the movie theatre screaming during the shower scene. Now that I’ve finally watched it, I know why. This horror drama is still terrifying today even if you know what’s going to happen. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 10/10
The story about The Birds goes that my mother was terrified as a little girl after walking into a room where it was on TV, and now she still won’t watch it. The Oscar-winning visual effects have aged so much I didn’t find it scary, but I was still sucked in by the eerie plot. That said, I did have a frightening dream last night involving Tippi Hedren, so it may be more effective than I realized. Give me just a sec while I schedule some Hitchcock-focused family therapy. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 9/10
Tumblr media
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)
Spend two hours with the two nicest bank robbers you’ll ever meet! A winsome Paul Newman and a laconic Robert Redford make their escape on the scenic trails of the Southwest, and gosh darn it, if they aren’t just a barrel of fun. I enjoyed this Western so much I recommended it in a piece I wrote for Round Trip, too. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 9/10
Tumblr media
Katharine Hepburn Double Feature: Alice Adams (1935) + Woman of the Year (1942)
Saying you love Katharine Hepburn is like saying you love sunshine and flowers—of course you do! In Alice Adams, she’s an optimistic Cinderella with a down-on-their-luck family who falls for a high class fella (Fred MacMurray). In Woman of the Year, she’s a high-brow journalist who falls for sports columnist Spencer Tracy in their first of nine films together. She earned Oscar nominations for both, but I dare you not to fall in love with her after watching just one. Alice Adams - Crowd: 7.5/10 // Critic: 8/10 // Woman of the Year - Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 8.5/10
Also in May…
When you’re not allowed to travel, you get creative! For Round Trip this month, I recommended 13 movies about travel that will make you feel like you took the vacation COVID-19 made you cancel (including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid). And if that’s not enough, why don’t you recreate your trip? I turned my apartment into Paris, and here’s why you might want to do the same.
Kyla and I didn’t go far back in time for most of our Gilmore Girls pop culture references on SO IT’S A SHOW? We covered three movies (or two, depending on how you see it) from the 2000s with connections to this year’s Oscars, 8 Mile and then Kill Bill. We also looked into the famous architect Stanford White and a movie he was featured in, 1981’s Ragtime, which had more connections to today’s culture than we expected.
I made another attempt at Jim Jarmusch for ZekeFilm with Broken Flowers. I still don’t get Jim Jarmusch.
My movie count in quarantine is up to 156. You can see them all on Letterboxd.

Gotham s5ep9 “The Trial of Jim Gordon” Personal Review
Tumblr media
“Well, I did not see that coming”    Warning NO spoilers below, why am I so late with this ..
“Gotham has a chance to be born anew. To return to what it was before people ripped down the trees and paved over the earth. He's trying to reunify with the mainland to save all these people. A return to filth.  Pollution. He's fighting for death, while I promise life in its purest form.” “The plants will adapt; they always do.” So IVY PEPPER is the big bad in this episode she wants to get rid of Gotham people and one of the first steps is getting rid of Jim Gordon. But in the end she´s gone and forgotten about, you´d think there would at least be some tiny reference.   Honestly I think I could really dig misanthropic Ivy (is there some plant based black metal .. hmmm ) but I don´t think they built this up well enough, that they just give her these ridiculous powers and send her out to try to kill a lot of people and now all people, and then just have that fade into nothing basically doesn´t help the case. Ugh. Also Ivy leaves Selina with that gang guy she already fought against and they repeatedly mention their history despite the guy being also under the influence of Ivy. Which is odd because .. first of all, if the history with Selina is important he should be there without being drugged. Also if his history with Selina is not important she could have just picked anyone else and probably would have had a better chance because as we all know SELINA KYLE already had a field trip with him. So why would he be a threat now? (I mean unless you count some the presence of my dame made me win the jousting effect, which is a thing but not in gotham)  Well the whole plot is Ivy gets Jim shot by Zsasz. Okay so this is stressing me out, I thought I came here for a crazy dream trip but Lee´s voice is haunting me. Can just everyone be alive n happy, pls.  Hm I don´t quite know what to make of this trial, probably because there really isn´t anything about it .. and I think most meta in this fandom did a better job plenty times already.  Nevertheless, he´s his own prosecution and nice, also is this his theatre stage voice? Before Ivy´s interruption the whole think started with JIM GORDON lamenting how the gangs get more aggressive and that they need at least a temporary CEASE FIRE to get their reunification and save lives. Oswald Cobblepot provided the venue for this and Barbara was present as well. But that does not matter too much.  Big theme this week: RESPONSIBILITY And for fucks sake, the JIM GORDON trial just beats the same crap again that I´ve been annoyed with for forever. “I did my best. Your best never seems good enough.”   “Therefore we pose one simple question: Are the people in Jim Gordon's life better off with him alive or dead?”  