From an Israeli perspective, the Palestine laboratory has had few downsides. Israel has worked closely with Washington for decades, often operating in places where the US preferred covert support rather than public backing. For example, Israel supported the police forces of Guatemala, El Salvador, and Costa Rica during the Cold War when the US Congress had blocked US agencies from officially doing so. Both Israel and the US trained and armed death squads in Colombia well into the 2000s. The former drug trafficker Carlos Castaño, who ran a far-right paramilitary force, explains in his ghost-written autobiography, “I learned an infinite amount of things in Israel [in the 1980s], and to that country I owe part of my essence, my human and military achievements. I copied the concept of paramilitary forces from the Israelis.” He reportedly arrived in Israel in 2004 after fleeing his own country. Colombia has long been the most significant strategic US ally in the region. A Colombian government-appointed truth commission released its findings in 2022 about the grim realities during the country’s civil war between 1958 to 2016. The US was found to have known that its Colombian allies were running death squads and yet Washington’s backing increased. The Global South has been controlled and pacified with (principally) Israeli and US weapons.

The film focuses on the life of Antoni Benaiges , a teacher from Mont-roig del Camp, in the Baix Camp, in Tarragona, Catalunya, who in 1935 was sent to the public school in Bañuelos de Bureba, a small town in the province of Burgos, Castilla la Vieja (Castilla y León). Little by little, and thanks to a pioneering and revolutionary teaching methodology for the time, he will begin to transform the lives of his students, but also that of the town, which is not always to everyone's taste.

It's based on the book of the same name by Francesc Escribano and has been adapted for the big screen by Albert Val, and its director is Patrícia Font.

To tell the story of Antoni Benaiges (Enric Auquer), the film interweaves past and present and the master's story will be known through the eyes of Ariadna (Laia Costa), a woman looking for her great-grandfather who disappeared during the Civil War.

The producers of the film wanted to emphasize the essence of this exciting story: " 'El mestre que va prometre el mar'  is a great story that has been unfairly forgotten for many years. With this film we are repairing an oblivion and at the same time valuing the work of the republican teachers and recognizing the struggle of so many people who still continue to search for their relatives buried anonymously in mass graves. An exciting and fully valid story.

Part of the technical team is made up of David Valldepérez, director of photography; Josep Rosell, art director; Dani Arregui, editor, and Natasha Arizu, composer, among other professionals.  

The film is shot for six weeks in various locations in the demarcation of Barcelona, in Mura, and in Briviesca (Burgos). It is a production of Minoria Absoluta, Lastor Media, Filmax and Mestres Films AIE. 

RTVE and TV3 participate and it has the support of the ICAA and the ICEC . Filmax is in charge of distribution to cinemas.

I'm reading this book called The Palestine Laboratory by Antony Loewenstein, and it's just kind of shocking that, despite the book being specifically about Israel, there's still so much interconnected stuff involving the US and the war crimes the two committed together, such as both of them supplying weapons during Operation Condor.

Like, as far as I've read, if the US has an embargo on trading weapons to certain countries, they'd just hit up Israel and have them sell in their stead. That's insane.

Israel has worked closely with Washington for decades, often operating in places where the US preferred covert support rather than public backing. For example, Israel supported Guatemala, El Salvador, and Costa Rice during the Cold War when the US Congress had blocked US agencies from officially doing so. (The Palestine Laboratory, Loewenstein, p. 29)

It was clearly Israel's desire to be a willing participant in Washington's domineering goals in Central America in the 1980s. An Israeli minister of economy, Yaakov Meridor, said in the early years of the decade that Israel wanted to be a proxy for the US interests where the global superpower was not able or willing to sell weapons directly. "We will say to the Americans: Don't compete with us in Taiwan; don't compete with us in South Africa; don't compete with us in the Caribbean or in other places where you cannot sell arms directly. Let us do it ... Israel will be your intermediary." (The Palestine Laboratory, Loewenstein, p. 39)

They really are just an extension of the USA's "soft colonialism" in the East.

Around the day of Sant Antoni (January 17th), many towns and cities in Catalonia celebrate the festivity of els Tres Tombs, ("the three laps" or "the three turns").

Traditionally, on this day the muleteers and farmers brought their carts and animals to be blessed, since Saint Anthony is the patron saint of domestic animals, muleteers and vehicles. Nowadays, people don't work in the countryside with animals anymore, so the parade consists of old wagons that recall the old trades of the town. Carts and horses go around the city centre three times (that's why it's called "the three laps") to receive the blessing. Some people also bring their pets to be blessed.

It might seem like a Catholic festivity -after all, it became one-, but the origins are found in pagan traditions of pre-Christian times. The ritual of going around a temple to receive a blessing was already done in different Ancient Mediterranean cultures. The Romans walked in circles around a temple to be favoured by the gods, and this passed on to some Catholic traditions of walking around a saint's relic that continue to be done nowadays. It's believed that this practice is related to the Muslim religious ceremony of doing seven laps around the Ka'ba, which ancient Arabs venerated since pre-Islamic times.

In the els Tres Tombs parade, the animals' welfare is taken into account and protected by law. There must be veterinarians who certify the animals' well-being before, during and after the parade, and the marching bands and drummers have to be located in a separate part of the parade so that it won't be too loud for the horses.
