What I find interesting about the response to the Barbie trailers is usually when there’s going to be a live-action adaptation of some beloved childhood thing, people tend to react with wariness at best and hostility at worst, but this time around I’m mostly just seeing excitement (on tumblr anyway). People are really, really looking forward to this movie.
I’m sure the excitement is in large part due to the light-hearted, campy tone and bright colours on display in the trailers. A lot of us are tired of dour, desaturated takes on things that are known and loved for being colourful and cartoony, so yeah, it’s a relief to see indications that Barbie 2023 isn’t going to repeat the disastrous mistakes of the live-action Winx Club series or that leaked Powerpuff Girls script that thankfully was not made into an actual show.
But I think there’s a little more to it than that.
I think it’s also because there’s a strong sense that this movie understands it is based on a toy and is not only unashamed of that fact, but eager to take full advantage of the... toyness, for lack of a better word. Everything we see of Barbie Land and the Barbies and Kens who live there screams “this is a Toy World where Toys live; this world and its inhabitants operate based on Toy Logic, not Real World Logic” - and I mean literally everything; the brightly coloured plastic aesthetic of Barbie Land, the unquestioned co-existence of many different variations of Barbie and Ken, the way Barbie stands on tiptoes when she takes her shoes off, the ridiculous “beach you off” exchange between the Kens that sounds like a little kid play-acting what they think conflict between grown-ups is like - it’s all telling us this movie is going to revel in being a story about toys (and it’s likely the plot will involve some sort of clash between Barbie Land’s Toy Logic and the real world’s Real World Logic, which is a very interesting concept).
This kind of unapologetic revelling-in-toyness is something that I’d like to see more of in live-action things based on toys. If you ask me, Toy Logic is why the 80s G.I. Joe and Transformers cartoons hold up so much better than most of those franchises’ live-action movies; those shows aren’t literally about toys in the way that Barbie 2023 is literally about toys, but they do run on the logic of a kid playing with action figures, and that’s something that I think is integral to their appeal.

Beach Party Himbo
We’re a little closer to the premier of “Barbie,” so that means more Barbie reviews! This week, I wanted to look at a doll made specifically for the movie, and I especially wanted to look at everyone’s favorite Barbie accessory, which means that it’s time for us to look at “Barbie: The Movie Ken!” Let’s take a look at how Barbie’s second banana came out and if this Ken deserves your money.
Tumblr media
From what we’ve seen so far, “Barbie: The Movie” takes place in a world where almost everyone’s a Barbie or Ken, with the exceptions of Midge and Allen. Don’t worry, Midge and Allen, you’ll always have a place in my heart. Ryan Gosling’s Ken, whom we’ll be looking at today, is the beach-themed boyfriend of Margot Robbie’s Barbie, the star of the whole shebang. From what we’ve seen in the trailers, Ken is not exactly carrying a lot between the ears, but he adores Barbie enough to accompany her on her adventure. Until the movie comes out, that’s about all I got here. It’s kinda hard to talk about a movie character whose movie hasn’t come out yet. I could tell you about my many Ken dolls, but I don’t think that will be helpful. Though I do adore my Kens. Anyways, moving on.
The dolls for “Barbie: The Movie” are actually aimed more at collectors than kids or casual fans. What this means is that they tend to be pricier, but with really good articulation. These dolls also have higher quality outfits, which makes sense, since the dolls can do more than the average Barbie. You don’t wanna wear out the outfits. While Barbie products in general are very easy to come by, I actually haven’t had any luck in finding the movie dolls at mass retail yet. Based on everything I’ve read, they’re a limited edition line of dolls, and from what I’ve seen, they can only be found online. I’ve had pretty good luck with Amazon and Mattel’s website, but absolutely zero success at physical stores.
In terms of build, Ken looks very pretty. This is a guy who very much works out and definitely has a beach bod, which, based on what we know of the character so far, is exactly what we want. His head does a pretty good job replicated Ryan Gosling in doll form, but the lack of the stubble that Gosling has in the movie makes this Ken look younger and preppier than you’d expect. Also of note here is that this Ken, unlike most Kens you’ll find at mass retail, has rooted hair. It’s also gelled to hold in place, which I personally think works very well for this doll, especially since it’s a doll based off a man who’s supposed to be a doll.
Tumblr media
Hair of gold, brain of lead
Ken’s outfit is very bright and colorful, which I absolutely love. It’s nice to see dudes in bright colors, especially since society keeps encouraging guys to wear drab, darker colors. The world of “Barbie: The Movie” is bright, fun, and colorful, and I am delighted to see Ken wearing outfits that go along with that. Ken’s outfit consists of white sneakers, beach shorts, and an open beach shirt, so that I can gaze upon Ryan Gosling’s sculpted (literally) abs and be reminded that I no longer have the metabolism I did in college and that I should probably eat healthier, but that I won’t because burgers taste too good.
