What's your opinion on Sonic Omens and the whole drama surrounding the game's Patreon? Something I haven't seen brought up yet in this discussion are comparisons to doujin circles and how lax Japan is towards monetization of "fan" projects compared to other countries. Do you believe there to be a risk of SEGA reversing their fairly lax stance on Sonic fan games up until this point?
The last time this happened, when ArcForged was crowdfunding Sonic Smackdown, I got in to a heated argument with them on Twitter that I believe ended in them blocking me because I told them to knock it off.
I was riled up enough that I started rolling around doing a video about why monetizing fan games was a bad idea, and by the time those ideas were gelling together in my head enough for me to start writing, ArcForged announced they were ending Smackdown's crowdfunding.
It seemed mean to go forward with a video where I drag them through the mud after they eventually did the right thing, so I never wrote that script.
Now definitely seems like a good time to dust those ideas off again, though.
Japan’s doujin scene is a complicated one, because it’s important to remember that a lot of us don’t live there, and aren’t exposed to the finer points of contention surrounding it. We see “somebody is selling fan comics!” without necessarily digesting what that actually means. There’s a density to Japan that lets niches fly under the radar but also thrive in ways they wouldn’t in America.
Also keep in mind that if selling “doujin games” were actually totally legal and accepted, Japan would be awash with unofficial versions of anything that was popular. Look at Touhou -- that was a franchise sort of born in the doujin scene, it thrived in the doujin scene, and people have made careers there. Touhou is everywhere and everything. Novels and comics and games, hundreds and hundreds.
Did that ever happen with Mario? Can you remember the last time a Mario fan game was sold for money? Or Mega Man? What about Dragon Quest? Are you aware of any Dragon Quest doujin that, one: aren’t porn, and two: were long running and widely distributed?
I mean, you’re more likely to find a Touhou parody of this stuff than legitimate doujin games. There are still laws that will be enforced if you step on the wrong toes.
Which means that yes, I do believe Sega will start going after people if they continue to be disrespected like this. Sega and the community has an understanding, and it’s lead to a kind of ceasefire. If people take advantage of that for their own personal gain, then it threatens the whole system. Why risk bringing the fire down on everyone? Its ignorance at best, and selfish greed at worst.

Anime Adaptation: Codes Geass- Absolute Protection Territory (Akashic Mysteries/Arcforge) [PF1E] #TTRPG #Pathfinder #PF1E #CodeGeass
I recently watched the Code Geass recap movies and I felt inspired to pay homage to my favorite mech from the series. What follows is an interface slot veil, based on the Shinkirō’s protective barrier the “Absolute Protection Territory”. For anyone unfamiliar, the interface slot is the signature slot of the mech piloting and veilweaving class the Helmsman(affiliate link) . New Veil Absolute…

Hello!
Tumblr media
My name is Sparkwell Scrapbot and I want to tell you a little about myself! I am going to be posting my adventures as squire to Eunice Hardy in Azeroth and beyond.
When Sparkwell was a younger, ambitious gnome he was often sick and almost always left out of most things going on around him. While he had dreams of becoming a great hero of Mechagon, his health generally left him to watch as others worked and played and traveled the world. He had been engaged to a spitfire of a mage named Millicent but after realizing she would have to care more for him than have the freedom to travel on her own, she left him to fend for himself.
With no family left to help him along and realizing he would never be the gnome he saw himself to be without it, he volunteered to be one of the first gnomes to receive an upgrade by King Mechagon. Unfortunately, this didn't seem to help him much either. The first upgrade he received were his ears, which almost always had infections. Though his hearing improved, the original set of speakers would short circut, causing him to hear a load screeching sound or else suffer some kind of interference when he was around other mechanical devices (considering the state of Mechagon, he was immobile for some time while these were configured properly).
Sparkwell allowed himself to be upgraded almost entirely, his body, head and eyes are still his own, but his lower half, arms and ears have been replaced by mechanical upgrades. He still has his original heart and brain at least.
Seeing the state of the city where he was born and raised he tried to leave the Arcforged and join the Rustbolt Restistance but was discovered and subjected to extreme electroshock which caused him to lose consciousness and ultimately be thrown on one of the discarded scrap heaps. Following Operation: Mechagon, Sparkwell was discovered among a pile of other Mechagnomes and "reenergized" by the Gnomish Special Ops team under the lead of Andywyn and Rixipep. (Basically they electrocuted him again to see if there was any life left either in him or his parts) When he "came back to life" he was recalibrated and affixed with salvaged parts that could be upgraded at a later date.
Before departing Mechagon, he scrapped together his robe and staff and decided that he would stop relying on everyone else to save him, or give his life meaning, he would instead find a niche for himself.
Shortly after arriving in Stormwind he came under the contract of Eunice Hardy and in that found his first friend in his entire life. He is currently serving as her squire and traveling alongside her through her many adventures through the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor.

Sonic Smackdown is a fan Sonic fighting game that is heavily inspired by Marvel vs Capcom 3
ArcForged is currently working on an amazing 2D Sonic fighting game, Sonic Smackdown. This fan game appears to be heavily inspired by Marvel vs Capcom 3, and promises to be one of the best Sonic fighting games. And, since SEGA is friendly to fan games, this game will not receive any C&D letter.
As you may have guessed, Sonic Smackdown will be a free fighting game that will be available on the PC. While there isn’t any ETA on when it will come out, the team has released some incredible gameplay clips.
The game will feature a lot of Sonic friends and enemies. Moreover, Sonic Smackdown will sport lovely 2D visuals. Its gameplay and combo system will be also similar to the one found in Marvel vs Capcom 3.
For a fan game, Sonic Smackdown looks absolutely stunning. Therefore, we hope that the team will keep working on it until it’s complete and ready for release.
We’ve included a number of gameplay clips below so you can get a better idea of what this new free fighting game is all about.
Enjoy!
Hey Keef, when are you gonna try Sonic Smackdown out? (Pls? ; . 😉 pic.twitter.com/VF6EE7YHWd
