The War was over.
Shikamaru had it on good authority that Naruto and Sasuke had made up, and he wouldn’t be surprised to learn the pair had bonded. They were meant to be after all. Or at least, many of their peers thought so.
It was the reason Shikamaru had yet to go looking for Naruto. He wasn’t certain he could handle another heartache so soon. Mourning Shikaku was hard enough. He didn’t have it in him to mourn what could have been. What Naruto and him had shared and what they could have had together.
Thankfully, Tsunade and Kakashi kept him busy.
Shikamaru managed to avoid facing the truth for a little under 24 hours before Tsunade was summoned to the hospital. The message said Naruto wasn’t doing as well as they had thought. His recovery had slowed significantly.
It made sense if they had locked up his mate right after they bonded.
Still, Shikamaru followed Tsunade to Naruto’s hospital room.
The scent of an omega in distress hit them immediately. Yet Naruto wasn’t acting like one. He was sitting with crossed legs on his bed, listening to whatever Sakura had been telling him with a soft smile on his lips.
He wasn’t hiding in a nest — an instinctual response to trauma. He wasn’t crying or dissociating as Shikamaru had hypothesized.
“Baachan —!” Naruto started.
However, he promptly interrupted himself as he noticed Shikamaru behind Tsunade. His blue eyes widened, and his face did something complicated, his emotions unclear to Shikamaru.
“Shikamaru,” Naruto said at last.
It was barely a whisper, but it still caught Shikamaru off guard. As did Naruto’s next move. The omega got up from his bed, and the alpha took a step forward on instinct.
Was he even supposed to be standing?
Naruto swiftly crossed the distance between them, his exhaustion betrayed by nothing, but a faint blush. Shikamaru briefly thought about pressing his lips to the overheated skin.
But that was before all his thoughts came to a halt as Naruto put his only arm around him. The omega brought their bodies together, leaving no space whatsoever between them. Naruto’s face found itself pressed against Shikamaru’s neck — his nose rubbing his scent patch — and Shikamaru’s breath hitched.
This wasn’t mated-omega’s behavior. Naruto hadn’t received a thorough education on Secondary Genders — Shikamaru knew as much from their shared childhood — but he couldn’t imagine him disrespecting his mate like this. That and the fact Shikamaru couldn’t smell Sasuke on him at all.
He also had a pretty good view of Naruto’s neck. His scent patch was missing, but so was any trace of a mating bite. Had Kurama healed it already? Or was Naruto truly unbonded?
Did it matter?
Naruto was in distress and seeking comfort from Shikamaru, and truthfully, it was all that really mattered to him at that moment.
He took off his scent patch, having completely forgotten about Tsunade and Sakura’s presence.
If he believed Temari, Shikamaru smelled of the forest and something akin to a campfire. Naruto smelled of sunshine, as ridiculous as it might sound. A warm summer breeze, red peppers — the ones used to spice up ramens — and something else he never could put his finger on but was what made Naruto’s scent unique, and the best Shikamaru had ever encountered.
Shikamaru’s arms closed around Naruto and the omega immediately relaxed further against him. His scent was turning from obvious distress to… Was it happiness? In any case, it soothed Shikamaru’s pain. At least partially.
His head fell to Naruto’s shoulder before he tentatively imitated the omega and brushed his nose against Naruto’s scent gland. The omega jumped slightly before clinging to him even harder. His scent got sweeter. It was intoxicating.
“Well, I suppose I’m not needed after all,” Tsunade said.
Shikamaru tensed but didn’t move. Naruto mumbled something against his neck, his lips brushing Shikamaru’s skin in the process and distracting him from trying to make sense of any of it.
“What was that brat?” Tsunade asked.
“I said I’m fine,” Naruto said. Or more like exclaimed a little too close to Shikamaru’s ear but he still couldn’t bring himself to break their embrace.
“Hmhm… You know, we would have understood if you had told us you two were pre-bonded, Shikamaru. Kakashi is actually more capable than he likes Iruka-Sensei and you to think.” Tsunade added.
“We are not —” he started.
