THE BOB HOPE SHOW

May 3, 1949

“The Bob Hope Show” ~ After a dozen years as “The Pepsodent Show”, Pepsodent pulled its sponsorship in June 1948. Despite cancellation, Hope still continued on radio. Lever Brothers' Swan soap began sponsoring the show, which premiered on September 14, 1948 on NBC. Doris Day was the only one of Hope's former co-stars to continued to perform on the new show. Airing Tuesdays at 9, the program was at direct competition with the new sitcom “Life with Luigi”, which aired at the same time on CBS. “Life with Luigi” proved to be the season's new hit, crushing “The Bob Hope Show” in the ratings. Like Pepsodent before, due to the poor ratings, Swan pulled its sponsorship in 1950. The last Swan-sponsored episode of the program aired on June 13. On October 3, 1950 “The Bob Hope Show” premiered under the sponsorship of Chesterfield cigarettes. Over the next five years, it aired under various sponsors, including Jell-O and General Foods, in various timeslots until its final episode aired on April 21, 1955.

CAST

Bob Hope made his radio debut on NBC in May 1937. He became a top-rated fixture on Tuesday nights with his theme song, "Thanks for the Memories". His legendary broadcasts from military bases around the world helped boost American morale during the dark days of World War II. Over the years, his radio regulars included Jerry Colonna, Brenda and Cobina, Vera Vague, Wendall Niles, and orchestras led by Skinnay Ennis and Les Brown. Featured singers on the show included Judy Garland, Frances Langford, Doris Day, and Gloria Jean. Hope's radio career lasted well into the mid-1950s. By then, he had become a major movie and television star doing four films, and numerous television programs with Lucille Ball. He died on July 29, 2003, at the age of 100.

Lucille Ball was then a film star with her own weekly radio show, “My Favorite Husband”, which had just aired “Vacation Time” on April 29, 1949. Her new film with Bob Hope, Sorrowful Jones, would premiere in June 1949. In February 1949 she had made her first national TV appearance on “Perry Como’s Kraft Music Hall”, quickly followed by an episode of “The Milton Berle Show.”

Doris Day began her career as a big band singer in 1939, achieving commercial success in 1945 with two No. 1 recordings, "Sentimental Journey" and "My Dreams Are Getting Better All the Time" with Les Brown & His Band of Renown. She left Brown to embark on a solo career and recorded more than 650 songs from 1947 to 1967. Day was one of the biggest film stars in the 1950s and '60s. Surprisingly, Lucille Ball never acted opposite Doris Day in films or television, but she did interview her for her CBS radio show “Let’s Talk To Lucy” #144 on March 22, 1965. She died in 2019 at age 97.

Irene Ryan is the least remembered of Bob Hope’s female stooges. Her mousy Miss Ryan character told Hope week after week that she was, “Feeling about as well as could be expected,” before launching into a string of hypochondriac jokes. Irene Noblette and husband Tim Ryan went into radio in 1933 after a vaudeville and minor movie career. They kept busy in radio for ten years, four of them as stars of their own shows, including 1937's Royal Crown Revue. After their divorce in 1943, Irene kept the Ryan name and worked in some 20 low budget movie comedies and shorts plus occasional radio roles. While with Hope’s troupe she continued her screen work and drifted into occasional television roles in the 1950's. In 1962, at age 60 and ready to retire as a relative unknown, Irene Ryan was cast as “Granny” Daisy Mae Moses in a new television sitcom, “The Beverly Hillbillies”. The show was an immediate hit that endured for nine seasons on CBS-TV. In 1972, when she was 70, she co-starred on Broadway in the musical hit Pippin. She collapsed on stage a year later and died of a stroke, leaving a million dollars to the Irene Ryan Foundation which provides scholarships to collegiate acting students.

Bill Farrell was first spotted by Bob Hope in a night club in Buffalo, New York in 1947. Hope was impressed with Farrell's powerful baritone voice and smooth delivery and he invited Farrell to Hollywood. Hope featured him on his weekly radio show. In 1949 Farrell enjoyed a minor hit with his recording of "Circus" which reached #26 in the Billboard charts.

The Four Hits and A Miss consisted of four male singers and one female (thus the word "miss" in their name has a double meaning). They were variously known as Three Hits and A Miss, and even Six Hits and a Miss, as members came and went, mainly due to wartime service. They performed musical numbers in several Hollywood films of the 1940s.

The New Les Brown Band performed with Bob Hope on radio, stage and television for almost fifty years. They did 18 USO Tours, and entertained over three million people. The first film that Brown and the band appeared in was Seven Days' Leave (1942) starring Victor Mature and Lucille Ball.

Hy Averback (Announcer) played Charlie Appleby on “I Love Lucy” in “Baby Pictures” (ILL S3;E5), although the character would be re-cast with George O'Hanlon in season six. He played another Charlie, Charlie Pomerantz, in “The Hedda Hopper Story” (ILL S4;E21) on March 14, 1955. Averback transitioned from acting to directing, becoming Emmy nominated for “M*A*S*H.”

Miss Ryan interrupts their chat. She was also at the party, briefly. She had to leave early due to her bad back. She talks about the fundraising efforts of her club and why she has remained single for so long.

Averback and Hope make another pitch for the “Swan CARE Campaign”.

Bill Farrell sings “Careless Hands”.

Hope introduces “his favorite redhead” - Lucille Ball - and they discuss their new movie, Sorrowful Jones. He admires her hair.

BOB: “If you get together with ‘The Boy with Green Hair’ you’d make a terrific traffic signal!”

He thanks her for not making a crack about his nose. She says she appreciated it.

LUCY: “It was such an easy place to hang my coat every morning.”

Lucy says she loved working at Paramount and hopes that they make another picture together soon. He asks her about “My Favorite Husband” on ‘that other network’. She says that her show has great ratings. She tells him the premise of the show.

He compares her domestic situation on radio with the couples he he has seen in films, like Kentucky (1938), a Romeo and Juliet story set amidst horse racing in Kentucky. They launch into a sketch playing Ma and Pa.

PA: “A-Okay, Ma. Get the children in the house and we’ll eat.” MA: “Alright, I’ll get Elam, Rufus, Walter, Albert, Effie Mae, Janie, Betty Lou, Charles, Si, Jack, Fred, George, Ellie, Billy, Clarence, Hiram, Helen, and Jean.” PA: “And I’ll get John, Harvey, Cletus, Zeke, Daniel Boone, Judy, Joan, Nancy, Carolyn, Birdie, Eleanor, Little Daisy, Sam, Kate, Tom, Abner, and Teddy.” MA: “Well, that takes care of the twins. Who’ll get the single ones?”

Hope says another interesting husband and wife is a Brooklyn cab driver and his wife. The band plays “The Sidewalks of New York”. Hope and Ball do Brooklyn accents for their characters.

In closing, as usual, Hope sings “Thank for the Memory” with special lyrics about the episode, including the Swan Soap CARE Campaign.