I mean Jim did Lee dirty that’s a valid point but she´s not the only one and most of the trial bulk is about Jim just not being able to save people. People being mad they trusted him looking for safety. And I´m gonna try to just sum up the whole rant in short: If some pyromaniac sets a fire and the firefighters can´t extinguish it quickly enough it´s still not the firefighters to blame I´m so tired of this nonsense. Also we have a hint of the same nonsense with BRUCE WAYNE: He´s thinking that he is responsible for Ra´s and Galavan but again, see above. Or in other words: What Selina Kyle said. She hit the nail on the head with: “Jeremiah blew up your house”.  There really isn´t anything to add.  “And I know that a lot of people lost a lot more, but part of me wonders if it wasn't fate.” “It wasn't. It was Jeremiah blowing up your house.” Maybe it's time to move on. (…) And how many terrible things have happened to it because of me? Galavan.  Ra's al Ghul. If this city really is my home, then maybe the best thing I can do for it is leave.”  VICTOR ZSASZ oh Victor ..  Victor in love is a delight, Victor in anything is a delight  * So first of all he gets rough with ALFRED again, okay the other way round but, idc, it was too short * Also they just like repeating things .. I´m here for Gordon only Gordon we´ve had this but tbh I´ll take it again and again.  “Okey-dokey.  Time to boogie. Hey! I'm only here for Gordon. So all of you stay down. 'Cause I see anyone and, you know bang.” “Oi, oi! Now, I heard you were looking for Jim Gordon.” “Uh-huh.”  * So technically, with Bruce doing “IvyLingo” the William Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet quote could have been just Ivy´s influence but Zsasz reading Shakespeare is just right as roses as well, //gotham language//  “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. You know, I'm really taking the time to stop and smell the roses these days.” * More is this IvyInfluence of is this something coming out of the drugged person. The name thing was such a childish take on being in love and I feel like there´s meta in this about IVY PEPPER and her age ups, or maybe not fully age ups (but I´d still like to believe it wasn´t just body age ups but brain chemistry n stuff too but still experience is another factor) but, buut instead of thinking about any implications of that I´m just gonna find Zsasz adorable  “Uh, I'm technically not allowed to say it. Her name.  Which is such a bummer, because it's the most beautiful name in the world.” “You watch him.” I could say it all day.  Hey, I will say it all day. Ivy. Ivy Pepper. Mrs. Ivy Pepper Zsasz. Oh, that sounds good.”  * “Don't worry, though. I'm just a distraction so she can finish off Jim once and for all. You know, that's how great couples work. Maybe I shouldn't have told you that. Oh, well.” Okay so Zsasz ~is~ a damn chatterbox and can´t keep his mouth shut. // On a side note. I think I went into this a bit in a fanfic and this is imho such unused potential even with Ivy 2.0. Zsasz conditioned Butch to follow orders, Ivy just does it with a little whiff of a scent. I believe Zsasz would be SO intrigued by this, like not only for doing good work professional reasons but how fascinating would this be, he´d sure want know its limits, he´d certainly would want to know how far this perfume actually could push a person, skin themselves alive? //  // On another side note: Zsasz was so close to spilling the name and he sure spilled the distraction plan which is so totally unbelievable dumb, which is why I´m wondering if 1.) Ivy would have needed to give better instructions 2.) Zsasz got some slight resistance gene to the perfume or 2.) if InLoveZsasz is just such a tremendous idiot .. //  * “Alvarez makes a hell of a Mai Thai. I can barely feel my face.” Oh I want one of those, wait no make that two. Also someone make two or more fics involving Zsasz, Alvarez and cocktails. Please.  * “I can tell you one thing. I am sick and tired of getting shot at in my own precinct.” It was about time someone said it, thanks Harvey Bullock. * “I'm sorry. Did you just say "People. Ugh"? “Lucius, what if I were to tell you I have in my possession the most intoxicating perfume you'll ever smell?” “I would tell you that's an abrupt change of topic. Can we go back to the part where you said "People. Ugh"? “ Okay that´s the only sensible and appropriate reaction anyone in this city ever had. LUCIUS FOX is the real freak on this show, cause he got his shit together. And his Ivy love grin is adorable.    * “We're perfectly bonded, like carbon and oxygen or hydrogen and oxygen “ “We do not have time for this.”  Lucius Fox and Selina Kyle being awesome. * SELINA KYLE and BRUCE WAYN being on the same “maybe” page was sweet. Also her being mindful of her claws and not touching his cheek during the kiss. “If I didn't know any better, I'd say this was a date.” “Maybe it is.” “That okay with you?” “Maybe.”  * Another repeat thing and another piece on the BARBARA KEAN turning into OSWALD COBBLEPOT list is her poisoning the gang leaders with alcohol. Oswald did it with Cannoli and well he killed them for good but it counts.  *  Also if the show had just put them side to side earlier, it could have been so good, soo good. * Also HA! I knew it. I mean my first impulse was to be like, wtf, why is everyone and their aunt trying to get on such good graces with Jim suddenly, why is Jim Gordon the key to survival now? Oswald and Barbara sure both did their fare share of courting Jim. And I did use this word on purpose because as Oswald later calls it, Barbara´s motive was not just strategical and political it was also motivated by her love for Jim Gordon.  Which clearly and totally also means: Gobblepot.  