There was a slight tremor in Naruto’s hold on his jacket. He needed to choose his next words carefully.
“There hadn’t been any time for anything of the sort,” he said in the end. “Also now the war is over, I was hoping to ask him — you, Naruto — out, on a dat —?”
“Yes!”
They moved just enough to be able to look each other in the eyes. Naruto’s flushed face matched his own.
“But we already went on dates, no?” Naruto asked. He sounded uncertain. “I mean, you invited me to eat every time I got back to the village and I thought… Iruka and Kakashi said you were courting me?”
Iruka and Kakashi, uh? The latest was lucky he was Hokage.
“I was,” he said. “I just wasn’t sure you were aware of it… or if it was something you wanted.”
“Why wouldn’t I want to date you? You are… you! And you were my first friend!”
“Yeah, and you are you, Naruto,” Shikamaru replied. “Usually, omega bond to alphas who match their strength or are even stronger, I’m not —”
“You are strong!” Naruto protested. “And even if you weren’t, I don’t need protection, I need…”
Shikamaru wished they weren’t having this conversation in front of an audience but here they were. (What a drag, ah.)
“I love you,” he said as Naruto trailed off.
There was a squeaky sound in the background that Shikamaru suspected to be Sakura’s reaction while Naruto didn’t outwardly react at first. However, because he had been paying attention to it previously, Shikamaru noticed the way Naruto’s heart skipped a beat.
“Oh,” Naruto said. The brightest of smiles suddenly appeared on his face, his blue eyes watering slightly as they never left Shikamaru’s. “I love you too. A lot.”
And well, maybe all hope wasn’t lost after all.

Hehe, I think lots of people love Shikamaru and his obsession~ I decided to write about what happens just after they met for the first time, hope you enjoy~
Omega!Shikamaru x Alpha!Reader
Summary: Meeting his obsession at only age 5, Shikamaru is lucky enough to have his entire lifetime with his obsession at his side. Shikaku doesn't feel quite so lucky.
Word count: 1.25k
Warnings: None.
Shikaku didn’t know whether to be proud, irritated or resigned at the situation that had been suddenly dumped in his lap. The burn of your parents’ suspicious eyebrow raises had him leaning towards the latter two emotions, but the happy purrs his son was letting at his feet, massaging his baby Obsessions hands in his own, tipped the scale back towards proud.
He still couldn’t believe that his son, barely five years old, had already found his obsession. He had been dreading the day this happened, remembering the way his own father had had to reign him in when he fell for Yoshino, and anticipating an older Shikamaru giving him some good old-fashioned karma. But it happening this soon wasn’t something he had predicted, nor something he was ready for. Even in his worst-case imaginings, he had thought about a hormonal fifteen-year-old Shikamaru, never a five-year-old that had only just started learning how to control his emotions.
Shikaku sighed and rubbed his face with his hand. The whole situation was troublesome.
“I understand that this is shocking, it is a surprise to us as well, Naras rarely find their obsessions this young,” his wife explained to your parents. He was so glad she was here to help him handle this. “But it isn’t something that can be taken back, nor something that can be stopped, so our best course of action is to figure out how we’re going to move forward.”
“This isn’t our first-time hearing about the Nara obsession instinct,” your mother said, seemingly the more relaxed one of your two parents, if the way your father was perched on the edge of the sofa like a tightly coiled spring was anything to go by. “But we had planned on only allowing sleepovers once they turned eight, so hearing about the expectation of sleepovers so suddenly isn’t easy to digest. I don’t understand why playdates can’t suffice.”
Shikaku tuned out Yoshino’s response, knowing that she would handle everything while ruffling as few feathers as possible. Well, provided your parents remained civil and open-minded. If they started demanding things that would hurt Shikamaru, Shikaku would have to pull her back before she decided violence was the best way to solve the problem. But seeing as the coast was clear for the moment, he turned his gaze towards his only son.
Shikamaru still had a tight grip on your hand, but his full attention was on your face now. He was leaning in just a little too close as you spoke, but you didn’t seem to mind. At least the silver lining was that Shikamaru had picked a relaxed baby alpha to obsess over.