Marvel Descendants OCs

Acknowledgment: When Marvel Descendants was first written in 2015, one year after I joined Tumblr, at the time I wasn’t aware of how bad certain things were and while I am aware this is a bad excuse for what I’m about to acknowledge, it’s all I have really for what I wrote into Marvel Descendants at 14-15 as back then, I was into DC’s Kingdom Come and when I saw them ship Nightstar and Ibn al Xu'ffasch (pre-Damien Wayne), I didn’t see anything wrong with it and as a result, used the adopted family excuse for shipping Locket Lokidottir and Theo Thorson. Now that I am older and know more over the years, I wish I had known back then, but I wasn’t deep into Tumblr until December 2014 and even then, it took me until a while back to realize Marvel Descendants was wrong for that, but by that point, book 5 confirming the ship two married in the future, was out and while its too late to fix canon, I try to fix it in AUs and ship the two with other characters. Any other issues within Marvel Descendants, I am trying to fix and hope to avoid in the future as I continue writing.

Description of Marvel Descendants: Marvel Descendants is a marvel version of Disney Descendants that follows The Isle of the Lost, Descendants 1 and Wicked Wold in first two books and mini-spin off and goes on its own plot in book 3, with it now being tied @disneyfan50 ‘s series, Descendant of Loki, starting from the team up/crossover, Daughters of The Trickster, with the series continuing on right now with planned future installments and AUs.

Timeline so far:

Book 1: The Area of The Lost. Summary: Twenty years ago, all villains from Loki to Doctor doom were sent to the lost part of asgard with a shield around it to keep them there and them from ever escaping. The villains and their children now live in total isolation, forgotten by the world. But now there is a price for grabs, Loki's sceptre, could be their chance of escape, but they have to prove their more then willing to do anything evil to get hold of it. The 2010′s decade is about 6 months till its end, mind-boggling enough, this blog has existed for 9 years of it starting mid-2011. Thank you to everyone who’s ever taken any sort of time out of their life to read, think about, or even just glance at one of my reviews over the years it’s meant a lot. There are many side characters, so if you would like to specifically audition for one of those please email us and we will send you the audition material. The side characters will be listed right at the end of this post. We are looking for people with American accents, as the story is set in Maine, and good mic quality. You are more than welcome to audition for multiple roles! Due to this podcast being very low budget we may be unable to pay successful applicants.

Vincent ‘Vince’ Hughes

Vince appears to be a fun and witty person. The radio show he hosts alongside his long-time best friend, Rae, acts as his only escape from the stress of his mother’s illnesses. She suffers from severe depression and paranoia, causing Vince to constantly worry about her. This worry grows as more and more of his classmates are murdered live on the air. As a closeted gay young adult, he also struggles with his feelings for his best friends, twin brother Serge.

Rae, as she prefers, is the older twin of Sergio Farrington and life-long best friend of Vincent Hughes. She is confident, fun, and very protective when it comes to her friends. Despite being in an abusive relationship, she always tries to act strong for the ones she cares about. Her family have a very powerful role in the town she lives in and Rae grew up in the shadow of her successful brothers. Her parents are very strict and expect certain things of her, so Rae uses the radio show as an escape.

Alongside his high position within the town, he is also extremely popular at school as he is the Linebacker for the Enterprise Falcon Football Team.

Michael Crowes is the single father of Rochelle Crowes, and is Rushford Creek’s town Sheriff. He’s been in the same job ever since he was appointed in 1963 and has a very pristine reputation within the town. Due to the fact that he holds his position within the town in high regard, he covers up many details of cases and hides complete cases from the public to keep up a ‘perfect small town’ facade.

Old Dogs is a 2009 American ensemble comedy film directed by Wild Hogs's Walt Becker and starring John Travolta and Robin Williams with an ensemble supporting cast played by Kelly Preston, Matt Dillon, Justin Long, Seth Green, Rita Wilson, Dax Shepard, Lori Loughlin, and Bernie Mac. It was released in theaters on November 25, 2009 and was released on DVD March 9, 2010.

The movie is dedicated to both Bernie Mac (who died in August 2008 and had his final acting role in the film) and Jett Travolta (John Travolta's son who died in January 2009). The film grossed $96.7 million worldwide on a $35 million budget.[1]

Canadian rocker Bryan Adams wrote the theme song for the film, "You've Been a Friend to Me".

At the 30th Golden Raspberry Awards ceremony, Old Dogs was nominated in four categories: Worst Picture, Worst Actor for John Travolta, Worst Supporting Actress for Kelly Preston and Worst Director for Walt Becker.

Plot

Dan Rayburn (Robin Williams) and Charlie Reed (John Travolta) are best friends and co-owners of a successful sports marketing firm. Seven years prior, Dan, recently divorced, married Vicki (Kelly Preston) after being whisked away by Charlie for a tropical vacation. The marriage, however, is short lived. Seven years later, Vicki resurfaces to tell Dan that their short marriage resulted in something he never suspected: twins Zach (Conner Rayburn) and Emily (Ella Bleu Travolta).

Vicki, facing jail time for her work as an environmental activist, asks Dan to take care of the kids while she does her time. Thinking this might be his chance to get back with Vicki, Dan agrees, but only if Charlie will help him since neither have any experience taking care of kids. At the same time, the two must finalize a huge marketing deal with a Japanese company; something they've always dreamed of, but will take all of their talents to clinch.

Because Dan's condo does not allow children, he has to board with Charlie. Whilst this is happening, Charlie and Dan are close to securing the biggest account in the history of their careers with the Japanese corporation. Charlie and Dan's attempts to take care of the kids are well-intentioned, but very misguided. On a trip with the kids to an overnight camp, a hard-nosed camp instructor (Matt Dillon) becomes convinced that Dan and Charlie are homosexual partners. The trip ends with a bang after Dan accidentally sets a beloved statue of the camp's founder on fire.

The kids then proceed to spill and replace Charlie and Dan's prescriptions, mixing them up in the process. Dan then must play a game of golf with the Japanese executives while experiencing extreme side effects and Charlie tries to woo Amanda (Lori Loughlin) with a face frozen by the pills.

Desperate to help Dan communicate with the children despite his inexperience with children, Charlie recruits his friend Jimmy Lunchbox (Bernie Mac), a flamboyant children's entertainer, who is famous around the world. Jimmy comes by and straps Dan and Charlie in motion control puppet suits so Charlie can help Dan make all the right moves with his daughter while having a tea party. The suits malfunction, but Dan speaks from the heart, winning over Emily but his speech makes Jimmy emotional. Everything is great with Vicki as she returns home upon having served time in jail. However, the guys have sealed their Japanese deal, sending junior associate Craig (Seth Green) to Tokyo. When Craig goes missing after arriving there, Charlie and Dan must fly to Tokyo themselves to work. Dan must leave the kids and Vicki despite his (and their) desire to be a family.