It´s just a logical extension if you follow the parallels. Oswald´s actions too were about liking Jim. And if that doesn´t convince you enough he has had that quip about Barbara knowing all about keeping Gordon happy. He sure would do the same, if Jim let him. That was all jealousy talking.  * “If we're really going to leave Gotham, we need to keep Gordon happy. You know all about that, don't you?” *  “What exactly are you doing? I'm trying to keep this city from ripping itself apart.” “So this has nothing to do with your feelings for Jim?” “What if Ed fails, and we are stuck here? This will put us in Gordon's good graces. Consider it a backup plan.” * “Controlling the gangs was not a backup plan. You saw a chance to convince James Gordon that you had changed. But he will never see you as anything but a dangerous woman keeping his child from him.”  * “Ms. Kean, this may come as a surprise, but building a submarine from scratch by yourself takes time.” Didn´t I say so .. this still stresses me out though, building a whole submarine from scratch, how even  * “I don't know what's going on inside that man's head sometimes.” “I think you'll find that he needs you a lot more than he's letting on.” Well, I need to hear it from him.”   Well and there she goes, hearing it right after Jim woke up. LESLIE THOMKINS  stays at home while Jim goes out and hunts. She´s not happy at first but then comes to terms with it I guess, Jim has this line about what else should he do not being him anymore. Well idk. Leslie doesn´t seem to be quite herself either. She went out as well, ran a fight club n stuff ..  * “I never thought that this was how my life was going to be. I have no interest in being a father myself. I always presumed that I was unfit to be one.”  Well, honestly I don´t think ALFRES PENNYWORTH can be considered fit to raise a child. What was nice this week was that he talked to Lee and offered his own insight about parenting without being a blood relative. That was a kind and considerate touch.  * I have to look up which episode it was where Jim Gordon woke up to Edward Nymga and Oswald Cobblepot singing because wow that must have left a lasting impression if this visual turns up again  * Edit: I didn’t really notice until I made gifs but Barbara´s “See, those drinks I just gave you they're poisoned. And you had two shots before everyone got here. So that should be taking effect around PAUSE now the rest of you have 48 hours before you'll need the antidote”  line was so well structured. Like the now doubles as a 1) you´ll die like now and as a 2) so ~now~ that we got that out of the way let´s get to the real business .. and I love it //Gotham language //

The following was sparked off by the sentiment ‘Thomas would think Flint a monster and would hate him for the things he’s done’ (briefly mentioned here). I didn’t want to attach the following as a reblog to poor @my-truest-flinthamilton directly because the rambling below is waaay too much of a tangent, but I find the topic really interesting, and I have Feelings on the subject.
Spoiler: I think it would be complicated, but still nah.
I do think Thomas' reaction to what Flint has done depends, among other things, on what kind of hell Thomas himself has been through. We have no concrete answers outside the fact that Thomas was taken to Oglethorpe's plantation. Unless someone bribes Thomas related answers out of Steinberg and Levine (can we do a fandom Kickstarter?), it's ultimately up to the viewer's discretion. From the events of Black Sails, there is a tenuous timeline that can be established, but it’s still up to the viewer’s discretion. I actually have an unfinished post about this, and I wish I’d finished it before this post!
Some of the TL;DR re: the timeline:
The real world maps used as props on the show demonstrate Georgia and Savannah exist within Black Sails’ world in 1715. (Thank you to the incredible sagestreet!) In the case of the latter map, it was in wide enough circulation to the point that a copy of it is displayed in Governor Raja’s office in Havana. It’s fair to say that Savannah may have been established for awhile, and if Oglethorpe plays a similar role within the world of Black Sails to his real world counterpart, he may have been in the Americas for a decade or so. My assumption in turn is that the plantation may have been around for a few years. Georgia and Savannah weren’t established until 1733 in our world, but Black Sails exists in its own ball of wibby-wobbly timey-wimey. With some extra wibby and wimey.
In regards to what Thomas himself has been through, we have a lot of variables. How long was Thomas in Bethlem for? Was he ever in Bethlem? How long has he been at the plantation? What is the treatment of those at Oglethorpe’s plantation like? For all of Oglethorpe’s pontificating, the reality of what we see on screen is no more than a small sugar cane plantation. My hope is that the treatment of those imprisoned there is still better than other plantations, but there are dangerous realities inherent to sugar cane plantations regardless. Even if Oglethorpe’s plantation was the Nicest Sugar Cane Plantation Ever—now there’s an ironic statement—it’s still a one way trip for those imprisoned there. (Slightly off-topic, but I had a very different image of what the place was going to be like from Max’s dialogue in 4x04. ‘Cared for, tended to...’ Yeah, they’re certainly tending to something.)
When it comes to Thomas’ emotional state over the lost decade, along with whatever transpired at the plantation and the possibility of being held in Bethlem, there’s also the conundrum of what Thomas was told about James and Miranda from Peter Ashe. Did Thomas think they were dead? Did he think they were alive, still out there somewhere?