“Your hair is very pretty,” you said quietly, a little smile on your face. “I like it.”
Furious purrs erupted from Shikamaru, his little face flushing in pride. Shikaku watched with amusement as Shikamaru immediately used his free hand to try and pull his hair out of his ponytail. His tiny fingers fumbled for a moment, but he eventually got it loose and yanked it out, pulling a few strands out along with it without so much as a flinch.
Shikaku remembered that feeling all too well, the way the desire to please Yoshino, make her happy with him, overshadowed everything else, even pain. When he first chose her, he would have been able to walk over a field of glass without flinching if he thought it would make her smile.
“You can touch it if you want,” Shikamaru said, practically vibrating with excitement as he leant his head forward, his now loose hair falling forwards towards you. “I don’t mind.”
“Wow, so soft!” you exclaimed, running your fingers through his hair. “Do you wash it with fairy dust?”
“No, just shampoo, but I also use conditioner,” Shikamaru announced proudly, pushing his head into your hand like a cat.
Shikaku smothered a snort. He imagined that Shikamaru would no longer roll his eyes and try to get out of using conditioner at bath time, something he was sure would delight his wife.
“We just can’t agree to that many nights with them away from home, away from us, they’re our child,” your mother said, just as Shikaku turned one ear back to the main conversation. “We might be able to divide the four nights in half though. We could have Shikamaru stay with us for two nights, but we’d need support navigating their relationship because we don’t know what’s normal or-“
Confident that things were going well enough that he wouldn’t have to restrain his wife, Shikaku turned back to his son and the baby alpha sitting on the floor beside him.
“Can I plait your hair, please?” you asked his son, still idly petting him.
Only yesterday, the same question had come from Ino, although the tone had been a little more demanding, and his son had rolled his eyes, refused, called Ino troublesome and gone to hide upstairs to take a nap.
His response now was like night and day. Shikaku watched his son’s face light up, his head bobbing up and down instantly.
“Yes, yes, whenever you want,” he said, falling over himself to turn around and present you with the back of his head. He scooted backwards until he was almost on your lap and then folded his hands together on his lap, waiting with barely contained excitable energy.
It was so strange seeing his son like this. He was used to his lazy petulance when face with chores, the competitive gleam in his eyes when they played shogi, his thinking face when he was presented a new puzzle or mystery, but this tidal wave of genuine, open affection and eagerness for companionship was something Shikaku had never seen.
“Thanks! You’re the best, Shika!” you said, separating his hair into three parts.
His son looked ready to ascend to a different plane of being.
This whole thing was a mess, Shikaku though, rubbing at his eyes. He wasn’t looking forward to the hundreds of tantrums he’d have to diffuse, the weird impulses he’d have to redirect or having to host another five-year-old in his house all the time. However, the pure happiness radiating off his son was more than worth all the bad. He was glad that Shikamaru would have his obsession with him for his entire life, and maybe it was wishful thinking, but hopefully Shikamaru would be used enough to his obsession and coping mechanisms that the hormonal nightmare of teenagerhood wouldn’t be so bad.
Shikaku gave the two children one more glance, vaguely amused to see Shikamaru silently mouthing ‘my alpha’ over and over again as you focused on plaiting his hair, before properly turning back to the conversation he was supposed to be a part of.
Everything would work out; he would make it so.

BONUS:
“Well, we should probably head off now,” your father said, standing up, holding the newly drawn up custody arrangement. “We’re having dinner with my parents tonight. Darling, time to leave, go and get your shoes on, please.”
“WHAT?! NO!”
“Here we go,” Shikaku sighed, trying to intercept Shikamaru before he got a hold on the baby alpha. Too late.
“Shikamaru, let go, they have to go home,” he said, kneeling down on the floor with them both.
“No!” his son whined, tears gathering on his water line. “They’re my alpha! Mine!”
“Shikamaru, that wasn’t a suggestion. Let them go.”
Shikamaru only growled at him, so Shikaku just started pulling him off you by the scruff.
“Shikamaru, stop struggling, stop- Ow! You little- He just bit me!”

