Hawaii on the table
Tumblr media
Hawaii off the table
I based the tattoos on kākau which is traditional tattoo art in Polynesian culture. I got what I know from "The Hawaiian Tattoo" by PF Kwiatkowski and Kahelua Krug, a kakau uhi. I used a lot of polynesian styles from Hawaiian to Maori considering that I learn that now many get a mix or hybrid of all the different styles blended together.
She has a moari tattoo on her chin, Moko kauae
A Samoan and Tahitian style tattoos on her arms
On her chest and right leg are traditional hawaiian tattoos, fun fact traditional Hawaiian kakau begins on the leg first the right for women and left for men.
The seal is a Hawaiian monk seal which is the state animal in a japanese tattoo style because that's the most popular style in Hawaii
I also used traditional hawaiian textile, Kapa, for the top and skirt

This is a more personal version of my redesign of P4AU Mitsuru.
This was made as a gift to my best friend @umbreix who is of Māori descent and has shared her culture with me over the years. To honor this fact I often like to bring bits of her culture into my art.
This is a Mitsuru that is explicitly of Māori descent on her mother's side. I have given her a tā moko (a Māori tattoo), more specifically a moko kauae (a chin tattoo). For those unaware of the importance and meaning of a moko kauae, it is a tā moko traditionally given specifically to wāhine Māori (a Māori woman), often it is tied into the mana (prestige, status, power, authority etc) that a wāhine Māori has and how that represents her iwi (tribe), hapū (subtribe), and whānau (family).
There have been many debates about who is deserving of a moko kauae but ultimately it is the right of all wāhine Māori. It is an assertation of identity, and more specifically it a visual representation of your whakapapa (genealogy). Additionally it is a representation of your status within your community, thus why it is tied into your mana.
Mitsuru's moko kauae was made specifically as a representation of the coming together of her mother's whānau and her father's family. The widespread roots of the Kirijos, but also the growth of the smaller korus (coils, spirals, etc) upon those roots. Her heritage, is that of two very separate places coming together, while the Kirijos are not Māori, they are the legacy she carries. The best way I can describe her moko kauae is saplings on a nursery log, that is what makes up her mana, that is what makes up her leadership.
This is not perfect, and I myself am white, but this is a dedication to my best friend's culture and I feel that itself is important.

Well, I went into Thor: Love and Thunder with my bets hedged. But I loved it. It was kind, it was funny, it was visually delightful, it was anti-cynical, it was surprisingly gay, it had great music, it kept the whole theater laughing. (Significant spoilers below!)
The disappointing part: two fat jokes. One about Thor hiding his emotional vulnerability behind his dad bod, which, no. Even if the dad bod had not been hot, which it was, it deserved more respect than that stupid line. And one moment where the unspoken punchline was clearly supposed to be that the community theater actress playing Hela was fat. (I will not forgive making Melissa McCarthy the joke, ever.)
The flipside: some of the kid heroes are chubby and it's not played as funny, there’s a fat physics student talking to Jane Foster who’s treated with respect, and one (only one, boo) of the god Zeus' perfect (male and female!) consorts is mid-sized instead of waifish.
The emotional core of it: it opens with a scene of visceral despair, centered around climate change and the loss of a traditional territory's ability to sustain life, moves to fury toward the callousness and cruelty of the uncaring gods/thinly veiled colonizing elite (who could have saved them, but instead enjoy feasting while watching people die for them, and naively believe that there will always be more people to die for them), and doesn't walk back the impact of that. It shows the divine court as remote, silly, self-absorbed and lacking the spine to admit the consequences coming, and even the villain as sidetracked by despair and saveable by love, while the gods who sit back and feast on the people's pain remain unredeemed.
The only thing shown more important than that pain is the hope they needed to keep risking love and courage for the sake of their own hearts and the kids' future. And the point is not that loss isn't coming, but that even if loss and death and destruction come and the gods don't care, love was worthwhile anyway. If we're going down with our loves and our kids, we're going down fighting.
I'm not surprised it's annoyed and baffled critics. It's oddly anti-imperial for a famously imperial franchise; it's noticeably unAmerican in its sense of humor and ethical perspective and emotional rhythm. Instead of centering around the glories of isolated genius and tragic heroism, it centers around getting its heroes to betray their gods and their dignity for family, pancakes, awkward vulnerability and community hall meetings. It leaves us with domesticity instead of stealing it away. It lets its monsters bleed gold and shadows instead of bathing us in gore. It was reverent toward goodness and irreverent to glory.
The one criticism I’ve heard that I felt personally was: not enough breathing room! Things piled on top of each other in the plot. We needed more time to let the jokes and the catharses and the terrors and triumphs land.
More joys:
Korg has two dads! He successfully therapizes Valkyrie into the beginnings of grief catharsis, and Thor into vulnerability and parenthood! And he marries a nice guy named Dwayne, onscreen!
Valkyrie's voice, Valkyrie's braids, Valkyrie's bare arms, Valkyrie in a suit, Valkyrie stealing Zeus' thunderbolt and kissing the hand of one of his lady consorts with a smolder I will never forget and then blasting off into the sky on a damn rainbow. Valkyrie talking to Korg about the woman she was in love with. Valkyrie telling Thor they're both into Jane.
Jane's bare arms. I repeat, Jane's arms. The muscles. Good lord.
A Māori atua with a moko kauae facial tattoo in the court of the gods! (And while some of the gods were selfish and some were silly, none of the gods who were meant to be laughed at were the tribal ones.)
Zeus played by Russell Crowe with an absolutely atrocious vaguely Greek (???) accent and perfect ringlet curls.
Zeus' male consorts being into Thor! Thor being into Star-Lord! Korg being into Thor! Nobody being embarrassed by this!
The screaming goats. The panflaps! The jealousy between Thor's sentient weaponry! Mjölnir's makeover! The gorgeous landscapes and architecture and worlds-between-worlds. The music.
In conclusion, it was all about love and I adored it.

