at a certain point i think we need to acknowledge that art is very rarely created accidentally. if you can see a theme in a work than that theme was, more likely than not, at least somewhat intentional on behalf of the creator. you don't put a piece of yourself out into the world without thinking about what it means at least a little bit.

About 100 employees were laid off in total (8%) and one of the main reasons listed is "underperformance," "sharp drop in popularity" and "poor reception of Lightfall."

So you know when for the last year and a half content creators have been shitting and pissing on the game as a full-time job and the amount of negativity and ragebait content became the only thing to make content about for them? Well they certainly won't take the blame, but I will let it be known. These people either don't understand the influence they have or they do and they're doing it on purpose, and I don't know which of these two options is worse, but I am 100% confident that their campaign of rage and hate contributed to this.

You don't base your entire community around constantly hating everything about the only game you play (despite clearly not enjoying it anymore) and somehow avoid galvanising thousands and thousands of people into perceiving the game negatively. Imagine being employees who have barely worked there for 2 years and the only community reception they've seen is 24/7 hate train for their work and then they get fired because of "poor reception" and "drop in popularity." How can they not take that personally? I am absolutely devastated for these people who delievered a banger product and who were met with an unrelenting barrage of toxic gamer children which ended up having more sway over their boss than them.

Which brings me to the next bit and that's FUCK THE CEO. He is now my mortal enemy #1. I am projecting psychic blasts directly into his brain. What an absolute spineless coward who is more willing to bow down to fucking gamers than to protect his own employees. This is absolutely rage inducing because this has happened before. From the article from 2021 about the toxic culture at Bungie:

You could spend a lifetime thoroughly researching SWANA cuisine and fashion to authentically and respectfully incorporate it into your worldbuilding as accurately as possible and it means NOTHING to me if you don't put even half of that energy to throw your support behind real life SWANA causes. I’m not treating anyone like a champion of our people before I’ve heard their stance on “controversial” topics that concern us - and if they abstain from commenting to protect their brand, then their use of elements of our culture is less than nothing to me; it’s abhorrent.

And on that topic, I wish we could stop treating SWANA representation by white creators as though it were some sort of charity work. If anything, THEY benefit from it the most. Our culture is so rich and intricate that by incorporating it into their work, its value goes up immensely. Unless they want their work to be the same old tired rehashed eurocentric stuff, they had *better* put in the time and effort to look into inspiration from outside of their comfort circles, because I’m certain the average reader has had their fill of Fantasy England and Fantasy France, or at least I hope so. Of course the problem is that more often than not, SWANA representation is riddled with orientalism and fetishization or stripped from its connection to actual SWANA people and overwritten to perfectly accomodate the prioritization of white people into it over us, that when the representation does actually have some tether to reality and to us, despite that being the bare minimum, we want to cry with gratitude, and that makes me so sad. I get it, I REALLY do. I am also overcome with excitement when I simply hear a word in my language in a piece of fiction that I enjoy. These joys are so rare to us that we can’t help but revel in them. I don’t fault anyone for that. I just look forward to the day our response to seeing ourselves gets farther from ‘Thank you’ and closer to ‘You’re welcome’.

I’m sure all of this applies to many other marginalized cultures as well. I’m just speaking to what I can personally attest to.

want to give my two cents on the AI usage in the maestro trailer--

i think seventeen doing a whole concept that is anti-AI is very cool, especially as creatives themselves i think it's good that they're speaking up against it and i hope it gets more ppl talking about the issue. i also understand on a surface level the artistic choice (whether it was made by the members, the mv director, or whoever else), to directly use AI in contrast to real, human-made visuals and music in order to criticize it. i also appreciate that they clearly stated the intention of the use of AI at the beginning of the video

however, although i understand it to an extent, i do not agree with the choice to use AI to critique AI. one of the main ethical concerns with generative AI is that it is trained on other artists' work without their knowledge, consent, or compensation. and even when AI generated images are being used to critique AI, it still does not negate this particular ethical concern

the use of AI to critique also does not negate the fact that this is work that could have been done by an actual artist. i have seen some people argue that it's okay in this context because it's a critique specifically about AI, and it is content that never would have been done by a real artist anyway because it doesn't make sense for the story they're trying to tell. but i disagree. i think you can still tell the exact same story without using AI

and in fact, i would argue that it would make the anti-AI message stronger if they HAD paid an artist to draw/animate the scenes that are supposed to represent AI generated images. wouldn't it just be proof that humans can create images that are just as bad and nonsensical and soulless as AI, but that AI can't replicate the creativity and beauty and basic fucking anatomy that's in human-made art?

it feels very obvious this was not just a way to cut corners and costs like a lot of scummy people are using AI for. ultimately it was a very intentional creative decision, i just personally think it was a very poor one. and even if some ethical considerations were taken into account before this decision, i certainly don't think all of them were. at the very least i feel like the decision undermines the message they want to convey

i would also like to recognize that i myself am not an artist, and i have seen some artists that are totally on board with the use of AI in this specific context, so clearly this is not a topic that is cut and dry. but generative AI is still new, and i think it's important to keep having these conversations