Cologne Shikamaru x Alpha!Reader
“Stop! You can’t go out like that,” Shikamaru was off the bed in a moment as you walked out of the bathroom. You immediately started checking your uniform for what he was talking about.
“Is something wrong?” You were startled when Shikamaru buried his head in your neck and breathed deeply.
“You smell really good. Why do you smell so good?” Shikamaru accused.
“Uh, I bought new cologne.” You shrugged.
“Why did you buy new cologne? Are you trying to impress someone?” Shikamaru was getting worked up. “I can’t let you out of the house like this! An omega might try to steal you.”
“Shikamaru, it’s just cologne. You’re going to make me late for my shift at the mission desk,” you rolled your eyes.
“So you want omegas throwing themselves at you?”
“No omega is going to throw themselves at me. Practically the entire village was at our wedding and everyone in this village knows not to get between a Nara and their mate.” You sighed.
“You can’t leave the house smelling this good,” Shikamaru scolded you, he started scenting you and you sighed, knowing it was the only way that you would be able to leave on time. Soon enough, the cologne was covered by the scent of angry omega.
“That’s enough, Shikamaru. Can I go now?” You rolled your eyes.
“Yes, you better not speak to any omegas.” Shikamaru crossed his arms.
“I’m working with two omegas tonight, Shikamaru. Two mated omegas.” You quickly corrected yourself. “We will just be working together,”
“You better be.” Shikamaru glared. You gave him a quick kiss and left before he changed his mind, resigning yourself to getting teased for smelling like angry omega all night.

Naruto who comes back and is immediately the most eligible Omega in the village. He is… less than thrilled if he’s being honest because there’s only one person that he wants that kind of attention from and he hasn’t presented yet.
He’s just trying to go about his day and the most obnoxious alpha is trying to tell him that being a Shinobi is no place for an omega and it’s been dragging on for so long.
Then he sees Shikamaru out of the corner of his eye. Then he gets the most mouthwatering scent of pine and smoke that overtakes the civilian alpha’s scent. Then he’s moving, and Shikamaru’s voice is rumbling in his ear as they hit the ground in the middle of the street with Naruto’s face pressed against Shika’s throat.
And for the first time since he left Konoha two and a half years ago, Naruto finally feels at home.

ALPHA! NARUTO
naruto is a joyous and energetic person, his gift are as vibrant as him. in order to court you, he would definitely take you out on some dates. ichiraku ramen sounds like the perfect place to begin his courting! it's a place which holds countless of precious memories for him and he wants you to get to know him better. he's someone who speaks his mind, so I think he'll really talk openly about his desires and interests in you, it's one of the rare times he's being serious and it's truly a sight to see.
onto a more materialistic approach, naruto will 100% gifts you plushies. he thinks it's an adorable way to connect the both of you. extra points if the plushie is the effigy of kurama! he will sometimes scent it, sometimes not. it all depends on how you react to them, he'll pay attention to your reactions and decides if that was the right move.
I also think naruto will choose a more natural and spontaneous courting, surprising you with cute and funny outings. helping you escape at night so you can both see the stars together. he'll throw cute notes at you to cheer you up during class...
overall, naruto just wishes to spend more time with you, make you laugh and smile. he really considers your happy face as a reward, it literally makes his day. he wants the both of you to know each other and grow closer.
ALPHA! SASUKE
now sasuke is definitely more reserved in his approach and less explicit about his feelings for you. nonetheless, he won't stay on the sidelines and let other alphas steal you from him. I don't think he'll give you gifts at the very beginning, he's prudent and will first and foremost test the waters by subtly scenting you at times and assess your reaction. if he considers it a green light, he'll start acting more assertive. probably a few stargazing sessions to begin with and when you start to get closer, he'll be more possessive about his courting.
I think he would give an item related to his clan. it could be a luxurious silk robe with the uchiha crest at its back. he would love to see you wear it, in his mind, it serves as a symbol of unity and pride, having his omega wear that would reinforce the seriousness of your relationship along with solidifying his potential claim on you.
in the same spirit, later into the courting, sasuke would gift you a uchiha clan heirloom. that way, he puts you under his protection and his claim on you is now strong and clear, serving as a warning to all alphas that you're his. its strengthens your bond as it's a deep acknowledgment of the importance your hold in his life.
and in fact, sasuke's gift serves as a proof of his commitment to you and your relationship and it feels reassuring to know that he considers you as a member of his clan.