The amount of hell that Thomas himself has been through would certainly contribute to how Thomas feels about his father, Peter Ashe, England, Nassau... and all that James has done as Flint. Thomas in London was already a stubborn, passionate man with a temper and very strong ideas about the world. Would he be broken after a decade ? Would that fire be even more inflamed?
The Thomas we knew in London was in an extremely privileged position, and he wanted to pardon the pirates of Nassau for both financial and social benefit. That was before Bethlem or Oglethorpe’s plantation. (Lord Thomas ‘I Want To Pardon The Pirates’ Hamilton. P.S. ‘Yes, All of the Pirates’. P.P.S. ‘Did I Fucking Stutter?’)
Judging by Hands’ talk to James in 4x04, it seems like Blackbeard was already established in prominence when Lieutenant McGraw came to Nassau. From Hands’ dialogue, it seems like Hands himself may have been one of the men that murdered Governor Thompson’s family. Thomas wanted to pardon the pirates back in London whilst Blackbeard and co. were at large, and was still willing to do so even after James brought back the news of all that had transpired there. It was a decision that ended quite badly, mind, but with James’ encouragement, Thomas decided to continue on regardless. If Thomas was willing to pardon these pirates, some of which had also done some pretty horrific things, I think it’s a fair assumption he wouldn’t be washing his hands of James and ‘Captain Flint’ so easily. Thomas was very much in love with James back in London (see the Meditations inscription, among other things), and Thomas still seemed very much in love with him from the reunion in the finale.
[Tangent: how the hell did Hands hear that Flint used to be a Navy man, and that McGraw was there when they took back Nassau from the English?! Only Miranda would have 100% known the specifics.]
In regards to how Thomas views people and humanity in general, we can also only look to the episodes themselves. As Miranda says in 1x06, he was Mr. Devil's Advocate back in London: Thomas would have played that game with you from dusk until dawn. And everything you hold sacred, he'd leave in tatters. Not from malice or hate, but from love. From a desire to see the yoke of shame lifted from your shoulders.
Considering what we know of how Thomas reacts when he’s dragged off to Bethlem, and how loyal and protective he is over Miranda and James, I can’t imagine that he would be all that aggrieved by Flint killing Alfred Hamilton or Peter Ashe. (Miranda, 2x05: Before they took him away, he made me promise him that no matter what happened next, that you and I would take care of each other). Again, pardoning the murderous pirates of Nassau wasn’t really an issue for Thomas in London. Alfred Hamilton and Peter Ashe destroyed the lives of Thomas, Miranda, and James—and ten years later, Miranda is now dead because of it.
Speaking of darling Miranda, I think it’s also important to look to Miranda as a counterpoint to Thomas, in regards to her feelings on James, and James as Flint. Thomas and Miranda absolutely are not the same in personality or actions (the latter is more sensible and realistic than the former, among many other things!), but they have a similar character trajectory. We don’t know anything about Miranda’s backstory, but considering she married the son of an Earl, she must have come from at least decent social standing. Thomas and Miranda are both outcasts from society in different ways: Miranda, as a brilliant, forward thinking woman who society wants to keep in place, and Thomas, the radical Lord who is whispered to be mad by half of Whitehall and who’s sexuality is punishable by death. In London, both Thomas and Miranda fall head over heels in love with James McGraw. After Ashe’s betrayal, they are separated from each other, and both go from London high society to a terrible and horrifying fall.
Throughout all of James’ years as Flint, Miranda never stopped loving James. Miranda didn’t think of James as a monster, and never treated him as such. Miranda was the only character in the 1715 timeline of Black Sails that looked upon James wholly without fear. She was afraid for him, but never of him. In the killing Alfred Hamilton, James and Miranda were partners, with James wielding the blade. We see that Miranda didn’t approve of all of James’ choices, but we know how much she loved James regardless. ETA: I had completely forgotten about Miranda’s 4x08 dialogue re: Flint, until Bean’s gif set reminded me: You can defend that man. There are good arguments in defense of him.
And, god, my poor beloved Miranda, who finally got to express her own fury at the world after the horrifying realization of how deeply her little trio had been betrayed, had it all cut short by a bullet to the head.
(not. over. her.)
Regardless of how you read the specifics of the relationship between Thomas and Miranda, I also think it’s important to consider the love between them in regards to how Thomas would react to some of Flint's actions. We see how deeply Thomas and Miranda cared for each other, both from Miranda's present day dialogue and through their interactions in the London flashbacks. So how does Thomas react when he finds out what happened to Miranda? (I’m still so bitter that we didn’t get to see.) How does he react to what James did in the aftermath of Miranda’s loss, and of Peter’s part in it all? In both London and in Charlestown, we saw Miranda’s enraged fury over the loss of Thomas and the revelation of how they all were betrayed. Miranda wanted to see Charlestown burn. I have no idea if Thomas would want destruction on such a scale, but it seems wrong to dismiss that Thomas wouldn’t have his own grief and fury about Miranda’s loss, especially considering how much her cared for her.