Once in Tokyo, Dan realizes that what he really wants is to be a good father. He leaves the meeting without sealing the deal, rushing with Charlie to Vermont for the kids' birthday party. They aren't able to get into the Burlington Zoo in time and are forced to break in with the help of Craig. However, they mistakenly wind up in the gorilla enclosure. Though Dan and Charlie escape, Craig is captured by the gorilla (which takes a strong liking to him).

Dan then pays a birthday party performer hired by Vicki to use his jet pack and suit, flies into the ceremony and wins his kids back over. When the jet pack stops working in mid-air, he is taken to an ambulance on a stretcher. One year later, Dan and Vicki are together, Charlie has married Amanda, and Craig has become like a new "uncle" to the kids.

Critical response

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a rating of 5%, based on 108 reviews, with an average rating of 2.3/10. The site's consensus reads, "Its cast tries hard, but Old Dogs is a predictable, nearly witless attempt at physical comedy and moral uplift that misses the mark on both counts."[2] The film was ranked number three on their list of the ten most moldy films of 2009.[3] At Metacritic, Old Dogs received an aggregated rating of 19 out of 100, based on 22 reviews, indicating "overwhelming dislike."[4]

Film critic Roger Ebert gave Old Dogs a rating of one star out of a possible four.[5] Ebert opened his review commenting, "'Old Dogs' is stupefying dimwitted. What were John Travolta and Robin Williams thinking of? Apparently their agents weren't perceptive enough to smell the screenplay in its advanced state of decomposition".[5]

The Salt Lake Tribune gave Old Dogs a rating of zero stars out of a possible four, and criticized the film for "hammy acting and sledgehammer editing".[6] Film critic Roger Moore of The Orlando Sentinel gave Old Dogs a rating of one and a half stars out of a possible four.[7] "Trashing Old Dogs is a bit like kicking a puppy. But here goes. The new comedy from some of the folks who brought us Wild Hogs is badly written and broadly acted, shamelessly manipulative and not above stopping by the toilet for a laugh or two," wrote Moore.[7]

Bill Goodykoontz of The Star Press gave the film a critical review, and commented, "Old Dogs, which stars Robin Williams and John Travolta as a couple of aging bachelors who suddenly have twins thrust upon them, delivers everything you’d expect. Which is: not much."[8] He concluded his review with, "Let’s hope Williams, Travolta and the rest got a fabulous payday for Old Dogs. Because otherwise, you know, woof."[8] In a review for The Arizona Republic, Goodykoontz gave the film a rating of one and a half stars out of a possible five.[9]

Writing for the San Jose Mercury News in an analysis of movies that were released around Thanksgiving, Randy Myers placed Old Dogs below "The Scraps: Leftovers that should be immediately placed in Fido's bowl."[10] Myers commented, "We have a winner in the Thanksgiving movie turkey contest."[10] Dennis Harvey of Variety wrote, "Too bad this shrilly tuned comedy doesn't demand more than clock-punching effort from everyone involved."[11] Tim Robey of The Telegraph savaged the film, saying, "Old Dogs is so singularly dreadful it halts time, folds space and plays havoc with the very notion of the self."[12] He added to the review, "Being a film critic is a wonderful job, but there are weeks when the bad film delirium strikes and we’d all be better off in straitjackets. A colleague opined to me the other day that this might be the deadliest run of releases in his 20-year history on the job, and I can completely see that." He also said, "You'd have to hate your family to take them to this!" He gave the film zero stars.

Writing for The Philadelphia Inquirer, Carrie Rickey gave the film a rating of two and a half stars out of four.[13] Rickey commented of the multiple cameos in the film, "A child of 5 can see that these brief appearances serve to pad a gauze-thin script."[13] The review concluded, "Old Dogs may not be good. But the sight of pesky penguins pecking Travolta and Green in the embrace of an unlikely partner makes it just good enough."[13] Pete Hammond of Boxoffice gave the film 3/5 stars, and concluded, "Old Dogs may not reach the box office heights of Wild Hogs but its fun family friendly attitude should guarantee a healthy holiday haul."[14]

Box office

In its first day, Old Dogs opened in fifth place, with a take of $3.1 million.[15][16] It was beat out in first-day box office results by New Moon, The Blind Side, 2012, and Ninja Assassin.[15][16] The film came in fourth in its second day with $4.1 million, for a two-day pickup of $7.2 million.[17] The film remained in fourth place for its third day, with a box office take of $6.8 million.[18] Overall, the film grossed $96,753,696 worldwide on a budget of $35,000,000.[19]

The movie was also a moderate success on DVD, gaining more than $20,000,000 (20 million dollars) domestically during its first two months of release.[20]

At 113, Joan Crawford's Mommie Dearest Gets a Reprieve

On this day in 1904, Lucille Fay LeSueur (later known as Joan Crawford) was born in San Antonio, Texas. Some sources list the year of her birth as 1904, 1905, or even 1908, but a quick search of the San Antonio census records reveals the truth. By any measure, Crawford was one of the greats in the history of Hollywood.

I recently watched the 1981 film Mommie Dearest for the first time in decades. While Faye Dunaway’s depiction of Crawford over the course of almost 40 years is dead on, it sometimes seems as if she’s using Carol Burnett’s parodies of Joan Crawford as her source material rather than the actress herself. The way Dunaway transforms herself through makeup, hair, costumes and her exquisite acting chops is one degree short of channeling, but her performance is so over-the-top that you have to wonder what the filmmakers were going for. What could have been a truly incisive look at the stresses and psychological issues of a well known figure is instead an exercise in High Camp even though I don’t think that was anyone’s intention at the time, least of all Faye Dunaway’s (who refuses to discuss this film today). I’m not sure director Frank Perry was the right man for the job, and yet he did direct two films that I thought were outstanding depictions of mental disorders: David and Lisa in 1962 and the classic Diary of a Mad Housewife in 1970.

I have long wished for a new look at Joan Crawford on the screen, one that would treat her life and issues more seriously, not as a big punchline. But I never dreamed it would actually happen — I was sure that Faye Dunaway’s larger-than-life depiction was the last time we’d ever see a talented actress donning Crawford’s red lipstick and shoulder pads. I was wrong!

Ryan Murphy’s eight-part series Feud, currently running on FX, details the production of the 1962 Robert Aldrich film, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? Though we’ve only seen half of the episodes, I have to say that I am deeply moved by the performances of Jessica Lange as Joan Crawford and Susan Sarandon as Bette Davis.

Not everyone in my circle of classic movie-loving friends agrees, but I find Lange and Sarandon’s depictions deeply moving and nuanced. Yes, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? has itself become a camp classic on par with Mommie Dearest, and this series focuses on the bitter rivalry between the two stars as they grappled with the agonies of being middle-aged in Hollywood (Davis was 54 and Crawford 58 during the making of that film, not old by today’s standards but in Hollywood they were considered ancient relics), but Feud also looks beyond the Hedda Hopper-ish “dirt” to the living and breathing women behind the icons, with all their wisdom, experience, insecurities, and vulnerabilities on full display. I think Sarandon and Lange, themselves 70 and 67, are remarkable in the roles.