Tumblr media
I could look like this if I worked out more! And got extensive surgery! And dyed my hair! And was 12 inches high! And was made of plastic!
Ken, like every doll in the movie line, is heavily articulated, which is absolutely what you want for a doll whose whole purpose in life is to party on a beach. He’s got joints in his shoulders, arms, wrists, legs, knees, and neck, so you can put him in all kinds of poses.
Tumblr media
Thirst Trap Ken
Aside from his clothes, Ken comes with one accessory: a blue surfboard. It’s proportionate to Ken, which means it’s pretty big. I am a bit let down by the fact that it doesn’t have any detail, but if the idea was to replicate what a classic toy surfboard from the 50’s would look like, then I guess mission accomplished.
Tumblr media
Does this paint job have you feeling “board?” Surf pun! Delightful.
The surfboard has two clips on top, which you can attach to Ken’s wrist, so he can hold the board, or feet, so he can ride the board. The clips are pretty strong, so Ken’s not going to fall off the board any time soon, but that also means that you might have a hard time detaching the board from Ken’s arm. Just keep that in mind so you don’t break something.
Tumblr media
I know nothing about surfing culture, so anything I say here will sound forced.
“Barbie: The Movie Ken” has so far only been found online, where he goes for about $25, and is recommended for ages 3+, but is aimed at older kids and collectors. Would I recommend him? Definitely. He’s a very good doll and a fun addition to any fan’s collection. Besides that, he’s also the least expensive Movie Ken doll currently available. If his price seems a little high, remember that this is a very articulated, limited edition doll, which makes that price a pretty good deal in my book. Next week, we’ll be wrapping up our look at Barbie with one more doll from the movie line, so come on back and see what’s happening! This is JS signing off and wishing you Happy Toy Hunting!

hard to believe that it isn't ai generated :( lol saw some ppl commenting how it looks ai generated. can't blame em
its gonna take years for even a trailer to come out but what are some things you're wishing to see in the movie? i hope the one guy from the concept art is her love interest, but most likely hes prob not. based on the little info we got on it, how do u think its gonna play out? any theories?
would be cool if they have a spin off series of her and her possible friend group's adventures in nyc
Yeah :(
I think it's possible he's a love interest but the romance won't be a big focus. Maybe he'll be a supportive friend who has some shippy moments with her.
When I imagine what the movie will be like, I think of animated Barbie movies, except on big screen. You got a talented young girl with magic powers, her sidekicks (musical notes and possibly animals), supportive girl friends and a guy who may or may not be a love interest, an evil lady that probably wants to steal her magic, the themes of being yourself and following your dreams and of course, songs. There are also modern fairytale vibes: I remember reading somewhere that the notes were based off the seven dwarfs, and the villainess reminds me of the evil queen/stepmother, except she's jealous not of Melody's beauty, but of her singing.
The villain lady, Rose Stellar, is probably the most interesting to me (also she's gorgeous). There is an image where Melody is singing at someone's grave, so what if one or both of her parents passed away? Imagine if it was her mother who gave her love of music, and after her death, maybe Melody abandons music for a while or the other way around - clings to music because it reminds her of her mom.
Tumblr media
Then, when Melody arrives to the city, Rose could step in as an evil "stepmother", promising to take the girl under her wing and help her reach more fame, while secretly planning to destroy her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I want her to have a big villain song. It could be her manipulating Melody (something like "Evil Like Me", except it's "Don't you want to be popular like me?") or her singing about her evil plans and her jealousy when she's alone (I keep thinking of "Little Girls" though in that case the antagonist is someone who wants to rise to fame, not someone who wants to maintain it).
Anyway, I think the movie could go something like this:
- Melody's childhood. We see her friends (Nina and Sunny), her family, how she discovered her love for music
- Jump to the present day, we see her deciding to go to the big city or her discovering the magical notes that serve as her guides
- In the city, she meets new people and builds up the courage to start performing in public (like at the park or at the square), attracting a lot of attention
- Rose notices her and gets jealous. Maybe she knows about the notes from the beginning or maybe, she finds out later. Either way, she wants Melody's magic and she wants to destroy her career before she gets more popular than her
- So she pretends to like Melody and says she wants to help her
- Notes try to make sure that Melody doesn't get caught up in all the fame and forget about her friends
- In the climax of the movie, Rose is close to achieving what she wants, and Melody finds out her true intentions and loses all hope. She thought her idol liked her, but actually, it was all fake, and maybe, without the notes, she feels like she's not good enough.