Miranda and James went through horrific emotional trauma over the decade since London. Trauma that shaped their actions, their emotions—specifically, their rage. Thomas, at the very least, would have gone through a lot of emotional trauma, with the possibility of some horrifying physical trauma as well. I don’t think it’s a reach to say he would have his own heartbreak and rage at the world in turn.
I also have to link to @sidewaystime‘s wonderful Thomas meta that expands on what we can infer of his character from the text of Black Sails itself. In the case of this post, I’m linking to it with special emphasis on Thomas as a character (the man isn’t exactly innocently Mr. Soft and Fluffy), alongside his dynamic with Miranda and James. Also, just go through sidewaystime’s tags anyway to read all of her godly Miranda meta and meta in general ohmygosh. ohmygosh
All of this to say: from what Black Sails itself shows us, I don't think Thomas would hate James, nor think of him as a monster. That’s not even bringing into the equation of what Thomas may have been through himself, as he hasn’t exactly been sitting around picking daisies for the last decade. I think it's fair to say some elements of Captain Flint Thomas would support, and some of it he would not.
..but Thomas hating James and thinking of him purely as a monster?
Miranda didn’t. I can’t see that Thomas would, either.

White Flame
Chapter 6
Warnings: Blood, Psychological Horror
General Summary:  Royal/ Magical AU. As their two Kingdoms get closer to a war, the past keeps on hovering around their choices. Prince Ivan has a hard time controlling his magical powers while being tormented by a mysterious ghost and Prince Alfred embarcs in seeking a revenge that might cost more than it’s worth it.
Preview: After some minutes of his useless rambling, Alfred stormed out of the room, his blue eyes had watered at the thought of forgetting his father’s death in order to maintain a hypocrite relation with that other prince.
How could Arthur ask him that? He refused to talk with that tyrant, he knew what they had done to the people of the Firebird and still Arthur called them honorable rulers?
You are not my father
The table was enormous, Alfred had seen it before but every time, he’d found something new.
It was his second favorite place in the palace, the first one was the throne as he used to acompain his father there, but after his death, it was no longer fun to be there. The old, worn out carvings gave the place a dull aspect, and seeing Arthur replacing his father’s place made his heart ache.
The meeting hall was more interesting these days, full of counselors and generals, Alfred’s gaze fell on the outlines in the table, a detailed map was carefully painted, signaling each border, river and mountain of their kingdom as well as the others. The figures representing the troops had been retrieved, the map was ignored by everyone, as they discussed the upcoming celebration.
Why should they celebrate?
He could certainly understand the peace offering, it was a miracle the other kingdom had accepted, Alfred was aware that the moment his father ceased breathing, the troops retreated, they had lost and Arthur was declared on charge until new advice.
The idea of begging for a truce made him shook with anger, why did they had to retreat? why didn’t the soldiers kept fighting, with or without their king, they had a duty to fulfill, how could they surrender so easily? did they forget to fight for their families, their people?
The boundaries between right and wrong that his father had taught him, were crumbling under Arthur’s choices. He had accepted the deal and he was offering a celebration, to strengthen the relations between the Kingdoms. That Alfred could understand, but since Arthur declared the terms of it, a question started to nag at him, a question that he decided to voice out.
With a clear voice, he asked. “Why must we pay for it all?”
The room fell silent, all of them acknowledging his presence for the first time.
He could see Arthur’s green eyes scanning him with disdain. He gave a long sigh before answering. “Alfred, I appreciate your concern towards official matters, your presence here is... of great importance, but for now, is better if you just observe and stay silent. ”
Alfred frowned, what if he had sneaked into the meeting? he was the rightful heir after all. “But-”
“I’m not asking you, Alfred. It’s an order. If you want to stay here, you will only listen.” Arthur’s voice was firm,
Arthur’s words had let him shocked, asking him to be sensible, to favour peace and to seek an amiable dialogue and even friendship with the prince from the eastern Kingdom.
Alfred felt his blood boil with rage, his voice echoed in the room. “You can’t give me orders, you are not my father!”
Arthur seemed to be shocked at first but his expression changed into a frown, his eyes averted from the prince, a few whispers were heard, but soon the dialogue was resumed as if Alfred hadn’t uttered a word.
After some minutes of his useless rambling, Alfred stormed out of the room, his blue eyes had watered at the thought of forgetting his father’s death in order to maintain a hypocrite relation with that other prince.
How could Arthur ask him that? He refused to talk with that tyrant, he knew what they had done to the people of the Firebird and still Arthur called them honorable rulers?
Seeking solace, he locked himself in the library. Arthur wouldn’t find him there as it was obvious he deemed him to be a childish fool.
Arthur had showed his true colors with such a simple act, one thing was sure, Alfred would take the crown from him as soon as he could.