ALPHA! SHIKAMARU
as expected of shikamaru, he has a pretty good understanding of omegas' nature and will therefore, make pretty good gifts. he has a pretty laidback behaviour, this is why I think he wouldn't want to make courting seems too ceremonial and will adopt a more casual approach. oh you're cold ? here's his jacket, scented. you don't even have to ask, shikamaru is just great at making things seem so normal. you mentioned you liked soft items ? here's a cute blanket he bought today, no it's not really a gift, just a thanks for spending the day with him. and it's just that. of course if you're careful you'll catch him blushing if he sees you snuggling his scarf, it's redolent with his pheromones and he's pleased to see you look so safe.
other than that, it's mainly lazy indoor dates. just you taking a few naps, progressively getting closer to each other until you eventually fall asleep on his chest.
overall, shikamaru likes to do things according to your tastes and doesn't want his courting to seem unnatural and bizarre. he tries his best to be his usual self while also trying not to get too shy, surprisingly.
ALPHA! ROCK LEE
lee is a great alpha, always cheering you on. he's very open about his love for you and he just needs you to give in. of course he knows you're more reserved and needs more time to get to know him before you can make a decision. that's why he's so patient and devoted to you during the courting process. flowers, cheesy love notes, wood sculptures with your initials... with lee it's never ending and you're always surprised with what he was able to come up with.
he will give you gifts, but he'll also often take you out on dates for fun adventures, at least that's what he calls them. genuinely thinks rock climbing & hiking are the best ideas. if he discovers you're not sporty at all, don't worry! lee is more than happy to carry you around, take your hands to help you walk through a particularly tricky path and asks you if you need a break every five minutes. he takes it as his chance to prove to you how alpha, how reliable he is. how much his unwavering determination and passion are yours only.
probably will try cooking snacks, like cookies or brownies but I don't think he's that much of a cook so it'll end up messy. you'll have to console him about this fail attempt and reassure him that you can be the one cooking for him instead!
ALPHA! NEJI
neji is a great observer, he has your tastes and hobbies all figured out and he knows how to choose the perfect gifts. he is very gentle with the omega he is trying to court and his gifts are as thoughtful as you can imagine. small accessories! after assessing what you like, he'll settle on a small hairpin with soft colours, which compliment your eyes. jewelry as well! a subtle bracelet, a ring or anything, just to remind you that he thinks about you all the time. it's a way to show people that you too are connected and that neji is already pursuing you, the others can back off.
he knows you're sensitive to smells, so probably a few candles with sweet fragrant and cute designs. perfumes? (or insence burner) as long as he likes the smell, he's buying. he loves to know you're wearing the scent he has chosen for you, it's like a pre-mark. it's not his scent yet but it's only a matter of time.
however, neiji will not force things, you'll wear his pheromones yes, but only when you feel ready and you have completely accepted him.
a delicately sewed kimono, or an item you'll be able to wear more easily, like a scarf, gloves... but! his favourite courting gift and the gift which really sealed your relationship is the cute pendant around your neck, carrying a piece of his cloth so that you always smell like him. it's subtle, but enough for the time being, he'll have plenty more time later to scent you profusely!
ALPHA! ITACHI
to. provide.
this man's main goal is to provide for you and to show you he can do it. he's reliable and he's desperate to have a chance with you. please notice him.
while getting to know him, you'll get plenty of nest items, scented of course. a lot of blankets, a few pillows and some of his clothes, he'll give it all to you. he'll even help you build your nest if you let him, he's not so sure about what he's doing but he's attentive and learns fast so you can count on him!
he'll get you food as well. you'll never be hungry with itachi. when you meet up, if he didn't already brought snacks with him, you can be sure he'll buy some later just for you. you paying isn't even a option.
just like his brother, he'll give you clothes you can wear on a daily basis with the uchiha clan crest on them. all that to assure your protection and to claim you, nobody wants to meet a jealous uchiha anyways.
he's a bit quiet at times so he'll use notes to share his feelings. it's always really touching and delicate, you know he means it.