Feud also looks at aspects of the questionable parenting of both women, but presents it in a much more compassionate way despite many cringe-producing moments. Davis’s daughter, B.D. Hyman, who would eventually write her own tell-all about her mother, actually had a small role in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? although it was clear from the start that she did not inherit her mother’s acting ability. Played by the talented Kiernan Shipka (Sally Draper from Mad Men), we see Davis and B.D. struggling through difficult moments in their relationship as mother and daughter as well as fellow actors. In 1962, Crawford’s two older children were out of the picture but we see Crawford interacting with her teenaged twin daughters who would later refute the charges levied by their older sister.

When Christina Crawford’s tell-all book came out a year after her mother’s 1977 death, Old Hollywood divided into two camps: those who thought the book represented the slanderous ravings of a spoiled brat bent on revenge for being written out of her mother’s will; and those who said they had witnessed Crawford’s unstable behavior with her children and were convinced that the book’s shocking claims were true. At the top of the list of Joan’s defenders was her old friend Myrna Loy who had known Crawford since she first arrived in Hollywood in the 1920s and had appeared with daughter Christina in a stage production of Barefoot in the Park. Loy disliked Christina and said that she had behaved horribly during the run of their play. She said that while she never saw Joan hit her daughter, if anyone needed a good slap it was Christina. Yikes.

Helen Hayes, however, another great actress whom Joan had befriended in the 1930s, did not exactly elect Joan Mother of the Year in her autobiography:

Joan was not quite rational in her raising of children. You might say she was strict or stern. But cruel is probably the right word.

When my young son Jim came to stay with me, we would go out to lunch with Joan and her son Christopher. Joan would snap, “Christopher!” whenever he tried to speak. He would bow his little head, completely cowed, and then he’d say, “Mommie dearest, may I speak?” Joan’s children had to say [that] before she allowed them to utter another word. It would have been futile for me or anyone else to protest. Joan would only get angry and probably vent her rage on the kids.

I have read that people who are abused as children often become abusive parents. Maybe it was Joan’s tough childhood that made her exert her power like that over her own children. But understanding the reason did not make their suffering any easier to watch.

Pretty damning stuff, and yet were many who claimed that Christina Crawford exaggerated some of the childhood episodes for dramatic purposes. I admit that certain scenes from the film that so appalled me when I first saw it in the 1980s don’t seem that bad today. At Christmas time and on birthdays, Joan’s fans would send Christina mountains of presents. Crawford would let her keep one or two and have her give the rest to needy children. This is presented in the film as monstrous abuse but I have to say that it seems pretty reasonable to me today. Still, it’s clear that there were times when Crawford’s highly disciplined and controlling nature devolved into episodes of severe mental and physical abuse. The last thing I would ever do is accuse Christina Crawford of lying about her own childhood. I would think that the only thing worse than experiencing such abuse is telling people about it and not being believed. Only she knows what happened between her and her mother and it certainly seems like Joan had plenty of issues that made her a challenge to live with. On the other hand, I wish the makers of Mommie Dearest had avoided the temptation to create completely fictional scenes of terror like the one in which Joan almost kills Christina in front of a magazine reporter.

As far as Joan’s friends defending her, it’s true that you never really know what goes on behind other people’s closed doors. Still, Christina Crawford hasn’t helped her “case,” in my opinion, by encouraging the camp-fest that has developed around the book and movie of Mommie Dearest. She has appeared at screenings with drag queens playing her mother and at which the crowd interacts with the film à la Rocky Horror using props. The last time I saw the film in a theater, an AFI-sponsored screening for its 25th anniversary in 2006, I was uncomfortable at the uproarious laughter that greeted so many scenes. If the story is true, we are laughing at horrific child abuse. If it is an exaggerated tale of a troubled childhood, we are participating in a major defamation of character of a woman who is not here to defend herself and whose public image (the one thing everyone who knew Joan Crawford said she cared about more than anything) has been utterly trashed.

Not that I can truly blame the audience for laughing or claim that I took the high road and didn’t join in from time to time. How can you not laugh at lines that are so out there they have become indelible parts of our pop culture such as “Christina, bring me the ax!” or the iconic “NO WIRE HANGERS…EVER!!” My personal favorite is a scene that I think shows Joan in a positive light even though she’s clearly being a Class A bitch. After her fourth husband, Pepsi-Cola honcho Al Steele dies, the top brass at Pepsi try to kiss her off. Never one to meekly slither away, Joan Crawford lays into the Board and threatens to use her fame to turn her fans against Pepsi if they continue their campaign to get rid of her. After years of dealing with the sleazeballs of Hollywood, Joan was not about to let this group give her the heave-ho. “Don’t fuck with me, fellas!” she spews with an evil smile on her face. “This ain’t my first time at the rodeo.” I hope she really said that, it’s such a great line.

While the Crawford twins, Cathy and Cynthia, that we see in Feud always defended their mother against their sister’s charges, Joan’s adopted son, Christopher, definitely did not. Though he was never as interested in sharing his story with the world as Christina had done, his own childhood was every bit as troubled. As a young boy, Christopher ran away from home several times. At 12, Joan placed him is a residential military academy but it didn’t curtail the trouble the boy constantly got into. Following Crawford’s death and the release of his sister’s book, he finally agreed to talk to a newspaper reporter in 1978 about his unhappy childhood.

“I want to tell this once, so people will get off my back and leave my family alone,” says the 6-foot-4 man whose hard life shows in his face. He needs dental work. There are small scars on his face and larger ones on his back from a mortar explosion in Vietnam.

Crawford recalled his mother’s “sleep safe,” the harnesslike device used to keep infants securely in their beds. Chris was strapped into bed until the age of 12. Once caught playing with matches, his mother made him hold his hand in the fireplace. “I had blisters all over my hand. That day I ran away for the first time. I was 7.”

Though Chris attended his mother’s funeral, his last encounter with J.C. was five years ago. His youngest child was born in Brooklyn, on welfare. “When Bonnie was born, she had a lot of trouble. She was just a tiny little mass of bones with some skin stretched over them. So I called J.C. and said, ‘I need your help. Your granddaughter needs blood and she needs it now. She might die.’ J.C. said, ‘She’s not my granddaughter. You were adopted.’ I lost my temper and slammed down the phone so hard I broke the receiver. That was it between J.C. and me.”

That’s as bad as anything in Mommie Dearest. Christopher Crawford died of cancer on September 22, 2006. Cynthia Crawford died the following year. It’s quite possible that Christina and Christopher’s perspectives about their mother were as true and valid as their younger sisters’ claims of a strict but very loving mother. In any event, I’m grateful to Ryan Murphy and Jessica Lange for allowing the world to see a more multifaceted and complex version of Joan Crawford, albeit another fictionalized take that is open to different interpretations. Few people cared more about their career or their public image than Joan Crawford and I’m happy that this poignant examination of the screen legend doesn’t treat her incredible and often tragic life as one big joke. Happy Birthday, Joan!