This is a small thing in the greater scheme but I’m watching the 6 o’clock news* on TV3 (one of the two main evening news programmes on New Zealand TV) and both the anchors are Māori (Mike McRoberts and Oriini Kaipara) and the anchorwoman has a moko kauae tattoo on her chin. I am just thinking about the change there’s been in my lifetime in terms of Māori representation in the front ranks of television, in authoritative roles. There’s a lot of progress still to be made in terms of inclusion and respect for Māori people and their culture but that’s really neat.
*which I don’t usually do, I read the news online (primarily through credible newspaper/magazine websites), hence me noticing this tonight

Hi hello I would like to hear your Māori thoughts on Lizzie and Chip and any other character you hc as Māori :3
omg hi hi hi ok so i actually. dont have as many thoughts as id like to be ause im working with approx. three days of obsessive research on tatau months ago and its currently four in the morning when im starting this but i will tell you my thoughts on that for them bc ive put a lot of thought into it :D ← also this may be true but i Am a white american midwesterner, and this goes for like Everything but if i fuck smth up lmk 🙏 this is a culture + specific cultural practice i have a lot of admiration and respect for so i hope not to say any wack shit but if i do that was not the intention!! anyway this goes off my hc that theyre twins and that theyrw both transfem as well 👍 ok this is about to be long as hell sorry
since chip and lizzie got picked up on the black rose so early as kids they wouldn't have gotten a ton of time to properly learn about their culture. unless there were other fantasy pacific islanders on the black rose they wouldn't have had much if any connection to their home. i'm pretty sure they're both canonically glad to have been picked up, but missing what they could have had if they hadn't/if their life was better before is probably somewhere in the equation.
after the hole in the sea chip of course immediately set out to find arlin, but since lizzie's backstory is so vague i can do whatever i want MWAHAHA but ok so. once she had the means to, likely on someone else's ship before she had her own ship and crew, lizzie would have decided to make her way back to. fantasy polynesia? i wish we had a map of mana HSJDHS, but she would make her way back to learn what she wasn't able to as a kid. i think this is when she would have gotten her malu + manta ray done after a few months to a year of living there and going to different islands to learn as much as possible. the malu is a samoan tattoo, not māori, and i say this because i don't know if she would have made it back exactly to where they had been picked up, but she would have had to start somewhere. she ended up in a part of the islands that did things a bit differently, where she wasn't directly from there but her determination to come back and willingness to learn was respected. later once they were both out as trans, lizzie would tell chip that 1. she ended up figuring out more specifically where they were from and 2. that she had been meaning to get her moko kauae done and would chip like to come along too?
these tattoos are based so much on community role and the community that they're both mainly in is their ships, not their home or anywhere on land, so i think they'd likely be based on their role as captains. it probably isn't an uncommon practice to at least incorporate that considering how many pirates there are in mana, but it is uncommon for kids to have been taken away so young. lizzie has somewhat more of a foot in the game from visiting sometimes but the main basis is their crews.
i can't find my notes on it but i do have my designs for lizzie's tattoos - theyre on her chest, midriff, and legs respectively

After escaping the cult, she actively seeks out a connection to her Māori heritage, and eventually has her moko kauae, along with other less traditional or culturally significant tattoos

ok so: more eopie lore incoming
- she has a batchmate who's also a medic, his name is Dess (short for Udesla) he's the cmo of the 212th
- she once got a pep talk from Mace Windu
- she got her moko kauae in a tattoo shop in little keldabe on coruscant
- she actually has a whole side quest where she becomes part of a found family of four rogue mandalorian spacers
- she's a known figure in the less sketchy criminal underworld bc of them
- she crochets baby blankets & hats that she donates to hospitals on the lowers levels using yarn from barter shops
- she got her ears pierced right after geonosis bc she was like "i wanna do something dramatic" so yeah. Dess did her piercings at like 3 in the morning & she never really changes them out bc she doesn't own many earrings & the holes will close up if she leaves them alone for more than 24 hours.
that's all for right now!! once again if any of this is offensive or incorrect please tell me!! i would love to hear feedback especially from polynesian or transfem star wars fans.
(also if anyone would like to help me design eopie's moko kauae that would be greatly appreciated & i would pay u for your time!!)