- Her friends reach out and tell her it's not true, and they have a touching song together (this is where I think "Sunny's letter" could come in)
- I can see something like the scene from "Belle" happening, where she starts out singing alone, and then more voices tune in, until it's the whole audience singing with her
- In the end, Rose is defeated, and Melody finds her own way to be a singer. Perhaps even helps kids like her to learn music
A spin-off series could be fun. Though Zag already has a concept for a series about a music school, Superstar, and I hope it wasn't abandoned completely because I love the designs of the charas.

Tbh! I am... cautiously excited for the barbie movie. I must agree that "Dance the Night" is a banger, and overall the movie does look... possibly promising! I really adore the set and character designs, and it looks like Margot and Ryan will be a great Barbie and Ken. We'll see how it pans out when it gets released in theaters, but until then, I'll keep my fingers crossed that it meets my expectations.
I want to be cautiously optimistic - I know Margot Robbie has stated the trailers are hiding a lot - but I just don't understand some of the decisions.
Ken being misogynistic to the doctor in that one scene rubs me such the wrong way. I'm not quite sold on Ryan Gosling's Ken in general either but maybe he'll surprise me.
Canonizing that godforsaken Aqua song makes my head spin. I am aware it's only being sampled but that doesn't matter. It's still being used. And why?? Why would you want to use the song that says Barbie and Ken are just dumb and horny??
I guess the sets in Barbieland do look kind of fun. I appreciate the generous amounts of pink; but it's not like that's the only color Barbie uses in excess. It's her signature color, but she's also been in plenty of blue, yellow, orange, and purple outfits. Hoping to see some other colors like those used too.
Also I am annoyed at the lack of references to the already existing Barbie movies that have been going on since 2001 BUT I understand this is Barbie the doll/icon and it doesn't have to reference them if they don't want to. I don't wanna whine too much about that anyway, especially since I criticized how others were complaining about how they aren't basing things off the LitD version of Barbie. It's hypocritical of me.
Overall I just don't understand who this is actually intended for. It doesn't feel enough like a Barbie movie made BY Barbie fans. It's giving me too many "SNL/making FUN of Barbie" feelings and how "THIS will change Barbie into a REAL feminist icon". Like, Barbie isn't perfect, but she does have a more feminist history than most people realize. We should continue to be critical of Mattel and its decisions of course, but she's more than just a blonde bimbo stereotype. And she is meant to be projected upon, meaning ANY kind of girl, or anyone of any gender really, can imagine who they can become. This INCLUDES super pink and girly people that just want to have fun and look fabulous and throw parties all that jazz. I'm afraid of this falling into the Hollywood idea of demonizing femineity, but I'm hoping to be wrong and eat my words.
I will say I totally agree with you on "Dance the Night". I've been listening to it a lot lately. It's very fun and makes me want to get up and dance (even though I'm not a good dancer lol).

Amy Schumer Talks 'Barbie' Exit, Suggests Mindy Kaling as Replacement
yahoo
Amy Schumer was an inspired choice to headline Sony/Mattel’s upcoming live-action Barbie movie, but the dream was short-lived. The Trainwreck comedian’s casting was announced in December, but by March she had to drop out of the project because of a scheduling conflict.
“I’m so disappointed, I really wanted it to work out,” Schumer told Yahoo Movies (watch above) at CinemaCon last week, where she was joined by her Snatched costar Goldie Hawn. “But I hope it happens anyway. And I can’t say enough nice things about Mattel. They have such good intentions, and I really hope it comes together for them. I offered to help in any way I could. But yeah, I’m so bummed. I really tried to make it work.”
Schumer reportedly put in some work on the screenplay for the film, which Variety noted will be in the same vein as fish-out-of-water comedies like Splash, Enchanted, and Big.
As for who should replace her in the film, which is slated to open in June, 2018, Schumer had jokes (“I think Goldie should play Barbie…” or “anybody from the cast of Big Little Lies“) before one offering suggestion that could excite comedy fans — as well as those still excited by a Barbie movie bent on casting against type when it comes to the paper-thin blonde doll the film’s based on.
“Mindy [Kaling] would be great,” Schumer said of the Mindy Project creator and star who also a couple other high-profile films in the works with A Wrinkle in Time and Ocean’s Eight. “I don’t know, I’m excited to see who [gets cast].”
You will still see Schumer in Snatched, which opens May 12.