He sighed, registering the shelves, full of dusty books, except for the ones he had retrieved for his lessons. For now, he had to pretend he was in agreement with Arthur’s commands.
Something he had learned from his father was that he must fight for what was right and noble, but for that, he needed backup, he couldn’t do everything alone.
The books as Gilbert had said, provided the necessary knowledge to recognize the enemy. They were powerful, acquiring the Firebird was a tactical achievement, they had opening through the river, right into the city, the only obstacle for them seemed to be the climate as they seemed to have an extremely harsh weather and their side of the territory had the river with a thick layer of ice covering it.
Alfred needed to convince prince Ludwig of helping him against them.
Luckily for him, he knew someone of influence there, Gilbert was his tutor for a short span of time, before his father died, before Arthur dismissed him out of spite, saying he’d take over that duty when in reality, he dismissed Alfred every time he tried to approach him, and barely talked to him.
His excuse was that he wasn’t an appropriate mentor, appropriate for what? Alfred didn’t know.
He admitted that Gilbert had a sublime presence, he’d refused his crown in order to become a knight, he was a good storyteller and a strict tutor, Alfred had been esceptic of his achievements at first as he was always bragging, but quickly realized he had a reason to.
Alfred wanted to become just as competent if not more than him.
A strong and disciplined king would result in a equally powerful kingdom and that was exactly what Alfred wanted, for his people to be strong willed and to never bend the knee again.
---
Ivan could hear the distant sounds of a clock.
He sweared that each night the sound was louder, he had been tempted to snatch it from his father’s hands and throw it into the fireplace or something last night.
He glared at the closed door, grunting and covering his head with the covers.
At least he didn't have to worry about Natalya for a while. Her father was too preoccupied with his newly acquired duties and they'd be moving to the Firebird once it was restored.
Even though the compromise was still taking place, Ivan was glad she didn't mention the incident and seemed to act reasonably, requesting a constant exchange of letters for the time being.
His father didn't need another reason to despise him.
The wooden door creaked, and he heard approaching footsteps.
A strange, tender tone, coated his father's words. “Vanya, how have you been?”
Ivan moved the covers out of his face, trying to read his expression in the dark room. “Father... shouldn’t you be resting?”
The light coming from the window outlined his father's face, showing sickly pale skin and dark circles under his eyes. He gave a long sigh, looking back at the door. “Perhaps... why are you awake?”
“I...it’s nothing...”
Ivan felt the icy hand placed in his head, the King's eyes were gentle, not giving their usual glare. “Tell me, son, what worries you?”
He looked down, sitting on the bed, losing the cold touch of his father. “I heard something… it has been like that for a few nights”
Ivan saw him grin. “Is it a clock? I advise you to read your grandfather’s diary, you might learn a thing or two." The smile grew wider, the voice changing unnaturally low, the violet eyes turning blue. "He was a bit… strange, but wiseness and craziness sometimes come together. ”
With widened eyes, the prince raised his voice. “You are not my father!”
“I obviously am not," the man said, his face contorting in a expression of mocking indignation "and here was I thinking you’d grown fond of me, are you that desperate for his approval?”
Washed over by a wave of uneasiness, Ivan wondered why he didn't notice the man's military attire before, the bluish tone coating his skin.
He gathered enough courage to stand up, facing the man with a frown. “What are you doing here?”
“I’m just collecting an old debt, is there something you need?” The man seemed to float around him, placing his cold hands on Ivan's shoulders.
He shook his head, feeling chills running down his spine “No, thank you, I don’t need to set my own home on fire.”
A cold hand stroke Ivan's hair. “But you were thinking about it”
“The clock, not my room.”
The man's silvery voice was merely a whisper. "Your father wanted to burn it too"
Ivan turned back, staring right into those blue eyes. "Of course he would, he'd never give it to me."
"Does that bother you? Do you hate him?" The words echoed in Ivan's mind as if it were his own conscience questioning him.
He shook his head.
The tall figure stepped closer. “I’m talking about then, you wanted to kill him. Unluckily for you, I was helping your father. But do not think I am unloyal, from now on, I will help you, that is... if you manage to do things the right way." Leaning into his ear, the man whispered.  "Say, do you want another wolf?”
Ivan stepped back, opening the door and running down the hall. A thunderous laughter echoing.
When he reached his father's door, he tried to push it open, his hands trembling when they reached the handle. Gaining odd looks from the guards.
In his panic haze, Yekaterina's alarmed voice reached him.  “Vanya, what are you doing?”
He turned to see his sister's confused face. Answering her hurriedly. “Katya, there is someone in there, We have to-”
He paused, turning to the guards and scolding them. “Open the doors! Protect him!”
The doors were opened, no one was there except for his father, laying on the bed.
Ivan's voice wavered, he shook Katya's arm. “I… I saw it, Katya, please, believe me, that stupid clock was ticking...I-.”
His words were cut by his sister's hand covering his mouth.
She glanced wearily at their father. "I'm sorry for the disturbance, father, keep resting."