Has only been dancing with Ryan and the others for 2 yrs now when they were promoted to the troupe.

I based Lorrel’s personality off of Vee from The Owl House. She is very friendly and sweet but they can get anxious around new people or in high intensity environments, making Klaus’s class a bad idea for them.

She’s the baby of the group and is very much treated that way as all the others are very overprotective of them.

This is how I imagine their group dynamic and I love it so let me know what you think!

How Camp Was Last Night’s Met Gala?

Last night’s Met Gala kicked off with Lady Gaga arriving in shocking Schiaparelli-pink cape by Brandon Maxwell, which she removed to reveal a black gown, then another pink one, before finally stripping down to her underwear and crumpling onto the pink carpet like a defeated Judy Garland. But besides this flamboyant display, how camp was the Met Gala, exactly?

On a scale of American Gothic (not camp) to Pink Flamingos (extremely camp) we’d wager it ranked about a Dusty Springfield, that is, it achieved a medium-high level of camp. (While it may seem a tad out of character for the fashion world to embrace a sensibility that is defined by bad taste, embrace it they did.

We ranked some notable Met Gala attendees on how they measure up to our own (very stringent!) camp criteria.

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga is an incredibly talented performer, sure, but I kind of feel like she has me by a chokehold here, daring me to declare her anything other than camp after four outfit changes. We get it Gaga! You’re camp! Trying very hard is camp but there’s a sort of earnestness to Gaga’s desire to adhere to the theme that isn’t quite camp. Still, I’ll give it to her. Did you hear that? You can loosen your grip on my neck now, I think I’m starting to get rope burn.

Camp-o-meter: 8/10, definitely camp.

Billy Porter

This man understands camp on a deep, deep level. Porter arrived at the Met Gala dripping in custom gold Cleopatra-inspired look by The Blonds carried by six shirtless attendants. Subsequently, the attendants lowered him off the dais and Porter unfurled his cape to reveal a wingspan of Albatross-like proportions. To understand the true meaning of camp, we need look no further than this man.

Camp-o-meter: 9/10, severely camp.

Serena Williams

Williams’ floral, sprouting dress by Versace initially strikes me as a bit too ‘nature-y’ to be camp, but the Off-White Nike sneakers put the outfit over the edge. In her essay on camp in the May issue of FASHION, Tatum Dooley writes “Virgil Abloh’s penchant for quotation marks could be seen as the ultimate example of contemporary camp.” Go off, Serena.

Camp-o-meter: 7/10, totally camp.

Laverne Cox

Don’t ask me why, but ruffles are camp. (Okay fine, ask me, I’ve already written a whole story about it.) Ruffles were one of the major themes of the evening, worn in heaping amounts by Doutzen Kroes, Lily Collins et al., but Laverne wore them best. Full camp marks awarded here.

Camp-o-meter: 8/10, totally camp.

Natasha Lyonne

The aeronautic shoulders of Lyonne’s jumpsuit are a clear reference to queer icon Klaus Nomi, which affords her some serious camp points. (Plus, she acted on Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, one of the most camp tv shows of all time.) This look is bold, strange, and very gay. Do you hear that? It’s the camp alarm sounding off.

Camp-o-meter: 7/10, undoubtedly camp.

Cardi B

One of my many hopes for the Met Gala was that somebody would arrive wearing a train of Princess Diana proportions, and Cardi B did not disappoint. Though honorable mentions go out to Gwen Stefani, Rachel Brosnahan and Sophie Hunter for attempting the train, it was Cardi’s Bi’s distended Thom Browne dress that truly achieved the excessive exaggeration native to camp. Cardi looked a little bit like vampire Aaliyah in Queen of the Damned mixed with Pope Benedict XVI. Her train required three separate fluffers. If that’s not camp then I do not know what is.

Camp-o-meter: 9.5/10, unbearably camp.

Miley Cyrus

Brutally un-camp. Cyrus’s status as a former Disney star should help her coast by on merit alone, but this Saint Laurent look is simply not camp. It would be perfect if she were, say, attending a Studio 54-themed party, but this is the Met Gala! Just because something has sequins doesn’t make it camp. Plus, major points docked off for having bangs.

Camp-o-meter: 2.5/10, unfortunately un-camp.

Celine Dion

So, so, so, so camp. It perhaps cannot be overstated how camp Celine Dion as an entity — and by extension, her Met Gala outfit — is. Dion’s appeal as a performer is based on her painfully earnest delivery of ballads like “My Heart Will Go On” combined with flamboyant showmanship and a penchant for pizzazz. In this silver Oscar de la Renta jumpsuit bedecked with fringe and a feathered headdress, Celine gets extra camp points. According to Dion, the outfit was partially inspired by “the glitzy costumes of the Ziegfield follies.”

Camp-o-meter: 9/10, indubitably camp.

Hailey Bieber

A term that often gets thrown around when trying to define camp is ‘trashy.’ Bieber’s faux-thong backless gown by Alexander Wang was definitely that. The tawdry detail reminds of being an awkward middle schooler in the early 2000s when it was cool to wear low-rise jeans with a hiked-up thong. Intentionally exposing a whale-tail? Definitely camp.

Camp-o-meter: 7.5, unexpectedly camp.

Lena Dunham

Bizarre, yes, but definitely camp. Dunham’s Christopher Kane dress from his F/W 2019 collection inspired by sexual fetishes completely, unexpectedly nails the theme. Camp is all about reveling in one’s own freaky filth and what better way to articulate this than by caping for a semi-obscure sexual fetish? Good job, Dunham. This look is totally weird, very extra and undeniably camp.

Camp-o-meter: 7.5/10, distinctly camp.

Karlie Kloss

Kloss waltzed onto the red carpet looking the golden ticket from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in a Dapper Dan x Gucci dress — and not in a good way. This outfit reads as if she did the cursory reading on camp, then decided to ignore everything in favour of looking normatively hot. This outfit is distinctly not camp.

Camp-o-meter: 5/10, regrettably un-camp.

Ryan Murphy

Wearing a shimmery salmon suit by Christian Siriano, Ryan Murphy appeared to be emerging out of a shell like Boticelli’s Venus. Mimicking a famous painting IRL? Yep, it’s camp.

Wendi Deng Murdoch

Murdoch arrived in an outfit the looked like the ocean floor, all brain coral and undulating sea anemones. Though I am not in the business of awarding camp points to anyone less than six degrees of separation away from human axis of evil Rupert Murdoch, I must reluctantly accept that Murdoch’s Met Gala was sufficiently camp.

Camp-o-meter: 6.5/10, begrudgingly camp.

The Olsen Twins

MK & A’s floor-grazing Chanel leather getups give off extreme Morticia Addams vibes. Though the concept of twins wearing matching outfits strikes me as somewhat camp, these outfits are simply too stately and/or elegant to qualify. Camp stems from bad taste and Mary-Kate and Ashley could not access bad taste if they tried. It pains me to award the Olsen Twins a low score on anything, but these outfits are simply Not Camp.