"The characters from Naruto realizing they're in love."
Hello, this is my first headcanon! Please bear with me as I'm not very fluent in English, but I'll do my best <3
Characters: Naruto, Sasuke and Shikamaru
The first thoughts towards you were something like "She's too nice of a girl!" because you were kind and quite fun, to be honest! I spent most of my time with you. If we weren't training, we were eating ramen at Ichiraku, and if we weren't eating, we were bothering Tsunade or Sakura.
Spending time with you became a habit in our afternoons, mornings, and nights. There were times when you went on missions for almost a whole week. Strangely, I felt empty without you. After all, you were my teammate and best friend, right?
Well... not entirely. I loved you, but I just thought it was another teenage crush like the one with Sakura. But it wasn't really like that. I felt a connection for a long time. The fear of rejection was the real issue...
The day I accepted loving you was the day you almost lost your life facing some ninjas from the Sound Village. You came back badly wounded. Seeing that scene, I felt something break inside me. I didn't want to see you harmed, I wanted to protect you.
When you came out of the hospital, with your hands bandaged and a few scratches here and there, I was waiting for you at the door. Upon seeing me, you asked what I was doing there. I invited you to eat ramen, thinking it would ease any pain you were feeling at that moment. We walked slowly to Ichiraku, sat down, and ate almost until bursting. Both of us satisfied, you put money on the table, but I placed a sum higher than yours. You looked at me strangely, "I'll pay, y/n-chan..." You vehemently refused, trying to pay yourself. Ichiraku and its daughter watched amusedly, the argument was small, like when we argued as kids. After some back and forth, we split the bill evenly, and we left the food stall. I walked you home, we talked about everything, but little by little I felt our hands brushing more than usual. Suddenly, I stopped and stood in front of you, uttering the words that had been longing to come out of my mouth.

There were few things in the world that Shikamaru wanted more than to be married to you. In fact, had he had his way, you'd have been married at 16 and that would have been that.
But he was scared to move too fast. The countless talks from his father about scaring his obsession away by behaving too intensely seemed to have finally sunk in, at least on this issue, because Shikamaru was too scared that you would think he was moving too fast and reject him.
Having his proposal rejected by his obsession... Just the thought turned his stomach in the worst possible way.
Which is why he was currently 22 and still neither married nor engaged to be married.
He knew that people were confused as to why he had waited so long. He was pretty sure his father believed that he'd already proposed but been rejected, Chouji seemed to believe that Shikamaru was happy without marriage as long as he had his obsession with him, and Ino made it clear that she thought he was too much of a coward to ask.
It was extra salt in the wound that Ino was the closest to the actual truth.
In general though, Shikamaru tried to put weddings out of his mind as much as he could, pointedly ignoring the burning envy he felt when he saw strangers getting engaged and married.
Perhaps it was for that reason that he failed to figure out the obvious when you nervously asked him to accompany you on a walk into the Nara woods.

Shikamaru allowed you to lead him with your joint hands through the woods he knew like the back of his hand. It was your idea to go for a walk after all, so he was happy to let you pick a route.
Stifling a yawn, he hoped you would be ready to head back soon, because he was starting to get hungry and tired, and he had to head to work early tomorrow. He looked up at the sun filtering through the trees and tried to work out what time it was. Perhaps 19:00 ish?
You squeezed his hand, automatically refocusing his attention onto you. He tried his best to remain coherent, but the spattering of sunlight dancing across your skin was doing things to his heart and making it more difficult to think.
"Shika, you alright?" you asked, your voice not making it easier for him to focus.
"Yes, I'm fine," he said breathlessly, trying to knock himself out of his own head.
You only smiled at him, seeming amused.
"This way," you said, pulling him gently along. "I want to visit the clearing with the big silver birch."