Katya frowned at him, probably about to scold him for his outburst. She took the handle of the door, closing it slightly.
She paused, staring inside the room intently, her voice wavering this time.
"Father?"

Can your Powerpoint Presentation Rival TV Advertising?
Do you ever before question why some PowerPoint Presentations are a lot far better than others? Why do some have incredible powers of persuasion, while others simply birthed you to death? TV commercials make use of these advertising and marketing methods to hold as well as amaze their audiences. You can too, if you adhere to these attempted as well as confirmed methods.
Step 1: Kaboom Them Into Awakening! Ever before seen exactly how most discussions start with, "Welcome to this presentation ... blah, blah, blah." You do not see a lot of TELEVISION advertisements do that. They slam into you at a zillion miles a hr and ensure you're listening. So How Do YOU Do That When You Don't Have A Moving Picture? The method is to begin with something that's completely separated with the presentation. For example, you could be offering automobiles yet you could begin with, "Eventually in paradise ..." That's an excellent get up call for an audience that's half asleep. You're selling cars and trucks aren't you? What has paradise got to do with autos? The dissonance of the idea has forced their attention. Now that you've obtained their interest, you've got to gently massage therapy your message right into it. For instance, you might simply suggest that God created man, female, and then gave them a vehicle. And that is only the begin. Step 2: Always Narrate Did you see Titanic, guided by James Cameron? Couldn't you tell that story with sensible precision? Most people can. All our flick and fantastic TELEVISION commercials remain in a tale style. Do the same with your discussion. Think it through. Build up a story first, then work your discussion into it. It will not just provide your discussion some focus (as well as story), yet will make it simpler for your target market to keep in mind the series of what you're stating. As an example, where are Adam and also Eve going in the automobile? Did they have a break down? Exactly how well does the air-conditioning job as they drive through the desert? Action 3: Use Thriller, Not Secret Alfred Hitchcock was a master of thriller. He informed you that the murderer was right at the start. So you and also every one in the audience understood that was going to kill whom. Everybody in the theater understood, other than the hero (or heroine), who was going to obtain killed. Which drove you crazy. How could they be so dumb? You all understood that the awesome was. Why could not the hero see it? That's what kept you riveted to the display the entire 90 mins. If you establish the characters in your discussion early and work in a component of thriller, you can keep the audience on the edge of their seats. Step 4: Don't Birthed Them with Your Solutions. Bring Up the Issue! The majority of interaction harps sleepily around remedies. You don't intend to do that. Check out you. People are obsessed with issues. They do not walk all excited and also delighted. Most people walk with their heads in their hands. When you bring up their specific issue they snap out of their slumber in a mighty rush, and also focus on what you're saying. What you require to do initial is raise that trouble-- and also bring it up in all its glory! Repaint a gory picture. You might intend to read my short article: Is your solution your largest problem? Only after you have actually made them really feel the pain, need to you bring out the remedy. The most effective TELEVISION commercials always make you feel the discomfort. As they state, "No pain, no gain." Find out that, as well as use it. Step 5: Decrease Danger Why do people claim, "I 'd like to think about it?" The only factor is since you have not lowered the threat to minus fifty. While there is threat, my brain is still doing a RAM check. If there is no threat, I've got absolutely nothing to lose. So, just how can you lower threat? TELEVISION advertisements offer refund guarantees, test durations, free test drives. Surely you can be more creative than some ad person. Get that take the chance of down reduced, like a limbo rocker. Just how low can you go? Action 6: Allow Your Target Market Know They're Not Guinea Pigs Hey! If you have actually obtained a product to market, and you're not utilizing testimonials, you're missing out majorly. Also if the item is yet to be launched, you can have pre-launch tests. All of it accumulates expectations for your final pitch. This is likewise another kind of threat decrease. If someone else has actually used your product and services and loved it, you need to go into the core of that romance. Action 7: Close the # @US$%* & ^ Sale! I don't recognize how many times I have actually seen a terrific presentation that takes me to paradise, and leaves me there wondering, how I'm going to obtain back to planet. You have actually got to shut the sale! Every discussion needs to end with a call to action and also choice on the customer's part. There are a zillion publications as well as tapes on closing a sale around. Brian Tracy has some fantastic sound tapes on Winning Closing Strategies (www.nightingale.com). Gain from the pros, and also transform a la dee dah presentation into a full blooded sale! Step 8: Cause a Quirky Ending! Every movie and every ad does it. They wrap it up in such a way you never ever expect. There's nothing worse than developing assumptions, answering all the inquiries, and then having a weak finishing. Your end has to be like lightning-- unanticipated, brief and dazzling! It will make sure that your product or service (or quarterly report for that matter) gets maximum focus. Otherwise you're just emphasizing without any power!

CANNIBAL COMEDY
The very thought of real cannibalism makes us sick – which is probably why we find it morbidly delightful in comedies.
To whet your appetite here is a link to a 1970 Monty Python cannibal skit:
We’re inspired this week by the release of the absurdist cannibal French film Slack Bay which premiered at Cannes 2016.