Camp-o-meter: 4/10, slouching towards camp.

Katy Perry

What the actual f*ck. This woman clearly understands camp on a deeper level than I previously believed possible. On second evaluation, I should have expected this from the person responsible for “I Kissed a Girl” (extremely camp), but this look took me by complete surprise. Perry took the Surrealist concept of a readymade (the chandelier) and then cranked it up to eleven by wearing this Moschino dress and headpiece featuring over 7,000 Swarovski crystals. This look was so good — so camp! — it gave me a mild heart attack.

Camp-o-meter: 10/10, sickeningly camp.

I could write volumes about how 2018 fucking sucked, but at least the soundtrack was great.

Before moving on to my top 25 albums of the year, bear in mind that I consume albums in an archaic fashion: I pay for them (often beautiful vinyl versions); listen to them all the way through, in sequence, over and over and over again; and completely fall in love with them. These are the records that had my back during a dreadful year.

boygenius by Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus Matador Records

I have no hesitation putting this EP ahead of so many great full-length albums released in 2018. Look past its six-song tracklist and you’ll see this debut offering from indie super-group boygenius — comprising Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus — has more creative energy than almost anything else on this list.

And how could it not? Baker, Bridgers and Dacus are all indie superstars in their early-20s, all entering the height of their powers after releasing career-making solo records in 2017 and 2018. And those six songs? They’re not just throwaway tracks — they’re some of the best songs any of them have ever written. But more impressively to me, they’re not simply Baker, Bridgers or Dacus solo tracks with three-part harmonies jammed in — the trio put tremendous care in crafting something completely original and beautiful.

Clean by Soccer Mommy Fat Possum Records

Nashville-based songstress Sophie Allison delivered an indie rock classic on her new LP Clean, defying critics of her preceding record Collection. In fact, this might have been a motivating factor: at a recent Soccer Mommy show at D.C.’s Black Cat, Allison noted her (somewhat feigned) surprise when a reference to Collection drew a healthy cheer from the sold-out crowd.

For context, Collection marks Soccer Mommy’s transition from DIY bedroom pop project to full-fledged indie rock band, and set the mold for an amazing follow-up. On Clean, Allison’s singing and songwriting are bolder, the sound is more robust, her full band is on-point — and — now the future looks very bright.

Where We Were Together by Say Sue Me Damnably

I play Korean guitar pop band Say Sue Me’s debut LP a lot. It’s meticulously crafted, expertly performed and infectiously-fun — until the final track, when everything the quartet built comes tumbling down in a brilliant and emotional album-closer, “Coming to the End,” which is punctuated by a jaw-dropping extended guitar solo.

Like, I can’t hype up this solo enough — it emotes in the same way as the saxophone in “Jungleland” and or the slide guitar in “Layla’s” coda. It’s simultaneously thrilling and gut-wrenching as you hinge on the solo’s every twist and turn, set against pounding drums and crashing cymbals. It’s my favorite musical moment of 2018.

Lush by Snail Mail Matador Records

Before hearing Snail Mail AKA Lindsey Jordan’s debut LP Lush, I scoffed somewhat at Pitchfork Senior Editor Ryan Dombal’s assertion that the record “encompasses the once and future sound of indie rock.” Not that I wasn’t already impressed with Snail Mail’s preceding, self-recorded EPs — made before the Maryland native turned 18 — but that’s a BIG statement for anyone.

After hearing the album, though, I was like “Yep! Good call!”

“Pristine” is one of the record’s best tracks, but it’s also a fine description for Lush itself — every sound is polished and precise, but never manufactured; while Jordan’s songwriting already rivals the best in the game. And I’m not going to do that “for her age” bullshit — Jordan is a tremendous talent that’s touring her ass off, headlining shows around the world. We’re past that.

Fall Into the Sun by Swearin’ Merge Records

One of the most pleasant surprises of 2018 was the reformation of Swearin’ — which disintegrated in 2015 after the break-up of the band’s two creative forces, Allison Crutchfield and Kyle Gilbride. The Philly-based outfit initially pledged to forge on following the split, but that obviously proved difficult in the short term.

Fast-forward a few things and seemingly things are okay, both on- and off-stage. Musically, Swearin’ has never sounded better: Fall Into the Sun recalls the frantic guitar rock of the band’s 2012 and 2013 LPs, but there’s a new maturity in the sound, as well as an optimal balance between Crutchfield and Gilbride’s contributions.

Tell Me How You Really Feel by Courtney Barnett Milk! Records

Courtney Barnett had a tough act to follow preparing the sequel to her magnificent, Obama playlist-residing, superstar-making first LP: 2015’s Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit. And she succeeded — however the intense pressure to meet astronomical expectations, which Barnett refers to on the record, seemingly took its toll.

Tell Me How You Really Feel is dark. It’s the album where Barnett stops being whimsical and starts getting real. No more missed connections at the YMCA pool — on the first three singles alone we find our hero battling misogynist shitheads online and in real life (“Nameless, Faceless”), calling for an emotional break (“Need A Little Time,”) and trying to cope with isolation/loneliness (“City Looks Pretty”).

Historian by Lucy Dacus Matador Records

Remember Lucy Dacus from #10 on this list? Well, she released an even better album on her own earlier in 2018. Historian, the (fellow) Virginia native’s second record, is a star-making solo effort on which Dacus called all the shots.

Between this and boygenius, Dacus used 2018 to cement her status as one of the indie rock’s greatest talents. An artist wise beyond her years, Dacus is the only singer-songwriter I’ve ever felt comfortable comparing to Joni Mitchell — which is among the highest praise I can think of for any artist.

POST- by Jeff Rosenstock Polyvinyl Records

Jeff Rosenstock set the bar high and early, releasing his stellar solo debut on New Year’s Day and never looking back. That I’m still listening to the former Bomb the Music Industry! frontman’s album in mid-December is a feat in and of itself, but POST- earns #3 on this list due to Rosenstock’s unbridled exuberance, anthemic scream-alongs and dinosauric riffs. Fuck, even the song’s ballad (SOTY candidate “9/10”) has energy coursing through its wall of sound.

Slow Buzz by Remember Sports Father/Daughter Records

If it weren’t a complete cop-out, the debut LP from Philly pop-punk band Remember Sports would be #1B on this list. I can’t really find a flaw across its 12 perfectly-sequenced tracks — each and every one of which has a place and purpose (as well as killer riffs and rapturous drumming). Guitarist and singer Carmen Perry’s brutal and brilliant lyricism is Slow Buzz’s secret weapon as she brilliantly lays bare the emotional toll of falling in and out of love.