"Okay," Shikamaru said, already forgetting any thoughts about being hungry and tired. If you wanted to see the big silver birch tree, then he would go with you. He wanted you to be happy.
Shikamaru had been to this clearing more times than he could count; it had been a favourite place of his to nap when he was a child. But as you both approached, he realised something was off. Is was... brighter than it should be?
He entered the clearly slowly, eyes peeled for any danger, but instead he found the branches of the trees that lined the edge of the clearing covered in fairy lights and pale blue lanterns. In the centre of the clearing were a couple of blankets, a bottle of champagne and two champagne flutes, and a smattering of more lanterns.
"What?" Shikamaru said, mainly to himself. Did someone set this up? What for? He tried to remember if his father or any other clan member had mentioned anything about an event or occasion that would require such a set up. He turned to you, a question on his lips, but when he turned around, his brain stalled completely.
You were on one knee, holding a little black box in both hands. You smiled and fidgeted on the spot.
Shikamaru's heart rate rocketed up so quickly he was surprised that he remained standing. There was no way... Was there?
"Shikamaru, I had a hundred things planned to say to you, but now that I'm here, I can't hold the final question back any more," you said, eyes tearing. He felt his eyes tearing up as well.
"I- I- I-"
You opened up the little box, proudly displaying the simple gold band before asking, "Will you marry me, Shikamaru?"
You were asking him to marry you. He would be your fiancé and then your husband. He would have a wedding with you. His obsession instinct had designated you as his forever for years, but this was you reciprocating that promise of forever.
His knees gave out and he fell heavily to the ground. There was one word filling every inch of his head, pressing against his lips, desperate to burst out.
"Yes," he almost sobbed, desperate to get the ring, your ring, on his finger.
This was one of the best days of his life and he was definitely calling out of work tomorrow.

Arranged Marraige Shikaku x Alpha!Reader part 3
Part One Part Two
“Shikamaru, It's time to go home,” You called as you arrived at the playground. You were calling Shikamaru home earlier than normal so he could help you prepare dinner. You were surprised to find him laying in the field curled up to another child. “Hey, Shikamaru, I need you to come home early so you can help me with dinner tonight.”
“Okay,” Four-year-old Shikamaru got up and pulled the child up with him. He gave the child a kiss on the lips, startling you. “Bye, I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Bye, Shikamaru!” the child smiled and ran off.
“Who’s your new friend? You two seem close.” You started probing Shikamaru as the two of you started walking home. It wasn't a long walk but you were a slow walker and relied heavily on your cane due to your injuries.
Shikamaru blushed. “That’s my alpha, we’re going to get married when we’re old enough.”
“Oh, that sounds serious.” you nodded, “How long has this been going on for?”
“Um… a while,” Shikamaru shrugged, “Are you going to tell my papa?”
“Is there a reason you don’t want to tell your papa?” you asked. Shikamaru just shrugged. You sighed, “You can’t be kissing other kids.”
“But they’re going to be my alpha.” Shikamaru pouted.
“We’ll talk about this with your father later, come help me wash the veggies,” you said as the two of you entered your house.
“I have to put something away,” Shikamaru said and ran off to his room. You set your bags down and followed after him to find him putting a collection of rocks into a box already full of rocks.
“What are these?” you asked.
“Hey, you aren't allowed to see these!” Shikamaru pushed you out of his room and slammed the door closed.
You let it go, for now, returning to the kitchen to get started on dinner. Shikamaru soon joined you and helped you get dinner ready.
Dinner did not go well. Shikamaru got very upset when told he was no longer allowed to kiss his alpha and he was grounded for keeping secrets. There was lots of yelling and crying before Shikamaru announced he was going to run away with his alpha and went to his room to pack.
Shikaku was aggressively washing the dinner dishes as you finished putting the dinner away.
“Is this about the alpha child that has been giving Shikamaru kisses?” You chuckled.
“No,”
“Is this about Shikamaru hiding gifts under his bed and not telling us?” you wrapped your arms around him from behind.
“No… I don't know.” Shikaku sighed and set the dishes down.
“He’s only four. It's just a baby crush. I think it's cute he’s got an admirer.” You turned him around and kissed him softly.