Maggie stands roughly 5′8″ (waiting for confirmation), and has an average but somewhat defined muscular build. For a woman in her 50s, she’s managed to stay in decent shape, though her diet has been particularly mediocre given the issues faced on Salvo, and now her stint in prison with the Syndicate. She has more prominent muscle in her arms than her legs, but more from work than working out specifically.
She also has a number of tattoos, most notably the Salvonian logo on her right cheek, and black bar tattoos that span across her chest to each shoulder. Despite her heritage, she does not have the moko kauae or sacred chin tattoo like other Māori women. While she is from the in-game planet of Salvo, it is clear they still have a number of specific Earth ethnicities among the Legends, and it seems clear that those from both New Zealand and Australia (as Maggie and Fuse are from both respectively) settled on Salvo in the Outlands.
Additionally, Maggie has her lobes pierced multiple times and wears a number of earrings. Given her inclination to body modification, I also believe she has her nipples pierced, and could possibly, if she felt inclined, get her septum pierced in the future, along with more tattoos.

i have a question about ta moko i couldn’t get a straight answer on google- is the placement the problem as much as the design is? would it be offensive to have ANY sort of tattoo on the chin in character design, even if it was clearly not emulating ta moko? sorry to bother
hey, it’s not offensive to have just any tattoo on the chin. the placement and the design are both important, the head is considered sacred which is why a lot of moko is traditionally on the head and different areas on the head will mean different things. there will be different meaning for different tribes, families, everything. moko kauae is specifically on the chin and every single moko is unique. having just like, some random tattoo on the chin isn’t an issue but there’s a very obvious style that mokos have and that’s where it becomes an issue
basically normal tattoos are fine even on the chin, don’t worry about it. i don’t think we have the power to tell people not to get any chin tattoos lol
i will say though the reason you won’t find a clear answer on google is this is like. a sacred indigenous art form that has been appropriated to hell and back. a lot of the pages are written by white people lol. i think that the best thing you can do is specifically search for articles/blog posts/videos made by maori people

“Oriini Kaipara made history when she read v 1's midday news bulletin today.
Kaipara has a moko kauae, a traditional lower chin tattoo worn by Māori women, and is the first to appear on a mainstream news bulletin to bear one.
According to TVNZ, this represented the fulfillment of a lifelong dream for Kaipara.
Two years ago, she made headlines when DNA testing revealed that she was "100 per cent Māori." Kaipara is of Tūhoe, Ngāti Awa, Tūwharetoa and Te Arawa descent.”

^this is lazy reporting.
NZ gets first female foreign minister, NZ gets Māori foreign minister, NZ foreign minister a wāhine tangata whenua.
If you want to know how local news is reporting it check out how oh boy we’re talking about her and her achievements in her community!!
Nanaia Mahuta has a moko kauae which is very important to her identity as a Māori woman, it connects her to her whakapapa and her iwi and her whānau. It isn’t just a tattoo it’s tā moko. In te reo māori, non traditional tattoo (ie not tā moko) is called kiri tuhi. It’s a separate thing a tattoo is done with a needle gun, tā moko is traditionally applied like Samoan tatau with chisels (though not necessarily any more due to hygiene reasons) and wāhine Māori almost have to earn tā moko. Many wāhine Māori feel you need to speak te reo, or be an elder in your community, you have to have contributed to your community. There’s a new school of thought that by being a wāhine Māori and to be decended from a line of wāhine who survived everything the pākehā have done thus far is enough in and of itself. Either way, you need to be Māori and have mana before getting one.
And what would it matter if she did just have tattoos? She’d still be able to do the job.
ALSO MĀORI HAS A MACRON OVER THE Ā. DO YOUR DAMN RESEARCH BEFORE YOU’RE OFFENSIVE INTERNATIONALLY
The Deputy PM Grant Robertson is the first openly gay Deputy Prime Minister, but not the first openly gay MP. And surely that’s not the most notable thing about him? It’s 2020 and you’re still leading with THAT PERSON IS GAY! It’s not interesting, it’s not important to whether he can do the job. It’s like shouting that the prime minister is a woman!!!