LONER by Caroline Rose New West Records

Not everyone struggles on their second album. Some, like the wildly-creative Caroline Rose, use it as an opportunity to completely reinvent themselves artistically. Rose released her folksy, roots rock-inspired debut I Will Not Be Afraid in 2014 but ultimately wasn’t satisfied with it — any anything. She described the situation (and more) to Pitch Perfect PR:

“I was 24, lonely, and realizing life might actually be as hard as people said it was. Gandalf had yet to raise his staff and part the seas for me,” she says with a straight face. “I felt a bit disillusioned with my music; it didn’t sound like my personality. I hadn’t dated in years, I was going to lose health care. I felt detached from the modern world.”

So what did she do about it? “I joined Tinder. I turned 25 and rented my first real apartment and painted it bright colors. I started socializing more and little by little, weeded out all my clothes that weren’t red. I embraced my queerdom. I had a girlfriend, we traveled the country, we broke up. I discussed politics, capitalism and Rihanna. For better or worse, I became a member of the modern world. Turns out the modern world is terrifying.”

Rose got more personal and aggressive in her musical approach and tried to be more sonically diverse with her new work. She also injected humor into the mix — leading directly to essential LONER tracks like “Bikini” and “Money,” but also giving her music a lighthearted, fun spirit as she creates vivid scenes and characters. Folksy, roots rock turned into decadent indie pop heavy on guitars, keys and synths. So yeah, she found her sound. And it’s unlike anything we’ve ever heard before — that’s why she gave it a name: “schizo drift.”

LONER is my favorite album of 2018. Rose recently posted on social that she’s beginning work on the follow-up — let’s hope it’s [adjusts tie] more of the same.

Frozen Pool Forensics: Bounce-Back Candidates – Part 1

There’s plenty of fantasy heroes season after season but we also see disappointment from others to accompany the positives. It can’t always be cheery when discussing players who did not perform to expectations, though many of the following players have valid reasons for down campaigns in 2017-18. Indeed, some just plain and simply did not bring it and looking to their advanced statistics they stand reason to turn the tide in the coming year. A lot of variables outside player control also came into play with a couple of the following; hence they stand a good chance to turn things around. Capitalizing on drops in value is always a savvy way to go about building a well-rounded roster, so here’s a few guys who may very well see their market price dip thanks to their shortcomings in the prior campaign.

Wayne Simmonds

This coming draft will be the latest you’ll ever see Wayne Simmonds selected after his down season due to a laundry list of injuries. The definition of a trooper, the power forward played through a broken ankle, torn thumb ligaments, a pelvis tear, and a pulled groin. On top of this, he also just so happened to lose six teeth as a side note. As a Simmonds owner in a keeper setting, this past campaign was worrisome as he hurdles towards age 30 with decline on the mind. Power forwards of this mold tend to fade fast due to their style of play, case in point Corey Perry. Alas, when the injuries were reported the down statistics across the board are more than understandable. Now the fact he almost scored 25 goals with all these impairments seems astounding. More so than anything, Simmonds is a likely bounce back candidate for 2018-19 is a contract year for the Flyers gritty scorer. If you’ve followed my writing at all you know how vital I feel securing players in this scenario can be to fantasy success. Look for the lanky forward to re-establish himself as the elite multi-category cog he is next year on an offensively gifted Philadelphia squad.

Jeff Skinner

Though I did not foresee the likes of Noah Hanifin and Dougie Hamilton changing zip codes anytime soon, Jeff Skinner is still probably waiting on the phone call telling him he’s been dealt. If I’m him, I cannot wait to leave Raleigh, North Carolina, as he just may be the worst utilized forward in the game today. Why Skinner sees third line assignment dumbfounds me as does his second power play duty being the sniper he is. A down year yes but still only one short of 25 goals with a 2.1 PTS/60 seeing Derek Ryan as his center most frequently. You can forgive the 26-year old Toronto native somewhat for not matching last year’s 37 goals. Despite the lesser players he sees time with, Skinner drives play when on the ice as evident in his strong 55.01 CF%. I am basically begging for the Hurricanes to deal the former figure skater to a stronger contender that will actually utilize him in the correct fashion. By that I mean in the top six where his skills are best served. Skinner shot two percent below his career average 10.9% in 2017-18 while still putting a healthy dose of shots on net with 277. Look for positive regression towards the mean whether he stays with Carolina or changes uniform in 2018-19.

Jeff Carter

Jeff Carter does not find himself here because he is need of redemption but more so because his very lengthy injury with low offense overall may drop his draft rank. Only appearing in 27 games total, it was business as usual for the veteran center scoring 13 goals in that time while setting up nine. Carter is cemented into the second line pivot position and a role on the primary power play in Los Angeles. Now with the addition of Ilya Kovalchuk, this top six just became a lot more interesting. Though a fan of the That 70’s line Carter centers with wings Tanner Pearson and Tyler Toffoli, the thought of adding the KHL leading scorer to his side is tantalizing. He will surely see time with him on the top power play but if the Russian does not work out with Anze Kopitar, seemingly Carter would be next in line to try to ignite chemistry with Kovalchuk. Most important to note regarding Carter is that he essentially had a season off and will be incredibly fresh for the coming campaign. Though he has shown no age-related decline, a 33-year old being afforded this sort of break will do wonders for the swift skater. Look for Carter to get off to a quick start in 2018-19 and continue being a consistent source of goals as always.

Bryan Little

Bryan Little really got the short end of the stick when Paul Stastny was traded to the Winnipeg Jets. The 30-year old center was the second line center on this squad for some time and had the cushy role of feeding Nikolaj Ehlers and Patrik Laine yet never seemingly got it going as in seasons past. His first full campaign since 2013-14, Little only managed 43 points and the second-lowest points per game of his career. As someone who rostered him all season because of his face-offs won, it was a shame to see the generally consistent scorer not capitalize on a season that saw him play more than 60 games for the first time since 2014-15. There are no excuses to be made for his inability to produce at least assists centering two dangerous wingers, so when Stastny was brought into the fold he received the boot from the top six thus killing any shot to finish strong. With no guarantee Stastny returns, Little finds himself likely to be at the helm of the second line should he sign elsewhere. Before this season, Little was a consistent source of points from 2013-14 onward, with point per game marks of .78/.74/.74/.80 respectively. Very much still in his prime, bank on last year being a blip on the radar and capitalize on him proving he still has what it takes.

Cam Talbot

The fact I won my redraft league taking this man in the first round deserves a drink in itself. There’s no reason to dwell on what we all know was a nightmare campaign though he still managed a 30-plus win season. Sneakily, Talbot finished the fantasy season strong with 7 wins in the last 13 starts to go with a 2.81 GAA and .919 SV%. Most may be aware that Talbot also welcomed twins into the world during the previous campaign and that could easily have had negative effects on his performance. After the Jekyll and Hyde act of the Oilers in the two seasons past, one can foresee draft stock falling for those not named Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. If there is one positive to Edmonton’s 2017-18, it’s that they can only go up from here. If having a 30-win season in a down year albeit with mediocre ratios is bad for the workhorse goaltender, then he’s worthy of number two consideration without question still. If the Oilers can just get some offense from young players such as Kailer Yamamoto, Ryan Strome, and Jesse Puljujarvi, on top of their two star forwards, then things should turn around for Talbot. The Oilers defense is still spotty but the real killer for them last season was the inadequate forward depth at the NHL level. There is too much what if involved with Edmonton currently, so investing in Talbot as your number one isn’t advisable. Don’t be scared off entirely for he is surely a strong compliment to a more reliable number one.