“I’m just worried about him getting hurt.” Shikaku sighed.
“It’s just a crush. It’s common for kids to have crushes around his age. I had one. His name was Haru, unfortunately, he was twelve years older than me. I was devastated when he turned me down.” You chuckled at the memories. “Shikamaru is just a kid and things aren’t as serious at his age. He’ll be okay, whatever happens.”
“I know, but… I don’t know…” Shikaku shrugged.
“You finally really thought about Shikamaru losing his mate like you did.” You pulled him away from the sink and sat at the table with him. “You can’t protect him from everything, especially something decades away.”
“I don’t want him to go through that…” Shikaku wiped the tears that started.
“I don’t want him to go through that either.” You pulled him into a hug and rubbed his back. “Let's go see if he's done packing.”
Shikaku gave a chuckle. “He's probably still trying to figure out how to fit all his stuffed bears into his bag.”

Oooo what if it was a fixated baby Shika being like I’m going to marry you and we’ll have a big family together and everyone thinks he’s going to be an omega cuz a six yr old already talking about kids??? Obvious.
Then they look at a foxy little naru fully dropping dead rabbits at shikas feet and they’re like ah classic alpha but NOPE
Little Shika talks about having kids cuz he knows Naruto wants a family that’s his and Naruto wants to prove he can take care of said family in whatever capacity he would need to and Kurama said getting food would help
Kurama who has no gender much less a secondary gender so there like “idk have you thought about offering rabbit?”
Shikamaru who is his normal lazy self and finds the usual alpha posturing bothersome particularly when his 237 step plan to make sure Naruto ends up as his mate is exactly on schedule. He knows Naruto will be his. He knows he will be the perfect mate for Naruto. There’s no need for him to snap and snarl all the time (he makes an exception for Sasuke. He has a second set of plans for ending the Uchiha line… just in case)
Everyone is fully convinced Naruto is going to be an alpha and Shikamaru an Omega that when Naruto comes back and is practically radiating the scent of Happy Omega more than a few people are stunned. Even more stunned than when during those two and a half years Shikamaru had presented with an alpha scent of pine and smoke rather than the more anticipated sweetness of an omega.

Omega Naruto boy scents
Naruto: his scent is fruity and tropical. He doesn’t have the best scent control so luckily, he’s in a positive mood most of the time and his scent is generally well liked. When he’s feeling unhappy the scent takes on a sour note.
Sasuke: Uchiha’s typically have woody/peppery scents. As an omega, Sasuke’s scent is cherry sweet and tart; there’s the distinctive Uchiha muskiness that levels the sweetness out. It’s not overpowering, which is especially appealing to those with sensitive noses.
Itachi: Very similar to Sasuke’s, almost indistinguishable to the untrained nose. Itachi’s scent is powderier than Sasuke’s, with the hint of something floral. The fruity note comes out more when he’s excited or happy, though he does have incredible control over his scent. Most of the time he keeps the scent minimal and manages to smell like the forest and a hint of something sweet.
Neji: smells very clean. Like fresh linen and lavender. Very powdery and feminine notes. When upset his scent can start to smell bleach-like.
Shikamaru: his scent is like a meadow. Fresh grass and flowers. Maybe it’s why the deer love Nara’s so much. His scent feels like taking a nap in a sunny field. When he’s upset however, I’d imagine it smells more like dirt and wood.
Chouji: He’d smell like cookies. Sweet, warm, and inviting. The pups in the village love his scent and tend to gravitate to him. He’s very rarely mad enough for his scent to change drastically, but in that scenario, it would smell more like burnt sugar.
Lee: Fruity and citrus like. Very fresh and pleasant to others, but not the easiest to blend into the forest. For this reason, Lee becomes very good at controlling his scent.
Haku: smells like dew drops on a flower garden in the morning. Very light and feminine scent, especially attractive to alphas. Starts to smell like an oncoming storm when he’s upset though.
Kiba: First notable scent is that he smells like pine and dirt, so he can disappear into the forest easily. However, upon close inspection there’s notes of a scent akin to butterscotch.