 SLACK BAY (2016)
Director Bruno Dumont cites Peter Sellers, Monty Python, and Laurel and Hardy as cinematic influences for his delightful foray into his absurdist farce.
His cast is a mashup of pros and amateurs. The elder Van Peteghems are played by the cream of French cinema, Juliette Binoche and Fabrice Luchini, while the Bruforts are played by local nonactors whose authentic gruffness undercuts the stars’ antic flamboyance beat for beat. Dumont raises conflicts of class, character, and gender into an off-kilter legend.
He is equally brazen with his bold mashup of genres — cops-and-cannibals, high-society-drawing-room, and rustic-outdoors comedy, set in a French seaside resort village in 1910. The bourgeois Van Peteghem clan vacation in their villa overlooking the bay; the Brufort family of mussel-gatherers and ferrymen live on a ramshackle farm in the lowlands. Several tourists have disappeared, and two loopy police inspectors investigate in vain—what they don’t know is that the Bruforts have been eating them.
As the grisly mysteries mount and love blossoms between the family’s transgender teen and the son of a local fisherman, Binoche and company ratchet the slapstick up to eleven.
THE COOK, THE THIEF, THE WIFE THE LOVER (1989)
Peter Greenaway’s sumptuous genre-bender stars Helen Mirren as the wife to an English gangster named Albert Spica who finds herself trapped, offended, and disgusted by her husband’s thuggish ways, as night after night he takes over the dining hall of the restaurant he owns.
She spots a quiet bookish type who dines alone and becomes entangled in a secret affair with him—that is until her crook husband finds out. Spica kills the guy, but Mirren’s Georgina gets the last laugh—when she brings the body back to the restaurant’s chef, makes him cook her deceased lover, and forces her husband to eat the body.
     EATING RAOUL (1982)
Director/co-writer Paul Bartel stars as Paul Bland, who with his wife Mary (Mary Woronov) play a prudish married couple living in Hollywood who take to murdering swingers in their apartment building for a little extra cash.
Robert Beltran plays Raoul, a small time criminal who witnesses the Blands’ dirty business and strikes a bargain for his silence, sharing the profits from the murder victims (Raoul also strikes up a sexual relationship with Mary).
Eating Raoul successfully walks the tightrope between delight and disgust — its absurdist sense of humor makes it an enjoyable romp even when its subject matter becomes rather bleak.
Bartel, a graduate of the “Roger Corman School,” keeps things lively, and often times the movie plays like a sitcom gone pitch black. The characters were meant to return for a sequel entitled Bland Ambition, which Bartel wrote with original screenwriter Richard Blackburn, but it failed to materialize.
DELICATESSEN (1991)
Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet became instant cult darlings with Delicatessen, their darkly delicious debut. Set in a steampunky, post-apocalyptic Paris, the movie concerns an apartment building and the building’s bizarre inhabitants.
Caro and Jeunet toy with the interrelationships among the tenants — in the film’s trailer, the squeaky springs of a couple making love echo, in one form or another, throughout the building.
The man making love in the trailer is the butcher (Jean-Claude Dreyfus), who serves as the de facto landlord of the building and offers up cannibalistic delicacies. Caro and Jeunet are working in full-on comic book mode here, and even the cannibalism is delivered on screen with a dash of madcap surrealism.
The movie’s combination of gruesomeness and absurdity has aged well, as have its playful touch with such a dark subject.
SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET (2007)
Tim Burton’s adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s beloved 1979 musical, is based on the exploits of the so-called barber (Johnny Depp) who gives his customers too close a shave. This is old school horror movie stuff, with a touch of dark humor.
The cannibal part comes in when the grisly and greedy Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter), becomes Todd’s partner in crime, disposing of the bodies by dicing them up into meat pies and serving them to the patrons of the pub she owns. Burton adds touches of his signature dark whimsy — such as a musical number composed of shots of people getting their throats slit.
There’s a love story here too, and a tale of revenge, plus Todd trying to reconnect with his long lost daughter. But on purely cinematic terms, it’s really all about the murders and the meat.
       CANNIBAL! THE MUSICAL (1993)
Before South Park, before Book of Mormon, Cannibal! was Matt Stone and Trey Parker’s low-budget first feature, based on Parker’s obsession with one of the grisliest episodes from the Old West – a guide eating his companions after running into trouble in the Rocky Mountains. Perfect material for a feel-good musical.
It references the ‘Donner Party’, the other infamous case of cannibalism from the era. Set in 1873, this musical focuses on Alfred Packer who is accused of cannibalizing members of his West-traveling party.
Given Matt & Trey’s sensibilities, it’s no surprise that the film is an absurdist farce—Japanese are cast as Indians, a cyclops’s eye spurts pus, and Alfred has a kung-fu fight with a fur trapper named Frenchy.
Cannibal! is surprisingly light on gore for a Troma Team release concentrating instead on sight gags, sex jokes, and absurd songs like “Shpadoinkle” and “Hang the Bastard.”