Brandon Saad

Much like the team discussed above, the Chicago Blackhawks also served as example of the struggle to compete when you are inadequate overall at the forward position. No longer the championship juggernaut they once were, this team was awfully top heavy with a weak bottom six that did not generate offense. In what may one day go down as Taylor Hall for Adam Larsson trade larceny, the Artemi Panarin–Brandon Saad swap looks quite wretched on Stan Bowman’s resume. These are dark times in the windy city, with Jonathan Toews not touching the 60-point plateau in three years and Duncan Keith matching his rookie point output albeit with ten fewer goals this time. There’s promise in young Alex DeBrincat but for how long can this team sit on Patrick Kane’s back as he heads into his age-30 campaign. Saad absolutely must rebound in 2018-19 for the Blackhawks to have any hope of attaining a postseason berth. Matching a career best 233 shots on goal last year, he just could not bury the chances shooting 7.3% compared to 11.4% in 2016-17. Like Skinner expect positive regression towards the mean leading to Saad rediscovering the 20-goal plateau in 2018-19. Do not expect astounding offense from the American on this team though he should serve you well as solid goal scoring depth.

"I love television, so I was never against going on to another series," says the actress Christina Hendricks, who is best known for playing Joan Holloway (later Joan Harris), a Madison Avenue advertising agency’s office manager who claws her way up the corporate food-chain over the course of seven seasons on AMC’s landmark drama series Mad Men, as we sit down at the offices of The Hollywood Reporter to record an episode of THR's 'Awards Chatter' podcast. The 42-year-old, whose work on that show garnered her six Emmy nominations for best supporting actress in a drama series and two Critics' Choice Award nominations — and wins — in that same category, emphasizes, "I just wanted it to be the right one."

Mad Men aired its final episode on May 17, 2015. Less than three years later, on Feb. 26 of this year, Hendricks began starring in another — albeit very different — series, NBC’s Good Girls, as one of three suburban Detroit housewives who try to extricate themselves from desperate financial straits by teaming together to rob a grocery store, only to find themselves in hotter water than ever. "When this opportunity came up," she says, "I had to ask, 'Do I want to do this every day for potentially seven years?' And I looked at these two other women [co-stars Retta and Mae Whitman], and this writing and this tone, and it was so different. I loved the balance of the drama and the comedy, and being able to stretch my muscles or whatever, and play in comedy alongside the drama, which I would say most people know me for. And I thought, 'That would be fun to do every day.'"

Hendricks was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, but grew up in Portland, Oregon, and Twin Falls, Idaho. As a kid, she felt like something of a social outcast, and her physical appearance reflected that. But through a series of unexpected events, she wound up modeling, and enjoying it, which inspired her to move the big city. She recalls, "I just thought, 'I have this inkling that being in New York City and getting out of here is gonna get me closer to who or where I want to be, and I'm willing to take that risk and that adventure.'" The next stop was Los Angeles, where modeling led to commercials, which in turn led to her first outright acting jobs.

For many years after entering the acting profession and studying her craft, Hendricks found steady work, if not a major breakthrough part or show. She was on two programs on MTV; Brandon Tartikoff's Beggars and Choosers (1999-2001) on Showtime; and then was offered a holding deal with a man she came to regard as her "fairy godfather," John Wells, which spanned nearly three years and led to some important early opportunities, including a four-episode guest arc on NBC’s E.R. in 2002. After that arrangement came to an end, she also did three episodes of Firefly (2002-2003).

But as time marched on, Hendricks grew frustrated at a piece of feedback that she received from many casting directors and creative people. She was told not infrequently that her physical type — which is voluptuous — precluded her from playing parts that she believed she had proven in auditions that she was capable of playing. As she remembers, "I thought, 'Well, that's shitty. There are all types of people doing all types of careers.' And I started to realize that I was being seen in a very specific way, and I was surprised and a bit naive. It took me a little while."

Hendricks was at a low point after "a particularly brutal pilot season" when Mad Men first crossed her desk, with interest in her for the parts of Peggy or Midge, initially, before she came to audition for and be offered the part of Joan, the "queen bee" of an ad agency's secretarial pool. "I had to decide between [Mad Men] and another project," she explains. "Mad Men was the one I wanted to do, and my agent wanted me to do the other. ... AMC wasn't really a network. It [the show] was a period piece. I wasn't told if I was gonna be a series regular or not. Like, everything was a strike against it, but the pilot was so good. And I said [to my team], 'I've been on the things that seemed like they were sure bets, and they weren't. I always went for the fastest line at the grocery store, and it wasn't working. So let's do the thing that we really, really love and want.'" At which point her agents fired her, something that she can laugh about now, but didn't find very funny at the time.

Hendricks and her collaborators shot the pilot for Mad Men — and then had to wait nearly a year to find out if the show would be a go. (She spent that time working as a florist, something she had always wanted to do in addition to acting.) It was, of course, greenlighted, and she remembers the making of the full first season as blissful, not knowing or thinking much about how viewers and critics would respond to it, but just working hard. Once the show did hit the air, it quickly became a critics' darling and her character a fan favorite. ("People were really cheerleaders for her," the actress remembers.) Hendricks' personal life also changed. She became famous, and therefore the subject of media attention, not all of it kind or respectful or having anything to do with what made her famous in the first place. "All of a sudden this focus on your physicality becomes very, very great, which is hard," she admits. "I was working so hard on this character, and they just kept wanting to talk about my 1960s bra. It was like, 'Listen, guys, it's pointy, I get it. It's super-exciting. But there was really only one conversation that we had about it, and that was it.' There was just tons and tons of focus on it."

For the very most part, though, Hendricks' Mad Men experience was a beautiful one that challenged and rewarded her in ways she never could have imagined. "It really was one of those magical rides," she says. "It just felt like a very exciting thing to be a part of." When the show neared its end, the actress felt a blur of emotions. It was alternately heartbreaking, "like having to break up with someone, but not because you fell out of love, because one was moving away," she says, and scary "knowing that I may never find something as special" and exciting "knowing that so many opportunities were going to be presented because of this." The opportunity that Hendricks chose to pursue as her next big project, Good Girls, couldn't be much more different than Mad Men. It airs on a broadcast network, rather than a premium cable service; it is set in and very much addresses issues of the present, rather than the past; and though it will be competing at the Emmys as a drama, as did Mad Men, it could just as easily have been classified as a comedy. "There's a lot of laughing involved in this, and surreal wackiness," she acknowledges, adding that it has been "nice to break up some of this intensity that I've been dealing with for years and years and years doing these really heavy dramas."
